Struggle with this. Love apps and technology where kids talk to each other like padlet and others I can't think of right now. #TCMchat
  • MFAnnie Apr 12 @ 9:12 PM EDT
A2: Having Gr4 Ss make screencasts of quadrilateral constructions gave lots of insight into their understanding of quad properties. #TCMchat

Many of our primary classrooms use @Seesaw. Super student friendly and great connection to home. #tcmchat
  • MarkChubb3 Apr 12 @ 9:15 PM EDT
A2 While I do capture my Ss thinking a lot via pic/movies, and have shared some of these, I haven't made this a real priority. #tcmchat
  • LisaCyrCoburn Apr 12 @ 9:16 PM EDT
We use Showbie to manage. Great way to give feedback! #TCMChat
  • LisaCyrCoburn Apr 12 @ 9:17 PM EDT
Q2 It is amazing at how much you can learn from a Ss recording- so much more informative than static work. #TCMChat
  • megyzr Apr 12 @ 9:17 PM EDT
A2: we also ask Ss to look/listen to each other's strategies and give feedback - not daily - yet another plus of tech in this way #TCMchat
  • BESMrPotter Apr 12 @ 9:18 PM EDT
My daughter's 1st grade teacher uses seasaw to show off Her work to her mother and I. We love it and our little one is always proud #TCMchat
  • LisaCyrCoburn Apr 12 @ 9:18 PM EDT
Q2: We have also found that students love to review their recordings and often self correct! #TCMChat

Q3 In what ways could (or does) screencasting help you select and sequence student solutions and representations #TCMchat
  • Zakchamp Apr 12 @ 9:20 PM EDT
Big fan of SeeSaw too. Loved downloading my daughters portfolio of work at the end of the year. Very cool. #TCMChat
    In reply to @MikeRashidMath, @BESMrPotter
  • megyzr Apr 12 @ 9:20 PM EDT
Yes! Seesaw allows for that shared digital community; it's one of the favorites among our parents for that reason. #tcmchat
    In reply to @BESMrPotter
  • pearse_margie Apr 12 @ 9:20 PM EDT
A2: Just saw a teacher use Shadow Puppet. Pretty cool. @Seesaw is a favorite. #tcmchat
  • poly_math_ Apr 12 @ 9:20 PM EDT
That's great! I like that Sketchpad is also compatible with our Smartboard... #TCMchat

