Good Evening #pegeeks#physed tribe to tonight’s #espechat. @foe4sports & I are so excited to be guest moderators tonight. Please be sure to include #espechat with your responses. We will be following the Q & A format, please include with the A, the # of the ? you are answering.
Because there could be an entire chat devoted to heart rate monitors and various wearable, game & other technologies, for tonight’s chat we are going to focus on teacher and/or student DEVICE use (tablets, Chromebooks, iPads, laptops w/ projectors). #espechat#physed#healthed
Hello! Hello! Randy Spring, K-5 PE teacher in Woodbury, MN. Sorry, I have no idea how to jump on this GIF train, but super pumped to Tech, It, Up! #espechat
Q1: We’d like to start off with an often repeated reason some say they don’t use technology, and that is that they feel it takes away from MVPA. How would you respond to that? #espechat#physed
A1) To me, its quite the opposite. I feel as though the way I use tech maximizes activity time due to less of a need for me to give directions by using GIFs as visuals and typed directions on projector for activities #espechat
Since we have gone all in with technology implementation, our students MVPA has gone through the roof. We went from averaging around 50% MVPA in a 30 min classroom, to 75%+. Its completely changed our program for the better. #espechat
A1: It's SO important that we take advantage of all of the tools available to us to improve student learning. No, it shouldn't take away from MVPA. If done right, it will improve MVPA. #espechat
A1 it's not an either or proposition. We can use tech to increase mvpa. Also mvpa is not the most important part of teaching #physed it's one goal out of many we have. And for me it's not the top goal. #espechat
Q2: What “challenges” do you face that impacts your use of technology in your classroom? To go with that, do you have reliable WiFi access in your classroom? If not, is that something being addressed by your district? #espechat#physed
A1 tech can take some time to become routine. Take time to practice using it before class, in class the students will adapt, and in many cases it can create more opportunities for MVPA. #espechat
A1) Technology has opened up more windows in our 30 minute periods to attack our other goals. One great benefit is having extra 3-4 minutes to create quality dialogue and discussion around students' learning for the day. #espechat.
#espechat A1 By trying a flipped classroom soccer unit I actually increased MVPA from 20 minutes to 30-35 per class (per research by UofI study). Giving Ss a "6th" day of PE/week
A2: Not having tech items for the kids to use during class. I know that my ss would benefit from having these items that they could use during class to guide their exploration or use for differentiation in small groups. #espechat
I agree Sara. If students enter the classroom to a workout already in action on the screen, they can immediately begin moving. Just gained several minutes of MVPA!! #espechat
A2) Our gym has reliable WiFi. To me, it is the responsibility of the district to give ALL classrooms access to the internet, including the gym. #equity#espechat
A2: I have limited tech resources that I have access to for student use. My tech guy makes sure that I have wifi wherever I need it and when. #espechat
A2) Agree with @PhysEdApps wireless can be an issue at times. I'm pretty good at rolling with the punches when it goes out, but my teammates struggle keeping the flow if streaming slows down or stops. #espechat
A2: I have limited tech resources that I have access to for student use. My tech guy makes sure that I have wifi wherever I need it and when. #espechat
A2: seeing the kids 1x/wk and taking the time to teach them how to use the tech. It would be beneficial for instructional purposes. The only tech items we have right now is our large projector. . . #espechat
A2) Agree with @PhysEdApps wireless can be an issue at times. I'm pretty good at rolling with the punches when it goes out, but my teammates struggle keeping the flow if streaming slows down or stops. #espechat

WiFi can be a problem when we’re outside! Works well inside, although have had many problems when trying to use streambooks. Signing in, etc. #espechat
#espechat a2 I have a projector iPad laptop and awesome wifi. I use tech for my use a lot. I limit it for the SS because that is the feedback they gave me. #toomuchtech
Time - I feel like I don't have enough time to get it together.
Knowledge - of using some of the technology.
Projection - not good, hard to see, bad locatation
#espechat
I have wifi to all of my field space, I just need to tech for Ss to be able to use now. Working on a grant right now to try to help solve that! #espechat
A3) Continue to make friends with the tech person and also make sure your stakeholders know what could be done with (This) resource at your disposal. Make sure to remind them frequently. Keep showing them what you can do but remind what you want to do. #espechat

