A1 I think probing Qs are some of the most important. The whys & tell me mores deepen thinking and understanding.
Good evening! Stephanie from MO.
A1) Most important questions for students:
1. Did you get enough sleep last night?
2. Did you eat a high protein breakfast w/ water?
A1 A Q we can ask students...
What do you believe about yourself?
A1: what are you passionate about? Why do you feel that way? How can I help you reach that?
A1 What have you tried? What can to do now? Do less talking so Ss can do more of the work
Hi Margie from PA. Happy to be here
A1 A Q we can ask students...
What is learning?
Beate from Toronto pleased to connect!
A1:What do you think? Why do you think so?Can you share more about_?How is _similar to _? How are they different? How do you know that
Absolutely! Come right out and ask these questions... often.
https://t.co/FnKb6cMAsy
A1: what are you passionate about? Why do you feel that way? How can I help you reach that?
Ryan. 4th grade teacher from Indiana.
A4. We should teach kids to be comfortable with struggle, bc it is out of struggle the best results are achieved!
A1 What are the things you fear the most? How much confidence do you have in yourself? Do u see yourself successful? KNOW about them
Out of powerful struggle comes powerful learning! https://t.co/1v5HRkkDtH
A4. We should teach kids to be comfortable with struggle, bc it is out of struggle the best results are achieved!
A1: What are your passions?
A1 WHAT r you interested in? r u passionate about? would u like 2 learn more about? problems do u want 2 solve? do u want to share?
How are you? What do you think? How can we work together? What do I need to know about you? What are you passionate about?
A1 How do you learn best? Do you like to see, hear or do new things?
Powerful question elicit insight and provide context for building relationships, too! Nice!
https://t.co/fsa2C0GPdV
A1 What are the things you fear the most? How much confidence do you have in yourself? Do u see yourself successful? KNOW about them
A1 Did you change your way of thinking? How would change things if you could do it all over?
A1: Tell me about yourself and your family. I ask, 'What interests you?'
Annie Brock from Holton, Kansas
A1 What do you want to learn more about?
A1: The things I asked: What are 3 likes, 3 dislikes, place you'd like to travel, 3 words that describe you, & 3 of your favorites
A1: What are the steps you need to take to reach your goals?
A1 I was told a girl carrying a book joined all in a room. Instead of saying she looked pretty she was asked what she was reading.
A1: Getting to know them is so important!
Yes! Give them options on learning. Some Ts forget that. Went through it many times. I had fear! https://t.co/B8auCElbDT
A1 How do you learn best? Do you like to see, hear or do new things?
I like this strategy. Love that you asked for 3 in multiple categories. https://t.co/VnXiqU0Ud2
A1: The things I asked: What are 3 likes, 3 dislikes, place you'd like to travel, 3 words that describe you, & 3 of your favorites
A1: I also have them write down their passions, and what add to the "I wonder..." board
A1 what can you do if you don't understand something? What are some strategies to help yourself. How are you today?
A1: What connects to learning?
Students who produce language produce learning.
https://t.co/Niiwf7AOSF
A1: I also have them write down their passions, and what add to the "I wonder..." board
A1: How are you breathing life into the learning environment?
A1 Why are you proud of you?
It's about BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS first! Everyone is different. https://t.co/sm8GEWnF9n
A1: Tell me about yourself and your family. I ask, 'What interests you?'
Great concept of thinking about our thinking ahead of time. https://t.co/9xLsc6mHqT
A1 what can you do if you don't understand something? What are some strategies to help yourself. How are you today?
A1
The most important Q we can direct to our Ss is ‘How do you know this?'
Wouldn't this be a great standing question to have students answer each and every day?
https://t.co/uKb6qSQUAU
A1 Why are you proud of you?
A1: What brings you ? You can tap into their passions and make connections from that question.
A2 If we teach Ss how to learn, their lifelong learning is unlimited.
How can I assist you today?
Tell me about something you did recently that you will remember? What was it about this experience that meant a lot to you?
It is foundational! It's not only sparking that fire to learn but knowing that you need to keep it going https://t.co/U2wvSdAReC
Relationships!
