Happy Tuesday ! The word Innovation gets thrown around a lot today. What does it mean to you and how do we raise young innovators?
no coffee today. But I bought this hyper caffeinated tea. Trying it out.
good morning and safe travels!
Good morning Christina... am doing well. Waiting for the sun to rise.
I'm glad I have a planning day today - no sugary Ss for me today 👍
Good Morning everyone! Per our chat yesterday I was told that $50 is pricey for a live video from Donalyn miller. ugh
Thanks! I needed that reminder this morning!
perfect pic, Eric. Opportunity is essential to innovation.
Soem twitter magic happening here ->
Planning day today?! smartest move ever.
We have to start with critical thinking. Students need to be given time to consider and solve problems in all contents.
It's the morning after Halloween! I hope we can survive and thrive with sugar crazy, sleep-deprived kids!
I am not sure I know who you are anymore...
Lol
I hope it works!
Good morning Veronica... sometimes slow is good, eh?
Good morning to all my fam! Hope your Halloween was filled with treats and not a tricks!
Rabbit rabbit . Stacey from NJ.
Someone was thinking when they made the calendar!!
Innovation = compassion. If you care, you change what you do & how you do it
Good morning, I have a house full of exhausted trick or treaters.
oh yes! Fortunately, bed time still happened and only 20 minutes later than usual.
Yeah. its that time of year.
Slow and steady..... Great breakfast pic today.
Good morning! Tuesday never gets the proper respect, and today it will be formidable!
Thanks Eric... opportunity is a good companion.
Innovation is birthed by imagination. Are we both modeling that in our classrooms & allowing time for students to be imaginative
Did not think of it that way before, but so very true! https://t.co/C2gz71zivI
Innovation = compassion. If you care, you change what you do & how you do it
Innovation comes from free thought, creativity, and space to be , Students need to be free of categories to innovate.
It is a perfect picture!!
They're in charge of the Twitterverse today ->
My Risk-Taking and Innovation page https://t.co/Tplqoauafu New ideas come about as a result of risk taking. Allow them!
To me involves questioning why and how things are done; what do we have to change that, especially for
Absolutely, Robin. S-choice is key ingredient to innovation.
Innovating means identifying and solving problems through creating and continually improving solutions focused on user needs
. Innovation means exploration and creation. Something new. I think we do this by providing open ended tasks/opportunities to learn.
She's -> the GOOD in good morning.
Freedom of choice coupled with proper perspective on failure. We all need to embrace it in innovation process.
Innovation is the ability to think & create without restrictions in a supportive environment.
I cannot put a label on innovation. To me, it is just using the resources available to the best we can.
Good morning everyone!!!!!!
Innovation is resourcefulness -with a sexier name. Problem solving, connecting, not add-ons or tech for tech's sake.
it's a wired world... fueled by sugar!
Good morning friends. Steve from NJ here. How's everyone?
Great question today (as always) https://t.co/e0CSqI8U1P
Happy Tuesday ! The word Innovation gets thrown around a lot today. What does it mean to you and how do we raise young innovators?
Innovation=minds on fire. Creativity, passion, curriosity.... Thinking as if the possibilities are limitless.
Innovation means that there doesn't have to be a script. Freedom to explore and create. Definitely have to teach kids how though.
If we want our students to innovate, we need to encourage Ts to be innovative - difficult when performance tied to random number
We need to encourage children to be creative and comfortable with the notion of "fail forward."
I think its more about how we present information to kids. a much shorter leap than most assume.
choice is important, but remember that it's not all about the innovator but about those being helped
Innovation is driven by necessity but encouraged by the freedom of exploration and desire to make it better
Yes! Forcing Ss to do 1-size-fits-all, compliance-based activities where WE do all the thinking, we stifle innovation.
We also have to remember, innovation isnt just doing it differently, it has to be more effective, easier, etc. or its not helpful
Srudents become innovators when they see there is an audience that validates them and their effort to innovate
Kathy I didn't recognize you - live the new picture!!! How's everything going there? Hubby okay?
Happy November !
Brian, HS principal from Mass.
Innovation is thinking and doing outside the box. As Ts we need to model it for Ss and provides multiple opportunities for practice.
Heading to a mtg today to talk about where our Bd is headed with tech. Many ideas to share and hoping for inspiration too.
I get that this is a small part of it. But seeing teachers innovate would also help spur this on.
Why do ppl innovate? Out a need? A goal? A challenge? Whatever its definitely a and attitude.
Our modified NANoWriMo challenge begins today! I committed 500 words, a 5th grader 750. Lots of writing to do this month!
So very true! https://t.co/2bIjGrXFRG
If we want our students to innovate, we need to encourage Ts to be innovative - difficult when performance tied to random number
I think we teach innovation by offering a goal, but letting the Ss figure out how to get there. The getting there is the innovation
We need the willingness to fight for change; has changed the lives of students; someone fought for that
Does this mean your school/dept won't foot that bill for PD?
Innovation: 'creating the new'...choice, teachers follow Ss' lead, play opportunities, welcoming S voice, providing time.
I don't know. They have to "preview" it first! Very disappointing.
I proudly stand with Eric...
Hi Steve! Hope you're great!
I'm so glad to hear that. I've been thinking of you. https://t.co/rAYet5Uydx
Everything is great with him! He is loving life. I love him being home! :)
Yes. We provide the what and the when. Kids provide the how.
Good morning from VA my friend! How is the year going?
Innovation = risk-taking.
How do we raise young innovators? By modeling and proclaiming our passions!
Spot on! Key is a safe space where Ss have the freedom & support to create, fail, learn, redo, grow, etc.
and how are you my friend. text or message me.
Innovation can only happen in an authentic community of learners who support e/o through the process https://t.co/6zq0pe6Uq0
