It is ironic to see all the advanced degrees in , and yet many of us are about to be laid off by legislators with much less education
do you have to be a classroom teacher to be national board certified?
A1) I am not board certified b/c in CA the benefit of it wasn’t explained. I’ve met more Ts here in OK who are NBCT than in CA.
Not sure on that one - you had to have classroom experience. 3 years i think..
A1) Encouragement by colleagues that were NBCTs. Respect for them and hopes to shape the profession.
A1: I'm strongly considering it in addtion to my MM.Ed, if you have done it please share your experiences!
Nathalie Henderson, M.Ed, Ed.S & Ph.D former Sped teacher now ILD in
A1)I am not yet but I am doing it because of the growth and meaning.
A1- not board cert yet, but chose it bc of scholarship. Nat'l board increases pay just like masters, without student loan debt
Michelle Grinsteiner, M.Ed and Former NBCT EA Science
OK USED to be in the Top 5; now we've slipped to Top 10 in numbers of
A1: Great opp. to take a good hard look at my practice. Culture is in place in my district. Very rewarding.
right - you have to video yourself teaching w/different classroom constructs.
A1. I came from out of state as well, and never heard of nbct until I got here. https://t.co/8e2UORKSq6
A1) I am not board certified b/c in CA the benefit of it wasn’t explained. I’ve met more Ts here in OK who are NBCT than in CA.
Oops! Running late, ! Christie Paradise, Mid-Del.
Lloyd Snow SS supt. Lurking again
A1: I'm going for it because it seems like a reflective process that could only benefit my Ss.
A1) wanted to be a better teacher and of course the money was a great incentive.
A1 Wanted to go through the process to reflect on my practices and become a better teacher. The money was also an incentive.
Yes! I'm planning to attend on Saturday, Jan.30.
I'm lurking and learning tonight.
I have chosen the process because I want to reflect on my actual classroom practice and become a better teacher.
I agree, but you can get the masters without debt as well
A1 -- in the 'old days,' the idea of contributing to my family AND staying in the classroom I loved was a huge draw.
A1) I am, and it chose me. :) Being alt cert, I was looking for what to do and I had a fabulous mentor going through the process.
stinking funding….Nevermind the amazing teacher growth...
Q2. If you have earned your Master’s degree, but are not an , why did you choose that route? https://t.co/jgEGVDF5NW
Rob Reck - Retired music educator, blogger, and ray of sunshine.
We look forward to your visit ! We appreciate your support of !!! https://t.co/kIpmQcwJDf
Yes! I'm planning to attend on Saturday, Jan.30.
A1- Chose NBCT because of money & veteran teacher convinced me it was best reflective practice and growth for me as a young teacher.
Wanted to get into administration
You stole my answer because YOU are my answer!
Just saying.. , anyone interested in MS Ed, EdD or PhD from , happy to get you to the right people! DM me! :)
A2: I got my Masters immediately after by BA. I was in Student Mode. Now that I'm teaching, I see the benefit of NBC.
A2) When I did my certification prgrm it was embedded with a Master’s degree and CLAD certification. The pay was more too.
A2 -- My masters is in secondary reading. 2nd yr of teaching, I taught 'reading' wo a clue. I needed2 learn! Be a better teacher.
A2 The master's program I chose helped me get my teaching certificate, seemed like a good combo! https://t.co/AaDNaNIHhP
Q2. If you have earned your Master’s degree, but are not an , why did you choose that route? https://t.co/jgEGVDF5NW
Good evening ! I'm following along tonight! - Rep. Wood, Shawnee
A2: The Masters I'm getting ties directly into making me a better musician and a better teacher of musicians.
Does anyone have a master's in English Education? How did that help in your classroom practice?
A2. Wanted to be an administrator so chose M.Ed. If staying in classroom, I would have chosen NBCT.
A2 My family was on WIC & Sooner Care. It was my only route to stay in education and provide more for them. https://t.co/DnMUnM6B0Z
Q2. If you have earned your Master’s degree, but are not an , why did you choose that route? https://t.co/jgEGVDF5NW
I’m not going to say I enjoyed the entire process - but wow - it made a difference!
It's always good to see new faces! Welcome!
A2) Admin masters gave me insight in every aspect of how a school works. Get to see teaching through principal's viewpoint now.
Always great to have legislator(s) and the state super join
A2 Admin opportunities. is an amazing program!
A2) I have never thought of it as an either/or. I have a master’s and going for NBCT. I’m in the learning/growing business
True statement right here! https://t.co/c8F02VMjro
A1: I'm going for it because it seems like a reflective process that could only benefit my Ss.
- nothing wrong w wanting to be paid for our knowledge. Kept me in the classroom where I belong.
