A1 1st I think they give kids a place to find a passion. And then share that passion
Good evening . Michelle TG, instructional coach in NW Iowa watching the Vikes & my Tweetdeck this evening.
A1: Extra curricular activities are another venue to help engage Ss, build collaboration, teamwork, & leadership skills.
A1: somewhat sadly but for some extra-curriculars are a reason for students to come to school
A1:it is an extension of the classroom, learning skills like teamwork, for some Ss it is what makes them come to school and perform
A1: sometimes extra- curricular activities are the only things keeping a kid in school.
A1: Provide opportunities for kids to participate in activities they are interested in beyond academics.
A1. They serve as an opportujhity for the students to exend their learning beyond the school day,
Always glad to find ! It makes my computer happy! :)
A1: opportunities for Ts & Ss to interact and explore passions and interests.
A1: They give the school day an additional purpose. They improve attendance, graduation rates, connectivity, and pride.
A1: Helps foster the whole child, outlet for those who struggle with academics
A1: a way for Ss to participate in a different way. Teaches them teamwork, goal setting, and hard work
A1: Stem clubs like LEGO League provide authentic learning experiences Sports promote a healthy lifestyle and teamwork skills!
A1: So many-they foster relationships while building character, social skills, & help Ss uncover their strengths & know themselves
A1 My speech kids learn how to "win" and "Lose" gracefully. Empathy is a must in our little family
A1. To give students a chance to try something new and different.
A1: Extra-curriculars allow students to become part of something bigger than themselves. A place to connect w/ others.
A1: Kids who are connected to appropriate adults/activities are less likely to be "at-risk." If we care about kids, connect them
A1: School activities are often where relationships are built and students are challenged to stretch.
Gives Ss the opp. to thrive in multiple areas. Some are better at arts, some sports, some dev. leader skills in other arenas.
A1: Self-discipline, teamwork, responsibility, growth mindset, value of hard work all learned from extracurr. activities
A1 extras serve an abundance of purposes not limited to prob solving/communication/Comm building/time management/contribution
A1) To build community both inside the activity and in the school as a whole.
That also helps with building the student/teacher relationship outside of the classroom!
A1 E/CC activities provide Ss with engagement in teamwk, partnerships, relationship building, ownership of a process toward a goal
A1. To foster leadership skills outside of the regular classroom.
A1 gives opportunities for students to explore and find their passions and a way for students to gain a sense of belonging
A1: The old coach in me could go on for far more than 140 characters.
Instead I'll just say "character"
Revealing, building, etc.
A1: They provide diverse opportunities to ss to find their passion, become leaders and collaborate. https://t.co/umF8Xlgykx
Q1: What purposes do extra curricular activities serve in the K-12 setting in your opinion?
And what do we need to do to make sure this isn’t happening! What makes the ECs so much more appealing? https://t.co/fTIx4E2WDp
A1: somewhat sadly but for some extra-curriculars are a reason for students to come to school
A1) developing the "whole child". So many skills learned and enhanced outside of the classroom and school setting
Yes, There are many students that I can think of that extra-curricular activities motivated them to keep going.
A1.2: They allow Ts to be more accessible- sharing passions. Reinforces to Ss that it’s cool to be passionate about something.
A1: They provide ways for the community to be connected to the schools.
A1. Several purposes. Organization, teamwork, handwork, dedication, also life lessons such as winning, losing, & being cut.
A1 It also serves to build responsibility, confidence, and leadership.
A1 Students participate in team activities where they learn life lessons and practice skills learned in the classroom
A1) To allow those Ss to have success, whether it on the stage, on the field, or somewhere else, all outside the classroom.
yes! Developing leadership skills. So important.
A1: Students get to further develop their interests and talents with guidance from caring adults.
Coming in a little late but A1) Extra curr. are crucial for Ss. Engagement, exploration, friendships..That list goes on-and-on
Yep! Like that language — thrive at their own passion. https://t.co/9tipj1M5qm
Gives Ss the opp. to thrive in multiple areas. Some are better at arts, some sports, some dev. leader skills in other arenas.
Right- and allows Ss to focus and develop those specific skills/talents!
A1: To help Ss try new things & feel successful at school outside of the traditional classroom.
A1. the co-curricular component links the activity back to the school day.
A1 ECs are an extension of the classroom. Often the most motivating/engaging aspect of a Ss day. Unique opp. 4 each to see success
That's true! Local companies sponsor lego league teams, sports encourage parents to come watch their kids play!
A1 (continued): They also connect the school with the community. That is what gives people a sense of pride to their town.
Q2 is coming up in one minute!
A1: also a way to see teachers in a different way and build relationships that can be brought into the classroom too
A1: I guess the ? should be, why do they need to be "extra" curriculars? Why can't they just be integrated in the normal day?
A1. they serve to broaden the student's perspective.
Love this idea of "developing the 'whole child'"! I think that is so important, and something we miss! https://t.co/rWtA24zzjS
A1) developing the "whole child". So many skills learned and enhanced outside of the classroom and school setting
Jumping in while watching the game. Stacey Noble ICWest. A1: They foster community and offer connection opportunities
Q2: What are the pros and cons of extra curriculars?
