This twitter chat stands for "Wins And Losses Ed Chat" and will be a chat where students reflect on the previous week to celebrate victories and reflect on losses to turn them into victories.
Intros: Welcome to #waledchat! Introduce yourself, where you are from, your role in education, and tag a new friend you'd like to see join you here tonight! #waledchat
Hello all! Phil from Northern Virginia. I teach 7th grade US History II and am the #waledchat founder. Thrilled to be here with you all! Would love to see @MrSethWade@StineCaylah@StantonAlana here tonight!
Mike, Tech Integrator for Lake Shore CSD in New York. I'll tag @JoyceBronwyn into tonight's Wins & Losses EdChat. She is in the future over there in Australia so maybe she can come back in time and visit #waledchat for a few.
Good evening #waledchat group. Steph Dill elementary SPED T in Colorado. Thank full the rain we had today, but nice to see blue sky and sunshine for the evening.
Hey Mark! Intros: Welcome to #waledchat! Introduce yourself, where you are from, your role in education, and tag a new friend you'd like to see join you here tonight! #waledchat
My biggest win from the past month was the effort one of my boys put into his state ela and math exams. My other kids refused to take it and were pressuring him to misbehave. #waledchat
A1: Outside the classroom it would be presenting at my first conference with @PHausTech. In the classroom? It would be turning around a rowdy class, so now they are positive workhorses! #waledchat
A1: Seeing the huge growth in my students' reading and writing. Now that they are all reading on grade level, they get more excited to participate in whole group reading activities! #waledchat
A1: I changed the way my classroom is run and it’s given me so many more opportunities to get to know my students and connect with them on an individual level. I love building those relationships #waledchat
A1 Attending CanConnect2018 was my biggest win, got to meet some of my @Buncee friends, and @m_drez and @jmattmiller in person 😀 it was fabulous 😀 #waledchat
A1: having a struggling student build a steam engine out of legos and explaining how it works through flipgrid - he took the initiative from start to finish. #waledchat
Hey! I teach at Freedom. I can’t remember how I found this chat but it was about a month ago and I always look forward to chatting with @MrPStrunk and #waledchat
A1: got everyone blogging in my classes. Oh, and I got my room cleaned up after #RubeGoldberg machines! Last year I think it took me a month! This year it was done the day it ended! #waledchat
A1 I survived....kidding 😜😉
I would say my biggest win was making the decision to teach my last unit with a ton of Ss choice. Now to see if it pays off this month. #waledchat
A1: very pleased with some student success on the final benchmark test. Some of these kids are still working so hard even after seeing success after success. #dontsettleforlessthanyourbest#waledchat
A1~ #waledchat...noticed an increase in S leadership skills where the focus has been on teamwork, building each other up & showing kindness with minimal teacher prompts ❤️
A1. It's a crazy time of year as t my school. This week I received several positive "things" from alumni. It's nice to know that you have made a difference to someone. #WaledChat
A1: Learning from some incredible authors during our annual Authors in April event. Middle school was lucky enough to have the incredible @nielsenwriter. Ts were also able to hear from @jewell_p_rhodes. INSPIRING. #waledchat
A1 Okay, this is my personal. My win came in the form of an email. It was nice to be acknowledged by a stranger. It was random and unexpected. #WaledChat
Another win.....empowering my 7th grade Ss to create Renaissance projects and letting them run with it. I love what I’m seeing. Coding, painting, LEGO creations, commercials wi he green screens. #waledchat
A2: After presenting at the conference, @LBStrunk and I went out to eat to celebrate. After turning the rowdy class, I called LB and told some members of my team how happy I was see the class engaging in work more than before! #waledchat
A2 Oh no, I forgot to celebrate! Anyone else just get caught up in the day to day and not take a moment to enjoy the victory? Guilty here. Maybe I will raise a cup (of coffee) and say cheers to all of the Ws from April. Thanks for the reminder #waledchat.
