Welcome to #formativechat
Please introduce yourself, tell us what you do and where you are joining us from tonight, and share one great thing you learned from the #formativesummit or another recent PD.
Finishing up the last couple webinars from #formativesummit and maybe putting in a few comments at #formativechat as well. Have enjoyed the summit so much. Thanks to you all for putting everything together @goformative.
It was awesome to have access to the great sessions and the resources provided on the site with notes and links, so helpful! #formativesummit#formativechat
Lisa Scumpieru, Digital Integration Specialist from Hagerstown, Md. I learned that Matt Miller loves Show Your Work on @goformative as much as I do if not more! #formativechat
Ben Monnett; HS Academic Dean from Kentucky! I recently joined with students in learning about Sources of Strength for student wellness! #formativechat
Hey #formativechat! David here from @goformative. I am the Head of Community Engagement and joining from Venice Beach, California!
I learned at #FormativeSummit that #SER2 is a great model for meaningful feedback . Thank you @markbarnes19 !
Q1: Where does literacy (reading, writing, listening, speaking) fit into your day? How do you ensure that these standards are met regardless of your content area?
#formativechat
Hi, everyone! I’m Iliana, a pre-service teacher (Sec Ed & Eng Lit double major) from Cambridge, MA. Thank you for having me! I’m excited to learn from you all. #formativechat
My name is Kelsey and I'm in Tennessee! I am currently working on a Masters of Arts in Teaching. I hope to teach biology, secondary education. This is my first live chat. #formativechat
A1: Now that I’m not in the classroom, all (reading, writing, listening, and speaking) are essential to my job and how I convey information to others through e-mails, professional development trainings, meetings, etc. Standards still need to be met with adults. #formativechat
Sean Olson HS math teacher, head baseball coach, chess team advisor, and leadership alliance facilitator in southern NJ. I enjoyed @DeaverDean discussing tech portfolios to showcase S learning. Actually listening to @Rdene915#FormativeSummit video right now! #formativechat
A1:The biggest standard to me: being able to apply the knowledge and ideas to directly benefit students and their learning on a daily basis. #formativechat
Hi all. Tonya from Richmond, VA. I teach Spanish prek-5 and work with student leadership. #FormativeSummit has encouraged me to flip "work before you play" on its head. I want students to not be able to tell the difference in our classroom!
#formativechat
Q1: Where does literacy (reading, writing, listening, speaking) fit into your day? How do you ensure that these standards are met regardless of your content area?
#formativechat
A1-Our teachers use blended learning. So on the students checklist or choice board this is an option or built in time for students to engage in.
#formativechat
A1: I make sure I have ss use these skills in variety of ways. Read text to learn material. Read directions. Listen to others’ ideas. Listen to me present info and classmates’ ideas. Talk to share STEM challenge strategy. Talk to get along and be social, etc. #formativechat
#formativechat A1: literacy is everywhere and belongs everywhere. Science uses peer reviewed journal articles to convey information. Making literacy in science class a MUST
A1. As a 5th grade teacher, our literacy/writing blocks take up about 90-120 minutes each day. We mix shared reading, guided reading, and writer's workshop. #formativechat
A1: Literacy is imbedded in everything we do all day, from listening and speaking at morning meeting, to sharing math work with a partner, to making letter for friends at play to learn, to hearing a nonfiction book about our animal of the week. EVERYWHERE!!! #formativechat
A1: Ticky ? for me. Are my students prvided with multiple opportunities to read, write, listen and speak? Yes. Do I teach any of the necessary skills expicitly? Not really. Do I meet with ELA so that we have a common language about the skills? Yes. #formativechat
A2: I strive to make this a part of everything from instruction to conversation with students. Helping them understand how to code switch in communication between peers, teachers, and administrators! #formativechat
Q1: Where does literacy (reading, writing, listening, speaking) fit into your day? How do you ensure that these standards are met regardless of your content area?
#formativechat
A1: I am an ELA teacher, so my content covers each of these areas. I make sure that students have opportunities to present, discuss, write and read in a variety of genre. #formativechat
Q1: Where does literacy (reading, writing, listening, speaking) fit into your day? How do you ensure that these standards are met regardless of your content area?
