Good Morning #EduGladiators! I’m Tawanda and so excitedtochat learn from you. I’m an Intervention Teacher and one of two Intervention Facilitators at my school. I gladiate by facilitating the Multi-Tiered Systems of Support.
Paul from NJ here. I gladiate for kids by having the courage to change the conversation. I realize that behavior is communication. That said, I’m always looking for root cause and new ways to support students who struggle. #edugladiators
Hey everyone! Dennis here from RI, I’ll be following along because I’m at a meeting at Rhode Island College this morning, looking forward to reading everyone’s input. #EduGladiators
A1: I think understanding students aren’t monolithic helps. If 10% of the class feel a certain way, but that 10% is made up of 100% of a certain subsection of students, that voice needs to be loud and salient! #edugladiators

Yesterday I observed a great debate lesson where the teacher ended the lesson asking students how she could enhance future debates in the unit #EduGladiators
Morning, #edugladiators. I'm Brian. I teach middle-school students English in Colorado. A1 I see students who have agency in class doings often using voices they're developing to navigate classroom conflicts more constructively.
I think as a leader though I need to often focus student feedback when I meet with students because when you ask it is like drinking out of a fire hydrant
#EduGladiators
A1: Ss impact the culture by default so the question is do you want them to be working with you or against you. Acknowledge them and show them respect and they will do great things. #EduGladiators
A1. As an admin we do “feedback loops” with kids each quarter we want get feedback and then act upon it to make change. Lots of time and effort but so important we get kids voice. #edugladiators
A1: Inclusion of students in the learning process helps them take ownership in their learning. It creates more buy-in and may help with strengthening bonds between Ss and Ts. #edugladiators
A1 Student voice and choice is at the center. We take the time to teach Ss how to have a 1:1 conversation regarding feedback. Powerful conversations - they learn so much from one another! #edugladiators
A1 As a principal one of the things I try to do when I meet with kids that struggle with behavior is make them a part of the process in solving their problems #EduGladiators
A1: Students need to express their opinions about the classroom and the learning and have those ideas incorporated to build a positive classroom culture of belonging and ownership. Whose classroom is it? #EduGladiators
A1: Including student feedback helps to ensure less classroom management problems. Students are the largest stakeholder in the room, not you! #edugladiators
A1) When Ss feel like they are taken seriously & r truly a part of the decision making & makeup of the class, they have a bigger buy in. They then feel valued & respected, & the community is stronger b/c of it. #edugladiators
A1. As a young T, it took me a couple years to "let go" of some of my preferences to welcome student input, but once I invited their ideas a true community could be built. This is what I want to encourage for my Ts now! Community=fewer behaviors! #edugladiators
Australia Day: National Cay. Celebrated annually on 26 Jan. The anniversary of the 1788 arrival of the First Fleet of British ships at Pt Jackson, NSW. Celebrations reflect the diverse society & landscape of the nation & are marked by community/family events. #edugladiators
A1: I started self paced learning quests this year and students have taken formal and informal surveys about what’s working and what needs improvement. I now teach reading skills 3 days a week and writing 2 days a week based on a student’s suggestion #EduGladiators
A1: Students need to express their opinions about the classroom and the learning and have those ideas incorporated to build a positive classroom culture of belonging and ownership. Whose classroom is it? #EduGladiators
A1: When I was in the classroom, I surveyed my students often. I would implement their feedback (& let them know I was changing something because of their suggestions!). I feel students spoke up more & knew they could express if they had a concern or suggestion. #edugladiators
I have had this experience as well. The questions you ask matter a great deal. There is hand grenade feedback and roll up your sleeves feedback. The latter builds ownership and community! #edugladiators
A1) This was part of my study in grad school! We (3 #mathteachers) used student feedback to guide new projects. We always asked students what they liked, disliked, what worked, and for suggestions. Even included them in creating grading rubrics by end of year! #edugladiators
A1: I use Tmail (teacher mail). This is a way for my kids to communicate their needs and give feedback to me in a confidential way. I read and reflect on their Tmail each afternoon and take necessary steps to respond. #EduGladiators
A1 I do regular feedback informally with the kids and build relationships which helps get that non-verbal feedback. I try to personalize where I can and approach topics which seem to be on their minds. Let them start and share their voice. #EduGladiators