Learning is about Making Connections. https://t.co/goGMoJ25Al
It's about BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS first! Everyone is different. https://t.co/sm8GEWnF9n
A1: Tell me about yourself and your family. I ask, 'What interests you?'
A1: With & have really tried to focus on how kids approach learning & handle failure. Many are non-strategic
A2:Teaching Ss how 2 learn is as important as subject.Ss need 2 know when learning happens;the how&when. So they can do it again
Hey there! Happy to jump aboard tonight. I teach math at an independent k12 day and boarding school in NE PA
A2 Important for Ss to be creators and consumers of Knowledge. Don't want learning to be limited to the school building.
A2 teachers need to model a love of learning and share how they learn best too.
A2: When Ss understand the PROCESS of learning, success or failure is tied w/ the process, not a reflection of them as a person.
Give them language to describe learning, what it looks, feels, sounds like to learn, may not always be success, may include failure
Learning about learning itself is extremely important! https://t.co/E3LA6NgtF8
A2:Teaching Ss how 2 learn is as important as subject.Ss need 2 know when learning happens;the how&when. So they can do it again
A2: if they understand that learning is an interconnected process they see that the skills they utilize span all aspects of life.
A2: Ss need to understand that learning takes time and practice... that nothing is fixed and that they can grow, change and master.
A2 We are always on a journey of learning that never stops, it will always be part of Ss lives,
A2 Paula from Ky. Learning is ongoing, it's part of our day and our life forever.
A2: Understanding the why helps Ss find relevance and make connections to their learning.
A2 Thinking about your thinking promotes learning
These questions build community. https://t.co/kgIlsQilnj
How are you? What do you think? How can we work together? What do I need to know about you? What are you passionate about?
Learning facts is a temporary gain.Learning about learning, being aware of what learning IS-these are lifetime skills
A2: sometimes Ss perception of learning has already been skewed, teaching them what potential learning can have can be amazing
Questions that allow students the space and place to dream:) https://t.co/SH5Bx72Kq5
A1 WHAT r you interested in? r u passionate about? would u like 2 learn more about? problems do u want 2 solve? do u want to share?
A2 So Ss understand learning isn't automatic. We sift & sort what we learn, how we use it etc based, in part, on significance 2 us.
A2 Model the and the value of . Great learning comes from mistakes.
A2: Learning how to learn & self-assessment is critical to achieving success. It is the key to
The concept of learning cannot be separated from the idea of potential. https://t.co/WdKrWVMEVX
A2: sometimes Ss perception of learning has already been skewed, teaching them what potential learning can have can be amazing
Learning involves discomfort, being OK with that and stay grounded
There are SO MANY powerful insightful answers. Thank you for fueling us all!
If we can conquer that fear of early failure by instilling an idea of perseverance there are no limits
Huge statement here about significance. Ushering our Ss to the point where learning feels significant, that’s the goal!
A2 When children learn how to learn education truly becomes their journey!
I'm always determined to learn more about learning itself.
A2: Learning has to be unpacked so real strong bridges can be made by the Ss to their connections. https://t.co/xDSbmUsVmc
A2 learning includes making connections in a safe environment
So, you are determined to learn more about yourself and about the world around you. That’s what learning is, right?!?
A2 We live and breathe learning. The better we understand it the more powerful our students become.
A2: Teaching kids how our neural connections strengthen as we practice gives them a visual to associate with their hard work.
A1 Any question that allows them to think or form/share an opinion.stems "What do you think about...." & "Why do you suppose...."
A2:it is transferable into anything they do in life. Knowing how they learn best, what they need to be mindful of are so important.
learning doesn't include comparing self to others... it is comparing self to self
A2 Also important for students to understand as they can then give voice when they don't understand, we give them language to do so
the life long learner. now we need Ts to adopt that thinking as well. If they see us love to learn so will they.
A2 Kids need to be able to experience and talk about productive struggle....the stuff of growth.
A CHALLENGE
Talk to your students tomorrow about the meaning of learning.