#formativechat
Hello everyone. Sorry I'm late but I'm having some trouble with the internet. Luis from Rhode Island. I'm an ELL teacher, tech coach, and director.
#formativechat
A1: As an HS Eng T, I'd have to say literacy pretty much dominates my day. Ss have to be able to read, write, communicate, listen, etc. in all jobs too, so no matter what they plan to do when they grow up, literacy is key! #formativechat
A1: I try to fit literacy in with informational text in other subject areas. Literacy standards can be applied to any type of reading. Using question stems with content area text and adding writing a summary in all subjects does wonders #formativechat
A1 literacy is present in very part of my day. Ss need to understand the overarching skills that make readers/writers/thinkers. Although it’s formally assessed in my literacy block the skills are addressed though out the whole day. #formativechat
A1: This has become a focus in our Algebra 1 classes. We utilize strategies like numberless word problems, capturing quantities, and I have been making sure to give Ss a space to record what they notice, wonder, or describe what they were thinking while solving. #formativechat
A1: Literacy increases with frequency & exposure. We get that...we read critically, write, make learning decisions, and produce authentic learning daily, connecting-the norm for our Ss :) #formativechat
Q1: Where does literacy (reading, writing, listening, speaking) fit into your day? How do you ensure that these standards are met regardless of your content area?
#formativechat
A1- They fit daily into my classroom. I try to incorporate all of those literacy skills into my classroom daily. Literacy skills are what drives my classroom...my content (history) provides the topics we engage with and practice those literacy skills. #FormativeChat
A1 reading and writing come in many forms. It could be coding as a means of writing. Spread your mindset to see the different ways that knowledge can be shared #formativechat
A1 - I have students start every class with a definition of a positive word of the day. We also do a question of the day. Most the time we pick a small chapter to read about a topic we are covering. Getting kids interested starts with finding their interests #formativechat
A1: Literacy is the foundation of most learning pursuits. However, must be paired with critical thinking skills. Similar to information literacy: to locate, evaluate, employ that info through our writing, reading, etc. Critical learning environments. #formativechat
A1 It should be the foundation for every aspect of learning. Without the ability to read, write, or listen many students will not intellectually develop due to a lesser understanding. Practicing literacy skills such as writing encourages creative growth.
#formativechat
A1 - Always looking for ways to access and utilize as many literacies as possible. Important Ss see this especially in math. Provide a variety of learning opportunities and ways to engage. Using the power of #edtech such as @goformative help meet these standards. #formativechat
Q1: Where does literacy (reading, writing, listening, speaking) fit into your day? How do you ensure that these standards are met regardless of your content area?
#formativechat
A1 I am currently implementing a discussion board question everyday in my math class. Students have a conceptual question they have to write about and respond to their classmates! Ss need to know writing is a crucial skill of mathematicians! #formativechat
A1 I’m ELA but it’s important they aren’t just reading the story but considering how the author crafted a message, how it applies to real life. This year we’re using those lessons to inspire our actions. Tonight’s HW: listen to how US adults chat these 48 hours #formativechat
A1: Literacy instruction is possibly the most differentiated practice we take on each day! Each of our students come from a wide variety of backgrounds in regards to exposure to literacy. We have to find a way to accommodate for those various banks of knowledge! #formativechat
A1 The four language domains are part of our daily routines. My Els are working on one or more of the domains each and every moment of class. #formativechat
A1: World language classrooms are great places to promote literacy. We read aloud in Spanish and also make connections to cultural topics by reading about them in English. Students listen to repetitive stories in Spanish and I try to get the speaking every class.
#formativechat
#formativechat absolutely. We do some type of reading or writing every class, not nec. including standards for ELA, but we do a "science in the news" across all grades/subjects in science.
A1- What aquestion!Honestly, what part of a kinder day isn't full of literacy? From the singing, talking, listening, labeling, reading, drawing, story times....Our whole day is literacy. Even in math/contents we weave in reading/writing/listening as we learn new topics #FormativeChat
Q1: Where does literacy (reading, writing, listening, speaking) fit into your day? How do you ensure that these standards are met regardless of your content area?