At the same time so much happens in a school day and after school so I understand how student feedback can be lost in the mix of grading, planning, responding to parents and students #EduGladiators
A1: Including student feedback promotes cohesiveness and builds relationships. Students learn from and trust their peers during the learning process. This requires modeling from the facilitator/teacher. #edugladiators
A1: With 111 Ss, it challenging to take everyone's ideas into account. Monitor/Adjust daily. Make major changes during summer based on prior year's suggestions. #edugladiators

A1 I find it's the little things that often have greatest impact. Developing expectations w/ Ss instead of giving them rules. Ownership matters. #edugladiators
A1 Our Feedback page https://t.co/0xvreDGfvV Students and teachers want to know how well they are doing. Providing positive feedback is important as it will motivate them to learn more. When they make a mistake we want them to learn from it as well. #EduGladiators
Letting students know how their feedback is being used is KEY! Then they see how important their feedback is, why they are being asked for it, and what an important role they have in their own learning. #EDUgladiators
A1: When I was in the classroom, I surveyed my students often. I would implement their feedback (& let them know I was changing something because of their suggestions!). I feel students spoke up more & knew they could express if they had a concern or suggestion. #edugladiators
You had me at community ⭕️s. So reminiscent of elementary circle time to read books, talk about the day etc. I believe much can be accomplished if we gather Ss together in this manner! #EduGladiators
I give them a voice, and I ask them to hold me accountable for how I have promised to make them feel in my room. They use these feedback cards to share their feelings. #EduGladiators
A1 It has made a difference, shows we value them, their input and want to build a classroom culture and community for "us" and not just my way #edugladiators

I agree and I think when students attend schools where that is generally their experience they have more investment in their learning and the school community in general.
#EduGladiators
A1 Having students assist in the creation on the classroom environment helps build ownership. Their feedback helps me drive the decsions I make in the future. Biweekly reflection opportunities on specific topics also helps me better understand their needs/wants #edugladiators
A1. It ensures that we are focusing on the most important things. Feedback can often lead to the realization that we've been spending a lot of energy on things that don't matter as much as others. It can also highlight little changes that make a big impact. #edugladiators
A2. We strive to find ways to get doing something that makes them feel good/success (peer mentor , help custodian) so they develop confidence and change behaviors over time. #edugladiators
A1. Part of student voice is our Principal Sound-Off (3x/year). Character Connection Class reps meet with Grade Level Principal and counselors to share insights, questions, and concerns to improve our school. Then we provide feedback. #edugladiators
A2 this all starts with building relationships and developing a plan for students that need assistance. They need to be involved in the process. You also need to facilitate reflection and use restorative justice and mediation when possible. #EduGladiators
A2) There's no reason my "antsy" students can't move around the classroom. Sometimes I have to tell them to get moving - they are much relieved when allowed to do so. It helps prevent issues #edugladiators
A2: We must remember to start with positivity!!! Have clear expectations. Remind students by narrating. Assume the best. Shout out what you want to see and quietly address when students are off-task. #edugladiators
A1. Feedback that is supportive, constructive, timely & forward looking can help all Ss develop their knowledge & understanding, as well as motivation. Feedback on assessment is a key learning opportunity for Ss; an inclusive approach. #edugladiators
I love these and this reminds me to encourage the use of them more often especially with older students where they know exactly what's working and what needs tweaking
#EduGladiators
I give them a voice, and I ask them to hold me accountable for how I have promised to make them feel in my room. They use these feedback cards to share their feelings. #EduGladiators
A2) Maybe not what you're asking for, but I contrast what Ss currently know & can do against earlier in the year. I make a big deal that the consequence of their hard work is growing their brain. What they can do now is a direct result of their hard work. #EduGladiators
A1. It shows Ss that they are valued because we use their feedback. No one does well when they are constantly dictated to. It is actually using democratic principles by seeking input from Ss (constituents) #EduGladiators
A1 Our Feedback page https://t.co/0xvreDGfvV Students and teachers want to know how well they are doing. Providing positive feedback is important as it will motivate them to learn more. When they make a mistake we want them to learn from it as well. #EduGladiators
