fathers day in NZ is in September
Hi all, 4th grade teacher from CA
In and out tonight.
What is the of the education world?
A1) I want to check out all the sessions from presenters that I have yet to meet F2F with! Love the ignites sessions too.
Knights of make-a-lot is always awesome
what are you doing, eating a burger?
Wouldn't I be eating a taco, not a burger. That should be our first picture. https://t.co/ytF0oY6oJP
what are you doing, eating a burger?
Wouldn't it be wonderful if we truly accomplished #2 and #5 even if all of the other one's disappeared? https://t.co/NFW4pgEgy8
Hello ters! I'm Nikki from TX. Juggling chats +
Chris Tucker, assistant principal in Indiana.
yep I tolled the Chat on that one
Ahoy, Emily from NYC at Flocabulary HQ. Lurking while I watch Steph and LeBron :D
when are you getting to Denver?
I think most are part of the ' hidden curriculum' we teach through standards and outcomes.
Wondering where the focus on student choice now fits on this spectrum of careers later.
How does student choice mesh with making sure they r ready for std based tsts
For the Finals? Tough to say tbh. I like GSW and they deserve to win, but a Cavs W would make for a great story.
I think may ways. We all make choices in our jobs.
Interesting Jill. I'd like to hear a bit more.... :-) https://t.co/OEiYn7EoeR

What are other conferences that people should know about when planning for next year's trips?
I would love to take an Bus or Train through the country.
Definitely think the emphasis on soft skills is the future. Workplaces are increasingly collaborative. https://t.co/dmbjmNQbLu
FETC, Ipadpalooza, Nerdcamp are three that are on my radar https://t.co/FNlU6KZibt
What are other conferences that people should know about when planning for next year's trips?
Emily, do you work for Flocabulary? I've got two books out this year on vocab instruction. Love all related to vocab!
Not sure. I believe std-based tests differ from college/career readiness.
I think we need to integrate dispostions into our classrooms to build these skills such as allowing students choice
I really enjoyed the Title I conference in Jan. 2016. First time there. Great sessions and networking.
My Favorite Conferences are: Edcamps, I would like to try to get to someday
To an extent, yes. I'm thinking of the specific list presented earlier.
Hi! Yes, I joined the Flocab team in March. Vocab is our bread + butter, but we cover all content areas too. ^_^
I am thinking about holding again
Our Edcamp Maker wasn't as well attended as I would have liked! Maybe the next one https://t.co/XOzjgfpm1O
I am thinking about holding again
that is because nathan was running it.
Big believer in Ss voice + choice. It's great for project-based learning. But guided choice is sometimes necessary.
What determines college/career ready?
When unable to attend ed conferences due to schedules, etc, TEDtalks and twitter chats prove helpful as well :)
I recommend your vocab products to those w whom I consult!
I'd add that how skills like "prob-solv" are conceptualized/used vary by discipline, ed level, industry, etc
Depends on the circumstance. I'm not big on definitions here because they = limitations.
Oh yeah... That's a great one put on by and
Haven't been there yet!

was the my fave of 2015. #@nathan_stevens
Also, for an intensive leadership experience, attend the Cambridge Institute https://t.co/om9sOzCeR2 Tell 'em I sent you.
My Ss complained they were never taught how to balance a chkbk or do taxes.
I never balance a check book anymore.
I missed Learning Fwd this past year too. Darn. Maybe next yr.
TX now requires personal financial literacy for Ss. I love it!
Not much to either one of these anymore - w online banking and ways to sync taxes w checking account. Cool!
Does anyone still write checks? I used to teach that in a HS course for GED students!
Is there going to be a live at ?
nor I will be there this year like I have in the past
I study how diff pops (teach/curr des/HR/CEOs/govt) thinks about these issues in diff fields/regions/countries
I think personal finance would be more valuable than Algebra II to Ss. Anyone remember their Alg II
I am only in Denver for the MIE Forum on Sat & Sunday.
I do from time to time, but Ss LOVE the check writing/balance checkbook activities we do in class. 100%
well Craig and Nathan will be live from there
Hey there! Helen from Houston jumping in
I've said for a long time that Alg I and geometry are all we need in HS for life - agree!
Agree that financial literacy is crucial, particularly with avg. debt for college grads is $37,000 and growing...
Even w/o college debt. My Ss head straight to work. They need the knowledge.
It's valuable and fits within the 21st-Century skills Ss need. We cover credit scores, S loans, career earnings, etc
I had an adult lrner in my U class say do tell me I need Alg. I haven't used it in 30 yrs.
Absolutely. Beyond college tuition, it's a necessity for credit cards, mortgages, loans, etc.
Depends. I think Ss interested in certain fields need higher-level math. Ss should have the choice.
Do 4th graders really need to know the difference between fixed & variable expenses? https://t.co/kfzfZiw5yd
TX now requires personal financial literacy for Ss. I love it!
So why do we and the politicians push advanced math?
So why do we and the politicians push advanced math?
Math is present in so much of what we do. https://t.co/9d3iNTMhQZ
So why do we and the politicians push advanced math?
Why not? It's all about the way it's taught. I urge Ts to gamify personal financial literacy or make it interactive.
Perhaps not within those terms, typically it's expressed in different ways. https://t.co/764d4L8x01

