Hello :) don't worry we're happy that you drop in when you can. Have you settled in? How are your newbies?
hello how are you? I've had an interesting day I'm leading two after school clubs now and it can be challenging!
Hello all. Not been around for a while. School got in the way! Trying to change that.
All good here just super tired after mega stressful day :) Hoping you'll all revive me!
Yayyyy!! Hello! SO good to see you again! Darn that school huh?! Always in the way!! I know!! :)
Hi Sue, great to have you with us. No worries that happens, glad you're here now. How are you?, how are your newbies?
Oh noooo! What are you doing now? Teaching full time or half time w schooling?
yeah all settled now newbies are doing well and have started to get into routine super quick it's great!
Quite a change this year. Now have Preschool, Reception & Y1, altogether. So far so....interesting!
Trying to get a better work life balance this term.
Not teaching this year initially -eeek! sounds heaven but hard in a different say ;)
Good evening all. Been off it for a while due to stressful family stuff and general lack of marbles. All good now - back on it
would love to know the secret it you figure that one out π
Not too bad thanks. Pretty tired most of the time though...
Fab, half battle if they settle well. Although beware tears when they realise it's for real- ha ha always had that!
Well, I'm trying ... it might work
Sounds like we all need tonight's chat after stressful time! Why can't adult life be easy like childhood! Lol
Yay!! Hello!! So good to see you back! :)
Hi Annie good to have you with us and glad to hear you are well. How are your newbies? settled well?
I know!! If only we knew then!!
Getting back into the swing of school takes a month- a long, hard, painful month! :)
It's a constant battle! Though I think teachers are way too hard on ourselves! Always more to do
If you haven't joined us before- quick hello & introductions first before we move to topic. Tell us who you are & where you are.
ah it's hard getting back into the fast pace of it all! My team has doubled so it's all very interesting leading it
I'm into week 3 & feeling like it should be xmas
RT If you haven't joined before-quick hello & intros before we move to topic. Tell us who you are & where you are
yes I know that's the worst bit when they realise they have to come back! Haha
RT I'm into week 3 & feeling like it should be xmas
WOW! How are you managing that? That is some differentiation- SUPERWOMAN
Oh no!! Tough birds or just the pace?
Are you non class-based too this year?
Did you have a good summer? I barely remember mine anymore but I know it happened!! :)
Haha, I wish I was Superwoman, probably wouldn't feel this tired.
I missed! What is Sue doing?
goodness, that is a mix. You must be quite a small school?
I am now teaching preschool (from 3yrs) with reception & Y1.
Hahaha! Such a long time ago! Yes good thanks -family time. How was yours?
Whoa! Ok so a large span- one room school house style! How many children?!
Has several year groups together- like I say SUPERWOMAN - I am in awe
Wonderful- long mornings with lots of coffee spent reading- it was a dream!!!
Just over 60 children, I have 6 reception, 12 Y1 & 4 preschool, although hoping for more
Hi Sarah! Where are you now?! I remember lots of traveling??!
RT Just over 60 children, I have 6 reception, 12 Y1 & 4 preschool, although hoping for more
yes, just over 60 children in total
Isn't it? Hats of Sue- seriously!
Oh my goodness- SIXTY?? SIXTY?? Oh what does England do to her teachers??!
RT yes, just over 60 children in total
It's an interesting journey at the moment, plus 2 new staff with me & a new way of doing things
I say lets all clap and give some sympathy, good cheer and a big ((((HUG)))))
just listening in π first time
60 in the whole school, across 3 classes...

You must be shattered Sue. That sounds like HARD work!
wow 60 is so small, we have that just in reception!
I know your classes are so much larger there- but its one teacher to 60 kids plus assistants?
Hello :) Welcome great to have you, are you in UK? How are you and how are your newbies?
We are in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by fields, no village as such
That's a total number across classrooms?
Hello! Welcome! Topic coming up soon! (we always chat and catch up first!) :)
For my small school 60 in whole school across 3 classes, will be 60 in reception across 2 classes
yes in uk, EY Adviser supporting preschool and working with 3 nurseries 2-5yr olds
yes we have at least 60 for every year group and 78 in nursery
Ok Folks let's move on to chat- Our youngest children coming to school with more physical problems- your experience?
Here is the article for tonight's topic! Take a look!
RT Ok Folks let's move on to chat- Our youngest children coming to school w more physical problems- your experience?
"Almost 90 per cent of children demonstrated some degree of movement difficulty for their age." WOW
they need more time to play and work through difficulties before they go to school. It's so sad for children
Greta to have you with us. Always intro first. Discussing increase in physical issues as children start school
I'm finding that childrens muscle development is weak, especially arms & less stamina, can't even manage extended periods on feet
Amazing that they've seen this issue come to be so quickly!
RT I'm finding childrens muscle development is weak, esp arms & less stamina, can't manage extended periods on feet
I try to work on shoulder strength first as in boys this takes longer to develop
WAs quite a small sample in research gap but still WOW! I saw huge increase in physical issues over last few yrs
Also play is so controlled now that there is less chance of "unpredictability of movement" so children don't have to alter
Are you finding you are doing this more than you used to? or has this always been part of provision?
RT WAs quite a small sample in research gap but still WOW! I saw huge increase in physical issues over last few yrs

It depends on the child my summer born child started school being one of two in her yr that could ride a bike
This is my 2nd year, last yr worked well. Can start earlier with nursery now too
Riding a bike is a huge rite of passage! I hope still ingrained!!
interesting variety of comments at the bottom of the article
I agree play needs to be free flow to allow children to experiment with movement. Forest trips are great for this
We find motor control low(ish) on entry - esp FMC. Have put structured FMC in place to try and build up strength & manipulation
Dramatic!! Wondering what additional movement activities people are putting in to counteract?