A2: I chose the masters because I felt like it was more marketable and many other states require it early in a career.
A2) I didn't know much about NBCT but I wanted to further my education.
A2: I just never have had the desire to get my National Board.
A2b My undergrad was in sociology...which sadly didn't help me get a job post-college at all! I wish I'd had a college counselor!
a1 pursued M. Ed and nbts @ same time - during my 3rd yr as a t. Both helped shape me into what I hope to be an effective T/coach
A1 I wanted a challenge and to measure my practice against a higher standard
A2: I felt at the time a master's would be more meaningful for my discipline (music). Felt NBCT was targeted to math/reading/ELA
increases pay UNLIKE masters in that it's about 10x the money in
A2: My undergrad college advisor talked me into it
A2) Funny story - my masters was based on the NBCT process - and I got a laptop!
A2. First did MEd bc you have to teach 3yrs. In hindsight, I wish I would have done MEd with core. https://t.co/YMyQfizdFN
Q2. If you have earned your Master’s degree, but are not an , why did you choose that route? https://t.co/jgEGVDF5NW
Q1 Alternative Cert had MBA first
A2 Master's was the way into admin. At time, funding for NBCT looked in jeopardy.
I have an embedded cross-cultural teaching M.Ed. and it helps me understand the diverse Ss in my clsrm.
Its what we should all want. https://t.co/1DoWCWXTr8
A1 I wanted a challenge and to measure my practice against a higher standard
Exactly...I learned in both programs...Not EITHER/OR
great point, same experience here. Curious if a study in improved outcomes have been done for that extra $
A3) I do not have both. Only the M.Ed.
Q2 M Ed in Ed Tech Leadership b/c it was program i could use in my classroom right away /progr. not offered in OK but needed.
I have yet to find anywhere where all masters costs are paid like Nat'l board
A2 I am both an NBCT and have a masters plus Ed leadership certification
A3) After getting my I wanted to go into administration.
true.. and it make me sad.. We work really hard to increase scholarships, but the payscale payout is low.
A2: Masters in Reading helped me become a better teacher. I learned a lot from the elementary Ts in the classes.
A3- I wanted to continue to grow as a leader in my district. District Cohort enticed me and kept me going.
A2 I am alternative certified so went the MA curriculum and instruction and a Ph.D. In education route instead of NBCT.
7th Grade Geog T from part of team checking in late for had to get homework done...
A3 My wife/spec ed teacher has 2 masters degrees, is writing her dissertation and is NBCT. She is a nerd!!
Sandra Park, ex dir joining late...
National Board no longer covers all costs, although it covers most.
$$$$ at first…Turns out I like learning…about myself and how to be a better teacher.
A2: I explored NB once upon a time, then moved, decided on M. Ed later in career
A3. The desire to be a perpetual learner! I Being on both sides of the podium= empathy. Going for PhD now. https://t.co/3oE7BZWCtD
A3 I've always loved learning and wanted a masters degree NB helped me find what area
A3 After student teaching I was unsure about teaching. Some time as a grad. asst., completed the degree, jumped in for 35 yrs.
A2: In the process of earning Masters degree now. Not in Ed field tho. That wld be why I chose that route https://t.co/q9V7iQexrs
Q2. If you have earned your Master’s degree, but are not an , why did you choose that route? https://t.co/jgEGVDF5NW
Good question, and one we can't answer since stipend support has been withdrawn.
Now considering doctorate, but in C&I. I want to work with teachers.
Honestly, got my masters to be more marketable in my career field. Knew teaching was my passion. Wanted to open more doors.
We enjoy learning from you and with you https://t.co/UvNsEHRdRv
$$$$ at first…Turns out I like learning…about myself and how to be a better teacher.
A2) was halfway done with a masters when I graduated undergrad. Figured I'd finish. By the time I finished, no more NBC scholarships
did you get to use similar artifacts for each!? That would make both experiences really worthwhile!
A4) I am not a NBCT so I am unable to answer.
A3 missed nbct by 20 pts didn't redo bc by the time I got my scores I had ambitions of leaving the classroom to be an inst coach
I love learning, too! I hope to one day earn my master's degree, and perhaps a Ph.D. as well.
A3) Pro-Best PD ever. Con-Still not as respected as a professional
Scholarships are back! Just no stipends...a salary line now.
A3 Earned my MS directly after my BS and before entering education. NBCT made me a better teacher for my students.
A2) MEd in educational technology. There is no national board cert for technology. Also any cert teacher can teach tech in OK.
Hi John Michael Montgomery, Representing Okla. House District 62 in Lawton. Likely a lurker tonight!
it also makes sad, that many AMAZING teachers leave education once they get Masters due to income opps.
