Paul Solarz, 5th grade teacher from Arlington Heights, Illinois & author of #LearnLAP ("Learn Like a PIRATE"). Very thankful to have @RichHayzler moderating tonight!
Good evening! Julie Carlson from Pequannock High School. Excited to learn about some tools for motivating teenagers who look like the gif below :) #LearnLAP
A1 I am lucky, because Science is built on a foundation of curiosity. Half of discoveries start with "hey that's cool, I wonder why that happens." #LearnLAP
A1: Curiosity looks like healthy discussion, relevant questions, risk-taking, students and teachers challenging each other with energy and passion. It is great to see our students building, analyzing, reflecting, challenging, collaborating, and growing together. #learnlap
A1: Curiosity looks like students asking good questions and then having the freedom to explore answers. Good questioning takes a lot of practice, especially if a student comes from a classroom where they only get to give answers. #learnlap
Q1: Curiosity is seen when students start to take off with follow-up questions and spontaneous debates. Today it came up in the form of a debate about the nature of "genocide" when studying the World Wars #LearnLAP
A1: Curiosity looks like sailing beyond the seas and venturing to an unknown destination which can reap many rewards. My students ask a lot of questions, and I love trying to be a facilitator instead of controlling the discussion. #learnlap
A1: Curiosity looks like healthy discussion, relevant questions, risk-taking, students and teachers challenging each other with energy and passion. It is great to see our students building, analyzing, reflecting, challenging, collaborating, and growing together. #learnlap
A1: Students asking questions as we discuss topics. I basically always have to plan in time because students are asking questions and want to know more! I love it! #learnlap
A1: curiosity in the classroom begins with students generating the questions. In science we use phenomenon to generate questions. In math I’m a huge fan of 3-Act lessons @ddmeyer to stimulate curiosity #learnlap
A1:
In my drama classroom, curiosity takes many different forms—movement, voices, reading scripts. It takes in the form of a drive oftentimes—will she give me a scene I can’t do? An improv scenario that stumps me? #LearnLAP
A1 Curiosity means thinking outside of the box. Ss asking questions, taking risks, and everyone trying something new. It's the desire to know discover something new. #LearnLAP
A1 Why do Kindergarteners ask question after question, but by the time they are in third or fourth grade it stops? What do we do to stifle curiosity? How can we bring it back? #LearnLAP
A1- Curiosity is Ss wanting to ask questions and having the freedom to find answers. I encourage it, but don't see enough of it. Ss still get stuck in the curriculum which doesn't always excite them- but working on changing that!
#learnlap
A1 - My Ss demonstrate curiosity when they investigate Mystery Powders & Crystals as forensic detectives, explore personal interests in Passion Time, explore sites on Mars to create OUR terraformed colony & when they look things up while reading self-selected novels. #LearnLAP
Ss gain curiosity by having an environment that allows for students to question and take risks. Its okay to fail as long as we learn from the failure and use reflection to grow! #LearnLAP
Hello All! Gayle, Business Teacher from Pequannock, NJ. A1. In my classroom, students have figured out that creative thinking + desire to learn = their happiness and growth #LearnLAP
A1: Curiosity looks like when students are able to experience something for the very first time and then they want to have more of those experiences. #LearnLAP
A1: Curiosity means wanting to learn more about something that sounds interesting at first glance! After students hear something, do they want more on that topic? #LearnLAP
A1: usually for my littles in #physed I am trying to teach them the difference between a question or comment. My goal is for students to understand why we are learning a certain skill with #learnlap
A1: Curiosity in HS looks a little different! Ss ask questions that make the content relevant to them. They try and fit new information into their world and existing schema. #LearnLAP
A1: In college, I learned what it takes to be a deep learner rather than surface learner, Curiosity is something that is crucial to me as a student teacher because I am always thinking "how can I make this work?". #learnlap
A1: It’s great to see Ss have that look when you know they are pondering something. It starts with a twinkle in the eye, a smile and then a question. You can feel it when they are hooked. #LearnLAP
A1 Today, curiosity was my upperclassmen asking questions about college applications during Personal Finance. I love making my class real & relevant! #learnlap
A1: In PreK? "But why?" a million times a day!! Today: Our calendar numbers are the front and back of coins. "Who's that?" lead to learning that Theodore Roosevelt was the only president to hold office four consecutive terms. "But why?" Because he was that good! #LearnLAP
A2:Establish positive relationships with students built on trust, respect, honesty and empathy.Create an atmosphere were learning is encouraged, supported, reflected on and celebrated. When students feel comfortable to take risks then their curiosity will be set on fire #learnlap
Steve Hall Principal Piney Creek School, Alleghany County NC jumping in late. A1: We build curiosity through our Makerspace as well as "Maker Mornings" before school each day. Students have a safe place where ALL can be creative. #learnlap
A2: Hint at a few things without giving away too much. When we would read Macbeth, we would start by talking about passion for power without even referencing Shakespeare or the play itself (I miss those days!). #learnlap
A1. Curiosity deals with investigating the issue or problem. Asking questions and making comments or observations about what is seen. What changes are taking place? What effects are causing the changes to occur? Asking open-ended questions to continue the inquiry. #learnlap
That's authentic learning. They are curious, engaged, and want to know more through the activity you planned. I love that about early childhood. You set the tone and they lead the entire lesson with their inquiry! #LearnLAP
A2 Lead with exploration and engagement. Don't be so quick to give them the answers (or the questions). Let them ponder , think and wonder for a bit. #LearnLAP