Nailed it!
https://t.co/i0dLz7cMUL
A1) developing the "whole child". So many skills learned and enhanced outside of the classroom and school setting
A1: extra curricular activities are the other half of education, many life lessons & great motivation for kids with school work
absolutely. Sense of belonging so critical for our students.
Welcome, Stacey! We are happy to have you with us this evening.
So important for the students and adults involved. Gives community renewed energy and pride as well! https://t.co/TTKq1bbZ1K
A1 (continued): They also connect the school with the community. That is what gives people a sense of pride to their town.
A2 I think most pros were listed in the first question. Cons: Money can be an issue in some EC.
A1 sets up a sense of community and improves accountability
A2: A pro is that they help students develop so many life skills. A con is when they become a higher priority than school.
A2. Pros: Develops leaders, furthers student knowledge, expands circle of friends, challenges them.
A2: Provide Ss opportunities such as ldrship, collaboration, sportsmanship. However, not all Ss may be able to participate.
Feeing success outside of the classroom &/or feeling success that they might not feel in the classroom. https://t.co/yx24f0bOPg
A1) To allow those Ss to have success, whether it on the stage, on the field, or somewhere else, all outside the classroom.
As our schools began whole grade sharing, the FB team helped to bring us all together. Amazing how it happened!
A2: There are no cons. The pros are that students connect with peers around something they are passionate about. Authenticity!
A2: Pros: Extended learning and building teamwork skills Cons: Money and time can differ among schools, parents, and volunteers.
A2.Cons: At the middle level we have a limited number of ECs.
This is such a great point!! https://t.co/WC9NTgLg4E
A1: I guess the ? should be, why do they need to be "extra" curriculars? Why can't they just be integrated in the normal day?
Let's kids pursue their genius if given choice, sometimes to get xtra help w/ a topic, keep kids in school
A2: Pro: They give all Ss more opportunities. Con: The cost
A2: One pro I didn't mention is the extension of friend circle. Kids become friends w/ some they may not have met otherwise
A2:Pros- Allows Ss to develop pride in themselves and community, gives some Ss a higher education opportunity
That's great that it became a positive for the community. https://t.co/IBADqd67OZ
As our schools began whole grade sharing, the FB team helped to bring us all together. Amazing how it happened!
A2 :some of life's lessons are learned during the extracurricular. Lessons that can't be taught in a classroom
A2 Con: Distance from school for some if they don't have a car or a way to and from activity.
A2) Pros are a given but Cons are definitely the stress it can put on Ss from all areas of their world
A2: Cost and unequal distribution of resources are the cons
A2 abundant opportunities for student leadership, lifelong lessons, work ethic (-)More kids aren't involved in multiple activities
A2: Con--time out of classes and late nights/early mornings. Balance is lost.
Q2: The only possible con would be that not all students find an activity. Challenge should be to connect all students somehow.
There are increasing # of classrooms connecting to the community by sharing, too. This is great to see. https://t.co/UJBEHG7nkW
A1 (continued): They also connect the school with the community. That is what gives people a sense of pride to their town.
A2. Learning from moments. My heart set on basketball, cut from 7th gr team sparked true talent of music exploration
A2: Con - Extra costs not all can afford. Pro - Allows Ss to explore passions outside school day.
A2: Pros: Connections between other Ss and coaches, builds "the whole child". Cons: not everyone can always participate
A2: Pros-diff. kinds of learning, based on interest, go at Ss pace, tch life skills to help Ss be c/c ready.
A2. pros: so many life lessons are learned during this time.
Yes, I think ?s of equity can come into play here.
A2: Time and money continue to be challenges. Do kids have enough time to do all they want to? Will the program be funded?
A2 Con--Students who try to do everything and then aren't able to give their best and anything
A2: Some Ss that would benefit the most don't have access because of transportation and time of day.
So true, esp if schools don't run activity buses. So true in rural schools, especially
A2: In many instances EC can help build upon academic curriculum.
A2:2 Pro: Connections outside friend groups. Comfort zones challenged and expanded.
A2: Cons-Limited sports/coaches, limited # of spots on certain teams, extra costs for families for supplies and traveling
A2. (b) Time and money concerns are always there. Tough to balance one or the other or both in some cases.
A2: Pro- connections, skill building, time mgmt, relationships, etc. Con- $, accessibility challenges- not a reason to not offer.
A2 too many pros to list. Biggest con is if Ss are not supported at home and/or school w/ relationships/situations/negativity
A2: Time management is a pro and a con. A child can learn time management, or neglect school work for the extra-curricular
Absolutely. Those kids from outlying towns sometimes get the short stick when buses are cut for budgetary reasons
Joining late, Allison, SPED from Audubon
A2 - Pro: As mentioned by Melinda Tremmel, relationships & skills can B brought into classroom. Con: so many opp., so little time.
A2: pros-leader/teamwork/commitment cons-time consuming/long road trips/ spread thin w/ all sports https://t.co/DjUMdQm3Bl
Q2: What are the pros and cons of extra curriculars?
A2. Pros- Ss leadership, extending learning beyond school day. Cons- Money, not all schools can offer wide variety of EC Act.
