#TOSAChat is a chat on Twitter every Monday night at 8pm PST for TOSAs (teachers on special assignment), including all edtech and instructional coaches.
Hi, Lisa! I used to hate yellow cake (in fact, I'd tell people I was allergic so I wouldn't have to eat it), but I have grown to love it! I prefer white frosting, though. #TOSAchat
A1: 1:1 sessions always bring intimacy, opportunities to really listen to the teachers. Listen to their needs & not a solution you already have in mind. #TOSAchat
Stickers too.

A1. Ask questions. I don't want to turn it into "this is what I would do", but find out what they really need and what strengths they already have. #TOSAchat
A1: I like to make sure to spend first part of my 1-on-1 sessions w/a T just catching up & getting to know the person better. Relationships first! And knowing person help me personalize support #TOSAChat
Asking questions is so important in finding the right direction to take a conversation! Sometimes they need to hear what you would do, other times it's already in them and the questions draw it out! #tosachat
A1:Listen and ask a lot of qs. If sharing a tool (seems to be a lot of @Seesaw lately!) then I try to get their gears turning w/ ideas for things to seesaw. This is assuming all relationships are established & solid.
#tosachat
A1: I think my 1:1 are sweetest when I allow them to discover the strengths they already bring to the table and ask them questions to allow them to discover solutions on their own or together. Many times they reach a solution just from me listening. #TOSAchat
@lisawiseman9 This is so insightful and true. That's what I love about Cognitive Coaching. It gives coaches the tools to allow Ts to do just this. #TOSAchat
I can't love this enough! Athletic coaches help athletes to identify an area of need and create minor tweaks to improve. That's what we can do with all Ts. Everyone needs a coach. Even coaches need coaches.
Anyone else singing, "coaches, coaches who need coaches..." #TOSAchat
A2. Find out why people are there. I don't want the same canned presentation for everybody. What do they need. I love presenting with tools like @PearDeck so I can get feedback as I present and modify it as needed. #TOSAchat
A2: I try to sweeten up larger group PD sessions by bringing the fun! We were laughing, singing & joking in last Wednesday’s learning target PD— made the work fun! #TOSAChat
Hi, Eduardo! Welcome to tonight's #tosachat! My husband and son are both big fans of pie. I'll eat it if it's apple or pumpkin. Otherwise, not so much. #TOSAchat
Q2: I like having people share what made them laugh/ smile that week. I also like the improv games that was taught to us by our director of instructional technology @kamithor . As much as I might fight it, improv really does shift your mind to a positive space. #TOSAchat
I think that those that are even resistant to it at first, walk away with a smile on their face. I usually hear, "Well...that was actually fun and my kids would like that too." #TOSAchat
Sometimes we just have to model things to get them to catch on. Some Ts weren't super-thrilled with BreakoutEDU at first, but they've come around! #tosachat
I love a good keynote @MsMagiera@gcouros were great at #ISTE and #CUE. They get me excited about being an educator and motivated to keep doing what Im doing. #tosachat

A3: Right now we are on a @Flipgrid tear. I got EL, ELL, and Math TOSAs using them at their PDs. Such a practical tool but has amazing wow factor. #tosachat
A3.Try to focus on the pedagogy, but right now @flipgrid, @PearDeck and @quizizz are my go to tools. These can build interest and are often the gateway drugs to truly changing how teachers teach. #TOSAchat
A3: What @Jyoung1219 said AGAIN. This 100% hits the nail on the head. It's ALL eye candy until you get to know it, until you understand the depth of it, until you know WHY you are doing what you're doing. PREACH, Joe Young. PREACH. #tosachat
A1: I make sure I know what they are wanting before I get there. Try to make sure they have something they can use before I go. And encourage them to set up a follow up appointment before I leave. #TOSAchat
Q3: I think HyperDocs are the "eye-candy" of ed tech. There is a lot of potential for differentiation, UDL, and personalized, self-paced learning, if done to its potential. #TOSAchat
A3: Best eye-candy is Twitter, but it’s too hawt for most. That #PLN relationship has to grow organically. 😉
Honestly, I think collaboration features within GSuite is the most appealing during the honeymoon phase. #tosachat

A2: Seek staff input for PD opportunities. Sessions are optional for personalized choices. Provide engaging, quality PD. Value everyone's time. Continue learning with 1-1 follow-up support. #TOSAchat
A2: I make sure to give them sandbox time. And I have been incorporating @KaganOnline structures to create a brain-friendly environment thanks to training from @RedWingGurl#TOSAchat
I've found that getting back to set appointment times w/ Ts has been really helpful for followup. We usually plan next steps & then follow up. #tosachat
Creating PD based on the needs of a staff is a great way to start building trust with others. When we bring what they need/want based on their input, it's nothing but good. #tosachat
I still use and LOVE https://t.co/TQYARMiGbX That is one of the first things I learned from you #TOSAchat peeps. It saves me and now works with my school Outlook calendar.
A4: I like to "sugar coat" new ideas with value. Sometimes, I even serve it with a glaze of problem-solving, and a light sprinkle of benefits. #tosachat
A4: asking questions and finding a way the new "whatever" solves a problem or makes a process easier, offer to come co-teach with them or teach a demo lesson #TOSAchat
i use it still also! I have two adopted 2nd grade classes I see weekly to increase my knowledge for that grade level. Would love more 'beta' classes! #tosachat
A4: I try to connect it to something they are already doing, or show them something that can be used for lots of things. Ex. Chromebooks purchased for set curriculum can be used for SO MANY things. #TOSAchat
Hey Karly. Glad you made it. I was asked about creating a computer science type class. May I ask what you use for your computer science curriculum? #tosachat

