https://t.co/92JCkwmehv
Q1.Share how you purposefully plan to provide opportunities for student voice in your class https://t.co/iqqKD1rqDi
I'm sorry, I underestimated my level of sleepy. I will try again. Have a great chat, everyone!
A1: We'll use post its and questions to develop a consensus for class morals and norms.
We start w/ a classroom charter & and share how we want to feel in school each day
I used a lot last year, but re-read and ready to role with even more.
I agree the Give Me 5 , empowers Ss voice.
A1 First lesson is on Google Slides with Introduce Yourself collaborative slides. Thanks !
BAM!! Love this!! https://t.co/msQGxQT9Iq
a1: I'm going all in with and - will be big in student choice and exploration

A1 Incorporating multiple intelligences in choice boards so learning interests are celebrated.
I sleep horribly the first week! As excited as the kids!
A1: This year, stepping out without assigned seats--student choice. Also, students read independent choices daily.
I started mid-way last year. Getting it ready for day one this year! Haha; I did the same thing.
What blogging platform do you use?
I agree! So many good ideas --like having a playbook by my side!
Q2) Share how you ensure students have choices & options to make connections in learning opportunities? https://t.co/HDbCZ8visn
I love choice boards! haven't used them in a while - I should get back into this!
A1: I'm also going into my second year of no seating charts!
Hello Tracy, 6th gr science, from MA joining in a bit late. Mostly lurking as I travel the TCH 105
A1: getting to know them, their interests so we can incorporate and connect that with our discussion topics.
I went there last yr and went great. They were empowered by sitting where they chose so worked harder to make it work.
How do you find out about their interests? Surveys?
I did open seating last year, it was great!
Get rid of your T desk, too! Amazing change in S chem when WHOLE room belongs to our community! https://t.co/dPyVuChaWL
A1: This year, stepping out without assigned seats--student choice. Also, students read independent choices daily.
A2) I always offer choices, but am new to helping Ss have choices w/global connections; we used & global read aloud
Our Friday town hall offers a sharing opportunity for whole school
This year, really going to try more choices - show learning, it would be ok with me. Video, Written, Comic https://t.co/E9wiFpzbvs
Q2) Share how you ensure students have choices & options to make connections in learning opportunities? https://t.co/HDbCZ8visn
a2: a) I have side quests available on our learning mgmt system. b) when a unit starts I ask Ss "How can you show mast of skills?"
You and me both! Doing the same...excited about it! What is your theme?
That's good to hear. I think we will all work harder to make it work together!! + I just want the room to be fluid.
I used googleforms last year to collect a ton of interest info.
Exactly. Surveys placed in the front of interactive notebook.
I'm tying it into the SS curriculum (we co-teach SS/Sci) So it starts in ancient india and will travel thru history
Hi all. Arriving late... I was reading the stream. I'm Elissa, 6th gr World History teacher, Florida
A1 I plan for Ss voice by posting learning targets so Ss self-assess what they already know & where they need to go.
A2 As Ss become more familiar with ipad apps, Ss can choose which app to demonstrate their knowledge & understanding.
I just learned about the global Val read aloud and am very interested!
Yes! I am dong my survey on Google forms this year. https://t.co/a4wCqUGvfc
A1: getting to know them, their interests so we can incorporate and connect that with our discussion topics.
Wow! Enjoying all of the voices on this !
Excellent idea! I love using collaborative slides...I like the idea for introductions.
A2 Blogging, weebly websites allow them to get their work out for others. Having a common twitter hashtag is also way to connect.
A2: Am reading a truly amazing book on essay writing. Really want them to write about their passions.
I'm working on empowering Ss with their learning targets too. It's a new approach for me.
A2: Letting them "choose" how to show what they learned. Utilizing to have them be part of the process.
A1: I use a lot of student-centered approaches, tribe building. Plan to use class mtgs for learning & community
What kind of self-assessment do you use? https://t.co/5F9Rg1zhX4
A1 I plan for Ss voice by posting learning targets so Ss self-assess what they already know & where they need to go.