A2 pros leadership, collaboration, building community, perseverance. Cons money and lack of opportunity for all students
A2 Pros-find your passion, build lifelong skills, team building, overcoming adversity, strong work ethic Cons-time commitment
A2) so many pros!! However Ss who have challenges participating(cost, family sppt) may feel further left behind?
Great point, Deb! Stepping outside of their normal to build relationships! https://t.co/ttAUppi1o7
A2: One pro I didn't mention is the extension of friend circle. Kids become friends w/ some they may not have met otherwise
A2: Pro - builds community, leadership, and other positive traits Con - wrong emphasis, egos get in the way
Hi guys! Hailee Halverson, first year, high school English teacher from Washington, Iowa!
I definitely agree. Many Ss are so busy with EC that they don't do homework or struggle because they are tired
A2: Pros: many opp. to extend learning beyond classroom... leadership & build comm pride. Cons: $ and limited at smaller schools.
So many pros mention community building — love this! https://t.co/YnUccNbxCg
A2:Pros- Allows Ss to develop pride in themselves and community, gives some Ss a higher education opportunity
Q3 is right around the corner.
It happens a lot in speech. I get kids from all different circles
For boys esp. not making a team can be very demoralizing AND limiting, esp MS when boys mature at different rates
A2: Frequently activities are the most authentic experiences that students have in school.
Q3: Should a student in MS/HS be allowed to participate in extra curriculars if they are failing or fail a class?
Great point…… What are some schools doing to prevent this con from happening? https://t.co/OjIdjjHbRS
Q2: The only possible con would be that not all students find an activity. Challenge should be to connect all students somehow.
A2: Pro - community rallying point Con - some see as more important than an education
The pros outweigh the cons, don't you think :) https://t.co/LoVYrMP5oF
A2 Pros-find your passion, build lifelong skills, team building, overcoming adversity, strong work ethic Cons-time commitment
A2: Pros: Ss discover themselves socially Cons: usually fall outside school day and can be difficult for some to participate in
Hopping in late after watch Guy's Grocery Games w/ my daughter. Nick from &
A1: Cons: missing class for having to leave early (a lot), students can spread themselves too thin
A2: Extra Curriculars are extra opportunities for students to connect with school and for the school to provide for their needs.
So true! RT : A2: Pro - community rallying point Con - some see as more important than an education
& a huge shout out to Iowa's Principal of the Year 16. I met Autumn in D.C. this past week. She's a rock star.
My innovation school (Gr 4/5) extends day 1 hr. Pro: Kids choose activities. Con: some classes too full work uninspiring
A3 I go back and forth on this. If kids can't keep up in class, maybe adding to their plate isn't a good thing. (1/2)
Joining in progress from Massachusetts. Brian, HS principal.
One answer is to listen to student voice. Make sure activities reflect student interest.
A3: IMO it depends on the mission/vision of the school. If we're focused on developing the whole child, no. Let Ss participate
A3: No! There is a reason we call them student athletes...you are a student first. IA should increase frequency of check IMO
A3 Taking away extra-curriculars for grades is about as logical as taking away a recess for bad behavior in class
On the other hand, an extra curricular might be keeping a kid in school. At risk kids need something positive in their life
A3: School comes first. STUDENT athlete. Our school's Success Center takes precedence over practices
It most definitely has been opened, let's do this.
Pro: culture, health, team work, identity, learn to value others. Con: Cost. Parents criticizing other kids. Time at night.
A2. (c) Pros far outweigh the cons. So many positive aspects of my middle & high school days came from extra curricular activities
A3: I think this is a sacred cow that needs tipped over.
I prefer to have them suspended if need be on a week-to-week basis to provide motivation to bring the grade up during the season.
A3) absolutely!! The ExC act provides opp to bld relationships and answer the "why" Ss has academic challenges
A3: No they shouldn't. Academics are more important than sports and ss need to realize that life lesson. https://t.co/Dc6YVP6nqV
Q3: Should a student in MS/HS be allowed to participate in extra curriculars if they are failing or fail a class?
A3 I think yes, but with limitations & chance to earn back. Coaches/sponsors can help build motivation through genuine r'ships
A3-Extra curric is just that. Extra. School’s purpose is to help Ss learn, and if they are failing, focus should be on learning.
A3: This can be tricky, but it is crucial that all adults have a high level of communication to suppt the scholar who is failing.
That's a tough answer and not clear cut A3.1) I think coaches/sponsors should really emphasize academics and build relationship..
A3: I hate preventing kids from participating in a passion due to grades. I know why, but I struggle with the value.
We need to embrace all students and work with them. Hook 'em and then hold them accountable.
A3: Parents, coaches, teachers, and students are a team A case by case basis may be more appropriate, districts have some policies
A3: I think its important for students to make school 1st priority before extras, so if they are failing, they should not play
A2 There are strong pros being a part of a community, even when you don't make the team or get the part you want, you can learn.