A1
Another vital Q to ask our Ss is to have them try to reframe/rephrase another Ss explanation of something in class discussion
We we give students voice, we also give them a means to explore what they are in the midst of learning. https://t.co/BK7v9Cfnzs
A2 Also important for students to understand as they can then give voice when they don't understand, we give them language to do so
A2: When we don't know how learning happens it seems like magic. Teaching Ss how to learn puts them in control.
Great point! The articulation of another student's thinking requires many important layers of learning. https://t.co/csw6g49Fbl
A1
Another vital Q to ask our Ss is to have them try to reframe/rephrase another Ss explanation of something in class discussion
So that students will become self directed learners and take charge of their own education. https://t.co/1ACSCwlni8
A3 Learning is figuring out the world around you and how to make sense of it all.
all about mindfulness- self-awareness and self-regulation- game changer! https://t.co/sryd8NNI9v
A2:it is transferable into anything they do in life. Knowing how they learn best, what they need to be mindful of are so important.
A3 Simply put, finding out something you didn't know before.
A2 When children learn how to learn, education truly becomes their journey! Our goal is to set them up for a lifetime of curiosity!
A3a: Learning is when we make sense of something, can explain it in our own words &can apply newly learned material in a new setting
A3: Learning is when meaning, relevance, and understanding come together to create a passion or need to share with others.
A3b: There is some change as a result of learning.
I could spend a whole chat sharing jewels from this book!
A2 They need to know that LEARNING is LIFE. Whether it's school, a job. We all need learning.
This is a surprising question for some educators to hear.
I really appreciate these insightful answers!
A wonderful endless cycle of being periodically satisfied, only to be hungry shortly again for more. https://t.co/uVqIpfKhce
What Margie said! https://t.co/xSnEaVBGnT
A3a: Learning is when we make sense of something, can explain it in our own words &can apply newly learned material in a new setting
Learning can never be contained within any walls.
https://t.co/ktTaFo5Nzo
A2 They need to know that LEARNING is LIFE. Whether it's school, a job. We all need learning.
A3 Learning occurs when we make meaning of the knowledge we acquire through processing and skills we build
A3 Learning is more than just acquiring knowledge. It's about being so changed by that knowledge that we want to take action!
A3: Learning is removing fear of change, growth, making mistakes and effort
A3:acknowledging you need something and seeking it. Realizing you may not know what you don't know.
A3 Powerful learning also happens during times of reflection.
A3: I think in its simplest form, "learning" is evolving into a better you.
A3 Learning builds confidence in our ability to deal with our lives and futures.
learning is realising that you dont know
We are constantly having new experiences, relating them to developing paradigms.
Welcome! We are discussing "What is learning?"
A3:Learning is about making connections. These can be to our prior learning or by disequilibrium. Causing a search for meaning.
self-reflection is key, get kids involved and lead parent teacher conferences... https://t.co/cndc8fjPm3
A3 Powerful learning also happens during times of reflection.
That is such a powerful realization. Not knowing should be embraced.
A3 So Ss understand that they are truly in charge of their learning. It's not magic or innate ability, but disposition & hard fun.
Yes, that is a powerful practice. Providing time, and understanding of how to begin... and more time is imp.
A3 Learning is the acquisition of skills, the processing of thought, and the growing/synthesizing of the brain
Learning is intentional. Making connections is best when we deliberately make them ourselves. https://t.co/HseuLT4pWh
A3 So Ss understand that they are truly in charge of their learning. It's not magic or innate ability, but disposition & hard fun.
A3. learning -2way flow of info absorption - from the outsource (teacher, website, etc), to the end user (student), & then reverse
A3 I think learning is effortful.
Learning is what results when you feed your natural human curiosity. The more you feed it, the more insatiable it becomes!
yes! Also, if we can then teach others what we just learned.
Our paradigms and our experiences interact with each other.
Accelerated when we reflection and prod. lang. https://t.co/thtDZs1QwQ
A3. learning -2way flow of info absorption - from the outsource (teacher, website, etc), to the end user (student), & then reverse
A4: Beautiful questions come from struggling with an idea. Growth and creativity come from the struggle https://t.co/p0gMLyzhOA
It forces you to address the thought from all angles. Critical thinking skills are so important to develop. https://t.co/lc2UX1J6On
A4 The struggle is good. Causes you to reevaluate & make changes. The saying no pain no gain applies here.