I did that last year. I added "reserved" seating for Ss who struggled making good choices :)
A2: Give Ss the opportunity to partner w/ a student Globally while learning STEM based projects each week: https://t.co/MGtMB7fFdL
I like the idea of app choice!
What are some ways that you use them? Would love some ideas since this is my first year using them. https://t.co/fNkWoH33Vk
Excellent idea! I love using collaborative slides...I like the idea for introductions.
What is the title of the book?
Hi Tracy! Lurk on, or join in! Either works!
A2. Allowing students to choose their own books. ELA standards can be taught with any text, why not one they like?
awesome! thanks for sharing!
A2 By planning stations & experiences that Ss pick & choose based on their own needs.
Q3: Why are authentic audiences important to help Ss make connections w/the world beyond the classroom? https://t.co/sseGCu2eTq
I am doing the same thing. Really exciting.
Is it new book? That is amazing! https://t.co/Fys1MU3GGW
A2: Am reading a truly amazing book on essay writing. Really want them to write about their passions.
I love doing the GRA. I think we will all need to connect our classes if we read the same book. I'm doing PAX
A3) Ss need to practice using their voices, learn how to listen, and see how their ideas are similar to/diff. from others
A3 Creates relevance and meaning to the learning, otherwise just regurgitation to same old audience.
I had them create a slide of vision for the upcoming school yr. They chose a pic. as a metaphor for their yr.
Yes it is!! Just sent pic!
my ss wanted to impress the authentic before me, but they needed my help and that was awesome
A2 Hope to add list of tool suggestions to our class blog for different purposes and audiences. We can work on it together.
I just ordered my book Pax for the
A3: Authentic audiences show students we do work for a real audience not just for a teacher, gives purpose
I have a class Twitter account which needs rejuvenated this year. Follow us
A4: that one is tricky. I work hard to build a full inclusion environ 'in' Sch. It can get rugged out there.
Thank you for the invite. Sorry I am late, but I am happy to be here.
I really focused on it this past year & saw a lot of positives in Ss learning &success. Not to mention engagement!!
more motivating! We have a student run kit mag on word press & and hosted a writing contest. https://t.co/0GmKUQC1wo
Q3: Why are authentic audiences important to help Ss make connections w/the world beyond the classroom? https://t.co/sseGCu2eTq
A3: Because the classroom isn't like the real world if not connected out to world. It can't be a bubble! https://t.co/nlzBolT2Jc
Q3: Why are authentic audiences important to help Ss make connections w/the world beyond the classroom? https://t.co/sseGCu2eTq
Count me in as well. We are also doing Pax.
A3 Having an authentic aud. raises the bar. Kids produce higher quality work when they know it's going to be shared.
My desk is pretty much just a magnet for papers anyway. Good idea
HUGE GRA fan, especially when connected with S outside district! Authentic discussions!
Not only is the teaching eye opening, she frames things so beautifully!
A3: that one is tricky. I work hard to build a full inclusion environ 'in' Sch. It can get rugged out there.
I've been curious abt this too. Had success w blog/digital portfolio w Ss last yr w Wix but better app? https://t.co/ihbOdb4Ti7
What blogging platform do you use?
If you are doing PAX I have an amazing Novel HyperDoc!
A3 Gives students purpose and motivation knowing they have an authentic audience that cares about what they are saying and doing.
I remember learning 5 paragraph essays in middle school and then being told never to do those in college.
A3. We are in a very small community. Important for Ss to make connections outside their own world.
let me pull it up! It is amazing!
A3: to realize global citizens share same and different problems. Communications key to solving problems and ideas
tell me more about pen pal schools please!
A3 authentic audiences give more that validation to their voice & work. It also supports accountability. No plagiarism permitted.
A3: I think because students care so much more if their voices are heard. Like all of us!
