Welcome to tonight's weekly, hour-long #edchatie discussion. This hour will be all about "The place for eLearning in schools." However, before we begin, please introduce yourself and don't forget to add the #edchatie hashtag in all your tweets too
Hi all! Ailbhe, Primary teacher in Dublin here. Teaching 6th class and recently completed Master's thesis on the participation of girls in #STEM in primary schools #edchatie
Welcome to tonight's #edchatie discussion all about "The place for eLearning in schools”. I'm wondering if Moodle will be the big player tonight or will other eLearning formats be mentioned?
#edchatie Miriam Bergin PP tchr, half here tonight, as preparing for video creation with @GoStressbusterz on Transversal skills with our Business students @JCforTeachers
And effective elearning can be as simple as teaching people to copy and paste content into Moodle without any extraneous characters from Word. #edchatie
#edchatie We use GAFE, email, google drive replaces memory stick, google sites to show exemplar work, google classroom to share notes. homework, set tasks and of late communicate with parents. Love kahoot, want to use more audio and video though for learning
Maybe relaxing in front of the TV after a long Monday ;-)
But I'm glad of the company and the interesting points being made already in tonight's #edchatie discussion
For me it all about #blendedlearning & using whatever is at hand at the time that compliments learning #edchatie Think eLearning is often overrated & industry driven.
Kate - Learning Technologist at NUIG here. There’s definitely a place for elearning in schools, but the first issue to grapple with is that it’s really just LEARNING. How can TEL enhance that? #edchatie
... but the truth is that not schools have the infrastructure or support to get it off the ground. Launching programmers without careful research and planning is pointless. #edchatie
Hi apologies for being late, quick visit, asking same question as @DpDonal what do you mean by elearning? Is it at primary & secondary, as elearning common in third level? #edchatie

In a previous life I used to work on https://t.co/DPkeLgz2L8 for @PDST_TechinEd where we ran eLearning courses that were designed for Primary & Post Primary teachers. Really interesting methodology in doing that
#edchatie
Absolutely! To slightly change the words of Seymour Papert:"Nothing could be more absurd than an experiment in which [elearning is implemented] in a classroom where nothing else is changed #edchatie
totally agree, but in many schools, little value is placed on ICT teaching. There needs to be a change in mindset of students and parents. I also teach in PLC section and our own sts have much better ICT skills than sts from other schools #edchatie
I think elearning is often IT industry driven not wishing to name but teachers are driven to certain industries to gain badges & students learning should surely be forefront #edchatie
The culture around elearning and ICT in general needs to change. It’s provides students the opportunity to gain new skills, some fantastic teachers doing work with their principals backing them. Some not so lucky #edchatie
Across the kitchen table, my 10yo is completing homework and upskilling her Cup Song Skills by self-directed e-learning via deep dives into YouTube playlists. #edchatie
I do like Google classroom & MS Teams & the huge potential that they have. App based too which appeals to teens. Experimenting with trans at the moment & I’m liking it. #edchatie
It's a different style of teaching when you're online - no longer face-2-face and very often asynchronous + users have a variety of approaches and interests to eLearning #edchatie
Push through school, if management are in favour they will pass on to staff. Cosán bring possibilities of all types of CPD and teach meets could be the best of them all #edchatie

I agree completely with #blendedlearning when it comes to schools as you are seeing the students you teach online in your class too the next day.
Are we starting to taslk #flippedlearning ? #edchatie
Started using seesaw this year, I am reflecting writing a blog. https://t.co/c2dvJhHnhb Might not keep using it next year. Always thinking is it good enough? #edchatie
Have we lost site of the original vision of the university? Are we letting the language of business take over how we educate and how we think about education ? Are Irish universities following the British trend? #edchatie@pjo90@annelooney@DaireKeogh
I think sometimes there is confusion as students often can be digital consumers rather than creators. So important to be creative and collaborative! #edchatie
One of the biggest obstacles I have found is the reliability of the technology used and the strength of the actual internet connections. I reg hear ‘oh Miss our internet was not working last night’ frustrating to say the least #edchatie
I think the online world mirrors the real world. If there's not a culture of sharing to start with, then it's difficult to motivate one within an online space. Building trust is important #edchatie
#edchatie from talking to my business sts today, they said they liked sharing & working together on tasks, they can help each other, they like googleclassroom as they can check notes, check homework, they like parents getting notification as its a support. ICT has enhanced learning
Where does the time go?
Just realised we're flying along in the discussion with the new 280 character limit too and we're already 10 minutes past the halfway mark in tonight's #edchatie discussion
I think sometimes there is confusion as students often can be digital consumers rather than creators. So important to be creative and collaborative! #edchatie
My students want an e-learning framework that clearly outlines assessment standards. Some colleagues want e-learning that auto-corrects and marks. #edchatie
#edchatie I think elearning also enables the teacher learn from students, as more creativity possible, aim to have sts create content and become digital citizens who can build their own reputation online in time.
#edchatie I think the success of elearning lies with support from school management, once they recognise the value and place emphasis on it, it helps the subject teachers.
Teachers need to think more about relationships with technology and not assume any “digital native” nonsense. Start with visitors and residents: https://t.co/eUqVn9BF40#edchatie
Agree Miriam - and this is also echoed in the domains 1 and 4 in particular of leadership and management in the new Framework for Digital Learning #edchatie
#edchatie not just saying this for the sake of it. but think @JCforTeachers a great support for eLearning, we did not have it few yrs ago, can ask questions, and get feedback on subjects eg business and coding in my case. Its another support for us.

Perhaps it's time to invoke a total character threshold because it everyone posts 280c they're probably unable to read #edchatie in depth. Plus there are issues with people pasting in six hyperlinks, four images and two video clips now that Twitter's limits have bloated.
Agreed. I also find it allows for differentiation in catering for digital skills and digital literacy capabilities through elearning as well as the more traditional literacy skills #edchatie
We're into the famous final five minutes of tonight's #edchatie discussion on "The place for eLearning in schools”. Any last thoughts, ideas, solutions or suggestions?
The learning from both @JCforTeachers pilots in coding and @ats2020project will be shared with everyone going forward - real experiences from an Irish pp context so important in supporting process of change #edchatie

#edchatie@sandrinepk agree fully! It’s so great to work and collaborate with colleagues instead of working in the lonely bubble which was always the way in the past!
We need to ensure various snippets of collaboration percolate to places where educators are most likely to review them. Our watering holes, chat spaces, and collaboration zones are scattered nowadays. #edchatie
