๐ Hi #Ditchbook!
Karly, Tech TOSA and Computer Science teacher from Concord, CA here ๐
SUPER pumped to talk about #DigitalCitizenship ๐ป tonight!
Hey, #ditchbook!! Evan Mosier, Technology Integrationist Lead Teacher and Language Arts teacher from Davenport, IA. Excited to caht about #digcit this evening!
Love this by Matt Miller: "Pedagogy must drive technology. The mindset that fuels digital learning is: good teaching trumps good tools. " #RU#ditchbook
Hey there #ditchbook friends!
Matt here, #ditchbook author/blogger/speaker, 10+yr teacher.
Rolling in after a basketball open gym. I'm a little sweaty, but you can't tell that through Twitter. (Can you?!?) ๐๐๐
Wow! Thanks, Joe! I appreciate the thoughtfulness! It has been an amazing start and I think it's going to be a terrific year! I hope yours is off to an equally amazing beginning! #Ditchbook
Food for thought - #ditchbook - I've started calling it "digital wellness" because it goes SO much deeper than just being a "good citizen" - so much research talks about mental health & social media now - we need to "go there" =)
Congratulations, Scott!!!! I hope you have an amazing day!
You should totally set up a @Flipgrid Topic and let others share their well wishes to you and the lucky other half!! #HappyWifeHappyLife#Ditchbook
Well lookie here, one of my favorite subjects. Jeremy from Connecticut, ready to #DigCitCommit.
A1) Digital citizenship is citizenship in a digital world. So some think we can drop the "digital." #DigCit#DitchBook
A1: #digcit is being a responsible online user to showcase a person's true talents, ability, and creativity without hindering on that reflection of their true self! #Ditchbook
A1: Digital citizenship is citizenship. It is how you represent yourself online, which should be the same as how you represent yourself in person. Good citizenship should be the goal of every S and T. #DitchBook
A1: #DigCit is much more than responsibility with technology. I've seen how positive digital citizenship trickles down into normal social conversations. #DitchBook
A1 Digital Citzenship is no different than regular citizenship today. Being a good decent human being to each other is important whether digital or not. #ditchbook
A1: Digital Citizenship is a conglomerate of many things such as digital literacy, advocacy, cultural norms, online norms, and safety. Being a digital citizen transcends beyond "citizen" especially when it comes to your social groups. #ditchbook
Q2: First! My two favorite books to read! Students love them! My new favorite also is we learn about all topics under digital citizenship and then students create a poster for their โDigital Citizenship Super Powerโ using Google Draw! and I could go on and on #ditchbook
A2- We use @breakoutEDU, @PearDeck, and other engaging activities to help student understand digital citizenship. Our teachers and admin also have on going conversations with ss about digital citizenship.
#Ditchbook
A2: I always post a question every year at the beginning of the school year. It usually has to do with how they are feeling. They can post pics, gifs, words. I use Google Classroom and they learn quickly that they have to be aware of what they post. #ditchbook
A2- I think its also important to have conversations and model it with ss about digital citizenship. Example I like to post pictures of students and their work on twitter. I will always ask the ss if its okay before I do so :)
#Ditchbook
A2. I also use @SimplySuzy Fire off a tweet https://t.co/Rc7cNMmuoA to teach Ss how to use Twitter. We also do paper Instagram and make profiles for characters in books on paper and then connect them to paper twitter and insta #ditchbook
A2: The Be Internet Awesome Curriculum is amazing and highly relevant for students. The#digcit material from @CommonSenseEd is great, too!
Here's a folder of Google Slides/Docs I created to assist in teaching the Be Internet Awesome stuff.

WOW! #Ditchbook is on FIRE ๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฅ
Keep your ๐ on answers for Q2! Some pretty amazing resources being shared!
๐Share yours ANYTIME during the chat!
A2: I love pulling examples of bad digital citizenship and good digital citizenship right off of social media. I try to do famous people, not locals, but if you #MakeItReal to the Ss, they pay attention. Plus I teach HS, so it works. #DitchBook
Yes! Banning and restrictions say "I don't want to teach this." So... do students have the option of saying "I don't want to learn this"? #DigCit#DitchBook
A2. I love common sense media as a solid base. This year I introduced terms and the idea of using tech to problem solve and create using the book Doll-e 1.0 #DigCit#DitchBook
A3- Having conversations with ss and looking for ways to add it into daily life. Example citing a photo or quotes and modeling the importance of giving credit!
#Ditchbook
A2. Had Ss write a deep dark secret on sticky note in dark pencil then erase it. Idea that once it was online it's there forever really stuck when I pretended to collect and begin reading the notes outloud... #Ditchbook
A3 - When looking at a website, checking email, or creating a positive social presence just having a quick conversation about the importance and what to look for!
