Q1: How is service learning different from volunteering or fundraising?
Hello hello ! Alexis here, tweeting from sunny + beautiful Los Angeles, CA :)
Thanks for joining again Adrian!
A busy week, but it comes w/ the territory. Happy to not be traveling this week so I can join the discussion.
Agreed. I should be happy, we were headed to drought type conditions they said.
A1: Service learning has explicit learning objectives and involves real-world skills and critical analysis.
A1: fuses reading, writing, listening, speaking with taking action on issues of global/local significance
Howdy peeps, Dave here from San Francisco!
Service learning is more sustained and strategic in my view
Ken from Western Oregon Univ.
A1: Service learning ties, well, device to learning. Volunteering may or may not have an academic learning component.
A1"To give real service you must add something which cannot be bought or measured w/money - but integrity." D.Adams
A1: Service learning links to meaningful connection w the world, helps learning "stick." Not isolated, easily forgotten.
I think we have a majority for CA on tonight!
A1: I believe that service learning adds a teaching, learning, & reflection component to volunteering
A1 Service learning is learning in the real world!
Hi all - just joining in from NYC
Hi Ken! Is it really hot down there too?
I'm jealous & happy for you with our magnificent sun!
A1 SL has goals, objectives. Often tied to standards. Should include meaningful reflection & most importantly, sustainability
! Mike from Maryland Popping in while building an interactive floor.
A1: Service learning provides increased opportunities for students to reflect on their experience(s)
Which makes it comes around full circle...
Totally agree!! Real world experiences and critical thinking are a must in the classroom!!
Yes - the reflection part is very important (question that is coming up!)
Yes! Although I am enjoying it. 82 when I last checked. Will make for a pleasant soccer evening
A1 service learning sounds like what we call in the UK work experience & involves Ss doing actual work
A1: SL is sustained & collaboration must involve those considered to be in need of service. Reflection & shifts in pov too
like the word "fusion" as SL fuses clsroom learning with service experience enhancing both-greater than sum of parts!
Reflection is key!! Love that idea!
Interactive floor? Sounds like a lot of work! Thanks for dropping by !
A1: service learning is about meaningful contribution to make positive change
Jumping in from sunny San Francisco for my first in too long!
Agree - love the emphasis on learning AND skills! https://t.co/yd1gWk8hxd
A1: Service learning has explicit learning objectives and involves real-world skills and critical analysis.
There is usually a volunteer component as well - hence the service. But yes, it involves real experience!
Yay! Welcome back! Where have you been traveling these days?
Sustained!! Such an important component...so valuable for Ss!!
A1/Q1: Would you say service learning demands reflection or seems to encourage? In other words is reflection a best practice?
A1 in UK part of most vocational quals & for Ss in final year of compulsory education
Q2: What are some important elements to a service learning project?
A1: Service learning has an intention of collaboration and shared learning that is not always present in volunteering.
A1.2: I forgot to mention that it also helps strengthen communities!
I want to learn about vocational ed in the UK - I will be in London to learn more in November actually!
Love the meaningful connection piece! https://t.co/JjoFEktFS3
A1: Service learning links to meaningful connection w the world, helps learning "stick." Not isolated, easily forgotten.
Interested in learning about tonight's topic.
A2. Civic engagement and ways to engage and strengthen the community.
exactly the same then just a different name - Work Ex doesn’t involve payment to Ss
Right! Just now seeing this as I posted the same comment....
Hello good morning Rizza from philippines
A2 Purpose, outcome, what skills do we want our students to learn/use, real-world application!
A1 Service learning - is that the forced volunteer program for our high and middle school students here in the States?
A2: learning and teaching; project based; goal-oriented
A2: instruction + meaningul service + reflection = service learning
A2: An important element of service-learning is not pity! Go deep to recognize perspectives.
A2: Global-local connect, explicit instruction on project develop, professional comm skills, ,
Florida here but I'm in San Diego tonight...which counts! :-) https://t.co/H5l3DII9an
I think we have a majority for CA on tonight!
A2: Goal setting is a key step in the process, individual and group goals that are clear, measurable, and agreed upon.
A2: Service learning encourages students to problematize the world and seek their own solutions in a way that is self guided!
Hi! Thank you for joining us at ! Jump right in!
A2:Attentive to cultural differences, avoids value judgment, does not reward hours clocked, evaluate impact for short & long-term
A2: Connection to ones community, is it meaningful to the Ss, the longevity of the project, meaningful reflection throughout
Yes, especially in IL where new Civics requirement involves service learning!! Great connections coming for Ss
So true - learning the difference between empathy and pity is critical.
Hi I have worked in vocational ed for 25 years in UK happy to connect or can find a contact in London area
A1 true service learning is learning how to listen, walk with and accompany a community in its journey
A2 clear objectives, research issue, provide Ss space can gain confidence at work, sustainable project& on-going reflection
I love the project planning element that can be included - students take ownership that way.