A2: I am a huge believer in the power of restorative justice. Starting and/or ending class with community circles gives Ss the chance to speak to their classmates. #edugladiators
Taking a moment to flip this idea on its head: Imagine environment focused only on exclusion and mandated tasks. Consider how that'd feel to be part of or to lead... Doesn't compliance, especially as sole organizing principle, feel stifling? #edugladiators
A2: We must remember to start with positivity!!! Have clear expectations. Remind students by narrating. Assume the best. Shout out what you want to see and quietly address when students are off-task. #edugladiators
A1. Ss might be asked to write a brief self-assessment at the end of their coursework. This self-assessment could be taken into account for the final mark & could stimulate discussion with the marker who should respond to the points raised. #edugladiators
A2. we use our Core Ethical Values to have conversations with students. It’s about the relationship and learning “why” something happened. Then moving forward. #EduGladiators@CHARACTERplus
A2: Oftentimes, students are misbehaving because WE (the adults in the room) aren't totally clear. Take the time to craft specific directions (and express them in various ways), narrate what you want to see, and use the least invasive method to adjust behavior. #edugladiators
A2: My goal is to put supports into place that assist the repair and prepare process. How can we repair harmed relationships? How can we repair the loss of time/opportunity? How can we prepare S’s for better responses or performances next time? #EduGladiators

A2: Planning a trip to the local amusement park for our SPED students to celebrate them for their hard work this school year. It is something that they are really looking forward to. All of the Ss are eligible to go, not just the “Good” ones. #edugladiators#LeadingEquity
We never managed to get our students and our out-of-school community linked. But, we did get the class connected to the larger school body by inviting guests into classes, sending work out to be evaluated by other adults in the school. #EDUgladiators
A2. Tier 1 support for behavior- teach all Ss what we expect of them! So often we expect them to act "right" without empowering them to make the right choices. It's not about punishment, it's about preparation to be a problem-solver. #edugladiators
A2: The consequence may be the child realizing they disappointed you, but this is the case when there is a relationship. I believe praise is the best source of redirection! When you hear what you do right (or wrong), you respond. #edugladiators
A2 I have surprised myself sometimes over the years as I have felt a shift from the traditional discipline/responses to CR mgmt, into a conversation and working on the relationships more, work together #edugladiators

A1. Every friday my teachers quiz their students about how they feel about sitting arrangements and things like "who do you feel it was a good leader this week". That will also let you know who is pointed out less often #edugladiators
A2: Thanks for the tag, @Rdene915 ! Forgot!
Gamifying this year, so Ss get shoutouts & XP (experience points) for being awesome. Ss help define awesome, & they LOVE gaining XP, which is strictly in our virtual "game" and all are on teams. #edugladiators
A2 We developed a community council and we would take time to reconvene and discuss topics - social skills, academic needs, how behavior impacts self, class, school and family #edugladiators
A2: Have CLEAR expectations & adhere to them. This year my school requires visible student IDs. I had a lot of pushback. Now I stand at my door, greet each student by name (sometimes in song), shake hands/ high five, but I’m also silently enforcing the ID rule. #EduGladiators
A2: Constant conversations about the GOOD things Ss are doing. Make positive phone calls home to let parents know. No better feeling than seeing that smile on a kid’s/parent’s face when they’re encouraged. #edugladiators
A2 It is important that we continually teach behavioral expectations as well as academic ones. It is an opportunity to interact, to discuss root cause, to speak kindly when it is not expected. The level of our response is, in a way, the deciding factor. #edugladiators
A2 For me, it all starts with building relationships. Then, have students assist in the creation of the expectations. They aren't so easy to forget if they create them. Also, students must know/understand the expectations. I always praise the positive! #edugladiators
A2. The key to any consequence is teaching Ss the alternative positive behavior(s). If not, the behavior will occur again. We must have the end in mind when we approach behavior concerns. So it may look different for different Ss. #EduGladiators
A2. We are educational institutions, not a penal system. Our model must be one of the highest level of civil discourse. We should aspire to South Africa's Truth and Reconciliation Commissions and not our failed sytem of mass incarceration
#EduGladiators
#edugladiators A2. My students have a clear understanding of what the expectations are. I hardly have to repeat my points ..those are set very clearly and firmly at the beginning of the year. and followed thru ..the same rules apply to me too . The Ss can question me if I falter.