#Ditchbook
A3: Using varied digital tools every day in real situations with students, e.g. emails and chats, then using that as an opportunity to teach and correct if Ss don't use proper etiquette. #Ditchbook#DigitalCitizenship#digCit
Food for thought - #ditchbook - I've started calling it "digital wellness" because it goes SO much deeper than just being a "good citizen" - so much research talks about mental health & social media now - we need to "go there" =)
A3: We are always pushing our students to be the best citizens offline, why would it be different online? Hold them to the same high expectation on and offline. #ditchbook
MODEL it every day! Praise students when you see them being a good digital citizen, share real life examples, and make sure you blend Digital Citizenship into every lesson by offering students opportunities to be Digcits by creating online. Model, teach, and praise! #ditchbook
A3 Schools are going to have to loosen the reigns a little bit. My school bans Google Sites because they are scared we will not be able to "monitor" what they post. If we do not teach our Ss digital citizenship who will? #ditchbook
A3 I am really focusing on asking my students to look for ways to use technology to improve their community - seeing tech as a tool for social good - rather than warning about the dangers and darkside. I want them to LEAD with technology #Ditchbook
A2: Love the story @gcouros tells about a former student applying to a college and telling admission officer to "Google" me to see the great things I've done. #Ditchbook
A3: Just like anything we teach with procedures or SEL, there are big things that we need to hit and pound frequently, & things we can drip throughout the year to fill that citizenship bucket. My HS is 1:1 so Ss need to get a handle on this bucket ASAP. #DitchBook
A3: #digcit should be taught cross-curricular and not just in a homeroom or AP class. Each time a student has to search for an image, remind them about #digcit. Each time they have to be online for research, interject #digcit information. All classes, all the time. #Ditchbook
A3: By explaining to Ss that it is really just being a good citizen! If we can show them that itโs the same online as it is in person, they may connect and carry it with them #ditchbook
A3: We are always pushing our students to be the best citizens offline, why would it be different online? Hold them to the same high expectation on and offline. #ditchbook
A3: My first graders have heard me talk about #DigCit since day 1. They're no longer afraid to make mistakes b/c they know that w'll learn more from those answers than the correct ones. #DitchBook
A3: Needs to be explicitly taught esp to elem Ss who don't have access at home. Try to incorporate as much as you can...how to leave feedback/comment, critique, how we respond to others, protect p-words via #googleclassroom and other platforms for school #ditchbook
It REALLY hurts when people attack you online. I'm sorry that happened to you. You are an incredibly wonderful person and definitely do NOT deserve that. #Ditchbook
Easy: Incorporate tech into the school as much as possible!
OK, nothing's easy, but the point is: Tech is obviously the means to teach. Let them gain experience and make mistakes. #DigCit#DitchBook A3
It is the future! I always tell them their digital footprint follows them all the way until they get my grandmas age! They connect with that! It is important for us as educators to cultivate the next generation of Digital Citizens! #ditchbook
A4 Essential - some of our kids are more "alive" online than IRL. They need to know how to manage the digital world so they can have healthy lives. #ditchbook
A2 #ditchbook I think any activity which can start pk and also engage parents is awesome. Also having student led training in class is powerful - kids teaching kids
A4: Just as importantly any type of good citizenship we want to see. To succeed in the future, all aspects of good citizenship must be present. #ditchbook
A4; When journalists and people all over are fired for digital citzenship mistakes, it is imperative that Ss pay attention now rather than later. Ss also need to see how good dig cit can elevate their game/brand and open doors of opportunity for them. #DitchBook
A4 It's always out there. I don't think kids of even a LOT of adults realize that what you put out there online never really goes away =( We can choose to build a POSITIVE online rep though. #Ditchbook
I used to blog and tweet live in front of my students. I would let them see the process often so they could hear and see my thinking as I posted. #ditchbook
A4: Share negative examples like Buffalo Bills QB Josh Allen's racist tweets and how it could his ability to connect with pro teammates. Same for former Villanova basketball player Donte Devincenzo. #Ditchbook
A4. Paramount. From trolling in chats/comments to fake news to bots/AI, they online world is a wild wild west that empties into "real" life. They have to be better than us at living digitally #Ditchbook
A4. Thinking long term, students need to understand the impact of digital citizenship because future employers in any field check social media and Google for info before hiring! #Ditchbook
A2- I think its also important to have conversations and model it with ss about digital citizenship. Example I like to post pictures of students and their work on twitter. I will always ask the ss if its okay before I do so :)
#Ditchbook
A4: It IS the future. As more and more jobs become digital, Ss need to understand that they are held to the same high standards online as in person. Teaching that to them early only aids in this as they get older and advance in their schooling and careers. #Ditchbook
A4: As a society, we have poorly prepared students to be responsible with technology. I am pushing hard for primary ages students to have a #DigCit program. If we can educate them at this age, we'll catch them early enough so that they know how to behave "digitally." #ditchbook
The positive online rep is the point of @gcouros story about former student using social presence to try and gain college admission. #ditchbook
Hi Karly!!!
A4 It's always out there. I don't think kids of even a LOT of adults realize that what you put out there online never really goes away =( We can choose to build a POSITIVE online rep though. #Ditchbook
A4: when I think of the importance of citizenship & literacy in our world today they are even more relevant to our studentsโ future once we add DIGITAL to each! We could all use some of that! #DitchBook
A4 I think in some ways it is a matter of life and death -- managing the digital world can be crucial. I don't want one more suicide over something someone posted online #ditchbook
A4 As we watch the news and Twitter feeds and all social media it is really important. Just think how better off our social media world would be if people had to go to a Digital Citizenship class before they were allowed to open a Social app! #ditchbook
A4. I think #digcit with empathy and compassion are vital for our Ss future. As one wise students told me many years ago "There is no font for sarcasm." @mbkimchee#ditchbook
A4: Itโs truly more important everyday! So much of our world is moving to the digital world so itโs crucial our Ss (and adults) know how to responsibly maneuver through it! #ditchbook
I love this! Digital wellness is vital. Eg we built wellness into https://t.co/KEpDXSj2YE by rewarding the likes students give... not the ones they get! Stops it being a popularity contest and inset drives through empathy. Amazing impact. #ditchbook
It is so important. Social media is such a large part of their lives, I don't think they realize the digital footprint that they have when they leave school. #Ditchbook
๐ Thank you #ditchbook family! Another great chat ๐ฌ is in the books! ๐
