Interested in student-driven classrooms? Join Dr. Nancy Sulla @nsulla (author of Students Taking Charge, Its Not What You Teach But How, Building Executive Function: The Missing Link to Student Achievement, and more) and educators from all over in #LATICchat on Thursday nights at 8pm ET. We hope to bring together a community of educators to share insights, stories, examples, pictures from their classrooms, and more. We welcome all educators to join; no need to be running a #LATIC classroom.
A1 Thought I would start the new year by revisiting the 10 principles #LATICchat and I have decided I need to revamp my facilitation grids to promote the ability of S's to build executive function skills.
A1: I'm energized to help #LATIC Ts become better facilitators as Ss engage in rich learning activities & resolve to take their individual #LATIC to the next level! #LATICchat
A1 My coteacher and I are working to find a means to work with facilitation grids effectively so that we get to all of our Ss and don't repeat/miss anyone! #LATICchat
you could carry the same grid and compare collected data or switch out grids ... one carries a content grid and one carries an exec function grid. #LATICchat
Authentic audiences are a really important factor in building engagement ... and letting Ss brainstorm problems they see in the school or community they want to tackle! #LATICchat
I just saw the link you posted for the exec function grid which I think a lot of our Ss could benefit from...definitely something to consider, thanks! #LATICchat
I have to def. give credit to @ShaneJohnsonIDE for sharing and suggesting that valuable resource with me #LATIcchat I think it will def. be helpful at identifying the specific skill sets I want S's to develop
A2 Our district has given us periodic LATI PD sessions to collaborate; we were able to work on an upcoming LA unit and draft a task/rubric! I would love to get Ps to better understand what LATI is about in 2018 #LATICchat
One of the #LATIC co-teaching models is dual-focus facilitation - each of you could have a specific grid, e.g. #executivefunction and #content then share your findings. #LATICchat
Have you sent out surveys to parents on what they would be willing to be experts on? They could experience #LATIC through being a part of the process #LATICchat
We have a co-teaching planning sheet ... https://t.co/d34ljAif3L
You might see if you could use that to create a plan for gathering data from everyone
#LATICchat
A3 Ss have loved their math game creation task and can't wait to share them with younger Ss! 2018 resolution is to continue to bring Ss back to the task/rubric on a more regular basis #LATICchat
No, not yet! We first introduced structures at BTSN with an activity list and a video Ss made describing their LATI experience the first few weeks of school #LATICchat
A3 favorite alu was designing solutions to problems facing living things. Bringing compassion to the class. Next, moving that compassion to more#LATICchat
A3 My favorite ALU has been our force and motion playground challenge. My resolution is to remember to make the ALUS fun and engaging for kids! #LATICchat
A2 My #LATICchat Collaboration resolution for 2018 would def. have to be to connect with more social studies T's who are building ALU's and continue to share and grow together A3 too hard to pick a favorite, S's prob. have their own favs- I should ask https://t.co/A6QKSxY6TV
A4 The expert board empowered some of our less confident Ss and the facilitation grid helped hold Ss accountable. In 2018 I'm looking to continue working on scheduling--we've come a long way, but have a long way to go! #LATICchat
#LATICchat A4 resolution for S empowerment is to build a better peer expert system than the one I currently have and help S's develop leadership skills. Thinking this could be done in home groups. All other structures I use (too many to list) will work well with this.
A4 Teachers have used Are you Prepared https://t.co/fHiGMsTKQk from the portal which has been awesome with all the extreme weather we have seen this year! #LATICchat
It's so empowering to Ss to schedule their time ... start with the rubric, and for each of the criteria, create a set of choice activities for Ss to learn ... works better that way ;-) #LATICchat
A4 our d squared time has students finding problems in their community and solving them. 2018 is time to simulate and advocate! Never seen kids so ready to take on the world#LATICchat #designprocess
I'm just starting my #LATICchat journey but would be happy to share my materials & discuss ideas. The process for creating self-directed learners is long & challenging, but incredibly liberating!
That's how we started! We're finding Ss perception of time is a little skewed. We're utilizing timers and now learning how to tell time which we're hoping will help :) #LATICchat
A5 Our Ss this year LOVE sharing! They're are super motivated by ALUs where they get to share the results, even if it's just sharing their stories with another class! Resolution for 2018 is to keep collaborating with colleagues to make this possible! #LATICchat
often the opportunity to schedule their own time builds a felt need to learn to tell time ... next year, include telling time in order to schedule in the priming plan #LATICchat
A5 Our Ss this year LOVE sharing! They are super motivated by ALUs where they get to share the results, even if it's just sharing their stories with another class! Resolution for 2018 is to keep collaborating with colleagues to make this possible! #LATICchat
Unfortunately I won't be able to attend; my school district is giving a different group of teachers the chance to go every year. If you're ever in Chicago, let me know! #LATICchat
GL on your #LATICchat journey, I am still a newbie myself (only a year 2.5) and growing every day. I have found that when S's are really focused on improving their scheduling and managing their own time it can be empowering for them. https://t.co/XJevqo18Tl
A6 I have 2 Ss with limited reading abilities in math. I'm using shapes to help them fill out the task management grid independently and use QR codes to have the activity list read to them. In 2018 I would love to find ways that are a bit less time-consuming #LATICchat
I'll be using the ALU I created on immigration for my HS ELLs starting next week, I'm excited! Especially considering recent comments about immigrants from particular politicians... #LATICchat
A6 using facilitation questions I was able to get a pulse on the needs of the class and have round table discussions with kids grappling with similar issues #LATICchat
Great stuff! Back to the priming plan ... now that you're running your Learner-Active, Technology-Infused Classroom you have a better idea of what #LATIC skills they need ... build them all in the priming plan. #LATICchat
Next year challenge yourself to be able to figure out what's going on inside a student's head and facilitate accordingly ... the facilitation roadmap: https://t.co/KsSYSOqROn#LATICchat
A7 Downloading digital activity lists for students to use hyperlinks to online activities/lessons. Also, Ss creating digital portfolios via @Seesaw 2018 resolution is to continue incorporating @Seesaw and other apps (app smashing!) in our activity lists/ALUs #LATICchat
A4 The expert board empowered some of our less confident Ss and the facilitation grid helped hold Ss accountable. In 2018 I'm looking to continue working on scheduling--we've come a long way, but have a long way to go! #LATICchat