I can relate, I always want more time especially because I enjoy the conversations with them as they work, push some thinking, I learn so much from them! #edugladiators

A2: Consequences should never be punitive/harmful. They should give opportunity to “fix” what they did, arming them with insight/tools/hope for growth. This is a positive tool that encourages kids to choose a “consequence” that’ll help them be better in the future. #edugladiators
A2. Consistent negative behaviors are often tied to a root cause that Ss needs to work through. Routinely meeting with the counselor can help a S get the support they need to improve their behavior; can be beneficial for the long-term stability & success of the S. #edugladiators
A2 Much of this is in being intentional & proactive. Planning movement, breaks, engagement into lessons. When a consequence is needed, must be logical. #EduGladiators
A2: Our School gives out raffle tickets for students who show one of our core values. All the prizes are experiences (pizza with he principal, extra recess) or books. I also use the game sites Cool Math and Prodigy as rewards for students on behavior plans #EduGladiators

A3: Having conflict arise in the classroom allows kids to learn how to deal with it, as well as learn how to move on from it . Hopefully they learn that life moves on and people get over it. #EduGladiators
The concept of conflict, dissent, and teaching Ss how to navigate their feelings (especially anger) is crucial in a classroom. We often struggle as Ts handling anger; from Ss, colleagues, parents, and leadership. A lot of it is navigating our own anger, TBH #EduGladiators

A2 Much of this is in being intentional & proactive. Planning movement, breaks, engagement into lessons. When a consequence is needed, must be logical. #EduGladiators
A3. Conflict can be positive when we use our relationships to build empathy, model compassion and develop skills to see things from other perspectives. Helping develop these skills are essential skills for students and occur when things are challenging. #edugladiators
A3: Ss need to learn how to disagree and how to advocate a position without anger and frustration. The classroom is a perfect venue to practice productive conflict. #EduGladiators
A2. At the same time this is really tough because we need to help everyone learn how we model, value, and support positive behavior. When the work is solution rather than consequence based it helps.
#EduGladiators
A2: Our School gives out raffle tickets for students who show one of our core values. All the prizes are experiences (pizza with he principal, extra recess) or books. I also use the game sites Cool Math and Prodigy as rewards for students on behavior plans #EduGladiators
A1 At the beginning of the school year, we described and discussed what a fantastic student and a fantastic teacher look like and what he or she does. Most of the time Sts realize when they are not meeting the expectations as the want to be Estudiante Fantástico #edugladiators
A1 Most of my students are trauma-impacted.Guided choice (students are supported in choosing between a small, thoughtful number of selections & rotating through each) is one trauma mitigating tool.Considering these options (as centers or authentic tasks) is key. #EduGladiators
A3. Ask students for feedback. Ask what students and teacher done better to make the situation better? It’s a learning opportunity for everyone involved #EduGladiators
A3 T models how to have a calm conversation. Teach Ss how to have a productive conversation by listening and sharing - empathy/value statement (I understand you . . ), differing perspective (but have you thought about), rationale (this is why) #edugladiators
A1cont. Students are essential stakeholders in crafting the authentic choice selections. This investment leads to agency. In the implementation process, the process of guided choice aids management, especially when it comes to keeping #newcomers engaged and on task. #EduGladiators
A3. Conflict is a powerful tool for teaching empathy. Having a circle conversation guiding Ss to seek first to to understand, then to be understood. Hearing each other's perceptions builds empathy and gives everyone a chance to solve the problem together. #edugladiators
A2: Consequences should never be punitive/harmful. They should give opportunity to “fix” what they did, arming them with insight/tools/hope for growth. This is a positive tool that encourages kids to choose a “consequence” that’ll help them be better in the future. #edugladiators
A3: We're here to teach not punish, so working on that behavior to assure Ss can be in control of selves and respond appropriately the next time is key.