A2. VB,VA Sch Couns chiming in!I teach bio of the brain-gives a concrete understanding of neural connections https://t.co/pB5LCtwooM
but in order for it to be "hard fun" we need to create an environment where they are not penalized for learning.
a4 When we work out we build muscle, when we provide Ss productive struggle it's workout for the brain
A4: the struggle is where the magic happens, on the threshold of growth, beautiful if one can embrace it, that is courage
ah, I like the term 'hard fun', it conveys quite a bit
A4: When we struggle w/an idea, we get up-close & see it in different ways. Up-close, we can't help but be changed by the idea.
love how you stated this!
A4 Struggling with an idea can lead you to new discoveries, looking at things in different ways, and also seeing what you're made of
A4 Struggling teaches us not to give up and builds perseverance. It helps develop life skills like patience.
A4:nothing easy is worth having. Hard work makes you appreciate the end goal.
Ss discovering knowledge through hands on experiences and the teacher acting as a facilitator. https://t.co/jeuGhbbaFh
I so absolutely agree, learning is not about "smarts" but effort
Struggle amplifies clarity.
https://t.co/J1oMB11a5G
A4: When we struggle w/an idea, we get up-close & see it in different ways. Up-close, we can't help but be changed by the idea.
Kristin from California arriving late! Better late than never right?!
Really a very reassuring statement for Ss and Ta when we embark on something new
So true. learning can come out of the struggle. Ss learn to be resilient https://t.co/fmAOPFgnbT
A4: the struggle is where the magic happens, on the threshold of growth, beautiful if one can embrace it, that is courage
A3.expanding networks of information and creating new routes between concepts. Fascinating!! https://t.co/8a3mTTYI9k
A1: Tell me about what you like to do? & How can I be the best teacher for you?
A4 Struggle can be productive, builds perseverance, thinking skills, cognitive growth if the struggle takes place in a safe place.
I think our most worthy and intriguing ideas quickly become shared, and in the sharing they grow. https://t.co/oSDbGApj5E
Not even the walls of our skull?
I wonder if we could also describe these things by what it is not?
A4 Struggking with an idea makes you analyze the situation from all angles, this is when creative juices flow
I like the relational approach! https://t.co/qsfIuffdwl
A1: Tell me about what you like to do? & How can I be the best teacher for you?
Have to step away. Thanks for the great learning
Thanks all!
A2: Ss need to recognize that learning is the foundation to everything in life!
That is a really, really good approach.
Ask them what is stopping them. What are their personal barriers to achieving greatness?
A4 Struggle is the point where we learn.
Necessity: the mother of invention. As Ss struggle to solve probs or overcome challenges, new strategies, ideas, thoughts are born.
A4. Struggling with an idea allows many views to invade your thoughts and confront your preconceived ideas about things.
A3: Learning is figuring out the answer, asking questions & searching
struggling w/ idea means looking at something from 2 sides: side built from previous notions & a side being shaped by new thoughts
Q4 Struggle makes us stronger! There is such joy to be experienced in the accomplishment of not giving up! https://t.co/icxVvygV9h
Arriving at a point where many viewpoints are valued is such a gift. https://t.co/vSGQMclHMb
A4. Struggling with an idea allows many views to invade your thoughts and confront your preconceived ideas about things.
A3: learning is also failing forward, building confidence & figuring out who we are
thank you so much! 😊 learning is never ending, but more self-perpetuating than just a long road.
Struggle is very useful when it causes us to think more widely, and from multiple vantage points. https://t.co/lsyxkEIoqY
struggling w/ idea means looking at something from 2 sides: side built from previous notions & a side being shaped by new thoughts
I'm sorry but have to go, a busy day tomorrow. Thanks for great questions, always important to reflect
A4 Struggle can lead us to the gift of not knowing... of wondering more deeply.
A4: to struggle forces us to look at a problem from all sides, which in turn makes us better learners
A4: State of confusion causes new meaning to be sought and our old ideas to be revised. Deeper meaningful learning then takes place.
