Hi! Cathy, 7/8 science from Chicago 🔬🤓⚗💡📚
A1: Most important that adolescents know Ts and Parents Care about their learning and efforts
A1 Ss need to know that their Ts appreciate their unique attributes. Investment in Ss interests goes a long way.
Students need emotional and behavioral support, before academic support. Relationships first! Second and third.
Wendie here... 7th grade english, history, and drama teacher
A1- I think that adolescents need to have a sense of belonging and security. Without feeling safe & wanted they will not be engaged
A1 Students need to know they matter. They need to know the adults in the school see each as a valued person.
A1: A listening ear. Ss knowing they can come to you to make life easier for them will open the doors in the classroom.
A1 Personalized support - every student has different needs!
A1 Maybe the most important support is our unconditional support. They have to know we will be there no matter what.
A1 Relationships! They need to know that you believe in them.
A1) Ss need to have support that stems from knowing them & their individual needs
A1: Relationships are key-w/o them emotions and academics falter
A1 Of course our Ss are so different, but I think all need validation, respect, & specific strategies to navigate their world
A1: I think Ss need support socially bc they struggle with identity in MS which cause many behavior issues
A1: They need to feel loved. Such an awkward age. Love them & believe in them. Help them navigate the transition to teenager.
A1: I think strong SEL support is essential in ms. We can't teach the content if Ss aren't emotionally present
You adolescents need love and support. Most importantly when they are not fully themselves.
A1 The best kind of support is kind support, caring support, support that puts a kid above a standard, above a policy.
A1 ss need to know they are cared for, they are loved, and that they matter.
A1. Every Ss is so different in middle grades so all need different support. W/ that said, think social-emo is most important b/c...
A1: HOPE that they have help to move from current reality to where they want to get to, whether academically, socially, etc
A1 Ss need to feel valued and connected; that their contributions matter - that THEY matter.
A1 This is so very true! https://t.co/x8VrNaFlnU
A1. Every Ss is so different in middle grades so all need different support. W/ that said, think social-emo is most important b/c...
Definitely! Their voices needs to be heard and acted on
MS kids are desperate to fit in and feel normal. They need to be valued and validated! https://t.co/ep0IgnPvJE
Here's Q1 for : What is the most important kind of support that young adolescents need? Why?
Like Mazlow's heirarchy of needs, yeah?
A1: MS S's need a consistant advocate that will be firm/nurturing to help guide them & be there for them
Welcome back timing is not working out just sitting down to dinner. Will join and catch up later!
A1: Comprehensive support that addresses varying needs of teens including social emotional. https://t.co/2uXSaVhAPb
Here's Q1 for : What is the most important kind of support that young adolescents need? Why?
customized support and individual relationships are so important to adolescents
A1: Students need to know that they will SUCCEED and that SCHOOL CARES about them!
any connection is valuable!
A1:The most important supports are relational. They need to know their teacher cares.
A1 more: their emotional lives R in flux & uncertainty. We need 2 bolster them emotionally & then they can attend academically
So true! Have to take care of Ss basic needs first!
and they know when teachers exhibit love!
Even when they seem to push us away. https://t.co/gfSnyxnzWL
A1 Maybe the most important support is our unconditional support. They have to know we will be there no matter what.
A1- Adolescents each need something different. Some need a challenge, some engaged parents, some need confidence, and others food.
A1 also very important that our S's understand their purpose at school. Why are they here
S's need emotional safety in the classroom to be successful https://t.co/r5FKfoqZRa
A1: I think strong SEL support is essential in ms. We can't teach the content if Ss aren't emotionally present
absolutely, I think educators need to make sure students have those needs met each and every day
I like this. https://t.co/2L0R16BPGo
A1 Ss need to feel valued and connected; that their contributions matter - that THEY matter.
YES the WHY school is so important!
A1: Relationships are key. They need to feel safe, heard, and appreciated as the unique individuals they are
A1 Those who need us most will push us away the hardest.