Q2 We have had Ss that were selectivly mute in class that do make recordings! Everyone has a voice:) #TCMChat
  • daledaze Apr 12 @ 9:21 PM EDT
Q2: Screencasting is a great way for students to share their thinking with one another; they enjoy being the teacher! #tcmchat
  • MarkChubb3 Apr 12 @ 9:21 PM EDT
I really like in the intro the distinction made between what might be more and less productive uses of screencasting #tcmchat
    In reply to @MikeRashidMath
  • Zakchamp Apr 12 @ 9:21 PM EDT
A3: Can't wait to hear what you folks have to say on this one! How can discourse being enhanced by tech? So cool. #TCMChat
  • MikeRashidMath Apr 12 @ 9:21 PM EDT
Agreed! I still go back and look at some of my daughter's work from last year. Great way to see growth. #tcmchat
    In reply to @Zakchamp, @BESMrPotter
  • Zakchamp Apr 12 @ 9:22 PM EDT
Me too Mark. I'm thinking we're not big fans of technology for technology's sake. #TCMChat
    In reply to @MarkChubb3, @MikeRashidMath
  • megyzr Apr 12 @ 9:23 PM EDT
A favorite shadow puppet came from a PreK he explains "rectanglers" to us as having "2 short sides and 2 long sides" - fantastic! #TCMchat
    In reply to @pearse_margie, @Seesaw
  • MarkChubb3 Apr 12 @ 9:23 PM EDT
Maybe "priority" isn't right word Often, I try to replicate things with the group, but capturing thinking might be ideal at times! #tcmchat
    In reply to @MikeRashidMath
  • themathgirl Apr 12 @ 9:24 PM EDT
Elem college cls used padlet to explain one thing they understood about a problem then had them prove or disprove someone else's. #TCMChat
  • poly_math_ Apr 12 @ 9:24 PM EDT
That's great! ...always looking for ways to support each and every student's voice in the classroom... #TCMchat
    In reply to @LisaCyrCoburn
  • MarkChubb3 Apr 12 @ 9:25 PM EDT
A3 Without having extensive experience, I imagine that both in-the-moment and captured thinking require similar thinking... #tcmchat
  • BESMrPotter Apr 12 @ 9:25 PM EDT
A3 using nearpod lets me glance at everyone's answers and diagrams and project in ascending order or to emphasize a certain skill #TCMchat
  • MarkChubb3 Apr 12 @ 9:25 PM EDT
A3 However, I do see value in being able to rewind and revisit thinking to help us select. #tcmchat
  • themathgirl Apr 12 @ 9:26 PM EDT
@pearse_margie Want to learn seesaw and shadow puppet?? Never heard of the puppet one. #TCMChat
  • MikeRashidMath Apr 12 @ 9:26 PM EDT
Zak, sometimes the best technology is the pencil! #TCMchat
    In reply to @Zakchamp, @MarkChubb3
  • MarkChubb3 Apr 12 @ 9:27 PM EDT
A3 WHile selecting is really important, I don't want Ts to be bogged down & not consolidate because they couldn't pick Ss work #tcmchat
  • themathgirl Apr 12 @ 9:28 PM EDT
I have 5th teachers using IXL. Not a fan b/c the kids don't try to figure out what they did wrong they just keep trying till 100% #TCMChat
  • MarkChubb3 Apr 12 @ 9:29 PM EDT
I see value in revisiting the thinking you had... then communicate about it. I also see value in explaining what you thought #tcmchat
  • Zakchamp Apr 12 @ 9:29 PM EDT
I heard @eluberoff talk at #NCTMAnnual and he said, "If you can do it with paper and pencil, THEN do it with paper and pencil." #TCMChat
    In reply to @MikeRashidMath, @MarkChubb3, @eluberoff
  • ThomasAmandaL Apr 12 @ 9:30 PM EDT
I agree. Nearpod is a great tool to support the five practices for orchestrating discussion- selecting and sequencing, especially #TCMChat
    In reply to @BESMrPotter
  • Zakchamp Apr 12 @ 9:30 PM EDT
    Ugh... #TCMChat
    In reply to @themathgirl