A3.2) relationship with Ts so there is a strong support system in and out of the class for an all around win
A3: We want Ss to learn from failure yet we penalize Ss for failing not only in grade but beyond. Is that the learning we aim for?
best comparison EVER!!!! Love it!!! 😊
Q3: maybe that's the only time they succeed and feel like THEY MATTER
very true. Ss sometimes need to rely on others and can't participate
A3 Also. It depends on EC. We only have 2 chances to perform in speech during each season. Miss first, can't do 2nd
A3. I think about purpose of the grade..and why they are failing..is it assignment completion or lack of understanding of skill?
A3: Absolutely. It may be an important link. But there needs to be student accountability. The two should be integrated
A3: why are they failing? How could this be used to create a Win-Win? What is current practice or policy?
A3. No. Student athletes. Extra curriculars. The first word in both of these phrases spell it out - academics come first. Period.
A3: The bigger question is, why arent there structures keeping Ss from failing? Doesn't have to be OR...can be AND.
A3: I always go with people before policy. Let's do all we can to support the whole student.
A3: Yes. Ss need to learn commitment to a higher purpose and they are representing something bigger than themselves.
There needs to be something tied to this so the S is improving his grade while he is still participating. https://t.co/7HrDTFpYGi
A3) absolutely!! The ExC act provides opp to bld relationships and answer the "why" Ss has academic challenges
A3 We should be talking to students about academics as much as the extra curricular-put in the time and effort both places-culture
A3: It is critical that we do a couple of things: investigate the why within the failure and have a proactive support mechanism.
Failures = natural consequences- spend allowance, I don't get more $. It's a hard lesson better learned young.
A3: Nope. Student athlete because of the student part. I get it's what keeps some in school, but at what cost?
Yes and yes! This is the correct attitude. https://t.co/ChaGi0Ya6f
A3: The bigger question is, why arent there structures keeping Ss from failing? Doesn't have to be OR...can be AND.
A3 - If we could see years into future, we would know correct answer now. Would we stop a future famous actor from being in play?
As a coach I paid more attention to the student-athlete's academic effort than their grade
Great point https://t.co/etImmB6agQ
A3: I hate preventing kids from participating in a passion due to grades. I know why, but I struggle with the value.
I like your thoughts here. It is more productive to ask good questions than draw a line in the sand on this topic
Eric, principal in North Liberty, IA. Hoping in late (for a bit).
A3 I think we need to find a way to work with students who are in danger of failing and losing chance to participate.
If it is because of a skill....are structures in place to supplement instruction?
A3: A lot ppl are focusing on S-athletes, what about band/choir/drama, etc? you need to investigate why they failed
Maybe we shouldn't be asking if they get to participate, but what is happening in the classroom that is causing them to fail.
A3: We need to develop policies that are communicated but allowed to be fluid enough to create opportunities for students.
A3: Figure out the why, communicate and have high expectations. They'll rise to the occasion if the relationship is there.
absolutely agree. This is tricky because of inconsistent grading by Ts. However Ss need to put academics first
I've seen too many failing grades due to poor teaching...not really the athlete's fault.
A3 From a HS perspective, there is an eligibility requirement. Activities are ultimately earned privileges.
I agree we need to know why the are failing. Being proactive rather than reactive is best
Love this! https://t.co/O9Ow8dJCCl
A3: The bigger question is, why arent there structures keeping Ss from failing? Doesn't have to be OR...can be AND.
A3: Whatever the guidelines, focus needs to be: now that we have found they didn't learn, what is the next step, regardless of ECs
A3: It definitely helps when the coaches are involved with encouragement for good grades.
I've also seen Ss sabotaged by poor home life situations...Should schools also punish them for that?
Q4: Share your opinion on these topics: A). PE Waivers B). Cut Policies C). Loss of Class Time D). Length of Activities
Well said https://t.co/hfWuBALtmj
A3: I always go with people before policy. Let's do all we can to support the whole student.
We can work in ways to keep Ss accountable WHILE participating, not the last week/days before final grades publish
I would like to think ' no pass no play' should motivate but that doesn't always work...
Absolutely. We need to have the appropriate supports in place and communication to not get to this point. https://t.co/yFsUW32rc0
I agree we need to know why the are failing. Being proactive rather than reactive is best
coaches encouraging good grades is definitely beneficial and helpful
wait...wtf is a PE waiver? You can waive PE now!?
A3: As a coach, I want Ts sending me their concerns. A F2F w/a player holds some weight. :)
A4A:I feel that a Ss should do PE if they have a game that night, it makes them look more important than other non-athletes
I would agree in some situations.i coach around relationship bldg & if it's a T issue,Ss shouldn't pay the price😊
In some systems, students can be waived from PE due to athletic participation. https://t.co/tWrULAhPeT
wait...wtf is a PE waiver? You can waive PE now!?
Q3 has hit a hot button! Love this discussion!
A4 Loss of class time can become a problem with some activities. And this is where the responsibility factor comes in.
A4: A) Should be considered B) Not an issue due to man power C) Loser deal and should be avoided D) An issue if it impacts school.
A book, Teaching With Poverty in Mind, completely changed my thinking on these issues. A must-read for all educators
A4 Use of an LMS where school work can be posted can be a help for many students when they are missing class.
A3 PE waivers allow students to fulfill state requirement in alternate ways if taking an extra major subject.