A2: Practice asking and asking the five whys. EX: Why did Washington cross the Delaware? To prepare a sneak attack on Hessian forces at Trenton? Why? Why? -- continue the process five times. Usually there are more "whys" after that. #LearnLAP
A2: driving their questions, leaving them wondering and keeping learning relevant to them! Oh, I also post little clues on what’s coming up in class using #Instagram#learnlap
A2: Due to being a student teacher, I feel like I want to get better at this. I want to become stronger in regards to questioning and pushing my students to think beyond the surface. I have a long way to go, but this community is helping me fill in my gaps. #learnlap
Spark interest in students by helping them find their passions and allowing them to learn and explore more about them. Speak with your students about their interests #LearnLAP
A1: My absolute favorite words to hear are “Mrs. P., I have a question!” Curiosity is everywhere, in every text we read. Ss bring up so many insightful thoughts and ideas I hadn’t thought of myself. #learnlap
A2: Always leave them wanting more. I like to ask questions that lead students to asking more questions after they answer it. I want them to continue to question and build up an understanding of what we are learning about! #learnlap
A2) By asking open ended questions; developing exciting lesson openers; By modeling my own curiosity by asking a lot of "I wonder" questions. #LearnLAP
A2 Sorry, I missed #1. I try to spark it by not answering all questions and leaving them to explore for more, dropping a head scratching comment that leads them to want more, and incorporate @ArgumentDriven science activities. #LearnLAP
A1: Curiosity is embedded, we start with what Ss know, and then address what they don't know or they want to know. We have PBL, Genius Hour, flexible groups, class meeting, etc. Questioning is embedded. #LearnLap
A2 - It's my job to remind them that curiosity is valued, even if people have been telling them "Look it up!" or "Ask your father" whenever they have a question. :) My students use me as a source for their curiosities, as well as our devices & our peers! #LearnLAP
A1: hi all, I’m Alexia, an 8th-9th math teacher from NJ. Curiosity in my classroom comes from open ended discussions in my geometry class. I love opening lessons with diagrams and ask “what do you notice? What do you wonder?” Their responses drive the lesson! #learnLAP
A2: I'm all about the healthy struggle! I love to challenge students to the point right before they want to give up! This only works with good relationships built on trust and plenty of positive encouragement and support. But it keeps Ss hungry for more. #LearnLAP
A1 ☠️ it looks like total utter MAYHEM in my room - to the untrained eye!! 😉😉. It’s looks like “organized chaos” to some!! It looks like “Sticky learning” to others & to me, it looks like Fantabulosity smothered in awesomesauceness! Kids learning & experiencing! #learnLAP
A2: I try to pose essential questions in discussions or activities which challenge students’ worldview. To force them to think outside the box and approach new perspectives.
#learnLAP
A2 When you lead with a question, it can lead to curiosity. Get Ss to a place where they ask each other, "...but why?" or, "How did that happen?" #learnlap
That is a great thing to work on. Continue to build relationships with the students and the questions will come which will ultimately lead to curiosity! #LearnLAP
A2: With preschoolers it's so easy! Everything they do is something different. It's all about exposing them to new and different things and showing your own excitement about teaching it! #LearnLAP
My 1st graders have been reading about Teddy Roosevelt today, too! Between this camping trip that chnged America - and his Christmas tree in the white house in December - we've learned lots about this man and his 6 kids. Books are powerful! #LearnLAP
A2: Ask questions, listen to students ask questions, get to know passions, brainstorm problems and ask Ss to solve them. It could be as small as supporting an interest or as complex as solving a large problem. #LearnLAP
A1:
I spark curiosity by playing a new theatre game and letting the Ss know it will tie to the lesson’s skill focus. Or I show an I Love Lucy clip and have the Ss discuss what they see and try to name it generically as a skill/process. I bring in a prop, costume, etc. #LearnLAP
#learnlap A2: Last homework question of every set is a leading question towards what we will learn tomorrow. Also...don't answer every question you ask. Let Ss figure it out. I'll sometimes leave the room, which is the signal that they CAN figure this out with each other.
A2: teacher sets the tone- allows freedom for students to collaborate, create authentic experiences, ask open-ended questions, provide tools and resources that encourage moments of discovery #learnlap
A2.2: Also, practice taking a 360 degree view of something. For instance, there is a WHOLE lot more going on at a baseball game than just the game. #LearnLAP
A2. Start with a demonstration for an experiment then ask open ended questions to Ss. Have Ss lead the conversations with Ss voice and choice based on their knowledge and curiosity of the topic being covered! #learnlap
Yes those relationships are essential. Student curiosity can be easily hampered by an environment where they do not feel connected. Good for you for developing a system of support! #learnlap
A2: I don’t just give answers. I trying help the students think about the problem and let the struggle a little bit. When we are done we ask what we could have done differently. #LearnLAP
A2 #learnlap I begin the yr by asking lots of ? Of them-all types(personal&school), but by Nov. ?s come from Ss. They develop their own. We don’t use hands-we just ask and discuss & I try 2 stay out of it. The more I give to them, the more they let loose. Fun-interesting!
In math class, it has to do with presenting them with something like a 3-act task that leaves them wondering--love pictures that spark the "wonder" of math #learnlap
I try to find a mix of things Ss are interested in and things they don’t know much about. I encourage them to express thoughts and ideas, especially when it leads to discovery on their own. #LearnLAP
#learnlap The art of answering a question with a question is a delicate one, but one that helps foster curiosity. You have to be careful that you don't give the impression of sarcasm or refusing to help. The "return question" must be calibrated to produce focused curiosity!
