A1 Explain what is involved the various choices so they know the scope. Also direct them to choose a response type that they feel is a strength for them #5thchat
  • teachchoice Apr 3 @ 8:07 PM EDT
A1: I spend the first few weeks of school modeling each step of the learning process through our assigned scope/sequence standards. As an ELA teacher, I always start with the Dictionary Skills. #5thchat
  • Dale_Chu Apr 3 @ 8:07 PM EDT
HAPPENING NOW: @teachchoice moderating a chat on rigor and student choice. Follow along at #5thchat!

Hi I'm Amanda from Texas. I teach 8th gr Science. Hope it's ok I'm here. I loved the topic for tonight. #5thchat
  • micromanda Apr 3 @ 8:08 PM EDT
A1: I set up a choice menu and walk them through how to complete the task. I give many different opportunities for them to choose what they would like to complete. #5thchat
  • PaulSolarz - Moderator Apr 3 @ 8:08 PM EDT
A1 - Sometimes, I like to front-load my students before giving them a choice to ensure a smooth process, but more often than not, I like to see how they make choices & give feedback for improving the process (e.g. flexible seating, project topics, voting with the class). #5thchat
  • yenneam Apr 3 @ 8:10 PM EDT
A1 Like @teachchoice, lots of modeling at the beginning, gradual release, finding student leaders who can then coach others. #5thchat
  • mrsseibel5th - Moderator Apr 3 @ 8:10 PM EDT
A1: spend a LOT of time modeling at beginning of year teaching students different tools #5thchat
  • teachchoice Apr 3 @ 8:11 PM EDT
I love seeing what direction students come up with when they just start with a topic! #5thchat

A1. We discuss growth mindset and how we learn from the mistakes we make. We have been doing this in our school for the last 4 years. Kids are starting to get it. We talk about being pirates and running our own ships. @PaulSolarz We practice and practice the first month #5thchat
  • teachchoice Apr 3 @ 8:12 PM EDT
Q2: How do you implement leveled or differentiated choice? #5thchat
  • teachchoice Apr 3 @ 8:12 PM EDT
#5thchat LOVE seeing this is a SCHOOL initiative!

I love it! I believe that kids need to make those mistakes and it needs to be a common part of their day so that mistakes become so common that no one fears them! We learn from our mistakes, so it's important that teachers don't prevent all of them! :) #5thchat

A2: I have created choice boards in ELA and math. We have done @Wonderopolis to learn how to create and research ? #5thchat
  • RLvballcoach Apr 3 @ 8:14 PM EDT
A2 I introduce different technology tools each week and discuss some of the ways it could be used to prove their learning. Kids sometimes run with those ideas, but often will come up with their own ideas. #5thchat
  • msrowe817 Apr 3 @ 8:14 PM EDT
A1/2 I model for my students all the different choices. Once students are comfortable with the tasks, more are added. As I work with small groups, I differentiate based on skills and add in different components. #5thchat
  • teachchoice Apr 3 @ 8:15 PM EDT
A2: My room was self-paced and student choice so they had an elevated KWL chart to self monitor and follow. (I'll post a copy in A6). I also gave them a chart of 9 wks standards they are aiming to master so they can multi-task. #5thchat
  • micromanda Apr 3 @ 8:15 PM EDT
A2: I differentiate the tasks by shortening it or adding more support to it. To extend it for my GT kids, I add more tasks to increase the level of critical thinking and connections to real world. #5thchat
  • LindaEdwardsi Apr 3 @ 8:16 PM EDT
A2 I feel like offering choice boards is in itself levelled/differentiated. Certain response types are more challenging - level up or level down #5thchat
  • shammanaj Apr 3 @ 8:16 PM EDT
A2 When I give a choice menu I also list suggested ways they can go "above & beyond" #5thchat
  • teachchoice Apr 3 @ 8:18 PM EDT
Laying out higher expectations for the taking often become their "normal" choice! #5thchat

