Good morning and welcome to the first #sunchat of 2018! If you are like me, it's time to dig yourself out and get back to chatting! Please, take a few moments to introduce yourself.
Tim - looks like so much great stuff going on with your comics in class! Maybe you might want to lead a #sunchat discussion for us one day? @historycomics
Let’s start 2018 with a #focus on student friendly feedback! Come join the conversation on @TVO’s #TeachOntario in our newest Book Club “The Feedback Friendly Classroom!” Register Now! Starts Jan. 9th. https://t.co/77urkXnUA3
I'm planning on focusing on grammar in 2018... Tired of students not being able to construct a quality sentence. Sometimes, you need to start at the beginning, again. #sunchat
On a personal level, my goal is to work on publishing more in the EDU world (blog posts, journals, confs). Backing up my tendency to want to be a disruptor with solid research and scholarly arguments....besides, about time to come up with a dissertation topic. #sunchat
My goal is to always be on the lookout for innovative ways of teaching, not accepting complacency and status quo. As well, I have set a goal of reading 20 educational books this year.
#sunchat
I took a photo of each student holding a little whiteboard with their #oneword2018 on it. Will hang them in the hallway as a constant reminder. #sunchat
I am focusing on 'concreteness fading' in my classroom...how most effectively use concrete to abstract examples in the classroom to assist with transfer of knowledge. I wrote about it here:
https://t.co/u0NdoeN4dA#sunchat
Morning, #sunchat. I'm Brian. I teach middle-school students English in Colorado. Turns out these thoughts from a minutes-ago chat summarize some of my 2018 goals.
A2 Things I want to learn more about: Assessment alternatives that rely less on grades. Effective portfolio practices. Practical cognitive science. Heutagogy. Where to find sweet snow for skiing when it's warm & dry out west. #hacklearning
Hello, #sunchat folks! 31-year veteran middle school math teacher here, or as I like to put it, 1.5 years from retirement. Still kicking, and always trying to improve my instruction. I have a new set of kids coming in tomorrow, and I'm eager to see what this semester brings!
I am focusing on interacting with schools/authors around the world - it’s been amazing seeing how comics and pop culture are universal language. How are superheroes viewed in other cultures? We are also planning a comic con for our high school - so lots on the horizon. #sunchat
Love this! It's time we not only search for ways to encourage our students to be engaged in learning, but how to encourage our teachers to stay engaged with teaching. #sunchat

#OneWord2018 is based off the book, and encourages an introspective process to help you identify a single word that will help characterize your goals, focus, direction for the coming year. The reflection involved is my favorite part! #sunchat

@Studentschamp
Joe, how did you relay to the teachers that you want them to do this? Were they receptive? You obviously are offering them a risk-free zone. What was the response? #sunchat
would love to hear some of the strategies you are using. My nephew has a learning disability and is in kindergarten. Any support I can give him...#sunchat
“Still kicking”. Jim is too modest - he just created an awesome graphic novel integrating a diverse superhero team using math to solve problems! He’s amazing! He saw a need in his class and just did it. Inspiring! Check out @SolutionSquad#sunchat

The kids and I developed our #oneword2018 - QR codes lead u to their @flipgrid where they explain why they chose that word;) I also want to continue to learn from others and my amazing PLN daily- take risks and fail enthusiastically #sunchathttps://t.co/U2MfuzmyDu
Sounds great, Tim! We've worked with a local K-8 magnet schools for a few years now on their annual comic con. Would love to hear how yours goes. Also, we've participated in several Skype sessions with classes to discuss #StarWars topics and would be glad to connect. #sunchat
Right now I am new to the school, 6 weeks! I am building trust by being in classrooms, listening to concerns and delivering on requests. I am working slowly with a few and response has been great! Will build capacity as we continue build trust! #sunchat
One thing I am going to do this semester is blog more about my experience in teaching. I have a lot of tricks up my sleeve from my career and I want to share them with younger teachers. Here's one of my favorite opening activities: https://t.co/csQnF5RWNg#sunchat
My goal as a working educator is to find ways to value teacher agency within systems that may not always value it. When everyone wants what they feel is best for students, making sure all stakeholders are being heard. #sunchat
@susankotch What I am looking at first with several teachers are grading practiced and making sure students are graded on knowledge and not procedure. #sunchat
I love how kinders love to hear books read to them. Reminds us all about the joys of hearing the story and getting absorbed in it, sometimes lost in older kids when we make them close read everything, put stickies in it and write and dissect it. #sunchat
The secret is to find creative ways to do your job no matter what curriculum is forced on you. Make your classroom your own. Comply with directions, but do your thing as much as you can! #sunchat
My goals for this year:
Help busy students, educators & parents.
Be a constant learner
Update my web pages eliminating old sites & those that do not work.
(I need your help) My Goals page https://t.co/79KpjjWI5X Have students set their learning goals for 2018 #sunchat
I have story time in my HS class. I read stories aloud often. Students also read aloud. We also listen to War of the Worlds radio broadcast... don’t forget how all ages love story time and comic books! #sunchat