Love this idea! includes explicit instruction on goal setting, which is a crucial skill for our Ss
definitely! And it works well with all age groups. Helps to support leadership development & responsibility
Q3: How can local service learning connect to global issues?
Wow - even the Florida people are in CA tonight for :) I just returned from Orlando!
A3: project can be about an issue that has global impact like envrmt.
A3: Ask students to research global counterpart- i.e. school recycling project leads to research on plastic in Pacific ocean.
A3 by being aware of the issues locally Ss then question if it happens here does it happen in the other parts of the world
A3: Being so close to a University, our school has a lot of global issues connected to our families.
A3 I think that they go hand in hand!
A3: I also like the idea that local can jump start a relationship w/ others across the globe
SL allows Ss to engage meaningfully, locally; their experiences will promote richer grasp of diversity & mutual respect
Sometimes the connection isn't explicitly made though.....
A3: No need to draw line betwn global-local. Not either-or. Local service builds an engagement muscle to last lifetime!
sorryI'm late#loving answers love more science comments #scienceteachers#toohestitant# don't think it's relevant
Yes! Are there issues that you think particularly engage students and get them to think globally?
A3.2: We see a lot of similarities with what's happening in our small town to our global com. Our Ts try to make connections.
A3: Provides a great entry point into how this issue plays out around the world & introduce other projects classes are doing.
Any ideas on how can teachers make these connections globally for their classrooms?
A3 can be part of the reflective process looking at interconnections & how their SL project has potential for global impact
Sorry I can't stay but emphasizes walking together over service to build equal connections w communities.
The meaningful component of service learning innately allows Ss to open up and care about world issues.
A3: Address global issues and concerns--consider ethics here and there; connect with ppl impacted by issues
Research on global counterpart to local issues can help fuel innovation to solve local challenges.
Many schools do no service--instead focus on NGO interning, living in community, even learning Indian dance!
A3 also make a local issue global thru SL projects w/ WWS, , ePals
Would love to know more about how you do that!
Q4: Share an example of a service learning activity you have done with students.
Ss also have opportunities for the Duke of Edinburgh Award, & these all inc service learning
younger kids-learning about educ. in other countries captures their attn.
These would spark interesting discussion. I can see my middle school élèves talking about how/why these are here
A4: I love this student example of service learning w/local economic impact and a global dimension: https://t.co/gw5tyElSVq
A4 Thru WWS worked w/ elem class in Indiana to raise funds for library project in Suriname
A4 my sch sends both Ts and Ss to our partner sch and we share skills assigned to us ex sports, how to teach arts in class
A4: Here is an example of a Change the World Project that brought hydration stations to our school! https://t.co/8WnTHuvaRR
A4. Just had a convo w/ the folks at this week about some of the work they are doing around service learning.
A4 our Ss on an Access to Nursing qual go into a school / health centre to take part in
Recently heard a school share they no longer use "volunteering" instead speak of "accompaniment." , humility.
So many fantastic Global Service Learning examples being shared on tonight!
A4: I don't work directly w/ youth but loving the ideas & resources being shared!
A4. We are looking at sustainability at all levels - cultural, environmental. So much to dive into!
Knowledge expands geometrically this way https://t.co/o1odU4DfoO
Research on global counterpart to local issues can help fuel innovation to solve local challenges.
Q5: What kind of reflection activities can students do after the project?
A4: We have a school garden and teach Ss the power of sustainability. Ts relate this to a local, then national, & global scale
A5. I love writing prompts. Photography and film are also great modes for reflective learning.
A4: Not sure if this qualifies, but would love to get our Digital Design Ss to help me make a film! https://t.co/Pflyk1utFg
A2 agree engage community & local charities like
Sorry. Have to run early to get my daughter to soccer practice. Thanks !
love this idea - what do the Ss grow?
Love our school garden! Every school needs one! Real world experiences/activities.
Thanks for dropping by, Hassan! I'm always inspired by your service efforts https://t.co/IJqXen3p7P
Oh wow, thank for sharing this Dave. It was 3 years ago and it surely didn't end there. So much more work done
A5: I think Ss should be reflecting throughout the entire process! Journaling, Social Media, presentations, all are great!
A5 it depends on their interest, they can do blogs, video, podcasts a lot of choices and platforms to do reflection
A5: Reflective writing/blogging: What worked, what did I learn about myself, what did I learn about our community, the world?
Wow, love that language shift! Totally changes the lens.
A5 Blog, create a PSA, share their project with others
We grow all crops indigenous to Montana. This integrates science and social studies too!
A4 next Wednesday Ss are taking part in with nurse careers
all great ideas. start smaller (ie a brief blog) + grow from there
A5: Blogging, using a shared, but secure social media platform, revisiting EQs & reassessing proposed actions throughout
Do many of you have your students blog? There was a piece recently about how students aren't allowed to blog in most places...
