A1: When my kids say "sup" Mrs. Long....I have to remind them that is playground talk, not respectful talk to use with teachers. Same with conversational and academic They need to know the difference and when to use each #pln365
A1: conversational is more of the relational type to help get to know kids and where they come from. Huge relationship builder!! Academic is to help them learn the appropriate terms in each subject. Then when they combine...it’s magic!! #pln365
A1: Conversational helps drive those conversations and allow students to collaborate in the most effective ways— norms for discussion.
Academic Vocabulary help students to understand the content and reach deeper into the DOK levels.
#pln365
A1: Academic vocabulary consists of more tier 3 words, while conversational vocabulary is more tier 1 and some tier 2 words. Tier 3 words often apply to specific content areas. Both are needed to make connections to new learning.
#pln365
A1: It's an important distinction b/c Ss must understand that academic vocabulary carries the weight of deeper understanding while conversational vocabulary demonstrates an informality and perhaps (but not always) a lesser understanding. #pln365
A1:
Conversational: Words used for communicating with one another.
Academic: The specific terminology needed for a content area.
In language acquisition, Convo comes first, then academic
#pln365
A1: Conversational voc is voc used daily. Frequently used words. Academic voc is specific to a subject area and needs to taught explicitly because it can not be learned easily through conversations. #pln365
A1) Academic language involves terms specific to the academics. It could involve words for strategies, processes, specific content area, etc. These words typically are not used in everyday conversation (unless you're a teacher..haha). #pln365
A1 conversational vocab is vocab that's used in a non academic setting - used everyday with friends/family. Academic vocab is vocab that is specific to the content area you're learning #pln365
A1: Smash the two together and do a Word Sneak — Each student has a list of words to use. Some are vocab, some are just casual words and they have to use them all in a pair share discussion (as heard in this weeks episode of the #GTTribe#LikeAPirate) #pln365
A1: Conversational helps drive those conversations and allow students to collaborate in the most effective ways— norms for discussion.
Academic Vocabulary help students to understand the content and reach deeper into the DOK levels.
#pln365
A1: To learn tier 3 or academic vocab words, kids need lots of repetition, exposure, various examples, and nonexamples so the words get into long term memory. #pln365
A1 conversational is more casual, is a way to build relationships, create connections, academic is related to the content area, specific to the vocab/material/theme of the course, #pln365
A2: Real life examples and nonexamples, multiple variations of the meaning, and even looking at the derivational constancy of the word itself...latin, greek, etc. can help kids with meaning and deeper understanding. #pln365
A1: Each has a place in society but knowing when and how to use both to communicate effectively will be the key to maintaining positive and relationships. #pln365
A2 making connections between what Ss already know, their interests and the new material, provide opps for Ss to create in authentic ways, using the academic lang, better retention #pln365
A2 You have to use academic vocab often. You have to find cross curricular ways to incorporate vocab and have all teachers across the grade level do the same. It takes a lot of using and hearing the word to learn the definition of academic vocab #pln365
A2) Teach it in context; use nonlinguistic representation to teach it, & for Ss to learn it (i.e. use visuals, have Ss act it out, sketch it, etc.). Give Ss plenty of opportunities to use it. #pln365
Absolutely! That's exactly what happens when you learn a 2nd language, when you begin to use the language in context you begin to really learn. #pln365
A2: By assisting learners in finding ways to make sense of the words in their own world. Look for connective tissue that is relevant to each individual student. #pln365
A2: Introduce voc explicitly. Then students must use it several different times, in many ways. Then have students apply their knowledge using voc to ensure they know the words. Repetition w/ contextual learning is key #pln365
A2: #FlipGrid — Give students the vocabulary words. Have them make record their inferences on the vocab then they make a video using @Screencastify to smash their inferences together + the actual definitions OR using the words in sentences. #pln365
A2: Use the words in your teaching! I'm the Librarian and so I try to tie in as much classroom vocab as possible. 5th graders are doing 60 second videos on science vocabulary words right now!
#pln365
A3: MY FAVORITE — Smile!
Don’t raise your voice, even when you are angry (difficult I know).
Take each situation and make it as positive as you can. You never know what that kid had to deal with this morning. #pln365
I get to know my kids! I have 300 and I know about all of their names! I notice the hair cuts, brag on them if their teacher tells me good news, ask about sports, etc. I just get to know them! #pln365
A3 Get to know your students outside of the classroom, attend one of their games/recitals, read a book they are reading, find out what music they like or TV shows #pln365
SO difficult. This is why I keep a bottle of good smelling lotion on my desk. When I feel anxious or upset, I walk over and get some lotion! The smell/feel helps so much. #pln365
A3: Morning meetings each day help establish a family and community climate and culture within a classroom. Personal connections help others feel safe. #pln365
A2) Have fun and make connections that students enjoy. When we learned math vocabulary I would allow students to create songs to their favorite instrumentals. #PLN365
Making sure there is harmony amongst the students. Allowing and promoting collaborative assignments and discussions, sharing of their stories brings them into each others' lives and helps them build relationships with their classmates. #pln365
A3: Positive feedback goes a long way. I have started making @Screencastify’s for my students’ parents about why their kid is AMAZING. I focus only on their strengths and growths. #pln365
A3 build on what they share with you. Incorporating their jokes, stories and perspectives and building on them demonstrates that your listening and that what they think and believe matters. #pln365
A3: In a blended model where I no longer lecture I have time to have an authentic conversation with each of my high school’s students a day. Nothing builds relationships bettter than consistency, communication and care #pln365
A1 - One hundred percent. 3 P's - Passionate, patient and persistent. Love perseverance. What is a success though? Money, power, status. I'll take kindness, respect, honor and dignity. #pln365
I am in the elementary world, so Ts are with the same kids all day. Each morning kids gather in a meeting area and greet each other. Sometimes they play a team building game, or share out something from the day before, even share an emotion they are feeling. #pln365
I can say that I understand the 'never enjoyed teaching more' part! I, too, have been teaching for 25 years and everyone wants to know if I'm looking forward to retirement... I can say I'm not! I have never enjoyed education more than I do now. #pln365

You've inspired me to think
There are lots more words in my ink.
I appreciate your words and your heart
And thank you for making my heart, smart....
