A1: Listen with intent...offer engaging, rich and authentic tasks...support collaboration.
A1) On the work they post on the walls in my room.
A1: Ss have a chance to ask their own questions and choose the best way to share their learning.
A1 when conversations about teaching and learning are allowed to happen. Learn to listen to students

how many times to do you each lunch with Ss?

Q1: How do you hear student voice in your school?
A1 I use encouraging working together and hearing what they have to say, listening means a lot
A1. Learner voice is huge in our organization. All is built on individual, school, or district need.
Good morning, . I'm a tech integrationist for a k-12 public school district in Kansas.
A1 I love to look at student's creative artwork to hear their voice- not art where everyone does the same thing Art using/not tech
A1: Providing a "menu" to demonstrate understanding in autonomous ways, as long as objective is met
Good early morning I'm Merri, and Elementary AP from KY
Good early morning I'm Merri, and Elementary AP from KY
A1) survey often with Google forms; share and discuss results with SS. incorporate peer review & empower students as peer coaches.
A1: Ask them. Anonymous surveys provide key info. Mid-year is a good time to reflect and regroup.
A1 Love 's EdCamp period - Can't think of a better way of incorporating student voice & choice!
A1:some individual time when doing projects and coaching
A1: We must make room for small groups to chat with teacher—Then we teachers need to listen.
A1: Our hallways are filled with student posters of positive quotes they want to share with classmates
How do you structure this feedback?
what age do you start blogging?
A1: Listen. Provide them with a platform. Develop relationships & trust
value, listen and adjust always. Kids know what they need!
A1: Ss voice comes through in our schedule as Ss determine much of what we offer.
A1 By offering choice, accepting S suggestions, letting S interest drive topic choice, building authentic relationships with Ss.
A1: In my role, I get to be in all classrooms every day. Simple conversations and connections create strong student voices
A1: Our Principal runs a Principal's Advisory Council, Twitter, T's who listen and support students, and more.
A1: PBL always promotes voice and choice and is great way to listen to st.s
Yes, also right on the RI line.
A1) I hold S focus group mtgs w different topics. Love hearing "school" fr S perspective. Feedback used to improve systems
A1: I make sure that is present in everything I do. I tweet out their blogs so they have a larger audience.
Good morning A1: we have a principal student advisory council. In addition, Ss know door is always open.
A1: Our supt has a student advisory to get their voice at the district level too.
A1: I held a Math Essay contest this year to hear students' thoughts about the Perfect Math Class.
Being flexible and giving them freedom to go with their ideas
A1 We give surveys school-wide + in our classroom, Ss & I partner in learning-- both bring expertise & lens to learning
A1: Looking for advice about having students act as guest bloggers on my principal’s blog. Any suggestions?
A1: Some classrooms utilize circle time, which gives a platform for
totally! voice & choice are critical for student engagement - also have their voices heard by crowds outside of school
A1:Just having conversations with them. Taking the time to listen and letting them know I am interested.
Good morning aspiring administrator looking to participate in the chat.
A1. In KY, student voice is a part of Ts evaluation for grades 3-12
A1. To assist with this, we hold a PD summit every April, where district ASIs share needs and resources. We design around that.
A1) Hear student voice thru interactive digital tools: , Google classroom "ask a question", , + class discussions
A1 be observant and approachable ... Listen and listen with open mind
A1 Use Ss choice assignments, Ss voice on topics, Ss are part of school committees
A1: Student Twitter takeover!
A1: Student voice is an area of professional growth for our school admins. Has to be more than planning parties, dances.
Assignment/research choice, group/independent work, celebrations in writing, working at own pace throughout the year.
A1 Offering Ss opportunities to share work & opinions with audience bigger than just 4 walls of classroom - Genius hour/blogging
A1: Just did a student survey as we prepare STEM lab for next year. Asked Ss what they want!
A1: student council, face to face, SS write me letters, Ss have written petitions
A1: empowering students w/ making decisions, rarely saying "No", & encouraging them to do things differently
Are there specific tools other than Edmodo that are especially powerful for S collecting / sharing S voice, ?
I allow students to be in charge of the questions in the classroom, allowing them to take charge https://t.co/9AvM06x6NI
Welcome Merri! Glad to have you with us!
They get so excited to get a comment :) Realize impact of their sharing
A1 I think of Ed Koch's "How am I doing?" allow students to assess you. Its a game changer
A:1 more students want to talk about their work than let on
A1: Student voice in the classroom occurs through conversation -goal setting, listening to what they say/want to learn.