I did the same. . Also, going to do stations on first day so I meet everyone in small groups.
Ditched mine 3 yrs ago,big shift in S and my attitude when that authoritarian power structure left.
Welcome Elissa! So glad to have you here!
Wow. Stations on the first day! That is great!
A3) authentic audiences help students be prepared for what is to come in high school and college and the real world.
have wanted to try gamification but don't feel like I know enough myself.
Love that! My desk is actually my small group area. Baby steps.
A3 Students to learn that writing is for more than just their teacher. It is a life skill and a world changer!
A3: I dreaded only doing work for the tchr. Global learning teaches more than any book. https://t.co/qIRXLDeHjy
Q3: Why are authentic audiences important to help Ss make connections w/the world beyond the classroom? https://t.co/sseGCu2eTq
Q4) How might Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat & social media apps help create relevant learning opportunities? https://t.co/M32JPimaQ5
Our SS curr. is World Geography so doing the Amazing Race w/Mission Impossible spy theme.
Yes! And raising empathy so important right now.
If you are familiar w/ the teach like a pirate series, explore like a pirate is awesome
It's where Ss go and Ps at this point - pull what they are into into classroom. https://t.co/Tguf5wMfW2
Q4) How might Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat & social media apps help create relevant learning opportunities? https://t.co/M32JPimaQ5
A4) Ss already use/are familiar w/these platforms; it is an easy transition to help them use these to showcase work, discuss ideas
I have to say I am loving this chat tonight, PLN. Such great input!
I think I got that from you! It is amazing! Planning to use it! ;) It is AWESOME!
If you are reading PAX for GRA here is an amazing Novel HyperDoc that I worked on with some amazing ladies
https://t.co/8mqYFqkVoe
A4 I think important for kids to develop a plc as well as teachers. They need to have others they can turn to beyond clsrm walls.
A4.1 I created a Twitter hashtag for a unit we were doing last year and the engagement between students and me was amazing.
A4: They could be used as a platform for them to collaborate with others, display work, ask questions, and connect.
I can see myself gathering small groups around the desk to make it more communal!
A4 These types of social media is THEIR learning world! Its a literacy we HAVE to help teach.
Teacher desk: oh you mean that place in the corner where papers pile up but you never find me!
A4.2 Ts connecting with others and connecting classrooms is so beneficial.
Yes every Friday we all sit I. The gym and two middle schoolers run the meeting and call for announcements etc
A1: I never used to assign seats, but a few yrs ago Ss said it was a HUGE source of stress at beginning of yr. Now I do random.
Lego building at one; writing at another; survey at another; and meet the teacher! :)
A4: Sidenote: Also great source for project fun! Last year did a Rev. War Instagram and a FB profile on a character.
A4: Social media is part of the "real world" these days. I need to work on using them more with my Ss. https://t.co/jPORJxjwTR
Q4) How might Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat & social media apps help create relevant learning opportunities? https://t.co/M32JPimaQ5
A4 I used our class Twitter a lot, kids loved the IG & Snapchat, this year I created a class FB also.
A4: instant engagement speak their language. 👏
I hat to leave this great but I have a big day tomorrow! Will it be archived
A4: This year, I want kids to produce podcasts.A lot.I'm hoping Twitter will draw attention and grow an audience for amazing work.
A4 My class participated in some twitter chats last year and really liked it. We connected twice with our GRA class using twitter.
I find that if papers are piling, then Im not giving timely feedback. BIGGEST challenge is to stay timely!
Love the theme! We tossed around amazing race as interdisciplinary unit theme
Many thanks! Cannot wait to see!
I have a twitter account for my Ss but I have not used Snapchat or Instagram yet. Need to figure that out.
- I love thinking of it as their own PLN.
I switch my kids every week, but when we are doing an assignment they can sit anywhere.
Cool idea. Turned out to be just too much pressure for kids to choose own seat right away. They appreciate it.