#espechat
Tech is a tool, not a requirment. No problem if the teacher decides NO TECH TODAY. Still focus on your learning objectives with, or without, tech. #espechat
A3) Agree 100%! I love disconnecting when we head outside. We really get to see a different side of our students engagement, behavior, and listening. Not to mention how good, or bad, our classroom management might be ;) #espechat
A3) For tech outside, I feel as though within the next few years WiFi will be available in a lot of outdoor public spaces. Its already happening in well populated places in the northeast provided by telecoms. Network might not be secure, but you still have access #espechat
Q4: If you, currently, use tech in your #physed/#healthed classroom, briefly describe how you use it and/or what Standards/GLOs you’ve been able to address using it. If you don’t, briefly describe what you’ve seen out there that you’d like to begin doing. #espechat
For those of you that have an indoor teaching space, I would highly recommend it. With it being my everyday, I use tech whenever I get a chance if it enhances my lesson. #espechat
Heard that Matt! Was so pumped to use our Apple TV, but the connectivity became so unreliable we had to give it up. Choosing to make up for that by buying a powerpoint remote was probably a better decision anyways. Our remote controls the flow of all our technology. It rocks!
A3 For anyone that knows me I bring my blue tooth Ion Block Rocker everywhere with me! It makes teaching outside 100 percent better! #espechat@LaVonnaRoth
I don't use YouTube too much in my classes, but if I need to and want a Plan B in case internet goes out, I do what is described in above article #espechat
I used plickers a lot last year and for some reason this year I can not get live view to work. I can still scan answers but Ss do not see the live questions. Tech can not figure out what is wrong. Frustrating as I made plagnets too!
#espechat
Utilizing tech has freed up so much extra time in our class periods to get more personal with our Ss. Acknowledging amazing effort, attitudes, manners, behaviors etc. that we as teachers see in our students and our students see in their peers. #espechat
A4) we have used tech for the majority of the 7th and 6th grade curriculum in health. Thats what BCPS instructed. It worked pretty well. Very self driven. #espechat
A4: I started with plickers & then I just moved on to self assessment magnets. That seemed to work well for the students, but I HOPE to incorporate the plickers next year! #Espechat
A4: team shake. Great app where u can make teams, team certain people up (or not). Plickers! I love. You tube to show videos in PE and Health. And of course ...Spotify! Not very techy, but all can b used everyday and very easily! #espechat
A4: Each day students enter the gym they see the instant activity that's projected. I use gifs and google slides almost daily. Use Ipads for video recording of students and myself for reflection. Plickers. Google quizzes. QR codes. #espechat

#espechat a4) also have used laptop stations for students to watch videos to determine if the video shows health or skill related components of fitness. While other students work on the respective component

A4) Use GIFs for movement analysis to hit on higher order thinking related to GLOs in S1 and S2. Use @HeartTechPlus1 system to hit on some 5th Grade GLOs in S3. Use #plagnets for student reflection for GLOs in S4 and S5 #espechat
#espechat this is so true! I think the number one thing tech has done for my school is allowed me build even better relationships with my kids. Just gives me so much more time to get around the gym and connect on an individual level with the students.