#edugladiators
A3: Great question. We also try to avoid conflict as adults. Through discourse, we think, we learn, we reconsider, & we grow. We must set up children (& adults) to feel comfortable disagreeing w each other - which goes back to Q1 - a strong community must be built. #edugladiators
A2: I am a firm believer that good choices spread- when Ss see me praising those doing the right thing, they want to follow in those footsteps. It’s imperative we take punitive measures out of our everyday interactions with kids. #EduGladiators
A2. Punishment is about us. Disciplinr is about the behaviour. If we focus on the behaviour instead of on the student we'll get better results. #edugladiators
A2. Break Pass: This helps students learn to identify their behavioral patterns and advocate for time to readjust. Ideally, overtime, students will be more aware of what influences their behavior changes and will begin to self regulate and adjust without a break. #edugladiators
A2, sort of: Punitive consequences usually lead to resentment & retrenchment. Dialogue, though slow & messy in comparison, can invite new habits when there's follow-through, accountability -- different kinds of consequences, really; 1 might even be encouragement. #edugladiators
A1 I include myself in the conversation as I also want to be a Profe Fantástica for my students and we hold ourselves accountable. #edugladiators#buildingcommunity
A3: Using conflict as an opportunity to dig deep and reflect is crucial. We don’t always have to agree. Also, it’s important to examine if we are doing things the best way not just the way we’ve traditionally done things. Conflict promotes growth. #Edugladiators

A3 I think conflict has negative connotations because we never take the time to teach students the resolution part. We need to actively involve students in learning the skills to speak, debate, express the other opinion and manage emotion in the process. #edugladiators
A3 Conflicts can be the catalyst for some great conversations looking at everyone’s view points. We need to make sure those convos happen in a safe environment and everyone’s voice is heard #EduGladiators
A2: I have a private conversation with the student to identify why the behavior is occurring. I always offer the student a two minute visit to our classroom Calm Down Corner. #EduGladiators
I wonder if “calm” is healthy for dealing with anger, or if systemically we have encouraged folx to suppress their anger. Telling a friend to “calm down” when they are angry never seems to go well, not sure how that goes over with Ss. Just what I’m reflecting on #edugladiators
A3: all different sets of conflicts are teachable moments- we never learn when someone is talking AT us, let’s talk with the conflict in mind and work THROUGH it to avoid continuance #EduGladiators
A3: If conflict means difference of opinion, we have LOTS of possibilities. Have Ss explain & promote their position - limitless options. Fisticuffs are something entirely different. #EduGladiators

A3 I use conflict in my CR as a teaching tool especially with the use of #AccountableTalk Ss learn quickly that it is ok to disagree RESPECTFULLY. Restorative Practice is a great method to take confict and create a learning opportunity by letting others be heard #edugladiators
A3: Leading Ss in a discussion that allows them to think about how situations and words make them feel as well as what could be done differently can help Ss see the impact their actions have on others. #edugladiators

A3) I am trying to get away from adding labels and adjectives to words, but I frame the conversation around productive conflict. We are not arguing to argue. We are having conversations that are challenging us to continue growing. #edugladiators
A2: Consequences should never be punitive/harmful. They should give opportunity to “fix” what they did, arming them with insight/tools/hope for growth. This is a positive tool that encourages kids to choose a “consequence” that’ll help them be better in the future. #edugladiators
A3: Conflict is a natural part of life. What better way to model with children how we deal with conflict appropriately. The example they see on their screens can be problematic. #edugladiators
