#personalizedPD chat. A fast-paced, fun chat to discuss personalized professional development for educators. We discuss what it is, why it's better than traditional PD, how to create personalized PD opportunities, how to scale it from individuals to districts, and how to inspire it from individuals to districts to want more and more of it. Hosted each week by Jason Bretzmann @jbretzmann and Kenny Bosch @KennyBosch and moderated each week by a guest moderator. 8pm Central each Tuesday.
Hello! I am Kenny Bosch, co-host and co-author of the #personalizedPD book. https://t.co/UKHXahxKzN
Thank you for joining us tonight.
Take a minute and invite some friends to join us.
Q1: What are ways that educators can reflect (individually or collaboratively) to help them identify professional growth objectives for 2018? #personalizedPD
A1: When educators reflect, their goals become more relevant. Ways to reflect: PLC’s, Masterminds, Twitter chats, blogging, book studies. #personalizedPD
A1: I have a coaching log that helps me identify where I spend my time: grades, topic, etc. I reflect to see if there is growth in the areas where I spend my time. If not, adjust. #personalizedPD
A1: Write. Write. Write. I committed to a morning writing routine every day. Since then, I have thought more about my leadership than ever before. #personalizedpd
A1: Find something in education that you are passionate about. Read all you can about the topic. Share with those who want to learn more. Always do what's best for kids!! #personalizedPD
A1: I use a method that lists out instructional strengths, then list our weaknesses. Then I use three filters to hone in on which weakness needs to be turned into a strength first. #personalizedPD
Q1: What are ways that educators can reflect (individually or collaboratively) to help them identify professional growth objectives for 2018? #personalizedPD
A1) Make a list of things that you want to do to make yourself more effective as an educator. Some long term some short term. Choose one of each. #personalizedpd
A2: With the encouragement of some colleagues, I have submitted my first proposal to speak at a breakout session at a national conference coming up in April! EEEKKK!! #personalizedPD
A2: My objectives for 2018 are divided into 4 categories: Family, Relationships, Leadership, and Well-being. I have a goal for each category. For example: my leadership goal for the year is to produce resources and publish at least 1 blog post per month. #personalizedPD
Absolutely. So much of what I do isn't directly loggable, so it feels weird to quantify is sometimes, but the info is great. What really matters is how I respond to what it shows me. #personalizedPD
Every single time I leave a hand-written note to a teacher, they seek me out to tell me thank you. Targeted, positive feedback helps build trust and community. #educoach#personalizedPD
A3) They can be beneficial in lots of ways. Hold you accountable. Inspire them to do something more. They can serve as a sounding board. Change the culture of your grade level, dept, school, etc. #personalizedpd
A3: Making your objectives public helps hold you accountable for working toward achieving them. It can also inspire others in establishing growth objectives. #personalizedPD
A3: A3: Accountability, encouragement, collaboration, inspiration! The possibilities are endless! It’s more fun to celebrate successes when others know what you are working towards. #personalizedPD
A3 :I think this can be for accountability reasons; some people are more driven when they have to own up to others expectations vs. inner expectations. This is greatly explained in the Tony Robbins Podcast called Upholder, Questioner, Obliger or Rebel? #PersonalizedPd
It's time for the #Lurker shout out!
We love our lurkers at #personalizedPD
I see you there! You could slowly scroll through the chat, but we would love to hear your thoughts. Join in, or not, it's cool.
Thanks! A3: Sharing our intent as well as our journey innately gives permission to others to go on their journeys as well. That’s why I build it into the Reflection phase of my model. #personalizedPD
Also, this can be powerful while being supported by others and having them help you reach your goals, motivate you and allow you to continue to grow while offering constructive feedback #PersonalizedPd
A4) Make yourself vulnerable. Most if not all of one's PLN should be there to make you better. Look and ask for influences, direction, paths, etc. #personalizedpd
A4: My #PLN is like a virtual PLC. They celebrate small steps and provide a wealth of resources. I intentionally search hashtags that apply to my obj. #personalizedPD
A4: You can share your objectives with your PLN, or even ask someone to be your “accountability buddy”. Participate in Twitter chats, or maybe even host one yourself! Tweet out a question, ask for ideas, use your PLN as a sounding board. #personalizedPD
A4: Any learning journey worth taking will provide roadblocks or moments of “I don’t know.” And that’s ok. Having that PLN in place is shat those moments are for. #personalizedPD
Right! When listening tot he podcast, I forgot that not everyone was an "Upholder" like myself, and might have a more difficult time maintaining that intrinsic motivation and those inner expectations. I think it is key 🔑 to know ourselves first! #PersonalizedPD
A4: Starting a new process where students will have mini-debates on current events topics and topics of philosophical disagreement. Calling it "Passing Time" as in you only get 5 minutes. Does my PLN have a topic of discussion for HS Juniors we should use? #personalizedPD
Q5: What were your growth objectives in 2017, and did you achieve them? How will you determine the effectiveness of your growth objectives for 2018? #personalizedPD
A4: Sorry! Little one woke up. This chat and so many like it provide support, laughter, ideas...There’s really no excuse to stagnate for long anymore. #personalizedPD
Completely agree, Sarah. It is important to know yourself and how you work, your strengths and weaknesses and how to continue to enhance your strengths while improving upon your weaknesses. #personalizedPD