✨ #SunChat My goals this year involve sharing more, learning more, and trying more new things in my classroom! I need to find a unique way to organize what I’m sharing!✨ This is something I recently shared.. https://t.co/wyiNz6T8SR
Having just unrolled our @Scholastic guided reading program - older kids LOVE being read to, too! I had always heard that, but until I saw it...WOW. #sunchat

I didn't actually mean the physical space, but yes, I agree. I meant to put your personal brand on your instruction even if you have to use a scripted or other forced curriculum. Use a font that is distinctly yours so that kids know that the work had YOUR hands on it. #sunchat
I am using the approach of how Ts would feel if they were late turning something into me and I would not accept it. Life happens, we need to find out why it was late or not complete and what we can do to help students meet their goals. #sunchat
Good morning #fitnessedu tribe! I hope you’ve had a wonderful week! Not sure about you, but I’m getting pumped up for Week 2 of 2018’s chat! Join in tonight at 7pm EST! Can’t wait to see you there! #fitleaders#sunchat#ohedchat
Yes, I love the look in their eyes when they are listening to stories. I am hoping the passion for independent reading is spread like wildfire. Lots of sight words, modeling, audio books, DEAR time, & book studies with my kinders😇 #sunchat
Amen!!! I have trouble w/people wanting to just get by. So glad a coworker is retiring. Taught the same way his whole career-book only. Any have suggestions on preventing this? #sunchat
I like this almost completely. Def key to get to root of problem, and nipping in bud. But what job accepts habitual lateness? Is there something to be said for setting expectations and following through? #sunchat
I had job security before I started bucking the system. I forced my administrators to show me where I was wrong in designing my instruction. Many of our protections were legislated out in 2012. But now there's a teacher shortage! #sunchat
Please write a blog or give some PD to principals on that!!! I really don’t understand why people don’t think of that first. 1st law of leadership to me #sunchat
I have a hard time turning lesson plans in in a timely fashion. I plan ... walk into my class and the majority of the time the kids are truly engaged ... but the act of turning in that file is tough. What is more important ... the piece of paper or the results? #sunchat
Expectations absolutely must be set and follow through is key. But proving to a student that you care will eliminate late work because they will not want to let you down. #sunchat
Don't tell anyone, but I haven't used a textbook in five years. I am lucky enough to teach a course (math problem solving) that I was allowed to design from the ground up. I created every scrap of material that I use in my semester course. It's the ultimate freedom! #sunchat
@carlameyrink I am so glad I decided you are my virtual idol already. I would so be jealous. If no one can come, can I plan on coming to see you next winter? I have a long break. I can be there as soon as school is out :) #sunchat
Results are important to me. The people in the building knowing I care is important to me. From Ts to Ss to maintenance and cafeteria personnel, they all MUST know I care and I am there to support them. #sunchat
I was transferred against my will to a new school after 18.5 years but to serve more students. It's not fun. I miss my old school, but kids are kids. #sunchat
I agree, again, almost all the way. My main priority with my students is communicating that message, one of caring. And 1-2 late things is no big deal. But the constant- that I can’t abide. #sunchat
Whatever your goals, the fact that each of you are spending a part of your weekend connecting and discussing what is best for our profession is profoundly inspiring and hope-encouraging. #sunchat
I also want to continue #blendedlearning and giving kids #voice and #choice in learning ❤️ they need to be driving their education! Also making sure Kids are LOVING school and having fun and I need to create innovative ways to hook them to that lesson! #sunchat
I was doing training in IN around that time. It was a rough time for your state. So glad I still have security. Low pay is causing our shortage. #sunchat