A1: Adol. need support to grow physically, mentally, & intellectually. Growth centers around relationships. https://t.co/VulG6Mdjs9
Here's Q1 for : What is the most important kind of support that young adolescents need? Why?
Adolescents need to know that they are cared about and that the best thing they can do is learn from their mistakes
A1- Ss need to know we care and that they are important...that their opinions matter and that they have a choice.
A1.2: ms Ss need skills with peer relationships, coping skills, bullying and peer pressure. We need to model for them
A1 we provide a safe learning environment "do-overs" are ok, learning is a lifelong journey; Tt support the learning
Can just start the school year with rules and procedures, NEED action, NEED the WHY SCHOOL moments
Consistency is key for all students!
That's part of why some many non-teachers can't understand why we choose to do this job!
RT Mr_Lisek: This should be must read for all parents of students entering the middle level https://t.co/KoDa4EV4Ru
A1 Kids can’t grow if they don’t know they matter.
"do-overs" are ok - love this! Especially at such a transitional time in Ss lives.
A1...to provide a safe, loving, non judgmental environment with high expectations
That’s the truth! https://t.co/prCV2y8eMT
That's part of why some many non-teachers can't understand why we choose to do this job!
Yes! We need to embrace and realize it isn't necessarily us.
The trick is a grading/assessment/reporting system that reflects this priority....
Totally agree! It's what makes teaching so complicated, esp. in low income schools.
Yes. Failure is okay, as long as it's learned from. https://t.co/zaO7ocJZYv
Adolescents need to know that they are cared about and that the best thing they can do is learn from their mistakes
A1: Young adolescents are trying to be little adults. They don't want teachers to be condescending.
A1 (part 2): Saw the Rita Pierson TED talk again today where she reminds is that Ss won't learn from Ts they don't like. Convicting!
It's important that we communicate properly with these students. https://t.co/ce1GiORkyx
A1 Those who need us most will push us away the hardest.
Agreed Failure is a step along a path not a destination or end point!
no trick Build a BrickHouse Culture
The mistake occurs when we don't learn from it. https://t.co/0i9VyUrUuD
Yes. Failure is okay, as long as it's learned from. https://t.co/zaO7ocJZYv
Adolescents need to know that they are cared about and that the best thing they can do is learn from their mistakes
A1 MS ought to be a place where mistakes are chances to get it right, not the time where it means we failed.
A1: Individual connections are everything in ms. Ss aren't going to learn from Ts they don't feel safe/comfortable with
Agreed! We need to show them we are on the same side instead of our side
Respect is everything. If students know you respect and love them, they'll do anything for you. Trust is essential.
We need to take the time even if we feel pressed for time!
when we allow students to fail, failure becomes ok, set supported high expectations
Exactly. They should be encouraged to fail because it means they took a chance, a risk. https://t.co/mvJ4e4JcU5
A1 MS ought to be a place where mistakes are chances to get it right, not the time where it means we failed.
This is getting me excited to meet my new school family on Monday!!!
YES!! We need to help teach our S's how the situstion wasnt as expected and then how they can succeed
A1 I think they need 2 know that my feelings for them won't change if they do poorly on an assignment or if they make a bad decision
Ahoy, ! We're definitely going full steam ahead on the high seas of learning! Q2 is coming up soon!
That takes time! I see grand plans by other Ts like election chats for 1st month and I think "no way, not yet!"
We have to invest time, spending time is wasting time. Our students are worth the investment, ALL OF THEM! https://t.co/DDcT4t4KDS
We need to take the time even if we feel pressed for time!
A1 So administrators need to support Ts taking risks, too. https://t.co/m6g8yIRrgC
Exactly. They should be encouraged to fail because it means they took a chance, a risk. https://t.co/mvJ4e4JcU5
A1 MS ought to be a place where mistakes are chances to get it right, not the time where it means we failed.
We need to show them our mistakes, ans model how we persevere through those moments. https://t.co/V9QXLkuEgF
So often kids are afraid to try bc they might fail... We need to foster environments where mistakes are OK
Social-emo support is important, but most important would be to challenge all Ss to push the boundaries of their own lrng.
