Interested in student-driven classrooms? Join Dr. Nancy Sulla @nsulla (author of Students Taking Charge, Its Not What You Teach But How, Building Executive Function: The Missing Link to Student Achievement, and more) and educators from all over in #LATICchat on Thursday nights at 8pm ET. We hope to bring together a community of educators to share insights, stories, examples, pictures from their classrooms, and more. We welcome all educators to join; no need to be running a #LATIC classroom.
Hey Tanya! Wow that is really cold for Florida. 60 and you all break out parkas so I am sure you all are wearing your long underwear! LOL! It is actually about the same her. Going to rain the next coupled days and oddly Sunday get up to 60! #LATICchat
A3: Systems thinking requires Ss to consider multiple concepts at one time, see multiple perspectives, make connections... and more. Students need as many opportunities as possible to gain these skills and abilities! #LATICchat#executivefunction
A3-It is definitely a higher order thinking skill through which students need to be able to conceptualize the world in order to achieve insights into complex interactions and problems. This type of thinking does not come easily to everyone but it can be taught! #LATICchat
Agreed Tanya! In order to do this Ss need to develop the #EF skills of being able to attend to multiple things which takes time and experience. #LATICchat
Nice! I think this would be great to make a poster of for a systems activity. You could laminate it and use dry erase markers and make it interactive. #LATICchat
A5: If, no, WHEN, students engage in #systemsthinking then the opportunities to build #executivefunction skills are limitless, especially in working memory, cognitive flexibility and problem solving. #LATICchat
A6: The English teacher in me loves this question! To truly appreciate a text - fiction or non-fiction - the reader has to see the components at work ... AND how writers weave them together to create a cohesive piece. #ReadingAndWritingRequireSystemsThinking#LATICchat
A6-Math is probably the original system. In order to arrive at the correct answer a system of steps needs to be followed and seeing the real world application of the math is a great lens to look through when thinking of it as a system. #LATICchat
A7: I love listening to Ss in #STEM and #STEAM schools describe in their #PBL products how they had to go back to the ideate stage when they had a problem simulating, but then could go ahead to advocate. They see the system at work! #LATICchat
I agree Tanya! I also love watching students grapple between ideating and sifting and thinkg through the cause and effect of their choices. #EF#designprocess#LATICchat
