Q1 What impact do you think Competency-Based Education (CBE) could have on students and education? https://t.co/LINWGOdxj5
-
-
A1. It can help bridge the gap between employer needs and academic outcomes in
-
A1: allows students to spend more time on "competencies" that are more difficult for them and less on ones that come easy.
-
A1 CBE just works! I feel like it takes the pressure off of Ts just teaching get through standards. Instead Ss progress...
-
A1 Competency-Based Education (CBE) should bring and in direct correlation to and growth.
-
A1: it is gong to help give them the skills necessary outside of the classroom in the working environment.
-
A1: teaches skills to an individual on their level while also maintaining the importance of learning all necessary skills.
-
A1. What students produce and can DO with stuff matters not sitting in class
-
Yes - removing seat time and allowing students to spend time on learning are key!
-
A1 ...throughout their learning journey, enjoying the process and learning much more than they would with drive-by instruction.
-
I think it's good for students to feel empowered by what they know and nourished in what they don't know. https://t.co/KEgSWqNZdw
-
-
Yes - removing seat time and allowing students to spend time on learning are key!
-
A1: If not handled well it could stifle creativity. Could also open up assignments for different ways to show Ss competency.๐
-
Measuring what you can DO with what you know, indeed a hallmark of !
-
Students can complete assessments that they can use in there workplace
-
Hard to do well. Enormous benefits for both children and teachers. Teacher becomes coach rather than "sage on stage."
-
it is a shift from standards to student learning in authentic ways. I agree - it works!
-
A1: I think can empower by not wasting time on things students already understand. They can use the time wiser.
-
A1: Focussing on competency based activities allows Ts to be inventive with classroom designs, lead to student creativity.
-
No more drive-by instruction! Can we coin this phrase https://t.co/Os5xNjckpH
-
-
A1 ...throughout their learning journey, enjoying the process and learning much more than they would with drive-by instruction.
-
A1 do we keep creativity at the forefront? https://t.co/3k1eAkm1Ay
-
-
A1: If not handled well it could stifle creativity. Could also open up assignments for different ways to show Ss competency.๐
-
A1: I think it's great for connecting skills needed in workforce, but how does it expand research?
-
A1: Teachers have the opportunity to engage more with students and their needs rather than just presenting to an audience.
-
A1: The only thing is it might be better for self-motivated students than students who need more traditional structure. Thoughts?
-
Great question - I do think there is room in for liberal education outcomes, just in context.
-
By encouraging variety of delivery systems for school work and making Ss partners in class/work design.๐
-
A1: could increase the rate at which students find specialty/calling in their - less undeclared majors in .
-
I think if personalized and supported, it can work for all! https://t.co/G4GaZNb4wo
-
-
A1: The only thing is it might be better for self-motivated students than students who need more traditional structure. Thoughts?
-
Can't be limited to parking kids in front of a screen for online practice. Human connection and coaching is critical.
-
Interesting...what do you think https://t.co/X96sveOBQ4
-
-
A1: could increase the rate at which students find specialty/calling in their - less undeclared majors in .
-
Yea. I guess everyone is in their own way so this could free everyone up to pursue more .
-
-
Finding a calling/work prospects too often takes a back seat to academics esp at uni and col level. https://t.co/WatvKNcfJw
-
-
A1: could increase the rate at which students find specialty/calling in their - less undeclared majors in .
-
Yes, Ss deciding how to show they know and apply knowledge.
-
Adult learning theory emphasizes that learners are motivated when the assessments are applicable
-
-
I like the idea of viewing teachers as coaches because it seems more active and related.
-
Traditional structure doesn't work for many, even if they think it does. Helping students take control and show!
-
That's true. For those people who have individual pursuits, they would be freer to master them. https://t.co/p4hfdiAXfN
-
-
A1: could increase the rate at which students find specialty/calling in their - less undeclared majors in .
-
Q2 is coming soon. I am already inspired by all the great responses! Join us
-
I'd be interested in learning more. It definitely didn't work for me! But I saw several peers excelling. https://t.co/3CBVt4pR84
-
-
Traditional structure doesn't work for many, even if they think it does. Helping students take control and show!
-
-
Need triangle of content, student & teacher.....all equal.
-
-
A1 CBE could lead to a "recipe card" approach to education that prevents an overall understanding of the topic.
-
A2: Asking "too many" questions has been seen as rebellious. Whether Ss questioning Ts or Ts questioning admin.
-
-
-
TED_ED: Q1 What impact do you think Competency-Based Education (CBE) could have on students and education? โฆ
-
-
-
-
A2. Becoming studentcentered, not being the content deliver-er, allowing student choices...
-
A2. Dis-aggregating a faculty model, focusing on curating and coaching is one rebel effort!
-
A2: by letting Ss take control of their learning. By having them pick the topics they want to learn and be the teachers.