Q2 for : How do you and your school identify students who need additional support?
A1a: "Failing is just another word for growing" they need to know we'll be there to help them get back up and try again
it does take time but is worth it. Respect starts the moment they walk in the door. I love this age.
A2: Grade level teams meet weekly to discuss Ss in need of support and we communicate w the SEL staff and parents
A2: In a classroom setting, Ts use multiple types of formative assessment to differentiate
A2 Academic, SEL, behavioral?
A2: If the relationships are built, it is easier to identify who needs additional support.
A2) We test all 5th graders for giftedness now, are starting RIT for Ss who need help, T recommendation key
A1 FAIL 2 establish a rapport w/ studs the biggest battle will be earning their trust and respect. They need 2kno, u kno they can!
A2 I’m more interested in the help needed not shown by a low test score.” Who is hungry? Who is alone? Who is scared? Who hurts?
A2 Use evidence of T & S relationships on assessment wall just like any other data
A2 We have to get to know the S's. Again, if we invest the time we will begin to know them & their needs.
even those that are not immediately on our radar
A2: Additional support needs can be academic, emotional, or social. Meaningful T interactions w/ Ss help identify needs.
A2. Use the team approach, but also loop in the encore/elective teachers too. Involve everyone
A2) Our AP developed a Student Snapshot document our teams share and use to track student needs & supports.
A2 We keep a school-wide list of students who have missing assignments. Every adult in our school has access to the list.
Yes... The heart of it. https://t.co/3mo7w46RKt
A2 I’m more interested in the help needed not shown by a low test score.” Who is hungry? Who is alone? Who is scared? Who hurts?
Many Ss try things once & give up. As would say, "Teach kids to embrace confusion." https://t.co/J6nXXLdyrH
A1 MS ought to be a place where mistakes are chances to get it right, not the time where it means we failed.
A2) Create opportunities to LISTEN to our students and their needs will emerge.
A2 When it comes to reading, I get kids to write me a letter telling me what help they want this year. I just ask. .
A2: Ss Identified by teachers: using formative assessments and examining evidence of learning
A2: We are a communicative staff. That helps to identify kids who need extra love. At our school, EVERY kid on campus is "my" kid.
A2: We are pairing up Ss identified as "at risk" by our int school and pairing them with our adults who we call "lifelines."
A2) in my room, chatting w Ss, formative assessments, observations, etc. - so many different things to help check on Ss
And district ldrs needs to support school admin takings risks!
A2 Comprehensive support system including teams, behavior coach, admin, counselors, parents meet regularly to support in all areas
A2 There is no "easy" way! We have to be willing to do the work & build relationships.
So important 2 get all voices in the chorus singing together 4 all students! https://t.co/pMPjgrvjGx
A2. Use the team approach, but also loop in the encore/elective teachers too. Involve everyone
A2 I ask kids: What are you great at? What do you want to get better at? What’s your biggest worry?
A2 avoidance behaviors to me indicate a student may be struggling
Agreed need to make our failures visible to show how we get up and persevere
A2: T's use observations, interactons, & assessment to help identify those S's in need of additional social/emotional assistance
Ooh! Would love 2 see that document! Mind sharing it with the crew? https://t.co/dxjjcjAg06
A2) Our AP developed a Student Snapshot document our teams share and use to track student needs & supports.
A2 This is such an important point to remember! https://t.co/L0NIW9rCwP
A2 avoidance behaviors to me indicate a student may be struggling
So true. Such a small but powerful act...just ask them what they need help with.
A2. ID teams=vital 2 identifying Ss who needed more support. Ts met regularly & discussed Ss & how 2 better serve them. Not gripe
A2 Also mentors, peer mentors and advisement .... Must know our kids. Mission=Every Child, Every Chance, Every Day. We live it.
A2. Also used previous yrs discipline data 2 recommend Ss 4 additional SEL help/mentoring/advocacy. Not 100% perfect but an effort
When the adults pay attention ... the students who need extra support or TLC are obvious.
