Prof Susan in IL working for student success when they go to college. Greetings to all on #engagechat
This week our baby barn swallows took to flight. Coming of age.
A1 Community partnerships give students a chance to see themselves in the community. Recently, we had a guest speaker who owned several McDonalds. Not only did he change students' perceptions of McDonalds employment; he also had many of them thinking business careers #engagechat

#engagechat glad to be here again...a good Sat morning from Singapore 👋
A1: community partnerships are important cos schools do not exist in isolation. They need the support from such partnerships to provide a more holistic education for the Ss.
A1) Schools are part of the community! They should have no choice but to engage. The community pays for the school; schools are accountable to the community. And partnerships yield better outcomes for students. #EngageChat
A1: Community partnerships are vital to a school’s success and to continue to grow a positive culture. We enjoy successful community partnerships at my school. Our churches, business partners and civic organizations all support us. We are very fortunate. #engagechat
A1 School & community partnerships provide reciprocal opportunities for growth for all involved. Ss can receive additional resources to support their exposure & learning. Communities receive a future citizenry who are acclimated to contributing meaningfully to society #engagechat
A1 Community partnerships are so important to give the Ss real world experiences, to show the community what is happening in our schools, and to provide role models for the Ss from different sectors of the workforce. #engagechat
A1: A strong partnership with our community helps build a bridge that serves both the school and community. We want our community to feel a part of the success of our schools and nurture our students to give back! #engagechat
A1 Community partnerships crucial for many reasons:
Internships & jobs
Students volunteering & civicmindedness
#JuniorAchievement volunteers in schools
Community tutors & mentors
Also partnerships w colleges & K-12
#engagechat
A1: A strong partnership with our community helps build a bridge that serves both the school and community. We want our community to feel a part of the success of our schools and nurture our students to give back! #engagechat
A2 having students brain strom an issue in the community and use the community as a tool to help solve it. For example volunteers, finically, or support #EngageChat
A2: HCPS has an incredible Ed Foundation, but I also think getting our Ss involved in community events and outreach is important, too. Student participation in parades, local cleaning efforts, etc. Be seen doing good. #EngageChat
A2 keep community informed about school events, invite members in to assist with events, create mentorships or job shadow opportunities, help students with career exploration, support school programs #EngageChat
A2: Schools partner with the community by asking them in! Our community partners are always willing to help, but they want to know what's going on in our school and how they can be the most help. Open and frequent communication! #engagechat

