Good evening & welcome to for for 1/27/16! Is your teaching authentic & relevant to your Ss lives? Let's explore that tonight!
As always, and I are thrilled that such a great PLN joins us each week. New? Veteran? ALL are welcome. Power
Good evening ! I'm thrilled that my friend & ADE joins us this eve to discuss Authentic Learning in 1:1 classrooms
PLN! Time for Join NOW! Discussing Keepin' It Real: Creating Authentic Learning
Intros first! Who’s with us tonight? Where are you? What do you do? How are things going? Are you feeling authentic
Billy, 3rd grade teacher (), at Loranger Memorial School, OOB,
I'm Jonathan, a Library & Instructional Tech Specialist I co-org with & I"m President Elect of
Lurk if you wish, but don't be afraid to jump in! We use the Q1/A1, Q2/A2 format. And, of course, be sure to hashtag it up w/

Hello . Checking in for a bit. It has been a long week already. 4th & 5th grade teacher in Maine. I have been authenticated.
What's up So glad you could be here this evening. I'm currently being outbalded by you &
Nathan, put your right foot in, pull right foot out, put your right foot and shake it all about
Q1: Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. What do you see as the essential qualities of authentic/relevant learning?
for the record, i'm bald by choice, not design.
So I've got that going for me (:-)>
https://t.co/kroKtiZghu
What's up So glad you could be here this evening. I'm currently being outbalded by you &
A1: Flexible learning spaces - and real world relevance. Experiences change w/ passions & interests of your Ss.
Hello peeps. Shai, HS Math T in State College, PA. Some days I feel authentic, and others I don't. Can't stay long tonight.
Andy, Tech Director in Maine "Here, Not Here" - Nyquil night #4
someone benefits from the learning (service, gift), connections to those in field, timely-connected to right now
A1: I'll paraphrase description of work that is not done for school but for the world. That can take countless forms
Sean from Orland Park IL.
Glad to see my PLN out in full force on tonight.
Hi Nathan! Hope you are well!
A1 it does contain the phrase" Tim can sent 3 words/min on the telegraph. Dally can send 18 word/min
A1 Authentic learning is driven by the student, teachable moments, connected across content strands & outside world.
I am excellent. How about you?
Hi, I'm lurking & figuring out what is about, 5th grade from Reno 😁
Sorry to hear that you did not get hired as the coach
Thanks for joining So glad you are here. Feel free to reply to even one Q or A. But in the meantime lurk away
A1 Ss see what they are doing as unique, powerful & relevant to their "now" & to their "what should be" https://t.co/nqYXOy0SL0
Q1: Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. What do you see as the essential qualities of authentic/relevant learning?
Evening everyone! Dan from St. Louis. Business teacher ready to get started!
Welcome Feel free to jump in from lurking at any time. This is a great chat discussing all parts of 1:1 schools
a little disappointing at first, but i've moved on. i'm waiting on the women's football league
Hello Billy . Tested the S laptops and they easily access our MC server. Ready to roll
A1: It's beyond "Googling" and it involves Ss passions.
A1: Ss can see what they are learning can be applied in their daily lives outside of school.
John from Saco, ME. Hist Dept Chair and Tech Integrator. Sorry for my tardiness.
A1: one of the key factors is the authentic project. Are you just doing math, or are you solving a real problem?
There's something going around Maine.
We're going to have to put it in your permanent file.
FYI: Billy is a CRAZY AMAZING ADE Elem Teacher. We often have a MS/HS focus here & wanted his ES POV to enrich/expand our work.
A1 Authentic & relevant-making time to genuinely connect to Ss. I can't believe how many 1 to 1 conferences I can squeeze in now
A1 Ss share what they have done w/ families & go work together to extend learning b/c of excitement, engagement = empowerment.
Go ahead. There's no space left.
Q2: What is unique about classrooms driven by authentic learning experiences? What benefits do Ss expereince as result?
What defines a classroom that is NOT authentic?
Jess here.. joining in from DE.. A1. Authentic learning involves students doing the critical thinking, not just teachers.
Just change it. 1 of our Java Ss pulled up his PowerSchool grades today, changed them in the source code & printed
A2: Ss forget about the grades. Learning b/c they want to learn.