A2: It’s vital for us to magnify and celebrate students’ growth! This will alleviate their stress, anxiety, depression, and competition with peers. They need to be sheparded to measure their performance against their own so they can see their own growth. #edugladiators
A3) Discuss & look for ways to resolve. We need to teach Ss that conflict can be opportunities to grow. Everyone experiences conflict (sometimes internal, sometimes external). Ss need tools to appropriately work through conflict. #EduGladiators
A3 Conflicts can be the catalyst for some great conversations looking at everyone’s view points. We need to make sure those convos happen in a safe environment and everyone’s voice is heard #EduGladiators
A3) Its all how you frame it. "Conflict" - "discussion" - "dialogue" - "contrast" - those opposing viewpoints are where learning happens! They push us out of our comfort zone, make us think in different ways. Have to get Ss to consider different pts of view. #EDUgladiators
A3 In science, we use a lot of discourse to present & refute arguments. I give kids sentence stems to help model & teach appropriate disagreement. #edugladiators
A3. Rarely can change happen without conflict. Examining that conflict with curiosity rather than a need to be right is hard, even for adults. Making time to teach that skill is worth it. #edugladiators
Yesterday students and their teacher discussed how they can debate complex political issues in class but then sit next to each other at lunch. The defining factor was that conversation, when it does not happen problems occur.
#EduGladiators
A3: Conflicts in the classroom can turn into learning experiences. It may provoke difficult conversations needed to develop empathy and understanding. We can use these moments to build upon relationships. #edugladiators
A3: Ss and Ts who can manage conflict have successful and calm classrooms. I have Ss who want to switch classrooms because they know it's calmer in the classroom next door or that problems don't escalate. #edugladiators
A4. We must find ways to help kids experiences success (assign jobs or roles) as success builds confidence- this will lead to improved behavior. #edugladiators
A2. In looking at any system of consequences OR positive behavior interventions, are we considering if the educator's response to the student's behavior is: Relevant and impactful? Implemented from a lens of equity? Consistently carried out? #edugladiators
A3: Conflicts in the classroom can turn into learning experiences. It may provoke difficult conversations needed to develop empathy and understanding. We can use these moments to build upon relationships. #edugladiators
A4: We have Team Bond Shining Moments. These are complements the class gets as a whole during specials, hallway behavior, etc. from other adults. If they reach the goal, they get to plan a reward. #EduGladiators
A3: We teach the students how to use the Peace Path to solve their own conflicts with other students. I have a poster in my room and there’s one painted on the playground. Lots of modeling and practice at the beginning of the year (this poster got lots of love :) #EduGladiators
A3 Conflict at its most negative feels like zero-sum game. For 1 to win, another must lose. Acknowledging when this 'truth' is actually implicit bias & other roads remain open to navigate disagreement invites opportunity. 1/2 #edugladiators
I think it is also important that we offer a "time to breathe" opportunity. We often force kids/teachers to speak and interact when they are not in a place where they can. Learning to stabilize and then converse is an important skill. #edugladiators
A4: I enjoy the non-verbal landscape change. Whether it be using proxemics to change where a student is looking or just the simple tap on the desk as I walk by, the interruption to what’s going on creates chances to refocus student attention. #EduGladiators
We can always point to the leaders in our country to help...no...or maybe the countless positive examples they see on social media and television...no...maybe our kids have a ton of unlearning when it comes to positive behavior! #EduGladiators
A4: 2 successful classroom management techniques:
1) Ask & Listen: There may be an underlying issue unrelated to S response but totally related to the emotion in that response.
