Q1: Why is coding important in schools?
Interested in topic of coding, which does not come up much in my grad ed tech courses
Coding is a very important topic for students that teaches them to think literally
Hello
Jill k-5 science specialist, MN
Hi Sam. Saw you last night on the TeacherCast broadcast
A1 coding is problem solving. The world's dilemmas will be fix by out of the box problem solvers
Hi Jill and thanks for joining with guest moderator
A1: coding is an opportunity to support creative self expression
Hello
Welcome to
I wonder if will be joining us?
A1 coding teaches basic math facts to students in a way they understand
A1: Interested in learning more about the how's and why's of teaching coding
Do students always have to understand the facts we are teaching them?
A1: programming gives students the tools to describe and navigate the world around them
Nathan could you say more about why coding is a method students understand
A1: I took a coding class last semester and it forces you 2 think about each step &problem solve before finalizing ur answer
Are we doing CookieChat yet?
Who teaches facts? we got wikis for facts
Me, too. I've always wanted to do this with Ss and still haven't. I buy the why - need more about how. https://t.co/r5n0oo23Rn
A1: Interested in learning more about the how's and why's of teaching coding
no always. Sometime they can't tell what the proper name is but they know the meaning
Am on the same page, Jamie, about the how of coding
Hi everyone A1. Teaching coding helps in teaching character to our young ones. Placement Order Outcome Problem Solving
There are many great entry points to using code in any class, are your kids reading?
Would you eventually be teaching coding to students?
Hello I’m happy to see you … Are you hanging with tonight?
What do you consider inappropriate technology use?
Yes - Gr 5, with 1:1 iPads. Just looking for a platform that's more accessible than Scratch. https://t.co/KehZszCIK7

A1 My S's love and You create an app on Bitsbox and go through game levels in CC.
ScratchJr, and my 5th graders love
we wanted to use AOLtube but they wanted $19.99 a month
links to math are endless. Student engagement is instant. All ages are interested.
Q2: What can students learn while programming?
Why are these skills important?
Q2: What can students learn while programming?
Why are these skills important?
Been hearing wonderful things about Scratch
There r online games out there 4 kids 2 teach kids the basics of coding & going from step 1 to 2
Are you Sam?? Haha Sam belongs to Wokka
Are you able to tweet some link?
A2: Students can learn to take problems step by step, which can help relieve frustration by missing a step with a problem
you gotta hook the servos up to something
A2 base 10, coordinate plane, how to count
Precision - you have to get it right to make it work. The best part is there are lots of right ways. https://t.co/eJPs6741vA
Q2: What can students learn while programming?

So how many aliases do you have, Sam?
Another good one ~> . does great work too... https://t.co/kXiROoGUED

A2 if students cannot see there are multiple answers, how will they be great innovators
Are other students in your ed program also involved with coding
A2 My S's learn problem solving and teamwork. I have them work in pairs as the coding level becomes more difficult.