A1: By building those relationships, authentic conversations.
I taught grade 5, but if you use its private so any age can start! https://t.co/LDTWGvzS2n
what age do you start blogging?
I agree. Choice is a gr8 way to hear student choice
A1: asking for Ss opinions & feedback. Making them part of of the instructional process - allowing them to be leaders too!
A1: Include them in committee and in planning
A1: Being there during down unpacking for school and packing up for home times allows hearing what's really happening w/kids!
A1: oh yeah, our tech team also gives out a survey to faculty to get feedback
A1.K-2 school w/o a S Council, S voice is shared within classrooms & via parents. Ss are quite candid. Ask what you want to know!
A1: Created by the amazing , our US students are working on a big project entitled, I Am Fletcher
Yes. Particularly if those aren't the types of opportunities students are really interested in!
Love that idea. We have a parent advisory and a faculty advisory. why not student!
A1: Ss also feel comfortable & confident to bring concerns/questions to Admin & Ts. They are not timid! Empower to breed confidence
Great point Greg. Building relationships is key.
Leverage tech to give the most reluctant participants a chance to be heard - all voices
A1: Engaging Sts in the planning process...ask "what ideas do you have to show mastery of this content?"
A1 Ss voice is heard via surveys, Ss council, in my classroom in choice of assignments/assessments. You can feel it in our school.
A1) by providing them choice in assignments, surveys, weekly Genius Hour, F2F
do you have any more info on how this works?
A1) individual chats are great but also love surveying student population to determine needs and check the temp!
a1 give students choice in projects that allow them to extrapolate from experiences and tell their stories - everyone has a story
do the kids love that or what!?
A1- We have a student council and they placed "suggestion boxes" around the school to acquire S voice. And we are a k-4 school! 👍🏻
A1 What are we calling student voice? Is it heard, seen or felt?
A1: How do I hear ... umm ... they talk to me? They talk to me because they know I listen and I advocate.
A1 seems to occur on a more incidental basis. It needs to be more intentional; it deserves more deliberate attention.
A1: One of the first things you have to do to hear is LISTEN for it.
Student Council is an excellant example. They are the leaders and role models.
great way to collect data Denis! Shows us what we need to work on
A1: our 4th graders are filling a bulletin board with their book recs for MCBA
A1: Most important is to be where the Ss are. To talk & listen. Sit with them at lunch. Have them in ur office/ meet outside class
A1 I am also a huge fan of to increase
A1: We hear student voice in our school by providing leadership opportunities in and out of the classroom. and student council
Good morning ! Jessica from Illinois! 7th grade ELA!
Love to get their feedback on literature choices, building projects, etc. via Google Classroom, helps me craft future instruction
Very true. Engaging in conversation after helps even more. Then acting. https://t.co/JNTW96X5p1
A1:I constantly hear S voice.asking ?s, getting feedback, observing social media and S events. It's there if you want to see/hear it
A1: If you want to hear student voice, give them opportunities to speak & freedom to express themselves in writing
A1: Stu voice through stu clubs and programs. Stu narratives will be on display through twitter and school FB
Working on this as well :)
I love google forms. It's my go to for sure.
A1: By listening to what they say and trying to implement those ideas into the classroom.
A1: Thru 1:1 chats, group discussions, surveys, & their writings. Love to know what is really on Ss minds.
A1: and choice define my program. It's all about the kids and helping them find their passions.
A1: Involving Ss in school decision making, such as hiring committees improves the student voice
no. I also send their blogs home to their Ps. Ps love reading them!
Awesome! Our high school still has traditional courses and doesn’t offer coding even though students request it :(
A3 Todaysmeet, Google Apps, Kahoot, Smore, Blogger, many more
Personalize our relationships in the building
A1 We have an active Student Council. Just finished a winter fun day where grade levels developed various service projects.
A1: As a T, allow choice with all assignments & continuously ask for feedback from Ss & adjust as needed.
Now that's creating a great school culture. https://t.co/1IZ83mBKLt
A1: Ss also feel comfortable & confident to bring concerns/questions to Admin & Ts. They are not timid! Empower to breed confidence
A1 Ss voice is promoted by culture where they advocate for themselves, for choices, for changes. Blessed to have it in our school.
You can learn a lot about student opinions by listening to what they complain to each other about.
no listen and value their feedback. Goes a long way in building relationships and trust.
A1- I've also used google forms and students have voted on certain things in our classroom. Great extension lesson: graphing!