#waledchat Thanks for the intro @m_drez hello from the land down under Everyone. Currently waiting for my kids to come in from recess after they had massive day yesterday teaching the teachers, my class taught 54 uni teachers how to inquire and use flipgrid
A1. Breaking the ice with the quiet /shy Ss, and finally having a long conversation with him! Hearing him carry on a long conversation with me, was fantastic! #waledchat
A2 I have not celebrated it. I did feel a strong sense of pride that reminded me of a few things. LOL but I just might celebrate it this weekend. #WaledChat
I went to Buffalo the day before the conference, shopped, had dinner and enjoyed some time with my daughter. Had a blast at the conference win, win 😀 #waledchat
A2: praising their success and effort. Also, going out of my way to help help answer their questions. Show them that I am willing to put forth just as much effort to see them reach their goals! #waledchat
#waledchat A1 the biggest win for me is to see my kids lead learning and be the teachers. I teach the toughest of the toughest and they are world leaders very proud teacher at the moment.
A2 AND A1:
Kid was misbehaving in class and had to do a virtual lab instead of the hands-on.
Called parent, got to the bottom of the situation and had a great convo.
Ss apologized and we were able to work out the problem. Celebration: letting him DO the dissection. #waledchat
A2: I was around saying how cool it is to see everyone posting and tagging. Sometimes I just sit and scroll through all of their posts. It’s marvelous... next year it will start on day 1!!! #waledchat
A1. Howdy #waledchat from Barbara, school counselor in TX. THIS little guy decided on his own to write thank-you notes to our custodial staff. Came by to ask if I had some paper he could use. #Kindness for the WIN at @BalesInterm@friendswoodisd#kindnessmatters
A1: My students have been really engaged and happy for this time of year. It has been super wonderful.
A2: Celebration is easy---we are enjoying our time in class together. #waledchat
A3: I have had a project for two classes stumble to the finish line. Discouraging after such a good first year delivering this curriculum. Next year will be better, and I am pumped about our next unit. #teched#waledchat#STEMeducation#makered
#waledchat A3 Lots and lots of praise and self assurance and Shari g their success with the world to say any kid can learn but especially any kid what whatever academic ability can lead.
A2: So many aha’s today as we dissected frogs. Students were saying “This is so cool!”
They’re learning. Learning is super cool.
It called for a “cell”ebration. #waledchat
A2: I celebrated my newly formed student relationships by emailing home how proud I was of some of my outstanding students! (I also called my own mom... she’d like me to share that) #waledchat
A2: Honestly I cried a little, really happy tears for a job well done by the S. I shared his writing piece with anyone who would take the time to look at it. Best of all I got the joy of seeing his face when he showed me his work, priceless. #waledchat
Woah! I tagged you but didn't think you'd make it given the time difference. You are an edu super hero! Love the pics of your 5/6J student leaders. Only a few days away from #Flipgrid2030WR. #waledchat
A3 One loss I experienced this month was giving an Ignite talk at a conference & having audio not play when I was expecting it to. Forced me to think on my feet & get creative. Wouldn't trade the experience. Loved getting to share the stage with inspiring educators. #waledchat
A3: I know I am not alone in this, but my patience has been wearing, so I have been taking some misbehaviors personally when they don't need to be. I have been having to redirect a lot (all while trying to find new ways to reach Ss needs), which has been tiring me. #waledchat
A3: I wrote a test that I thought was super straightforward and totally doable... they were so overwhelmed and frustrated and it broke my heart! #waledchat
A3: I’m struggling to come up with just one. Things happen every day but it’s all a matter of perspective. I like to see “losses” as learning opportunities, so they never really feel like a “loss” to begin with. (usually!) #waledchat
A2: I took him straight to Rocio, so he could give his thank-you to her in person. I called his mom to tell him what a loving child she is raising, and I posted it on our school's SM page so we could all celebrate his #kindness. #waledchat
A3: I discovered a loss today - I don’t give homework but I have one class with a lot of missing work and with the end of the year fast approaching I feel like I’m losing them. #waledchat
A3: This past month has been stressful. I have death anniversaries of so many loved ones in April/May. I have let some negative things persuade me and I have really had to work hard to be my bubbly self. However, I have still managed to smile. Kids deserve that. #waledchat
A1: I’m not an “educational teacher” however, I guess you could call me a “Life teacher” 😂. Joking aside, I got to present my “Life Story Presentation” at the local hospital and think I inspired many to follow their dreams no matter the circumstances 💪🏻😁 #waledchat
A3: still having a tough time figuring out how to motivate some Ss to give their best effort and focus as we prepare for the state test. I refuse to force compliance so I need to find a way to inspire instead #waledchat
A3: Loss of sleep and time. I have been on the go and learning/creating a lot, so that means trying to get caught up on grading and loosing sleep. Viscious cycle. I don't do well on little sleep for extended periods. #waledchat
#waledchat A3 To see kids suspended because teachers don’t know how to build relationships with students. I teach my kids for 21 hours but with 1 hour with some else they can get in so much trouble. All about relationships and expectations. Love my kids so much.
