Q1: We’d like to start off with an often repeated reason some say they don’t use technology, and that is that they feel it takes away from MVPA. How would you respond to that? #espechat #physed
  • Mr_C_PE May 8 @ 8:05 PM EDT

A1) If the tech can help my students become better/more confident movers, I say go with it! #espechat
    In reply to @foes4sports
  • Mr_C_PE May 8 @ 8:06 PM EDT
A1) To me, its quite the opposite. I feel as though the way I use tech maximizes activity time due to less of a need for me to give directions by using GIFs as visuals and typed directions on projector for activities #espechat
  • NJAHPERD May 8 @ 8:06 PM EDT
#espechat a1 tech is only as good as you use it. We make tech work for us not the other way around.
  • GingerAaron May 8 @ 8:06 PM EDT
A1: In my situation #tech enhances student learning and engagement. It doesn't take away from MVPA. #espechat
  • jcmonluxpe May 8 @ 8:07 PM EDT
    #espechat
    In reply to @EPEWCP
  • MrSpringPE May 8 @ 8:07 PM EDT
Since we have gone all in with technology implementation, our students MVPA has gone through the roof. We went from averaging around 50% MVPA in a 30 min classroom, to 75%+. Its completely changed our program for the better. #espechat
  • jlobianc May 8 @ 8:07 PM EDT
    I gotta keep learning! #ESPEChat
  • PhysEdApps - Moderator May 8 @ 8:07 PM EDT
I'm supposed to teach a class like this in the fall. Would you be willing to share your course syllabus with me? #espechat
    In reply to @MrNorthcraft
  • adamphowell May 8 @ 8:07 PM EDT
A1 Good question...because they may have a valid point. But, what is our job? Facilitator of MVPA or physical education? #espechat
  • EPEWCP May 8 @ 8:07 PM EDT
A1: I only use tech if it enhances the learning of my Ss. I do not think my job as only making sure Ss move. #espechat
  • CoachFoe May 8 @ 8:07 PM EDT
#espechat A1 I try to use tech as the hook to get Ss interested in activity, movement.
  • StaciMcGowan18 May 8 @ 8:08 PM EDT
    A1: #espechat technology as a teaching TOOL . 💙
  • PhysEdApps - Moderator May 8 @ 8:08 PM EDT
How did it change the culture Randy? #inquiringMindsWantToKnow #espechat
    In reply to @MrSpringPE
  • adamphowell May 8 @ 8:08 PM EDT
A1: Side note, kind of funny we are having a tech in #physed chat tonight when it's Screen Free week at my school #espechat
  • foes4sports May 8 @ 8:08 PM EDT
A1: It's SO important that we take advantage of all of the tools available to us to improve student learning. No, it shouldn't take away from MVPA. If done right, it will improve MVPA. #espechat
  • MrNorthcraft May 8 @ 8:08 PM EDT
#espechat A1) at my school we teach 150 ss at one time. Tech can help to engage those whom don't enjoy PE to encourage movement.
  • SchleiderJustin May 8 @ 8:08 PM EDT
A1 it's not an either or proposition. We can use tech to increase mvpa. Also mvpa is not the most important part of teaching #physed it's one goal out of many we have. And for me it's not the top goal. #espechat
  • littlejoe33 May 8 @ 8:08 PM EDT
A1: it depends how u use it. A lot of technology is quick and easy to use and shouldn’t reduce MVPA. I use my iPad almost everyday!. #espechat
    In reply to @foes4sports
  • PhysEdApps - Moderator May 8 @ 8:09 PM EDT
Really? That's great... Sorry to have broken the expectation for you Adam! #espechat
    In reply to @adamphowell
  • foes4sports May 8 @ 8:09 PM EDT
A1: Also, from Jarrod Robinson in an article of his I recently read. Right on, Jarrod!! #espechat
  • CoachFoe May 8 @ 8:09 PM EDT
#espechat If we can "sell" our importance, then MVPA becomes a byproduct.
    • adamphowell May 8 @ 8:07 PM EDT
A1 Good question...because they may have a valid point. But, what is our job? Facilitator of MVPA or physical education? #espechat

