I'm Kennedra. I'm guest hosting tonight. I'm a middle school PE teacher. I'm also the president of @MAHPERD (Maryland Association of Health, Recreation & Dance). Excited for tonight's topic! #mdeschat
Hey team #mdeschat! Hope all are well. Greg- K, #TeamFelegy. Relaxing tonight in prep for going on a youth retreat this weekend w/ my church. Hope all are well.
Bonnie, 4th grade, PG Co. My word is rushed... because I certainly feel more rushed this year and haven’t incorporated movement and mindfulness like I have in the past. #mdeschat
Hey Kennedra! Glad to have you leading tonight’s conversation! So glad that you were willing and able. Looking forward to the dialogue. Yes, love walking. #mdeschat
A2b: Being able to accomplish specific physical tasks like skipping is a direct correlation to the learning process. It shows that both hemispheres of the brain can communicate with one another. #mdeschat
This is a great point. The more engaged our students are...the less likely they are to misbehave because they have something to keep them occupied. I used to have elem Ss dance their way to line up so they'd keep their hands to themselves. #mdeschat
A3. Almost all of our new curricula includes movement opportunities in the classroom, of course, good teachers already new how important this is #mdeschat
A3: One method way back from student teaching was using music during warmup. Louder the music, you run, softer, you walk. All while taking attendance. It can be done in any class setting. #mdeschat
A3 I am a HUGE @GoNoodle fan. Sometimes I just take my kids out for a stroll around the building. Things get tough in class, a quick walk in the sunshine helps! #mdeschat
A3: In HS we might be out of our seats for #FourCorners, but I honestly do not have as much movement in my class as I did when I taught Elementary. I used Yoga cards then! #mdeschat
It works! I used it for me elem students on the time. I use an online timer for both my elem & middle schoolers. Did a jump rope challenge...was how long they could jump before timer went off. Use the same idea in class #mdeschathttps://t.co/Yujbus5TY1

A3- Love incorporating music into the daily learning. Songs by Mark D. Pencil for math are some of my favorites to use during instruction. Good beats; makes the Ss want to dance, and reinforcing math skills in the process. #mdeschat

Secondary Ss also like to move! Try Snowball. Here are the directions for the activity. I would set a timer & explain the directions clearly so students don't hit others. #mdeschat
Have you heard of Jack Hartman? I use his videos as well! Here's an example: https://t.co/pRrXmvAk7m#mdeschat He has videos for counting by 5 's and 10's. I used him for warm-ups for elem
Elementary and secondary students also like Rock, Paper, Scissors. This can be done in the classroom as much needed brain boost activity. #mdeschathttps://t.co/3T5EBLuYr5
I think I’ve heard Jack Hartman songs, but I don’t recall this one. Cool! Like the incorporation of specific exercises during the counting process. #mdeschat
A3 Being enthusiastic about the exercise/activity myself. I feel this gives energy to the students. On top of that love to join in and work with the students in any activity that takes place. #mdeschat
Here's another example of how to use physical activity for elementary and secondary students. Doesn't matter the content..the teacher can come up with the questions! #mdeschat
A4. Even teachers like me that have no sports skills, have to play pretend they are in it. Students need the encouragement and model to learn how to live healthy lives #mdeschat
Here's a movement resource I got from Health Ed supervisor. It's an active check for understanding. Ask students a question & have them use a pose or movement to answer. Can use for elem or secondary students in large or limited space #mdeschat
A6. A mental health approach to living where you focus on the moment while recognizing what you’re doing, why you’re doing it, and what you need to do to be successful #mdeschat
A6: Mindfulness is awareness of self and how you interact within the world around you. When I took a class on this we practised sucking on a piece of candy without biting or digesting it in full form. Enjoying the fullness of self and the world. #mdeschat
A7- My K Ss done some mindfulness exercises on @GoNoodle. At first, they thought it was odd because it was so different from the other movement exercises we had been doing, but the more exposure they had, the more they began to embrace it. #mdeschat
The facilitator shared that she only eats one piece of candy that can last for more than an hour. She really enjoys the flavor! #EverLastingGobStopper#mdeschat