Q4 How can screencasting support Ss as they engage with SMP 4 (Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others)? #TCMChat
  • MikeRashidMath Apr 12 @ 9:30 PM EDT
I love a good whiteboard and marker! #TCMchat
    In reply to @BESMrPotter
  • MarkChubb3 Apr 12 @ 9:30 PM EDT
I'm not a fan! I like things that help you learn... not just see what you already know! #tcmchat
    In reply to @themathgirl
  • megyzr Apr 12 @ 9:31 PM EDT
Agreed. We make options like that a "home choice" & focus on tech to share thnkg, strats etc - requires process & often reflection #TCMchat
    In reply to @themathgirl
  • MFAnnie Apr 12 @ 9:31 PM EDT
I've done a lot of work, and an NCTM talk, about "strategic uses of tech" - why use it? How does it impact choices you make? Fun. #tcmchat
    In reply to @Zakchamp, @MikeRashidMath, @MarkChubb3, @eluberoff
  • MarkChubb3 Apr 12 @ 9:31 PM EDT
So screencasting might be able to capture what you did with your pencil though! #tcmchat
    In reply to @Zakchamp, @MikeRashidMath, @eluberoff
  • Zakchamp Apr 12 @ 9:31 PM EDT
A4: Screencasting is definitely a powerful way for Ss to share their work and have others critique their reasoning. #TCMChat
  • Zakchamp Apr 12 @ 9:32 PM EDT
Totally - and it can make it easier to share that work with the rest of the class. #TCMChat
    In reply to @MarkChubb3, @MikeRashidMath, @eluberoff
  • JaneMWilburne Apr 12 @ 9:33 PM EDT
Anne, good point. Technology should be used strategically to be sure it is not just an add on. #TCMchat
  • MarkChubb3 Apr 12 @ 9:33 PM EDT
A4 Often as Ss are thinking, they write down their process. SMP4 might ask them to make a final product of their thoughts #tcmchat
  • megyzr Apr 12 @ 9:33 PM EDT
A4: when Ss listen, respond to each other's screencast, even early learners. Oppty to agree/not, say why, give feedback, etc. #TCMchat
  • MFAnnie Apr 12 @ 9:33 PM EDT
In @CueThink Ss watch each other's vids and can leave comments. So experiencing both sides of SMP3 at the same time. #TCMchat
  • MarkChubb3 Apr 12 @ 9:34 PM EDT
A4 Being able to listen to others' thinking opens up the door for more conversation about others' reasoning! #tcmchat
  • Kidsmathtalk Apr 12 @ 9:34 PM EDT
Screencasting will give all students, especially shy ss, a chance to share and critique and question without being overwhelmed #TCMChat
  • MikeRashidMath Apr 12 @ 9:34 PM EDT
It's important to keep the SAMR model in mind. https://t.co/Tobf1tdN7Q Shouldn't be using tech just to use tech. #TCMchat
    In reply to @Zakchamp, @MarkChubb3, @eluberoff
  • Zakchamp Apr 12 @ 9:35 PM EDT
No worries! If we were having an in person conversation, I wouldn't shame you for taking us off topic. It's how we communicate. #TCMChat
    In reply to @themathgirl
  • Zakchamp Apr 12 @ 9:35 PM EDT
Yeah totally. I'm not implying that screencasting shouldn't be used. It's other ed tech that worries me. #TCMChat
    In reply to @LisaCyrCoburn, @MikeRashidMath, @MarkChubb3, @eluberoff
  • megyzr Apr 12 @ 9:35 PM EDT
Agreed. So often Ss easily tell you what they did, but the same thinking doesn't make it to paper. Screencast grabs the math story. #TCMchat
    In reply to @MarkChubb3
  • pearse_margie Apr 12 @ 9:36 PM EDT
I really like posting work side-by-side for students to notice, compare and contrast. Can that be done too with screencasting? #TCMChat
    In reply to @Zakchamp, @MarkChubb3, @MikeRashidMath, @eluberoff
  • MarkChubb3 Apr 12 @ 9:36 PM EDT
Different Ts have different goals Some record Ss thinking so they can evaluate each Some record so they can deepen the learning! #TCMchat
  • themathgirl Apr 12 @ 9:37 PM EDT

A5: I'd love to find ways to use screen casting to compare and contrast two student strategies. Thanks for the tip @pearse_margie! #TCMChat
  • LisaCyrCoburn Apr 12 @ 9:42 PM EDT
I have teachers that are doing 3 act tasks and Ss will record their thinking. #tcmchat
  • MarkChubb3 Apr 12 @ 9:43 PM EDT
"Feedback" is important but does feedback help us -get same answer -make connections -see new strategies -reveal misconceptions ? #tcmchat
  • edcrpcollab Apr 12 @ 9:44 PM EDT
One T we work with said screencasting changed those convos from "can't-do" to "can-do" to build on what Ss already know #tcmchat
    In reply to @MarkChubb3
  • BESMrPotter Apr 12 @ 9:44 PM EDT
I plan on using screencasting to get Ss talking about their own learning, listening and reasoning with peers #TCMchat
  • megyzr Apr 12 @ 9:44 PM EDT
