Meet and chat with colleagues about Universal Design for Learning (UDL) on Twitter! The best hour of professional learning you'll get in 30 minutes. Held the first and third Wednesdays of the month from 9-9:30PM ET.
#UDLchat starts RIGHT NOW! Don't forget to put the hashtag in your tweets, and follow our #UDLchat protocol: Moderators start questions with Q1, Q2, Q3... Participants start answers with A1, A2, A3... Annnnnnnd chat!
Welcome to #UDLChat! Please introduce yourself and tell us what you are looking forward to over the holiday season! I'm one of your co-hosts and I am excited to be with my children over the holiday!
A1 I like to teach Ss about the uses and limitations of learning style inventories. I’ll have Ss take a few throughout the year and consider it fwiw—one tool to help them think about your learning on one particular day. And now they need to keep self-assessing themselves #UDLchat
A1: I think teaching students to reflect is key. It's not always an inherent skill to think back and remember what had worked and what hasn't. I also think learners need help looking ahead too and considering results of choices beyond the present moment. #UDLchat
A1: clear and very focused on the goal so students can understand where they’re going which will help them make the right choices to get there. #UDLChat

A1: I remember #udlchat when my son was 3 he would want to purchase a matchbox car and I always had him make the decision. Taught him to line the cars up that he was interested in and then make his decision by slowly eliminating the cars down to one. Miss those days.
A:2 Funny how my son loves choices and makes them well compared to my daughter who will cry if she has to make a choice. #UDLchat
For my daughter it’s around feeling secure, and confident. Once she is confident the choice is easy for her.
A2: I think it’s important to ask questions to get their perspective first and then coach based on their thinking. It cannot be one size fits all! #UDLChat
A2 one problem with choice I hadn’t anticipated was how often some Ss take forever to get going. It’s important to teach Ss how to transition to a choice-based activity and occasionally give some prodding or suggestions to Ss that frequently have trouble choosing! #UDLchat
A2- Start by asking them to eliminate the choices they definitely know they DON'T want. Then ask them, "okay, between the 3 you have left, which one is your least fav?". Baby steps. #UDLchat

Q2. Late to the chat tonight. I think we need to start with small choices and gradually move to more challenging choices so that they have the confidence to make choices that best suit themselves. #UDLchat

A2: My oldest has difficultywith choice so we often get clear on the expectations of each choice and then weigh the pros and cons. This approach helps him. #UDLChat
A2: the UDL framework talks about options that optimize challenge and learning. If that's not happening for a learner, you can narrow down the options list for that learner so a choice comes easier. The goal is optimizing learning, not wasting time or causing anxiety. #UDLchat
I think this has been a failing of mine, especially this year—I started out with lots of options, and looking back, I think I should’ve introduced them more gradually. #UDLchat
A2. It really depends on what the "struggle" is related to. Maybe I offered too many choices, or the choices are not actually "options" because Ss are not sure how each choice will help them really their goal. It definitely helps when the Ss help curate the choices. #udlchat

A3: Today I watched 2nd grade teachers help students reflect on how the choice helped them reach their goal and if the activity was "too easy, just right or too hard" Lessons learned from Goldilocks! The power is in the conversation with the learners. #UDLchat
A3: just today I participated in a circle conversation with a4th grade class after an assessment that didn't go well. With guided questions, they had some great insights on their learning as we shared around the circle. Time well spent. #UDLchat
A3) I have Ss set goals for their learning and periodically self-reflect. We use different tools, sometimes on paper, sometimes a google form. After a choice-based activity, it’s also a good idea to pose the Q: “what option did you choose, & was it productive?” #UDLchat
A3b) sometimes Ss will come to me concerned about low quiz grades, and I will ask them to consider the options that they’ve been choosing when we’ve studied or worked in class. Many acknowledge they aren’t truly challenging themselves. #UDLchat
A3. Self reflection comes in so many ways so I ask students to take moments to reflect mentally, written, and or by video. Sometimes they share and other times it’s just for them. #UDLchat
A3 An approach that some K12 school's use here is called The Learning Pit. It makes visible that connection btw reflection and learning https://t.co/KTeGFYGlzP I really like it, especially as it is supported by visuals and can be applied in any context. #UDLchat

Wow, #UDLchat flew by! Thank you @Lisamarthur18 for hosting with me and sharing such great questions! Thanks everyone for participating - enjoy some quiet time over this holiday season!
A4- I love this question -the options we offer should reflect the variabilityof our learners. so this should help to make those options more appropriate. -#UDLChat
Warm wishes for the season. Thank you #UDLchat it is awesome being able to connect with the #UDL family Think of us as we kick back in the sun https://t.co/J66sGpbC3O
Some people like to leave one or two spots for Ss to offer ideas for their own options. Sometimes they come up with awesome ideas we might never think of! #udlchat