A1: I wanted to lead by example for my students! I expect them to pass certifications, so what shouldn't the teacher.
A4 Pro reflection process was enlightening; Con choosing this to be paid closer to a prof rate & expecting to be treated differently
A4) Cons: It took me two tries to earn enough points to qualify as a NBCT.
Pro: it was an amazing experience!
I've known a lot of NBCT who lost the bonus becoming teacher leaders or administrators. That's frustrating. https://t.co/1LSRMpye73
A4: Pros-reflection Cons-getting in over my head.
But I'm not a classroom teacher anymore. That ship has sailed.
Lurking works! Thanks for checking on your constituaents https://t.co/RpgfcxjJhH
Hi John Michael Montgomery, Representing Okla. House District 62 in Lawton. Likely a lurker tonight!
A3) I have my NBC, but not my masters because the NBC scholarship was there. Still want a masters though. It's the one I'm missing.
Me thinks someone would be really good here….I know a person you should talk to…
A4: Pros-reflection, guidance, fellowship. Cons- time, energy, focus for a while.
A2) Got my 2nd masters bc I wanted to be a science specialist
A4) Pros - reflection, reflection, reflection. Pushing yourself further than you thought you could.
A4 -- Pro-everything I did reflected my own practice. My growth was incredible. Met other Ts who are mentors and friends.
LuVona Copeland NBCT 2007. Pro: Self reflecrion on practice. Confidence.
A4) Cons - lots of time and ambiguity.
Do 300 school districts need to consolidate? Will this truly save money? What does Quality look like? Q1?
A2 Currently earning my master's degree. Bachelor's was in Elementary Education. Now focusing on technology and virtual classrooms.
A4 cons: it's a LOT of work pros: it makes you a better, more reflective, student-centered teacher
A2 I began my teaching in HS. I could easily see that a main problem was students had reading problems. I went to get Elem and Rd .
I really enjoyed the Master's process. Will look for a doctorate at some point.
I can use "I was doing my Master's homework" as an excuse for being a bit late to the chat right???
A4 -- Biggest PRO- Education Leadership Oklahoma -- the best support program in the country. Scholarships, meetings, training.
offers MEd in Teaching with NBCT core.
A4) Pros -better practices, better instruction, more impact on students, and $. Cons - can be time consuming and the wait for scores
Amy Presley joining in on for the last half. I teach History with Broken Arrow High School
pro: met a ton of great teachers and mentors (like Claudia swisher)
Another con - the pay bump did not follow me as a GA in the college ranks…But I know my stuff :-)
A2 thought there was more potential to use Masters. Created opportunities.
For me, a master's or NBCT aren't the only certifications out there...I've worked hard to be google certified educator, trainer!
this is something I would love to do!
A5: Pros-I get to take music classes!!! Con-Money.
I am working on my double masters...administration and special education... I am trying to provide better for my family...
A5a) The Pros of my M.Ed. include a better understanding of my profession and how to conduct research properly.
Sorry new at this. A4 Pros are reflection on practice and confidence.
I have looked into this, as well. What would you say are the pros and cons?
I think we need to expose how many Ts children qualify for free/reduced lunch. agree?
It was a good time and a great learning experience! Enjoyed working with you and the others!
A5 -- Pro--I could concentrate on my field. Con--had to take classes that had no relevance to me.
A1- Have you ever road a bus for an hour and a half? Everyday? My kids do
I highly recommend it! Next up, google certified innovator and/or apple certified educator!
A5) Pro - collaborating with other teachers in my area
A5b) The Cons include the costs involved, ineffective classes in rural areas, disconnect from the daily realities of a school dist.
A5 Earning my masters made me think about what/how I was teaching and look at big picture of the school. https://t.co/ooxzCY32Fd
A4 Pros: the teachers you meet and become friends with are phenomenal!
You should host that chat!
A5a: My MAEd covered a gap in language w/ reciprocity & pay bump during freeze helped
a5) Reading research now that you have practice experience.. lots of Ugrad stuff is wasted w/o experience. Masters=more meaningful .
A5: Lifelong learner, network w/ other ldrs, lead for success of all Ts, Ss, Parents, comm. https://t.co/dXYCdQ3ngm
A5: following a passion 4 my degree. It can & hopefully will be tied 2 career but I really love learning https://t.co/2cm0Lb4INd
A5. Having a MEd allowed me to adjunct and teach secondary at same time. Good to be in both modes! https://t.co/n4CrmQGVC1
A5) Grew me as an educator, introduced me to excellent educators, and built in me an interest in ed research
A5: pros-a lot more possibilities and can pursue various avenues, not just subject specific. cons-time and all programs are diff.