Ts need to guide Ss through the struggle with grace, comapssion and non-judgement - we need to light the way
You build empathy when you struggle too. Sometimes it forces you to think of the who else involved. https://t.co/NdWl9IA8fb
Struggle is very useful when it causes us to think more widely, and from multiple vantage points. https://t.co/lsyxkEIoqY
struggling w/ idea means looking at something from 2 sides: side built from previous notions & a side being shaped by new thoughts
A4.The struggle is tension b/t 2+ pieces of info, exploring those ideas to work through it expands knowledge https://t.co/n8kDI8rqJy
A5 Learning happens when one idea or concept is built upon another. Applications made when dots connected.
a5 connections w/peers, connections w/T, connections of and to concepts
A4: If something is too easy is it really worth doing? Iron sharpens iron
I often hunger for the kinds of questions that will do this.
Even more for students to discover those Q's. https://t.co/vfbaX7FstV
A4: to struggle forces us to look at a problem from all sides, which in turn makes us better learners
A4: Struggling with an idea means constantly searching for and making connections.
A5: When we learn we put new ideas into our "filing system." When we file ideas with like ideas, the ideas can be retrieved later.
thank you! I saw your tweet and should have included you here! Learning isn't *just* a path https://t.co/kfRdhxrAlb
thank you so much! 😊 learning is never ending, but more self-perpetuating than just a long road.
A5 Making C's to ideas, and to other people and topics All of the world is connected &finding the Cs makes Learning +meaningful
A5 I think first about connections between people, then between ideas - co-creating community and individual realities.
A4; Causes Ss and Ts to search deeper than the obvious, stretching our creativity muscles
A4 Productive struggle teaches perseverance. As T's we should encourage and facilitate students through this process
Being brought to a point of struggle means we have to make new kinds of connections to resolve it. https://t.co/FerwpkycWS
A4: Struggling with an idea means constantly searching for and making connections.
It's not necessary for struggle to be conquered in a single class period.
Lingering struggle is valuable.
A4: Few things of value come without struggle. Cognitively, it takes time & effort to integrate experiences into new concepts
Signing out enjoyed the dialogue!
A5: connections can be the synapses & the relationships we develop during the learning process
Yes, tt is refreshing to ponder. Some of my deepest reflections lead to questions. https://t.co/JSexT4FxhT
It's refreshing to ponder. All thinking shouldn't have to end in an answer.
The literal: new synapses in the brain. The figurative: piecing together info. The social: sharing like in ! https://t.co/ozHlf6B2mg
Thanks & for the great chat. Need to get ready for tomorrow. I'll join in the slow chat during the week. Good night!
A5:this is the joy of the "pinball effect" Ss think they have no connections but when they find them learning is infectious.
A5 "Realizing if and how this applies to me" is a predictor of how or if we make connections to our past or present awareness.
Thank you . Time for me to check out. 5am comes quickly!
It really is infectious. The electric nature of excitement in the classroom.
A5 Learning is more meaningful when it connects us to each other and to the world. That's really what it's all about anyway!
My kids spent - oh, a good half an hour yesterday just generating new unit questions. Several didn't want it to end.
There is an important element in teaching students to seek and identify context in their learning.
A5: In learning, our brain makes connections between events, organizes experiences into higher order thinking
Let's take a look at Q6...
A5: connection to self, inner wisdom leads to authentic connection to others, new ideas, comfort w/in creates comfort with learning
once those circuits are formed they lead to amazing things, those Lightbulb moments.
A5: Making connections to further learning is best done not in isolation, but with the help of others.
agreed!👍 It's like the saying "give a man a fish, feed him for a day. Teach him to fish & feed him for a lifetime."
As we share our learning, we learn more about our own ideas. https://t.co/U2AW3Cl6Ye
A5: Making connections to further learning is best done not in isolation, but with the help of others.
We can teach students ideas, but we can also teach them to learn how to learn.
A5 The learning web is powerful, strong & steady. The connections build upon each other, but stay linked in sync and open for more.
A6: Relationships are about trust. When we trust we r willing to take risks. When we take risks we learn.
Relationships among ideas is very important.
