A1: When my kids say "sup" Mrs. Long....I have to remind them that is playground talk, not respectful talk to use with teachers. Same with conversational and academic They need to know the difference and when to use each #pln365
  • yvetterp2 Feb 27 @ 8:37 PM EST

Bonnie here! yikes late but happy to be here #pln365
  • Latimer1Kristi Feb 27 @ 8:38 PM EST
A1: conversational is more of the relational type to help get to know kids and where they come from. Huge relationship builder!! Academic is to help them learn the appropriate terms in each subject. Then when they combine...it’s magic!! #pln365
  • Stella_Pollard Feb 27 @ 8:38 PM EST
A1: Conversational helps drive those conversations and allow students to collaborate in the most effective ways— norms for discussion. Academic Vocabulary help students to understand the content and reach deeper into the DOK levels. #pln365
  • bethhill2829 Feb 27 @ 8:38 PM EST
A1: Academic vocabulary consists of more tier 3 words, while conversational vocabulary is more tier 1 and some tier 2 words. Tier 3 words often apply to specific content areas. Both are needed to make connections to new learning. #pln365
  • PaulONeill1972 - Moderator Feb 27 @ 8:38 PM EST
Hi Stella! Hope you're doing great. #pln365
    In reply to @Stella_Pollard
  • chrisduane819 Feb 27 @ 8:38 PM EST
A1: It's an important distinction b/c Ss must understand that academic vocabulary carries the weight of deeper understanding while conversational vocabulary demonstrates an informality and perhaps (but not always) a lesser understanding. #pln365
  • JWMcMillan803 Feb 27 @ 8:39 PM EST
A1: Conversational: Words used for communicating with one another. Academic: The specific terminology needed for a content area. In language acquisition, Convo comes first, then academic #pln365
  • PaulONeill1972 - Moderator Feb 27 @ 8:39 PM EST
    Love it! #pln365

    Hey there, Yvette! #pln365
    In reply to @yvetterp2, @inspireNewRo
  • LSkae Feb 27 @ 8:39 PM EST
A1: Conversational voc is voc used daily. Frequently used words. Academic voc is specific to a subject area and needs to taught explicitly because it can not be learned easily through conversations. #pln365
  • TamiJ123 Feb 27 @ 8:39 PM EST
A1) Academic language involves terms specific to the academics. It could involve words for strategies, processes, specific content area, etc. These words typically are not used in everyday conversation (unless you're a teacher..haha). #pln365
  • Kareemfarah23 Feb 27 @ 8:39 PM EST
A1: Coversational vocabulary has character and can have a rich history. Academic vocabulary is functional, professional and efficient #pln365
  • Humph321 Feb 27 @ 8:40 PM EST
  • PaulONeill1972 - Moderator Feb 27 @ 8:40 PM EST

    In reply to @DisruptingEdu17
  • yvetterp2 Feb 27 @ 8:40 PM EST
A1 conversational vocab is vocab that's used in a non academic setting - used everyday with friends/family. Academic vocab is vocab that is specific to the content area you're learning #pln365
  • Stella_Pollard Feb 27 @ 8:40 PM EST
A1: Smash the two together and do a Word Sneak — Each student has a list of words to use. Some are vocab, some are just casual words and they have to use them all in a pair share discussion (as heard in this weeks episode of the #GTTribe #LikeAPirate) #pln365
    • Stella_Pollard Feb 27 @ 8:38 PM EST
A1: Conversational helps drive those conversations and allow students to collaborate in the most effective ways— norms for discussion. Academic Vocabulary help students to understand the content and reach deeper into the DOK levels. #pln365