A3: w genius hr, blogs, digi-portfolios, was thrilling to see how much S awareness/learning blooms to share w audience, not vacuum
A4 Opens up opportunities for discussions about social media participation that is safe and useful.
Yes Leigh Anne! I will create a storify and post it on ! :)
just click on the link and make a copy! It is really cool
Good to know. Will try to be sensitive.
A4 social media provides authentic audiences for Ss, their work, ideas, learnings, & accomplishments.
Q5) How do you ensure social media interactions protect your Ss while giving them the opp. to share voices? https://t.co/HOUARwh2ze
I switch mine every week or two as well, but they stay in their groups to work. Get to know everyone that way.
Michael do you use a certain platform or are you creating your own?
Let me know what you think, it was an amazing project that I worked on at beg of summer with 3 women I had never met
creating my own based on the ideas from the book
I have started with Twitter...a class account. Ss don't tweet from individual accounts.
A5) Provide Ss w/specific lessons on this. I like the ones here https://t.co/btURjGZelY including digital footprint/cyber safety
A4) I learn so much interacting via Twitter, I want to try w Ss this yr. Like microblogging, collaborative https://t.co/inHbo6iU8r
Q4) How might Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat & social media apps help create relevant learning opportunities? https://t.co/M32JPimaQ5
Some new Ss didn't know anyone. Friendships change over summer. Others were "misfits." Random seats helps a lot.
biggest challenge, but the most important IMHO
A5 We use our classroom or school accounts when using social media at school.
yep that thing!
I am never there either!
- OHHHH, I love this idea. Would be a great slideshow to play at conferences.
Good luck!!! Enjoy your day!!
A5. Cyber safety and digital footprint is key.
I like that idea. I did something similar, but should involve Ss Great idea!
Bam! Exactly! https://t.co/Cmdqhv9r4V
A3: Authentic audiences show students we do work for a real audience not just for a teacher, gives purpose
Yes, I had it running in background at Meet the Teacher.
We constantly do Digital Citizenship, plus Ss bring in bad examples and we discuss. https://t.co/fvd4Sq4XKj
Q5) How do you ensure social media interactions protect your Ss while giving them the opp. to share voices? https://t.co/HOUARwh2ze
Me too! I love act site. They love when I hit the "make groups" button. MS kids all about fair.
Love the randomizer! Thanks!
We actually did a paper Instagram for MLK
A5 Ss can share their work without names or faces, some Ss like to tag themselves so their family will see it too.
Looking forward to connecting my class account with yours!
it's so nice when they can't say "why did you put me with ..." just "here are your partners "
Prob. in minority, but I see great value in teaching communication skills outside of social media. Most ideas transfer to SM.
A5: One thing I do is use and partner with one specific class. The interactions are private.
A3.2) Will use low-tech ways to 'chat' learning, too, like gallery walks, graffiti walls, 'twitter tables' - interactive audience
I have a personal Instagram and I only add my ss, it's been great keeping in touch this summer
Exactly! I use it for lots of things.
A5: One of the reasons I like is because I can moderate the comments made by the public on my student blogs.
on my books to read list! Have lurked some of his chats & am intrigued!
I love these methods and the kids do too.
Is using different social media platforms with Ss confusing for teachers or exhausting?
I loved it. A nicely guided interaction on a topic you choose; Ss connected through PenPalSchools;
it's really good - was my summer PD book. lots of great ideas for big & small implementation
- Is a class Twitter account private?
Do you have any sources of digital citizenship lessons? Anyone?
A6) I'd like to use it to share projects, invite Ss peer feedback, ask questions, share blogs, explore global issues w/each other
Total agree, comm skills a challenge, especially with S that have never been given permission for voice! https://t.co/7TU2gncINo
Prob. in minority, but I see great value in teaching communication skills outside of social media. Most ideas transfer to SM.
It is amazing! I couldn't believe my eyes when I opened it!
A6: Showcasing work. For some reason; HW Hotline jumped into my head.
said that can help Ts connect before/during discussions; I like the 2 hashtags.
