Hi Jamie!! SO grand to have your presence and genius here tonight! https://t.co/fryZJFUnTg
Hey ! Jamie from KC here!
A1) Lots of problem solving and creativity towards gaining a solution. Resilience to not give up and keep trying
Emily in Manhattan, KS hopping between my 💙 Monday night chats
Hey can't stay long, driving but had to say hi & watch along
Q1: A student centered, project-based learning process, geared toward soft skill development.
Hello Cory!! Great to see you again!! Thanks for leading here on .
A1 Design thinking - looking at a challenge, problem, etc.; formulating a plan and carrying it out.
A1:Always thinking about the next step. How can I make this better?!?!
Hi Kyle!! We're neighbors. Glad you're here!
Good Evening ! Lisa from Media Tech Specialist
Yes! It's a continuous improvement model! https://t.co/dizMDcp8e5
A1:Always thinking about the next step. How can I make this better?!?!
Q1: Design learning focusing more on student learning than teaching.
A1: getting that picture in your head to become a reality and all that falls between!
A1: Design thinking= no correct answer but many choices. Open ended thinking! Create mindset
A1: Design thinking is coming up with new solutions to existing problems - thinking creatively outside of the box.
Sorry for joining late. Alison, 2nd grade teacher in Lawrence
A1 Is student centered environment that looks at a problem or challenge & Ss work together to solve it.
A1: I think of the process of approaching any problem, about a structure to thoroughly and creatively address a problem
Yay!! Thanks for popping in and sharing your genius for even a bit! Love that propic-makes me smile every time
so glad you said that I' m curious too
Q1: Student centered, allows them to try multiple solutions to a problem and builds resiliency.
A1: Not sure. I've heard used to describe a problem solving approach. Is that the context here?
Thank you! I always learn so much
Yes! That's how I approach my lessons. Hoping to learn more tricks tonight to get my Ss to think this way
A1) student-centered process to explore, imagine, create, reflect and share
A1: Design learning focusing more on student learning than teaching.
A1: Design learning focusing more on student learning than teaching.
A1: Thinking with a solution in mind, knowing what you want the end result to be from the beginning
Awesome! https://t.co/LCtc9R8z3B
Q1: A student centered, project-based learning process, geared toward soft skill development.
The resiliency is the best part, IMHO. https://t.co/0gURCLhNET
Q1: Student centered, allows them to try multiple solutions to a problem and builds resiliency.
A1: responding to our world!
A1 Ss developing problem solving skills to succeed in an ever changing world
Design thinking solves problems not just through logic but through imagination, collaboration, innovation--with user in mind!
omg! omg! I'm so happy you're here!
I love how no idea is shot down. Rather each idea is given opportunities to develop. https://t.co/yAZKDS6cV8
Design thinking solves problems not just through logic but through imagination, collaboration, innovation--with user in mind!
I love this! And - we (7th graders & I) can do this! https://t.co/auL75NRAPm
Design thinking solves problems not just through logic but through imagination, collaboration, innovation--with user in mind!
Agreed! They need to know sometimes it's ok to fail. That's how we create some of our best ideas!
Yes, much like & processes https://t.co/YGfPhZTuov
A1 Is student centered environment that looks at a problem or challenge & Ss work together to solve it.
Sounds like what we r trying to do with maker/steam, etc this year. I'm intrigued! https://t.co/aBcizX031S
A1: Design thinking is coming up with new solutions to existing problems - thinking creatively outside of the box.
perhaps it begins with defining the problem and why it exists
having a choice in the output or product!
A1 application of multiple skills to solve real world problems, situations, and issues
A1: Would you say it is like "beginning with the end in mind?"
Tech coordinator for DeSoto schools joining in. Hoping to learn from the chat tonight.
Covey would be very happy with this process. :)
I think we are calling it many things, but we are creating thinkers
It's a supportive, + way of approaching world & learning. Systems, structures, fixed mindset can stifle
Sorry I'm running late. Randy, Kansas Commissioner here tonight!!
A1: being able to identify challenges, think fluently & flexibly, negotiate our ideas w/ others
A1 - design thinking for me is very cohesive. Ss should have no trouble seeing the scope and sequence of a unit.