#formativechat
A1b - Literacy at all levels must be about the “why” is it important? Learning at some point must be driven by students. While some kids are motivated by grades, many others need to find a reason why it matters. I love to read and write what’s interesting to me. #formativechat
A1 The four language domains are part of our daily routines. My Els are working on one or more of the domains each and every moment of class. #formativechat
Interesting that of all the listed literacies in Q1, not too much curriculum devoted to listening. We may ignore this at our own peril —Ss must develop good listening skills as a lifelong opportunity. #formativechat
A1) All of us are teachers of reading! We are all responsible for infusing literacy into our subject areas in creative and meaningful ways. #formativechat
Q1: Where does literacy (reading, writing, listening, speaking) fit into your day? How do you ensure that these standards are met regardless of your content area?
#formativechat
We are all literacy teachers! We just teach those skills through our different contents. It is tough sometimes for us high schoolers to grasp that we aren't just content gate keepers! #FormativeChat
A1
I think we try too hard to make it all fit on purpose Literacy skills occur naturally everyday We ask ss to read directions we ask them to ask and answer questions both verbally and in writing we ask them to look for information and to share it with others #formativechat
A2: Reading, writing, listening, and speaking can be assessed through:
* Flipgrid
* Screen Recording on iPad or Screencastify
* GoFormative
All of these can access all four in multiple ways. #formativechat
Must make an argument that emotional intelligence should be included in the literacies since it informs much of how our Ss filter what they hear, say, write, etc. #formativechat
A2 I use a variety of tools to assess literacy. Of course @goformative is great bc I can assess all 4 domains in one formative assessment. I also use @flipgrid for oral assessment and @Newsela for reading. #formativechat
Listening is so important. We actually do different speaking activities and include listening in our rubrics and have discussion about what it means to be an engaged listener. We do coffee shop talks and speed dating to practice these skills. #FormativeChat
A2: I assess reading & writing regularly. I don't asses the other two much, and I probably should. I'd say my sophomores might not pass the listening based on our last assignment. :) #formativechat
A1: Although I do not teach yet, I see literacy as essential to any subject and it serves as the basis of our communication. In biology, reading scientific journals and applying knowledge can ensure literary goals are met for students.
#formativechat
A2 Math standards are full of vocabulary, in my class we break down what the standards are actually asking then discuss if we have accomplished what the standards are asking! Math is it’s own language, it takes a lot of practice to learn! #formativechat
A2: As we shift to a more 21st century focused assessment of students, literacy is often being assessed through student defense of learning panels. This gives educators a great look at how each of those literacy components have been acquired by students! #formativechat
I have used readers and even in other courses, I often hear students talking about not having read, the more we read, the better we write too, so I am working on more strategies #formativechat
A2: I teach a lot in stations so I can assess on the spot! Also love to see ss present their ideas to teach other. Embedded assessment is the best kind of assessment! #formativechat
So many of them are hesitant, esp if they are asked to read aloud. I promote bravery & I start the basics of reading in prek/Kindergarten. I'm going to start using Berto y sus buenas ideas with my 5th grade this year. Used to use it when I taught middle school. 💚
#formativechat
A2 - They are all combined together. I’m a big believer in directions, great work only, self assessment and reflection. Students figure out what the importance of detailed work if we model and expect it from them. #formativechat
A1: I’m a pre-service English teacher, so this dominates my whole day! Students always have the opportunity to consume and analyze literature, have meaningful discussions, and develop their writing. #formativechat
I often think about how the kindergarten model of whole child, combining all learning areas, building on the basics, and especially the #SEL could benefit all levels. #FormativeChat
A1 - I have students start every class with a definition of a positive word of the day. We also do a question of the day. Most the time we pick a small chapter to read about a topic we are covering. Getting kids interested starts with finding their interests #formativechat
A2 I include literacy standards as part of my content area rubrics for projects. I tell my ss that they are readers and writers wherever they go and make sure that I have high expectations for all subjects #formativechat
The literacy side encourages high order math learning but success is not contingent upon it. I accommodate S needs by providing more numbers and focus on the process with them to ensure those learning objectives are met first. #formativechat
A2) Reading comprehension, discussion, summary, etc. are included in most classes. Assessment of student learning is the acknowledgement of students processing understanding. It doesn't have to be formal assessment. Ts merely need to observe, listen, ... #formativechat
A2- A million different ways. Coffee shop talks, speed dating, circle discussions, @Newsela, RAFT writing, the list goes on and on. I try to always mix it up and put my students in a lot of different situations. #FormativeChat
A2) I’m an advocate of assessing literacy learning through #Makered . Hands-on learning can be tied to so many aspects of reading and writing. #formativechat
I never felt confident as a teacher assessing listening and speaking until @Fllipgrid and @GoFormative came around. Then I felt like Ss demonstrated those skills for me and I saw growth. #formativechat
Listening is so important. We actually do different speaking activities and include listening in our rubrics and have discussion about what it means to be an engaged listener. We do coffee shop talks and speed dating to practice these skills. #FormativeChat
A2. There is a big focus on Text Dependent Analysis/Questioning in my school. Encouraging the Ss to use the text to support their thinking.