A5: Pros- Focused, guidance, grades, timely Cons- Cost! Not always relevant, focused on theory
A4- Con: took a lot of time
Pro- I learned a lot about my teaching, student learning and development and collaboration.
A5 hard to come up with cons other than the cost involved. We can never learn enough!
A5) Gave me great ideas to use in the classroom! It was so practical!
A5 Pros: time to learn & reflect, great networking, prof growth Cons: student loans, variation in quality https://t.co/JAOcKnZHAw
a4 con: state doesn't seem to reward or offer much incentive for either anymore...
A5: Pros: continuing my education has always been a goal. I will pursue doctorate 1day. Cons: tough w/2small kids @ home.
pros: deep understanding of , cons: my district wouldn't pay for the tests
A5) Pros: Excellent profs and colleagues to learn from. Flexible class schedule for working teachers .
A5 Con: Teachers who earn a Masters and stay in the classroom probably will never earn back what they spent.
Con-two master's degrees and my pay raise barely moved. Pro-I'm a reading specialist and learned to create/innovate curriculum.
A5) Pros - money and colleagues who are as passionate as you. Cons- cost and time.
I was thinking the same thing. Also got a very little raise for it. Would have been more in private sector https://t.co/VO6HEFCsr7
A5 hard to come up with cons other than the cost involved. We can never learn enough!
This is exactly what I am wanting to do.
A4- Con: took a lot of time
Pro- I learned a lot about my teaching, student learning and development and collaboration.
Q4 Decided at 66 it was a little late to do National Cert.
And THAT was the draw for NB -- I earned the stipend ONLY if I stayed in the classroom full time.
A5 Pros...created opportunities in education to be change agent. Cons - Cost and some hoop jumping
A5) pros...met great educators through the process, opened many doors of opp; cons...I haven't experience any.
A5) Con....It cost money, however, what I gained out of it was well worth it to me
A5 - Pro - opens the door for opportunity.
Con - can’t think of anything negative about learning
Loving the Q5 responses great array of perspectives.
A5: Seeing the "big picture", growing & learning, networking
A5) At the time, Okeene paid 125$ per credit hour + teacher loan forgiveness. Burlington now pays all expenses toward a masters
Def an thing. MO gave me the cost back in a few years. Most T were getting grad degrees within 10 years. https://t.co/0qgBTd2Tu8
A5 Con: Teachers who earn a Masters and stay in the classroom probably will never earn back what they spent.
A5 pros: the learning and interaction with others. cons: expense!
. A5 con not cost effective. for masters is the $1k pay bump will take about 20 yrs to pay for itself... Give or take
True! https://t.co/LvNPTu2IjA
A4: Pros: New opportunities, learning how to embed the five core propositions into all your teaching, and networking with other NBCTs!
A4 Pros: mentoring others in NB & knowing you are making a difference in their lives & the lives of ALL the children they touch
Plus it connected me with a worldwide community of educators, which has been eye-opening!
A5- Pro- district cohort teachers were able to provide inside view to district workings, collaborated with great teachers,
Con-cost
A5) Pros- the expertise you gain. Cons- it takes YEARS to recoup the pay
A5) Another pro is that it led me into working on my doctorate degree
I get that.. we need to continue our work n this area.
A6: Domain IV. So nice that there is a focus on teacher contribution outside of the classroom.
is a great program! It's also reasonably priced. If you let a Student T work under u, it's half off https://t.co/GXfCVdHJWW
A5 Con: Teachers who earn a Masters and stay in the classroom probably will never earn back what they spent.
A5) Con - I have a doctorate, so any cost of the masters would never be paid back. Still gonna do it eventually though.
that’s so true, unfortunately
A6 True self reflection. We can become our best coach
Learning a lot lurking tonight! Great Archive to have!
A6 -- everything I did for NB was embedded in my class, my practice, my students. I was forced to stop & reflect on all this.
A5: it's cost prohibitive for most-the pay-scale increase doesn't justify the cost of getting the degree
I almost went for my Ph.d in curriculum, but my children, one a senior & the other a freshman were more important.
A6) I cannot explain in a tweet how immersive and growth developing the NBCT process was.
A5 Pros-opportunites, life-long learning. Cons-cost and finding time to complete work while working and taking care of family needs.
A6) All of the components really makes you think about how what you do effects learning not task completion
YES. I cannot wait to look into doctoral programs. https://t.co/QpcuEjJ241
A5) Another pro is that it led me into working on my doctorate degree
A5) Maybe one con...within 2 yrs the doors that opened took me out of the classroom.