A3: We need problem finders and problem solvers in our world. If you are curious you are going to find problems and solve them to make life better for all humans. #LearnLap
A3: Of course, I want my students to be kind and compassionate, but I also want them to challenge their ways of thinking. I want them to be confident and develop into lifelong learners. We need to be better at not stifling curiosity. #learnlap
A3: We want schools to be places of innovation, creativity and inquiry. Schools should be a place where students want to explore, discover, build mastery and share knowledge. By encouraging curiosity learning can become a lifelong process rather than a "school event." #learnlap
Humor, story telling, making the content relatable to them in their now. Incorporate social media, be adventurous. Look into ways that will engage the learner. Have you heard of Room Transformations or ever thought of gamification? #learnlap
A3. If it doesn’t mean anything to them, they may remember it for the test, but then it will be gone. We want them to synthesize information in ways that are meaningful to them! #LearnLAP
Student curiosity grabs the attention of students and wants to make them dig deeper for understanding on their own because they want to know more #LearnLAP
Hi #LearnLAP. Sorry to be joining late. A2 Ts spark curiosity by giving Ss time to wonder & ask questions. We've also been using @thrively to give Ss an opportunity to discover their passions & interests.
A3 Curiosity is the foundation of what we need for our future success. We need to create students looking towards the future, not living in the past. Curiosity is what drives you forward. #LearnLAP
A3: I want them to be able to solve problems that I don’t even know are problems yet. I want them to imagine the future that I want to live in. #LearnLAP
A3: If curiosity in 1969 put a man on the moon, imagine what can happen if we make our students curious in 2018. We have the opportunity to empower our students to do GREAT things in the future! Curiosity is that spark! #learnlap
A3: @joboaler who inspires me as a pre-service teacher mentioned that mistakes are valuable because they help your brain grow. We need to push our students to venture beyond the status quo. #learnlap
A3: So curiosity isn't lost amidst the sometimes oppressive requirements of traditional school. It is so important for us to do what we can to keep curiosity alive! #LearnLAP
A3 Being curious is the soul of being a life long learner. It's the drive to always to know more, learn more, be better. If we can spark this love of learning now, imagine what type of citizens our Ss will be! #LearnLAP
A3 It's important because it helps them think, think critically, question, research, communicate, collaborate, and it opens the door to their own thoughts and to be able to act on their creativity. #LearnLap
A1: When kids are free to be kids, encouraged to wonder & take risks, so many things happen. Having simple, open-ended ?s & authentic tools inspire kids to do meaningful things. When adding pages to a nonfic bk during Wrtg Wrkshp today, sev began creating new names... #LearnLAP
A3: We have the power to ignite that spark. Many of us went into education because we had “that” person in our life. Now we have an opportunity to do that for kids. #LearnLAP
A3.2: As admin and teachers we have a responsibility to empower students to pursue learning. By encouraging curiosity students learn to think critically, ask questions, take risks, be reflective, grow in ways that are not possible in a "traditional" classroom." #learnlap
A3 Curiosity is the foundation of what we need for our future success. We need to create students looking towards the future, not living in the past. Curiosity is what drives you forward. #LearnLAP
A3 - Curiosity is the motivator of learning. When curiosity is nurtured, learning skyrockets! Once you have curious students, give them the tools, knowledge, permission & encouragement to discover the answers to their questions! That's how we grow Lifelong Learners! #LearnLAP
A3: Students need to learn critical thinking skills and learn how to think outside the box! Student curiosity leads to fresh ideas and productive conversation. #LearnLAP
A3: One day our Ss will be the ones expected to answer questions that haven't ever been dreamed of being asked yet! We must foster the creativity and curiosity in them now so they are empowered to try and answer them! The greatest innovators were once students. #LearnLAP
A3. When we are encouraging Ss curosity, we are encouraging Ss to take a risk in learning to investigate and explore something new. Find out how something functions, what it consists of, what are in it's contents, etc. #learnlap
A3: Without stimulating and promoting curiosity, are we really helping to create lifelong learners? Students should be exploring and creating each and everyday! #LearnLAP
A3: If we are truly sincere about creating life-long learners (and not just using those buzz words) then we have to encourage and cultivate curiosity in our students (and in our coworkers and ourselves!!!). #learnlap
A3 Ss who are curious will want to learn. If you aren't curious, you are probably not interested. It's important to relate content to the real world to help Ss build curiosity and interest. #LearnLAP
A3: If I’m not interested and not modeling myself as a learner, Ss are less interested, less motivated to ask their questions. Curiosity leads all new interests and ideas. #LearnLAP
A "Mathacognition" question I ask Ss is to think about a skill they had trouble learning. What were the steps taken to learn it? Did they work with anyone? Did someone ask them for help? What were the elements that made it "click?" #learnlap
A3: Success in life depends on the ability to figure out new solutions to challenges. As educators we can instill this by encouraging curiosity everyday #learnlap
It’s important to build a comfortable classroom culture that allows for students to feel comfortable to make mistakes and learn from mistakes. #LearnLAP
A3: My Twitter journey started because I was curious about what it can offer me as a pre-service teacher. I joined because of @RaeHughart and never looked back. I got to moderate two chats since then and have grown my PLN just by taking a leap of faith. #learnlap
Sometimes you have to begin with building the rapport and trust with the kids. It’s important to have that sound relationship and then the rest gets easier (not completely easy, but not quite as challenging). #learnlap
A1: To me, students demonstrate curiosity when they determine what questions are left unanswered and what avenues will help them find the answers. I <3 when students take their questions home with them and don't just abandon them in the classroom. #LearnLAP
Q4: Asking the right questions can lead students to pursue their own learning. What questions do you ask that tend to spark student curiosity? #LearnLAP
A3 #learnlap Wo/curiosity, the growth of knowledge begins 2 slow down. Our Ss have a long way 2 go in their lives. We have to feed that curiosity in our lessons, so they do not shut down their creative juices. At 61 I can say, Life long learning is essential to a well-lived life.