    A0: Representing #EPEW2018 in CA #espechat.
  • jlobianc May 8 @ 8:09 PM EDT
A1: Agreed Staci, the technology enhances the objective - it’s not the lesson #ESPEChat
  • CoachWilliamsPE May 8 @ 8:09 PM EDT
A1 I would list quick ways to use tech and the benefits of using #espechat
    In reply to @foes4sports
  • CoachFoe May 8 @ 8:09 PM EDT
Q2: What “challenges” do you face that impacts your use of technology in your classroom? To go with that, do you have reliable WiFi access in your classroom? If not, is that something being addressed by your district? #espechat #physed
  • adamphowell May 8 @ 8:09 PM EDT
I suppose it depends on the tech being used--we shouldn't only be about MVPA anyway #espechat
    In reply to @foes4sports
  • SaraWoodPE May 8 @ 8:09 PM EDT
A1 tech can take some time to become routine. Take time to practice using it before class, in class the students will adapt, and in many cases it can create more opportunities for MVPA. #espechat
    In reply to @foes4sports
  • MrSpringPE May 8 @ 8:10 PM EDT
A1) Technology has opened up more windows in our 30 minute periods to attack our other goals. One great benefit is having extra 3-4 minutes to create quality dialogue and discussion around students' learning for the day. #espechat.
    In reply to @SchleiderJustin
  • PhysEdApps - Moderator May 8 @ 8:10 PM EDT
A2) Having enough devices is sometimes and issue. Having a reliable wifi is always an issue. #espechat Keeping devices safe is also an issue.
    In reply to @CoachFoe
  • CoachFoe May 8 @ 8:11 PM EDT
#espechat A1 By trying a flipped classroom soccer unit I actually increased MVPA from 20 minutes to 30-35 per class (per research by UofI study). Giving Ss a "6th" day of PE/week
  • MsPhysEduDP May 8 @ 8:12 PM EDT
A2: Not having tech items for the kids to use during class. I know that my ss would benefit from having these items that they could use during class to guide their exploration or use for differentiation in small groups. #espechat
  • foes4sports May 8 @ 8:12 PM EDT
I agree Sara. If students enter the classroom to a workout already in action on the screen, they can immediately begin moving. Just gained several minutes of MVPA!! #espechat
    In reply to @SaraWoodPE
  • Mr_C_PE May 8 @ 8:12 PM EDT
A2) Our gym has reliable WiFi. To me, it is the responsibility of the district to give ALL classrooms access to the internet, including the gym. #equity #espechat
  • EPEWCP May 8 @ 8:12 PM EDT
A2: I have limited tech resources that I have access to for student use. My tech guy makes sure that I have wifi wherever I need it and when. #espechat
  • adamphowell May 8 @ 8:12 PM EDT
Time and space. 30 mins is my class length. Not really a barrier--but challenge to use meaningfully #espechat
    In reply to @CoachFoe
  • NJAHPERD May 8 @ 8:12 PM EDT
#espechat a2 in the beginning new technology brings hirdles we may not anticipate it can take some valuable time to figure out. #espechat #njahperd
  • GingerAaron May 8 @ 8:12 PM EDT
A2) Challenge for my situation is having enough equipment (2 teachers but only 1 projector, would love more iPads, reliable wifi, etc) #espechat
    In reply to @CoachFoe
  • MrNorthcraft May 8 @ 8:12 PM EDT
#espechat a2) having 1-1 devices in our school issues such as where to store when you have 100 students. Or if they are charged.....
  • MrSpringPE May 8 @ 8:13 PM EDT
A2) Agree with @PhysEdApps wireless can be an issue at times. I'm pretty good at rolling with the punches when it goes out, but my teammates struggle keeping the flow if streaming slows down or stops. #espechat
  • CoachFoe May 8 @ 8:13 PM EDT
#espechat That is an important start

