The Breakfast Club – #BFC530 – is a 15 minute, 1 question Twitter chat every weekday. We chat in 4 timezones Mon-Fri – 5:30am Eastern, Central, Mountain, and Pacific Times. The mission of BFC is to empower participants to make a difference in education by engaging in consistent reflective practice in a supportive community that inspires and challenges one another.
This crew has really made me think differently about the power of sketching in the class. I use it as a tool all the time. I teach sketchnoting. #bfc530
We use sketchnoting as one way to reflect on a book or topic. For some students it is so less intimidating than an essay and the ideas are better! #bfc530
I learned from "My Life as a Book" by Tashjian that kids like to doodle sketches of words that they had to look up in a dictionary/online that they didn't understand. This helps them to make it concrete in their minds. #bfc530
Not sure this counts as doodling, but we use drawing to notice details in books and in our own stories. I call it visual annotating and visual outlining. #BFC530
In my experience, some students map out some of their thinking through doodling...a way of processing. I have not taught sketchnoting, but I certainly see value in it. It’s another way to support learning! #bfc530
When Ss summarize their learning in their course note packs (math class) I say I want them to include a sketch (in addition to keywords and numerical/algebraic expressions).

#BFC530 A: Use doodling as segue to creativity. What stories do doodles tell? How can collaboration combine and augment doodles? What doodles make positive affirmations of learning and life?
I agree Steve! For some it helps still the body so they can open their mind to the learning at hand. Too often students are reprimanded for doodling during class. I say doodle away!
#bfc530
I love to doodle and color, gives my mind time to process and think, kids are given that same brain time when they engage in doodling and coloring! 👍😊✍️ #bfc530
Kathy, any tips when you are introducing & teaching #Sketchnoting? I'm just delving into this this yr & finding it harder than I thought it would be. #bfc530
kids draw / doodle ... it is what they do. i try to incorporate but my art kids try to make it too perfect ... ask for 5 minute doodle they want to give me an elaborate drawing that tool all night. #bfc530
It is a dream of mine to teach #sketchnotes in the media center and have it spill out into other classrooms. At this point, it hasn’t happened, other than when we talk about being brave when learning, but I will get there! #bfc530
I YouTubed some short videos and showed them. Then we used the science book. I am looking for “try” not perfection in grade 3; but there are some short videos which are cool. Hmmm..thinking I need to revisit. #bfc530
Doodling can have several purposes. Some find it useful to put things on hold whilst they think through an issue. Others it can be the start of a masterpiece. @Cornell@ecornell_online in the Creativity in Leadership Unit, would See it as initiating the creative process
#bfc530
I also tell my Ss, that I need to be able to tell their thinking from their sketchnote; if I don’t learn, then it wasn’t as successful as it should be. #bfc530
The creative second gradesters love to doodle, anywhere, everywhere and this freedom seems to bring out more creativity & sparks conversations that lend itself to great teaching&learning ~ no matter the topic 😊 #bfc530
Honest reflection: when I doodled in class as a student it was because my mind wasn't being stimulated and I was bored, right ? Is this something we should be addressing ? #bfc530
My first attempt w/ S's was having them create a sketch note based on a short (~20min) content based video they watched. This seemed to ease them into it.

We are at the elementary. The middle and high school are 4 terms. Our breaks don’t coincide with marking periods at all. #bfc530. Most of CT is next week.
Yes! I've got one Ss in particular that doodles about anything but what is being learned. Going to show her some strategies to help her retention of content. #bfc530
Love this!!
I always allowed my students to draw on their desks w/ whiteboard markers.
Often I would write them personal little notes on their desks too. They loved having a personalized note waiting for them.
#bfc530
I see doodling, sketchnoting, and visual outlining as different. Visual outlining = drawing to express your own ideas, sketchnoting = drawing to remember & organize someone else’s ideas, doodling = drawing for fun/self-stimulation. #bfc530
I actually had to defend #sketchnotes to a former admin. He thought I was being rude to the speaker. Once I explained it to him, he thought it was great. Especially when I showed him the sketch of something he talked about! #bfc530
I would say your teacher was not reaching you in a way that you wanted to listen and interact. As Ts, we absolutely should look into this and have the conversation with Ss. #bfc530
Now that is an awesome idea !!! I guess that would be hard to do in a high school where several Ss use the same desk in a day... but I could do general messages. So cool! #bfc530
It could, if I was an architect and someone would invite the job for me. Most of the schools in Israel unfortunately look like jails. There's a wall to keep people from coming in (or Ss coming out?) and bars on the windows for security. #bfc530

You could just pick a different class each day. Less work for you and more of a random surprise for the kids!
Good Morning-Thanks for always making me smile-Happy Birthday-Good luck on your game/concert-thanks for helping Sue and on and on!

ALL MY TWEETS WITH THE # ARE NOW CENSORED TWITTER HAVE FOLLOWED IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF SCUM FROM...YOU KNOW WHERE....BIG DADDY IS WATCHING US ALL. NO USE BEING HERE ON THIS TWITTER SITE ANY LONGER IF WE CAN'T SHOW THE TRUTH FROM THE DIRTY DOG/CAT EATING COUNTRIES.😬
I've always wanted a whiteboard wall! What I do now in my office is plaster giant post-it notes all over my walls. Would probably be cheaper to just install a whiteboard wall for me for all the giant post-its I use-LOL!

Good morning #bfc530 - first timer - Matt from MA - digital learning director. Doodling can be used as a visual brainstorm to creatively get ideas onto paper and then come back around to connect ideas
I do it in 3 steps, each time watching a different short video for content:
1. Title in middle of page. Just get down content. No full sentences.
2. Decide on layout before you start; columns, radial, 4 or 6 sections, etc?
3. For each written idea add an icon/sketch
#bfc530
Thank you!!! The kids do, too!! I'm so proud of them and it supports the notion that positivity, creativity & flexibility in anything, leads to great things~far& wide 😊 have a great day #BFC530

I'm creating a turning circle in our driveway.
I have to create 2more paths from the garden.
Put together the chicken watering system
Cut up the tree that fell
Collect the alpaca poo
Some much would prefer screaming hormonal 14 year olds #bfc530

I’ve started QuickDraws in class as a strategy for Ss to take 2 minutes to process the info given. About half of my Ss struggled with it the first time. #bfc530
My 3rd graders draw for their notes to demonstrate comprehension. It really helps kiddos who have difficulties w/writing, wanting correct spelling, or those can"t read their writing. #BFC530
Patients come in different sizes shapes and forms. This little guy survived a single car accident into the guard rail with only some minor cuts. Driver expected to be OK as well. Thanks @GPTXFire for caring for the K9!