As a Principal, it begins with modeling it with our staff and students. Let them see what curiosity looks like. Be unpredictable, be relevant, be real! #learnlap
A3- What Ss will retain the most is the knowledge and answers they find themselves- When Ss question and seek answers, its important and relevant to them- So much more meaningful! #learnlap
A4: As a student teacher, I feel like I fall short with this. I know I am just starting out, but I truly want to get better at getting my students to think beyond the scope and sequence of my math class. #learnlap
A4) I like asking essential questions that get to the big ideas of our units. These are open ended questions, so Ss tend to have to do some more thinking and digging. #LearnLAP
Q4: Asking the right questions can lead students to pursue their own learning. What questions do you ask that tend to spark student curiosity? #LearnLAP
A1: When they ask me so many questions & I say, "I don't know, what do you think?" Who could you ask? Where do you think we could find the answers? What do you want to know? Etc. #LearnLAP
A4: Start with "Why?..." Everyone needs to find their "Why?" When students realize why they are learning what they are learning, the next question can be, "How can you use what you know to make a difference?" #LearnLAP
A4 - As often as possible, I try to turn the questioning around on my students. They ask themselves and each other the questions. I give feedback to help improve/refine the questions, they answer the questions! We can call it the "Curiosity Cycle!" :) #LearnLAP
A1b: ...for tools. They were enthralled w/ a staple remover, calling it an "unstapleanator!" Before we knew it, we had a new cls journal for interesting names of things! #LearnLAP They can't wait to add more words to our journal. Now so many are adding more pgs to their bks, too!
A4: I tend to take the opposite approach. I try to teach them how to ask really good questions and give them the chance to practice this skill regularly. I want the questions to start with them. #LearnLAP
Q4: Asking the right questions can lead students to pursue their own learning. What questions do you ask that tend to spark student curiosity? #LearnLAP
A4: Why? How would this....? What does this mean for...? Questions that do not have a simple answer, but rather require critical thinking. Go beyond what Google can do. #learnlap
A4 Those questions that make you stop and think first. Not only, "why" but "why not?" How do you know? How would it be different if... What can you do... #LearnLAP
I use @classcraftgame! It’s super easy to use and has everything set up in one place. It’s very middle school/HS student friendly! It has quests, XP, AP, HP, GP, characters, pets, boss battles, random events and more built into it. It makes my heart HAPPY! Ss love it. #learnlap
A4: Why? Why is that important? Why does this matter? How? How does this apply to your life? How do you know? How does this impact you and others? #relevance#relationships#LearnLAP
Q4: Asking the right questions can lead students to pursue their own learning. What questions do you ask that tend to spark student curiosity? #LearnLAP
A4. Can you explain why that works? What does this remind you of? If we know “this”, then what do you think about “that”? Where have you seen this before? #learnlap
A4 #LearnLAP the ? That spark the best curiosity is when I somehow connect the ideas of what they r reading or learning 2 their lives. What would u do? Why? Would that work? Those personal connections engage and spark! That spark leads to curiosity.
Q4: Asking the right questions can lead students to pursue their own learning. What questions do you ask that tend to spark student curiosity? #LearnLAP
Q4: Asking the right questions can lead students to pursue their own learning. What questions do you ask that tend to spark student curiosity? #LearnLAP
A4: "Tell my about your thinking." "How did you come up with that." "Tell me more!" Every day, I post a random picture on the SmartBoard and ask my Ss to tell me everything they think, notice, see in the picture. They come up with things I didn't even notice! #LearnLAP
A4: I often aggravate kids by turning their questions around on them. I encourage them to find the answer when they're capable of it. By midyear they know that they are capable of finding those answers. I use "Why?" so often that a S said I sound like his 2 yo bro . #learnlap
A4: As often as I could, I would have my students start with questions about themselves (didn't matter what the topic was) and always leave time/room for a "why". #LearnLAP
#learnlap A4: For example: "Alex says the answer is 2/3. How do you think Alex got that answer? Does it look plausible, given the problem? And if you disagree with Alex, what question would you ask her that will help her consider what you are thinking?"
Q4: Asking the right questions can lead students to pursue their own learning. What questions do you ask that tend to spark student curiosity? #LearnLAP
A4 - As often as possible, I try to turn the questioning around on my students. They ask themselves and each other the questions. I give feedback to help improve/refine the questions, they answer the questions! We can call it the "Curiosity Cycle!" :) #LearnLAP
A3. We need to ignite that spark in our students! They need to be innovators, engineers, makers- they should be the driver in their education and most of all HAVE FUN learning! I always ask myself if I would want to be in my class today? Why or why not? #reflection#learnlap
A4: History can be very boring, but I can make it exciting by framing my activities around questions that activate student curiosity. Ex- How would your lives be different living under Hammurabi’s Code?#LearnLAP
I'm a off the high dive and I'll figure it out on the way down kind of girl. Doesn't work for everyone but it usually works for me and models to the students that I'm constantly learning and when I know better, I do (or at least try) better. #learnlap
Q4: Asking the right questions can lead students to pursue their own learning. What questions do you ask that tend to spark student curiosity? #LearnLAP
More often .... #learnlap And be careful how you answer. I.e. I gave my K students the math problem 3-4 = X .... they thought and said it's impossible ... I replied, for now.