A1: Talk to students Face to Face. 1:1. Let them know /feel they're being listened to!!
F2F, individualized connects with Ss = invaluable! Must show we care about them as people, not just as Ss! https://t.co/VI5OObYPyU
A1: Most important is to be where the Ss are. To talk & listen. Sit with them at lunch. Have them in ur office/ meet outside class
A1 Seeing all the amazing ideas here we have plenty of room to grow.
A1: My students all have their own blogs and podcast accounts and post. I frequently ask for feedback on assignments/get input.
A1: My learners are in training--to provide meaningful feedback whenever they like.Must prove that their voice matters to succeed.
A1: When I become an administrator, I will create a Principal's Council with S's who actually represent the school's demographics
How do you know the kids aren't just telling you what you want to hear? They're nice kids that don't want to hurt your feelings.
Same - choice in demonstrating mastery of skills/content. projects, etc.
A1. But the key? Giving learners voice is all about making sure that everyone else not currently "speaking" is listening.
it has taken years, but I'll never look back
A1: Student voice is welcomed when Ts encourage student-driven learning opportunities...maker spaces, Genius Hour, inquiry tasks.
Good evening! Jeannie, ES principal, southern China :)
A1: F2f convos throughout the school, hallways, playground, classrooms, cafeteria, tweets, blogs
awesome - I try to do the same - try to push even mediocre ideas further by asking question that leads to improvement
You're very kind! It's also *selfishly* a wonderful time for me!
only works if there is a receptive listener. Kids know if you're listening or just pretending. They want to see action.
A1: Make sure everyone has a voice in the room and providing that platform in your class structure
Great post Mr Banks. Representing well as always
A1: We need to find every opportunity for students to participate in creating the story they want their school to tell the world.
A1: has given pep rallies, dances etc over to Student Council. Ss do a@great@job w/these opp's.
A1: I hear S voice through forming relationships and stopping to talk to Ss when oppt allows.
A1. S surveys are given but provides input for the class/teacher. Doesn't speak to other aspects of the Ss experience in school.
gotta love sharing via SM. love the audience piece especially for parents
only issue I experience is when should students learn keyboarding. Painful to watch 1st graders try to type :-(
A2: I assumed that S.s automatically followed the rules of learning and school (i.e. hw, try classwork)
Morning David :) I may or may not have heard that before. It's okay, it never gets old
Yes! Build rapport. Make them feel safe and loved. https://t.co/4CbQaQYUcO
A1: Most important is to be where the Ss are. To talk & listen. Sit with them at lunch. Have them in ur office/ meet outside class
Good morning . Carol ELA Consultant from Long Island here.
We did this in my library! The Ss are excited.
A1:In the I am Fletcher project, students are interviewing alumni and offering personal reflections on what the school means to them
Ask students for topics that are relevant to them? Then invite posts?
nice idea. Would you give them the topic?
Here's an example: Ss build their social brands. They would love your feedback. Social Branding in https://t.co/JLsXWzJMkP
A1.) Some student feel entitled to too much voice! Must be appropriate and constructive. Give oops, but set boundaries, too.
Lunch room is a great place!
A1: A Hello as they're coming & asking about their day or weekend is a simple start to building relationships & developing comfort.
Are we back on for Wednesday?
focusing on adjusting after feedback is crucial!
Everyone starts at the beginning....
I also get to be in the cafe for 2/3 lunch waves...my second favorite part of my day...1st is greeting at arrival
A1 In my classroom students are sharing ideas daily in large and small group settings.
A1 Vibrant advisory program and student rep who meet with HS and central admins for breakfast are two forums.
A1. I've learned from experience that designing PD in isolation benefits no one.
I agree in todays world keyboarding is the new script
love the face to face interacts. It's a must.
A1: I love that students can make appointments to talk to our principal and they leave excited because he genuinely listens
Love spending time talking w/ Ss, playing games, reading with them, learn so much about Ss by play
I love giving Ss choice of how they want to show mastery of content
thanks for the mention, Mark :)
A1: Twitter, blogs, GHO, and Skype have opened the classroom walls and allows Ss to connect with experts, authors, others.
A1 have them actively engaged with u .. Some examples of Ss Ts work in a workshop I gave in https://t.co/9wttGZ6RRP
yes! sharing with peers, other faculty, admin, & even opps outside of school like at other schools/events (makerfaires)
10-12. Would love to connect or Ss!
do you have any more info to share about hiring committees? and anything else as interesting?