Q5: What were your growth objectives in 2017, and did you achieve them? How will you determine the effectiveness of your growth objectives for 2018? #personalizedPD
A5 My main growth objective was to communicate even more with parents about grades, positive notes about success and any areas of concern. I used a Google Sheet to track it. It helped me see how often I was sending positive notes. #personalizedPD
A5: One of my objectives was to publish 1 blog post per month. I didn’t quite get there, so I have kept my objective, and changed my strategy. How to determine effectiveness? Stop, reflect and adjust often. Ask your PLN. #personalizedPD
A5: I went to a conference where one of the speakers talked about taking care of yourself first in order to take care of others. I've made more time for me a priority.
Even if I don't get my proposal accepted, it's still going to be an amazing conference! #personalizedPD
A5: Develop relationships with staff- I was at a new campus. A must if I am to be successful in 2018 which is providing the right conditions for Ts to own their learning. T growth is the evidence I’m looking for. #dohardthings#personalizedPD
A5) I wanted to go back into the K-12 classroom, I did that. I didn't finish the dissertation, but I am still plugging along. For 2018, I will reflect daily as to my progress, monthly on smaller parts of the obj, and at the beginning of 2019. #PersonalizedPD
Good point. Another idea is that adjusting your goal doesn't mean failure, it means you made a smart adjustment based on your situation. #personalizedPD

This is definitely an important piece Jarod! How to guide our reflection in order truly and effectively discover ourselves and our needs is also a huge area to explore... #PersonalizedPD
Trying to engage in more meaningful PD for myself and our district. Struggling to convince others to get involved, so this year my goal is to engage more educators in the area to take note of the opportunities that are available to us. #personalizedPD
Developing relationships is the most important part of our job. If we can take time to get to know each other we understand each other better and will be more willing to work with each other. #personalizedPD

A1) The curriculum that is not always on the textbook. What can we relate this to outside of those pages? Can we find it locally to help us understand how it applies? These are things that I find interesting and exciting. #PersonalizedPD
Glad you're here Craig. Great modeling for those folks you want to bring on the journey with you. Loving your goals. This #personalizedPD community can help!
See, that's what I am saying @jprofNB It is not a bad goal to blog every month, but it may need to be revised to once every other month. #personalizedPD
I have a blog, do not use it much. I Tweet a lot and update and reflect there. The book is the ultimate reflection on learning. So maybe I should hold myself accountable to the blog with updates on all of the other stuff. #PersonalizedPD
A6: Honestly? I'm not doing it to be recognized. I'm doing it for me! I think what I have to share is valuable to my profession and just the honor of being asked to write a proposal is enough. I can continue what I love without the recognition. #personalizedPD
A6 I would like to be recognized with a day off to catch up on all of my emails and maybe sleep, or watch a TV show like other people do....ha ha. #personalizedPD
A6: We can celebrate in simple ways: together as a team (candy, coffee, a silly trophy, announcement, post on Twitter with a specific hashtag, or even Facebook). I love hearing feedback from my colleagues, and realizing that I made a difference for them. #personalizedPD
Yes, Jason! As a Teacher Candidate beginning in this profession, it is important for me to be guided and mentored in the early stages of my career to be able to properly reflect on the things that matter and bring that with me for my journey into teaching! #personalizedPD