I'm trying to implement more creative assessments of student reading and TDA... We created Instagram Stories last week! #formativechat
#formativechat A2-1: I use pretty detailed rubrics for writing; utilization of what I learned about good speaking skills to assess speaking, work with our academic support Ts for ways to improve reading, my own experiences as a https://t.co/LNhSnbQL0q. for writing help
A2: I assess literacy in a variety of ways--written, oral and visual. I assess through flipgrid videos, written paragraphs/essays, or a presentation. #formativechat
A2 With immediate feedback. A lot of teachers will hop on the document as the ss are working and check and pull students to their teacher station to assist as needed. The feedback has to be immediate!
#formativechat
I'm awaiting @Flipgrid to be approved at the district level. Hoping it happens. I sorely miss it and know the power that it has in promoting that student voice! #formativechat
We are loving this strategy for teaching literacy in the math classroom! Teach Ss to ask effective Q's and practice communication skills based on what they are still learning! #formativechat
A1 I am currently implementing a discussion board question everyday in my math class. Students have a conceptual question they have to write about and respond to their classmates! Ss need to know writing is a crucial skill of mathematicians! #formativechat
A2: Every encounter with language builds Ss communication, expression, creativity and growth, assess formatively by that which Ss master as they grow 😊 👍 #formativechat
A2: Assessment of these skills can include meta-cognitive practice where Ss exercise the various skills to articulate their learning narratives and exhibit evidence of mastery. Key is for Ss to choose how they are assessed in these areas. #formativechat
A2) As an English teacher, this is a great question. I am trained to assess, but I cringe at some of the assessment stories my Ss have shared regarding feedback or lessons they have learned from teachers that aren't writing teachers.
#formativechat
#formativechat A2-2: I could, have in the past, and need to do more of cross-curric work with the ELA Ts. Looking fwd to getting some great ideas to bring connections to the students
A2: In high school biology, literacy can be assessed by the reading of scientific journals and posing discussion questions based on the article for students. Also, Flipgrid can be used to accomplish this, as you can assess speaking and listening in student replies!
#formativechat
We assess literacy when students share what they have learned! A true understanding of a topic is the ability to share!
You can’t prove mastery to me unless you can write about, explain, or teach the topics covered!
