Let's get started with Q1...
-
OK, Bill. That's the last I will mention it.
-
Q1: Did you/your child celebrate Halloween at school? How?
-
-
(I'm joking. I can take it!)
-
Hi Casey! Thanks for joining
-
A1 At Kid Q's school, pre-K through 5 used to be able to go trick or treating but only if an adult went along with them.
-
Hi Lisa! Always good to see you at
-
Good to know. How well do you fit under your bed, anyway?
-
Im tolerant, but just gonna put this out there. Today's holiday is not in my celebration list. So,.if it's our topic.. sorry
-
A2: School did, encouraged fun costumes. My surly 8th grader is not entirely festive! 🎃
-
This is maybe why we need you here for this discussion!
-
-
Q2: What are some of the concerns that come up around celebrating the holidays in schools?
-
A1 I don't remember them doing much with Kid O. Then again they were pretty lame in general when it came to those kids.
-
-
-
-
Oh, shoot. Not seeing questions in the stream - but I am tuned in to 's account now. :-)
-
A1 My kids celebrated in school. Dressing up. Parties hosted by the HR moms. My HS even had Ts & Ss dress up today. Prizes.
-
-
-
The bad news coupled with the good news... Still trying to correct this reoccurring pbm...
-
A2 This time of year it's important to be aware of kids coming from different cultures.
-
A1 My child is going on 23 and living in NYC. :-) My school does costumes and sugar-based foods such as cookies/doughnuts.
-
something is up there. I thought she was muted or blocked!!
-
-
Is it me or is something wonkie tonight? I'm seeing tweets that then say no longer available. Dia de Los Muertos gremlins?
-
A1: Had our 5th graders host a party and activities for our Preschoolers. It was fabulous how they interacted!
-
Q1: Did you/your child celebrate Halloween at school? How? via
-
A2: offensive costumes mostly https://t.co/6OpEhdJ6Jg
-
-
Q2: What are some of the concerns that come up around celebrating the holidays in schools?
-
Oh oh oh. Me too! I thought I was losing it! What's up with that? https://t.co/4RLxN16TcK
-
-
Oh, shoot. Not seeing questions in the stream - but I am tuned in to 's account now. :-)
-
A2 We try to keep a global/multicultural focus on holidays. Try to keep health in mind too. But having fun is a worthy goal.
-
I keep having this pblm. Twitter just isn't responding and I keep trying to correct this. Hmnmmmm....
-
-
Q2: What are some of the concerns that come up around celebrating the holidays in schools? via
-
I know. If I need to share out questions for you, just let me know.
-
A2 When I was in grammar school, there was very little effort made towards cultural inclusion. I felt like an outsider.
-
Let me try something different and see if it helps...
-
Sara's Q2: What are some of the concerns that come up around celebrating the holidays in schools?
-
A2: Inappropriate costume choices. Perhaps more variable decision making...as if kids in MS need encouragement
-
Once again, Bill to my rescue! I OWE YOU BIG TIME!!
-
-
Q2: What are some of the concerns that come up around celebrating the holidays in schools?
-
A2 do all ss celebrate it? What if some are jehovas witness or don't believe in it? What will they do or how will the feel?
-
-
A2 offending someone's beliefs. Also, had a 2nd grdr in tears @ recess 2day ovr scary story told by classmate sensitivities
-
Part of my point for bringing up this discussion tonight.
-
A2 schools have to be careful to respect all cultures if they decide to celebrate a holiday. Know your Ss.
-
Q3: What changes have you made or have you seen around how to celebrate holidays in school?
-
A2. The biggest challenge I see is less about culture and more about kids having the funds for costumes.
-
I've seen many who have little not asking for anything but certainly having the need.
-
you are one awesome fella. I feel the love radiating from u on
-
Yes and there always is something around bought costumes and homemade ones.
-
A2:Costume choices are always a cause of concern. We only had 1 inappropriate costume across our district this yr!!
-
As an aside: One reason I was a supporter had to do with seeing him as a landsman. He talks with his hands!
-
Wow!! Just one! That's great!
-
A2 offending someone's beliefs. Also, had a 2nd grdr in tears @ recess 2day ovr scary story told by classmate sensitivities
-
Yes, tears do show up every now and then. Our school does not allow masks at all.
-
Grateful that I observed a lot of support for kidlets today. A lot of acceptance. Kindness. Compassion. Teamwork.
-
Q3 once again: Q3: What changes have you made or have you seen around how to celebrate holidays in school?
-
Yes!! Me too. It made my heart sing!
-
A3 Celebration of Christmas has become more secular. Christian in the '60s. Secular now.
-
Can someone share Q3 please?
-
Yes those as well! https://t.co/OCNaSl5W1h
-
-
And what about the witch-and-pumpkin-themed crafts, read-alouds, printables, decorations... that fill schools for weeks?
-
A3 when I was a MS T, I used the time from Thanksgiving to break to do research on holidays all over the world.
-
Q3 once again: What changes have you made or have you seen around how to celebrate holidays in school?
-
once again: Q3: What changes have you made or have you seen around how to celebrate holidays in school?
-
-
I have to run. Enjoy the chat!
-
Sara's Q3: What changes have you made or have you seen around how to celebrate holidays in school?
-
-
A3 they are much more toned down now. Last hour or two of day.
-
A3. Working in a very traditional district. The events are very traditional and I'm learning as I go.
-
-
Q4: What is the connection between resilience and celebrating holidays (or not) in schools?
