Opt 1 Q: How do leaders work with others who don’t have a sense of urgency; satisfied with status quo and difficult to motivate? How do we find the balance of coaching and support to hard conversations and push to rise above compliance? (@bethhill2829) #Opt1LearnLAP#LearnLAP
A1 - Obviously give them choice and options that allow for growth. Also, provide enough modeling that they know at least some of a path to start on. #LearnLAP
Opt 1 A1: Find common ground and build relationships. Leaders need to be open in their expectations and communicate their shared vision for all to believe. #LearnLAP
A1: When I open pandoras box and let them pick I never know what they will come up with. Some need coaching. For some it's executive function. My 5ths took to cooking last month. Considering diving in deeper. #Opt4LearnLAP#learnlap
A1 options 4 By giving Ss opps to explore on their own, I do #pbl and also thru #geniushour or simply selecting how to show learning helps #learnlap#opt4learnlap
#Opt1LearnLAP My message is: Care for kids; be gracious toward your colleagues; bring your A Game. Stepping into a collaborative model has helped me gain credibility. T owns content; I facilitate tech. Boots on the ground works. #LearnLAP
O4A1: We have to teach our kjds to be be consumer's that are critical. We have to expose our Ss to a wide variety of ideas, thoughts, careers, and let them figure out their own passion. #LearnLAP
Opt 4 Q1: In my opinion (right @burgessdave?), passion is super important. I talk about it all the time to students. I try to model the things I’m passionate about. How else can we inspire passion in students? #LearnLAP#Opt4LearnLAP
O4A1. To give Ss choices and let them use their voices. Let them test the waters discoving and exploring various topic areas until they find their passions! Use their voices and describe how they wish to progress on a passion project! #learnlap

#LearnLAP#option1learnlap Guskey says behavior changes, then student success is evident, THEN teacher attitudes change. Learn the work by doing the work.
Opt 1 A1: Give advice that has backing from either ed. psych. theorists or research. This proven advice will be hard to refute. However, it must be done graciously and humbly. #Opt1LearnLAP#learnlap
Definitely key words, gracious and humble. There is definitely a need for balance. At some point we may engage in a more difficult conversation to get to the root cause. :) #Opt1LearnLAP#LearnLAP
Opt 3 Potluck Q1: How do we Maximize learning till end of year/summer with partnerships with libraries, camps, etc? (@splowalski) #LearnLAP#Opt3LearnLAP
Opt 2 Q: What was something you tried this year that didn't go as planned? Share a roadblock, fail, or "What was I thinking?" moment. (@m_drez) #LearnLAP#Opt2LearnLAP
Opt 3 Potluck Q4: When a S refuses to do work in the classroom, what positive strategies do you use to get them focused and back on track? (@MrsAsztalos) #LearnLAP#Opt3LearnLAP
A1 Opt4: Provide rich cross curricular experiences for Ss with plenty opportunity for choice and voice. Breaking down the silos to show interconnectedness is powerful and using lessons to spring board into personal learning adventures. #LearnLAP
If you've read #LearnLAP and would like to connect with others at your grade level or in your position, add your name to the "Learn Like a PIRATE" PLN here: https://t.co/yqOsvPp2kv
Feel free to share the model here. I love giving Ss an authentic place to share thier work. Last year @Kelleyc16 had Ss choose their passion as a presentation project they shared with the whole K-5 building. It was awesome and I learned so much! #Opt4LearnLAP#LearnLAP

@Coachadamspe, @Rdene915, @kylelaurie, @Kelleyc16
A4 #LearnLAP I love seeing Ss outside of the classroom; it's another lens. Will ask them to tell me what they want me to know about them as learners, etc w @Flipgrid at the beginning of school year. I also have Station Rotations planned where I do a group interview. #EDUProtocols
A3 Co-own the classroom When the classroom is a place of shared learning there are more places for Ss to get feedback & have needs met Don't do it alone, use Ss & their experiences #LearnLAP
15 min goes by fast but you can still keep sharing #Opt1LearnLAP#LearnLAP How do leaders find the balance of coaching and support to hard conversations and push to rise above compliance? (@bethhill2829)
A1: At my work, McDonalds, we partnered schools with coupons for free happy meals when they read 5 books from either their school libraries or town libraries, many students came in to get their happy meals and were very excited about reading their books. #LearnLAP#Opt3LearnLAP
OPT4 Q1- Talking to kids, exposing them to a variety of learning experiences give them time to process their learning and thinking, and supporting their continued learning and/or changes in their interests. #LearnLAP
Opt 4 Q2: How do you use ‘give me 5s’ in your classroom? How do you guide Ss to manage challenges that arise with this empowering opportunity? (@egchapma) #LearnLAP#Opt4LearnLAP