2) Deep breaths. Nature's remdedy for stress. When a HS S is showing anger, we breathe. #edugladiators
Q1: As an art teacher I see that the more choice I build into lessons the more ownership students take in their work! This is sometimes hard to do but I try to fit in a range of choice throughout the year. #edugladiators
A4: (1) When I work with students who are really struggling w. behavior, I have them think about 1-3 things they want to work on & then we create a plan. This teaches them to reflect, understand how they are impacting others & themselves, & are much more invested. #edugladiators
A4: (2) I also have the student present what they want to work on to teachers and family, and how they would like to be supported. Again - they are owning this with support. This is very different than adults controlling everything and making all of the decisions. #edugladiators.
A4: Allowing Ss to come up with a behavior plan for THEM. I had a very defiant student in the BOY & when I asked him what would help, he said journaling. When I see that out, I know he’s having a rough day. He usually comes to talk about it once he’s calmed down. #EduGladiators
A3.2 Besides defaulting to debate, students in conflict could, for example, explore alternatives together, weigh relative merits, uncover new options that nobody's thought of yet. I'm early in reading Crucial Conversations, which is starting to rub off on me. 2/2 #edugladiators
A3. By showing the socially acceptable way to deal conflict. We have to teach our Ss to be able to consider other points of view, many are too egocentric. Conflict in life is inevitable bcuz we are all unique. We have to know how deal with it in society. #EduGladiators
A4: I always talk to students to help them resolve classroom behaviors. Sometimes it is a whole class discussion because it impacts everyone. Peer to peer teacher facilitated conversations are the best. #edugladiators
A3 Healthy conflict is normative- & can be a progressive factor. Many students lack examples of what healthy conflict looks like, sounds like & feels like. We can model these behaviors & provide opportunities to practice these essential skills in a safe setting. #edugladiators
A3. In practice, conflict ranges on a spectrum from destructive (fighting in class) to constructive (learning opportunity). Before taking action, it is helpful to consider biases & experiences you have that might influence your judgment in a particular instance. #edugladiators
A4 I love choices. If a S refuses to do something and you tried to redirect tell them - I understand you've made ur choice, but here's something to think about - I believe in u - give them a positive statement to think about #edugladiators
Good morning #edugladiators. I have been off the grid since June, taking care of my mom, but I am realizing that being part of these conversations is respite care!
A2 When I noticed behaviors that may impede students’ and others learning, I have a conversation first with the St then with counselor, then with parents. At HS, students like to be involved in the conversation. Praise their efforts at school, listen to them #edugladiators
A3. Ranging from a minor disagreement about grades to more disruptive instances, we typically think of conflict as something to be avoided in T&L. On the other hand, what would a classroom discussion/debate be like if there were no differing points of view? #edugladiators
A4) I talk to a few key people in my dept about classroom management. We share situations, listen to each other, really dive into the issue, and offer help. How we "manage" differs each time. Mostly though, we work to diffuse before "managing" becomes necessary. #EDugladiators
A4. The golden rule. SchoolToolsTv has helped thousands of Ss and Tt to deal with feelings, bullying, relationships... in just 1 minute a day... kids feedback: #EduGladiators
A3: Students need to be taught how or given strategies to resolve conflict; and use it to be productive and as an opportunity to be creative. That would require adults to build their capacity to do the same. #EduGladiators
A4 For students who are fidgety during carpet time, provide a sitting space on the carpet with room to change positions and a sensory object to use (squeeze ball) #edugladiators
A4 One of my favorites is a corner designated as a "Calming Corner" when Ss become upset, frustrated, or just need a moment. I have resources such as breathing techniques and other options to help them regulate their own emotions and reset themsleves #edugladiators
A4 I like to use the "You tell me". When you walk in the door, you tell me what your day has been like. It helps me keep an eye out, understand behavior, and begin to notice body language in the future. #edugladiators
