Q1 What program options are available for GT students at the secondary/higher education level? #gtchat
  • gtchatmod - Moderator Dec 20 @ 8:11 PM EST
A1 At the high school level, ‘options’ may include AP, IB, magnet schools, honors classes, or dual enrollment. #gtchat
  • giftedchlnges Dec 20 @ 8:12 PM EST
A1) Other than AP or IB, most involve extracurriculars, dual enrollment at colleges, or in depth study in area of specialization #gtchat
  • AnnaCalven Dec 20 @ 8:12 PM EST
A1) In KS students are still on IEPs. Some districts choose to exit them claiming that AP & Honors classes meet their needs. Others also include Seminar time with Gifted Peers and Gifted specific lessons as well as earlier access to college credit dual credit. #gtchat

A1) Options include whole years or subject acceleration external enhancement programs dual enrolment with unis mentoring and career education #gtchat
  • giftedchlnges Dec 20 @ 8:13 PM EST
A1) Many of the best options occur outside of the school year - CTY, SIG camps, for example #gtchat
  • CTRodGifted Dec 20 @ 8:13 PM EST
A1 This largely depends on the district. Options can be high quality GT sheltered courses, or just “regular” PAP/AP. At the college lvl there are honors programs that vary wildly in quality. #gtchat
  • CTRodGifted Dec 20 @ 8:13 PM EST
Nothing wrong with AP, etc, or honors programs, but they tend to be focused on high achievers. An AP or honors class is only as good for a GT kid as the teacher or prof in charge. If they get GT, it’s great... if not... it can be a struggle. #gtchat
  • gtchatmod - Moderator Dec 20 @ 8:14 PM EST

Many colleges like the University of Maryland have an Honors College https://t.co/ib7sMwS7GF My daughter was in the College Park Scholars Program https://t.co/Ghc0iyYy5v There needs to be be learning opportunities for high-achieving, academically motivated, students. #gtchat

A1 Additional high school ‘options’ are early entrance (plus other types of acceleration), talent searches, and distance education classes. #gtchat
  • giftedchlnges Dec 20 @ 8:16 PM EST

A1 Higher education programs include Honors Programs designed as cohorts, accelerated curriculum, study abroad, or mentorships. #gtchat
  • AnnaCalven Dec 20 @ 8:16 PM EST
Most of these are also open to regular education students. While they are great for many GT Ss, can we really call it a Gifted intervention? #gtchat

Q5 What environmental factors in school can foster a mindset of achievement for GT students? #gtchat
  • gtchatmod - Moderator Dec 20 @ 8:44 PM EST
A5 Environmental factors such as homogeneous grouping of GT students with others of like-ability and the availability of enrichment programs can foster a mindset of achievement. #gtchat
  • CTRodGifted Dec 20 @ 8:44 PM EST
A4 I’m also on record that coding/chess/robots are great but aren’t the cure for what ails us. GT kids would benefit greatly from an intense curriculum of ethics, civics, philosophy, etc. #gtchat
