#FLedchat is a virtual meeting place using Twitter. Educators across the state of Florida come together on Wednesdays at 8pm EST to discuss the topics of the week.
Hi, everyone! I’m Michelle, Media Specialist from TN and I’ll be moderating tonight. One FOOD (that’s what the pic should have said) that I can’t go a week without eating is avocado. I actually can’t go more than two days without it in or on something! #FLedChat
Cody Charles from central Iowa--HS math teacher. I'll be joining #FLedchat for the first time tonight, but an experienced Twitter chatter. Hope you accept those up north!
A1: You know, I tried a coding conceptual activity in my ELA classroom once. It was to reinforce something we were reading. It was problem solving. It was a bit of thinking critically. That has a place everywhere. #FLEdChat

A1: Simple coding can start early. Elementary grades. Logic processes in middle grades or sooner. So many acknowledge regarding math, ok kids won’t actually use this but the thinking process is important. That’s more true with coding plus potential for direct use! #fledchat
A1b: I realize that not every student needs coding/programming. I am aware that @EducationFL has required that CS be offered at every secondary school. (Unfunded Mandate) #FLedChat
While I don’t think every kid will love coding, I do think they can all benefit from the computational thinking and problem solving involved. Any place you can make it work, well, that’s awesome. #FLedChat
This may be unpopular, but I do not think the world will end if every kid does not learn to code. Coders gonna code ... give kids the opportunity to explore coding, but to require it may be counter productive. #FLedchat
A2: Naturally a pro is that feedback is timely with opportunities to respond to it. A con might be...hmmm.....maybe a lot of screen time, never a break.. #FLEdChat
A2: The digital world has sacrificed face to face communication-still a skill that ALL of us need to possess. With that said, immediate information (feedback) expedites processes that once took much longer. #FLedchat
I agree with you completely. I think it's good that we have to offer it. Every student has his/her own passions. I just want them to give it a try. #FLedChat
A2/A. This makes me think of my doctor. When the health insurance company told him that he needed to enter each patient’s info on a laptop during their exams he said no. He didn’t want to lose the personal contact during visits. #FLedChat
first hand thought ... this year I took over the Fabrication Lab ... first project "Build a box that can open and close without a hinge" ... kids could design on computer ... create tool path... cut on @ShopBotTools ... spent days actually assembling it. #FLedchat
A2/B. I worry that teachers will get so wrapped up in typing feedback during class that they will miss out on building and maintaining great relationships with their kids. #FLedChat
I think every kids should get an honest experience in coding. Hour of code ... something that may get them interested into it ... able to make an informed decision #fledchat
A2b: I don't provide immediate feedback on everything. Students also need to learn how to do their own proof-reading and error checking. I'm not going to be a helicopter teacher. #FLedChat
I might now be just (slightly) biased in saying this now with @BrightBytes but I can't see how real time feedback in the form of #data is not a pro and a positive in the field of #education in 2018 #Fledchat
I just wish Hour of Code looked more like programming. I get that the blocky coding helps students, but when they try to transition to my class it can be difficult. Like going from making sandwiches to cooking gourmet meal. #FLedchat

I was thinking more of automated feedback...like online multiple choice quizzes, etc. So funny how we can all have different ideas of what something means. #FLedChat
A2/B. I worry that teachers will get so wrapped up in typing feedback during class that they will miss out on building and maintaining great relationships with their kids. #FLedChat
A3: I have one of the @nearpod VR headsets and one thing I'm planning to do is engage students in storytelling using VR..writing even..."go there" and tell me about your experience. #FLEdChat
I agree. But in most places that transition doesn't exist. Elementary schools may only do the Hour of Code one week out of the year as an "extra". Wish more did Computational Thinking activities throughout the year.
#FLedChat
A3: We have had a lot of success with VR in our district! Across all grade levels Ss were super excited to use the headsets and explore new places. #FLedChat
You're so right. When my students code an HTML page, they get immediate feedback for themselves when they open it in a browser. That is only available through tech. #FLedchat
A3: Tech opens the door to opportunities that we may have never had. For example, in a math class, instead of focusing on the computation to a complex math problem, we can expedite the computation and focus on HOW that computation allows us to answer a REAL question #FLedchat
A3b: One challenge is with the management of the devices. Rather than checking them out for a "special" lesson, I would like to see them used regularly to provide background knowledge for topics and standards. #FLedChat
A3: We have had a lot of success with VR in our district! Across all grade levels Ss were super excited to use the headsets and explore new places. #FLedChat
A3b: Since so many AR/VR companies are starting to open their developers kits (programming), students can now start to create their own environments. This is going to get very creative. #FLedChat
A3. I want to have a solid pedagogical reason for using AR/VR in the Media Center. That being said, both are really engaging ways to show kids things that you normally couldn’t. When Google Expeditions came to my school, 5th graders were able to explore the moon. #FLedChat
A3b: Since so many AR/VR companies are starting to open their developers kits (programming), students can now start to create their own environments. This is going to get very creative. #FLedChat
I teach the skill of visualization in reading and writing. How awesome it would be for them to take a trip in VR and then reinforce their experience with writing. #FLEdChat
Too true. When I had iPads, I regularly worked with @ScratchJr with my littles. I've installed it on my school's iPads (classroom). Hopefully, we can do a lot of this. #FLedChat
A4: We should always be asking our students WHY they are using a particular site. They have to learn how to determine if a site is fact or opinion. It is a daily activity. #FLedChat
A4: The idea of evaluating the credibility of sources/information. Def falls into ELA. It's one of the seven Gifted Goals in FL too for being able to evaluate significance of research/data/info. or evaluating a quote like we do every day in #PowerofQuotes discussions. #FLEdChat
A4. As a Media Specialist, I teach kids to look below the surface of resources when they do research. But it’s hard to do it when you only see kids once a week. More definitely needs to be done in this area—and then maybe they can teach their parents. #FLedChat
A4b: Just because you can find an answer in the first page you "google" doesn't mean its the best answer. We have to encourage students to dig deeper. We also have to dig deeper ourselves and not just read the headlines. #FLedChat
A4: Embed student expectations for copyright/fair use into project rubrics. For essays and projects add a reflection where students evaluate their sources. #fledchat
A5: I think it's always good to show students the positive side of things. Students need to see that their online activity can make changes, that they have a voice and it can be heard. #FLedChat
Students should learn to be critical of all content. Encourage them to question what they're learning and the motivation of the people behind it. #FlEdChat A4
A5: Social media is a tool, and it’s too bad that it’s become known as a place for nasty vitriol that most people wouldn’t spew face-to-face. That said, it can also be a force for good, and I like the idea of our students being empowered to use it as such. #fledchat
A6: I think there are some really promising things happening regarding the use of predictive analytics to improve student outcomes https://t.co/sFel3I1ZfR#fledchat
