  • MmeBurgess - Moderator Feb 26 @ 9:04 PM EST
#TECHtalkGA Q2: Google offers tools, apps, extensions, and add-ons! Let's start with their tools. How would you define a G Suite tool to a teacher? Which is your favorite to encourage student engagement?
  • LeighaBurnham Feb 26 @ 9:04 PM EST
A1: Leigha from Kingston Elementary School; serve as media specialist; not in a Google district, but it still remains my go-to tool. Use it every. single. day. #TECHtalkGA

    In reply to @LeighaBurnham
  • CatFlippen Feb 26 @ 9:07 PM EST
#TECHtalkGA A2: Well, first, let's dig into the "what" some more: G Suite / #GoogleEDU calls their core suite of tools "Apps." Everything else is an Additional Service (YouTube is an Additional Service FWIW) https://t.co/vU2fC212iG
  • LeighaBurnham Feb 26 @ 9:07 PM EST
A2: Fav tool is probably @GoogleKeep I'm not sure I can pick just one! Oh the pressure! #TECHtalkGA

HAPPENING NOW: @MmeBurgess moderating a chat on “alphabet soup.” Follow along at #TECHtalkGA!
  • MmeBurgess - Moderator Feb 26 @ 9:08 PM EST
#TECHtalkGA A2: Honestly, I think that Forms is my fav "tool"...either that or Hangouts, LOL. I love being able to collect individual data or to connect with people on a real level with what is really happening!
  • hgsisk Feb 26 @ 9:09 PM EST
A2: I guess I would start saying they are amazing tools or apps to make your life more efficient, teaching more effective, and student work more engaging. I love Google Drawings and Slides for student engagement. #TECHtalkGA
  • JDigitalLearn Feb 26 @ 9:09 PM EST
A2: I think there’s some crossover between tools/apps. The core Google Suite is built around Docs, Sheets, Slides and Drive, with the addition of Classroom. They’re all powerful in their own way, but I think you can do so much with a Hyperdoc that I’d say Docs #1 #techtalkga
  • MmeBurgess - Moderator Feb 26 @ 9:10 PM EST
#TECHtalkGA Q3: Next, let's talk apps. How would you explain what a G Suite app is to a student or a teacher? What's your most used or recommended?
  • JustMewborn Feb 26 @ 9:10 PM EST
Google Forms is very beneficial for gathering data. We use it all of the time. #TECHtalkGA
  • LeighaBurnham Feb 26 @ 9:10 PM EST
Yea, Hangouts pretty awesome for immediate collaboration! #TECHtalkGA
    In reply to @MmeBurgess
  • MrsBayerLSMS Feb 26 @ 9:11 PM EST
A2: favorite tool for student engagement is probably Slides for collaboration or using w/ Peardeck, my favorite is Google Classroom - makes sharing tasks so much easier & I love giving feedback/engaging in conversations with students through private comments #TECHtalkGA
  • LeighaBurnham Feb 26 @ 9:12 PM EST
I love embedding Forms into websites, etc. #TECHtalkGA
    In reply to @JustMewborn
  • CatFlippen Feb 26 @ 9:12 PM EST
#TECHTalkGA A2: That being said, the best way to describe G Suite for Education in one sentence is as a flexible continually-growing cloud-based suite of programs that empowers a seamless and personalized learning environment. Also, it plays nice with other digital programs!

A1: Alli, Spanish teacher at Lambert HS. I love being able to use it anywhere and on any device! Collaboration and sharing made easy. #TECHtalkGA
  • MmeBurgess - Moderator Feb 26 @ 9:13 PM EST
Oh gosh, doesn't it make life so easy?? #TECHtalkGA
    In reply to @LeighaBurnham, @JustMewborn
  • hgsisk Feb 26 @ 9:13 PM EST
A3: I guess some of my favorite apps would be Classroom or Keep. Again the ability to collaborate is KEY in order to make the most efficient use of everyone involved time. #TECHtalkGA
  • MrsBayerLSMS Feb 26 @ 9:13 PM EST
I don't think I know the difference between Google tools & apps! #TECHtalkGA
  • LeighaBurnham Feb 26 @ 9:13 PM EST
    Me too...game changer! #TECHtalkGA
    In reply to @hgsisk, @GoogleKeep
  • JDigitalLearn Feb 26 @ 9:13 PM EST
A3: I tell my teacher to think of apps like what you’d find in your start menu on your Windows computer. Heavier duty than an extension, but not a core Google app. Can someone buy me a Jamboard so I can try that out? 🙏🏻 #TECHtalkGA
  • CatFlippen Feb 26 @ 9:14 PM EST
#TECHTalkGA A3: It's hard to recommend a blanket most used or favorite app, since it honestly depends upon the learner's / teacher's need or experience. For a newbie, I wouldn't jump right in to Arts & Culture without extolling Gmail / Calendar first, for example.
    • MmeBurgess - Moderator Feb 26 @ 9:10 PM EST
#TECHtalkGA Q3: Next, let's talk apps. How would you explain what a G Suite app is to a student or a teacher? What's your most used or recommended?
  • MmeBurgess - Moderator Feb 26 @ 9:14 PM EST
Me too! I want a Jamboard as my next Christmas present! #TECHtalkGA
    In reply to @JDigitalLearn
  • CatFlippen Feb 26 @ 9:15 PM EST
Great way to relate to what they may already be familiar with, @JDigitalLearn! #TECHTalkGA
    • JDigitalLearn Feb 26 @ 9:13 PM EST