coding has so much math in it. Use gaming to pull them into math
yes, a few of my friends are. I took the class last semester and it was rather rigorous. It wasn't my cup of tea
multiple personality disorder, or is Dissociative Identity Disorder now the term, for ?
Q3: How are you addressing coding in your schools? What devices, robots, websites or programs are you sharing??
Q3: How are you addressing coding in your schools? What devices, robots, websites or programs are you sharing??
coding with a partner is a great way to promote collaboration. Tech buddies worked great at my school.
Are the students in your program being prepared to teach coding?
No, I'm more interested in something being fairly immediately user-friendly. Scratch takes some time.
We haven't even touched upon coding in our grad ed program. Are we missing the boat?
Join us over in for ideas right now :-)
A3: Scratch coding. Dash and Dot.
A3: We use ipads and offline programming in grades k-5, more laptops as kids get older
we are looking at building a graduate level robotics class that is heavy on coding
A2. With coding, our Ss can begin to regain control. Much of their use of tech is reactionary... Wipe, swipe tap tap
Quite true for many students, but on the other hand, don't we teach creating in other means w/ tech?
right, we can teach them that every click is doing something
A3) I love the idea of using coding as a problem-solving process mindset https://t.co/KEArwS2akY
Q3: How are you addressing coding in your schools? What devices, robots, websites or programs are you sharing??
A3 this is a long list. Makeblock mbots, hummingbirds, kits, drones
Jumping in; K teacher in NE. My kids use ScratchJr, Kodable, https://t.co/VxYlTKOvg7 , The Foos, Ozobot, Sphero, Unplugged
That seems to be the scenario in many places. iPads lower grades and transitioning to laptops upper grades
waking up from a nap and checking in.
A3 scratch, snap, scratchx, Arduino IDE
A3: In my HS, there was a peer of mine who had a robot. I will share the link 2 a cool video 4 u all! https://t.co/TGq3tG3u2X
the interface is pretty good, but once you start working with text-based programming you need keys
A3 we are trying to stay with software that students can download on their own devices
yes, some of my upper level colleagues are being trained to know coding and how to teach it.
A3 6 & 7 grade s's code in lab. Make app in on PC then QR code to iPad. lets T's create classes.
I am trying to order a Nao robot
I am really loving game builders and level designers, has this as well as fun coding puzzles to solve
A2: importance of word choice; precision. Everyone wants to be able to be understood in all aspects of life
A1: I think it promotes teacher tech learning just as much as students. Promotes collaboration as well.
I worry about classroom tech at that price point, is one of ANYTHING useful in my classroom?
I also like the Floors iOS app for a different type of coding
Has anyone worked with Lego MindStorms? Recommend it? I find it's more common w/MS or HS than upper elementary
A3. We are using Dash Dot Sphero WeDo Scrath ScratchJr Kodable Bloxelbuilder Floors Ozobots BeeBots Robot Turtle board game
I have a problem with novice and computer science being in same class. Nao can work for both
programs by symbols and allows you to build 3 levels
See you're in Boca Raton. Just visited a school there while vacation in Delray Beach
Q4: How can we create learning experiences built around programming?
What grades can take advantage of these experiences?
Q4: How can we create learning experiences built around programming?