  • RLvballcoach Apr 3 @ 8:18 PM EDT
A2. More ideas... my high levels kids will automatically push themselves because it is talked about in their conferences. My lower kids need more guidance and more conferencing. I will differentiate as we see necessary. #5thchat
  • teachchoice Apr 3 @ 8:19 PM EDT
Q3: How do you monitor progress and engagement? #5thchat
  • yenneam Apr 3 @ 8:19 PM EDT
A2 Depends on if we're learning a new skill or practicing. Having the option of partner work for practice will help differentiate without making content too simple. Choose what pushes you without being frustrating. #5thchat
  • AssignmentHelpN Apr 3 @ 8:20 PM EDT
  • teachchoice Apr 3 @ 8:21 PM EDT
Q3: I built the "TEK-Ometer" to help monitor progress. Every Mastered TEK received a red mastery card. We would celebrate those cards. To get mastery a student had to get 90% on an assessment. #5thchat
  • RLvballcoach Apr 3 @ 8:22 PM EDT
A3 I consider myself LUCKY as I team teach. 2 eyes are better than 1:) Conferencing and exit tickets telling what kids did that day are helpful to keeping track. Also have a spreadsheet where I can check off if standard has been met and if it is mastered or not. #5thchat
  • yenneam Apr 3 @ 8:22 PM EDT
A3 Looking at task completion or understanding? Quick formative assessments help me with understanding, checklists/choice boards help me with task completion. Skill-based small groups are formed from formative assessment data. #5thchat
  • LindaEdwardsi Apr 3 @ 8:23 PM EDT
A3 The engagement part is easy observation. Students send completed responses to me so I know when they are complete. Sometimes I have a Tic Tac Toe board and they put an X on completed items. #5thchat
  • micromanda Apr 3 @ 8:25 PM EDT
A3: formative assessments along the way help monitor the learning #5thchat
  • teachchoice Apr 3 @ 8:26 PM EDT
Q4: How do you provide assessments for mastery in student choice? #5thchat
  • _izzylondon Apr 3 @ 8:26 PM EDT
How does monitoring personal progress and peer progress play out? Do you notice competition? Can there be positive competition? #5thchat
    In reply to @teachchoice
  • micromanda Apr 3 @ 8:27 PM EDT
A3b: I found that with the choice boards and setting the atmosphere in the classroom kept my Ss engaged. They were allowed to work with a partner but complete their work indiv. I couldn't believe how they stayed on task. #5thchat
  • teachchoice Apr 3 @ 8:28 PM EDT
A5: I had some that were built, with pretty high expectations. I never had multiple choice. They have to earn 90% or above to master. I also had option live verbal discussions and student choice projects that prove deeper understanding. Btw-I taught 3rd grade. #5thchat
  • shammanaj Apr 3 @ 8:28 PM EDT
A3 I do checks along the way to make sure Ss are progressing. If not we talk about why...may need clarification, different work environment, etc. #5thchat
  • LindaEdwardsi Apr 3 @ 8:31 PM EDT
A5 I look at the process and end products, Reflection pieces, and summative assessments, presentations etc. I like the kids to assess themselves with the same rubric I'm using prior to me assessing. Then we have good info to conference #5thchat
  • teachchoice Apr 3 @ 8:32 PM EDT

Q5: How do you know your students are taking their learning to a challenging level? #5thchat
  • yenneam Apr 3 @ 8:33 PM EDT
A4 I ask how they want to show me that they know it on some things. On others, I will offer choices of written, oral, multiple choice, online. What's the best way for you to communicate your understanding? #5thchat
  • RLvballcoach Apr 3 @ 8:34 PM EDT
A4 I let Ss prove their mastery through tech tools. @DoInkTweets, @Minecraft, @Flipgrid, website construction, @Animoto, @BookCreatorApp, book trailers through IMovie, to name just a few . Ss are given rubrics for each tech tool which helps with meeting standards.#5thchat
  • teachchoice Apr 3 @ 8:34 PM EDT
Being able to articulate concepts, content and ideas is a communication, life skill we need to focus on! #5thchat