Q5: Technology enables students to pursue learning in ways we couldn’t as students. How do you leverage technology to enhance student curiosity in your classroom? Share resources, apps, tools you use to spark learning. #learnlap
A4:
It may sound simple, but my two basic questions that get them going are 1.) How can you better tell your character’s story? and What else can you do that shows the humanity of your character? #LearnLAP
A3 I think all children are naturally curious. It is our job as teachers to let them know that their curiosity is welcome in our classroom. #LearnLAP#WALearnLAP
A4: I think presenting students with a problem- especially a real-world problem- and then giving them the space & the tools to devise & test numerous solutions to that problem is always a winner. #LearnLAP
Q4: Asking the right questions can lead students to pursue their own learning. What questions do you ask that tend to spark student curiosity? #LearnLAP
A2: Live a life of inquiry & curiosity in front of them, too. In exposing them to all kinds of engaging things, we can excitedly learn together. When I open possibilities w/ sci experiments, they bring in so many artifacts of their own to share, too. #LearnLAP
A1. Students in my class show curiosity by leading discussions, asking questions, searching for answers, and driving their learning by choosing topics and products of interest. #LearnLAP
Q4: Asking the right questions can lead students to pursue their own learning. What questions do you ask that tend to spark student curiosity? #LearnLAP
A5: Technology should be a supplement to learning. Use technology to allow students to find their voice. @Flipgrid@breakoutedu@Screencastify@padlet, start a blog. The great thing about #edtech is that students can choose what works for them. #LearnLAP
A5: I love using technology to promote curiosity! Loving #HyperDocs so students can explore new information at their own pace.
Love using #FlipGrid to help students find their voice.
ADORE @SpiralEducation for using video/questions. #learnlap
A5: I used Google Classroom like a Twitter Chat, Google Sites to have students design websites based on Roaring 20s Research, Shark Tank Project for inventions, museum exhibit designing, and more! #learnlap
A1 We create individual action plans where the Ss decide: what they want to learn, how they want to go about learning it & what they will do with the info once they have learned it. They can pick pretty much anything and we relate it back to the course. Also#geniushour #LearnLAP
A4: Open ended questions! Questions that are not simply "yes" or "no"answers. Questions that are geared towards group discussion sparks creative dialogue. #learnlap
A4. What problems do you want to solve today? What do you wonder today? Why? How? What do you think? What impact to we want to make on the world today? Who will you impact today?
#learnlap
A4: Simply asking HS students what they want to do with their life is powerful and leads to authentic discussions about the importance of education #LearnLAP
Q4: Asking the right questions can lead students to pursue their own learning. What questions do you ask that tend to spark student curiosity? #LearnLAP
A3: I think that Ss are so naturally curious & they ask so many questions all day long. I want them to explore their curiosities instead of telling them that we don't have time for that because they have work to do! We need curiosity in the future workforce! #LearnLAP
Have you read "Learn Like a PIRATE" and want to connect with others at your grade level or in your position to discuss how to implement it? Add your name to the #LearnLAP PLN here: https://t.co/yqOsvPp2kv Hundreds of people to connect with for ideas, resources, and advice! :)
A5: Technology should be a supplement to learning. Use technology to allow students to find their voice. @Flipgrid@breakoutedu@Screencastify@padlet, start a blog. The great thing about #edtech is that students can choose what works for them. #LearnLAP
A5: My SmartBoard. I have four iPad in a center and one iPad to use Osmo apps. "Letter and Number Writer" "Bugs & Bubbles" "Letter Muncher" "Teach Me Preschool" There are several others. I just can't remember them. It's been a Monday... #LearnLAP
A5 Use QR codes around your room. Let kids discover or even create them. Use @padlet as a way for students to engage in a discussion. Connect with classes from all around this way. Use hyperdocs as a way to let students explore a variety of media. #LearnLAP
A5: I find that I am able to spark curiosity more with teachers using tech tools than withstudents. Students take them for what they are tools to enhance. Teachers are more amazed with what they’re able to do and create. #LearnLAP
Q5: Technology enables students to pursue learning in ways we couldn’t as students. How do you leverage technology to enhance student curiosity in your classroom? Share resources, apps, tools you use to spark learning. #learnlap
A5: Google Earth is an AMAZING tool! We used it in my classroom to visit various American landmarks and it blew their minds. For students who have never left our town, much less our state, it was a game changer. #LearnLAP
Q5: Technology enables students to pursue learning in ways we couldn’t as students. How do you leverage technology to enhance student curiosity in your classroom? Share resources, apps, tools you use to spark learning. #learnlap
A3 I think all children are naturally curious. It is our job as teachers to let them know that their curiosity is welcome in our classroom. #LearnLAP#WALearnLAP
Q5: Technology enables students to pursue learning in ways we couldn’t as students. How do you leverage technology to enhance student curiosity in your classroom? Share resources, apps, tools you use to spark learning. #learnlap
I have used breakout rooms for students to think critically and have students work collaboratively. I use them as final assessments and reviews of units #LearnLAP
A5 One of my favorite ways to incorporate technology into the classroom is using @brainPOP- Ss are always excited to learn with Moby. We also use @thrively & google classroom. 3rd graders love learning how to collaborate on Google docs and slides. #LearnLAP
