Good evening, #TeacherFriends. It's an honor to be here with you. I'm a Teacher with Augmented Duties; teaching 5th grade. Luckily, reading came easily but I had little access to books. I longed to have books and was excited when I convinced my mother to order the newspaper.
#TeacherFriends Hello! I am Maggie from https://t.co/UErgqByF46, your co-mod, a Nanna of 6 boys, pianist, k-teacher and bulldog mom! Life is good again! Flu has gone, thankfully! How are you?
#TeacherFriends I'm an author/illustrator of picture books & original songs for children. I speak at conferences. Now in FL!
Here's a picture of my first national keynote -- for Head Start.
#TeacherFriends My library card was my favorite possession. Treasured our #PublicLibrary. I remember reading by flashlight, under the covers as a nightly ritual.
Hello! My name is Jessica and I teach grade 3 in Canada. Reading played a huge role in my childhood. My mom ran an early childhood literacy program and had a deep understanding of the importance of literacy. This meant read alouds each night to my brother and I. #TeacherFriends
#TeacherFriends My very first picture book was a huge Cinderella book for one of my early birthdays. My next favorite is a collection of Grimm's Fairy Tales that I got when I was hospitalized at age 7. It entertained me for hours.
#TeacherFriends Q1: What does the term "diverse books" mean to you? Showcase some of your favorites. Do you have 'extension' projects of how you have used your favorites? Photos?
To me diverse books means having a range of books that feature a wide range of subjects and people. I want my students to see themselves in books but also learn about others. #teacherfriends
I surely hope so. I see him slowing down a bit but I think that is due to the amount of reading done in school. We did order him an #owlcrate box for Christmas which he likes. #teacherfriends
I remember reading Roots as a teen when I visited my aunt one year. I was fascinated by the amount of books she had in her home as my home was not like this. #teacherfriends
#TeacherFriends A1: Diversity in books to me means presenting a variety of picture books featuring all ethnicities. Kids are kids, and should themselves and friends in books we read.
A1. I have no clue what diverse books would mean however to my mind something that would offer a wide range of material for every learner type would actually define diverse book. #TeacherFriends

A1: Diverse books honour ALL of our students. They recognize and celebrate our differences. I have so many favourites! One of my students did a scratch art piece based on our Indigenous Legend read aloud called How Raven Stole the Sun. #teacherfriends
#TeacherFriends A2: I love Amazing Grace! The sweet little girl with roots in Trinidad discovers she can do anything when a play about Peter Pan is performed in her school. Empowering for girls!
#TeacherFriends Q2: How do picture books help you and your students showcase our diversity? Again, with favorites and extension projects -- and links to blog articles, please.
Picture books lend themselves to opening up a conversation. When 2 of my Ss read this, you should have heard the discussion. They were trying to figure out why this would happen and when. It wasn't til the end that they discovered this took place not so long ago. #teacherfriends
Here is another example of how picture books can help us understand each other. My Ss were surprised to find out there are Hispanic Muslims. #teacherfriends

Hi! #teacherfriends I am a "future" teacher and fairly new to this. I love seeing your tweets that share the books and crafts you do in your classroom! I see myself visiting here quite often.
I love it bc it addresses name differences among cultures. I made my kiddos name tags and parents wrote the significance of their name on the back. I hung them from the ceiling all over the room. #teacherfriends
A2: Diverse books are great for teaching the strategies: Text to self, text to text and text to world. They also teach students about other cultures. #teacherfriends

I love this as well for these reasons. We have many Spanish names but often Ts "Americanize" them with English pronunciation. This book shows Ss that they can honor their name. #teacherfriends
A2 some of my favorite books are Native American Legends. We discuss the rich history of their culture. Leadung to discussions of our own traditions, and stories. #teacherfriends
#TeacherFriends Q3: Picture books can be windows (we see into other people's lives) and mirrors (we see ourselves in the story). What does this mean to you? How do you help students identify or empathize with characters in books?
Picture Books serve as windows when we are able to peek into the life of someone else. It can also be a mirror when we see ourselves reflected in the book. The Name Jar and Painted Words resonate to me as a child of ELL parents. #teacherfriends

A3: In Canada, First Nations children were forced to attend residential schools until as late as 1996. These schools caused trauma to many children. It is our history. In our class we read stories about residential schools. We look into characters’ windows. #teacherfriends
Picture books allow me to discover more about others but also through reading more about myself, my thoughts and my beliefs. Books help me make sense of the world. #teacherfriends

@KweezleQueen I love you and your mission to bring the arts into education. I feel so lucky to be just a tiny bit part of that movement. #teacherfriends
A3b Picture books give us a safe way to explore our feelings and a safe way to explore the fealings and cultures of others. The opportunity to imagine what it would be like to walk in someone else's shoes. #teacherfriends
A3. Picturebox help related stories to the real world for the readers, it helps in understanding cultural expressions and personal experiences better.#teacherfriends

Maybe safe isn't the right word...but it's been my experience that starting a discussion with a book or fictional character can be less threatening than other options. #TeacherFriends
#TeacherFriends Hard day at the office, OOPs I mean subbing for 3 year old class. A slight injury and now just no brain left to chat. But reading “books” to kids a passion. And the good they do indescribable. Books I was reminded of #choosebooks 2show #kindness
Instagram is such a resource. I have to be mindful of the time I spend there -- as I can get 'lost' in a kinda/sorta good way. Definite inspiration at every corner. #TeacherFriends
A4: This book was read to us by @JoEllenMcCarthy at a county PD. Encourages young girls to be bold, fearless, inquisitive and defy gender stereotypes. #teacherfriends
I think the classroom setting can provide a safe setting to have a shared experience via a book that might be on a difficult topic. I know that I've cried in front of my Ss while reading a book. #teacherfriends

My friend Elizabeth Jarrell has written Touch the Moon, Little Lighthouse, and Hear Him Speak. Check them out on Amazon! She’s coming in for our Math and Reading night next week. #teacherfriends
#TeacherFriends Q5: There are many educators who showcase diverse books. Who do you follow? Please share their blogs, their twitter and/or Instagram accounts.
A3: My favourite authors and illustrators of diverse books include: Sherman Alexie, Richard Van Camp and my newest favourite is in the picture below. #teacherfriends

Thank you #teacherfriends for chatting all about picture books with me this evening. I hope that you have found some new reads to add to your collection. I know I have.
Adventure awaits! Happy Reading!
#TeacherFriends I am setting up school visits in FL to conclude the school year. I also have a road trip planned to SC in mid-March, if you want to join that outing to make it a tour.