-
A3 Going way back, we did Christmas, Secret Santa. Now Holidays, Secret Snowflake. Also, Halloween more costumey now.
-
I'm not changing anything......just observing and learning and helping to make tweaks for support and inclusivity.
-
A3 after 20 yrs of very little Halloween in k-2 school, we do orange I glad you can read
-
Yes, I remember those days...
-
Sorry folks. Gotta run. The littles just returned home and need baths. Night! See you next week.
-
Thanks for stopping in, Lisa. See you next time!
-
A3:Christmas isn't celebrated. It's now the holiday season w generic decor/activities. All cultures need to be acknowledged.
-
.Q4: What is the connection between resilience and celebrating holidays (or not) in schools?
-
Sara's Q4: What is the connection between resilience and celebrating holidays (or not) in schools?
-
A4 For me deciding it's OK that I am an outsider. Fitting in with myself.
-
Great!!! I can just picture this!
-
A4 I think breaks in the routine, celebrations, fun for any reason can all help build community and thus resilience.
-
Such a good answer. I think so much hinges on relationships and community.
-
A4: Managing expectations, discussing cultural traditions, respecting and validating all students
-
.Q4: What is the connection between resilience and celebrating holidays (or not) in schools? via
-
Just for the record...I have only had 2 Trick-or-Treaters thus far. :( I'm being resilient and hoping I'll get more!
-
A4 if you are not the majority religion/culture you r reminded of this blatantly during these times. That builds resilience
-
-
I went out to dinner with my mom/stepfather. In another state. :-)
My sister-in-law usually gets 400-600.
-
-
-
-
Holidays allows kids to know someone cares about them. Paents/others sacrifice for kids.
-
-
Q5: Are you or your child/ren happy about how holidays are celebrated/recognized in your school? If so why? If not, why?
-
Q5: Are you or your child/ren happy about how holidays are celebrated/recognized in your school? If so why? If not, why?
-
A5: Yes... But we can do muuuuuch better... https://t.co/ndsDDw2AiT
-
-
Q5: Are you or your child/ren happy about how holidays are celebrated/recognized in your school? If so why? If not, why?
-
Sara's Q5: Are you/your child/ren happy about how holidays are celebrated/recognized in your school? If so why? If not, why?
-
Yes, I picked up on that too when I was a kid...hard to pull these kind of things over on kids.
-
A5 I think Kid Q had mixed feelings about having aged out of trick or treating at school.
-
A5 I'm pretty happy. I think we're pretty inclusive, and the kids seem relaxed and into our holiday traditions.
-
A5 I was just as happy that she aged out of trick or treating at school. One less hassle for me.
-
Holidays add fun! Tests, tests, and more tests destroy creativity. Holidays can bring it back, along with joy!
-
Is there such a thing as aging out? I have had some old high schoolers in another place where I lived.
-
Oh, I see that struggle regularly in our middle schoolers. I went through it too.
-
When I was in school, we didn't do any of that. Never felt that disappointment.
-
Quick tangent...are many of you getting many Trick-or-Treaters?
-
I actually saw a great article on "be kind to teenagers trick-or-treating."
-
A5 When I was in 5th grade, I lost a tooth while eating a Tootsie Roll. My teacher was annoyed w me for even mentioning it
-
I'd love to see that article. Can you pass it on?
-
I have a cat. That's about it.
-
Q6: Who should be involved in making decisions about how holidays are celebrated at school?
-
Teen was out walking the dog. Told me that his parents thought he was too old. I gave him a candy bar
-
You have a big heart. I am sure you made his day!
-
-
Shoot, I can't find it. Lost in the cybercloset. :-( Sorry!
-
-
A5: Holidays break up stress & add some fun for our typical Ss. For our special needs Ss they cause some anxiety...
-
.Q6: Who should be involved in making decisions about how holidays are celebrated at school?
-
-
Sara's Q6: Who should be involved in making decisions about how holidays are celebrated at school?
-
Yes, I have seen anxiety in some students during these times.
-
A6 In general, I think decisions are best made by faculty/students together, with parent input as appropriate. :-)
-
Is that where you keep your cyberskeletons?
-
Middle school kids can trick-or-treat. They can candy to a good cause, i..e. homeless shelter or armed forces group.
-
Yes. And what about UNICEF collections? Haven't seen kids do that in awhile.
-
-
Q7: What would you like to change about how holidays are celebrated at your school?
-
Yup! Also, there was (still is?!) trick-or-treating for UNICEF. I loved that.
-
A7: I think everyday should be celebrated!
-
Sara's Q7: What would you like to change about how holidays are celebrated at your school?
-
-
Me too! Loved those orange mini-milk cartons.
-
A7 I'd just like to see more celebrations of more holidays. We're a global community - let's do 'em all!!!
-
-
A7 Make them multicultural. Less emphasis on religion and more on culture. Personal histories.
-
I LOVE the idea of personal histories!!!
-
Reminds me - I'm now doing a "Today's Student Highlight" on Facebook. :-)
-
-
Speaking of sharing...I thank everyone tonight for sharing their Halloween night with
-
It's important that we learn about and from one another. Beyond generalities.
-
-
Hard in 140. Today's was spunky feminist resistance to patriarchy.
-
Sara: "Speaking of sharing...I thank everyone tonight for sharing their Halloween night with "
-
Sara: "Thanks again to all on !"
-
...and a special thank-you to Bill for doing double-duty and retweeting for me.
-
Thanks, and . Happy imminent November!
-
A7 Maybe look at how people around the world celebrate holidays and what holidays they celebrate.