You should blog about it then! :D
LOL! Exactly! Profound growth! https://t.co/EaAfSMUHog
A6) I cannot explain in a tweet how immersive and growth developing the NBCT process was.
I've considered going back for a PhD but it just seems like too much money for what little I make...
It is hard to put into words. I think every teacher should be required to go through it https://t.co/CopEHSGpKn
A6) I cannot explain in a tweet how immersive and growth developing the NBCT process was.
A6- I grew as a teacher and collaborator with my community, not enough characters to describe more.
A6) Reflection on my practices made the process worthwhile whether I passed or not.
don't forget about coming in June! Hope to see you there
A6: Looking forward to finding out! Already I can say my classes will change even next year as I begin the process.
but its not about the degree as much as about the learning.
A5) Pro: Mine was paid for by my Native American tribe,Seneca Cayuga.
I just might - but I have tried to block out the writing aspect…that was real hard.
A6 Reflecting on why I do what I do and is there a more effective way to teach?
A6 - honestly - I love learning. I just have never been interested in NBCT, not sure why…
This is the one difference between CA and OK that I notice. https://t.co/tfZWF9kE6S
A5: it's cost prohibitive for most-the pay-scale increase doesn't justify the cost of getting the degree
I know!!! I am almost OCD over my students :)
A6: the time spent improved my teaching practice, but also the way I think about my practice!
A6: I don't know, but you people seem pretty pumped about it!
A5/6 So I'm actually going back to school to get certified... The IT people make way more than I do in
S7 -- when I had my degree, I had another certification to help me get a job...but still spent 3 yrs on another emergency cert. :)
A5 The MEd program at SWOSU led by people who had classroom experience. Many great music educators came from that program.
A7) I enjoyed the research within my teaching prgrm. I use it to evaluate systems today.
Reading the chat. Jacob Stephens. Standing by.
A6. This is me with my first NBCT check! Honest answer... with a 7mo baby bump, lol. And I strengthened PLC https://t.co/uDPMPURaxB
it is a learning about your teaching sort of thingy - it does take time and energy.
So if I'm going to move forward with getting a Masters, my plan will be to move out of the classroom.
A6) It makes you see you and your work differently. It forces you to look at what you do through a different lens.
A6: the NBCT process pushes you to examine your practice & be the best you can be
A7) My master's grew me as a teacher, led me into my doctorate degree
I got my masters because I wanted more options, it sent me on a whole different path. I recommend masters to branch out.
A6 the word of the night NBCT REFLECTION! look comprehensively at my teaching; my choices; my S learning; agree more than a tweet
With scale the way it is. There is no return for getting advanced degrees. The state refuses to pay for teachers advancing.
A7) When I'm a student, I'm a better teacher. Grad school constantly reminded me of that. My Ss definitely benefited!
A7) Meeting colleagues and peers and developing relationships with great leaders and educators.
I gotta get back to work. Great talking w/u. Hope to see you guys in Tulsa on Saturday. We have to do an chat session.
A7 Masters often sparks interests that you didn't realize were there.
A7) The prof growth is great, but honestly, easier to support my family since earning a M.Ed.
A7: the mEd program requires much reflection. Also, the semester-long internship is excellent experience for wannabe admin.
And that's sad...we need you in the classroom, but we support your growth. NB allowed me to stay.
A7: My curriculum focus was on the reading skills my Ss needed to have. I learned many new strategies.
A7 It improved my teaching, helped me network, and gave me a chance to become more marketable. https://t.co/aeOslnljIS
A6 Perspective seems to get wider and deeper with graduate studies.
A5: Getting Ed Admin. Very interesting to see our profession from a different perspective. Wanting to help foster teacher leaders!
A7: I really enjoyed the detailed theory around my chosen passion, rather than being forced into studying generally.
A7) It took me out of the classroom, but it made me look really hard at my own classroom b4 I did.
A7: I'm one of those odd ppl who would be a career S if others would foot the bill. Will likely start Doctoral prog soon
kevin, loyd, Shawn, joy, rob, Tyler, where do you apply to host the Sunday nite discussion?
A7: Teaching experience, learning your craft more in-depth, networking, reminder of what its like on the S end!
A7 - I was a young teacher, I saw some T’s that were burned out. I got my masters so I would have options other than the classroom
A1 Haven't gotten a masters yet, but hope to get to work on that. Big issue picking which: international relations, econ, business?
A5 pros: first in my family, learning cons:cost a LOT, assgnmts that had nothing to do w/ my teaching, little financial incentive
No! If you are MEd you will want work to be relevant&applicable&you may need a class to do applied/action research.
pick one that you don’t mind being married to :-)
a7) my first masters widened my possibilities. .(computer science), funny it did not count for my PhD so had to get a 2nd on way.