Snapchat is confusing for me, but I let the Ss take it over to share / celebrate their work
A6 We could do class twitter chats. Plan ahead, one class moderates and plans questions.
I'd love to have a group to work with World History projects - it's a new subject for me this year!
Plus most of the drama we see in school comes from social media issues outside of school. School is a respite.
- Do you add the parents also?
A5 I have class twitter account that we use to tweet out updates & questions
I like that. Good for language/ writing skills.
A5) be intentional abt audience. Ss use 1st of mo rather than actual bday on SM accts. Control visibility. https://t.co/1GjKHW6nww
Q5) How do you ensure social media interactions protect your Ss while giving them the opp. to share voices? https://t.co/HOUARwh2ze
If you have a classroom acct, let's share them so we can follow one another. I started last yr & need to do more w/ it:
I find that most S havnet been taught HOW to use SM, why it becomes a place of contention. https://t.co/6Vp52pGdSQ
Plus most of the drama we see in school comes from social media issues outside of school. School is a respite.
One of the reasons I use it with students and have many conversations. https://t.co/u3298uYZjt
Plus most of the drama we see in school comes from social media issues outside of school. School is a respite.
most adults haven't either, and therein lies the problem
A6 Powerful safe way for kids to dev. authentic pln. Quick way to share out and have kids come up with chat ?'s over a topic.
I don't make it private, but Ss tweet from that account so their privacy is protected.
Exactly. Ss are just modeling themselves after the adults.
My goodness! Only 2 questions left! Number 7 coming up in one minute!
Was the last number I saw, 80% of people less than 30 get news from SM, not TV or traditional sources.
I prefer to work on empathy and kindness in general and then we can discuss in relation to SM.
A5.2) In blogs, set to moderate comments. Model digi lit/etiquette, standards for posting. Practice togethr https://t.co/1GjKHW6nww
Q5) How do you ensure social media interactions protect your Ss while giving them the opp. to share voices? https://t.co/HOUARwh2ze
A6: I would love if we could be intentional about to build relationship and audiences. https://t.co/To2o3MJrV5
If you have a classroom acct, let's share them so we can follow one another. I started last yr & need to do more w/ it:
A6. It sounds like a lot of us are reading . Can't wait to connect that way.
So it is one twitter account, that all the Ss have access to and can post from?
Q7) What are some other ways our Ss can interact globally to make connections & learn about our world? https://t.co/2yMWN1u3vH
Could be great for PAX interactions too? Thoughts?
Wait, did you send one? The chat is going so fast!
Yes, I think having a focus is a good way to get the kids to see the power behind a twitter hashtag.
Yes and that can make us more insular rather than connected and global https://t.co/DAJRWQ4iNZ
Was the last number I saw, 80% of people less than 30 get news from SM, not TV or traditional sources.
If I knew it was a parent I would, but I only have ss on now.
A7 Mystery skypes have been a favorite in my class. Really taps into critical thinking on the spot and collaboration.
I like this and would love to do something like this!
I like random. Also, S surveys to know seating pref (near window, near board, away fr traffic distractions) https://t.co/qHwiOFaFyg
Some new Ss didn't know anyone. Friendships change over summer. Others were "misfits." Random seats helps a lot.
A6 Yes, another way to celebrate the amazing things in our classes and as Ts
Yes. I know some Ts have students use initials at end of tweet if they want to have ownership like this K.E.K.
A7: Global Read Aloud share ideas through blogs padlets and skype
Who is going to read PAX and the GRA? We should make a list:
Let's plan on it. Are you doing GRA?
I see just the opposite, news no longer controled by 10%, but open to all in real time. https://t.co/dnQvseSrhj
Yes and that can make us more insular rather than connected and global https://t.co/DAJRWQ4iNZ
Was the last number I saw, 80% of people less than 30 get news from SM, not TV or traditional sources.
Yes, helps to have a separate hashtag where teachers can plan and discuss.
