#NBCTchatter exists to promote accomplished teaching practices based on the research of the National Board of Professional Teaching standards and the experience of NBCTs. Our goal is to highlight our teacher leaders and give them a platform to talk about the practices, strategies, and plans that help prepare our students for life beyond our classrooms – becoming college and career ready.
Good evening ... I'm one of your hosts tonight ... Sylvia, Academic Coach / ENG tchr at Title 1 HS in Tampa, FL ... I met @pbriggs728 as he spoke at my school! Excited to share along with my co-hosts @CTechEd & @nsabrinagates#NBCTchatter
Hi Everyone ... I'm the CTechEd icon .. and I am also a host tonight - happy to join & @NSabrinaGates ... My purpose is to provide high quality professional learning for all educators. #NBCTchatter
A1 ... @pbriggs728 defines CRT as ... and he gave 10 considerations when assessing and altering your practice to provide access to ALL students. #NBCTchatter
A1 CRT is meeting students where they are ... as @LeeAraoz posted today "Don't accept the default, seek out an option that will BE better for [ALL] students." #NBCTchatter
I’m hearing some common aspects ... obviously we have to know our students (and their cultures) to plan for relevant teaching. Based not he list from @pbriggs728 ... which one do you already do? Which would you want to add? #NBCTchatter

I agree the two can go hand in hand ... in talking with a colleague today, how do you help students accept the opportunities and high expectations when they’ve had years of not having either placed on them? #NBCTchatter

A2-Love the reflection this question prompts. AVID days were my best examples of closing the opportunity gap. Currently promoting others to see the expectation gap. I think we need to close the gap between these two gaps! #NBCTChatter@CTechEd@HNBCT#NBCTStrong
Q2: To help meet the needs of so many diverse students I will be forever working on ways to incorporate and connect to their cultures and academic needs. I do believe I find success in having high expectations for ALL my students! #NBCTchatter
A2 ... @pbriggs728 explains that our treatment of students provides opportunities and defines expectations ... or it doesn't ... is it about our students? or is it about our perception of our students? #NBCTchatter
A2. I recruited heavily from underrepresented populations for anatomy, ap bio, and forensic sci. I tied the basic vocab of science back to their latin-rooted language.

A2 I never liked "achievement gap" b/c it put all the pressure on sts. I have a prof obligation to provide ALL students w/ opportunities and believe ALL can achieve ... Today, I communicated my expectations need to be higher ... in action and assignment. #NBCTchatter
That’s awesome ... recruitment is important ... @pbriggs728 and #springboardpl agreed that our AP classes / population should reflect our school’s population. (He also said that our ISS classes too often are highly populated by our African-American male sts #NBCTchatter

A2 Part 2- also makes me think about the role of implicit bias. How do we subconsciously lower expectations for some students through the instructional decisions we do and don't make for them. #NBCTChatter@CTechEd#NBCTStrong
A3. My classroom celebrated diversity. I had scientists, artists, actors, musicians, athletes all gathered to pursue biological learning. #NBCTchatter#NBCTstrong@CTechEd#andDave
Q3: There are ALWAYS things to celebrate! Finishing a book, demonstrating our thinking, finding a book we love, encouraging one another, student of the month, coming to school on time, and my most frequent and emphasized celebration: SHOWING KINDNESS! #nbctchatter

A3 .. @pbriggs728 reminded us that we tend to allow everyone to celebrate ("worship") some students (& possibly for the wrong reason) ... academics should equal or surpass athletics - both are important ... but what is more important at your site? in your classroom? #NBCTchatter

A3 Honesty? I need to celebrate MORE in my classroom. I need to display more student work ... highlight excellent diction, sentences, paragraphs, essays, writing! "Writer's Spotlight" #NBCTchatter
A3-I celebrate reflective teachers willing to look for patterns in their practice that influence instruction. I celebrate efforts being made to grow as educators based on what kids need. I celebrate when I see authentic relationships with students in the classroom. #NBCTChatter
Thank you to my co-hosts @SylviaEllison and @nsabrinagates ... we invite you join us each month ... and if you want to grow professional, join us at EdCampHillsborough #EdCampHCPS this Saturday, Spoto HS in Tampa, FL ... 8:00 AM EST #NBCTchatter