-
A2. Empowering not engaging Ss
-
A2: Teachers fighting for more resources for use in the classroom, redesigning course delivery can be viewed as rebellious.
-
A great reminder that rebel efforts can be small to start!
-
A2: I think having students being outside expertise and teach the class could be rebellious but fun.
-
A2. What about not using A-F grades? That's
-
A2: Students have a lot of knowledge from things they learn outside of school. They could bring their skills into the classroom.
-
A2: our college started offering study abroad/service opportunities to assist w/H2O, electric, and other Civil Engr projects
-
Indeed! https://t.co/Yvths89XhV
-
-
it is a shift from standards to student learning in authentic ways. I agree - it works!
-
questions are always good as long as you are productive and respectful!๐
-
Student choice is part of many models It allows students to move through curriculum in ways that meet their needs.
-
A2: What about focusing on and learning skills that can be good coping mechanisms for stress like ?
-
What if we assessed ? I would not want a pilot who could fly with a "C" average! https://t.co/hOD9OZUfps
-
-
A2. What about not using A-F grades? That's
-
As soon as grad schools and employers stop evaluating applicants based on grades https://t.co/GoVmOxuyt1
-
-
A2. What about not using A-F grades? That's
-
I'm good with grades, A-F or other forms. They can be used by many Ss as a point from which improvement can be plotted.
-
A2 Joining the movement and finding creative ways to integrate CS with units of inquiry. Learning w/ Ss priceless!
-
I LOVE this - rebellious AND making a real difference.
-
A2. Being a rebel is Citizen Science and students collect data for real scientists!
-
Rather than A-F grades, CBE allows students to obtain competence or mastery of content
-
I notice you state "should" is a well known method in 'vocational training" used in the UK & Australia
-
Sorry I'm late. Rebel by throwing out the trad curriculum and co-constructing one that meets the needs of ss. It works a treat!
-
A2 Daring to try something new and innovative w/ Ss and sharing w/ colleagues, even if not "approved". Ask for forgiveness later
-
would love to see any examples you can share!
-
-
it's a start though! Rather than blindly accepting, it takes courage to shake things up to enhance S learning.
-
We do this towards the end of school year. Ss choose something they want to teach their peers https://t.co/D0INRl8lS9
-
-
A2: I think having students being outside expertise and teach the class could be rebellious but fun.
-
Yes, I know, its a systemic problem, but employers say our Ss don't have the skills, so shouldn't we assess skills?
-
That's so cool! Because everyone becomes a teacher of something later in life and those skills are integral.
-
A2 and include Ts taking learning outside the classroom
-
easier to get forgiveness than ask for permission every time!
-
Yes! I do this. I use a 1.2.3 system that's all about personal growth. It's pretty awesome. https://t.co/UVPNcudkYm
-
-
A2. What about not using A-F grades? That's
-
A2: Kids' learning how to teach is important bc it's part of the learning cycle. You haven't learned till you've taught.
-
Yep! I was looking into the magnets 4 Ss to use as needed throughout the day 4 brain breaks/de-stress etc https://t.co/eNYSD0QHEw
-
-
A2: What about focusing on and learning skills that can be good coping mechanisms for stress like ?
-
A2. Giving up cookie cutter learning and science labs where the answer is already known. https://t.co/ZSg00HOw3c
-
-
A2. Being a rebel is Citizen Science and students collect data for real scientists!
-
if competencies are transparent and there is evidence a student can do what we say, employers will be ready!
-
of course! DM me and I can email you :-)
-
A2 moving elements of learning outside the classroom & have a disregard for a structured timetable
-
-
A2 we moved most of our jnr programme to formative assessment to allow my dept flexibility to adapt as required.
-
Awesome! Involving students in formative assessment of skills and content, but they help, right?
-
I love because it's fun & collaborative & anyone can do it and you don't have to be great to reap benefits.
-
Q3 What resources would you use to design a competency-based innovative experience for students? https://t.co/JE2uGC99Dg
-
-
-
Yes! In "real" life learning happens everywhere and without time constraints!
-
structurally we need to work toward reducing the resistance of some Ts to teaching outside of school.
-
As a team member of , I'm thrilled to join this on . Loving the insights so far!
-
-
Yep! Self and peer reflection strongly encouraged. I need to do better with consistency though
-
the students and research informed practice
-
Let's do it! Lol. https://t.co/T6ZrG0NKwD
-
-
No more drive-by instruction! Can we coin this phrase https://t.co/Os5xNjckpH
-
-
A1 ...throughout their learning journey, enjoying the process and learning much more than they would with drive-by instruction.
-
A3. would be truly adaptive, affordable, and constantly updated and curated by faculty SMEs and students.
-
A3: a lot of google apps/extensions are great for this and often free. Give Ts/Ss competency and they can be great!๐
-
A3 access the community. Our school is by the beach so we have a lot of place based learning. Authentic and engaging
-
A3: I would place a lot of creative tools in the room (yarn, musical instruments, painting tools) & see which they gravitate to.