Yes especially the plagnets. I have them turn them and don't even scan them until my next class comes in and starts their instant activity. #espechat#physed
#espechat a4) also have used laptop stations for students to watch videos to determine if the video shows health or skill related components of fitness. While other students work on the respective component
A4) Projecting of GIFs, Pics and Videos of Gym/Outdoor Activity Spaces, etc. I am DIEING to try Plickers! However, we share classes every other period it seems like a massive takeover I can't do until Master's program is over. #espechat

A4 have had the great experience of using heart rate monitors with 3rd/4th grade classes. Also use tech for a lot of assessments via Plickers and google forms. #espechat

With help from a friend, @plymouthcreekpe, I started using a stopwatch to start and pause MVPA timing throughout a 30 minute class period this past October to December. It revealed a lot. I didn't document everything but those percentages are pretty legit. #espechat
Q5: What technology is your top priority on your wish list? (You don’t currently have this.) And, do you have a plan for attaining it. If so please share your plan. #espechat#physed
#espechat a0) btw I teach at a middle school so sorry for my inclusion in this chat. However my masters class requires me to do a chat and this is the only PE one I found.
A4) I really feel like I'm doing a disservice not learning more about Google Forms and QR codes, too. Judging from others on twitter, feel like it could be fantastic tech tools to integrate. #espechat
No....but that may be something I look at in the future. My students love wearing them and I can definitely see their effort improve when they have them on. #espechat
A2, WiFi Connection issues are a huge hassle in my school.. sometimes even on my own devices I will use my data as I cannot always depend on the WiFi! I do not have any regular access to a SmartBoard, Class set of IPads, etc so Limits some projects I would like to do! #espechat
I do want more data from students so I think I'm gonna make plagnets this summer 😬 also want more iPads for student use. I just need to ask our tech person if there are more. #espechat
#espechat Awesome Sean. This is the best way I found to learn and push my teaching. In the end my Ss are the winners for all that I learn from these fantastic professionals.
A5) Making my projector ceiling or back wall mounted instead of on a cart. Getting it off the floor increases our activity space. Gotta figure out how to make it happen #espechat
A5 I would LOVE ipads for my students to use. My unified arts crew and I are trying to work on a way where we can obtain ipads for OUR area and share them amongst ourselves for our ss to use during class.. #espechat
A4) I really feel like I'm doing a disservice not learning more about Google Forms and QR codes, too. Judging from others on twitter, feel like it could be fantastic tech tools to integrate. #espechat
If you are into writing grants, I can write you some proposals I have written up in the past that have been successful to fund heart rate tech for my school. Let me know if you want them #espechat
A5) Plickers, 100%. No idea how I'm going to get a team with 3 other PE T's to buy in & implement efficiently/regularly based on our team teaching structure. I guess thats what a PLN is for, right? Haha! Excited to get it rolling down the road though! #espechat
Before you purchase, check to see if they are coming out with a new one in September/October. You can get discounts on the "older" models that way. Also look into Donor's Choose as you can sometimes get matching coupons (possibly 2 devices for the price of one). #espechat
I TOTALLY agree with this! My cart is a NUISANCE .. I dream of having a remote as well so I don't have to stand at my computer to change the image, songs...etc #Espechat

For those of you on limited budgets, you can get twice as many Chromebooks as iPads. And, yes, you can do digital portfolios (Seesaw) on them, you can use video delay (Replay It) and any other video recording. Virtually no need to spend additional $ buying apps, too! #espechat
Hi Erik! I just got the new iPad pro. It is unbelievable! The speed, efficiency, and resolution is top notch. It will save you so much prep time. SO WORTH IT! @physedreview helped guide me in the buying process. So thankful! #espechat
I've read that piece before as I have been around/in the heart rate space for 10+ years now. Good read. IHT has had a history of being deceitful. I like @HeartTechPlus1 because they are truthful in the abilities and accuracy of their product and listen to feedback #espechat

Please take a look at https://t.co/3lID6hwGst. There are tons of ideas for utilizing G Suite including Google Classroom, docs, slides, sheets and Keep. #espechat