Yes you can, Megan Kohlman! Great to see you tonight. Come back often...and use/check the hashtag !
A1 It sounds like it can be tailored to a students strengths, no one sized fits all.
Bret from Lenexa, Ed Leadership Consultant, soon to be Exec Director of KAESP and KASSP.
Kara 6th grade teacher here! Ready to learn!
"world" very important component!
not to potentially jump the gun but I would love like, a concrete example of how you incorporate design thinking in your class
Greg, HS ELA, from Kansas joining late. Looking forward to the chat
A2: leads to continued questions & higher levels of thinking!
A2: to understand the problem in order to view it from many perspectives
Like "negotiate" & "flexibility' for sure!
Michael McCambridge Director of Student Enrichment (Science Center, Team Building, Summer Camps)
A2: As I learn to see the world thru my 2-year-old's eyes, "Why" helps you make connections.
oooh! Thanks for sharing this :) It looks like an amazing resource
A2) You want to promote continuous learning. Keep the curiosity going. Don't want to settle, want to push students. Inquire more
A2: Encourages thoughtful creative and reflection DURING the creation process instead of just at the end when it's not as useful
Ss should be reflecting on knowledge being shared. Be a problem solver not a step follower! https://t.co/ooSzTtjXpg
A2: By repeatedly asking "why," the student/teacher is better able to identify the "root problem" to be solved.
A2: Insisting students ask why helps them develop critical thinking skills and a continual thirst for knowledge.
yes and human centered design sometimes has no known destination...you have 2 pivot for a user
A2: because you're refusing to accept the end of your own learning if you continue questioning
A2: Asking "why" allows Ss to explain reasoning with evidence learned. No more regurgitating facts. Higher level thinking skills
A2 whether it is why or another ? All ? are important. Never let Ss settle for because I said and Ts should never use as answer
Jumping in late. Susan, from KC, MO
Yes yes yes! https://t.co/uMfaxZF7P5
A2: As I learn to see the world thru my 2-year-old's eyes, "Why" helps you make connections.
A2: asking "why" keeps the convo focused on the issue. Must follow why with what can we do to get better?
A2: all great discoveries, etc. Start with "why" it's leads to solutions & problem solving
The (technology) tool doesn't matter, teaching comes first- From
A2) How you keep failing forward/moving forward, part of the reflect, redesign
A2 answering "why" will reveal strength or need for new direction
A2. To continue learning and encourage deeper questioning to find an answer with depth and hopefully spark more questions
A2: "Why?" allows for continued growth and understanding. My top 2 ?s in my class: Why? How do you know?
agreed- we don’t let our students struggle enough. We learn from our mistakes, thats why pencils have erasers
A2 - You have to ask Why so you can be their light or see where they are coming from. To help Ss make connections & Higher Level
Two great questions to be always asking Ss!
A2 The why? guides decisions and revisions.
A1: "Why" allows Ss to consider other alternatives and solutions to a given problem.
A2:It is important for Ss to ask why collaboratively, in order to hear and understand different perspectives
So much curric & testing is focused on the WHAT. Kids crave the WHY!! If we give them a solid WHY--purpose--they EXCEL!
A2: asking why can transform. move thinking forward.
I think we become stagnant in our learning if we don't ask the why questions
I like that you included the idea of hearing and understanding different perspectives!
Yes! Must keep students from settling for less than their best. https://t.co/6JgfxR8E3W
A2: asking "why" keeps the convo focused on the issue. Must follow why with what can we do to get better?
Yes. Ss need to learn that there is more than one way to view a challenge or a solution. https://t.co/jm3XpBvK3Q
A2:It is important for Ss to ask why collaboratively, in order to hear and understand different perspectives
When give up control and allow students to pursue their "whys", then unit or lesson usually becomes better than imagined
No struggle b/c of time and fact that we're focused on 'the what' per curriculum & testing reqs
A2: distills the problem, evolves your thinking
Absolutely. Ss build ownership in their learning through this process. https://t.co/BmDxKgZ8w2
When give up control and allow students to pursue their "whys", then unit or lesson usually becomes better than imagined
A2: we have to ask why because the goal is make the process transferable to future situations, not just get through the content
thanks- I could use your help in partnering together to make our Summer Camps no cost for kids
Love this! Such a vital step….We must be able to apply what is learned into new contexts
My job IS to create passion. -
Jumping in late here! Sam, ELA teacher from Buhler!