I scheduled an independent PD for March and only 3 people ended up completing it. I just didn't put enough time with the participants to keep it meaningful. #Opt2LearnLAP#LearnLAP
Opt 4 A1 Exposure to problems (PBL), authentic work (experts in the fields), and product choices. Ss can discover passions that they did not know exsisted! #LearnLAP#champforkids
It's my first year doing it, I do it with my HS senior Math students. Every Friday they get to work on a project they picked. My kids are learning on their own, how to play piano, ukulele, dutch, German, apologetics, and becoming a YouTube. #LearnLAP#20time

Opt. 3 Q3: Keep teaching like every moment has urgency. Don't shift everything toward teaching to standardized tests.Share info w/ parents about programs Ss can engage w/ over the summer. #learnlap
Opt 3 Potluck Q1: How do we Maximize learning till end of year/summer with partnerships with libraries, camps, etc? (@splowalski) #LearnLAP#Opt3LearnLAP
A3 Potluck - Great Q @MikeSzczepanik. I don't have a clear answer to this so I am ready to see what comes through from others. I struggle here. I think leveraging tech where #edtech can help save time & energy here is worth efforts in the long run. #LearnLAP
O4A2. Give me 5's are used to check for understanding of material through communication by Ss to teacher. When severe challenges arise, we break down into small groups or work 1:1 to ensure comprehension and understanding is obtained through helping one another &ps. #learnlap
Yes, sometimes it means taking the time out of our really busy schedules but it's so worth it. The time you gain back is priceless. #Opt4LearnLAP#LearnLAP
A2: I think the biggest change in the next ten years will be the involvement of technology in our schools. I know that it has already started, I saw it in my high school and now in my field placement, hopefully it grows for the better #LearnLAP#Opt3LearnLAP
Opt4 A2: Hold class meetings where you discuss road blocks that are popping up and get feedback from other students as to how to solve them. Give them guiding questions to help them think through the issue at hand. Sometimes you have to teach them to drop back and punt. #LearnLAP
Opt4A2 - I call them something different, but daily you will hear Ss ask the class, “Can anyone show me how to...?” Ss feel permission to work together and help others. #learnlap
A1: Find out what they are passionate about and what makes them tick. They became a teacher for a reason. Find out why and help them read discover that. Give them choice and a voice in decisions. Ask for their input and use it! Make them feel like they matter.#LearnLAP
This is a challenge. The ebb and flow of classroom life and home creates a very real tension. Following strict rules about when to work at home helps me. When I get home it is family time until bed time. On weekends I plan a little work time during the day. #LearnLAP
Opt 3 Potluck A1: Promote these options to our ss and parents. In my area we have free library programs all summer long, Kids College at PDCCC, and camps at the YMCA. #LearnLAP#Opt3LearnLAP
Opt 3 Potluck Q1: How do we Maximize learning till end of year/summer with partnerships with libraries, camps, etc? (@splowalski) #LearnLAP#Opt3LearnLAP
Opt 4 Q1: Provide time, space & resources for Ss to research things they are interested in & wonder about. Allow for S choice in ways of presenting info. #LearnLAP#Opt4LearnLap
Honstely in HS setting been trying to figure how to use this strategy better. The Spanish Teacher has a clever little Spanish phrase that she asked for her students input on. #LearnLAP#Opt4LearnLAP
Opt 4 Q2: How do you use ‘give me 5s’ in your classroom? How do you guide Ss to manage challenges that arise with this empowering opportunity? (@egchapma) #LearnLAP#Opt4LearnLAP
I don't know about you but I'm having a ton of fun but feeling a little overwhelmed. Trying to participate in all 4 Options. :) Thanks goodness I can look at archives. #LearnLAP
O3 A3 - Always remember that students gave a million different skill sets. Trying to fit everything into one big box will never work. It is the process that is important. Growth is the key driver for learning. #LearnLAP
I think that to fit the needs of all students it is necessary to try new genres of teaching. Recently I looked into Gamification in the classrooms and I think this is just one of many ways to involve students but also isn't too taxing on the teachers. #LearnLAP#Opt3LearnLAP
A3 I think the biggest change will be in standard testing and report cards. With more of a push to STEM, STEAM I think the above is going to go through a major overhaul #LearnLAP
Our YMCA has some great options. Our Public Library is also an awesome resource. Summer rec too. So many great options. @Don_Watkins does great things w his Library. #Opt3LearnLAP#LearnLAP
#LearnLAP. A1 expose them to many different things. Try #genius hour or #PBL’s. Help them to step outside of their comfort zone, sometimes takes a little push!