Q6: If you were going to give others who have no technology (or very limited technology) advice on what to work towards attaining first what would it be? #espechat#physed
A6 Technology is not THE answer. It is part of good pedagogy. Figure out what are you trying to accomplish with it. Then figure out how can you get it done the cheapest way possible. #espechat
Q6: If you were going to give others who have no technology (or very limited technology) advice on what to work towards attaining first what would it be? #espechat#physed
A6) It seems silly because I just got my projector and screen at the end of last year...but IDK if I could live without it now. I highly suggest looking in to getting one! So many great things you can do with one! #espechat
I use my HRMs with my 5th Gr Ss for an intro to HR unit. The purpose is investigating the question of "how do different forms/types of exercise/movement affect our bodies?" Ss make a lot of connections in this unit that are not as possible without HRMs in my opinion #espechat

If I could like a bunch of times, I would. If you can't get anything else, you can do amazing things with a projector. Also, though, if you don't have a projector but have devices, you can use the devices for small group station work in the same way as the projector. #espechat
For me personally I don't see the value compared to the cost. It doesn't directly align to my goals of creating a positive association of movement. I'm not against them just not worth the bang for buck in my opinion. #espechat

A6 I would say projector. Even though it may be one of the more expensive things, it has easily been the best thing I have brought into my classroom. Can be used for hundreds of things. Even better if projected from the ceiling. #espechat
A6 I, too, say start somewhere! Just start. I was slow moving as I began using technology in my room. The projector onto the wall was my first attempt. Still learning all it can do!#espechat
Q6: If you were going to give others who have no technology (or very limited technology) advice on what to work towards attaining first what would it be? #espechat#physed
A6) Agree with @PlymouthCreekPE getting familiar with Google can allow Ts to grow in their practice from anywhere with a wifi connection. If one gets familiar with that, growth in tech is inevitable. #espechat
To each there own. Good news is as tech advances, the price tag of the HRMs are coming down. Compared to how much this type of tech used to cost, it is certainly more affordable now. #espechat

@SchleiderJustin, @adamphowell, @GingerAaron
A6. I would suggest advocating or same tech $ as all teachers get. Physical Education is a class that can utilize technology funds to meet student needs like any subject. #ESPEChat
I don't necessarily use HRM's on kids every day...but we do check our heart rates all the time in PE and I have a couple of wands that allow for a quick check. First got heart rate wands 5-6 years ago. 1/2 #espechat

@SchleiderJustin, @Mr_C_PE, @GingerAaron
2/2 I feel they enhanced a positive culture around physical activity and movement in my classroom and I would never ever go back. Allows you to quantify effort, use as a teaching tool, a gateway for conversation, a self assessment, motivator #espechat

A6) I would also say don't compare yourself to others, especially Twitter, who are integrating Tech effortlessly. Start small, do whats best for your space, your budget, and your program. #espechat
A6 I have also learned how to project my class drawings from my iPad to the wall so “all can see!” It has really helped so much with instruction. I am not turning a white board side to side like a tennis match anymore😉 #espechat
Some of you have at least partially already answered this, but here we go:
Q7: For those using technology, how has its use changed your classroom? And, what resources are you currently using to help you integrate technology into your classroom? #espechat#physed#espechat
I currently only use HRMs about once a week. Also we have pulse bars that we use for our younger Ss. Biggest impact is the correlation Ss between heart rate and activity. #espechat
In reply to
@adamphowell, @SchleiderJustin, @Mr_C_PE
A7: Plickers/Plagnets have greatly increased assessment efficiency in a limited tech situation. Also, I'd be lost without my iPad and iDoceo. Makes life so much easier. #espechat
But, also...that's what we use heart rate for...it's all about a range. I don't care if it's exact and we aren't tracking the data. It's a quick formative assessment used for a variety of reasons #espechat