A7 So I'm weird but I prefer informal learning...Grad school was tough, I hated writing 20 page papers. More of a hands-on type
My masters work helped me understand why/how admin, school boards, make decisions.
that's why I got mine. But hard to convince people to spend that kind of money when they will never make it up as a T
I don't think the Masters is the end of it. So many new strategies are available now. We have to keep on learning.
Agreed! I always knew I wanted to be involved in many aspects of education, so I saw MEd & NBCT as my ladder.
So true - look at what you have learned through chats - right?? https://t.co/VRvZ7LaZ2Y
I don't think the Masters is the end of it. So many new strategies are available now. We have to keep on learning.
My masters is in counseling, it was pretty hands-on. We actually counseled with students in private sessions at UCO
I am the most happy when I know that I could leave my job at any time. So I keep my skills up so I am here by choice.
, Have to point out that PD is diff now. Things like aren't a degree program, but HUGE. Digital world = dif approach
A7: One being able to help other music Ts introduce the Kodaly method of teaching into their classrooms.
A6 You never teach the same again. It makes you think about EVERYTHING YOU DO!!!
A7: my Master's process was great. excellent time for reflection and learned much more about best practices to say the least
These are awesome.. so bummed I can't go.. May have a few students go.. its an option for class. .
A8) I look for people, not letters. Passion with basic credentials is better than a Ts with M.Ed or NBCT and no connection to Ss.
A8) We look for good teaching, good classroom management, and a good fit at our school-Master's and NBCT are extras
A7: I felt that a M.Ed would enable me to create change, lead & support Ts, broaden my horizons
dear lord people? My favorite color is blue? Seriously?
I felt, w my Masters, I only learned a few things that I could take directly back to my classroom. NB, tho...ething!!
A8 I see the value in both, having worked through both. Not so much completion, but what they learned from it.
A7 Not that you asked, but teaching masters classes for has probably helped me learn as much as my students have.
A8. I'm not Admin, but NBCT is a structured, known, respected, universal process,so I can trust the results. https://t.co/k2folbYBCG
Sorry I'm late to the party, frequent lurker but never posted. I'm Kathy Sooter & I teach high school math.
A8: There aren't a lot of NBCT in my area, only know one, great teacher. I only really want to see a T who isn't done learning.
Both are bonuses that show dedication but I would lean NBCT if seeking a teacher because of the focus on your own practice.
My masters is an MS in Native American Leadership at SEOSU. Wld love 2 c what opportunities in Indian Ed are out there
A8 For teachers, I want to hear how those experiences have changed them. Neither is automatically a plus. https://t.co/hg04XitxXl
Pre-Service T OSU Sorry I am late. A1 I plan on pursuing a masters following my graduation!
Agreed. There's a lot of great resources/strategies that don't necessarily have certifications with them
Quite a trio - what about a mix of the three?
A8: Admin, with the current teacher shortage are you seeing a lot of NBCT applicants without jobs already in OK?
A8) I look for the best teachers. usually have best practices because of the amount of reflection
A8: I'm not sure I'd want to work for an admin that only looked for letters after my name wink wink.
Q9. Admin: What does having gone through one of these processes tell you about your teachers? https://t.co/EoC8C5nXkE
A:8
Looking at candidates with either often suggest that they have high standards for themselves &/or are life long learners
A8 part2: but right fit w/our school, dedication to kids, & coachablity would trump both. 😀
I'm having trouble finding Ts with certification, mostly emergency permit or need to apply.
OR Admin: do you ever not hire Masters or NBCT bc they are "overqualified" and more expensive??
A8 It's more about what the T can bring to our school as a result of their experiences w/ NBCT, masters or anything else.
A9: I feel like all the lettters after the name is great, but I feel like finding the right fit and would love kids is better.
This just in! Out here in the heartland we just want "A" applicant, let alone NBC app. Jus sayin
A9 -- , you're an admin who has NBC -- what's your take?
I hope for the difference between NBCT & Masters - is the short game vs long game.. I hope that pay starts to reward both.
Just a thought... Would more $$$ support of either spur more undergrads & more OK teachers-->help shortage???
I have seen some but most have positions elsewhere.
A9) I think it takes a certain amount of perseverance and grit but I don't think that that's the only way to cultivate those virtues
Two different ways to learn and grow. Both valuable. Both needed in profession.
A9) It depends. If they go through with a desire to be a better T then it shows me drive. If for other with no application…well
A9) Both process show a great deal of dedication and knowledge. I like to use their knowledge and expertise during PLC.