#formativechat
A2: I scaffold questions across multiple cognitive domains on our math assessments. While computation skills are important, we are also assessing S ability to apply the numbers, solutions, and their critical thinking skills to real world contexts. #formativechat
A2b - we must always remember the diverse set of learners in our class. I teach Health to 10th grade students. Seeing a huge mix of kids makes it a requirement to find their likes. There isn’t a one size fits all formula for reading and writing. #formativechat
Should be an engaging assignment, especially if they evaluate how those very adults listen to each other (or else talk over each other)! #FormativeChat
A2 I assess literacy in different ways: discussion first, and if my assessment doesn’t match their belief of their literacy, their annotations, then a 1:1 chat or a test. No need for one-size-fits-all! #formativechat
Plus students need portfolio builders for college and career. Storing work in a LMS or closed system doesn’t all students to share and move forward #formativechat
A2 use open-ended questions both formally and informally reflection through @Flipgrid or Google docs online portfolio like @Seesaw meet with your ss to review goals and to ask questions use online assessments like @quizizz or @quizlet or @goformative#formativechat
I think that that is the crux of the matter. Often when we meet to work on common language and calibrating assessments we find out that we are "all doing our own thing", confusing students in the process. #formativechat
And that is why I love these tools too, students feel more comfortable and I have had students tell me they feel more confident responding using these #formativechat
Q3: Speaking is an important part of literacy development that can sometimes get overlooked when a teacher is focused on content. What are ways your students engage in academic or higher-level conversation in the classroom? How do ensure all voices are heard? #formativechat
A2: At the level I teach, I use the @actfl standards for novice language learners. I also work with the knowledge that they are kids and are going to make mistakes when they read, speak, and write. We take things very slow and we repeat again and again and...
#formativechat
A2- A million different ways. Coffee shop talks, speed dating, circle discussions, @Newsela, RAFT writing, the list goes on and on. I try to always mix it up and put my students in a lot of different situations. #FormativeChat
A3: Talk purposefully and often in the classroom, have Ss engage with each other and with content in intentional ways both formally and informally, listen and provide opportunities for Ss to talk, implement their choices 😊#formativechat
Writing, specifically, is a deeply personal experience for our Ss because we are literally assessing THEIR voice and their experience. If not done with tenderness and an awareness of its imporance, we can do more harm than good.
#formativechat
A2- A million different ways. Coffee shop talks, speed dating, circle discussions, @Newsela, RAFT writing, the list goes on and on. I try to always mix it up and put my students in a lot of different situations. #FormativeChat
Assessment must be reflective of the Ss demonstration of literacy skills, not a judgment of their abilities. The quickest way for Ss to see literacy in a negative light is to employ poorly designed assessments that Ss consider a judgment of their personal worth. #formativechat
A3: If you give the students an opportunity to "teach" something to others, they will be able to practice that formal academic language with purpose. #formativechat
A3: Socratic Smackdowns are great because every child comes to the conversations with something prepared, but it allows them each to be heard within the classroom. https://t.co/hijumasjKO#formativechat
Yes! The use of @goformative has really provided me with new opportunities to get Ss writing in math and describe their meta-cognition. All while I provide feedback and ask them more thought provoking questions during the live session. #formativechat
In reply to
@LScumpieru, @goformative, @goformative
A3- A lot of our teachers use @Flipgrid and have a 5 C's activity on their choice board or check list for students to collaborate with other students.
#formativechat
I’m nervous about their reflections. We’re reading The Book Thief and discuss stereotypes, blame, scapegoating, vilification, etc. I’m not thrilled about the connections but it will be an interesting warning & show our need to keep practicing the art of discussion! #formativechat
A3 collaborative discussions happen when ss feel valued and safe to share. We have worked on building conversations using stems and now it’s natural. This year I bought a mic to help ss learn to speak clearly and loud #formativechat
I just wrote a blog post that comes out on Wednesday. I got the idea from my brother who is a CPA and they use it to interview people now. https://t.co/aO0cOmz9Pg. #FormativeChat