Authentic learning ignites a classroom with energy and controlled chaos. Ss helping each other along many paths to success. 4Cs!
Sorry, forgot, Rob from Dallas. 1:1 iPad 8th grade T and St. John's Episcopal School.
Did the Ss get an A for their work hacking the system? My file would need to be electronic first.
A2: Ss actually enjoy learning! Ss often contirbute to solving important community isssues. Learning goes beyond classroom walls
No reward/benefit to the work beyond the grade received.
A2: The key there is 'driven'. They're driven knowing they are solving real problems for a real audience. Not doing worksheets
Wow! What were they working on?
Is authenticity not defined by intent of T, even if tools seem old?
A2: Ss are not concerned with the grade of the assignment, rather what the finished product of the assignment is.
A2) Authentic learning is when there isn't 1 right answer. Each S explores to find own answers w/o worrying about being wrong.
A2 students are happy. They aren't asleep. They are on task
Didn't change the system, just what shows on the screen. Long enough to print a straight A+ report card.
I agree, yet Ps and Ss look for grades first and foremost!
I would say one that is totally teacher driven. Ss have no choice. Ss have no say. https://t.co/ubrBMjL0XH
What defines a classroom that is NOT authentic?
A2b: you see students applying their knowledge in various situations, showing what they learned was authentic.
a2: students like points too. it's what makes video games appealing. there's a happy medium somewhere btwn grades & authenticity
Right, tools are not the defining part of the project. Use what works, upgrade when it's more effective & more engaging
What is the better skill set: the straight A+'s or the ability to change what's on the screen?
know what the problem with digital worksheets are. You can't fold them into airplanes
A2 It's unique, when my Ss do Genius Hour Projects, PBLs-I have no script & there are certain things one can't plan for
Is T not enough of an audience?
Growth mindset always trumps fixed mindset. Straight As is just a moment in time. Nothing to build on.
you can fold an ipad. it doesn't fly very well, but you can do it.
Ideally, yes! However, not the norm most if the time.
A2. Visit a classroom with authentic learning and see student engagement, collaboration, & connections beyond a one-day lesson
Cant use my red marker on them either. How can I give feedback?
I only thought you could blend iPads
I don't know. I've seen some iPads in flight.
And to add to that, What the heck does an A really mean?
Math has right answers. Is that not authentic?
The ability to know how to change what's on the screen. Just like understanding why& how to solve the problem
what does a gold star mean? grading starts early.
Could it depend on what the right answers are used for?
and maybe a few left answers too
Q3: What type of authentic & relevant experiences would we see in your room? District? How does 1:1 support?
Mine is in flight way to often. Thank God for the Otterbox on it.
Gold star means I get to stick on my bald friends head when he's not looking
So how does solving problems in math become authentic?
You are absolutely right. We need to change that!
A3: Ss questioning their leaders.
Is the A measuring growth & real understanding or good regurgitation on the multiple choice test
LOL! I can completely see you doing that too!
Depends on the assessment.
A3 Task Tuesday Take real world problems and solve. Takes whole class period with multiple answers.
A2: You don't hear when I am I ever going to use this!
hey! *takes star off head
Or did the child play school perfectly?
A3 Example #1 When harnessed properly 1:1 can amplify the work/voices/ideas/connections...the learning! https://t.co/c7tpIEYKMP
For the record: I'm not a teacher. I'm a recuiter and a dad who's very involved in my kids education. Here to learn.
A3: Ss sharing what novel means to them, relating to characters, themes. Personalizing their experiences w/ text & one another
A1: Ss leading classroom discussions, collaborating on documents, and creating projects online.
A3 Consistent choice, Ss discussing alternatives to proposed ideas that still meet goals, presenting ideas to varied audiences
Like in sports or in headhunting?
When I think 'authentic' I think of solving how much cement I need to build a new stair Understanding Area
A2: Ss experience skills and content. They learn to think and problem solve for themselves. They ask their own questions.
I applaud your efforts. Being informed goes a long way!
A3: Working on incorporating problems that involve design thinking.