Great idea with film & photography! It seems to bring their heart, feelings & brain together!
A5: Ss create Q addressing global issue; research response; develop action plan; receive feedback; take action
A5: Reflection circles - time to come together and discuss what you gave to & received from (learning) the project
that is the coolest! what a great idea for bringing the classroom into LIFE!
That is the benefit for me including PBLwork as well. constant reflecting
I agree - Ss get to also own their own experience - which is so powerful.
Thanks! This was sparked by parents, Ts, AND Ss that had a passion for this activity :)
A5: But also reflective SPEAKING. has organized our Change the World Showcase next week!
Good to get the parents involved!
Ss have opportunities for shadowing health care professionals through local hospitals
Q6: What are some challenges teachers face in implementing service learning projects?
That's a great phrase in itself - "reflective speaking". We all need that!
They are part of our Irving Family :)
testing, lack of administration/parent support, insecure
we could all use some more reflective speaking I think :)
A6 Where to start, what to do, how to fit it all in, scared to try something new, let the Ss take the lead
Q6 engaging stakeholders & encouraging Ss to take part
A6: Time is always a constraint. And the linking of the global to the local can be difficult to conceptualize sometimes.
A6: Time, mandates, resistance from stake holders, lack of buy in, lack of organization, age appropriateness...
A6: It is incredibly time-consuming for Ts to plan/teach/guide these projects. Happens mostly after-hours, uncompensated
scared to try something new holds back a lot of innovaton, across the board, don't you think?
A6: Tyranny of curriculum coverage; buy-in of administrators and colleagues; time to fully implement within context of course
Agree with everything you said!
publication helps students process experiences in such a different & valuable way! https://t.co/hqoiEjKeqW
A5: Reflective writing/blogging: What worked, what did I learn about myself, what did I learn about our community, the world?
A6 always looking to engage globally would be interested in non-UK nurse training
https://t.co/kH8KiUjS1B has dozens service-learning examples + lessons learned. eg: Younger Ss respond to tangible projects
A6. Yep, we need to change this across the country https://t.co/RrRHirNmkW
A6: It is incredibly time-consuming for Ts to plan/teach/guide these projects. Happens mostly after-hours, uncompensated
Totally agree! Instead embrace the feelings of the unknown, maybe find a buddy to try it too and leap!!
A6: Districts need to offer stipends, release time, prep-periods to coordinate this type of learning
Q7: What are some resources to assist educators in taking on service learning projects?
this gets my kids psyched. when published! Collaborate for global publication and Whoo!
A7 start with great mentor teachers
I agree that it does, but if I have one person on my side (twitter people?) w/me the soft push works!
A7: Bring in your local com. to the convo! We use MSU, Americorps, local orgs., and Ps to help in the process. Collaboration!
count! one person's support is sometimes the only boost we need to get courage + try something new
A7 in UK we have local volunteer bureau as an umbrella organisation to assist also charities have opportunities
A7 Twitter! Always a good place to start with resources!
A7# Listserves are good sometimes. on and chat
A7:Wk w/local non-profits w/ structures in place.Rather than project(s) per class/yr, build year to year. Ss move on, Ts stay.
Scoop them in why not devise a project?
Q8: What are some next steps you will take to help your students participate in a global service learning project?
We all do! I can't imagine all that can be found in a big city :)
Yes - so many resources if you just ask!
A7: also has great resources
What a neat idea a group of Ss pick an idea in K and then carry on with it through 5th. Just thinking how cool!
Q8. Ask students what they care about.
A8: Our school Foundations team is trying to imbed SLPs into our ENTIRE school culture. Some classes do it, but not all
That would be amazing! Getting the buy-in from all the teachers might be tough though?
funny, teachers wanted frm Admin. Now we have support all around & can do/learn so much w/out 'em even aware.
that would be awesome! and a great lesson in patience + perserverance :)
Totally agree! Then I think it is for the Ss so we do what is needed!
A8: Continue working to make IL Global Scholar a reality so all of the great advice offered tonight gets to IL Ss
Thank you for another great night! I look forward to next time. Have to get ready for and Edcamps!
What would happen if portfolios/reflections replaced standardized testing?
In addition, working together! Stepping outside the box! Now we have our buddy!!!
Schools continue to look at vertical articulation.SL doesn't have to be tied to a single course.
Much love to the crew. Happy Thursday! Thanks for the discussion, insights, and inspiration.
Thank you all for joining tonight! Remember to follow all of the participants and grow your PLN!
Amazing!! Dream come true!
Great topic tonight! Love the ideas and resources. Thank you!
I think many are trying, we just want to keep pushing!
Yes, thanks, everyone! See you next week! https://t.co/qslAUZVdhb