#engagechat A2: identify the areas in which we want our Ss to learn and grow...Then reach out to the organisations that can help support these areas ...at the same time these organisations must benefit too ....Partnerships must be mutually beneficial for them to be sustainable
A2: Through providing opportunities for our staff to serve the community through volunteering, partnering with organizations to provide opportunities for them to serve our families with needed services, using partners to inform us of what our S need to know #engagechat
Q2: you partner with the community by building relationships with various business, churches, organizations and even the mayor. This year, the mayor and town hall partnered with our school for field trips and volunteer support. #engagechat
A1: community partnerships are vital to our schools. They are parts in funding our schools and we provide them skilled workers. They give us insight what skills they need from their future workers.
#engagechat
A2. The school can give back. To often schools ask how can this partnership benefit us. Be willing to share you resources, facility, and expertise with the partners that support the school. #engagechat#twowaysupport
A2: We spotlight a character ed trait each month. We have nine local churches that partner with us to sponsor a monthly breakfast for students recognized for that trait. We also partner with our volunteer fire department for several fundraisers each year. #engagechat
A2. There are so many ways schools can engsge the community. This year I really want to focus on acts of kindness and service learning projects as a way to reach out. #EngageChat
A2: Partnerships with the community begins with two-way Communication and Collaboration. A great way to partner with the community is to share stories and engage them in celebrating student success. #EngageChat
#Truth give community partners a voice that is structured & organized. Just don’t say, “What do you need from us?” Make the communication purposeful #engagechat
#engagechat A2: identify the areas in which we want our Ss to learn and grow...Then reach out to the organisations that can help support these areas ...at the same time these organisations must benefit too ....Partnerships must be mutually beneficial for them to be sustainable
A2: Realize that a school district can’t solve or resolve school issues in isolation. It takes a community effort to expand, coordinate or strengthen initiatives that support a communities most precious resource - its children #engagechat
A2 Engage community leaders, educational specialists and other stakeholders in the process of education when approached. Many of us outside the system (I'm an edtech curricula designer) want to help. #engagechat
A2: Through providing opportunities for our staff to serve the community through volunteering, partnering with organizations to provide opportunities for them to serve our families with needed services, using partners to inform us of what our S need to know #engagechat
A2 #EngageChat - In our school, we seek incentive programs/reading rewards for example at local restaurants or book stores. This helps businesses to build a following, and the student gets a free treat! We also partner with local libraries to promote summer reading programs.
A2 School can connect with organizations with community connections. We just connected with @SENEDIA_ We have many students from military families and so connecting with the defense industry makes sense. We have already benefited greatly from this connection. #engagechat
Q2: you partner with the community by building relationships with various business, churches, organizations and even the mayor. This year, the mayor and town hall partnered with our school for field trips and volunteer support. #engagechat
A2: Our school partners with our local community college to offer dual enrollment classes, scholarships, advisory services, and more! It has been a fantastic partnership! #engagechat@FloridaGateway 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
A2. The school can give back. To often schools ask how can this partnership benefit us. Be willing to share you resources, facility, and expertise with the partners that support the school. #engagechat#twowaysupport
A2: give businesses direction. Remember, some have bad memories of school. We need to guide businesses w/ plans, success stories & help them create successful partnerships that benefit them & our communities #engagechat
I think there is a need for Ts to understand what thinking & problem solving looks like in the work world as it affects classroom content & practice #engagechat
A2: We spotlight a character ed trait each month. We have nine local churches that partner with us to sponsor a monthly breakfast for students recognized for that trait. We also partner with our volunteer fire department for several fundraisers each year. #engagechat
A2b: we’ve had success partnering in our community for our 8th grade Service learning program. Ss assisting local elementary Ss, refugees, the impoverished and the hungry #engagechat
Support or initiate a Youth Service Coalition comprised of community partners that will collaboratively work with schools to best meet the needs of children and young people #engagechat
A2 All of our teachers are expected to create 1 community contact. Our district has made that goal part of their mission statement. As a result, teachers are reaching out to colleges, neighbors and former students. It has really helped our students with how to network #engagechat
A2 School districts can partner with the community by letting everyone know what puzzle pieces they need assistance with to help students succeed! 💙 #EngageChat
A2: We send our message out into the community on our marquee or fence, on pizza boxes, at nursing homes in song, anywhere we're invited. We deliver pizzas and carhop at the Sonic. Anywhere we're invited, we go. Together we're stronger! #engagechat
I agree! That’s why Ts should be attending job shadow experiences & “Career Cafe’s” at schools & businesses. Problem solving in school & in business are 2 different things #EngageChat
A2) Become a community center in itself. Think about it: If you’re a visitor, where do you go? Add a parents’ lounge. Keep the library open for community use. Automatic community engagement!
I’d be curious if any of your schools are doing something like this. #EngageChat

A1 School & community partnerships provide reciprocal opportunities for growth for all involved. Ss can receive additional resources to support their exposure & learning. Communities receive a future citizenry who are acclimated to contributing meaningfully to society #engagechat
A3: Time will always be a barrier. Most of our community partners want to meet during the day, and I need to be in the building and in classrooms. #engagechat#struggleisreal
A3 While it is a mandate in our district for every teacher to develop 1 community contact, some teachers don't know where to start. We designed a PLC focused solely on how to find a partnership, create a partnership and sustain a partnership. #engagechat
A2: You ask! Businesses get hit up for money all the time for this and that fundraisers, but they are rarely asked to have a partnership. They are invested in the future success of the community...and that starts with the youth. Invite them in. Work together on a project/event!
A3 One of the biggest barriers is the need for background checks for anyone involved with students. The safety is needed but the expense can keep people away. Another barrier is the liabillity issues that bussinesses often worry about. #engagechat
#engagechat A1 community partnerships are important because you cannot do things alone. Even with the best ideas and concepts you still need an audience & megaphone to implement your ideas that’s where community comes in
I would love to do that but so far I've only gotten to informally interview high-tech people & haven't made it to work. I've watched a few Silicon Valley employment videos, but I feel like I'm trying to peek in a cloudy fishbowl. #engagechat
I worked at a community school in Florida. I was open until 10am. It had various activities, employeed our high school Ss to run activities, and held free GED and English classes for our community. #engagechat
A3: TIME can be a big barrier, but good investments of our time pay off in huge dividends and returns. We must make time for what we value and community partnerships are SO valuable. Our Rotary, for example, pays to ship our soldier care pkgs each year. SO important. #engagechat
Student Ambassadors also help in this regard. Instead of making visitors guess where they are going and where they are...let them know! Let’s Ss Share the history & experiences of the schools #EngageChat
#engagechat A1 community partnerships are important because you cannot do things alone. Even with the best ideas and concepts you still need an audience & megaphone to implement your ideas that’s where community comes in
A3 One of the biggest barriers is the need for background checks for anyone involved with students. The safety is needed but the expense can keep people away. Another barrier is the liabillity issues that bussinesses often worry about. #engagechat
A3: I am fortunate to not have this problem but I know some who do not welcome and invite their community in to create a positive partnership. This would be a major roadblock to successful partnerships. #engagechat
A3: Barriers include protecting territorial interests, that's not the purpose for schools, fear of becoming overwhelmed by issues, insufficient resources of time and money #engagechat
A3: #engagechat sometimes policies, confidentiality, financial, and safety concerns prevent community involvement. There are often hoops to go through to start partnerships, even if they are mutually beneficial.
A3: Time- some organizations can not provide support during school day or don’t have the resources to allow staff to leave during the day. The State Employees Credit Union in our community provides volunteer support once a month. #engagechat