This is a great question - my initial motivation was for extra $$$ and I did get a scholarship for NBCT https://t.co/tP1gZG9hTZ
Just a thought... Would more $$$ support of either spur more undergrads & more OK teachers-->help shortage???
a9 I would like to think earning my m.ed sends the message that I am committed to learning and improving - something we all need
We have a teacher shortage. I hear the climate and pay sucks.
........ Crickets....I've got to get off here.
I want the best fit. I'd never pick a lesser applicant to save money.
There I go again talking about loving kids and unicorns and rainbows.
How much more transparent can it get? Every dollar spent is public on the OKSDE website. https://t.co/iaj50w57fa
Tune in to after X Files and football game to check out an idea to be more transparent on education dollars
A9 An NBCT has and probably continues to reflect on their craft. M.Ed. confirms increased knowledge in an area, both valuable
A9: not limiting to these 2 but ANY further education tells me the T desires to continue to learn & grow.
-- support would show a great commitment to educators. Holding my breath...
A)9 Like most opportunities, you get out what you put in. I hear great teachers talk about those experiences positively.
A9: As an NBCT I know how rigorous, time-consuming, reflective the process is, so I tend 2 feel an NBCT is extraordinarily dedicated
Would Masters & NBCT be more of a sure hire vs new teacher? Or do you really base on interview?
I would hope employers are looking for those willing to learn, some may not have masters, but may be willing to with support
A good team needs diversity....both are valuable!
Took the words right out of my keyboard! https://t.co/vGAeTYKbWG
a9 I would like to think earning my m.ed sends the message that I am committed to learning and improving - something we all need
A6) As an accomplished T, the NBCT process made me a better T and opened doors to serve the profession. https://t.co/IIQTxIgXgb
we all love kids. We have more serious problems in Oklahoma education to discuss. https://t.co/JjSe63cbzp
There I go again talking about loving kids and unicorns and rainbows.
Admin, A Q for you - seems like most got MA in a subject area. Am I an oddball for focus on Curriculum Dev? Still adjusting to OK
I think that it's advertised more that teachers are not paid enough, which doesn't help the shortage.
Things (education $) that are spread that thin are pretty transparent
Dr. Aspedon and Co. opened my eyes to a lot. https://t.co/WhxIA9aGdF
but its not about the degree as much as about the learning.
Amy Karnes AP & Dir of Tech Allen Bowden. Little late...ironing. M.Ed. Considered NBCT or MS Pure Math briefly, decided admin.
I have been lurking but am just now checking in. I love watching my MA students grow and apply theory to practice!
A7: I think the reflection and the sense of personal commitment you are making to the profession makes it worthwhile
It would probably have to be a really bad interview (and/or references) for me to make that choice. https://t.co/1acCedLViL
Would Masters & NBCT be more of a sure hire vs new teacher? Or do you really base on interview?
A10) I am new to my district so I do not know.
No worries, Anthony. NBCT is a plus but dedicated, coach-able will win out on my interviews.
A10: our district pays a teacher $500 for each masters class they complete
A7 having necessary certification, learning is always worthwhile
A10 -- am very interested in what districts are doing...Leaders who've gone above&beyond are huge assets.
https://t.co/HofSQrz4Gt
As long as we promote compliance & systemic obedience over authentic learning, we will fail to educate our Ss in meaningful ways.
Dr. Aspedon is the best professor I've ever had in education
A10- nothing. My principal asked me why I would do it. Other NBCTs have been encouraging though. Thankfully I'm very self motivated
A 10: not much. They recognize those who already have . Our district used to have many. Most have left.
A10) We offer collaboration time and colleagues who have been through the process to help.
Each class? or each degree?
A10: offers half tuition if your district uses their student teachers
RT Dr. Aspedon is the best professor I've ever had in education
A8:Don't look for either.Expect the quality of responses & guest teaching to be higher than a candidate w/o https://t.co/t0EcixiKsp
A10: My first M.ed in Secondary Education was funded by a grant.
A10) Burlington pays all expenses toward masters. We have had only a couple take us up on it so far though. Hoping for more.
A10 I got a new ID with my name and NBCT on it
I want to hear from teachers how the process(es) made them a more reflective T. Good indicator of growth https://t.co/IwhwQp4NPg
A10: reimburses from a pool of money, you just have to apply.
A10) Currently, I'm working on my doctorate through a cohort program that has partnered OU with my district
A10) If your school has had ECU student teachers, there may be grad tuition waivers available to you. Check with your admins!
When hiring team dynamics should be a factor..if there is a master teacher already there to support new hires, why not hire a newby
Our rural school is available if Ts want 2 pursue Masters via distance learning from schools like https://t.co/r0Rt7dm34Q
Interesting debate of content vs CIED. I did MEd w/ English specialization bc I wanted degree to feel applicable to Ss.
the entire NBCT process is reflective - it is all about reflective
I base on interview & references, but if it's close, NBCT is def an edge. (But I love excited novices!)