A2: Some Ss are experts at hiding their needs. Sincere conversations w/ Ss can create a partnership. Trust.
Yes! We need to take risks to achieve success w/ Ss and be effective
A2 relationships first! With the kids, and their families. And having a AM homeroom checkin.
A2 Hope stands quietly in a corner. We need to open eyes to see.
It's why I'm never afraid to admit to the Ss: well that didn't go like I planned.
yes, we hired coaches for Principals this year to help them w/ their own prof growth needs.
A2: Weekly meetings focused on Ss success plans. We discuss Ss interaction and analyze data.
This is so important. Thanks for the reminder. https://t.co/aS4FVlJhIZ
It's why I'm never afraid to admit to the Ss: well that didn't go like I planned.
modified schedule 2day@week for tutorials common formative assessment data, 2day@week PLC Tt collaboration MAGIC
A2 School academic support monitors test scores. I'm busier giving reading/writing/interest surveys and conferencing to assess.
Data on all levels (not just academic) is important to move forward in education as long as it is intentional
A2: Our PLC teams look at data and discuss student learning every other week!
That's such a gr8 investment! How many schools have coaches 4 their principals? https://t.co/glq8Pn86bF
yes, we hired coaches for Principals this year to help them w/ their own prof growth needs.
About establishing the atmosphere of finding a way to help all S's, not find find a way around the tough 1's https://t.co/xrKrX0lTfK
A2. ID teams=vital 2 identifying Ss who needed more support. Ts met regularly & discussed Ss & how 2 better serve them. Not gripe
A2. Also have students engage in identifying themselves activities in TA- let them tell their story
A2: We also share anecdotal information with the next years Ts to help support those Ss right away
A2: By observing, monitoring, & tracking informal/formal data. Each notecard on data wall represents a child. https://t.co/J9nHVl4MA1
A2 Ss who may need Xtra support are ID'd through formative assessments and Ts "kid watching"/anecdotal data collection.
MS science teacher jumping in from Ohio. Ready to listen and learn!
YES, Students will often self-identify their strengths and weaknesses
And "Hope is the thing with feathers that perches in the soul" (Dickinson). We need 2 help all Ss soar. https://t.co/5r3cyqdeLh
A2 Hope stands quietly in a corner. We need to open eyes to see.
Interesting idea! https://t.co/d4hFra4IRQ
yes, we hired coaches for Principals this year to help them w/ their own prof growth needs.
Everyone has a story! Love to hear the personal stories! https://t.co/xSCsUa0sNP
A2. Also have students engage in identifying themselves activities in TA- let them tell their story
ok sorry i am late...timing ugh! What is up Colleen, STL, MO, Modern Language
Great chat! Have to pick up kid now from field hockey!
A2 Every time a child is reduced to a data point, the first thing that happens is that a child is reduced.
Yes Colleen, On Question 2 about how we identify students that need assistance in their learning
A2 Important to include Ss in identifying needs. We are 1:1 district. Google surveys give us quick S feedback they may not verbalize
Keep on keeping on, shipmates! All oars in the educational seas for Q3!
they really know! And can be harder on themselves than we would be.
So true, data helps but our students are SO much more than data
those personal stories can tell us a lot about why our S's carry themselves the way they do
OMG! Love using google forms to get quick feedback...for formative assessment & to ask for their thoughts
We have 9 schools. They are in triads for coaching. Indiv and group time for each.
A2 Yes. Knowing a child’s scores is not the same as knowing the child. https://t.co/k5Y2swSQaV
So true, data helps but our students are SO much more than data
A1 - Today's students need guidance, support & help pushing their limits
We do something very similar! Must have data- formative, summative, anecdotal, and S self-assessment! https://t.co/XmKSIdhvQS
modified schedule 2day@week for tutorials common formative assessment data, 2day@week PLC Tt collaboration MAGIC
And ask, What was the worst part for you? How can we improve it?
Here's Q3 for : What programs do U have at your school 2 support students—academically and/or behaviorally? Challenges/triumphs?
