ISEDCoach - a brand new chat for International School Tech coaches or integrators. We will be starting our very first chat on the 22nd of March. Our first topic is Come and join the discussion as we define ourselves as a community and decide on topics for future chats. Follow #isedcoach on Twitter.
For #isedcoach chat we will be using the standard twitter chat question and answer format. Don’t forget the hashtag and include A(question number) when answering. e.g. A1 when answering Q1
Haha. I often say to kids "you wouldn't say it to their face, so why is it ok to say online?" ... I guess some people would say it to your face >.< #isedcoach
A2: Digital Citizenship is just like regular citizenship but with different tools and practices. The core is the same...don't do anything to others you wouldn't want done to you and be safe #isedcoach
I use 2 rules in ES-face to face rule and mom and dad rule. First one is getting at cyberbullying, second at inappropriate online activities. Simple, seems to work. #isedcoach#DigitalCitizenship
A2: As far as a definition, good citizenship is being honest and respectful in all of your communications & interacts, whether in person or online. #ISEdcoach
A2: This has come up a lot in planning meetings. No one wants to own digital citizenship and assumes someone else teaches it. Needs to be touched on in the same way that "unplugged" citizenship is touched on everywhere. #isedcoach
A2 #isedcoach yep agree, even to the point that we don’t need digital use agreements, why are we making special contracts for digital use, when it all just sits under being principled an doing the right thing
A2 #isedcoach They share a lot of similarities but also some important differences. Like, the internet's massive scale and ability for anyone to "have a say". What are our responsibilities with this power?
A2: I feel like it should just be citizenship. A lot of it comes down to behaviors. Different "spaces" (physical & virtual) can require different behaviours but many behaviors transcend all spaces. Plus "online" is also "real life". #isedcoach
A2: A responsible citizen is being a member of a community, a digital citizen or even better a 'responsible digital citizen' has the same premise - a member of a community, and knows the rules and goals associated with it. #isedcoach
A2 for me yes, there are distinctions...however in dealing with kids, their digital lives are such a large part of their daily lives, that the distinctions are becoming slimmer. #isedcoach
A2: In the age of the internet, we are more than just citizens of one country. We are part of a world community. Our online behaviour is the digital representation of ourselves. #behaveasifpeoplearewatching#isedcoach
A2 #isedcoach I believe kids these days hardly differentiate between online and offline ... it is just their being. And that's how it should be approached.
#isedcoach I still think it's necessary to have agreements. If we only say "be principled," not everyone knows that that actually looks like. We need to make it clear (and teach!) what it looks like both f2f and online.
Agree. Especially in early years and elementry edu. These behaviors and thinking needs to be actively modeled and mentored everyday as part and parcel of everyday life. #isedcoach
Do we have agreements for everything? The playground, canteen, library, hallway, classroom A,B,C? What if we just have general agreements (learner profiles) and deconstruct them for each scenario or space? #isedcoach
A3: Our First Program kids are monitored closely & teachers have loads of discussions about behavior; MS we have more direct instruction in our house program. #isedcoach
We have a lot of agreements for different spaces & teams. But we can’t just say, be caring/principled. We have to make clear & transparent what that looks like in different scenarios. #isedcoach
A3 #isedcoach Kids know the “correct” answers to questions about digital citizenship (Everyone chant with me “I would tell the teacher if someone is cyberbullying”) but they don’t always do the right thing. Set up real life situations like inappropriate email for them to practice
A3 I've tried doing the #CommonSenseMedia lessons with classes. Done a few modules. But they don't really sit well with me, too disconnected from other learning. Need to find ways to be more contextual, embedded. #isedcoach
A3: While planning a big project getting teachers to spend a few minutes talking about appropriate use or behavior online - acceptable use, class social social media accounts, communicating with experts and other classes etc #isedcoach
Exactly...looking for opportunities to connect it to units is Key. Also making it less work for teachers when embedding it in is important. It it's ONE MORE THING they may not want to jump on board #ISEdcoach
A3 In addition to what we do with students we've found parent workshops to be super helpful in getting everyone on the same page and giving parents a space to voice concerns and engage in constructive conversations. #isedcoach

Has citizenship (or not), become so intertwined with the digital that we need to directly teach the "hows" of "digital involvement"? Thinking: Fake news, Cambridge Analytica, political polarisation, etc. #ISEDCoach

A3: getting parents involved is also important. If you don't have them involved kids are missing a big chunk of mentoring they could be getting. I like the resources from Common Sense Media and #DeviceFreeDinner#isedcoach
#isedcoach I know, we asked G5 if they would ever share their password online, then I set a fake school gmail account and sent them a google form asking them to share their password about half the class did , as well as one of the teachers. It was a great learning opportunity
Agree, especially when real life gets complicated with friendships. Grade 5 is a tricky phase of life. I have this going on at home at the moment. #isedcoach
A3: 1. #whatTanyasaid 2. Gerry is too fast on the gun--I was going to share that too haha 3. Ideally, I like authentic ways to teach dig cit. I enjoyed using Edmodo with g4 & g5 a few years ago. It gave many opportunities for sts to make mistakes in a safe environment #isedcoach