    More GREAT tools!! #5thchat
  • teachchoice Apr 3 @ 8:35 PM EDT
Q5: I use constant facilitation, a mentoring system, and the KWL chart. Once a student earned mastery on a standard they were a "go to" mentor for others to help facilitate thinking and wondering questions. #5thchat
  • RLvballcoach Apr 3 @ 8:37 PM EDT
A5 I hope because I talk with kids, know their strengths and weaknesses and encourage, that I know if they are doing their work with rigor or not. #5thchat
  • teachchoice Apr 3 @ 8:39 PM EDT
Q6 Up in ONE minute! #5thchat
  • LindaEdwardsi Apr 3 @ 8:39 PM EDT
A5 I often know what they've learned by their Reflections. They often share their learning via Flipgrid. Then I can relisten to their recordings to offer feedback. #5thchat
  • teachchoice Apr 3 @ 8:40 PM EDT
Q6: I created this tool for my students to develop and engage in rigorous learning and knowledge empowerment. Do you have a tool that you can share? #5thchat
  • RLvballcoach Apr 3 @ 8:40 PM EDT
A5. More.....my Ss have to see 3 b4 me, so they know who has completed a standard and can go to them for help. If no one is ahead, they collaborate to figure out skills. I tell them that Imwill not be going to middle school with them, so they best start doing it on own #5thchat
  • teachchoice Apr 3 @ 8:42 PM EDT
Q6: I created this tool. An extd version of a KWL chart. I model at the start of the yr & then this it's their best friend. I taught 3rd but in my latest PD session I had a HS Pathophysiology Ts implement it and LOVES it! Need help or want a copy lmk! PM. #5thchat
  • shammanaj Apr 3 @ 8:42 PM EDT
A5 Whenever possible I show examples of finished work w/ level of rigor I want to see. If Ss understand expectations they have better chance of meeting them #5thchat

  • RLvballcoach Apr 3 @ 8:46 PM EDT
A6. I use this for math. Hoping this is what you are asking about. #5thchat
  • PaulSolarz - Moderator Apr 3 @ 8:46 PM EDT
    A6 - We're a grades-free classroom so we use a similar tool to you @teachchoice but without the Mastery component. #5thchat Credit: @langwitches: https://t.co/PIdLzDVAgp
  • teachchoice Apr 3 @ 8:47 PM EDT
Q7: While allowing Ss choice- are all Ss focused on the same content or have you allowed for pacing to move forward or revisit areas of content upon completion of current projects? How do you avoid idle time? #5thchat
  • teachchoice Apr 3 @ 8:49 PM EDT
A7: I use self pacing. Per 9 wks. They are front loaded w/ all the pieces they need to master. I do mini lessons ea day to follow scope/seq & hook. Then there's sm grp signup for facilitation. TONS of pre-work but so worth it. They need resources avail. #5thchat
  • yenneam Apr 3 @ 8:50 PM EDT
A5 If you can answer every question quickly, easily, and correctly, it's too easy. Embrace the struggle and discomfort of pushing harder. Need help finding that level? I'm on it! #5thchat
  • FinkTeach Apr 3 @ 8:50 PM EDT
Going to try rotation stations in my social studies class. https://t.co/OYH2StlbQF Imagine all types of choice opportunities. #5thchat
  • shammanaj Apr 3 @ 8:51 PM EDT
A7 We all follow the same calendar, but GT Ss may have content accelerated/compacted so they can explore the next grade level's version of the standard #5thchat
  • msamuelson18 Apr 3 @ 8:52 PM EDT
A7: All my students are self paced in my project based classroom. By default, S's learn content without being forced to move on. #5thchat #552peru #552bobcat
  • yenneam Apr 3 @ 8:52 PM EDT
A7 In math, they're are self-paced because I flip their math content. They pre-test and can move through content at different speeds. I have students working in 5 different units, and two who have finished 5th grade content and have moved on to 6th. #5thchat
  • LindaEdwardsi Apr 3 @ 8:53 PM EDT
A7 With choice boards they have a minimum # they have to complete. If a student is finished the minimum they are encouraged to try other activities #5thchat

A7 Personalized learning modified to fit our needs. Kids move at their own pace. 29 years of experience as hs sped teacher makes this easy for me. Small group instruction and large group seminars. Pretests tell Ss if they need seminar or work on own. Our class is BUSY #5thchat
  • teachchoice Apr 3 @ 8:54 PM EDT
Q8: Please provide your best tip advice for others to get started, overcome a challenge or up their game in student choice. #5thchat
  • teachchoice Apr 3 @ 8:55 PM EDT
I LOVE the dull roar of BUSY! Those are the best rooms! #5thchat

A8: Teach your students the learning process first. They have to own learning & all the pieces of what that means. The KWL chart really helps with the visual & chuncking their learning. It's so fun! #5thchat
