Tonight's topic is Complementary Plays, the plays we use to help our base plays be more productive, or use when the base is struggling. Tonight is also a celebration of the #TXHSFBCHAT network reaching 10K Followers!
Defensive coach here so go ahead and ignore this, but I always liked triple option out of the bone. Dive, load option and lead toss can control a game. #txhsfbchat
A1 we've got a couple base inside and outside run plays. After listening to a lot of the Run the Power podcast, I've become pro #RunThePower as much as possible #TXHSFBCHAT
A2: We use our complimentary plays as an adjustment to what the defense gives us. If LBs are flying with motion, trap and belly can be big plays for us. #TXHSFBCHAT
A2: As a defensive guy, I like to see running plays with the H back being part of confusing defenses. Power with Wham, Pop/RPOs, and Quick game on the perimeter to keep the chains moving. Mostly high percentage plays. #TXHSFBCHAT
A2) Outside Zone in Buck allows us to get the edges on teams that attmpt to take away our C gap play, and counter allows for misdirection to take place #TXHSFBCHAT
A2: Our complementary plays are used to take advantage of over defending, such as our bubble off of OZ, or using interior folds to get better angles on box players #TXHSFBCHAT
A2: We are not opposed to running the same play over and over again until the defense adjusts. Last year we had a team park everyone in B gap so we ran toss 7 plays in a row. RB ended up with 290 that game. Can't outcoach ourselves #TXHSFBCHAT
A3 If the defense tries to do this to stop our base stuff, here is what we can do to beat that. Using some sort of video game analogy can help them understand it #TXHSFBCHAT
A3) It is a weekly/daily reminder. We want them to understand the offense as well as the coaches do. We use film and walkthroughs to show them how Power opens up everything else #TXHSFBCHAT
A3) wlWe teach counter as the same play as power, all the same rules. We just use a tag to tell the G and FB they switch roles and rb counter steps. #TXHSFBCHAT
A4: We use various motions and shifts in our offense. Also looking at utilizing the sugar huddle to snap the ball before the defense has a chance to adjust #txhsfbchat
True that. I love the game of football because of this...It’s a chess match won by Jimmy’s and Joe’s who are kings, queens, rooks, bishops, knights, and pawns! They all have a place and all have value. #TXHSFBCHAT
A4: we were burned once by a team that ran tackle over (our own stuff) butt lined the tackle up as #3 receiver. Friggin now one noticed his chest said 57! 🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬 #txhsfbchat
Q5: defendingPOV we always teach tendencies and plan for plan as well as not over pursuing in efforts to not create opportunities for the offense. Just have to hope it sinks in with the kids and they respond appropriately. #txhsfbchat
A5: Our complimentary plays are a part of our base offense. We scout the opponent out and look at what plays best take advantage of what defense they will most likely run against us #TXHSFBCHAT
A5) maybe 10 minutes (two 5 minute periods per week). We will also sprinkle them in during Inside and Team for our first three practices of the new week #TXHSFBCHAT

#TXHSFBCHAT A3 Beginning with the concept of outside zone being bread and butter then how some/base, power, leads, counters & PAPs as complimentary plays require either good first steps or proper fakes so that misdirection sets up success for OLs blocks.