I want all curricula written in big ideas/WHY's with project resources avail. Like & preach!
https://t.co/6fHOnRV6AH
A1: A way to utilize Ss higher order thinking skills and allowing them to discover their ability to create, modify and succeed!
We have to let our students struggle if we want them to overcome both in the classroom and in life.
A3: Prototypes are what we model everyday. What/how the Ss interpret their learning.
A3 we have had great growth in our makerspace and PBL both require prototype. Biggest adventure has been the
It’s definitely important. We do some of that talking from the compass as well
Joining late too...assistant principal from Liberal High School
A3- The new Science Standards are all about the Engineering Process, which fits perfectly here
A3 I build & design right along with the Ss. I then have them reflect and ask them now..how can you improve it! Followed by Why?
A3: Hmm. Don't know that it is much, except in the case of we make scripts & 1st drafts of videos, and then we tweak from there
Yes! We did some Rube Goldberg projects while meeting the engineering standards. It was amazing what they created!
soooo is a prototype a model? or is it more specific? trying to catch on with the lingo etc.
Awesome! Modeling from the T is critical for student. https://t.co/OsjqAM7sVi
A3 I build & design right along with the Ss. I then have them reflect and ask them now..how can you improve it! Followed by Why?
A3: prototyping is often present within labs when testing hypotheses - what you think it will be vs the result
A3: Prototypes/models in my classroom allow the students to see how my mind works. Prototypes teach the "process"
A3 - A lot of prototyping in my classes come from Ss trying new language structures or making comparisons between L1 and L2.
A3 my Ss are poses with a problem and they have to design a solution to that problem.
A3: prototypes are first draft models. we should build something or add to something everyday.
My Ss then try to beat my design.
I agree, I need a little catching up! Trying to figure out what prototyping looks like in an ELA classroom.
When I think of this step I reflect on how this is the time when I see kids fail forward!
A3: Prototyping involves Ss going out on a limb and trying, struggling, and learning. Ss must embrace a culture of academic risk.
With 11 home languages in my class this year, I love this idea!
A3: prototype in our class is everyday. Our engineering classes make them on all assignments! Graphics create Comps for customers
glad I'm not the only one! This all sounds interesting but I need help visualizing how to apply it.
A3) Takes time w/ elementary if they new to these processes. Ss want to skip but learn over time it is needed!
A3: often prototypes in 1st looks like play, ss are learning apps, skills etc before application
A3: I preteach the tech we use in class & will assign a smaller activity to practice it before a bigger proj. later
Any new initiative/lesson is a prototype- until we have a chance to implement, collaborate, reflect, and improve the process.
A3: prototyping is a critical piece in making the process authentic, to improve the design, DT is not just a hypothetical exercise
Yes! Only two newcomers so that helps! I love my diverse school!
depends on the situation. In some cases, it is a physical model, in others, it could be an outline or draft
I have not… I’ve only be in KS 3 years.. I’m not even sure where Greenish is
You could role play literature you read and recreate situations
with prototype/1st Draft/ etc.. Ss then need to reflect. Then you have to ask the why &then the how to help them move forward
A3:Ss need to understand prototypes aren't always the end result!
You sparked an idea for vocab where I leave a space for the word in their L1 or send home to have Ps share ahead of time
Agree, but hard to get young students out of old habits-challenge but continue the Whys? & Qs to dev DT. https://t.co/GcXfNJmSup
A3: prototyping is a critical piece in making the process authentic, to improve the design, DT is not just a hypothetical exercise
Thx! Today I had Ss write about a prompt, but not the answer. Ss wrote about organizing and the thinking behind it.
A4: "yes and" tells me you think there's something more to say "yes but" tells me you think there's an exception to what I said
Didn’t even know there was a Pittsburg KS.I’m a little embarrassed.Obviously need to brush up on KS cities lol
I've Been to Its AWEOSOME!
Yes! And that it's okay if it's not perfect first try! https://t.co/7NeB48xOfT
A3:Ss need to understand prototypes aren't always the end result!
"yes and" seems more positive, "yes, but" seems more negative to me...