Thank you for joining us tonight
no it is the one from pixel press
We have Mindstorms. Not impossible for LowerSchool but WeDos are a great intro to LEGO robotics and program
I'm trying to get my hands on some WeDos! I know my Ss would love them!
If your goal is creation using code then you could start with building game levels in The Foos to start.
So are most teachers in your school involved with these?
yes that one. Students can build game and trade devices to test
A5: incorporate all curriculum. Coming from ELA I can easily see the language classroom supporting the coding process!
A4: involve coding in the final assessment. take the info learned and apply it in scratch JR to build a story, of a game
Off topic, but saw you're a Seesaw ambassador. Would love to know more
tie it in with a feedback form to critique app. Students get real help in building
A4: Code instead of creating a poster or writing a report. Use robots to explore a concept. Any grade level can do this!
is freakin awesome. It is the portfolio for making. We are using in 1 of our course
A4 Create meaningful connections to content that you teach and to what students are interested in. And any grade!
A4. Being CS to classes when authentic. Minecraft in 2nd for perimeter lesson. ScratchJr in 3rd for "programming your story"
I love when they are all working on games and the first one asks "who wants to play my game?"
code is the visual language on electricity and sensors
A5: code to cr8 products for.... Integrate with the PBL purpose in mind. Set up 3D product shop in your school. Make it real.
Yes, know is for eports but want to see some student examples
I love the idea of coding being a visual experience.
A4 S's create a product or learn through gamification. S's love both approaches. Find sites with login that saves S's work
that is the gold nugget moment
A4: Programming can teach kids patience & 2 pay attention 2 what they r doing the first time or the problem will not b right
our students are posting their project logs to it and blog
You can do that trick in first grade, just ask 's teachers
Thanks for your many helpful suggestions - I'm building a good list to explore.
and seesaw works in everything and that is key to us
Am in W Hartford at U of St. Joe
If you have questions as you explore, tweet at me. Would love to help.
Hi everyone, Sarah from VA. A4 coding has a bunch of cross-curricular tie-ins. Learning from and
A4: code to cr8 products for.... Integrate with the PBL purpose in mind. Set up 3D product shop in your school. Make it real.
A4 cont is a great resource for coding in the curriculum
as long as the knife is sharper than your pinky
such great sources! Hi Sarah
So Nathan, you have your ed students using for implementation in K-12
I have to say I really miss being in a chat with this is awesome. I love learning from him.
Hi Sarah, my buddy. Great to see you on tonight
Q5: Can teachers who don't know much about programming learn these skills quickly? How?
and now they r the ones in front of the room looking at one device asking "how" or "if"?
Q5: Can teachers who don't know much about programming learn these skills quickly? How?
Hey friend! So awesome to see you!
we are using it as a model for pre-service teachers 2 record what students r doing and learning
Currently learning together, launching our journey soon!
A4: Teachers can use programming in class, without fully understanding it. In fact, they have to
Q5: practice. Connect. Collaborate with peers. Better yet? Let the kids show them! Learn beside them!
like anything else...dive right in! Work and learn alongside students!
A5: Quickly? It depends. The secret is the teacher doesn't have to know it all. Learn along with your students.
A5 Yes! If S's get stuck I find best S coder in class to help them and me too.
Awesome Plan to intro & in March in grad ed course for use w/ K-12 students
A5 every school I go to code with them, I tell students I suck at coding but we will learn together
connecting and collaborating is essential
Exactly, programming is a chance to change the knowledge economy https://t.co/QAu2LXi0m5
Q5: practice. Connect. Collaborate with peers. Better yet? Let the kids show them! Learn beside them!
A3: grants got us ozobot, dash, sphero, cubelets and Littlebits. Use most K-5 with trained volunteers
Interesting and healthy attitude, Nathan.
A5a. So much of the primary student work is elements from comp sci. Patterns Order Building Algorithm. Ts need to know this
prepare 4 awesome fun. We are starting 2 program underwater robots soon
1st grade T here looking for best resources to place coding experiences in the classroom...
Heyyyyy Nathan!!! What's good?
A5: Visual environments make it easy for teachers to learn
everything now you are here
it's a life-changer. The smartest person in the room is the room, right?
Devices available? My first thought in 1st grade is ScratchJr.
haha many thanks, my friend! I appreciate the warm welcome!
A5b. Present CS to our Ts with terms they recognize. They need that connection first. Then bring the hi tech or lo tech
A4: constant struggle, lots of brainstorming, searching, thinking and teamwork. All grades, connections are key
Amazing! What about GoPro to video?
A5 I believe in co-learning and having class projects that we both are going to learn something
A5: With my experience, i would say that it is not easy 2 teach a person without exposure to coding enough skills 2 teach it
A5: in the right learning experiences everybody learns
we purchased an openrov kit to use with science methods to drive in a lake
we need to mod it with more lights to see in the lake
A5: quickly-maybe, learn- for sure. Not afraid to try and finding help where and however possible
A5 that is the straight truth
Q6: What can students learn in a paired programming environment that they would miss in 1:1 classroom?
Q6: What can students learn in a paired programming environment that they would miss in 1:1 classroom?
What grade level? If we are going to go we will need to train existing teachers, IMO.
A5 Anyone can learn to code. It just takes practice and confidence. Also the right experience.
A6: Paired programming lets kids build social skills as well as working relationships with their peers
A6: The social skills of collaboration and working with others. How to share resources.
So is coding continued to be taught in other grades, and if not, do students remember it?
train?? I just ask questions to students and they train me
A6: Collaboration and social skills!
That kind of collaboration is also true of using a variety of tech tools for creation
A6 pair programming allows students to review and see alternative paths. 2 brains are better than one https://t.co/gy8Alz3THi
That becomes more difficult in high school, IMO, but it's a great thing to do even if you DO know!
I also teach a K-6 after school coding club. Students remember even without that. It's amazing how they retain it!
Next year it will be a district expectation that all grade levels teach a least some coding.
Oh absolutely, that is not limited to coding.
it is like juggling pirates
Great conversation tonight
A6. Paired programming or any paired activity utilizing tech (or not) builds on Empathy. Must be aware of an other.
Thanks for the great chat tonight
Amazing to know. Have not seen that kind of cross-grade level integration in many schools
A5 paired students allow students to have equal voices
A5 Inst Coach in CA. Key is choosing projects at approp. level for T and Ss. Can learn skills w/in narrow scope
A6 It's the best when S's learn together. I like putting different level students together.
I'm just thinking about my teacher in high school and I don't know that I could teach what she did
Many thanks to for guest moderating tonight. Amazing chat & group of participants
Thank you these are great resources to get me started.
ours is pushing for going at least beyond one hour of code on the computer class. It's a start!
every now and again you have to fake it until they make it
A6: I think kids would adapt better to paired programming and would learn things from their peers too!
High School is tougher but I know some states that are training existing tchrs (usually math/science) as CS tchrs
I'm from PA so maybe some things are different here. That is a good point!
Thanks for taking part in tonight’s . See you online!