A5: Tech gives us answers at our fingertips for curiosities. I remember being stuck for days wondering things that I couldn't find answers for in the World Books. Sometimes I wonder which way is better, to know, or to continue to search & wonder. What do you think? #LearnLAP
A5: I use heart rate monitors and pedometers to give students instant feedback! Students love to see their heart rates and progress right away. #learnlap
A4: I wonder how we can figure that out... Who would be interested in learning this information? (In terms of perspectives of geographers, naturalists, ornithologists...) What else have we been learning that reminds you of this? #KidsAsResearchers#LearnLAP
A5: @Flipgrid and @goformative are two excellent resources that I’m loving this year! Both resources present instant feedback and flexibility for students and teachers. #LearnLAP
Q5: Technology enables students to pursue learning in ways we couldn’t as students. How do you leverage technology to enhance student curiosity in your classroom? Share resources, apps, tools you use to spark learning. #learnlap
A4 “Imagine this happened to you or your family, how would you handle this situation?” - Personal Finance. Or I give them a mock budget to manage! #learnlap
A5: technology is a way to supplement teaching and learning, not replace it. The question to ask is “could I do this without tech?” I use desmos a lot (math specific), quizizz, socrative and google classroom #learnlap
Q6: Curiosity can ultimately lead to risk-taking or even failure by a student. How do you encourage students to embrace a growth mindset when learning doesn’t go according to plan? #learnlap
A5: I like to use Spiral when using YouTube videos for instruction because students can develop questions on a running blog and respond to their peers! They can express their curiosity about what they are watching. #LearnLAP
Welcome to tonight's #learnlap chat! Let's talk learning in Climate of Curiosity! Please introduce yourself, your position and where you are from. Feel free to share a gif! Let's build our PLN together! Welcome aboard! @LearnLAP
A5 google classroom/flipgrid/Kahoot/ creating with slides etc, collaborating across the globe with flipgrid, using student-generated kahoots .., etc #learnLAP
My Ss just finished writing and showing Public Service Announcements to compare modern day issues to the same issues from the Progressive Era #LearnLAP
A4. I like to ask "How would you..." "What if" "If you were..." and "Where could we find out more about..." questions. And then let them look for the answers or prove their ideas. #LearnLAP
A1 Curiosity is the courage to explore something and fail in the process. As an admin, I strive to encourage my teachers to explore their interests, even if that means the possibility of failure. When they find successes it is so rewarding! #learnlap
A5 #LearnLAP@glogster@Storyboard curiosity takes us 2 unknown, exciting& interesting places. We want 2 share what we learn. these sites offer fun & creative options 4 Ss to take their newfound knowledge and share w/their peers. @glogster then offers Ss 2 blog on the glogs! Fun!
Q5: Technology enables students to pursue learning in ways we couldn’t as students. How do you leverage technology to enhance student curiosity in your classroom? Share resources, apps, tools you use to spark learning. #learnlap
A6: If you are comfortable as a teacher to "fail up" in front of your students, even ask them for help coming up with another plan, they see it as valuable and embrace learning from mistakes. Celebrate Failing Up! #LearnLAP
A6: Failure is just another learning opportunity! I think you have to model it, sometimes our lessons do not go according to plan - but being transparent in the reflection process can help Ss see that even a flop is a step forward in learning. #LearnLAP
A6:Failure needs to be something that is recognized and discussed as something that can be positive. Students fear failure instead of learn from it. We must model learning as a process rather than an event. Provide options and more opportunity for mastery. Be positive. #learnlap
A6: By talking about what happens when things go wrong for me and how I learn from that. It seems as if models and examples like this can be encouraging for students. #LearnLAP
A6: As a student teacher, I am constantly learning and reflecting as I go. I make mistakes, so why should I expect my students not to? Nobody is perfect, but the thing that matters is how we bounce back after making a mistake. We can either dwell in it or keep going. #learnlap
A2 Gotta love a good hook... a little peek into something that makes one ask a question. Tie that with an interest the Ss have already expressed and they often will dive right in! #learnlap
A4 Reinforce good ideas (or the good parts)! Everyone likes to hear good job. Then ask them to offer a way to improve, or to describe why that is the best idea, and let their own discussion and thought process guide their desire to discover more! #learnlap
A6: We must model our own risk taking. How can our students have a growth mindset if we don’t take risk with our students. I am scared senseless right now with doing #20time for first time. #learnlap
Q6: Curiosity can ultimately lead to risk-taking or even failure by a student. How do you encourage students to embrace a growth mindset when learning doesn’t go according to plan? #learnlap
#learnlap A6: If you had a "plan"...let me introduce you to Ss! Reassessment, reassessment, reassessment. Mastery learning, for me, is THE KEY to a growth mindset.
Q6: Curiosity can ultimately lead to risk-taking or even failure by a student. How do you encourage students to embrace a growth mindset when learning doesn’t go according to plan? #learnlap
A5 As #techdir it's my job to leverage #edtech to enhance classrooms, but I often find myself being taught amazing new things from the teachers throughout the district who are #curious and try new things in the class! I love it when they share! @JeriAsaro@njcybrarian#learnlap
A2 I attempt to spark curiosity in my Ss by exposing them to course content without any assessments in non traditional way: guest speakers, field trips, connecting with community, BYOG (Bring your own Grandparent), hands on approach. #LearnLAP
R3 #LearnLAP students are happier learning about things that interest them and that they have had a say in. Often times even make it harder than I might!
