A1 I like to teach Ss about the uses and limitations of learning style inventories. I’ll have Ss take a few throughout the year and consider it fwiw—one tool to help them think about your learning on one particular day. And now they need to keep self-assessing themselves #UDLchat
  • lindsayjoslater Dec 19 @ 9:07 PM EST
    Yay @Lisamarthur18 & @BGentilleGreen for co-hosting tonight’s #UDLChat
  • BGentilleGreen Dec 19 @ 9:08 PM EST
So important that we all self-assess, always! #UDLchat

A1: Explicitly teach how to use the tools so that an appropriate option can be chosen. #UDLChat
  • Jen_Pusateri Dec 19 @ 9:08 PM EST
Omg! I almost missed it! #UDLchat
  • kate_edgren Dec 19 @ 9:08 PM EST
A1: I think teaching students to reflect is key. It's not always an inherent skill to think back and remember what had worked and what hasn't. I also think learners need help looking ahead too and considering results of choices beyond the present moment. #UDLchat
  • Jen_Pusateri Dec 19 @ 9:08 PM EST

    Q2 coming soon! #UDLchat
  • lindsayjoslater Dec 19 @ 9:09 PM EST
A1: clear and very focused on the goal so students can understand where they’re going which will help them make the right choices to get there. #UDLChat
  • BGentilleGreen Dec 19 @ 9:10 PM EST
Absolutely so important that the goal against which students are self-assessing is crystal clear!! Great point Lindsay! #UDLchat

A1: I remember #udlchat when my son was 3 he would want to purchase a matchbox car and I always had him make the decision. Taught him to line the cars up that he was interested in and then make his decision by slowly eliminating the cars down to one. Miss those days.
  • Ronbrogers - Moderator Dec 19 @ 9:11 PM EST
We would never allow you to miss the #udlchat Jennifer.
  • RCunconanLahr Dec 19 @ 9:11 PM EST
A1: I underscore the value and process for choicemaking. Students need to believe in their own power to make choices #udlchat
  • BGentilleGreen Dec 19 @ 9:11 PM EST
Q2) How do you support learners when they struggle with choice? #UDLChat
  • Jen_Pusateri Dec 19 @ 9:12 PM EST
A1- I like to have Ss keep data on their own choices. Ex. Did you get more work done with or without the fidgets? #UDLchat
  • BGentilleGreen Dec 19 @ 9:13 PM EST
Yes! They become so empowered when they can make their own choices! Increases engagement right now! #UDLchat

  • Ronbrogers - Moderator Dec 19 @ 9:13 PM EST
A:2 Funny how my son loves choices and makes them well compared to my daughter who will cry if she has to make a choice. #UDLchat For my daughter it’s around feeling secure, and confident. Once she is confident the choice is easy for her.
  • lindsayjoslater Dec 19 @ 9:14 PM EST
A2: I think it’s important to ask questions to get their perspective first and then coach based on their thinking. It cannot be one size fits all! #UDLChat
  • MisterHudelson Dec 19 @ 9:15 PM EST
A2 one problem with choice I hadn’t anticipated was how often some Ss take forever to get going. It’s important to teach Ss how to transition to a choice-based activity and occasionally give some prodding or suggestions to Ss that frequently have trouble choosing! #UDLchat
  • Jen_Pusateri Dec 19 @ 9:15 PM EST
A2- Start by asking them to eliminate the choices they definitely know they DON'T want. Then ask them, "okay, between the 3 you have left, which one is your least fav?". Baby steps. #UDLchat
  • Ronbrogers - Moderator Dec 19 @ 9:15 PM EST
Lets get students making decisions and having choices early in their school careers. #udlchat

Q2. Late to the chat tonight. I think we need to start with small choices and gradually move to more challenging choices so that they have the confidence to make choices that best suit themselves. #UDLchat
  • Ronbrogers - Moderator Dec 19 @ 9:16 PM EST

I love this @Jen_Pusateri ! Eliminating choices is sometimes much easier! #UDLChat
  • BGentilleGreen Dec 19 @ 9:16 PM EST
This is true! Choice making and transitions are skills that we have to teach, aren't they?? #UDLchat
    In reply to @MisterHudelson
  • lindsayjoslater Dec 19 @ 9:17 PM EST
A2: My oldest has difficultywith choice so we often get clear on the expectations of each choice and then weigh the pros and cons. This approach helps him. #UDLChat
  • kate_edgren Dec 19 @ 9:17 PM EST
A2: the UDL framework talks about options that optimize challenge and learning. If that's not happening for a learner, you can narrow down the options list for that learner so a choice comes easier. The goal is optimizing learning, not wasting time or causing anxiety. #UDLchat
  • MisterHudelson Dec 19 @ 9:17 PM EST
I think this has been a failing of mine, especially this year—I started out with lots of options, and looking back, I think I should’ve introduced them more gradually. #UDLchat