Potluck- I think the biggest change we will see is more virtual experiences, more creating and making, more individualized learning experiences and self driving cars of course! #LearnLAP
This experience can only help things turn out better in future runs. I think 3 completions can still be looked at as a win for those 3 educators. #LearnLAP
Amazing for the teachers and life changing for the kiddos! I had a 1st gr tell me that being a botanist was how she would combine her ❤️ of science and drawing! “I can’t wait to create field journals with diagrams of flowers!” #LearnLAP#champforkids
It is TOUGH!!!! I think it helps when we can be consistent with our daily interactions and visibility. If we are present, we can connect. That helps coaching, and makes hard conversations more meaningful because others know your heart. #Opt1LearnLAP#LearnLAP
15 min goes by fast but you can still keep sharing #Opt1LearnLAP#LearnLAP How do leaders find the balance of coaching and support to hard conversations and push to rise above compliance? (@bethhill2829)
A4: I find it hard to try and motivate them, because what worked for me as a student hasn't worked for them. But, I am open to any suggestions and hope to find new and positive ways to motivate any student who refuses to do work. #LearnLAP#Opt3LearnLAP
Check your local library, I found out that ours you can check one out, with my educator card I was able to check it out for an extra 6 weeks for my student #LearnLAP#Opt4LearnLAP

O4A3. Empowering a Ss is giving them the courage and risk to take over their own learning without being told what they have to do or when to do it. They control it. Engagement is a S fascinated in the love of learning of the subj. matter by doing things w/ their hands #learnlap
Opt 4 Q3: Biggest misconception among some Ts is that S empowerment= chaos, disorder & Ss learning less. S empowerment instead leads to increased S engagement. #optrLearnLap#learnlap
Opt 4 Potluck A2: Technology! Without a doubt there will be things we haven't even thought of yet and our ss will be doing them. I am also hoping for the pendulum to swing away from testing and towards authentic learning and growth. #learnlap#Opt3LearnLAP
If you're around Twitter tomorrow (TUESDAY) at this time (7pm Central), please join @mrnasife for #5thchat as we discuss "Preparing for End-of-Grade Testing: Keeping it Engaging & Positive."
ALL GRADES WELCOME!!!
#LearnLAP
A1: Wet blanket answer here. We're here to give them a liberal education....meaning broad based. Get to know what they are passionate about (at the moment), but do not peg them as the "topic A" person. A teen w/out a passion is: a teenager. No biggie. #learnlap
Coaching is huge, we do not spend enough time supporting ourselves and T leaders as coaches. Definitely an area I would like to improve in. #Opt1LearnLAP#LearnLAP
It is TOUGH!!!! I think it helps when we can be consistent with our daily interactions and visibility. If we are present, we can connect. That helps coaching, and makes hard conversations more meaningful because others know your heart. #Opt1LearnLAP#LearnLAP

When I train a staff, I announce that I can come and teach w/ them. I will model, coteach, stick arnd in case of "tech issues"! I also create a newsletter for the T homepage. There's a Google Form where T's can request training for themselves, dept, staff.@Katiemc827#LearnLAP
Pot luck 4- A4-Ask something the Ss is interested in or can be successful at...disarm them support them, then the Ss will be inclined to get back on track for learning #LearnLAP
Not sure if same thing that I so, but basically you give time back to the kids to learn ANYTHING that they are passionate about. Trying to empower students to own their learning with the things they are passionate about. #LearnLAP#Opt4LearnLAP

A2 O3 I think there will be a bigger push for individualized instruction supported by tools (#edtech), time, and space. Of course, it will require a culture shift. #edreform#LearnLAP
That's what I think too! I see how much tech has changed just since I started teaching 10 years ago... From overheads to smartboards and from computer labs to laptop/ipad carts. #LearnLAP#Opt3LearnLAP
I struggle with this-to dig deep to find the strength to nudge them forward with support, rather than mandate “more”. The goal is to help every person feel the desire to be better. Consistency in expectations will make those status quo peeps feel uncomfortable. #LearnLAP
Opt 1 Q: How do leaders work with others who don’t have a sense of urgency; satisfied with status quo and difficult to motivate? How do we find the balance of coaching and support to hard conversations and push to rise above compliance? (@bethhill2829) #Opt1LearnLAP#LearnLAP
https://t.co/oEZtYsxPHm used to empower Ss can be basically anything, technology, understanding of a technique, leading a discussion, where the Ss feels empowered to help someone who is having problems, discussing a topic, solving problems, leading the way for others! #learnlap
Opt 3 A3: I think it's important to leave work at work most of the time. I am so much happier when I come home and am present with my family. My ss get an energetic mindful teacher who is better able to listen to and meet their needs. #LearnLAP#Opt3LearnLAP
I'm trying to take email and Twitter breaks on the weekend. It's hard but it's also helping me be present with family and read more! #LearnLAP#Opt3LearnLAP
Opt 4 Q 3: What is the biggest misconception teachers have when defining empowerment? Or
Explain the difference between empowering a student and engaging one.(@MTiesworth) #Opt4LearnLAP#LearnLAP
Opt 4 Q3: Biggest misconception among some Ts is that S empowerment= chaos, disorder & Ss learning less. S empowerment instead leads to increased S engagement. #optrLearnLap#learnlap
Some teens have passions will carry for the rest of their lives. Some have passions they will carry for two more weeks.