Ditto! I do a survey after each quarter to guide my instruction for the future https://t.co/AYpTxqaXEB
OMG! Love using google forms to get quick feedback...for formative assessment & to ask for their thoughts
So quick and instant feedback. Love the new quiz feature too! https://t.co/bJniEv3KNJ
OMG! Love using google forms to get quick feedback...for formative assessment & to ask for their thoughts
They can also share things that are strengths or what makes them unique to demythify stereotypes. https://t.co/2iX3FKYAbe
they really know! And can be harder on themselves than we would be.
Q3: I am currently at a new school, I am excited to see what they have in place in for programs.
A3: For behavior we use PBIS which is working well with most students for academic we have a range of intervention plans
A3 we have a positive leadership group that as get nominated to! Anyone can get nominated by a teacher, almost all want in
A2 The BEST MS I ever saw went from lowest to highest performing when the principal said kids count more than test scores count.
Hey , I was so eager to join and still arrived late. I'm Paul, MS SSW in a therapeutic classroom & Happy 2B joining the chat.
A4: Daily check-ins and check-outs with same T and Ss have a point plan with rewards for Tier 3 academic support
A3 we have peer tutoring, i&rs, crisis team

A3) We run an Extended Learning Program (ELP) after school, 2 days a week, for all students in danger of failing. Also have HW club.
A3 I see a lot of kids making reading progress with the 100 book challenge from
VIP after schl program for at-risk; academic, social, organization skills embedded w/ enrichment/life experiences off campus
A3 We have a gr8 environment for most of our S's. Working on catching them all! PLC is key. FISH philosophy infant stages
A3 We use the approach. Every student can complete every assignment if given extra time and extra help!
A3: We have classroom interventions, Reteaching sessions, Homework club, and RTI as some of our academic programs to lift students
Quiz feature? I hadn't heard about that!
BUG (bringing up grades) awards for improvement
Q3: we have Saturday School, to help with students have fallen behind in class work.
A3: VIP after schl program for at-risk; academic, social, organization skills w/ enrichment/life experiences off campus
DO they all show up? Our students that needed it most would not attend
A3: Our SEL team facilitates small peer focus groups targeting specific needs (peer relations/anger/bullying/organization)
Exactly! They often have so many ideas to help problem solve
A3: Lunch groups for social/academic support, Hang Time after school, flex period to tap into new interests
A3. We had advisory 2 support all Ss & mentoring prgm 2 serve behaviorally/socially at-risk Ss. Challenge: family support
A3 I use “in the loop” meetings w/ schls where groups-by grade or content-gather for 10 minute meetings to keep all in loop.
I do not know, my first year at the school, just got the email today outline the expectations. . I will let you know
A3- Built time 2 d/wk for to help Ss with academic prob. Challenge- the will or will/skill kids. https://t.co/PEQxJ3OpoP
Here's Q3 for : What programs do U have at your school 2 support students—academically and/or behaviorally? Challenges/triumphs?
What kind of mindset to students present when they attend Saturday School?
A3) For behavior, we have an online tracker that runs on our school's server that all Ts can update with information
A3: Fast Focus daily schedule for intervention/enrichment/relationship building
A3: we have used PBIS & counseling services. I have used methods from to help inspire my S's
This is my first year at the school. I will let you know!
During what periods of time are your RTI services implemented?
Great idea! Manageable when Ts feel time is limited!
A4: Used process called SNAP(Ss Needing Additional Practice) acad/behav help. Great! Challenge =scheduling! https://t.co/TBUGugWhg3
Here's Q3 for : What programs do U have at your school 2 support students—academically and/or behaviorally? Challenges/triumphs?
Exactly! Life is not a standardized test. Kids deserve to know they are not defined by a score https://t.co/WXFErJRNyW
A2 The BEST MS I ever saw went from lowest to highest performing when the principal said kids count more than test scores count.
A3 I like “caught you being good/kind/funny/friendly/happy/ studious” cards that faculty hand out throughout the day.
Intriguing... Tell me more about this behavior coach?