Innovation is the ability to think & create without restrictions in a supportive environment.
I could pay it, but I get a lot here. It is just the point of the whole thing.
Morning Steve! What were you and the girls for Halloween?
Students who don"t see themselves as free smother their creativity and confidence that allows innovation to show itself. schoo
Yes! That means I have to constantly move myself into the uncomfortable & learn along side the Ss.
That's how I got my book written - committed to at least 500 words a day! Some days I averaged 1,000 https://t.co/IWCCOYIFsJ
Our modified NANoWriMo challenge begins today! I committed 500 words, a 5th grader 750. Lots of writing to do this month!
Well...after a night of Halloween festivities, going to be a challenge to bring the A game today https://t.co/ZMoKUspVP0
Good Morning . How we doing today?
And its not a thing that can just be created. It must be fostered.
something about tea that always seems to equate to relaxation, though :)
What is nano? I am intrigued.
Yes. It is the principle. Give us what we need when it's that affordable.
love this answer, agree with you
Teacher's modeling innovation is super important. So many of us are tied to standards and tests :(
Our Makerspaces workshop for today was cancelled because not enough school librarians signed up
right now reading Learning to Choose, Choosing to Learn & it's all about this!
how ironic we just talked about that. $50? You aren't worth a $50 investment? That's wrong. https://t.co/cToml3e2ay
Good Morning everyone! Per our chat yesterday I was told that $50 is pricey for a live video from Donalyn miller. ugh
Apparantly $50 is not affordable.
Same here. About to get worse- I will DM you with latest news. https://t.co/7mOeZV8o7L
and how are you my friend. text or message me.
I want my Ss to think outside the bubble when innovating! Looking for multiple solutions to a problem
innovation comes when a need meets with someone's passion and they create a solution to that need
NaNoWriMo - national novel writing month. Let me find a link!
It is my job to help clear the way from innovation
I will look forward to hearing from you.
Right?! and the paperwork is just not worth it.
to me, innovation is about creating an environment that encourages passion driven learning - innovation comes from inspiration
There is a student version. https://t.co/IBm9VPR9j5
I'm running a lunchtime Nano club. Hope I get a few writers. Used to fold it into class time...not supported anymor… https://t.co/QC3RSnrO5M
Our modified NANoWriMo challenge begins today! I committed 500 words, a 5th grader 750. Lots of writing to do this month!
It's so dark out and cold out I just want to go back to sleep
Gotta run - hungry dogs staring at me right now. Happy Tuesday!
yes we need to talk the talk and walk the walk https://t.co/UZXppbUhvM
Teacher's modeling innovation is super important. So many of us are tied to standards and tests :(
I completely agree, sometimes letting go and seeing where a good idea can lead brings about amazing results https://t.co/fvKuXIkx7f
Innovation: 'creating the new'...choice, teachers follow Ss' lead, play opportunities, welcoming S voice, providing time.
My bad, we were in Maryland. It was great. Beautiful weather!
It is much more time consuming and less measurable than teaching Ss to pass a test.
you are right, try something new, if you fail try again or try something differentbut at least you are trying, learning
that statement is how teachers say no to innovating. If you believe this is truly valuable-trust it
I keep thinking of the book Disrupting Class: it's not substituting something, it's creating something that doesn't already exist.
Sure! Attempting somthng completely different, untried before, discomfort & awkwardness factor largely into process
Ss need guidance too. We need to help steer the learning and not just run with the bulls. Goals and success criteria!
data needs to inform our choices as instructors & stewards of learning, not "drive" instruction
Does annoying have a good rubric to measure innovation?
that's sad. Kids love a good challenge! Good luck to you all! (what's not to support, I wonder? Literacy? Lol)
Ha! Ok, when you do come to VA we should try and meet up!
Innovation in students is where the online ed community is headed. Once we get our bearings I think this all gets passed on to kids.
was a cat in school, but later she was I was :) Cathy wore a funky spider fascinator
Innovation = something new. Therefore, can't tell Ss to do same old thing. Give Ss rubric, allow choice , have time limit. Amazing!
Teachers need to encourage risk, and embrace innovative thinking, no matter how outrageous. Remove the fear!
Innovation is creativity applied. Raise innovation as Edison did -- try, try, try; believe there i… https://t.co/Dw03QQ4hLI
Reason to ask yourself each day...is this an innovation catalyst or deterrent. Err to the former!
I'd love to see this video...can you send the link for ordering?
Off to a great start thanks to Can't believe quarterlies start today. Have a great one, Friends!
Innovation is learning from exp of others, then using knowledge to create new. Ss need balance of trad edu and freedom to create
dressed as her Cheer coach for practice on Sunday :)
I think Ts could gift admin w/ books like this holiday season
Thanks Mark, always honored
great, will be checking it out. Thanks for sharing
Love it! Love Leila's costume change!
I agree that we, as teachers, have an important role to play as we inspire, encourage and support 'greatness'!
I am so much more comfortable saying "this is what works for my ." You have to be willing to for what is right.
Im very interested in Genius Hour. Not sure how best to structure, begin. Thoughts? Tips? Pep talks?
To increase innovation in students is to release some of the control in your classroom. Can you do that?
Does anyone have a good rubric to measure innovation?
Take the"risk"label off of innovating-it scares people off.Is it risky to seek avenues for success?Or to continue doing nothing
Might literally steal this idea! https://t.co/yIe4PxF7we
I think Ts could gift admin w/ books like this holiday season
I love . I have videos..dm me your email and I will send you what I have. Grade?
Yes! My job is to know each S well enough to align/support custom projects that match the passion & need.
"Time consuming and less measurable" can be so freeing sometimes!
welcoming S voice, very important and meaningful for Ss
Thanks for the worss of wisdom . Have a terrific Tuesday!
Have a great Tuesday everyone! Model your innovative side today!