@dfeister Hey All, Sorry I am late! Looking forward to this chat with the Foellmer's! #espechat
  • MsPhysEduDP May 8 @ 8:13 PM EDT
A2: seeing the kids 1x/wk and taking the time to teach them how to use the tech. It would be beneficial for instructional purposes. The only tech items we have right now is our large projector. . . #espechat
  • CoachFoe May 8 @ 8:13 PM EDT
#espechat I always try to have a plan B in my hip pocket
    • MrSpringPE May 8 @ 8:13 PM EDT
A2) Agree with @PhysEdApps wireless can be an issue at times. I'm pretty good at rolling with the punches when it goes out, but my teammates struggle keeping the flow if streaming slows down or stops. #espechat
  • EPEWCP May 8 @ 8:14 PM EDT
A2: No indoor space in order to make use of tech that I would want to use. #espechat
  • MrNorthcraft May 8 @ 8:14 PM EDT
Having a non tech backup plan is a must in my opinion #espechat
    • MrSpringPE May 8 @ 8:13 PM EDT

WiFi can be a problem when we’re outside! Works well inside, although have had many problems when trying to use streambooks. Signing in, etc. #espechat
    In reply to @CoachFoe
  • adamphowell May 8 @ 8:14 PM EDT
Tough to use technology if you are teaching outside on a regular basis. Our wi-fi doesn't extend there either #espechat
    In reply to @EPEWCP
  • SchleiderJustin May 8 @ 8:14 PM EDT
#espechat a2 I have a projector iPad laptop and awesome wifi. I use tech for my use a lot. I limit it for the SS because that is the feedback they gave me. #toomuchtech
  • EPEWCP May 8 @ 8:14 PM EDT
Great lesson to learn is to become good friends with the tech guy! #espechat

#espechat A3 There is so much brain power here right now I know we can come up with a solution for outdoor access to tech for PE

Q4: If you, currently, use tech in your #physed/#healthed classroom, briefly describe how you use it and/or what Standards/GLOs you’ve been able to address using it. If you don’t, briefly describe what you’ve seen out there that you’d like to begin doing. #espechat

Heard that Matt! Was so pumped to use our Apple TV, but the connectivity became so unreliable we had to give it up. Choosing to make up for that by buying a powerpoint remote was probably a better decision anyways. Our remote controls the flow of all our technology. It rocks!

I used plickers a lot last year and for some reason this year I can not get live view to work. I can still scan answers but Ss do not see the live questions. Tech can not figure out what is wrong. Frustrating as I made plagnets too! #espechat

A6. I would suggest advocating or same tech $ as all teachers get. Physical Education is a class that can utilize technology funds to meet student needs like any subject. #ESPEChat

I don't necessarily use HRM's on kids every day...but we do check our heart rates all the time in PE and I have a couple of wands that allow for a quick check. First got heart rate wands 5-6 years ago. 1/2 #espechat

  • LovePrimaryPE May 8 @ 8:46 PM EDT
A6 I have also learned how to project my class drawings from my iPad to the wall so “all can see!” It has really helped so much with instruction. I am not turning a white board side to side like a tennis match anymore😉 #espechat

I currently only use HRMs about once a week. Also we have pulse bars that we use for our younger Ss. Biggest impact is the correlation Ss between heart rate and activity. #espechat

  • adamphowell May 8 @ 8:49 PM EDT
But, also...that's what we use heart rate for...it's all about a range. I don't care if it's exact and we aren't tracking the data. It's a quick formative assessment used for a variety of reasons #espechat

A8) Sadly, techn is so prevalent in their lives its like Ss don't skip a beat w/ its use for learning in our classroom. After a visit to @PlymouthCreekPE program a month ago, we have tried to mix in days of only words being projected vs. GIFs, vids, pics. Great changeup #espechat