definitely, agree. There's a reason snapchat and other expiring messaging services exist - partially bc teenagers want to be mean and not get caught #isedcoach
#isedcoach I hear ya, Matt. Disconnected, and also a bit unrealistic! Kids know the “right” answers to tell the teachers, but they don’t always follow them.
We might take that idea for a "Digital Coffee Morning" where among other things our Tech Tree Team can start this with the parents who are there. #isedcoach
A3 like walking across the street, first you practice in the play ground, then hold my hand as we cross the street, then I will watch you cross the street, then you can do it on your own, but I might check back in every once in a while #isedcoach
Same here. We are planning to implement the ISTE Standards for Students and we will start with Digital Citizenship. Partly it is integrated by using @Seesaw but it mostly depends on the teacher. #isedcoach
Modeling how I use my social media accounts with staff, students and parents is helpful. We have tried to get parents involved. We hope to have sessions where students will teach parents how to use IG or Snapchat etc so they’re less afraid of it. #isedcoach#digcit
A4: Engaging with social media in a professional matter - don't just use twitter to troll Trump use it to spread what you're doing and get ideas #isedcoach
A4: Second, by having honest, straight forward discussions with Ts about the importance & need of everybody being responsible for good citizenship. #isedcoach
A4: providing PD that connects with learning already going on. Giving tools and direction for addressing what may arise in class along with approaches to take that are embedded into curriculum #isedcoach
Yep Dave. Agree, too much of this digital citizenship conversation is isolated in schools. It needs to diffuse into homes with parents as kids. It takes a partnership to be effective. #isedcoach And, parents need training too!

Also we find apps like @seesaw, @padlet (with comments) and @Flipgrid help with giving students practice at making appropriate comments. They can make mistakes in a safe environment & learn skills to transfer to their own social media accounts #isedcoach#digcit
A4: Everyone has an important role to play. As coaches here, we have prepared all the required resources, put on the PD, and then teachers take lead. We are then available to support... both teachers and students. #isedcoach
A4: I underestimated how explicit I need to be with teachers. Role-modelling, yip, but also clearly stating how and why I'm sourcing CC0 images, or using a certain social media in a particular way or sharing back to the educommunity... #isedcoach
A4: Also connecting #digcit to tools teachers are using in class already...ie. Seesaw, Flipgrid, Padlet etc. How do we use those to enhance digital citizenship? Sometimes it needs to be somewhat literal #isedcoach
A4 #isedcoach - we also need to make sure we don’t use copyrighted material or say that it is ok for teachers and students to use it “just this one time”.
A4: Especially MS and HS teachers and parents need to understand what is new and what kids are using. Even if you don't get why they like it if you don't understand how it works the kids can get away with more inappropriate behaviour #isedcoach
Modelling! I try to share great things my teachers are doing with a wider audience on social media. The likes/comments they receive help validate the work they are doing. I try to be a positive role model of appropriate online sharing. #isedcoach
Yes. I just relayed the youtube acceptable use policy to a teacher for a video they are creating. She's planning to share it with the kids before they start #isedcoach
Totally...I have started making easy to use posters that appeal to my teachers and students. They like the bit of old school mixed with new ideas. It's also handy to have them in their classrooms. #isedcoach
#isedcoach we found Minecraft was great for this (on our own school server) kids could make mistakes and we could help them identify them and find solutions
In reply to
@klbeasley, @Seesaw, @padlet, @Flipgrid
Oh yeah. So good. We had a #PYPX student researching conflict resolution. He set up 4 computers with Minecraft, had other students enter a set-up conflict situation with different roles, then coached them through a resolution. So cool. #isedcoach

If we (and our kids) have stopped distinguishing the modes of existence (f2f/OL) in a #VUCA world, how are we mindful of how the digital amplifies both the positive & negative? It's so complex. #ISEDCoach#IBATL

By continuing to engage with people from different places and cultures. This is so vital for our children. @Flipgrid & @padlet are so good for this sort of work. #isedcoach
A5 #isedcoach I am really getting into the students using VR for this, putting themselves in someone else shoes and creating resources for others to experience this
"Make it easier to do the better thing" is one of my #HackTheMYP mantras. What do we need to clear out of the way, or stop from feeling 'extra'?
#ISEDCoach A4 #EDTech
A5: Connecting with people from other cultures is the best part of engaging in social media and twitter with students. Takes some work on the T's end but once the connections are made it's great! #isedcoach
Thanks. It worries me at the moment, as an educator and parent. I want to assume that people are innately good, but we need to immunise against external forces. #ISEDCoach.
A5: Making global connections through Twitter classroom connections is great. I also love promoting tools like #seesaw connected blogs and #gridpals with Flipgrid. #isedcoach
A3. Involve parents in building awareness and promoting dig. cit.! "We are all in this", "Now is the time to talk" were some of the messages we communicated to all of our stakeholders as we embarked on the process of becoming a Common Sense School #isedcoach
A5 #isedcoach as students and teachers in international schools I feel we are very lucky we get to interact with people from all over the world, although most of those people are from wealthy / middle class first world countries
A5 Students need to experience what diversity means. Let's use youtube, VR, skype, hangouts, ... social media. And most important, let's ask questions and find the answers. Let's promote asking questions and being critical.
I know that there is a bunch of rubbish on social media, but I want to shine a light on all the great, positive and uplifting things people are doing. The Internet for Good exists, & I want to inspire more of our students & teachers to be a part of it. #isedcoach#digcit
A6: I had a parent session & one of the parents realized & admitted that her behavior on Kakao was a bad example of digital citizenship & she vowed to never do it again. #isedcoach
A6 #isedcoach similar to @tsbray we had a parent session where many parents came to the realisation they were not modelling the behaviours they wanted their kids to. This video helped https://t.co/GNXp0M40Ej
He does not need to know what type of sandwich he is or if he has the highest IQ based on his pizza preferences....I don't know how many times I have told him this #isedcoach
true! which is why I think it's SO important to use digital tools 2 connect classrooms. When our ss travel, they very rarely interact with 'normal' people...instead they go to malls or other touristy places. Need to help them see there are other people just like them. #isedcoach
That is a wrap for #isedcoach chat for April, thank you all for participating and sharing your ideas and thoughts on digital citizenship. See you in May for our last chat of the school year.