  • chrissiebutler Dec 19 @ 9:17 PM EST
A2. It really depends on what the "struggle" is related to. Maybe I offered too many choices, or the choices are not actually "options" because Ss are not sure how each choice will help them really their goal. It definitely helps when the Ss help curate the choices. #udlchat

Q3) How do you teach self-reflection (strategies) and facilitate the connection to self-directed learning? #UDLChat
  • RCunconanLahr Dec 19 @ 9:18 PM EST
A2: Suggest students think about their interests, motivation, and also probe what might be their source of hesitation or difficulty #udlchat

A3: Today I watched 2nd grade teachers help students reflect on how the choice helped them reach their goal and if the activity was "too easy, just right or too hard" Lessons learned from Goldilocks! The power is in the conversation with the learners. #UDLchat
  • kate_edgren Dec 19 @ 9:22 PM EST
A3: just today I participated in a circle conversation with a4th grade class after an assessment that didn't go well. With guided questions, they had some great insights on their learning as we shared around the circle. Time well spent. #UDLchat
  • MisterHudelson Dec 19 @ 9:22 PM EST
A3) I have Ss set goals for their learning and periodically self-reflect. We use different tools, sometimes on paper, sometimes a google form. After a choice-based activity, it’s also a good idea to pose the Q: “what option did you choose, & was it productive?” #UDLchat
  • MisterHudelson Dec 19 @ 9:22 PM EST
A3b) sometimes Ss will come to me concerned about low quiz grades, and I will ask them to consider the options that they’ve been choosing when we’ve studied or worked in class. Many acknowledge they aren’t truly challenging themselves. #UDLchat
  • Ronbrogers - Moderator Dec 19 @ 9:22 PM EST
A:3 Asking learners thoughtful questions will support students on this one. #UDLchat
  • pamelayanez62 Dec 19 @ 9:22 PM EST
Q2: explain student that any choice can be change . Be flexible #UDLchat
  • BGentilleGreen Dec 19 @ 9:23 PM EST
#UDLchat is on fire tonight!! Can't believe we only have 7 minutes left!! Keep it going #UDLfamily!!
  • Ronbrogers - Moderator Dec 19 @ 9:24 PM EST
No way only 7 minutes where did the time go @BGentilleGreen #udlchat
  • BGentilleGreen Dec 19 @ 9:25 PM EST
Q4) How do you know when the options you offer are good choices for students? #UDLChat
  • ProfessorDannyS Dec 19 @ 9:25 PM EST
A3. Self reflection comes in so many ways so I ask students to take moments to reflect mentally, written, and or by video. Sometimes they share and other times it’s just for them. #UDLchat
  • Ronbrogers - Moderator Dec 19 @ 9:25 PM EST
If you are new to the #udlchat tonight be sure to follow your new #plc folks in #UDL
  • pamelayanez62 Dec 19 @ 9:26 PM EST
A3: selfdetermination is the key #UDLchat
  • RCunconanLahr Dec 19 @ 9:26 PM EST
A3: Pose questions to students that guide and lead them to their own answers...self-revelation #udlchat
  • MisterHudelson Dec 19 @ 9:26 PM EST
A4) when Ss seem more confident in class. When their mood improves, they ask more questions, and feel empowered to give suggestions. #UDLchat
  • BGentilleGreen Dec 19 @ 9:27 PM EST
Nice! Do you have them keep the written reflections to look back over? #UDLchat

A3 An approach that some K12 school's use here is called The Learning Pit. It makes visible that connection btw reflection and learning https://t.co/KTeGFYGlzP I really like it, especially as it is supported by visuals and can be applied in any context. #UDLchat

A:4 Engagement sours. You can see them working hard and taking ownership. #UDLchat
  • Jen_Pusateri Dec 19 @ 9:28 PM EST
A4- the choices are good whenever the Ss jump right in and start making the activity their own #UDLchat
  • chrissiebutler Dec 19 @ 9:29 PM EST
Q4 Maybe when Ss can jump into a task with confidence #UDLchat
  • UDL_Center Dec 19 @ 9:31 PM EST

Join us tomorrow at noon to talk about how UDL can impact attendence in college classes -#UDLHE. #UDLchat

A4- I love this question -the options we offer should reflect the variabilityof our learners. so this should help to make those options more appropriate. -#UDLChat
  • Lisamarthur18 Dec 19 @ 9:32 PM EST
So maybe if I have too many students struggling with making a choice I need to ask myself if I've provided good options???? #UDLChat

Q4. You know that the choices resonate when they avail of them. Sometimes the class doesn’t pick a choice ie., They vote with their choice. #UDLchat