A3 - Every class has at least 5-10 minutes of time allocated towards topic discussions among students. Even though many older students don’t like to speak out load, getting them comfortable and confident is a skill for life. We also use the “judge free zone!” #formativechat
A3
I work with a teacher who encourages "math talk" she will ask groups of ss to use math talk when discussing how to solve problems Many use @Flipgrid and have students explain a topic or elements of a story or to make predictions about experiments in science #formativechat
A3: I employ different tools & strategies to ensure Ss are engaged in academic or higher-level conversations & that all voices are heard such as: Think/Pair/Share, @peardeck , @flipgrid , now @gosynth , and shared/collaborative Google Slides or Docs, to name a few. #formativechat
Agreed, past couple of years having Ss present at conferences and this year for our PD, and tomorrow 2 are presenting in Pgh about PBL :) #formativechat
#formativechat A3-1: I have debates about GMO, rubrics for Ss participation, get to know Ss and partner them appropriately. I also have the upperclassman make a couple videos per year explaining complex topics for the freshman. projects were presentation is mandatory
A3: I love seeing more teachers embrace and use Socratic Seminars in their content areas. Great opportunity for students be the drivers of the discussion and really fine tune their ability to effectively communicate with others! #formativechat
Q3: Speaking is an important part of literacy development that can sometimes get overlooked when a teacher is focused on content. What are ways your students engage in academic or higher-level conversation in the classroom? How do ensure all voices are heard? #formativechat
A3: Turn and talk may be deemed as old school, but I think there is value in pausing and talking to someone next to you prior to the entire class talking about an issue or idea. #formativechat
We love this response! It's important to not only teach students content-specific language but meta-cognitive specific language as well. #formativechat
A3: We are hoping to achieve this with project based learning. Every student has a role to play, and a story to tell. Dive deep into the learning with authentic problems to solve. #formativechat
Agreed, past couple of years having Ss present at conferences and this year for our PD, and tomorrow 2 are presenting in Pgh about PBL :) #formativechat
#formativechat A3-2: Mandatory either in front of class or individually if that is not an option for the student. The student can also record themselves if it helps them. These are some great exploratory Qs about literacy
A3- I love having students state a position &defend it. In the kinder world simply justifying how they get an answer (from the text, exploration, etc.) provides so many skills! I've also had my littles tell their parents what they've learned via @Seesaw to practice #FormativeChat
Q3: Speaking is an important part of literacy development that can sometimes get overlooked when a teacher is focused on content. What are ways your students engage in academic or higher-level conversation in the classroom? How do ensure all voices are heard? #formativechat
And a great opportunity for you to discuss the need for discourse that is respectful of all viewpoints. And academic discourse is the best laboratory for your Ss to learn this skill! 😀#formativechat
I’m nervous about their reflections. We’re reading The Book Thief and discuss stereotypes, blame, scapegoating, vilification, etc. I’m not thrilled about the connections but it will be an interesting warning & show our need to keep practicing the art of discussion! #formativechat
A3: My main goal is just to get my kinders talking in front of others, teaching how to use the right speed, voice level and how to sound fluent. I do it in fun ways like morning meeting, games, closing circle and seesaw videos! #formativechat
A3: four corners, inside/outside circles, value line, sitting back to back and talking, and you have to show them what good speaking and listening looks like. #formativechat
A3: Students breaking into small groups and teaching one another as review can bring out the academic vocabulary they have learned. Think-Pair-Share also would work. Students ponder a question, share ideas with a neighbor, then the whole class.
#formativechat
Q3: Speaking is an important part of literacy development that can sometimes get overlooked when a teacher is focused on content. What are ways your students engage in academic or higher-level conversation in the classroom? How do ensure all voices are heard? #formativechat
A3 Students need to be able to verbalize what they are learning! Make videos! Use @flipgrid! Give them oppritunities to preform!
Students need to develop a strong voice! Give them low stakes oppritunities to find that voice! #formativechat
A2 I stumbled upon #Edulastic, This tool added so much more assessment ability that just true or false. It gave the teacher the ability to modify already planned assessments, during the class, if the students showed a higher understanding of the material.
