This chat stemmed from a vision I shared with my school @DixieHeightsHS faculty. I want our school to be a place where ALL students want to come to school because it is a fun, supportive place where all students can learn. So we must think differently than we do now. #admin2b
A1: Many facets. Kids have to feel success to want to keep moving forward, so staying on level is vital! Expanding opportunities to include all types of learning experiences helps also. Finally relationships are important in the classroom #admin2b

A1: one way that has improved my classroom engagement has been Kagan Strategies and Socratic discussion. Kids are invested when they have a specific job in instruction. #admin2b

A1: Ensure students & parents truly know what your school offers. Research the best means of communication for reaching them, & help them discover their niche. #admin2b
I think kids disengage when they don’t feel success. When I was teaching math a big part of my success involved showing kids that they can do it #admin2b

A1: Read an article from Edutopia: Starting the day off with a simple relationship-building activity—welcoming students at the door—can increase academic engagement by 20% points while decreasing disruptive behavior by 9 percentage points. Relationships matter deeply. #admin2b
A1: Students are engaged and excited about learning and school when their teachers consistently deliver quality instruction and meaningful tasks. Principals need to model this and provide opportunities for Ts to develop. #Admin2B

A1: Learn the needs of my students and tap into the talents of my teachers to individualize instruction and create more meaningful experiences. #Admin2B
A2: Every student engages during the school week in a non-academic workshop to bring equity to extra -curriculars. Every kids has a “thing”!! High expectations for every student- no excuses! Relevant learning experiences with authentic purposes! #admin2b
A2 I don’t know exactly the details but stripping down the dividers between subject areas in HS would go a long way. Learning should not take place in silos. This could be science and math together and SS and English together. This would allow for more application #admin2b
#admin2b I love every kid has a thing. When they have their thing, they feel a sense of belonging which research shows impacts student learning, especially for at risk students

A2: Lots of cliches here, but no apologies! Change the culture. TRULY shift from being teacher-centered to learner-centered. We're almost 20 years into "21st c. learning." How much have we changed? #admin2b
A2: Always hard to create a “checklist” for the art of teaching but there are several essentials: maximizing instructional time, allowing for productive struggle, & teaching skills vs content are a few. #Admin2B
#admin2b I agree. Research shows that elementary are more engaged. A lot if their learning takes place with application across contents. Need to find ways to do that in HS

A2. Oh my. Well since I'm reading Focus: I'd have everyone commit to these non negotiables. What we teach. How we teach. Authentic literacy #admin2b@Boone_County@jlvw76

I think this answer goes along with Q1, as well! Each student should have their "place" & not just "get through school" without being a part of SOMETHING! #admin2b
A2: Establishing collaborative teams and giving teachers opportunities to meet together in those settings fosters positive collaborative climate. When we share with one another, we all improve. #Admin2B

A2 Create the best culture you can and then let the experts, your Ts work their magic. Be sure they, Ts & Ss, have the supports they need & the permission to try new things & make mistakes #admin2b
A3: Teachers are carrying out the mission- they will see the need for change! Listen to their ideas and build their leadership. Ts are the GAME CHANGERS!!!! #admin2b
A3: Be a people person. Invest in your teachers whenever possible. Learn about their lives, loves, and encourage them to grow by showcasing their talents. #Admin2B

A3 With leading any change in schools, it comes with a clear vision and the creating that shared vision with thoughtful implementation. I find that many initiatives work (or don’t) solely if there is commitment to the vision. #admin2b
A3 Create a strong common vision. We all need roadmaps. For some that might mean extreme change, but keeping the vision & the best interest of Ss is the fuel to stay on course. #admin2b
A3: I see no shortage of teachers willing to to school differently, so long as they are given adequate time to do so. Flying the plane while building it leads people to burn out easily—Find paid time for teachers to meet expectations #admin2b

#admin2b Interesting analogy with flying the plane while building it. I see the imagery but also think of Edison who failed 100's of times inventing lightbulb. He was failing while trying, but was learning along the way. Sometimes you just have to believe in process and go.

We have to model this if this is what we’re asking of our students. Can’t be afraid to try new things, work on our areas of need and collaborate together for success. #Admin2B
#admin2b thanks everyone for their participation. I love the ideas! Take them to your school leaders and do things differently because it is what is best for students! Looking forward to next week!