A4B: Cut Policies depend on how big your school is, but you have only so many spots on a bball team
Take your pick on one or two!
A4 athletes should not have to participate in PE, everyone else should, we should not cut kids-find ways to keep them involved!
A4: PE Waivers - if a S is actively involved in extra curricular that teaches healthy lifestyle, waivers should be OK.
A4: We struggle with MS students missing class time due to activities being so early in the pm...hard for students &teachers
A4: Loss of class time is hard on kids leaving, teachers trying to keep them up-to-speed, and the coaches who leave classes early.
A4: With all the technology we have, why would Ss need to lose class time? Asynchronous learning...wow. Seems solvable.
Our district does that. It frees up athletes to take other elective classes. Has been really great for my son!
A4: If the goal is student learning & preparedness for what comes next we need to create guidelines that work for today's student.
A4 loss of class time is difficult with any class but math especially. If you miss something it could be hard to get back on track
What about Marching Band and Cheer? Sometimes ppl only apply to mainstream sports.
A4 Late nights get to be a problem during the week also. Kids get home fairly late sometimes and then have homework on top of it
A4 completely against cuts before Varsity. Keep kids involved as long as possible. The 7th grade title means nothing-play em all
A4: Cut policies — ExCurricss at the HS level should be open for all, whenever possible.
What happened to differentiation?
This MUST be our future. Totally agree. https://t.co/GJ1FHLx0TI
A4: With all the technology we have, why would Ss need to lose class time? Asynchronous learning...wow. Seems solvable.
A4-PE waivers for Ss involved in two or more sports, allow Ss opp. to take higher level classes. I don't agree with cut policies.
A4: We have to go back to our purpose. Are we trying to get kids to comply, seat time? Or grow and have authentic experiences?
When I was in high school back in the dark ages, our band and cheerleaders did have waivers
A4) Opposed to PE waivers. A great PE course is set up with unique important outcomes that don't necessarily happen in activities
A4: Loss of Class Time - Sometimes this is inevitable due to larger travel time to events. Learning must be made up, though.
A4 look at a fitness course that goes beyond PE & fulfills speed/agility & weight lifting during day instead of after practice
A4: A) Fine. B) Not in favor until V. C) Adults need to be flexible. D) Generally too long (i.e. Practice time).
A4. PE is more than just the competition sports we have available to Ss. Plus do waivers create a sense of inequity with Ss?
A4: All can relate to equity, are the policies the same for EVERY student sport/extra curricular? If not, all 4 are problematic
technology should definitely help with that barrier though - learning doesn't just happen in the classroom
Evening . A bit late to the game. I'm Rob, and an AP at a middle school in St Paul.
Good evening Coming in a bit late!
A4: Multiple activities form well rounded Ss & often overlap. Ss should NOT be punished for being involved in multiple things.
A4 conti: loss/class time will only grow since we travel so far. Gets old but can b handled. Length of seasons & gms need lowered
Thank you for the recommendation. I'll add it to my list.
A4: I think we can be more mindful of practice times. This can get crazy if we are not focused on it.
A4: A.) Why not? It would allow them to take a diff elective or receive academic supports during that time
A4: Length is tough on kids and classes. No idea on the solution.
no way! I was in marching band and never got a waiver!! For 4 years in high school!
I agree. The policies need to be the same for all involved. No favoritism
I agree Melinda. Same in Spanish. They miss what goes on in class-- just a worksheet they take with them. https://t.co/PipruGk1D0
A4 loss of class time is difficult with any class but math especially. If you miss something it could be hard to get back on track
Q5 is coming up in one minute!
A4 Length: we burn kids out with length of practice and year long demands. Encourage time away, involvement in other activities
A4) Cut policies: Schools should find ways to find appropriate opportunity for interested students. May not be varsity.
A4: Loss of class times are a huge deal for us. Most of our away games are at least 2 hours away.
A4: I'll throw it out there with practice times, it's not always school activities, how about clubs during season?
We get around this with WIFI on our activities buses. Learning must be made up, not always time. :) https://t.co/ma4QlPD2hF
technology should definitely help with that barrier though - learning doesn't just happen in the classroom
generally agree, BUT...24 kids on a V bball team can be problematic for kid 1-24
What is fair does not always look equal. Just like acad, it needs to be differentiated.
A4 (continued):Communicate w/ ts on athletes leaving so ur on the same page.Practices should be 2 hrs. https://t.co/pT1FSbwLv8
Q4: Share your opinion on these topics: A). PE Waivers B). Cut Policies C). Loss of Class Time D). Length of Activities
I agree they shouldn't be punished for being involved, but it doesn't make it any easier on Ts and Ss being gone
It doesn't happen anymore, I'm sure
I was thinking the same thing!I hope my child isn't taking PE solely for phys act-bc someone's missing the mark
A4: Ss who miss class & late nights -- I have ended up recording all my lessons online for students who frequently miss for Xcurs
Q5: In what ways have athletics/activities benefitted or served the needs of students with disabilities?
A4: A) PE waiver: would LOVE IT!!(we don't offer it B) Cut policy:only if F2F conversation is had explaining why &how to improve.