Let Ss embrace their passions as they see fit. Don't presume each MUST have a passion NOW. #learnlap
I recommend reading this book. Rick Lavoie is a sped guru and absolutely brilliant! The information in this books works for ALL ss and is a game changer! #LearnLAP#Opt3learnLAP
O1A1. We have to start with baby steps with these types of people. They are afraid of change. It could be from a bad experience, something negative occuring in their lives, etc. #learnlap
Yes. Which is perfectly ok. This rush to embrace passion makes it seem like there's something wrong with a teen who doesn't have one yet. Seriously......what were you passionate about at 14? I don't even remember her name :) #learnlap
Opt. 4 Q2: Managing challenges: Study models of others who faced challenges & persevered, connect their work to those models, provide guided support &/or resources, as needed, to get over a hurdle. #learnlap
It's not too late to join us in #LearnLAP choose your own adventure! Time is flying but the ideas and connections are amazing. Coming up on our last Opt 4 Q. #Opt4LearnLAP
I'm fully in support of recognizing a passion (life-long or temporary) and letting that be a vehicle for the Ss learning and engagement. But I'm not going to spend much time helping Ss "find their passion." Rather let them take their time and figure it out themselves. #learnlap
I was always passionate about several subjects. I wanted to explore them all. Sometimes, kids haven't settled on just one passion because they are still exploring the world. #learnlap
Opt4 Q3- Empowering Ss is not just dif ways to demonstrate knowledge, rather changing the paradigm to give choice in what is learned, when, and how they learn it. Supporting Ss taking active ownership in learning...this is what truly teaches responsibility #LearnLAP
Opt 4 Q 4: What are examples of simple tools people use to empower Ss. For example (from LearnLAP), teaching my Ss how to answer our phone, and expecting it, has change dramatically our world!(@theMrOlson) #Opt4LearnLAP#LearnLAP
O1A1a. We must find out some information about this subject first. What interests this person may have and what are their dislikes, as well! How can we start carrying on a conversation of learning bringing in this person's interests into the conversation. #learnlap
Opt 3 A4: I try to be proactive and tailor learning to their needs/preferences to avoid refusal. I build in/add something motivating to them if we need to get back on track. (Hug, good note, work w/ a buddy, etc. varies by s) #LearnLAP#Opt3LearnLAP
Opt 3 Potluck Q4: When a S refuses to do work in the classroom, what positive strategies do you use to get them focused and back on track? (@MrsAsztalos) #LearnLAP#Opt3LearnLAP
❤ that video! It was so eye opening. I got to hear Rick Lavoie speak and meet him about 4 years ago. It is still one of my PD highlights! I felt like I was meeting a movie star! 😂 #LearnLAP. #Opt3LearnLAP
Thanks so much to everyone who participated tonight! Especially @Katiemc827 for moderating a REALLY cool chat format! So awesome!!!
Please join @MsTayGrade7LA next MONDAY for #LearnLAP at 7pm Central!
For now, I hope you check out #tlap for more great discussion!
Earlier this year my rdg groups focused on natural disasters. They then chose any ND to do further research on and create a presentation. One kiddo even created a Kahoot game for the class. Now we’re studying the Am Revolution. I call it “mini genius hour”