A3: solving math problems that didn't come from our book, using desmos to help us
take away the stair, isn't the learning to solve authentic?
a3: haven't seen much that 1:1 has provided our Ss in class. but their side projects are always well done & filled with passion
1:1 has allowed Ss to choose method by which to create a portfolio to demonstrate their understanding of Red Badge of Courage
Right on! Our Ss have really enjoyed GH & our independent investigations.
You came to a good spot. Lots of of educators here thinking deeply about their profession.
Agree Knowing how to solve a problem is priority 1 Transferring knowledge to real world makes it authentic
Q4: How does authentic learning drive learning in ways traditional experiences cannot?
Our math is self paced, couldn't do it without 1to1. My 6th graders are engaged for 90 minutes,
I would add-knowing how to find a problem is imperative...instead of handing issues to ss, ss investigate to find issues...
A3: 1:1 has rapidly expanded the number of expert we can draw into a conversation.
1:1 has helped Ss practice exploring new tools leading to new ways to express learning, finding voice, developing creativity.
A4) I still remember pythagorean theorem; yet still don't know when to apply it in everyday life. Not authentic.
A4 authentic learning usually turns into student driven learning. Tractional doesn't allow that
A4: Instead of testing/a worksheet about an experience, a learner actually experiences. Noun to Verb. Passive to Active.
A4 Traditional learning gives one questions. Authentic learning gives one Q that leads to many S driven Q's.
it does allow that if Ts are willing to try new ways of doing thins.
Sorry I have to sign off. Have a great night. to your students. Keep a smile on. You never know when a Ss needs it.
Just dropping in to say hi, swamped with work tonite. chat with you next week
A4b) Sad part is if I am somehow applying it (i.e. laying carpet in the basement), I don't realize it's pythagorean theorem.
A4: Authentic learning doesn't have a finish line/final/end of school year.
Allowing students to bring their own problems in to solve POWERFUL! But too scary in traditional classroom.
Totally. See it everyday as copier runs!
A4: authentic has much deeper learning. Increased DOK. Questions lead to further Qs. traditional is just Q&A, or recall.
we bought to combat printing. print jobs are down, not as much as they should be. should have dropped by half
I love seeing that picture!
When I see stacks of paper in the copy room I think, someone should tell them we have iPads, but getting better
Authentic means learning b/c it is important, not because of points
Traditional in the sense of edu serves no one/nothing except compliance.
A4: No sages on stages.
Some guides on the side.
But the most authentic leaders? Meddlers in the middle. They catalyze learning
That's what we use and it is helping. Still, certain habits are hard to break.
I dream of a day that authentic won't have to be used to describe learning as learning will be exactly as it should (authentic).
Sounds like the start towards a great deconstructed math problem
we use the term co-learners. We share the learning. It is what we are researching
Agree. Others say it's a tool and shouldn't be forced. But if you don't try the device...
4 years into 1:1 and still have Ts and some Ss that can't stop printing.
I hear you. Year 3 for us!
I see the struggle in converting to grading online when it comes to essays/papers. Still easier on paper
Q5: Moving from traditional to authentic/relevant learning requires a shift in school culture. How does 1:1 support this shift?
But it has to be an even bigger celebration when those Ts take a small step towards tech.
if I had known earlier I would have planned to join you for !
they gotta write their comments in the margins and mark up the spelling mistakes
I disagree. I take home iPad, not papers. I use my finger and can change my thoughts. To me, much easier!
Used to think that too & then I experimented w/ grading online. Gave better feedback to Ss faster.
Throw it in your calendar. You're officially invited each week 9 EST
Agreed. It was a leap when I first did it though.
A4: Authentic learning flows from essential questions - the start of good curriculum mapping & unit planning
rob, i was speaking as a teacher. i agree with you.
Easy to magnify margins! UNDO is great for T's too!
A5) I feel 1:1 is just a tool, an option for Ts. It can only support as much as Ts use it. It can also hurt. Too many variables.
Of course, but I can't go back. I love it!
Need to get away from doing it 'exactly the same way we did it before' mentality Other Ts full buyin
BOOM!
What if education was synonymous with authentic?!
https://t.co/jFBX05QwDG
I dream of a day that authentic won't have to be used to describe learning as learning will be exactly as it should (authentic).