#waledchat ...A3~ loss of my confidence for a few brief moments in response to some negativity spewed at me by a co-worker. Been there. Done that. Got the ticket! Never again!
A3: This month has been tough w/ state testing, daughter graduating, and, you know, LIFE…& I haven’t handled it well: slacked off on eating well or taking time to exercise/hike, or mental/spiritual care! #summerscoming#waledchat
A4: Re-timing the unit next year. This year has been lots of wonderful learning experiences and success, but this project fell flat...and it's amazing material. I'll get it right soon enough. #waledchat#makerspace#makered#TechEd#STEMeducation
A3 My biggest loss has to be finding out that some of my ELs are returning to their countries starting in two weeks. I hate when this starts to happen. #waledchat
A4: I'll take it as a reminder that at the end of the year sometimes students get cabin fever, and remember that at the end of the day I'm teaching 12 year olds not 21 year olds. #waledchat
A4 It gives me a good personal example of being thrown a curveball and taking a swing. Enjoy the moment. I learned this from Power of Moments book. Not everything will go as planned. We must continue to swim past the drop off, as referenced in my talk. #waledchat
A4: So my loss was definitely more of a personal, but I think I can still use it to jumpstart my summer AND remind myself that I handle stress (LIFE) so much better when I take care of myself! #waledchat
Please remember to take care of yourself. I did not do this well at all last year and it caught up to me. I'm better for it but it could have been avoided. At least you recognize it. I didn't. #waledchat
A3. One of our projects, was a little challenging. Weaving 2 art pictures together. They ended up taking home the project to finish as a fun activity. #waledchat
A4: I had some great conversations with the guys. Tennis, like many things in life, isn't just about winning. It is experiencing things as a team, learning from defeats, and being a better person on the other side.
