Hi there! I'm a Digital Learning Specialist in Fort Bend ISD near Houston!
Q1. Define voice as it relates to the education world.
Hello . Mike from NJ, independent school math T, but more aptly dilettante-in-training.
Hey everyone! Sorry I'm late! Mary from Northern CA.
A1) There are many voices in education including those of our students.
A1 Voice- a person's uniqe way of communicating his/her experiences, insights, and stories.
Starr from NY - HS English and journalism , teacher coach. Just checking in
Jeremy from Connecticut. My #1 education stakeholder role is parent.
A1 Voice- a person's unique way of communicating his/her experiences, insights, and stories.
A1 voice is something that every educator is encouraged to use
A2: Voice in education = students, teachers, guardians, policy makers, researchers & politicians.
A1 Voice = way to share ideas, knowledge, experience, how info is communicated to others
a1 it is our unique presence and beliefs. Our ideas and actions. It's how we get heard. Students too
Sorry I am late. Was grocery shopping. Shai, Math Teacher in State College, PA. LOVING the weather. Was golfing yesterday morn.
Prof Susan in central Illinois dropping in. Glad to be here with you all tonight.
As far as education goes, to me there are several different types of voices. We the teachers, the students and their families.
A1: In writing, Voice = personality. In ed, Voice applies to the ability to connect and this is where plays a huge role.
the voices that are amplified are the ones that recognition and we must turn up the ones that matter -
A1: (continued) It's important not only to use your voice, but also how you use it.
A1) Voice in is not leaving anyone out of the conversation. Include all roles and points of view.
Important to here from different perspectives https://t.co/5zjl34hpO2
A1) Voice in is not leaving anyone out of the conversation. Include all roles and points of view.
Russ, Principal in FL. A1: Voice could be input in decisions w/ Ts & comm. Ss voice is work/words/outputs that are authentic.
kids, teachers and other advocates who are in the classrooms. School leaders must listen to make change
A1: I think every person involved with a school should have a voice, includ. janitors, para, secretaries.
Jumping in a little late. Justin, HS math, Wisconsin
if this is how we view voice, then it leads us to saying there are times we shouldn't value voice.
Q2a. What are the positive aspects of stakeholder voice in education?
sometimes the wrong voices get turned up and the others tuned out. This is bad for education
A2a) Stakeholders often have connections with funding, decisionmakng, and more. Keeps them in the loop.
A1 Education is like storymaking/telling which is co-creative, conversive. The relationships in communication => transformation.
A2a: A positive is that change can take place. Change that Ss benefit from.
A2a. A positive aspect is getting items to change for the better such as policies
A2a: When everyonce has a voice, then no one feels left out. There is transparency. Trust is built.
The people most impacted should at least have a choice/voice about education.
A2: The benefits of including stakeholder voice are far reaching. It allows for an inclusive approach & increases transparency.
A2a Everyone has opp to share ideas/thoughts, work together & build relat to benefit Ss and community.
Hi there. Lori from Manitoba. Curriculum Support Teacher. Jumping in late!
A2a voice is the catalyst for change. Voice can help something stay or go
A2) Voice in education brings mutual respect. We are less likely to see others as adversaries. Voice fosters working together.
Can you hear me? This is my voice talking.
This film is a game-changer and needs to be studied by school admin everywhere.
I wouldn't call any particular voices "wrong." It's whether voices are used respectfully and for good intentions.
Agreed and legislators etc
all business, David :) twitter voice!
Q2b. What are the negative aspects of stakeholder voice in education?
A2 Sometimes the most powerful voice is the patient, platforms like , give all a voice.
A2a going back to a I think everyone has a stake in education the two most important being the teacher-student bond
Don’t be afraid to shine the light of POSITIVE culture at the darkest places in your school.
https://t.co/04N2NoZ1qq
everyone should read 's new book on how to amplify your voice
AQ2b: I wouldn’t say there are negative voices. We can make room for skeptics and include these views respectfully.
It's one page and links to my tweets. Occasionally it redirects you to timeline too. https://t.co/vuQn3GAYSn
everyone should read 's new book on how to amplify your voice
A2b: When SH feel that are the expert and expect to be listened to, followed. Some can be overbearing, if parameters aren't set.
A2b sometimes the louder voices have agendas that may not be best for school
That is the real issue. https://t.co/ZyzLwZvYMh
A2b sometimes the louder voices have agendas that may not be best for school
A2b: A negative could be unintended disagreements from lack of clear communication.