Trouble is chn have no space to ride a bike on cramped housing estates so many never learn
I have also seen parents using buggies much longer than my parents did when I was little this could also add to problem
Have you seen an increase in children with physical development delay?
We do FS weekly, as well as having a big muddy digging pit outside. Great for muscle building
RT Trouble is chn have no space to ride a bike on cramped housing estates so many never learn
RT I have also seen parents using buggies much longer than when I was little this could also add to problem
I agree with us actually new housing estates have very little green safe space
RT We do FS weekly, as well as having a big muddy digging pit outside. Great for muscle building
I am sad that article seems to imply children not 'school ready' NO school should be child ready!
I agree, children don't walk anywhere anymore
Read two comments and reminded why not to ever read the comments! OMG! :)
ahhhhhhh you are so right! I hate the term school ready!
Researchers in the article link suggested rise in physical problems to an increase in use of electronic toys/screens- thoughts?
we have loads of loose parts, building outside with tyres, plank and crates, great for balance
Absolutely! Adapt our settings to accommodate the chn we have
I do think there's more to the forces of unpredictability theory too- like within their play, able to cope when friend says "NO"
YEP! Click off now!!!! after crying in despair
haha I know, particularly liked the one about women teachers!
RT we have loads of loose parts, building outside with tyres, plank and crates, great for balance
Chn are less active due to screen time, not going outside to play
ME TOO! What are we doing to ensure our provision meets the needs of these children with 'physical issues'?
RT Researchers in article link suggested rise in physical problems to increase of electronic toys/screens-thoughts?
Parents also use it as a babysitter instead of taking chn outside to play catch or kick a ball
That's when I stopped reading!! Whoa- off the charts!
I couldn't access the article, glad now or my blood pressure might have risen!
Have noticed an increase in balance and co-ordination issues and real trouble managing their 'whole body" in all tasks!
RT Have noticed increase in balance, co-ordination issues and trouble managing 'whole body" in all tasks!
it's so sad! at our ASC we try to ensure a free play ethos as this be the child's only time to play
Yes! wobbly bodies! weak core, babies not left on tummys to lift head & roll over, so important
RT Yes! wobbly bodies! weak core, babies not left on tummys to lift head & roll over, so important
Yes - lack of core strength - slouching or leaning even when sitting.
challenging them more at woodland areas to increase their special awareness and physical skills
Yes, mine aim for a cupboard to lean against when sitting on the carpet
I think it may be a more widespread desire to not persist through struggle as much? Adult and child?
watch many parents with youngsters in pram- no talking/pointing out events- just often face in a phone! :(
Need more outdoor play, climbing, crawling, pulling up balancing etc
RT watch many parents w youngsters in pram- no talking/pointing out events- just face in a phone! :(
Poor little things, often don't stand a chance!
Electronic screens such a big part of our lives, is it really any wonder we're seeing this? Guess about how we combat?
I know! They are squished into performing "listening behaviors" way too quickly
Digging mud pits is a good start I think!! :) The opposite! Tactile, open ended, no electricity
I've taught Rec. Y1/2 for the past 2 years. Quite like the way I have it now
Ok folks - what kinds of activities are you using to support children with physical difficulties?
As mush active outdoor time when in school as possible. Education of parents but that needs to start at antenatal
That's why chats important-even though we KNOW-marvel at large scale of children's experience
RT Ok folks - what kinds of activities are you using to support children with physical difficulties?
We had problems with our computers/internet at the start of term, week 2 & they've just accessed the ipads/laptop. Much better
Research the article refs to, found that one third children had a lack of motor skills and reflexes- again WOW, what can we do?
Also linked to risk assessment? Chn won't try to balance on wobbly crates, walk along logs -fear of falling/failing
I teach in a nursery and that's hard going with them being new to school/routine. Guess older ones help though?
We use Squiggle as you Wriggle (adapted for us) every morning with preschool/rec. This inc Dough Disco
For maths, I ALWAYS have a station "Workout World" so kids do (a number) of large motor tasks
Agree- really need to do more about importance of physical development and how essential outdoor play is!
Outside as much as poss, bikes/scooters/trikes on big playground, use the adventure playground when we can
RT Agree- really need to do more about importance of physical development and how essential outdoor play is!
I keep two scooters in the room and that's a job to ride around on it all day :)
and all of you that know- make me realise all is not lost ;)
I hate losing children from my classes at such a young age Children need 2 enjoy life before riggers of school
Either they help or regress! It's been interesting
I also bust out those mesh climbing tunnels when needed too- they LOVE to crawl through!
ahh interesting! Love a bit of psychology and boundary pushing :-)
Best is tricks on the playground "look at me! look at me!" one sees the next and they feed off each other
Beware of those who ask- what is the learning purpose here- especially when they can already ride a bike!!!!
Learning to have FUN! is my response
I teach key skills for all sport as well as numbers, colours and shapes to build self confidence for school life
wow this looks like great fun!
Tunnel crawling so great to develop those proprioceptive senses! My fave subject :) Needed to learn effectively
tunnels and scooters, jumping! So many ways to MOVE through a lesson vs "sit and listen"
it is great fun and vital π
lack of risky play too. Chn too keen to stop and hold out a hand rather than testing own limits under watchful eye
Agree! Building up that confidence and providing those opportunities to take a risk- essential daily!
I really LOVE that rope wall!!