what grade level? Have you checked out the work of
So many great possibilities here! Thank you!!
that means not everything we do is for a grade! Coaches have players practice much more than time played in big games
5th grade in a middle school with middle school schedule. Thinking 1 class period out of a double block each week.
Innovation is about a mindset, a culture. Schools & classrooms need to embrace an innovative mindset to allow others to explore
I'm taking this statement into my next School Improvement team meeting. https://t.co/FecocE60WD
data needs to inform our choices as instructors & stewards of learning, not "drive" instruction
Right?! That is what I thought! I honestly didn't think there would be a problem. Ugh!
Growth mindset in action...and at its best! Right on!
...and it gets measurable results-only in a much more powerful and lasting way that traditional test prep.
Have a great Tuesday everyone!

I agree. As leaders, we need to create a culture where teachers can innovate: Ts need to be able to organize their ideas

Commitment to community takes time to build, but so essential, as you have said so well!
I can usually see it in them as they walk into school! Gonna be a fun day! https://t.co/U2zrYamd8c
Happy Tuesday . Remember to ask your Ss who had candy for breakfast.
I ask them who brought me candy for breakfast
PD is not an expense. It's an investment. Especially teacher selected PD!
Great thoughts to start the day. Now to grab a candy bar for breakfast and off to work
Truly transformative learning!
Have a wonderful day I get to miss all the sugared-up kiddos today by going to a workshop. Yes, it was just a coincidence!
don't just think about how much $ it is -- think about how much time it'll save Ts in the future

Sometimes disrupts my plans...but that's good!

I'd love to have a discussion about assessment around this topic!
Sometimes rubrics are required by the district 4certain initiatives. I was just asking bc I know our PLN has good stuff!
Amen to that! It's deep learning that spans a lifetime.
All of the above! Though these days not eating sugar.

I hope they will say something about inspiring,&challenging them but also about integrity, &helping them find their authentic voice
I eased into genius hour by starting in letting Ss chose contests to enter - essay, art, video, etc

Joining late- sorry! People innovate because they care, are confident risk-takers & are determined to make meaningful change