A3 Ts don't always have the time, energy or even the opportunity to do the work required to engage community. Administrators can serve as facilitators, but they're often as overworked. No easy answers. #engagechat
#engagechat A3: a lack of planning or interest in the holistic development of Ss may result in less enthusiasm in seeking opportunities. Partnerships also need relationship building and maintenance from both sides. Some are better at this than others.
A3 Great question, but part of the answer is difficult.
Big barriers include the lack of community involvement by educators (Ts&profs) & admins. Many live outside districts. Time & distance become challenges.
#engagechat
A3. One sided relationships. Broken trust. Schools forgetting to say thank you. Community partners must know how valuable they are to the schools overall success. #EngageChat#EdChat#StrongerTogether
A3) The school structure isn’t set up for it. Such partnerships are valued theoretically but there isn’t always the knowledge of how to build them. Another barrier: Lack of commitment of key stakeholders—mainly school and community leadership. #EngageChat
A3: I am fortunate to not have this problem but I know some who do not welcome and invite their community in to create a positive partnership. This would be a major roadblock to successful partnerships. #engagechat
That’s too bad. Try partnering w/ companies & having students visit on site and creating presentations for the company’s on how the company’s can get better. Make it a win-win for companies so site visits help the Ss & businesses grow #engagechat
A3) The other mindset to overcome is the thought that the community partnership has to involve your whole class. Coming up for something for 28 kids is hard. Coming up with 6 things for 5 kids is easier #engagechat
A3: Time and resources! Love to take kids to local businesses to see the work in action, but it is A LOT of work behind the scenes with permission slips, transportation, and more. #engagechat
A3) The school structure isn’t set up for it. Such partnerships are valued theoretically but there isn’t always the knowledge of how to build them. Another barrier: Lack of commitment of key stakeholders—mainly school and community leadership. #EngageChat
A3 Lack of understanding of the needs on both sides can hinder the creation & sustaining of partnerships. However, it's imperative that schools & communities purposefully communicate about needs & resources for support. This shifts barriers to best chances for success #engagechat
A2: At the beginning of each school year do a needs assessment for the parents and guardians of students. It can be a simple survey of just one question how can we help you? Then based off of what they need provide it in the form of family nights and spirit nights. #engagechat
Always, always be sensitive to different school experiences. Many young people couldn’t wait to be out in the business world just to finally get away from school! So: Prove to them that it’s changed, that you serve students the way they should’ve been. #EngageChat
A2: give businesses direction. Remember, some have bad memories of school. We need to guide businesses w/ plans, success stories & help them create successful partnerships that benefit them & our communities #engagechat
I believe the only real barriers are our inability think outside of the box. If the community is being invited and not coming we need to think a little differently about our methods. Are we out of touch with our community and there needs.
A3: The absence of respect and trust, especially in schools that believe community members should meet them half way. We must always meet them where they are. #EngageChat
A2b: we’ve had success partnering in our community for our 8th grade Service learning program. Ss assisting local elementary Ss, refugees, the impoverished and the hungry #engagechat
There are school leaders who are content to "eat at the public trough" without serving up their gift and talents to support those for whom the community schools exist. #engagechat
A3: The absence of respect and trust, especially in schools that believe community members should meet them half way. We must always meet them where they are. #EngageChat
Could be part of the school board’s mission, whether public or private. Often board members are actively involved in community and could be tasked with being liaisons between school and larger community #engagechat
A3: The biggest barrier is communication and transparency. The community might not know how to help and the school might not know how to help the community. Break barriers and go out and talk to people. Invite people in and go out and seek them. #engagechat
A4) Our school is in an industrial area soI started by just walking around and knocking on doors.
Also ask families, they often are looking for an in to be involved #engagechat
A4 by having students write thank you notes, hosting an appreciation night, having students host a night where they show off their PBL or a shark tank type of night. #EngageChat
If you have a cafeteria that can handle it, one of the coolest things I’ve seen done is open up your cafeteria and host a Sunday brunch for community. Opens your campus, provides opportunity to showcase and advertise student work/events. (Bonus: amazing fundraiser!) #engagechat
A3 #engagechat barriers are simiar to my field, lack of #networking opportunities, fear of approaching #businesses or potential partners for mutual goals due to rejection, lack of time to go out of your way to netwoork because of the demands of #career & home
Boeing was super-helpful when I explained how we can introduce every HS student to STEM in their core algebra classes without sacrificing content.. They gave me an entire class set of Chromebooks. #engagechat
A4 At the end of every school year, we send out a flyer to all students to take home to parents with a list of our community members. In addition, I have modeled for students how to write professional thank you notes. #engagechat
A3: A barrier I’ve experienced is not hearing back from possible partners and not having time for multiple call backs. It’s important to follow up with another call or email! #engagechat
A4: As Supt, our district published a special Newsletter for Key Partners and hosted an annual learning experience with our Friends of Education recognition #engagechat
A4 by having students write thank you notes, hosting an appreciation night, having students host a night where they show off their PBL or a shark tank type of night. #EngageChat
Q4: Through social media, patronizing them when you can, talking them up in the community, making sure our families know who those partners are, making sure our Ss know what they have done for them #engagechat
A4 Recognizing credible community partners is harder than it seems. As an individual approaching schools with tools, I find this a HUGE challenge. https://t.co/bzaJN9WkyV#engagechat
We must not only look to community partnerships as a means of securing funding that we can't from our school or district...what value can we both add to each other #engagechat
Incidentally, schools serve families by educating their children. But this goes back to the point made about the “whole child”—education and growth are so much more than what kids experience inside a classroom. #EngageChat
A2: Through providing opportunities for our staff to serve the community through volunteering, partnering with organizations to provide opportunities for them to serve our families with needed services, using partners to inform us of what our S need to know #engagechat
A4: When I blog about ways in which our community has helped us, I always give them a little shout out! We've also had our kids make thank-you cards to community partners! https://t.co/Kt1J0CLKKq#engagechat
If you have a cafeteria that can handle it, one of the coolest things I’ve seen done is open up your cafeteria and host a Sunday brunch for community. Opens your campus, provides opportunity to showcase and advertise student work/events. (Bonus: amazing fundraiser!) #engagechat
A4 In addition to the genuine thank you, our schools have a Volunteer and Community Partners Brunch where our students lead a program that provides tangible examples of how the community's support has helped them grow. All organizations are recognized during the event #engagechat
A4: gratitude. Relationships are lasting when all parties feel respected and appreciated. Simple gestures can have profound effect, especially at the outset of the partnership #engagechat
A4: As Supt, our district published a special Newsletter for Key Partners and hosted an annual learning experience with our Friends of Education recognition #engagechat
A4 We send out thank you letters, stop by the businesses and drop off wristbands, lanyards, etc... as small tokens of our appreciation. We also hold recognition at halftime of sporting events and try to present a plaque. #engagechat
A4 #engagechat Thank you letters and cards from students, recognition at board meetings, invitations to participate in craft fairs/business bazaars, school newsletters, signs indicating who materials were donated by, etc.