A7) Technology is an everyday, every class thing for me. Between my projector, plagnets, echo dot and new computer clicker, I feel I am more techy than most around here, but still learning everyday and every year. #espechat
A6 Do what feels comfortable for you and what works with your students and the situation you are in. Don’t be afraid to ask ask ask questions! This group is so willing to help those in need!! #espechat
Sorry late to the party. Matthew Holben from Chicago land area. A7 since getting a projector for gym, it has completely changed how, what I teach. Tech has changed the way phys ed will be taught. Teacher demo on screen me helping those struggling. #espechat
#espechat a7) we use video recording every now and then. Recently used it to have student record themselves performing a physical interpretation of Maya Angelou A Caged Bird to songs of their choice that represented the mood and tone of the poem.
My HRMs were given to my school free through a statewide program @HEALAlabama . I most likely wouldn't have purchased them or gotten them otherwise. #espechat

@SchleiderJustin, @Mr_C_PE, @adamphowell, @HEALAlabama
Yeah, I mean it's not a magic bullet! But, used purposefully, I feel my 2 are invaluable. I couldn't go a day without them. My first two lasted about 4-5 years before they wore out. I just got 2 more this year. #espechat

A7) Tech has freed up our Ts to truly monitor/evaluate student learning during a lesson. More importantly, like Craig mentioned, it has freed us up to truly connect & engage w/ our Ss. Relationships are real, therefore the trust built leads to highly positive learning. #espechat
A7. Assessment has always been a struggle for me. I want it quick, reliable, and to help my students understand where they are on their learning journey. Enter #plagnets They have been a game changer this year! @Mr_C_PE@PhysEdDepot@JoeyFeith#ESPEChat
I knew they were worth the money when the kid who doesn't "look like" they are working very hard has a heart of 200 ish....and then the kid who you know isn't working very hard sees their heart rate is at 110, and you now have an open door to have a conversation #espechat

@SchleiderJustin, @Mr_C_PE, @GingerAaron, @NJAHPERD
Yes, yes, yes! So glad you brought that up, Kelly! Please, please, if you are interested in trying something with technology I am, always, more than willing to help. I've done Google Hangouts with quite a few in this group & truly LOVE helping. #espechat
A7 Technology has helped me to become more efficient with my time and also to help keep my students better engaged. I started by projecting slides and powerpoints and gradually added things like self assessing with plickers/plagnets #espechat
Among many other things we use them for. Mostly just self checks--goal setting during fitness part of our lesson and kids can check in at any point to see if they are where they want to be...etc #espechat

@SchleiderJustin, @Mr_C_PE, @GingerAaron, @NJAHPERD
A7 I started using iPads during my tumbling and balancing stations. Ss were able to photograph and video tape each other. Really able to see what “they” look like. Eye opener for them! #espechat
A8: Well first, as others have stated, the tech should be meaningful and improve on an issue. Not just "shiny and new!" My Ss absolutely love using tech because so many classroom Ts are not. I think Ss feel more at home with it being huge at home for many. #espechat
A8 my Ss love being in charge of their learning as they use the iPads for self reflection and being able to see themselves. They are K-2 and they know very well how to use them. Doesn’t take time away from learning #espechat
I just added a post about this very topic in the Idea Tank. For those with Chromebooks, the Camera app now allows video! Awesome! https://t.co/h4Dplk8wW2#espechat
Absolutely!! Not 100% accurate but it serves the purpose.I have a colleague at another school that built a great holder for these bars, rather than spending the $ on the stands they sale. I don't have a stand...heard they weren't very durable. My kids just pick them up #espechat

Q9: There are so many great instant activities/warmups out there that can be projected for whole class use. If you use any of these, share one, or a couple, favorites. #espechat#physed
A8) For me it has greatly increased student engagement. Not that they weren’t engaged before, but with technology I feel it is more meaningful to students because they are growing up in such a technological world. #espechat
A8) Sadly, techn is so prevalent in their lives its like Ss don't skip a beat w/ its use for learning in our classroom. After a visit to @PlymouthCreekPE program a month ago, we have tried to mix in days of only words being projected vs. GIFs, vids, pics. Great changeup #espechat