A1- my third graders have been blogging & I absolutely love reading their responses & their comments/suggestions to each other
A1 We have student-led Twitter chats () on various topics, ex. tech implementation; in addition, we had st-led PD for T's
A1: We have our WEB (Where Everybody Belongs) leaders meet w/ their 6th grade groups to check in regularly during year.
I agree! The more I "give up" more I love classroom where collaboratively we're learning and challenging each other
A2) As an Admin. I must "un-assume" that the students that don't volunteer info in class don't have a lot to say.
A1: I leave my door open)when in my office!)&Ss know they are welcome to drop in & talk.MANY take advantage of that. Great insights
so true, when S.s are involved parents are involved
I'm well, thanks! Drive up to Massachusetts/RI this weekend to see family.
being accessible to kids gives me so many chances to hear from them.
Q2: As a leader, what assumptions did you have to "un-assume” to empower students?
It certainly pushes back on the assumption that without our direct influence, something will go awry.
A1: Ss write reflections frequently, through Google classroom. I would like to start using the Blogging option in Google Drive.
The implications of Q1, shouldn't students be co-creators of their learning?
and then participate in their convo ... not as a judge, but as an advocate
A1: My elementary Ss also love an audience. I use Twitter, YouTube channel and classroom blog to showcase. https://t.co/GIzxgpcyZD
A1: I make sure that is present in everything I do. I tweet out their blogs so they have a larger audience.
A1 Involve them in the process of picking concert music. It's their performance!
Voices:
From the all students
Built upon meaningful relationships
And it took me way too long to learn this. :)
I love that! Great idea Craig!
A2. One cannot assume others are with you in your strategy to empower students. Get a buy-in from all stakeholders.
Good point! Students love their own creative blogging space!
Student choice is crucial. If students have a voice, they feel as if it’s their school.
have you done the principal as a student for the day?
this is the same for me. The kids NEVER disappoint and they are happier when they are involved
A2) That kids don't care about learning.
Good question- Maybe all three!
I found this helpful too with having that apart of the end of class routine using the Google Classroom stream
exactly. The parent piece is just as essential as student voice. Natural transition.
Hello friend - finally awake enough to join u all. Elissa Teacher Librarian from NJ
A1: I eat lunch with the students and talk about their day. Learn a lot by joining in
Hi, friend! Will you be at ? We must find the Amazon party w/
a#Absolutely! Ss choice shows you value them & want them to be successful in your classroom.
A1) My teachers were required to sponsor at least 1 lunch time club & every student was in a club. Great informal convos every day
Ts get catch up in prep for assessments rather than the pedagogy. . Admin listen even less.
totally agree & minds have to be OPEN to what they actually say. https://t.co/9xxeoZAVvw
A1: One of the first things you have to do to hear is LISTEN for it.
A1: Encouraging math talk allows students to really making their thinking visible...they learn from each other.
A2 That all Ss truly believe that I care & want them to succeed. Have to earn that by creating climate & culture supportive of it
In my music classroom, students have the chance to express themselves with original compositions and arrangements.
I empower Ss by allowng to make choices: pace, evidence, assgnmnts . Then offer opps 2 reflect on metacognition: forms, responses.
Failing intelligently and successfully! A 21st century skill. Mastery for teachers and students is vital.
I required each student to ask me Qs from the vids. Their Qs gave them a voice & a private audience with me the teacher
I think some of them are still weirded out by the fact that they have so many views/comments! LOL!
A2: Ss have a better understanding of their learning and social needs than we often give credit for. Need to find platform to share
A2: some think Ss are just out for the grade/rank/gpa, but "un-assuming" that led to great talks with Ss who care about learning
Yes .. Respect and expect each learners potential https://t.co/rpmUMqkRfZ
A2) As an Admin. I must "un-assume" that the students that don't volunteer info in class don't have a lot to say.
A1. You have to be a good listener. Sometimes, students don't say anything, but they tell you more by how they look.
Students sometimes feel entitled to too much voice. Give opps, but keep it constructive and set boundaries.
That’s my thought. Post topics & an open invitation for students to post their perspectives. Idea needs some structure.
love how your wrote "check the temp" as this is so true - as the semester goes on need to be aware of this
A1) a focus for Ts this year has been to help Ss make memories! Celebrate success & Empower learners! Powerful!
A2: First assumption to unassume is that Ss don’t really care about making their school better. Big false.