A2Build a student-lead environment. Who better to teach them in a way they understand best than themselves? They can teach us too!
A4: instead of either, I prefer to say...hmm interesting, why? That really makes them ramble on all their ideas :)
I use prodigy math. I control what types of questions but I let kids struggle. When they figure it out that is learning on them💯
A4) In yes, you are finalizing answer. With yes, but, you are forcing students to think more and take it further
A1: A way to utilize Ss higher order thinking skills and allowing them to discover their ability to create, modify and succeed!
A4: great advice BUT hard to remember all the time. I wish I could at least
A4: "Yes, but" means you did something wrong.
A4: Saying "yes and" validates Ss thoughts and builds upon their contributions.
A4: Seems like "yes and" continues the conversation while "yes, but" restricts.
A4 yes & shows that they were correct but could elaborate; yes but insinuates that part of the answer was correct
Hey everyone! Michael Koonce here, Director of Learning Services with Greenbush.
A4: "yes and" keeps the idea going. "Yes, but" puts an idea to rest.
A4:"yes and" seems more positive, "yes, but" seems more negative to me...
I love this idea! Such an easy way to draw more out of their brains!
A4: validates thinking, appreciates contributions, encourages the synthesis of new ideas & moves us forward
A4: I was taught in college never to say "but" after a positive comment. The Ss sees the response as a negative. "And" = more...
A4: yes and makes it sound like there's more to it, yes but makes it sound like it's partially wrong. Both create reflection
Hello David and welcome to ! Leavenworth!!
Hello David and welcome to ! Leavenworth!!
Does "yes, but" restrict or point out wrong, or could it identify that another perspective exists?
A4 "Yes and” encourages more thinking and discussion… “Yes, but” discourages growth in thinking and creativity
We will see how their paragraphs turn out on Wednesday! :) Writing about thinking.
A4: "Yes, and" is additive - looking for more information. "Yes, but" is subtractive (?)...something needs to be changed.
A4 I prefer the "yes and" to allow for a different line of thinking or continue the thinking & the conversation.
A4 My mind is always blown but what a simple word choice switch does to the learning environment.
"Yes, and" invites collaboration and synergy.
A4: "yes and" is positive and encourages further productivity. "yes but" is negative and would end that momentum
A4: yes and continues. yes but stops.
A4b: I think both have their place, but I definitely try to use "Yes, and" more often.
A4:instead of using either phrase, I think it's important to ask them why they are using ideas and how they plan to implement them
I crave reflection as a learner. Time to write/think/draw/blog, let new learning/worldviews settle into me.
I love it when Ss work together.
On a sidenote, KU is up 32-11 over Texas. : )
A4) more than "Yes, and" I try to always ask a question. Validates then challenges the next step.
A4: "Yes And" reinforces to students that sometimes the best answer isn't the first answer and encourages perseverance.
interesting meme. So true. Let them try and fail and they can be challenged and be successful! https://t.co/1vowBWgRWH
A4 "Yes, and" allows the student to be proud of their work, but allows them to recall/find out what they may have forgotten/missed
Hello Ashley! Happy you're here and sharing your genius/brilliance/eduawesomeness!
A4 - “yes, and” helps me illustrate additional possibilities. “Yes, but” helps me with correcting specific errors.
Q5 is live in 1 minute. :)
A4: Yes but-sounds too negative. Yes and-sounds like you're brilliant & here's more you could add to make it even better!
Inspiring discussion tonight! Love the depth of discussion on teaching/learning!
"Yes, and" let's see a win @ Texas to gain an outright Big 12 title. https://t.co/3f6cfxLOCK
On a sidenote, KU is up 32-11 over Texas. : )
A4- Yes And is seen more as positive feedback- yes but needs to be prefaced with a quality relationship with that student first
"Yes, but" may be heard as "no"
I'm watching the Voice, Chatting here, and following the game on my phone.
YOU are briliant! Exploring & connecting as educators expands our minds and we naturally take it to our kids!
A5: I post projects from my classes on my YT channel, my website, Twitter, send to parents, Instagram, share with other classes
I think that has to impact it. Relationships and classroom environment.
