#BadgeChatK12 Archive
#BadgeChatK12 was founded in December, 2014 by a group of educators who are passionate about credentialing learning and achieving. While there are thousands of us around the globe issuing badges to learners, there was not yet a regular twitter chat for those of us in the K-12 space to gather for learning and sharing about badging. After reaching out to leaders in the field (like the good folks at Mozilla and The Badge Alliance) for their thoughts, #BadgeChatK12 was born.

Welcome to ! Let’s get to know each other. What do you teach? Where are you? Do you use badges or just curious?
Susan - Tech Integrationist Specialist at Pocahontas Area Community School in Pocahontas, IA. Some Ts use badges.
Tom from CA Virtual Acadamies - Span 1 and AP; Working to get pilot program for next year
Hi ! Santa Barbara based and digital provider around K12 here. Glad to be back!
I'm Noah in CO, passionate about credentials PreK thru Life. Excited about 2016 Badge Summit on 6/24! https://t.co/Fdm6kP0NOK
Elementary principal at Sioux Central in Sioux Rapids, IA...just curious. Tell me more.
Lots of folks already here. Looking forward to this. Question 1 on the way...
Q1: Is there a place for participation and membership Badges?
Hi Kelly from snowy Lake Tahoe. Ed Tech & Curriculum Coordinator and badge lover! I missed participating in this chat!
Examples:
Participation Badge for conference attendance
Membership Badge for being part of a club
Maybe. Have chat time each werk and award badges based on number of chats participated in and/or lang competence
A1: As long as the badges are not issued to those without any interest in earning them, yes.
A1: If it is made clear how/why the badge earner was awarded the badge, I think it could work. Needs to be transparent.
Important point! Can you say more about why this clarity is important?
a term coined by the best
Is recipient interest the only "must have" or is audience interest also consideration?
A1:In my mind that's the ideal. That badges are tranferrable to other arenas for Ts & Ss. Criteria must be transparent.
Friendly reminder to use the hashtag so everyone sees your tweets! Great convo so far, on to Question 2 momentarily
hashtag assist https://t.co/r1Yubpodzi
A1: I think that could be valuable if there are criteria that have been met by the earner & the description is part of the digital badge
The examples DO require evidence which is important. Could be great intro for people new to badging.
Q2: What would make Participation Badges (like at conferences or other events) meaningful?
If the recipient cares about the badge that is the basic core of value. If their audience cares, that's even better
A2:I think those are great intro to badges so participants can see the fun of badges & move to next level.
Good idea! https://t.co/9dnfJbJcg1
Not sure this is what you mean but what about listing badges w links on oyr CVs?
A2: Be a producer of informatiion at a conference, not just a consumer.
Great idea. How might an example of that look?
A2:misread the q-show what you learned to earn the badge. Each sesh has own badge dev by presenter w/ clear criteria.
Agree, it can be a super low barrier to entry to help folks get their feet wet:)
Release time or bonus from school after X# of PD hours to avoid using personal days. Make it a requirement for tenure
Agreed no evidence for badges is an issue for their value.
A2: I'm gathering from others' responses that baking clear criteria into Badges + attch evidence ==> meaningfulness
Certificate from pd verifying presentation alobg with paoer/ppt presented
Yes! Presenter choosing own criteria would be excellent and make conference even more meaningful.
So are you suggesting clear and meaningful rewards unlocked by the Badges?
@ SenorG If 1 contributes to the presentation/convo you are awarded a badge. Gets presenter interacting with audience too.
Can you give me some examples of how some of you are using badges in your schools or agencies now? Trying to visualize.
AND if badges were offered at all sessions it would push presenters to give participants work time to earn!
Your ideas make me think of easy ways to level Participation Badges
OK, time flying. Question 3 coming in hot...
Nice. What categories and criteria are you using?
Q3: How might Membership Badges offer a value proposition/serve as currency?
How would one earn a membership badge?
A3: They can show people the extent of your if you display a large collection.
A3: Years of membership offers discounted rates the next. Customer loyalty rewarded
so the badge I give to people who participate in the other chat I moderate would be a membership badge?
A3: I think of No Place for Hate Club and how evidence is req'd. NP4H Badge could demo awareness, share w colleges/employers
A3: Could maybe serve as a recruiting tool to get even more members.
I like the idea of showcasing the extent/value of PLNs
Hope u had a great chat! Thanks to all the chatters and the lurkers who soaked it all in! Please share a takeaway b4 leaving
Number of hours of active participation Badges earned at vsrious accumulation points.
In many states, they are looking at Teacher Leadership/Merit Pay. These badges would mean a lot more than student test scores.
which would=prof growth hrs? that's what I'd love.Sadly CA doesn't require growth hrs for tenured Ts.
This was a new concept to me as of tonight and I learned a lot in the short time I was on here. Thank you!
Great ideas to ponder - Can a badge truly motivate?
another great chat Noah! Thanks and glad I could pop in! Hope to make this more regular again.