Ss are pulled from 1 specials class for 10 week blocks, can earn way out
A3 - we also use a positive behavior system & various levels of counseling
A3: A Child Study team to work to find interventions for extreme behavior issues and academic support.
A3 Have "Pride Time" S's behind come for working lunch to make up work or get help!
Google form now has quiz feature built in! Easy to use!
What are you using as a screener or benchmarking tool?
A3: each grade level celebrates academic/behavior with positive postcards home and student certificates chosen by the team
I will definitely have to check that out! Thanks!
She meets with students and provides support, behavior plans, meets with ts to guide us, and so much more! https://t.co/eqnJdBFevT
Intriguing... Tell me more about this behavior coach?
Reteaching is so important. Can't just reassess and expect different results.
What does a child study team look like?
This is my first year at this school...I will keep you all informed
Always a tough 1: how do those kids catch up in those specials classes if they're pulled out all the time? https://t.co/tqK0CtMU02
Ss are pulled from 1 specials class for 10 week blocks, can earn way out
We screen using district assessments that check on grade/skill level proficiencies (Also NWEA is used)
We have a "ribbon of recognition" we give out each week to 2 Ss to recognize growth/awesome things/etc
A3 positive behavior intervention system with a school matrix (eagles rise) helps ss remember expectation in various locations
If a child is “earning his way out” then it sounds like a place that’s a punishment. Yes? https://t.co/1PCFWWNZ1A
Ss are pulled from 1 specials class for 10 week blocks, can earn way out
Yeah they don't miss the specials class for that quarter or rotation (sad that we have to do that)
Yes! We have PAWS stickers - used as intermitted reinforcers for positive behavior. Most of our students really buy-in
Here's Q4 for : How do you keep families involved & informed when you provide additional support for their children? Challenges?
Glad to see my Eagle peeps joining us!
That is amazing! Did you see this ? - a Behavior Coach!
Sad that we place more value on certain skills (Math, ELA, Science and SS) and less value on others (Art, music, etc)
We have better luck with after school help. United Way Heartland Region provides funding for bussing.
Yes! Principal/AP comes in and reads a little bio in their P1 class and an official email gets sent home to Ps
A4 Want buy-in from parents? ALWAYS start with a compliment, not a complaint.
A3: my old school had homework club where leadership Ss would work with other Ss to provide support in learning & peer relationships
Yes, and need 2 define what reteaching. Can't just B individual help using same strategies. https://t.co/105fr6qvTe
Reteaching is so important. Can't just reassess and expect different results.
Sounds like it yes, but better than being stuck in a intervention program with no path out! no motivation if stuck
A4 we use open houses to provide parents an opportunity to see what the day is like for SS...
A3 We have academic intervention services, ELL supports, 4 levels of Spec Ed support, TA's. Moving towards an inclusion model.
A4: Consistent contact home. Even if you can't always talk to parents, make sure they see their child's progress. VM, email, text
Made up of our school psychologist, admin, socl workers, and sp ed director. Team observes Ss in question in class.
A4: Newsletters, webchats/webinars, dept.-focused family nights, phone calls
A4) Lucky enough that we can email all Ps. The challenge is sometimes they don't respond/are on vacation/etc
especially since some kids who struggle academically may shine in the fine arts.
A4: Then follow up w/ them. Key word = consistency.
A4- Always a struggle finding time to reach out to parents on a consistent basis to encourage support of their student
A4: Parents are a critical component in schools: Constantly report progress and make them a partner in the process
A4: continuous communication, + & -, helps me to keep parents informed of their childs progress
A4 Make positive calls early and often. Even when it's a neg call, make sure they know I see it as an opportunity to learn
A4 My team sends out an online resource flyer to parents with team remind, Twitter, Instagram, Edmodo accounts- has been great!
Tend to agree. I get the intention but it sounds like servitude. https://t.co/gASbnHEQIq
If a child is “earning his way out” then it sounds like a place that’s a punishment. Yes? https://t.co/1PCFWWNZ1A
Ss are pulled from 1 specials class for 10 week blocks, can earn way out