A5: parents, other teachers, admin, public, experts in field. Raises the bar over presenting to teacher and peers.
ask me how you get results. It's ALL RELATIONSHIPS! Kids will perform if they are safe and trust you. Be a teacher, not a friend
A4 Ss need to know you appreciate their effort, but a politely redirecting them with an open ended question would be good, too! :)
A5) Experts in the field, community members, classes in other schools or around the world, family members
"Yes, but" may affirm Ss suspicions that it's your process, there is in fact a right answer you've been waiting for them to find
A5: When kids know someone other than Ts will see, they work harder & feel like work is more meaningful (just like adults!)
A4- Yes and is seen more as positive feedback- yes but needs to be prefaced with a quality relationship with that student first
A5: depends on the task, but I have found that Ss produce better work if the audience is outside their school
A5: Community members as well as faculty members from a nearby college, all from related areas of study/expertise
Building relationships is key! https://t.co/v9WObJHkPg
ask me how you get results. It's ALL RELATIONSHIPS! Kids will perform if they are safe and trust you. Be a teacher, not a friend
A5: Share your work with the world! Blogs, Social Media. Share with the Ss peers. That may be the SS most important audience.
sometimes kids don't want work shared other than with you. I get kids to write but they don't want to share. But they are writing
A5: Would YOU work really hard on a video if you knew only your boss would see it & decent was enough to make him happy? Doubt it.
A5: presenting helps Ss take ownership of their learning. Ss can present to peers through a blog or through Skype.
A5 Ss parents so that they can see the amazing ways their kids are thinking and creating
A5: At my last school, Ss put together design proposals for the podcast studio. Presented to Supe and SB. Gives Ss purpose
A5: Authentic audiences. An audience that will truly gain from the presentation makes learning much more relevant.
A5: presenting to outside people connects the community to the school & can motivate Ss to increase effort levels.
A5: the user! annnnd designers, entrepreneurs, artists, anyone who mentored them along the way
Gotta run but will be checking back in to see more answers. Thanks to everyone for sharing...I learned a lot tonight! Good stuff!
Ss told me they work harder when other Ss see their work. Not as worried when sharing with their own Ts https://t.co/KDD81sUMl3
A5) Experts in the field, community members, classes in other schools or around the world, family members
A5: Anyone who will listen, read, and provide positive feedback for our Ss! Help Ss think beyond the classroom and school!
I also try and give my Ss a choice about how they will present their learning.
Agree. Unless it's s/th they're creating/doing for entire school--to solve problem, improve a process, or an innovation.
A4 yes, and is more positive and opportunistic for students.
A5: My Ss have produced proj. for elem Ts to use in class, muli-media pres for Ts to use @ conferences, & love when I share online
A5: tweet it out! Welcome visitors! This got my superintendent, other past Ss, and Ts out to a Cell Museum my kids put on.
Letting students publish or create work for an audience gives their learning and creating a purpose!
A5: our big engineering project the Ss present in front of a business panel from outside school. A chance to showcase their talent
A5 Share your wor..model for Ss. It not only changes Mindset but teaches others to be Positive Digital Creator not just a consumer
A5: I've found skype and visits from professionals Ss have sought out to be very powerful, let the kids plan/lead the conversation
I know a Soc Studies teacher who shares on social media , and both Ss and parents love it
Ss love when arrange a Skype call and they are able to teach another class. They are presenting, but have empowered more students
A5: this is something that I need to promote more. Blogging and other authentic audiences will improve the experience
Bye Catherine! Have a great evening. See you around the Twittersphere. :)
A5: stakeholders, parents, experts. Ss will raise their level of engagement
as will "Should" and "Need." Delete those words, please. Focus on positive intent. Possibility Thinking https://t.co/h98KItESia
A4: "yes and" is positive and encourages further productivity. "yes but" is negative and would end that momentum
I meant Share your work... not wor---tired eyes.
A5 - putting up student work in the hallways is a great way to highlight what students are learning and to give audience
A5 Google ISLLC standard 1 - when properly implemented then you have a school “community” that thrives.