The adults NEED to be flexible! https://t.co/OfKRi7WkAW
A4: Multiple activities form well rounded Ss & often overlap. Ss should NOT be punished for being involved in multiple things.
A4: Much of this also applies to students who work (and have to). How do we ensure academic focus for all?
agreed other ts need to be flexible and realistic of the student athlete.
A5: I think it gives them a sense of belonging to a group and acceptance by a school/community
A5) Engagement and relationships are built!
Q4: Cuts are inevitable, part of real life. Other opp should be made avail like intramurals or clubs
A5: For those Ss that struggle academically, they can sometimes find success, build relations, build confidence, etc.
preach!!🙌🏻 real world experiences are what people learn from.
A5: I look at students w/ significant disabilities who have served as managers and become as much a part of the team as the star
A5: When approached correctly extra-curricular activities can be the most inclusive environment.
Yes exactly I totally agree!
negative returns become a real possibility. Coaches should be organized and efficient.
agree. From a personal experience. My daughter, freshman, on the dance team. Lots of practice plus homework load hard
A5: Activities allow Ss w/special needs to be part of a group. They allow those w/out disabilities the opportunity to learn & grow
A5) As often as not, when challenged students participate, the rest of the students are the ones who benefit.
A5 involvement that leads to meaningful relationships with their General Ed peers
Hey neighbors! Join tomorrow to continue your learning! We'll be discussing Teacher Leaders! https://t.co/aTLniksP3r
Q5: this is the time they can shine and be part of a team, form a new identity
A5 I've had a # of managers over the years with disabilities-they were a big part of the team, players welcomed them to the team!!
A5 same pros as any student athlete. Purpose/role contribution/pride/passion/communication great &authentic opportunities for all
A5: most of these activities are inclusive. Ss have a chance to see each other in a new way- brings out many unique strengths.
Q5: More academic/club groups have opened doors for sure. More can still be done to be inclusive.
A5: Just like Ss w/o disabilities, it allows Ss to be a part of a team and build relationships. That benefits all Ss.
Yep! Right here. https://t.co/IxR9J2VUwy
A4: We have to go back to our purpose. Are we trying to get kids to comply, seat time? Or grow and have authentic experiences?
yes! That is what stretches ss too thin and causes unnecessary controversy. Do it in the summer, not on school time.
A5: Good way to include those with significant disabilities also great for confidence building and build relationships with others
Absolutely agree. Every student has the opportunity for an insertion point in clubs and teams. https://t.co/GSuc6PYplj
A5: most of these activities are inclusive. Ss have a chance to see each other in a new way- brings out many unique strengths.
A5. ECs help build acceptance, a sense of belongingness, and allows for friendships that may not develop in a school days.
A5 Many times players learned as much as the managers-similar goals, similar expectations, realized we are all humans with issues
A5: Kids are kids. We want to foster success, promote equity- tell all kids they have a place in the school & show it.
A5: Some of the great stories come from those who've been included on the team, then have their "one shining moment".
glad you are catering to all ss. Nice to see them not being punished for being a student athlete. Well done!👏🏼
Ss w/ any disability (physical, intellectual, etc) involved in activites provides awesome opp. for those Ss + their classmates
A5: All Ss deserve to be part of something bigger than themselves regardless of physical, mental, or social/emotional disability.
A5: Promotes empathy on everyone's part! Gives those students a place to belong!
A5: Inclusivity, acceptance on all levels, understanding by peers, real world learning
Could not agree more Dan! https://t.co/PkeCxtPVdy
A5: All Ss deserve to be part of something bigger than themselves regardless of physical, mental, or social/emotional disability.
A5.2: AND think about the participation of Ss w/ disabilities and the empathy that's built in other Ss
A5 They give them an outlet. A place to shine. It gives them and their teammates a new way to see the disabled student
A5 PE has been one of the greatest resources for our Ss with special needs. They flourish in the space. Comfort is found there.
We are just about ready for Q6.
A5: Gives them a place to build relationships as well. It shows that Extra-Curr has places for ALL students. Shows inclusion
A5: There are many ex. curr. activities for kids with disabilities besides sports: robotics, plays, set-building, service clubs.
A5)this would be highly dependent on S & disability/sppts the S needs.. wouldn't it? Overall-same benefits as SW/OD
Q6: Should schools be able to enforce code of conduct policies for violations that occur off school grounds/SM sites?
Yes, empathy is something that I think gets overlooked a lot. We need more of this.
Can’t believe how fast this hour flies! Keep on rocking, !
very good point. By being in the same activity or sport it can lead to better understanding
A5-By serving needs of Ss w/ disabilities, they serve needs of us all. Some great videos have displayed great events by Ss w/dis.
You are really asking the tough questions tonight, Dan.
A5:Ss love being managers/play on a team (any min. they can get).Ss encourage them & they get limelight. https://t.co/zCMjc3ZKZk
Q5: In what ways have athletics/activities benefitted or served the needs of students with disabilities?
Yes, and many times those opp are the only ones where they can understand that concept! https://t.co/hHGlPf2uiv
A5: All Ss deserve to be part of something bigger than themselves regardless of physical, mental, or social/emotional disability.