But Algebra II, PreCalc and Calulus I and II? In HS? May be good for Sci & Math majors but...
Well, perhaps not for all, but which are graduation requirements?
https://t.co/qYmQuqvLnS
But Algebra II, PreCalc and Calulus I and II? In HS? May be good for Sci & Math majors but...
Because they're 10. ;) My kids loved the unit bc it was easy. But is it relevant at that age?
- would love to meet Jill if u are here. In Can in Aug & leading Brain Based Conf on Play in MN Sept https://t.co/ZaXKsCh8tt
we are. My brother currently lives there and my husband is from a little outside Rochester in a small town.
Michigan reqs. Algebra II but for many it is meaningless and a forced march.
Actually, those terms are in the state TEKS and in some textbooks. It's up to us to introduce differences
Many math faculty I know would say: To cultivate habits of thinking & problem solving used in many fields.
It is all quantitative and easy to spit out numbers to say yes there was improvement
because what exactly is advance social studies?
Agree - when learning relates to what ss live - their brains operate very differently https://t.co/otMXqc6rjA
I think personal finance would be more valuable than Algebra II to Ss. Anyone remember their Alg II
i want a wine & edcamp.....edcamp morning, wineries after lunch
It all depends. What is relevant for some Ss may not be relevant for others. Such is school, such is life.
Pls Excuse if I don't reply immediately. My is running 1 minute behind.
Any AP social studies class. I don't oppose basic history and govt classes. They need those basics.
. What's sad is that many Ss don't have that choice. There are schools that don't offer PreCalc + Cal
it is hard for a politician to describe that to someone
It seems politician think we every Ss need advanced sci and math when most don't go that route in life. Kind of like the pols.
true. What state are you in and what part of that state. We have same issue in MI.
I'm in North Texas, Dallas-Fort Worth area.
true but I teach many At Risk Ss where just basic math is diff. & now being forced Alg II
25 or so math Ts in my high school, only a few choose to be math teachers at the end of high school! https://t.co/ce0xA8qokE
Why shut doors for Ss that don't know what they want to do by not offering the choice? Just like any other course!
Do any of your districts have career centers where they teach automotive, culinary, HVAC, etc.?
. I remember loving Alegebra very much, but I didn't make a career out of it.
Ss shouldn't be forced to take Alg 2. Completely agree! Don't dis the option of offering these though.
we do. Their offering are great for my Ss. Many have jobs already because of it.
Districts in area beginning college/career pathways w/great success. Relevant to students, community collaboration.
How many would have chosen to be math Ts if they had classes that created an interest in math?
Cool - I did the same with Physics. I loved it! But my career took me in very diff direction. https://t.co/CDPgCHYCWS
. I remember loving Alegebra very much, but I didn't make a career out of it.
When you say advanced do you mean AP or any math class that is named based on its predominant functns?
LOVE! I think the collective "we" sometimes forget all the types of careers needed for the 21st Century
It is req'd in MI. That is the issue.
This is great. I think focus on college and career pathways will make more Ss successful.
We are 10 minutes from w/ host discussing Understanding Misconceptions! Join us!
. I hesitate to say nobody needs [insert subject here] because you never know what some Ss might enjoy.
We will always need the skilled trades, bakers, chefs etc.
Bravo - sounds like you make what they learn relevant to what they do. Rare - but Nice! https://t.co/OdU2S0AwRO
we do. Their offering are great for my Ss. Many have jobs already because of it.
Most did have math classes they liked, which led them to a career change. Ss in HS look at high pay ≠ Ting.
Can't say I've used algebra in 30 yrs either! My CPA says he uses reading + writing more than math.
It is wild how the rqmts vary from state to state, country to country. Forced should not be the case.
YES! I know plumbers, hairdressers, chefs, and painters who make a whole lot more money than most Ts.
Really? Totally surprises me about MI. How many credits of math do Ss need?
. Do you think math teaches critical thinking and problem-solving skills needed later in life?
Join us next week for as we discuss: Improving Student Classroom Discussions. Sunday 8:00 pm EST.
4 yrs ELA, 4 yrs Math incld Alg II, 3 yrs Sci incl Chem or Physics, 3 yrs SS.
Did that recently change? I know that my sis lives in MI, and it used to be 2 math credits. Not all Ss need 4 years!
Another great chat. The convo really developed in many ways. & I can't do it w/o you
Been that way for a few years now. At least 6.
Hope that changes Choosing a skilled trade/career doesn't mean "less than" My degrees didn't help me fix my AC today.
Join next week when she discusses Improving Student Classroom Discussions. I will be out of town.
. Thanks for sharing. The world needs more great math teachers. We live in a world where it's okay to be "bad at math."