-
You got it...helping them to see where they are, what the standard is, and providing support to excell
-
-
Love the use of the two As, adaptive and affordable. This helps entrench UDL practices, benefit all. https://t.co/KD2Muep7z7
-
-
A3. would be truly adaptive, affordable, and constantly updated and curated by faculty SMEs and students.
-
A3 our national curriculum is underpinned by key competencies. Always in mind but never formally assessed.
-
Such an important idea - we sometimes forget to do this in online programs, but no excuses!
-
A3: I use and other websites. I teach personal finance so it's very real examples everyday. Joys of banking.
-
A3 Wouldn't it be awesome if Ss could be a part of this convo abt resources too? Sure they have nuggets of goodness to contribute
-
A3 for older Ss the great outdoors, public transport, digital mapping
-
Thanks for sharing - what a great resource for
-
A3: building cross-curricular projects that extend beyond classroom walls. Inspire creativity & ingenuity in Ss
-
A3 Key resource for me is having an aesthetically stimulating, comfortable, and warm environment to explore in. Take lots of $$
-
student choice should definitely be a hallmark of at any level. Your focus on is much appreciated!
-
theses are also good for spec Ed Ss to teach life skills/ how to navigate their world!๐
-
A3 Key resource for me is having an aesthetically stimulating, comfortable, and warm environment to explore in.
-
TED_ED: Q3 What resources would you use to design a competency-based innovative experience for students? โฆ

I agree-we do not work in silos by content areas in the real world, but we keep doing it in https://t.co/EjE0TgJ5HC
-
-
A3: building cross-curricular projects that extend beyond classroom walls. Inspire creativity & ingenuity in Ss
-
A3 agree donโt pigeon hole subjects - integrate them to provide for a โreal lifeโ experience
-
This is true for online and brick/mortar environments!
-
yes! Integration enhances authenticity of learning. Life isn't always neatly boxed into subjects.
-
Prblm is many Ts love THEIR content & not how it connects What can we do to improve this? https://t.co/KKodarGnnB
-
-
A3 agree donโt pigeon hole subjects - integrate them to provide for a โreal lifeโ experience
-
A3 using and leveraging free content is a way to help keep costs down and ensure affordability in
-
another challenges is the idea that Ss should just "know" content independent of application.
-
Agree and with a bit of imagination these fit just about any subject inc etc.
-
Final Question is coming up!
-
Thanks :) I just feel like it's a growing trend that needs nurturing. https://t.co/DVPYdUDkwn
-
-
student choice should definitely be a hallmark of at any level. Your focus on is much appreciated!
-
You hit at the crux of the problem.
-
start at the pre-service level.Ts need to question underlying assumptions re teaching & learning
-
Q4 What opportunities do you want to pursue as a rebel who has the power to improve student outcomes? https://t.co/oImjLuCcgj
-
Environment is really important! The space sets the tone the second kids come in to learn. https://t.co/YdYOHhtmM6
-
-
A3 Key resource for me is having an aesthetically stimulating, comfortable, and warm environment to explore in.
-
-
A3 engage in projects that allow opportunities to cross over e.g. organise a health promotion event
-
A4 recruit other rebels :) Have covos like this! Ask questions. Take risks. Be informed. Have research to back actions.
-
A3: I'm planning to Perdue a couple of volunteer opportunities that will add to my ability to question status quo.
-
Let's keep the convo going and keep asking questions; learning from each other https://t.co/3lgHhmuoFB

meant pursue, God I passionately dislike auto correct!๐
-
A4: I want to use my / mission to inspire students to focus on basic ways of creating.
-
A4: collaboration and partnerships with SMEs and employers
-
A4 work with the DOE, accrediting bodies, to advocate for change. Focus on student learning vs credithour #highered#
-
A4: seeking out others in Ed field with different/more experience than me.๐
-
-
A4: I learn a lot from people promoting movements because they're disrupting a lot of systems at once.
-
A4 Absolutely rebels take risks but they need to be informed ones
-
A3. Keep rebel undergrads who usually leave preservice ed because they don't fit in, we need them to keep asking WHY?
-
A4: seeking out/ being a mentor to others.๐
-
we have much to learn from each other!
-
absolutely! Just be/stay open as a person is the first step!๐
-
How can we make a positive impact in ? Being a rebel who takes informed risks! https://t.co/0Cw9AcJVxV
-
-
A4 Absolutely rebels take risks but they need to be informed ones

A4 cross country collaboration; exchange & research programs
-
A4 Being a rebel goes hand-in-hand with being an advocate. I'm inspired by all the renegades and advocates I met today
-
Creating global citizens - it is our duty as in
-
To what competencies are you referring to here?
-
It can be a lonely endeavour! Thanks for sparking the convo.