Our community members like thiank yous and plaques the Ss have made themselves to put in their business. We also have a community banquet where we recognize them and present them with certificates. #engagechat
A4: Celebrate the parners and have random flash support where school personnel show up with students and parents to support the buisaness or partners on random celebration days so they can see the faces they are impacting. #engagechat
A4 In finding prospective community partners, we need to be open to diverse possibilities & not rule out any group.
Peoria Public School are working on a large AlignmentPeoria initiative with many stakeholders.

#engagechat A2 great idea, in my kid's school the parents hung out in front of the school before picking up the kids like a little community. Here, the teacher and principal disseminated information about activities and school fundraisers, it fostered a sense of family

#engagechat A5: here in Singapore, my school looks out for community partnerships such as with the neighbourhood police post, a children's cerebral palsy association, a special needs ed school etc...Again, back to the intention of all these: what do we want our children to learn?
#engagechat A4 in our community, I see plaques of advertisement for #businesses discreetly on the walls. Most understand it's for children's education. It gives incentive for businesses to share their valuable resources for the sake of raising funds for #educational activities
A5 So many great ideas & initiatives. This would be a great chat to serve as the basis for a guidebook on this topic.
The knowledge & experience consistently on #engagechat could easily produce valuable texts on the subjects & questions from @EngageChat