  • MmeBurgess - Moderator Feb 26 @ 9:16 PM EST
#TECHtalkGA Q4: Now to extensions, often confused with apps & add-ons. How do you describe an extension to someone who doesn't understand? What's your favorite for students? For teachers?
  • LeighaBurnham Feb 26 @ 9:16 PM EST
I think we all ignore Calendar or take for granted. But I use it each and every day, multiple times a day. #TECHtalkGA
    In reply to @CatFlippen
  • CatFlippen Feb 26 @ 9:17 PM EST
#TECHTalkGA A3: But if I had to pick, my two would have to be Slides and Arts & Culture. I have done SO MUCH with Arts & Culture during my time in the classroom. I love what @GoogleForEdu and @gsuite offers through that program!

  • MmeBurgess - Moderator Feb 26 @ 9:17 PM EST
#TECHtalkGA A3: I describe "Apps" as similar to links to webpages...it's just another way to get to where you want to go. Maybe faster, if you don't know the address, but still just a website. Sadly, I know most of my websites, so I don't use a lot of apps. Suggestions??
    • MmeBurgess - Moderator Feb 26 @ 9:10 PM EST
#TECHtalkGA Q3: Next, let's talk apps. How would you explain what a G Suite app is to a student or a teacher? What's your most used or recommended?
  • hgsisk Feb 26 @ 9:18 PM EST
A4: I usually say that an extension "enhances" the browsing experience, or takes whatever you are doing to the next level! Love the Keep extension for bookmarking. CraftyText for displaying weblinks. #TECHtalkGA
  • MrsBayerLSMS Feb 26 @ 9:18 PM EST
A4: Is Google Read & Write an extension? If so, that's what I pick! #TECHtalkGA
  • CatFlippen Feb 26 @ 9:18 PM EST
I quite literally live by my Google Calendar. I carefully set up my settings so I get multiple notifications in a variety of ways and I receive a summary every morning at 5:00 AM of what I have on the docket. And the new gCal design is phenomenal! #TECHtalkGA
    In reply to @LeighaBurnham
  • JDigitalLearn Feb 26 @ 9:18 PM EST
A4: think of an extension as things that live in your Windows taskbar. Always there, always available. Recently I’ve been loving Beanote, which is the first really effective web page highlighting and notating tool I’ve found. Also Google Cast 4 Education is a lifesavr #techtalkga
  • JustMewborn Feb 26 @ 9:19 PM EST
A4: I described this today as ways to customize your Google experience to fit your needs. This was my Techie Tuesday topic for today. #TECHtalkGA
  • MmeBurgess - Moderator Feb 26 @ 9:19 PM EST
And THAT is the whole point behind tonight's conversation! After a 15 email exchange conversation, I realized that MANY people don't know the difference! #TECHtalkGA