I can't go back to a teacher led classroom. Too boring. Love the chaos of a S led class.
Definitely, but Ss are on devices and will be going forward. Can still teach skills and choice.
A5: Allows Ss to publish their work to more than just their T.
My kid has no idea what's about to hit her! And she thought Ms. Murphy was tough! Thanks for the .pdf! https://t.co/oEgXF4TpZ7
A5: ! Being connected open my eyes & made me think in a much different want. Ts need to build a PLN.
Adults harder to convince than Ss in some cases.
a5: remember booking a computer lab? 1:1 removes this barrier, but now the lab is in the classroom. Ts need to think bigger
A5: when used effectively, 1:1 can have a huge impact. Other times it can be over/under used depending on the T. All about mgmt.
A5: ! Being connected open my eyes & made me think in a much different way. Ts need to build a PLN.
Computer Labs are in the S's pockets!
Just some cases? You're being too nice.
A5b: Ss building thier PLN is powerful. Our class connects to classrooms via & kidblog.
Yup! A tool, & only a tool. But a tool like we've never seen before. Beyond flexible, but it can't do everything
i'd love to see one of my coworkers in
We are redesigning our old comp lab. Times are changing!
A5b: Ss building their PLN is powerful. Our class connects to classrooms via & kidblog.
our's turned into a makerspace, but now you have to book that. deters some Ts from venturing down.
I think that we forget that Ss can create their own too.
S's have to use the tools that they use out of the classroom IN the classroom. Literacy is know how to use that tool.
Students teaching students all day long! :)
A5: We need a paradigm shift re: standardized testing to boost authenticity. https://t.co/XmUeH46BId How are we still so stuck?!
Too many trying to fit same old projects into tech, or trying to do 'tech project' in English.
My Ss often share docs w/ each other, sit and talk, give feedback.
YES! Not to mention, Students Teaching TEACHERS all day long. My 6th Graders are 3D Print go to gurus.
Q6: Test score & authentic learning. Naysayers claim you can't have both. Is this true? How do we shift this thinking?
Imagine how big an RSU that would be. ;)
A6 Redesign the tests to reflect authentic learning. Might put peirson out of business through?
A6: Is it fair to ask you to define test? Standardized test? Time limit?
It can support a shift if Ts are properly prepped &made part of the transition VS a top down approach https://t.co/gzFBa1mOvZ
Q5: Moving from traditional to authentic/relevant learning requires a shift in school culture. How does 1:1 support this shift?
we have good leaders in our makerspace so the projects end up being well thought out.
A6: Test them on understanding. Use Authentic Learning to prove they REALLY get it. Transfer Knowledge
Standardized testing... Sorry!
We are starting with an Engineering course this year, & we have 3rd-8th graders in Lego robotics on weekends - Love it!
A6) Treat test scores like stock prices. Use them to show progress/trends and not used to measure of intelligence.
Always easier & necessary for Ts to have ownership in the process to make is successful. Give time for collaboration
A6) It's not the test that matters; it's the SCALE. Well written scales = roadmap for instruction, & authentic learning opptys.
we have sooo much substitution. sad but keeps worksheets alive
Frightening article. says schools kill creativity. Maybe they are killing kids' health.
But how do you respond to Ts who are so proud of posting PDF's to LMS?
A6: Get colleges to admit students based on their ability to solve a problem the college has.
if i knew that, i'd be a millionaire.
What big idea/change will you take back to your classroom/school from tonight’s and how will you use it?
What big idea/change will you take back to your classroom/school from tonight’s and how will you use it?
A6 authentic learning requires higher order thinking skills which result in deeper understanding which can be applied to test
That's the next step they'll have to take when they go on their 1st job interview. It won't be sitting at a desk.
Tonight is another reminder to ask myself why Ss are doing an assignment.
Thank you, for having me... Sorry I wasn't on my A-Game tonight, but it's way past my bedtime! Have a great week! :)
Then we could buy thousands of legos & hang with every day
I've taken PDF's and convert to Google Forms show how easy it is.
How about how to make college affordable to more Ss w/o diminishing services? ?
joined late!!! Be on time next week.
Looked like A-game to me.