@KarlyMoura, @peerlessgreen, @kmartintahoe, @cogswell_ben, @EdTechAri, @Jyoung1219
A4. Often it is tech. Sometimes teachers view it as just another thing that they need to. I start by showing them how tech can make something they already do easier. Helps to get those reluctant teachers on board. #TOSAchat
A4: I sugar coat new ideas that may be more intimidating by leading w/how it’s good for kids... then offer to do a demo or co-teach so T can see it in action #TOSAChat
The sugar coat for reluctant teachers is always how the tech will make their lives easier. Without that piece, reluctant Ts will really struggle to eat the candy (drink the koolaid? you choose). #tosachat
This is so important and is at the essence of technology. Tech should take something off of their plate, eventually. Sometimes that is the hardest part of getting teachers invested, it takes time. #tosachat
A4: I sugar coat new ideas that may be more intimidating by leading w/how it’s good for kids... then offer to do a demo or co-teach so T can see it in action #TOSAChat
It amazes me that Ts are still shocked that I will come in an teach a lesson to their class. YES! This is what I love to do most. Invite me in! #TOSAchat
A4: I like to propose ideas based on factual evidence that shows a need for attention. I let the individual/ teams discuss the "glows and grows." Glows= the positives of what they are doing in that area, followed by an action plan based on area needing to grow. #TOSAchat
I just heard Glows and Grows for the first time from our consultants a few weeks ago. I love the concept. I'm all over that one! It has such a positive spin! #tosachat
@EdTechEddie if you have any Additional, send them my way, I'm happy to share and help, and esp get feedback from those who try our curriculum #TOSAchat

I know. That's part of why trust is so important. When I go to a T and I say, "I promise this is going to be easy at some point, but it's going to be really hard now," they will work with me if we have the right trusting relationship. #tosachat
A5: EdCamps make me feel like that. I leave so energized by the connection with other educators.
Shameless plug: Burbank is hosting one April 7th. 8-12:30. You should check it out! #TOSAchathttps://t.co/sd5HMwuxAI
A5: The @CUERockStar events are always full of delicious ideas. #edcamp sessions offer a tantalizing array of sweet treats, too. And, I'm excited to visit #lead3 this year...I've heard it's magical!
#tosachat
A5: Learning at amazing conferences always re-energizes me! ... and watching students in the driver's seat, motivated and leading their own learning experiences is quite exciting. #TOSAchat
Well, actually no ISTE for me this year, after doing last 3yrs... but between CUE, SXSWEDU & facilitating #picademy New Jersey I’m already feeling the sugar rush!! #TOSAchat
Hey Karly. I just found your @Flipgrid ebook today. So great! @RedWingGurl and I are doing a training to get a beta group of teachers up and running next month. Can't wait to share! #TOSAchat

A5. I love just sitting down and talking to teachers about what they are doing, this chat, when I get to see teachers use what we talked about, and #CUE18#TOSAchat
A4: Sugar coating is about bringing teachers to the moral high ground with you. We make our recommendations for the students, not to make their lives harder. #TOSAChat
A3: Sorry I’m so late! “Eye candy” is usually and extension or presentation tool that makes the teachers life a little easier. I prefer to start with a real classroom problem first, then suggest multiple tech fixes to choose from. #TOSAChat
A6: It's not just one thing, but when Ts write me TY notes or emails to let me know how they appreciated what we did together, it really warms my heart. I need to be better about showing my appreciation of others either through notes, little gifts, or CANDY #TosaChat
A6: I have two. A MS class I worked w/ a lot last semester signed a card and gave me goodies 4 Christmas. & @teachor18 had her 1st gr class make me cards for my bday cuz I went in to work with them that day. They sang to me and everything. #TOSAchat
A2: Large PD sessions require activity for the attendees and small group discussion to reach all Ts. Really it’s just like the classroom for the Ss. Have the Ts do the thing you are showing them. #TOSAChat
As a language teacher, I loved attending @actfl and local/state WL conferences. I also always enjoy @AMLE. Hoping to attend #ISTE18 for the first time this year! :) #TOSAchat
A6: Sweetest thing a teacher (professor) ever did: took the time to listen. Her kindness made things seem a lot less bitter.
#sorryimnotsorry for dragging this metaphor through every reply #tosachat
Interesting! We have CLMS (California League of Middle Schools) and I only attended one year, but it was a great conference. Hope to see you at ISTE! #TOSAchat
A6: Just today a big hug from a rambunctious, but sweet little 5th grader that I haven’t seen since last yr made my month! I plan to pay the love forward this month w/smiles, treats & notes of encouragement! #TOSAChat
I have a folder full of positive emails from students and colleagues about positive interactions that I look at when I’m down. I also love it when my students come back to visit after graduation. A casual cup of coffee goes a long way to rejuvenate me. #TOSAChat
My Ss threw me a goodbye party when I left the classroom and took the TOSA job. I still have all of their letters, cards, and kind sentiments. It was really touching. #tosachat