A4a It also doesn't give them a pass but helps them feel like their emotions are being honored and allows them to express them in a safe way. #edugladiators
Oh ha! Nope! I even rename the "Rainbow Walk" which is a very helpful strategy with Ss of all levels when dealing with anxiety & stress. #edugladiators
A4: Love & Logic and How to Talk so Kids Will Listen/ Listen so Kids Will Talk are my go-to books for behavior. I also like starting a temporary point sheet where students track how they think they did on certain behaviors through the day and earn a reward #edugladiators
A4. One of my fav practices in the classroom was being a "bucket filler". Ss had the opportunity to fill out a bucket filler slip for anyone, anytime, and I shared them at the end of the day. Kindness everywhere! Proactive way to combat conflict. @BucketFillers1#edugladiators
A4: The Capturing Kids’ Hearts @flipflippen framework, @BucketFillers1, and the book Better Than Carrots or Sticks have been useful resources to help sharpen my classroom management techniques. #edugladiators
A4. I use adhesive velco from the sewing store. I peel the off backing & place two this rows-one scratchy side, one smooth side- under the students' desks. For my doodlers, fiddlers & tactile learners, this built in focusing tool is soundless & works for all ages! #edugladiators
A3: Conflict doesn’t have to be negative. We grow when are presented with different ideas. “We can grow, or fix long-standing problems, if we listen only to the people with whom we already agree.” #EduGladiators
A4: I use these lifelines to address the reality of “life” outside my classroom impacting a student’s ability to engage. Sometimes grace can be the best strategy of all. We all need a little grace from time to time. #edugladiators
A4: I taught my kindergarten students about Brain in Your Hand. When they feel their animal brain is about to bust free, we have a few signals so they can let me know what they need. Attention, Affection or Alone Time. #edugladiators
It's simple, seems silly maybe, but highly effective. Can tie in to content too or be a brain break. Having Ss focus on singular items of specific colors as you walk helps still the mind and quiet the chaos they're dealing with internally for duration of the walk. #edugladiators
#edugladiators A4. Think time....helps them unwind. That little " me time" will always help students sort out thoughts, then they are ready to talk about it to the teacher or the peers concerned
Extension of Q4 ideas: What if equipping students to deal with external conflicts more constructively also builds their capacity to self-regulate when experiencing internal strife? #edugladiators
Absolutely!!!! It can be scary for teachers and certainly for kids. I think this is actually an undervalued and underevaluated performance attribute in school leaders! #edugladiators
#edugladiators UNTIL EDUCATORS SPEAK UP AND START PROTECTING THE PROFESSION OF TEACHING BY THOSE WHO ARE DESTROYING IT THEY WILL NEVER EARN THE TRUST OF PARENTS UNLESS THEY ARE PARENTS WHO JUST DON'T GIVE A SHIT AS LONG AS THEIR KIDS ARE NOT AT HOME BOTHERING THEM.

Leaders who aren't strongly committed to the vision are prone to change their mind often if they notice those around them seem to lack trust in their leadership. #edugladiators#leadupchat#moedchat#bmestalk

You are 100% correct! Some of our Ss are disrespected @ home & in the neighborhood on a regular basis! They don’t need this @ school as well! That’s why many lash out bcuz they can’t verbalize what is happening to them. #EduGladiators
A2: Leaders need to trust they ppl around them won't use their vulnerability as a weapon. It circles back around to the culture you've created. Do ppl have your back or are they anxious to see it moving away from them? #edugladiators
These passes usually come from the SSD department of my school. I do not need to distribute them myself as class teacher. Certain Ss, Tier 2/3, are given them in consultation/agreement with the school counselor as a behavioural strategy. They appear to work well. #edugladiators
A3: I know of a teacher who sets up mock court when there is a challenging opinion in the class - I love this idea as a way for students to learn to present their POV in a strong way! #EduGladiators
A3. I think in terms of values this is the unique aspect of the work, it should ideally align in terms of institution, one's values, and how that manifests through work. Words, actions, projects manifest those values. #edugladiators
A2) Consequences are based on choices. If the Ss make an effective or wise choice, the consequence is positive. If not, they could face a negative one. However, the Ss can turn a negative consequence into a positive one by changing their actions or attitude #edugladiators