A6: We must model our own risk taking. How can our students have a growth mindset if we don’t take risk with our students. I am scared senseless right now with doing #20time for first time. #learnlap
I share my own failures with my students on projects I have done. I explain what I learned from it and how I fixed it. FAILURE Boards do others can see that everyone fails sometimes. #learnlap
A6: Praise the things that go well. And instead of always saying, "This is wrong!" Encourage them to consider what are some things that would take their assignment to the next level. Use questions and rubrics to guide them to this point. #learnlap
A6: We can't just say we embrace failure and mistakes--it has to be modeled and become part of the classroom culture. Error analyses, allowing mistakes to be projected on the board, "my favorite mistake", etc. This is SO important for math, especially! #LearnLAP
A6 Growth mindset ties into curiosity. You will get there... you're not there YET. How will you get there? What can we do differently? Build them up when they do so you grow both growth mindset but also curious learning #LearnLAP
A6 I make sure I’m always honest w/ my students & own up when I’ve made a mistake. If we model grit, perseverance & growth mindset, they will see & follow! #learnlap
A6: Inquiry clsrms are perfect places to encourage growth mindsets since one is never quite sure what is "according to plan!" Because they accept surprises as being typical & because we continually wonder aloud & pose ?s, Ss become thoughtful reflectors themselves. #LearnLAP
Yes! Excellence is a relentless and never-ending pursuit. Students need to see that we are on this journey with them! #growthmindset#learnlap@ERobbPrincipal

A6: no where is there a comment that says "My students are excited about memorizing facts." Our content areas are gateways to asking more questions. #LearnLAP
A6: Keep encouraging! Just today, I heard someone really smart say to students "When you fail at a video game, you keep playing, you keep trying! Why is school any different?" #LearnLAP
A6:I honestly think we need to rethink how we structure schools. Why would students take risk if they are graded? I wonder if students would take more risk if we stopped grading them #DitchThoseGrades#gradeless#learnlap
A6: Read this in a book recently and thought it fit here: "Courage is doing what you're afraid to do. There can be no courage unless you're scared." #learnLAP
A5. I use Google Classroom to set up digital discussion boards that encourage my shy Ss to discuss. One of the greatest things about tech and the internet is that it allows students to cultivate their own resources: teaching Ss to find reliable sources has been the key. #LearnLAP
A6: it’s important that we model this behavior as teachers. I also think praise goes a long way. Both really stem from the culture in your classroom. #learnlap
A6 it isn't the destination but the journey. It might not even be what we envision, but the part that the students need to see is where they have been ... no road is a dead end just a side tangent. #learnLAP
A4: Open ended questions! Questions that don't simply have "yes" or "no"answers. Questions that are geared towards group discussion sparks creative dialogue. #learnlap
A6: We can't just say we embrace failure and mistakes--it has to be modeled and become part of the classroom culture. Error analyses, allowing mistakes to be projected on the board, "my favorite mistake", etc. This is SO important for math, especially! #LearnLAP
Q4: Asking the right questions can lead students to pursue their own learning. What questions do you ask that tend to spark student curiosity? #LearnLAP
A4: Ques like: What do you think? Wouldn't it be great to find out how that works? Where do you think we should look? Who should be ask? Wouldn't it be great to share that understanding with others? #learnlap#learnlap
A6 I'd argue the best learning is seldom to "plan." We learn when we try something new based on the outcome. Sometimes that's failure, sometimes it's success, but it's always learning. Support Ts and Ss in failure and we will have great successes in our schools! #learnlap
#learnlap A6: Check your grading scheme. If there is no way for a S to remove/replace that single low grade, why should they listen to you about growth mindset?
Much of the curriculum I teach is discussion driven. It is very interesting to hear what they have to say to me and each other. They do sometimes add things they have found through their own research. "The important thing is not to stop questioning." ~Albert Einstein #LearnLAP
A6. In taking risks in classroom, it means trying new things with Ss that you've never attempted, so you learn with the Ss. They see your failures, problem solving, reworking, reattempting, and successes! Ss will feel more encouraged in a safe env. that promtes risks. #learnlap
A6: The little things- when I see a student getting down about failure, I frame it as another chance to succeed. “Okay, great start! Now let’s try it from this angle.” They’ve responded better when given positive reinforcement. #LearnLAP
#learnlap A6 usually Ss r afraid of failure bc/of grade. When Ss want 2 take risk, I tell Ss realize I will work w/them. I encourage the risk! We do a reflection step & and when Ss can tell me how they would change things, I count that thought process in my judgement of the work.
Q6: Curiosity can ultimately lead to risk-taking or even failure by a student. How do you encourage students to embrace a growth mindset when learning doesn’t go according to plan? #learnlap
A6 I think simply stress that learning not going to according to plan is something a normal part of life. Most important is the action you take after a "fail." #LearnLAP
A6: I still love the old FAIL-first attempt in learning. I also@love to share all of the famous failures that became some of the most successful innovators. #LearnLAP
Q6: Curiosity can ultimately lead to risk-taking or even failure by a student. How do you encourage students to embrace a growth mindset when learning doesn’t go according to plan? #learnlap
A7: Simply, things in which I am interested -- disrupting education, baseball history, Bible scholarship, etc... Thankful to live in an age where I have the ability to pursue these things on my own. #LearnLAP
A7: Oh boy...TONS! Since I teach ancient history, students have plenty of questions that I "have to get back to them" on. I get caught in rabbit holes of my own research just to answer my students' questions. #learnlap
So true! If students know they don't have a chance, why would they try? As educators can't be "keepers of the grade." The students need to own it. #LearnLAP
#learnlap A6: Check your grading scheme. If there is no way for a S to remove/replace that single low grade, why should they listen to you about growth mindset?