Most definitely. With no step increases in Indiana, you start at $34K a year and could end a 30-year career at the same level. Same here! Who wants to make that amount with a mortgage and two kids? #sunchat
#ImPrettySureThat Michael Wolff sat in WH corridors and collected gossip from Obama time appointees and low key staff members apart from brief meetings with Bannon etc., & presented it as facts. He’s untruthful.
#SundayMorning Tapper Stephen Miller #sunchat
Black History Month is just a few weeks away. Here are some great comic resources that should be in your classroom and library all year. #sunchathttps://t.co/Jwa2wGqL0Q
Reading aloud is great for any age. We’ve even used picture books to great affect. Love using old radio broadcasts, too, like Command Performance. War of the Worlds is awesome! We have that Princeton telescope at @RoperMountain. Could connect with you guys on that too. #sunchat
I so get everyone’s thoughts on lesson planning formally. Although I haven’t done it much this year, I have to say it makes a difference. It is something about thinking through an entire unit on paper. I think I am better when I do it. #sunchat

I do everything with lesson planning except write out the actual formal lesson. All the thought, all the research, all the resource prep, just not the formal plan. #sunchat

My #oneword2018 after a very turbulent year. I have to remember that no matter how crazy things get, I'll handle it better if I take time to reflect. #sunchathttps://t.co/KGRIAYZn3Y
My #oneword is “strengthen”. Devoting 2018 to strengthening my mind by reading more professional books, strengthening my coaching skills, and strengthening relationships with colleagues and family. #sunchat
Never said I didn't plan ... formal act of submitting my plans to Admin is something I struggle doing. My activities are well thought out and standards based. However, the act of copying and pasting that information into their form for whatever reason seems impossible. #sunchat

@thnorfar, @susankotch, @Studentschamp
I hear you. I found out after the fact that some of my colleagues in other buildings knew before I did. It's now been two years and I'm just over it recently. #sunchat
I do not eat in the lounge with other teachers. I am selective of whom I befriend. One thing I learned long ago is that you don't want to be friends with everyone. There are good apples and bad in every building. Stay out of that pit if you can. #sunchat
My goal is to finish the year as a strong literacy coach. I learned so much this first semester and anxious to learn more! I have gotten over my fear of presenting and would like to eventually present PD at a conference (still unsure of what the topic would be)! #sunchat
The feeling of betrayal stays with you a while. In the end, it's a learning process about trust and relationships, and makes you realize your own values. Props to you for coming out on top. I'm connecting to your experience for sure. #sunchat

Gotcha. I caught that you said you plan. I thought you didn’t write it down at all. Sorry, they make you submit a particular form. They should take however you wrote it. #sunchat

Yes! I always try to explain to the students the reason I need to see some things written out. I like to be transparent with them. Once I know they get it, then it's not longer a requirement. #sunchat

I also use the War of the Worlds broadcast! We check the math. According to the broadcast, Mars is 40 million miles away while in "opposition." The Martians arrive in 10 minutes. How fast did they have to travel? #sunchat
I was betrayed, shocked, hurt, depressed and almost left teaching. But it was my Tweeps, students, and comics, that saved me and made me fall in love with teaching again! I feel so invigorated! https://t.co/yCbrZO76fH#sunchat

I believe in a collaborative staff, and would be more than willing to work with anyone. And I’m blessed to have a tribe of go-tos. And I wouldn’t want to be nasty to anyone. But I’m there to serve my kids, not be best friends with everyone. #sunchat

In my 16 years of teaching ... I can count on one hand how many outside of school activities I have done with colleagues. Not something I do ... I have "working" friendships ... I am just a recluse when it comes to life outside of school. #sunchat

As a X-men and marvel fan, I totally appreciate this! At the secondary level, you can teach so much about themes and conflict with comics, graphic novels, etc. and you know the Ss would be interested! #sunchat
This is great, we just addressed this at our campus our 1st day back. We had a math PD and concrete to abstract was a hot topic of discussion. #sunchat
It was different for me at my old school. When I arrived, I was the "kid" and they raised me in a manner of speaking. Now that everyone but me from that time is retired, we gather once a month to have dinner. It's not the same now. #sunchat
So sorry about being blindsided. I have found out you always find out about who people really are. I just prefer I find out from what they do to other people :(. #sunchat
✨ #SunChat Oh, I also made a bucket list for the first time ever (see below)! Using a planner all year is on the list! 😂 I purchased one over the weekend, ready to go!✨ https://t.co/54ot2iNBCH
What an amazing way to integrate technology. I want to share your tweet with our teacher of the year, @MissDLR127 , who did a #oneword activity with her class this past week! #sunchat
Make 2018 the year of bucking the system and bring your personal passion into the classroom - you’ll never regret it! Passion is contagious! #sunchathttps://t.co/E78rYmmiAu
What are your personal plans for action in 2018 to help bring us from dystopia to more of a thriving civilization?
I'm super curious and would love to hear what you're doing or considering, what you're struggling with, and what support, if any, you need.