I think folks who aren't in Ed like big business are the Misguided voices that control decisions
The teacher student voice needs to be loud in every aspect so that all things can be heard and the best is achieved
A2b) May have to consider motives when you have some of these stakeholders involved.
I agree Not sure there are negative aspects to including all stakeholder ' voices
it's all about intention. I agree there
Agreed! https://t.co/YQczM8Y1I9
A2b) May have to consider motives when you have some of these stakeholders involved.
A2b) Don't let voice override action. Some angry person will say their voice wasn't heard. That's the nature of decision making.
Q3. How can we encourage more stakeholders (such as parents) to use their voice to help education?
A2b Can become negative if SH dont feel valued, =opp for commnic/collab,
A2b: Possible issue: when you involve every1, time becomes an issue, and to repeat the same thing every time, nothing gets done.
A3: Engaging stakeholders and getting them involved in the process is paramount. We need each other. Many hands make light work.
Jumping in way late. Ed Jones, E Ohio.
A3: Build trust. Allow for impromptu, one on one conversations to take place.
being overbearing is a problem. At the same time, everyone is "expert" in something and probably has something to offer.
A2b Negatives usually come from those voices that aren't necessarily interested if actual educating is taking place
A3: This is one of the biggest issues our division struggles with. How to get parents involved!?
A3: Connecting SH through tech & showing the learning that is taking place in the classroom. Who can’t get behind kids learning?
wait the loudest person isnt always right?
A3 encourage parents to be part of the classroom experience. Use their knowledge
or the student and his own learning. That's the only relationship that will last.
A3 We advocate for massive experimentation in new HS courses if all kinds. With huge participation of community, students
Agree. I meant "expert" in the field of education. Ex. Ps telling Ts how to teach, when P is not in education.
A3) Encourage parents to be involved and to speak up for education. Invite them to see what's happening in schools.
getting involvement and keeping them involved - it’s an uphill battle but one that is worth it.
sometimes, but our capitalist system relies on an educated populace. So big business should have a big voice.
A3 invite them in, keep communic open, hold open houses, tech showcase, night,
When voice is collaborative, unified, w diversity valued = empowerment!
A3: I use to involve my Ps. I don't just text about my class, but other events in the school.
I'm a big fan of Remind!!! https://t.co/Hf99HrGOdO
A3: I use to involve my Ps. I don't just text about my class, but other events in the school.
but with that comes a responsibility to know what happens in schools and classrooms and is best for Ss
parent camps are a great way!
A3 Parents voices r paramount in succeeding in education there has 2 b a bridge of trust built they need 2 know their importance
A3) My 6th grader just said more, longer conferences. I promise I didn't tell her to say that tho I was part of !
I like the idea of using tech to invite and include parents, but sometimes the best invitation is face to face.
A3: I would suggest open houses, but historically, that still only brings in a very small representative of the Ss.
I hear you. Just don't know that I agree that they should control testing the way they do as well as other policy
exactly. They need to hear our voices to make more informed decisions
Techis the hook to get them in the door - then the face to face can happen and there is something to talk about.
A3: My community loves remind. Use it for parents, Ts, field trips. Also, looking at parent camps. Want them to learn to code!
A3: Our district sends newsletters through HR about the district, celebrations, needs, etc. Not sure how often though.
what is higher than big fan? I am a Remind minion.
A3: My HS is in a major renovation/building project and we are involving stakeholder much more often about it.
I'm going to use this as part of our induction next year. “: parent camps are a great way!”
Q4. How have you used student voice in your classroom? Beyond the classroom?
A4 I have helped Ss create original videos that teach campus procedures (in classroom/beyond)
A4: Student surveys & 20% time/genius hour.
Love seeing Manitobans! Doing wonderful things there K12 re Native/First Nations studies.
A4b I have also invited Ss to host our digital learning open house where they share tech tips and tools with Ts! They loved it!
well certainly many situations where we don't need everyone's opinion and it may be counterproductive
A4: I had Ss fill out a survey. Some said they wanted more explorations. Tomorrow, we are doing an exploration.(new one)
A4: Student blogs and portfolios have been an obvious place to showcase student voice. Podcasting was not so obvious.
A4) Have provided students feedback forms on units.
A4: My Ss make puppets and record a puppet show teaching a K-2 math topic. I send those to my elem. colleagues.