#formativechat
A3 We developed the TQE method which moves from individual, to small group discussions which are curated & become the foundation for our class discussion. I can’t recommender enough & we’re getting great reflections from teachers K-College! #formativechathttps://t.co/dN3lAg269O
A3: Fishbowl & spider discussions are perfect ways for all students to be heard. In the past, I have also had a communication board where students silently respond to a question and each other. Sometimes, I would extend the activity between all of the classes. #formativechat
Something I used to do was help students build their own math "dictionaries" with examples of what they've learned and ask them to draw from it throughout the year as they learn new concepts. #formativechat
Thanks :) Someone taught me it a few years ago. They said I was appsmashing, when I presented at a conference, I had no idea. I was just mixing tools! #formativechat
In reply to
@TarniaCovooper, @timlriley, @loliveira55, @goformative, @Flipgrid, @Newsela, @gosynth
A3- I love this topic tonight! So many different ways. Presentations, crash presentations social function discussions, speed dating, coffee shop talk, 4 corners, circle discussions, degrees of discussions....the list goes on...we talk everyday in some way #FormativeChat
A3: I teach science & Ss always forget the content, but the skills remain. Providing Ss opportunities using #designthinking projects to learn & use skills in applying content is the way. It allows for authentic learning & formative assessments along the way #formativechat
A3: Many of the contexts used in our word problems have multiple ways to find the "correct" solution and some are left open-ended without having a true "solution". Ss get time to defend their answer and we encourage them to even put others' work in their own words. #formativechat
A3 - Using tools like @goformative and @Flipgrid have allowed more S voice through both using the tools but time now available to have more conversations. #formativechat
Q3: Speaking is an important part of literacy development that can sometimes get overlooked when a teacher is focused on content. What are ways your students engage in academic or higher-level conversation in the classroom? How do ensure all voices are heard? #formativechat
They are great, we have gone for 4 years to @peteandc and also local conferences as well, they have presented a lot and I love learning from them #formativechat
A3: Speaking is quite challenging for those Ss who are introverted. Must provide a welcoming space for these reserved Ss to express their opinions. Digital discussions can help here. Also, Ts must not conflate Ss who are always talking as the only Ss learning. #formativechat
A3:@flipgrid! And speed dating (I want to find a better term for it than that though.). Provide opportunities for ss to tsk to each other and to me in diff capacities to allow ss to practice speaking where they’re comfortable! #formativechat
Ss in my class are compelled (through team rewards) to work with each other to review the homework and practice skills together as well as go over assessments and prepare for re-assessment. Speaking is naturally a part of that. #formativechat
Finding that balance and providing low pressure non threatening opportunities for those introverted students to excel is key. Have to build that confidence #FormativeChat
Agreed! This is a great strategy for helping students practice reading, writing, listening, and speaking! The experiences that students have are a great source for group and individual reflection. #formativechat
A3 We do the Big Question Debate and Tell Your Intended Audience talks. Some were the beginning of big changes at our school! Love seeing students realize how much their words matter! #formativechat
A3: PBL is definitely a way to do this, I am fortunate in having that platform in my class. Along with @Flipgrid and @KaganOnline I like number talks in math @WODBMath is a great conversation starter! #formativechat
that is how I explained it to a few people over the years, I was appsmashing, blended learning and flipping my classroom, but did not know that #formativechat
In reply to
@TarniaCovooper, @timlriley, @loliveira55, @goformative, @Flipgrid, @Newsela, @gosynth
A3. When I was in the classroom, my students created a breakfast cereal & had to sell it to the rest of the class. They wrapped a cereal box in paper, designed the package, name etc. They basically had to develop an 8 minute commercial. Grades 3-6. #formativechat
Q3: Speaking is an important part of literacy development that can sometimes get overlooked when a teacher is focused on content. What are ways your students engage in academic or higher-level conversation in the classroom? How do ensure all voices are heard? #formativechat
I agree completely. SSeminar promotes students setting a speaking goal in the conversation. Asking a clarifying ?, stating an opinion, stating a point of agreement or disagreement w/rational. A student driven format to speak...everyone contributes! #FormativeChat
The first step is working to create a safe environment for everyone. I’m always reminding students to use careful language when sharing their thoughts and giving feedback. They’ve got great things cooking up there even when they’re unsure (and we want to hear it!) #formativechat
A3) Screencasting is a great way to hear everyone's voice! I'm also a HUGE fan of blogging! I also do not summatively assess student voice. They need to practice...without penalty. Nothing says SHUT UP like a marked up rubric and circled grammatical mistakes.
#FormativeChat
For us it is a weekly assignment. No ifs ands or buts. https://t.co/RwRNPtQvVq

A3 We have debates, students record @flipgrid responses to literature making connections to their own lives, sometimes I have the students respond to each other's videos, we reflect on our learning and have weekly dialogue journals (some oral and some in writing). #formativechat