Building relationships with students is critical.
using multiple parts of human nature as inspiration for teaching- I like it!! https://t.co/5ACnVgmanW
A5 Learning is more meaningful when it connects us to each other and to the world. That's really what it's all about anyway!
A6 There is real power in building that relationship letting students know that you believe in them. https://t.co/SvTyuiO15t
A6: we often need that bit of support to push us through. An idea is okay, a shared idea can pull from the collective and grow.
relating to oneself with kindness leads to open mind relating to others, my amount of trust toward you is equal to the trust within
This is a great explanation
https://t.co/9Yhmo2U3Ip
A6: Relationships are about trust. When we trust we r willing to take risks. When we take risks we learn.
A5 Learning is truly a cyclical process of connecting prior knowledge/ experiences to new concepts/skills via collaboration w/ peers
Without human relationships, learning descends into data. Powerful teachers connect with Ss, inspire them to learn
A6 Everything starts with a relationship. It helps us put things in order.
in Middle school, relationships are the determinate of whether students strive beyond the norm, they work for "that" teacher.
without those very relationships it's difficult to be relevant.
A6: relationships are what get us through life, whether it's w/ a higher source or your BFG!
The deeper meaning of "Learning is about making connections." https://t.co/o56cgECg6R
A6 Everything starts with a relationship. It helps us put things in order.
A6:validation is powerful.
a6 building relationship w/Ss fosters Ss thinking, having Ss build relationships fosters their connections, in both cases=learning
A6We learn best from each other, shared experiences, & by building upon those relationships collaboratively. Support is nice to have
A6: Article on grading & relationships. Inspired me to change some thinking about power of collaboration https://t.co/KF1tftqNoQ
So true! Relationships are vital. https://t.co/Qy3yNjCEu8
A6: relationships are what get us through life, whether it's w/ a higher source or your BFG!
A7, showing students that I'm still learning & modeling how to ask ??s and explore answers reveals authenticity & value of that act
relationships among and btwn peers is huge to Ss success, likewise btwn Ss and T
A6 relationships are the start to learning as trust is essential, without it your just talking in an empty room
A6 S's who struggle with relationships struggle with learning.
I love the relationships I make w/my Ss. I have been invited to weddings, games, showers, & parties years later!
As students see into our learning, they see more clearly into their own learning.
https://t.co/G34K5Z4LW7
A7, showing students that I'm still learning & modeling how to ask ??s and explore answers reveals authenticity & value of that act
Sorry I missed tonight's chat! Was at a meeting at school and I just got home! I'll check it out later! https://t.co/p4YrU3QbgL
A7 I adopting an exit slip w/lichert scales depicting how they monitor their learning, & clear, simple sent intro the learning
Content is meaningful, but the kids mean more. Their uniqueness, what makes the souls tick. Serve them first always!
A7 Model with my own learning, let them see me question and seek answers, let them see the real learning and me failing forward
It's pretty fun to see those life events unfold!
model myself as a learner & reinforce learning isn't always about winning or being the best, it may be as simple as trying again
A6 Kids need to feel loved, safe, respected, and valued!Once those things are established, learning happens! https://t.co/PxGLLdUaM5
A7:allow them to see that I do not have all the answers, but I am willing to take the risk to find them.
It's a new learning I'm currently exploring and loving it
A7: Learn right along w/them! Content may be the same every year but the Ss aren't! Thank goodness
Our learning...
often becomes a valuable part of our students' learning.
https://t.co/bjDXaxs6gM
A7 Model with my own learning, let them see me question and seek answers, let them see the real learning and me failing forward
A7: Share my learning struggles with Ss; model mathematical thinking; & engage Ss in shared struggles like tasks.
A6 A safe learning environment for our S's cultivates trust, encourages risk taking, ideas 2 spark and that's where magic can happen
Learning is about making connections!
How we think AND especially how we build relationships with others.
A7 Be there for your ss. Build relationships, support sys, &trust while linking their learning to meaningful real world experiences.
If the Ss trust in your care, attitude, and love for them, then they will trust you in the content, take risks w/ you
So true, and I'm impressed, this is the 1st use of I've seen, very cool
Makes us feel kind of proud. Graduation especially chokes me up.