Just complete our 1st MS Spirit Week and Pep Rally at our school because the students needed something to cheer about - Themselves
Agreed! When Ss feel like valued members of a learning community (creators & feedback givers) = empowerment
LOL would love to go find that party but not going this year to expensive to go out to
A2 For me I was always sure that if I gave up control there would be chaos. I was wrong
A1 Student voice (1 perspective) is.. https://t.co/NebcHoKrdG .. sounds like it’s less about “I made this” & more “let’s do this”
A1: Ask "if you could change ONE thing about your school day, what would it be?" Get to the ❤️
A1: My Ss also like Tons of choice with leveled & engaging article options
So true, a simple hello goes a long way with S.s. They like to feel heard and know their voice counts.
A2: When I was in the classroom, I learned that Ss can be empowered thru less strict boundaries when using their voice.
This is awesome! What's your advice on buying great modular furniture for K-5 classrooms?
Yes! Everyone has lot of thoughts. Question is, how do we build trust to hear them? https://t.co/xlQdWidYej
A2) As an Admin. I must "un-assume" that the students that don't volunteer info in class don't have a lot to say.
A1) I didn't think about surveys or tools but more about real conversations and getting to know Ss personally.
A2: I had to unassume that I knew what was best because of my age and I was the "teacher!" SO important!
A1 To engage Ss, get out of office and go where they are. DOn’t just talk to them but LISTEN to them
A2:You have to really listen. Sometimes younger S don't have the words but they have a lot to say. Really look at what they say
A2) The un-assumption needs to be made that students don't have a voice. They do, and they're dying to get it out!!!
A2: We can't assume Ss can lead w/out help from Admins & Ts. Our Ss need prof development like Ts for leadership & what we expect
It’s so important to give them a digital space to create and share content in an authentic and meaningful way.
A1: we expand our Peer Leaders class to 50 Ss to focus on improving our community
yes! Ss need to know it's safe to talk & that we are available. https://t.co/5xElHQexhm
A1: Most important is to be where the Ss are. To talk & listen. Sit with them at lunch. Have them in ur office/ meet outside class
is more than a suggestion box, or feedback cards. It is about the paradigm shift & a culture embedded in relationships
sure, but does it have a picture of a guy in a cape?
A2: I had to un-assume that other adults believed in as a way of life in schools.
Yes! I once had 2 students in one of my interviews! https://t.co/zRHeMZrUyb
A1: Involving Ss in school decision making, such as hiring committees improves the student voice
A2:That I always know what is best for the Ss in my class. And that most of them will be driven to learn once they find their spark.
ACTING is the key word - S voice may be heard but no good if response etc isn't done
A2. Was reflecting on this yesterday. I had to become comfortable becoming more of a question-asker than "answerer".
A2 that Ss wouldn't want to tackle serious topics
A2:it is ok that they know more than you and will lead you down the right path
A1 is powerful when it emanates from within. Provide choice 2 empower Ss to make a sound choice.
A2 Unassume that it is MY classroom. The classroom belongs to Ss & 'smartest person in the room IS the room'
When they feel they can actually make a difference, they become so invested. https://t.co/m43jrw02Bh
A2: First assumption to unassume is that Ss don’t really care about making their school better. Big false.
Q2 - have to un-assume all perceptions of the Ss you are working with, no 1st impressions or rumors - get to know them 4 yourself
A1. I talk with them and listen, listen, listen 😉 https://t.co/r3zc9zLouf
Q1: How do you hear student voice in your school?
I was recording project presentations and realized I need
A2 - Leaders have to respect and value Ss voice. Ts and Ps are not the know all/end all Ss know more than some give them credit for
A2) Had to realize sometimes releasing control to empower Ss leads discovery in an unexpected direction https://t.co/av11oW5BXA
so critical to take time to make students and staff know they are valued we use hashtag
A2: Assuming to know what they would say/need/want before they say/show it
Totally agree. If they fear failure, then they won't be free to take risks.
A2 By allowing Ss to teach other Ss. Students as teachers
A2: Ss need to be heard daily. Don’t just hold monthly or several meet ups a year. Hear them daily and follow through.
That's awesome! Great idea & fantastic way to get instant feedback. You go!
A2: we also need to "un'assume" that Ts and Admin ALWAYS know best. Ss have valuable, interesting, creative ways to better school
I hear that a LOT, . Always on the lookout for new tools!
yes, but you have to take the initial leap and adjust as you go
The first thing I had to reteach myself and others is the failure is bad. It took me a long time to long it is a learning opp
Agreed. Importance is that we keep improving. Just wish I knew then what I do now. :)
I probably did not say it correctly, but I want them to use Blogger from the Google accounts.
this is awesome! kids using their talents to express themselves ... magical!
anybody in going to ASCD16 who hasn’t registered yet.?