A10. At it's about celebrating every teacher's accomp! Nothing special from dist, but it's a culture of encouragement.
A10 the district I was in when I earned masters and NBCT did nothing to support either
Master's strengthened my broad understanding & skill. NBCT is more reflective. Both have made an impact on my teaching.
Taking a break from to say !
How did you find a grant for your master's?
Most universities including do the same. in Norman, Moore, OKCPS they pool unused hrs for all teachers
A10) I have also felt incredibly supported by my colleagues and principal has I have worked through both my masters and my doctorate
I think others also need to hear the good side of teaching
That was the most profound change in my teaching post-NBC! https://t.co/WkwwJe6w0t
the entire NBCT process is reflective - it is all about reflective
I have heard that this is the case with my district. Will look into that after I'm done with my NBCT.
NBCT forced me to look at certain parts of my practice that, now years later, I find myself still relying on
My first M.ed I worked two jobs??? Seriously.
A10) However, I think it would be great to encourage more Ts to pursue post grad work.
BONUS Q: What is he most important take-away you have gained from tonight's chat?
That's awesome! It was wonderful for me, didn't work for
I hope your Ts will consider ECU's 100% online M.Ed. in Ed Tech or Library Media!
Final Thought: A reflective T is a valuable asset. Some of us from out of state went through a reflective M.Ed. program before NBCT.
with as much as science changes, I wish there was more support for science Ts to go back to school
I could go to school forever if I had time! I love it! https://t.co/vIrbJ2F0yV
A3 My wife/spec ed teacher has 2 masters degrees, is writing her dissertation and is NBCT. She is a nerd!!
a10 Putnam city has a "future admin" program which provides support to those interested in pursuing admin.
Bonus A: teachers are life-long learners & there are many paths to choose from!
Bonus -- educators in are striving to learn and grow...for our students. We want to be better for our students. :)
Bonus answer: That teachers want to learn and improve, in spite of obstacles and a lack of support. https://t.co/r0g4ggbmWd
BONUS Q: What is he most important take-away you have gained from tonight's chat?
David Wall, JH Science teacher, NBCT for 6 years, MS Ed Leadership for 2.
A10: My district does nothing, but lets me know they have to pay the taxes on the money the state sends.
ba: learned a lot about how different district value NBCT and Masters. Thank you
A3 I would want to pursue a masters in the hopes of furthering policy perspective and gathering new ideas on how to approach issues.
exactly! That's what I want to hear/see from T candidates when interviewed. Being reflective is a trait I need from my T's
I would recommend student teachers join these chats bc it helps with interview questions for them to ask the districts.
Bonus Answer: Life long learners are what we all strive to be, these are just formal ways to do it! https://t.co/ZqgoUD0mQr
BONUS Q: What is he most important take-away you have gained from tonight's chat?
That Ok Ts will do what they need to accomplish to help them become better Ts for their Ss. Learning & improving never stops.
Bonus - is even more than I thought…tonight proves it.
BonusQ: Never stop learning!
Bonus A: Oklahoma educators are committed to their students
and just value their teachers overall. Eyes opened tonight! Thanks https://t.co/PgRzDUWl06
ba: learned a lot about how different district value NBCT and Masters. Thank you
Bonus: We all need to be lifelong learners, with student impact as our focus!
First Core Proposition! It all starts with our kids.
Make no generalizations based on credentials. There r great hires w/ &w/o NBCT or masters. Still, creds show commitment 2 profession
Thank you for an informative chat tonight!
Thank you all so much for your insight into these Q. I am looking forward to pouring over your A's in depth.
Hey, next time you're more than welcome to participate in the chat to share those opinions but for today be nice to Steph
You're welcome, and thank you!
BA) Great Ts are always seeking growth. is blessed to have so many great Ts!
Bonus A) I would like to find ways to recruit and .Ed to my district. Also look for ways to encourage current Ts to pursue
Thanks for a very informative chat! Learned a lot!
I wonder - how would our schools be different if every teacher was NBCT or M.Ed…
Great job moderating tonight.
Or 21st Century or soon2b Spec Ed masters online. :) Many programs in 2 fit needs
keep on talking about all those things! :-)
Thanks! Goodnight, ! Remember, "study, study, school's your buddy!" 🤓
Great topic and a great job leading the discussion. Thanks!
Thank you, and I'm glad you were part of our chat!
-- great questions! I'm proud of you!
Really enjoyed the chat.. learned a lot.. Thanks..
Thank you very much. That means a lot to me!