  • Stella_Pollard Feb 27 @ 8:41 PM EST
Hey Paul! I am drinking coffee (plain Jane coffee- straight from the coffee pot) at nearly 9 pm… This has been my day, haha! #pln365
    In reply to @PaulONeill1972
  • D4Griffin3 Feb 27 @ 8:41 PM EST
A1) Great Question. I think part of it comes down to being able to #CodeSwitch. #PLN365
  • bethhill2829 Feb 27 @ 8:41 PM EST
A1: To learn tier 3 or academic vocab words, kids need lots of repetition, exposure, various examples, and nonexamples so the words get into long term memory. #pln365
  • Humph321 Feb 27 @ 8:42 PM EST
  • GruntledChalkie Feb 27 @ 8:42 PM EST
A1b) you see those of us on different landmass have different meanings for certain words. Academic vocab is a standard accepted meaning #pln365
  • TamiJ123 Feb 27 @ 8:42 PM EST
My sister drinks coffee until she goes to bed. #pln365
    In reply to @Stella_Pollard, @PaulONeill1972
  • Rdene915 Feb 27 @ 8:43 PM EST
A1 conversational is more casual, is a way to build relationships, create connections, academic is related to the content area, specific to the vocab/material/theme of the course, #pln365
    In reply to @Humph321
  • bethhill2829 Feb 27 @ 8:43 PM EST
A2: Real life examples and nonexamples, multiple variations of the meaning, and even looking at the derivational constancy of the word itself...latin, greek, etc. can help kids with meaning and deeper understanding. #pln365
  • PaulONeill1972 - Moderator Feb 27 @ 8:43 PM EST
A1: Each has a place in society but knowing when and how to use both to communicate effectively will be the key to maintaining positive and relationships. #pln365
  • Stella_Pollard Feb 27 @ 8:43 PM EST
Lol, I have a very high tolerance of coffee. It’s what I run on! :) #pln365
    In reply to @TamiJ123, @PaulONeill1972
  • Latimer1Kristi Feb 27 @ 8:44 PM EST
A2: by using it regularly and see how it applies to academics as well as real life...that’s the key! Don’t allow them to not use it in class. #pln365
  • Kareemfarah23 Feb 27 @ 8:44 PM EST
A2: It is all about application and personal connection. When a student applies vocabulary and understands why it matters they retain it #pln365
  • Rdene915 Feb 27 @ 8:44 PM EST
A2 making connections between what Ss already know, their interests and the new material, provide opps for Ss to create in authentic ways, using the academic lang, better retention #pln365
    In reply to @Humph321
  • Humph321 Feb 27 @ 8:44 PM EST

  • DisruptingEdu17 Feb 27 @ 8:44 PM EST
A2 I really like dual coding, more connections makes things stick #pln365
  • yvetterp2 Feb 27 @ 8:44 PM EST
A2 You have to use academic vocab often. You have to find cross curricular ways to incorporate vocab and have all teachers across the grade level do the same. It takes a lot of using and hearing the word to learn the definition of academic vocab #pln365
  • TamiJ123 Feb 27 @ 8:44 PM EST
A2) Teach it in context; use nonlinguistic representation to teach it, & for Ss to learn it (i.e. use visuals, have Ss act it out, sketch it, etc.). Give Ss plenty of opportunities to use it. #pln365
  • TamiJ123 Feb 27 @ 8:45 PM EST
Can you explain dual coding? #pln365

    In reply to @TamiJ123
  • Stella_Pollard Feb 27 @ 8:46 PM EST

    Games are essential!! #pln365
    In reply to @Stella_Pollard
  • yvetterp2 Feb 27 @ 8:47 PM EST
Absolutely! That's exactly what happens when you learn a 2nd language, when you begin to use the language in context you begin to really learn. #pln365
    In reply to @Kareemfarah23
  • chrisduane819 Feb 27 @ 8:47 PM EST
A2: To do this I ensure that Ss, for example in math, be able to write out how they did the work in words. #pln365
  • PaulONeill1972 - Moderator Feb 27 @ 8:47 PM EST
A2: By assisting learners in finding ways to make sense of the words in their own world. Look for connective tissue that is relevant to each individual student. #pln365

  • LSkae Feb 27 @ 8:48 PM EST
A2: Introduce voc explicitly. Then students must use it several different times, in many ways. Then have students apply their knowledge using voc to ensure they know the words. Repetition w/ contextual learning is key #pln365
  • Stella_Pollard Feb 27 @ 8:48 PM EST
A2: #FlipGrid — Give students the vocabulary words. Have them make record their inferences on the vocab then they make a video using @Screencastify to smash their inferences together + the actual definitions OR using the words in sentences. #pln365
  • ReadforCupcakes Feb 27 @ 8:49 PM EST
A2: Use the words in your teaching! I'm the Librarian and so I try to tie in as much classroom vocab as possible. 5th graders are doing 60 second videos on science vocabulary words right now! #pln365
  • Latimer1Kristi Feb 27 @ 8:49 PM EST

  • Stella_Pollard Feb 27 @ 8:50 PM EST
A3: MY FAVORITE — Smile! Don’t raise your voice, even when you are angry (difficult I know). Take each situation and make it as positive as you can. You never know what that kid had to deal with this morning. #pln365

    In reply to @Humph321
  • Latimer1Kristi Feb 27 @ 8:52 PM EST
An educator should never “yell” but a “mom voice” or “the look” can come in handy when needed! #pln365
    In reply to @Stella_Pollard
  • ReadforCupcakes Feb 27 @ 8:52 PM EST
A3: Pay attention to them, their moods, and talk to them! You learn a lot by asking questions! I let them know I care about them! #pln365