One of my favourite strategies is turn and talk. All students are given the opportunity to share in a low risk situation
A4 student voices can b used by showing that you truly respect what they are saying and making sure to incorporate student voice
A4. Students are are apart of our school and district committees to make sure their voice is heard
everyone's opinion doesn't need to be accounted for in final decision making. They can still be heard.
A4: Some of my Ss wanted to do after school. I made that happen for them.
A4: I like online discussion forums. I love the LMS for it. Everyone can talk at the same time.
A4 we are trying to use tools that students already love and make them educational tools
It provides an avenue for those that would otherwise not share. Backchannels are important in edu https://t.co/wbMicumMiy
A4: I like online discussion forums. I love the LMS for it. Everyone can talk at the same time.
A4 If students feel they had a hand in their education then they might respect the road they're traveling taking accountability
Ts do pancake breakfasts for the Ss 2-3xs/year. Not to get them to talk, but to show them they are appreciated.
Good point. May take more ownership in their educatin.
Not really. I am just a math teacher in the mess. LOL.
my blogs have given me a voice too.
I use with my students. I use it as study groups in the evenings as well.
A4 Assisting students' voice in developing a more respectful/professional social media voice via LinkedIn & Twitter use.
A4 had Ss present work at tech showcase, and I had one in June, also having in Jan, let Ss lead
Q5. What are your favorite resources (blogs, sites, Tweeters) pertaining to stakeholder voice in education?
Ss tell me that I am one of the few Ts that actually use things they say, or their advice, or listen to them. Why ask if not?
I like 2 remind my students...my voice was once like their own and that I got 2 where I am by using it never be afraid 2 learn
A5 Edmodo, Remind, and Skyward!
I've heard all that before. Just want to make sure we make some distinction betw. corp. influence on ed reform...
Yes, students need to understand, buy in to the educational process. Then they are more motivated to succeed.
A5: Some things I use are to gather SH voice.
A5: Edmodo and Today's Meet are both great!
A5: I’m a fan of . I’d also recommend the Twitter chat - great place for transformative idea sharing.
...and what happens in the classroom. Corporations weren't behind deficit mindsets that widened achievement gaps.
A5. People that help advocate stake holder voices
A5 I've really come around in using any form of technology that allows students to voice their opinions TECHNOLOGY!!!
Skyward is our Student Information System.
and if I am not accounting for them are they really heard or valued?
we need more like you for sure. It's more work than anyone on the outside can imagine.
At univ, even seniors say they wished they had learned earlier in univ or even in high school about appropriate online use.
A5) I follow so many that emphasize student voice
including
You are just one or many ... connecting them is bigger. https://t.co/Bv7Apor01M
and if I am not accounting for them are they really heard or valued?
Oh, Ok. Just like Scoodle is our's, but Scoodle is really .
Q6. What is a take-away that you had from tonight’s
A5 Some of my other colleagues love
if they know why they're not accounted for. If someone's too unreasonable enough to accept that, that's on them.
Got it! I've never heard of that one.
Appropriate online use is often overlooked by schools - that needs to change.
Students want to be empowered, part of the edu process. They don't like being passive, bored. But the T/prof must engage them.
A6: It's important to let everyone be heard. It does build trust. It does help with transparency. Set parameters.
A5) , , & folks (I'd include any Ed camp that includes other stakeholders).
At univ, once students really "get it," they're horrified at all they've already let loose & work to clean up.
Next week's topic: New Year's Resolutions. Join and I at 8 PM ET US.
Agreed! And not just students - parents too!
A6: Keep students & what is best for them as conversation/voice guides.
A6 (Personally) I see a lot of give up in teachers but tonight reminded me there are still a lot who really do still care
Thank you for joining . Make sure to follow and recognize the educators that have most helped you grow professionally!
A6) Voice in education isn't defined the same way by everyone. There's far from consensus on when/whether voice can be positive.
Jill, thank you so much for a greatguided chat on the important topic of student voice. Best to all for the week.Happy Hanukkah!
= best chat! Have a great week, everyone!
A6: Develop a parent-focussed tech-camp to dovetail with our new student induction to engage parents & stay connected w/ them.
A6) Voice is crucial to help develop and to listen.
Thanks, So happy that I could get home in time to participate. Have a great week. Know that you do make a difference to Ss.
Thanks so much participants and moderators and
Thanks for the chat tonight . Great participation and much food for thought!
thank you. Such an important conversation. Given the topic, I'm glad it included a myriad of voices!