I agree -- it's definitely not just for the student with disability. It's for ALL students.
Ss with diabilities. Student first language.
Agreed! We expect kids know about this...but all kids need good models
A6:On SM the school should if it disrupts the school day or threatens the safety of others or the school
Trying to bring out the best in our group and I have to say that is bringing it! https://t.co/V0f3yvCPcD
You are really asking the tough questions tonight, Dan.
Empathy. Empathy. Empathy.
Belonging. Belonging. Belonging.
Such great life lessons. https://t.co/APDQ1mlqaB
A5-By serving needs of Ss w/ disabilities, they serve needs of us all. Some great videos have displayed great events by Ss w/dis.
A6: Yes as they do in in life and in college. We are actually discussing a demerit system which will encompass both.
A6: I think so...BUT the ENFORCEMENT MUST be about TEACHING
Great convo that hits close to home. Have to bow out early! Thanks for inviting me back with open arms
A6: It would be almost impossible to enforce. If it trickles into school, then that's another issue
A6: Ahh....Dan, you had to ask that one! Tough...I think yes if incidents creep into the school day and impact learning/safety.
Wish IHSAA / IGHSAU would have a policy. But that was struck down by courts years ago
A5 (continued): Community and school/team also praises those ss for working hard and not giving up on their dreams.
Right! How can we create teachable moments to help them LEARN? https://t.co/FR3jo4yqFc
A6: I think so...BUT the ENFORCEMENT MUST be about TEACHING
A6: A great opp to show Ss the importance of creating a positive digital footprint. It’s important there are consequences.
A6: yes - schools should enforce conduct policy no matter where it takes place, especially w/ what goes on w/ social media!
A6) in an effort to be consistent in expectations, both Ts and Ss should be held accountable when representing school/district
A6 It is something I talk with my kids about. Being respectful of others no matter where Being careful of the impression they make
A6: Yes. Extra Cs are not just what kids do, they help support who they become. Responsibility, commitment, etc. must be held up
Q6 Teach them skills they can use outside the class, decrease the need for a code of conduct.
A6B:Off of school grounds, we are seeing incidents even at the college level where Ss are disciplined
Q6: Yes, Ss should be held accountable for their actions. Be good role models and be good ambassadors for the school
Tough stuff, no question. https://t.co/Aqa37jJXrs
But without a policy, coaches would have their own policies and certainly would not be enforced equitably across activities
A6: That's a tricky one, but if a school counselor can provide resources for student and family, there's some responsibility there
A6: I understand the intent of this question, but at some point the parents have to step up and hold their kids responsible
A6 Whew. Tough one. I think if it violates code of conduct than yes. But the consequences need to be about growth/change for S.
Q6 Code of conduct outside of school, no. But be a part of the comm., be a part of their lives, and effect change.
building empathy is HuGe!
Teaching > Punishing, but you already know that 😉
A6: Code of conduct: without a doubt. SM: that's a gray area for me. I want my to excerise some self-control. 1/2
I think so too. Schools can't police everything
true for all students, but especially those who are involved in extracurriculars! https://t.co/4HRR1Dgude
Q6: Yes, Ss should be held accountable for their actions. Be good role models and be good ambassadors for the school
A6: whatever the policy is, we need to make sure that we set Ss up for success by explicitly teaching & communicating expectations
Point is, as admin we can take that conduct code out of coaches hands to try end enforce it consistently
I’m digging this language. Are you representing your school positively as an ambassador? https://t.co/X7MCeM3L8k
Q6: Yes, Ss should be held accountable for their actions. Be good role models and be good ambassadors for the school
Love the perspective from the secondary folks on answers to Q6.
A6: Yes. They have the privilege of representing their school. They are role models for the younger kids. https://t.co/kvxbW8CFrz
A6: yes - schools should enforce conduct policy no matter where it takes place, especially w/ what goes on w/ social media!
A6: Yes cuz student athletes still REPRESENT the school even off school grounds and not on school time. https://t.co/eKkurJvYOU
Q6: Should schools be able to enforce code of conduct policies for violations that occur off school grounds/SM sites?
It makes me glad I'm a K-5 principal Tim! LOL
A6: 2/2 but in regards to SM, I have no problems dropping the hammer if tomfoolery is around! :)
A6 Yes, as part of the lifelong lessons ECs teach , students should be held to a code of conduct
A6) We tell Ss employers, colleges, everyone looks at SM & consequences but it doesn't apply to them now only in the future?
misuse of social media comes w/ a lot of natural consequences for the abuser. Important to talk about those.
Thanks for a great chat- Monday morning comes too early 😕
Ironic that we expect SO much out of student athletes and so little out of pro athletes. It all catches up eventually
great point. The idea that you are representing yourself, your team, and your school
I sometimes feel like a failure if my school can't be all things to all people. But it's not realistic. https://t.co/dimOEJ1zIA
I think so too. Schools can't police everything
Our final question is coming right up.
Great point Mande! Many people have been turned down for jobs due to employers looking at their SM accounts.
I totally agree! That is where I have spent my entire career.
Q6 A code of conduct outside of school isn't the answer. Our job is to set them up in the class for success outside the class.