#waledchat
A4: Stopped and realized how I need to reorient into a positive mindset, focus on the growth students have made, and the great impact we can make each day. Remember my purpose. #waledchat
A4: I always offer test corrections for partial credit back if they demonstrate understanding, but I also gave them the opportunity to ask general content questions or take some time to review skills before I gave them time to finish the next day #waledchat
A4 We talked with my Ss and used the opportunity to deal with some rocky relationships and learn the importance of being there for each other as our family away from family. #WaledChat
Happens all the time. Reflect, reboot, and recover. I think that should work. No way those Ss remember one lesson that didn't work. I bet some even loved it. We can be our own worst critics. #waledchat
A2: We celebrate our growing readers with a whole class clap out and the student gets paid! (Not real 💰- “Kirk Cash” - kids use to buy things from the class/school menu) #waledchat
A4: I started correcting this loss today - posting grades and typing comments to “please take care of this assignment and turn in by....” I need to be better with reminding to submit assignments through Classroom. I’m hoping the westward expansion unit will engage them #waledchat
This happens to me a lot. I draw a line in the sand and say that I will not work past a certain hour, but I get stressed and throw it out the window. It is hard to stick with it, sometimes. I am getting better about it, but this season has been hard. #waledchat
A4: I'm not sure if I can turn my problem of practice into a win this year, but I will collaborate with the next grade level up to build from the foundation I worked to set! ❤️ #waledchat
A4~refuse to engage in negativity and continue to surround myself with people who lift others up, are kind & are all about putting Ss first and fostering healthy, positive relationships #waledchat
A4: it comes down to persistence. I will continue conversing with Ss until I can find what it takes to get them going. Need to make sure my belief in their abilities is blatantly apparent. #waledchat
You'll always be with them wherever they are. That is the power and impact in what we do. I agree it would be much better with them still around. That's gotta be tough. #waledchat
A4 I am changing my approach for the last unit, hopefully I can get all Ss on board to learn about Human Body. I have lots of fun stuff planned #waledchat
A4 I am being strategic about how we are working and how I am responding to Ss. Some Ss are really struggling to get back on track and it is up to me to reset the expectations and rebuild our community #waledchat
A3: student moved in & out of the district w/in 2 weeks. I wanted to cry when he gave me a teary eyed hug & told me he was glad to have been mine. (I always tell s’s, “I’ll keep you anyway” when the don’t have an answer or if they made a not great choice) he was great #waledchat
A4: with not being able to get my groups as much I can work to get into classrooms and work with Ss more informally and see if they are making transfer of learning to other environments. #waledchat
A1: When one of my Ss wrote me letter about how she felt about me and the relationship we had built. She thanked me for my support and encouragement and making her a better and more confident reader. #waledchat#LoveLiteracyLearning
A5: It's the Apple Blossom festival in Winchester! @LBStrunk and I will go to the parade, and maybe get some delicious food from the vendors downtown! Always a fun time :) #waledchat#AppleBlossom
A5 Our daughter turns 2 yrs old Monday. Why not celebrate early this weekend. We'll hit the playground, have a dance party (most likely to Elmo) and get some ice cream. #waledchat
A5: Go to the Apple Blossom Parade on Saturday and enjoy all the excitement of seeing absolutely everyone in pink and green all weekend. #waledchat#thebloom
A3: Although I make school and learning fun, I feel like my kids have gone a little crazy! The ones that never did before, now have some summer fever maybe??? #CrazyKids#waledchat
A5: This weekend is all about family. Birthday celebrations for my dad and my niece. First watching of my niece playing soccer and relaxation with everyone.
#waledchat
Super excited to announce the #Waledchat End Of School Year Spectacular! Check out the fun guest hosts we will be having along the way! @MrsAsztalos takes the helm next week!
A2: I took a photo, sent it to her mother and thanked her mother for raising such a thoughtful child. I also shared it with my work BF @khoggardGRT who knows how hard I've been working with this particular student #waledchat#LoveLiteracyLearning
Absolutely. A definite plus to the technology for a quick connection. I didn't realize their families weren't with them. That would make it easier to know they are going back to family and friends, for sure! #waledchat
Yes. They shoot themselves in the foot sometimes. You could try giving them a quiz the next day that has some of the exact questions they worked on for "homework," or allow them to use their homework on the quiz. They will see the direct payout. #waledchat
A4: I just continue to stay positive and talk to the kids — and tell them I believe in you and know you are a leader...so lead. Lead the way...not the cray cray. (I don’t say that, but sometimes am thinking it! 😝) #WaledChat
A5: We are having Read At The Knoll in our attendance zone. I’m painting faces. We’re celebrating literacy and kicking off summer reading. I love seeing Ss outside school. Sunday is MINE—but I must finish Nat’l Board. #waledchat
Thanks for another great convo! I am very excited to take the reins next week and lead #waledchat to talk about Growth Mindset. It is my first chat to lead, and I can't think of a nicer group to start with! Thanks for the support @MrPStrunk