My Digital Portfolios page https://t.co/4E2DXaJhhB For our learning purpose: Portfolios are a story of a student’s educational life. They can be used to demonstrate and reflect on the growth and attainment of knowledge and skills over time. #TECHtalkGA
  • MrsBayerLSMS Feb 26 @ 9:20 PM EST
A4b: I haven't used many extensions yet but like the idea of Checkmark #TECHtalkGA
  • MmeBurgess - Moderator Feb 26 @ 9:21 PM EST
    Yes! It's a great one, too! #TECHtalkGA
    In reply to @MrsBayerLSMS
  • allisonkcochran Feb 26 @ 9:21 PM EST
A2: Forms=fantastic, LOVE the data results...but i definitely use Docs and Slides more on a daily basis in class. I like the creative elements for Ss with those. #TECHtalkGA
  • LeighaBurnham Feb 26 @ 9:21 PM EST
A4: I use a lot of add-ons but at this point, I'm not sure I use any extensions! I may need to brush up. #TECHtalkGA
  • edtechteach3 Feb 26 @ 9:22 PM EST
A4: Extens: the great suspender, GIPHY for chrome, GIPHY for Gmail, honey, Gsuite training. The last one helps with my LMGTSFU workflow. I guide users here first. #TECHtalkGA
  • LeighaBurnham Feb 26 @ 9:22 PM EST
Ooo...two new things I need to try!!! #TECHtalkGA
    In reply to @JDigitalLearn
  • MrsBayerLSMS Feb 26 @ 9:23 PM EST
I used Paletti today and had to stop and think to myself - "is this an extension or an add-on?" #TECHtalkGA
    In reply to @MmeBurgess
  • MmeBurgess - Moderator Feb 26 @ 9:24 PM EST
#TECHtalkGA Q5: Finally, last question: add-ons! Now that add-ons are available for all of the core tools, what's your go-to definition to set them apart from apps or extensions? Pick a tool and give us your 3 favorite add-ons!
  • MmeBurgess - Moderator Feb 26 @ 9:24 PM EST
And look out soon for new updates coming from @crafty184! I'm a HUGE fan of all of his extensions! #TECHtalkGA
    In reply to @MrsBayerLSMS, @crafty184
  • LeighaBurnham Feb 26 @ 9:24 PM EST
    Absolutely much improved #TECHtalkGA
    In reply to @MmeBurgess, @CatFlippen
  • CatFlippen Feb 26 @ 9:24 PM EST
There are a few of those that cross both worlds and function as an extension AND an app / add-on. Perhaps @GoogleForEdu / @gsuite needs to work on the terminology a little! #TECHTalkGA
    In reply to @MrsBayerLSMS, @MmeBurgess, @GoogleForEdu, @gsuite
  • LeighaBurnham Feb 26 @ 9:25 PM EST
Getting it! See...this is what happens when you aren't in a Google district. Painful. #TECHtalkGA
    In reply to @JDigitalLearn
  • JustMewborn Feb 26 @ 9:25 PM EST
A3: Great response! I think of Classroom really as the ultimate. This is where I think a lot of teachers need to start #techtalkga
  • JDigitalLearn Feb 26 @ 9:26 PM EST
A5: addons only work within Google Apps. The @PearDeck add-on is amazing. Advanced Form Notifications is a must. Also - love Doctopus for managing big doc rollouts outside of Classroom. #techtalkga
  • LeighaBurnham Feb 26 @ 9:26 PM EST
    I think I need a terminology course myself! #TECHtalkGA
    In reply to @CatFlippen, @MrsBayerLSMS, @MmeBurgess, @GoogleForEdu, @gsuite
  • MrsBayerLSMS Feb 26 @ 9:27 PM EST
Classroom is a game changer! I remember having kids share things with me before Classroom and searching my Shared with Me forever to find things. #TECHtalkGA
    In reply to @JustMewborn
  • CatFlippen Feb 26 @ 9:27 PM EST
Of course @JDigitalLearn goes into Geeky G Suite land where I was trying not to go! Don't get my started on Google Sheets, people. #TECHTalkGA

  • CatFlippen Feb 26 @ 9:29 PM EST
We are blowing up our system currently with @PearDeck. It has been phenomenal in a multitude of learning environments and structures! So very useful. #TECHtalkGA
    In reply to @JDigitalLearn, @PearDeck, @PearDeck
  • hgsisk Feb 26 @ 9:29 PM EST
A5: I usually explain that Add-ons work inside/alongside the G Suite tool to take that tool to the next level. I love @PearDeck new add-on inside Slides. Also Icons by Noun Project and Unsplash. #TECHtalkGA
  • LeighaBurnham Feb 26 @ 9:29 PM EST
If we get @CatFlippen started on Sheets we could be here awhile! She rocks them!!! #TECHtalkGA
    In reply to @CatFlippen, @JDigitalLearn, @CatFlippen
  • MmeBurgess - Moderator Feb 26 @ 9:29 PM EST
#TECHtalkGA A5: Oh wow, so many! I use Forms so much that my favorite add-ons probably come from there... Certify 'Em, Advance Summary by Awesome Table, and Choice Eliminator are some of my faves!
  • MrsBayerLSMS Feb 26 @ 9:29 PM EST
A5: I know this one! (I think!) Add-ons work only within that app. I love Pear Deck and Paletti in Slides! #TECHtalkGA
  • MmeBurgess - Moderator Feb 26 @ 9:29 PM EST
Right?? It can be so confusing!! #TECHtalkGA
    In reply to @LeighaBurnham, @CatFlippen, @MrsBayerLSMS, @GoogleForEdu, @gsuite
  • JustMewborn Feb 26 @ 9:30 PM EST
A6: Orange Slice, Read and Write, and Grammarly are my go to add ons. I would describe these as extra features for your core components of the Google Suite. #TECHtalkGA
  • MmeBurgess - Moderator Feb 26 @ 9:31 PM EST

Or maybe I should have said that add-ons work only within that tool? #TECHtalkGA
  • JDigitalLearn Feb 26 @ 9:31 PM EST
A5: and JAG Tables! It makes me look like a PHP whiz on my website when I don’t really code worth anything. #techtalkga
  • JustMewborn Feb 26 @ 9:31 PM EST
PearDeck is up next for me. I keep hearing about everyone using it. Guess I've got to get on board #techtalkga

You can do it!!! It reads like this: "Do a combine query of each of these other queries from three tabs and then pick ALL columns from each row where the 1st column is not blank and order the result of all the above alphabetically A-Z by Column 2." There you go! #TECHtalkGA