Amen! Hello Dayna. Great ideas, suggestions. https://t.co/hMihjfO17U
as will "Should" and "Need." Delete those words, please. Focus on positive intent. Possibility Thinking https://t.co/h98KItESia
A4: "yes and" is positive and encourages further productivity. "yes but" is negative and would end that momentum
My son (6) just said today; "but when will I USE all of this learning? All I do is bring it home"
A5 Future students are a particular class would be motivated by seeing the work of those who are older than them
came to a 1st grade presentation. Students said it's one of highlights of yr. Authentic audience means a lot
A5: S's sharing w/ another class in their school, district, state, country, or the world highlights commonalities / ignites lrning
A5: take Ss 2 an incubator & let them present 2 startups
Wow! We have been cruising along tonight! Great job
thank you for my first educational chat. Great experience. Looking forward to more.
A5) My Ss have started Blogs w/ intent 2 share later. Increasing Skypes. Currently I share w others/then share to Ss.
It was one of the highlights of MY year!!
My 1st grader never talks about a "favorite worksheet." She talks our ears off about the projects she works on.
Wonderful to hear! Join the family every Monday at 8:00 pm!
Q6 is our final question fix. Up next. :)
Man, that's a great question. His 'work' lacking authentic purpose and your 6 year old sees it.
A5: showcase on class FB page. Invite parents and community members. All glory and attention to the Ss. Ps love the photos
A5: PARENTS! They don't always get the good from their Ss day. We need to encourage kids to be proud of their hard work!
Ear-resistible comment there, Mark. :) https://t.co/nnthnxEetH
My 1st grader never talks about a "favorite worksheet." She talks our ears off about the projects she works on.
This is so important. Excellent Connection! Good 4 Ss to connect w/ community https://t.co/pdLhkLTfKH
came to a 1st grade presentation. Students said it's one of highlights of yr. Authentic audience means a lot
I want my kids to come back a few years later and tell me how something we did changed them. I teach from the hip!
Agree. Jumped in late and 1st time w . I highly encourage this group to continue when done w https://t.co/OCr9m8BiBz
Wow! We have been cruising along tonight! Great job
A5 Tell the world! Your Ss are smart, worthy of praise & deserve to be empowered! Find out specifically who they want to impress!
Preach it!! And you've done that with your kids, haven't you, ?! https://t.co/qCfy5W34J1
A5: take Ss 2 an incubator & let them present 2 startups
I saw somewhere that posting great projects on social media is the new "papers on the refrigerator".
Q6: Our an entire state...... :)
A6) It could make them not want to leave school and not want to miss a day because they are so excited about their learning
A6: too often my Ss want the quick and easy answer. Design thinking makes them work at it and find multiple entry points.
A6: Ss look forward to your class. I have a Ss who comes to one class (mine) the rest he is in the office. Makes a difference
A6 A wise man once said that if you just teach facts the iPhone can replace you- provide a structure where ss want to learn
Our is here on again. He came to your class, ? Of course! TY RW https://t.co/ef4vKeLCpC
came to a 1st grade presentation. Students said it's one of highlights of yr. Authentic audience means a lot
I've gotta go. Thanks for a great chat everyone! Until next week!
A6: develop leaders and creators, not followers.
A6: Students could focus more on learning and progress and less on grades.
A6 It would instantly give a greater purpose and motivation for learning and for Ss to stretch themselves.
A6 Design Thinking opens up new doors, windows, & paths that allow my Ss to grow into leaders & creators
Q6: Or an entire state..... :)
A6: I would love to see it become a natural way of thinking by the time Ss are in HS...or even MS
Anyone have a great PD book recommendation?
A6: Would teach great life skills like resiliency, and give kids a more real-world problem-solving solution
It sounds like it creates an environment for authentic learning, not memorize and forget
Thank you again for being here tonite & leading discussion, dreaming, planning, problem solving around !
I have 💯attendence daily. Make school FUN. Make memories that last a life time and kids will be successful in life
A6: It's amazing what has come out of our T sessions...K-8 buddy programs, restorative justice protocols, etc
my how time flies when you're having fun! Thank you, Mark.
A6 Taking the projects and activities I already do w/ Ss and evaluating how to add authentic design thinking
Also coming back 2 tell you a story to do w/ their exploration, etc. Then you've planted a seed!
A6 show me a class using the PBL model and Ill show you a class that designs and thinks! A4-
Thank you for the opportunity. I've learned so much from everyone tonight. https://t.co/SRC6vY0Yzi