Yes, I am just sent out a tweet.
What is a mystery skype? https://t.co/MfQ0cHqAWi
A7 Mystery skypes have been a favorite in my class. Really taps into critical thinking on the spot and collaboration.
I am. My goal is to only cry a few times. Ch.1 = tears.
Yes, we do! Ss video message back and forth each week while learning STEM together!
Great idea for shared Twitter account! https://t.co/f7xFAdqkeu
Yes. I know some Ts have students use initials at end of tweet if they want to have ownership like this K.E.K.
So many gr8 educators having conversations on RIGHT now. Do other professions do this?
This is phenomenal! Thank you so much! I am going to set one up tonight for my class! A million thanks!
I love doing mystery skypes! they have been awesome!
Oh my gosh...there is so much to read on this chat! I am going as fast as I can! Amazing ideas friends!
I haven't taken the Mystery Skype plunge yet.
Check out . U skype with another class and try to find out their location by asking yes/no ?'s.
is great, but I want more projects / contact with the group to build relationships! https://t.co/n1hlgH6Rk5
Q7) What are some other ways our Ss can interact globally to make connections & learn about our world? https://t.co/2yMWN1u3vH
takes a bit of set up, but I feel very worth it.
Mystery Skypes are awesome for critical thinking!
I like this idea. We could have classrooms sign up for diff weeks to be responsible for weekly slow chat https://t.co/Q4xKL1aUGx
A6 Powerful safe way for kids to dev. authentic pln. Quick way to share out and have kids come up with chat ?'s over a topic.
A7) I'm curious abt this. My college buddy teaches Eqypt; I'm teachng ancient history...Skype? Blog? Tweet? https://t.co/GicBTJyXbB
Q7) What are some other ways our Ss can interact globally to make connections & learn about our world? https://t.co/2yMWN1u3vH
you two should set it up! :)
Caused by our lack of high level thinking, gotta push kiddos to select range of sources.
And an alarming number of people RT articles they have never read! Teachable moment w/Ss!
a8: We had an daughter a few years back - she's still in sweden, want to skype her more w/ my class
A8) Want to use so Ss can share work; do pen pals again for cultural learning
I really love this idea, let's plan on something!
The "practice together" piece is so important!
I'd totally be up for a or with any of your classes!
A8. My goal for this year is for students to Move Forward. Reading + passion projects to make global connections.
I have an entire year's worth of 7 minute quick writes on Google Slides. To be continued...
AMEN!! So prevalent in current politco climate! https://t.co/AUDIgfTqzJ
And an alarming number of people RT articles they have never read! Teachable moment w/Ss!
A8 Spend more time developing ways for students to go beyond the final project. More student choice.
A8 I have connected with a teacher from east coast to have our Ss be paper pencil pen pals
It also helps to get last minute announcements out...Don't forget....
things like that...
I've never done slow chat but would be interested!
A8) as Ss study ancient world hist, want them to see thematic patterns, connections, empathy in curr world https://t.co/NYjbrdVY6K
1. Create for the world.
2. Connect with at least two other classes (multiple times with these classes.) https://t.co/2ykR3226eQ
Then we partner with another class via Kidblog, share same Quick Write and they comment on each other. Willing to share.
I think we have a lot of people on to do skypes and connections w/via the !
I LOVE mysterySkypes/hangouts! If you want more info:
ms.mcdonald@student.somisusd.org
I'm open to connecting - Library media specialist (PK-6th grade)
Love this!! You gotta do this if you can! Awesome Anne! https://t.co/yRgrGOxPhf
Then we partner with another class via Kidblog, share same Quick Write and they comment on each other. Willing to share.
Popping in here to suggest pre-service teachers connecting with Ss. Win-win! <3
A8: Mysteryskype with 20 classes and complete at least one collaborative project with a class.
Yes a sith grade slow down! #
Wonder if there is a way to connect Poke Go ideas with this many classes.