As teachers we are responsible for the safety of our students.. If SM is hindering that, we need to step in
Thanks for a great convo! Makes me glad I'm in Elem, but I have some new ideas on how to suppt the transition to MS/HS
I had a huge talk about this with my LEGO League team at competition. So important for them.
You are right, but are we teaching them how to handle SM responsibly? Mostly we just turn them loose
Q7: What measures can schools/districts take to reduce costs rather than eliminate programs?
A6-Yes. Ss represent their school regardless of where they are. It is still a great opportunity to teach and build relationships.
A6: Absolutely! That is our name on the jersey or event. We are the last institution concerned about character & morals.
bc we throw up our hands and claim 'it happened after school hours, we don't control that' which is bogus.
A6 looking back, the only code of conduct we had was for Ss involved in sports...no one else
A6: Our conversations need to center around teaching and appropriate use. Also, that there are consequences for all choices.
I like where you are going here. Restorative vs punative. It's about S growth and learning. Not control.
I agree. Helps me as my kids are now both in the secondary level
Absolutely! We talk a lot about how things never truly go away and that your SM is only a screenshot away from stardom!
I know. I just want to make sure we are teaching them the right way to handle SM
A7: Fund raise as much as possible, look for community partnerships, encourage volunteering, and conserve as much as possible
A7 Cut Administrator salaries instead of student activities :)
A7: creative funding- grants. Share your successes with the world, invite community/business. Create partnerships
starts in 5 minutes: Sharing samples of the new curriculum.
great opportunities to build character
A7.1: Idk, but a quote from one of my favorite "We've got to think big, we've got to think cheap..."
A7: Scout out community volunteers. Look for grants! Ask partners in ed. Try local Universities for S volunteers.
Our job is not to control. Our job is to educate them and help them grow. Control often turns punative.
A7: Mixture of pay to play, appropriate budgeting, tickets=sales=$, grants...
A7 We run JH concession stand for booster club for some extra $. It's hard tho because speech kids involved in everything + work
A7.2: "...we've got to think about the problem differently."
Its a lil scary to think how much elem. students are affected by SM outside of school today...more than we think!
that is true. We are 1:1 and we do work with students about importance of digital citizenship
A7 Look for possible community partnerships, conference realignments especially at the big school level would cut back on travel
A7: Voters must recognize that limited education funding results in the reduction of activities as schools are forced to limit.
A7: I love the idea of adding a budget line/code for Innovation, a flexible account for what makes student impact.
So why do we educate that there are only consequences outside of the K-12 world?
A7: Every activity takes a turn to run concessions then they get a portion of the money earned
A7. Get community support, Look for grants, ask parents for help.
A7 Consolidation among schools could save money in multiple areas including extra curriculars
Thanks for sharing tonight on ! Love learning with you all and hearing your thoughts on educational hot-topics!
A7: Give same opportunity to all extra curricular activities to raise $. Concessions, tailgates etc. https://t.co/iByt2VY57y
Q7: What measures can schools/districts take to reduce costs rather than eliminate programs?
Oh, absolutely. I don't see it every day, but when it does arise, it usually isn't so great.
A7: Have to be creative with funding, personnel, and how we schedule.
A7 What matters most for districts? Be laser focused on your goals. Implement with fidelity. Grow capacity. Spend $ on S success.
A7: Educate the public: fewer $$$ = fewer activities, period.
A7: Good ? - Fundraise, concessions, admission, community support through partnerships.
So true! Even things like the new Early Literacy Law are UNFUNDED! We always have to cover 4 new initiatives.
very true. Teaching Ss about digital citizenship important for our elementary students
our school does this...the money that is earned gets put into that org's account...every lil bit helps!
A7: We work in education and are the thriftiest people IMO. Reach out to the community, crowd source, be creative
Alrighty , I'm off to . You should swing by and say hello.
Great chat. Thanks for moderating
A7: Just because it has always been in the budget doesn't mean it needs to be there. Yearly budget inventories to create capital.
couldn't agree more-we have cut coaches in 9 years-better school funding would have saved many coaches & teachers!
A7 (continued): We do that @ ELC. Sports teams, robotics, dance team, and fine arts all have same opportunities.
Thanks for letting me be a part of tonight. I really enjoyed the conversations and can't wait to participate in more edchats!
Thanks to my co-moderators and . Be sure to follow some new friends to grow your PLN!
Join us again next week! Let us know how we can make this chat best fit your needs!
Our school does this too. I think it works out great!
We teach DC as well. Should all be lumped into "citizenship", which it probably will be @ some point.
A7: partner with as many local organ/businesses as possible, fundraise, be creative/think outside the box
I'd agree with this to a point. Our transportation costs have gone way up as we are larger than our neighbors now.
Thanks all for a great chat and some things to think about. Until next week!
Thank you for joining us & sharing your thoughts on . It is always great learning with all of you.
This was my 1st time on ! Loved being a part of it! Looking forward to the next time.
A7: Tough one. Reduce travel/gms. Any reduction of costs just waters things down to where it isn't worth it. Need 4% from state!
it is! I had to drop it this yr while getting my MA. I miss it