A7: As an instructional coach, I want to keep exploring BEST practices. Not only related to teaching students, but also teaching teachers. I love blended learning and making lessons more student centered. I am always looking to grow! #LearnLAP
A7 I have a genuine passion for technology... I'm a geek, it's fun for me. For that reason, I'm passionate to keep learning more about it. Twitter is the ultimate resource #LearnLAP
A7: Jumping in late, but I'll say that the nature makes me endlessly curious, leads me to close observation, reading, and research. Plus it brings me peace and joy. A win win win :) #learnlap
A7 I am constantly learning new things, I see something I like and I say to myself I want to learn how to do that! Take a webinar, YouTube, Twitter PLN #Learnlap
A7 What makes me curious is seeing and finding what the Ss can create. The learning process has already been laid out for me, I haven't arrived but it is now about how the next generation can find their own way... #LearnLAP
A7: I'm curious about what I'm passionate about: Education! (And the Cubs, but mostly education!) Thankfully, my district allows me to implement the new ideas I read about in professional books & blog posts, so I feel that the time I dedicate to learning is worthwhile!
#LearnLAP
A7: A desire to leave a purposeful influence and meaningful impact. I want to be Mr. Feeney! I want to explore different avenues of expressing this passion of mine, blogging, music, podcasting, writing, and more to find ways to leave an influence! #learnlap
A3. It is so important to encourage student curiosity because it leads to creativity. This beautiful short film is a wonderful reminder of that power: https://t.co/fuCQxeo1Z7#LearnLAP
A5: We use Thrively to narrow down our interests. They look on DYI projects. I also try to get outside experts to inspire and shark curiosity. @thrively#DYI#learnlap
A3: It is important to encourage curiosity in Ss because it's natural to wonder and ask questions. Show me a kids who doesn't ask "why?" I give my kids the space to ask, voice their truth, and change their minds. It's a part of growing. #LearnLap
A7 I love a good challenge. That paired with things I enjoy helps. For me, it's #edtech and computers. For my Ss, it was #shoes. So we paired that with some #CAD and came up with our own design! Find your interests and you'll find the curiosity! #learnlap
A6: Sharing famous failures and my failures with how we all grow from them helps kids see what being resilient can do. I try things in my classroom and sometimes they don’t go as well as I planned and I ask the kids what should I do differently next year? They ❤️ it!😉#Learnlap
A7: Each day we have to make school amazing. We need to look at our common practices and make them uncommon in order to engage our students and create the experience they'll talk about forever #LearnLAP

A7: Each day we have to make school amazing. We need to look at our common practices and make them uncommon in order to engage our students and create the experience they'll talk about forever #LearnLAP
A7: As a Geometry teacher I’m always asking how can I justify something. It’s important that I know why something works as opposed to simply how. I try to promote that my students strive like this as well. #LearnLAP
A7 I want to explore everything that I hear that can tak my Ss to the next level. Kind of cliche, but I am always searching for something more. My Ss are forever changing, so I want to change and grow with them. #LearnLAP
A6 Ts must model by acknowledging their own mistakes. Celebrate effort and strategies used. Teach mistakes as steps in the learning process. We spend time early in the year developing a team approach where we work & take risks together #LearnLAP
A7: personal mastery drives me to learn. The idea that who we are to be, we are now becoming. It’s really a learner’s mindset. How can I be better today than I was yesterday? #learnlap
By setting up the relationship, by promoting an atmosphere of trust, by drawing them in that makes them wonder, sparks them. Stop feeding them. Make their brains hurt. #LearnLAP
A7 Mostly everything. A librarian is a teacher whose subject is learning itself. I welcome questions. I think it is my responsibility to teach students how to find answers not give answers. #LearnLAP#WALearnLAP

#learnlap A7: R. The stats program. In fact, I have a S whose year end project (rather than take a test or conduct a survey/experiment and analyze it) is to teach me R. He went from total anxiety to sheer joy when I recommended that for his final assessment!
#learnlap A7 In my 40s b4 I became T, I sorta felt new learning wasn’t necess. I flat-lined in that area. I became a T and my life changed. I realized I can do things that I didn’t think were imaginable! Now at 61, I want to literally explore other cultures! Did some, crave more!
A7: I'm curious about what I'm passionate about: Education! (And the Cubs, but mostly education!) Thankfully, my district allows me to implement the new ideas I read about in professional books & blog posts, so I feel that the time I dedicate to learning is worthwhile!

A6 I spend a week giving this presentation to my Ss. Our class motto is"It is ok to fail".Risk taking is encouraged, & failure is an asset. We focus on the process in my classes rather than the final product. Ss are assessed on their reflections. https://t.co/VelbsgsfZX#learnlap
A7: I'm curious about how the Mets will do this year. As for school, I'm always curious about what other schools do as alternatives to detention. #LearnLAP

A8: Critical thinking. Students do not need to know everything, but they should be equipped with tools to find the answers to those circumstances. My hope is that I am preparing my students to think and conquer challenges! #learnlap
A7: Just like my students, I'm motivated to find solutions to problems. This lesson didn't work out- what can I do to make it better? If the solution involves learning a new skill, I'm okay with that, too! Students need curious teachers to lead the way. #LearnLAP
A8 Sounds simple but we have to teach Ss how to think. In a society where you can Google answers...we have to create pathways for Ss to explore! #LearnLAP

#learnlap A8: My "Mathacognition" is all about the process. Ss identify HOW they learned....what conditions work well for them, which don't, and how they can recreate positive conditions. It ain't about the math! Best part: So many have shared that they learn by helping others!

Yes, collaboration is so vital! I went through schooling thinking that someday I would just have to handle things by myself. How wrong was I?! Students need to learn how to work together! #learnlap