A2: I had to unassume that st.s would learn more that me sometimes!
A2: had to unassume they knew how to get their voice heard beyond our 4 walls.
Good morning Michelle Dillard Assistant Superintendent Louisville Ky joining late it's been awhile but I have followed
YES!!!!!! https://t.co/LdzZlGWCwy
A1: How do I hear ... umm ... they talk to me? They talk to me because they know I listen and I advocate.
A2 When the leader models valuing the voice of Ss, Ts follow, Ss contribute. It is a chain reaction and it rocks!
We also use social media to promote & highlight the positive happenings at our school on a daily basis https://t.co/V3fGGgLjNQ
Thank you!! I will looking into those,
thank you so much! I love learning about them and they love sharing about themselves 😊
"their spark." Now that's crucial. https://t.co/3b3tgNcLYm
A2:That I always know what is best for the Ss in my class. And that most of them will be driven to learn once they find their spark.
A2: As a leader, I had to un-assume that every student wants the same thing.
A2: You must unassume that you are communicating clearly or enough/that the purpose is clear behind the lesson or assignment.
lol welcome! I'm not the morning person but, hate to miss !
A2: It's ok to design lrng opps that most Ss will fail the 1st time.
A2 In order to empower you have to create basic parameters but then the the students have full autonomy to work within them.
Great point! I love using backchannels to give such students the opportunity to contribute.
A2) That they aren't old enough to have a voice. (PK-1) Everyone has a voice.
Love that! That is a sign of respect and students appreciate that
A2 The saying “Don’t smile till Xmas” is so wrong. A smile is more powerful than words.
A2: had to Un-assume control. Leading/teaching Ss is not about power, but empowering!
A2: Un-assume that you can help them express themselves, just be patient, they will find the words even if struggling
A2: you must Unassume that Ss don't want to learn and that they don't have genius ideas! Also, that for some Ss, it isn't laziness
If you love join tomorrow morning at 9am ET to talk about social emotional learning.
A1: my Ts give Ss guided options and open options depending on the content. Here is an example. https://t.co/e9Xa2Xyndu
A2: That Ss knew they deserved a voice in their education; for some Ss, the ways schools are works; for others it doesn't
a2 having the tenacity to work through a new idea - think of 1st time at anything, might not work, gotta keep at it to get good
A2: had to un-assume that when S's given control, and mess up, that I had to retake control.
A2 The won't have the "right" goals in mind.
A2: we have to "un-assume" that Ss aren't growing because they don't care. How do WE motivate them to learn?
classrooms should be full of student voice. Embedding collaboration skills and communication skills very important daily
Thank you. It is fundamental change for our culture. https://t.co/dfhhs6q05e
is more than a suggestion box, or feedback cards. It is about the paradigm shift & a culture embedded in relationships
Agree!- I'm often surprised by their ideas & thoughts. Padlet, G-Classroom, Poll Ev in slides are good platforms!
A2 Ss are experts in a lot of things= value their expertise, lens, contribution = partnership in learning
Seems (relatively) easy to do in the library
A2: Important to "un-assume" that learners feel entitled to whatever their heart desires. They need to be guided to use their voice.
A2: adults struggle to yield power when they aren't sure how youth will wield power. There's an unknown that adults must tolerate
Boom!! Most of the time, the Ss have the best input!
A1 The answer becomes obvious when we ask the opposite ... What if we DON'T allow for student voice? https://t.co/Uoa5kt2fkP
A2: I have to be willing to give some of the control of the learning to students
I agree! They have more ownership when they feel that they are heard and contribute.
I want them to blog also. Post how it goes, Jim. I'm chicken yet, looking for a trailblazer to follow. https://t.co/MzeIRR3tyA
A1: Ss write reflections frequently, through Google classroom. I would like to start using the Blogging option in Google Drive.
A2: That the teacher is always right.
what blogging platform do you use?
A2: We have to stop being afraid of what kids will say when we ask them what they need. Truly listen. https://t.co/lRb5aGtXFs
A2: we are not the holders of all the knowledge. It's about learning together and facilitating learning.
I show my Ss multiple ways to create & maintain a positive digital presence. Digital tattoos vs. Digital footprints
Yes we use daily. https://t.co/1mgrcjhOz7
Great point! I love using backchannels to give such students the opportunity to contribute.
A2 un-assume that learners are not ready yet .. Give them the chance to grow and thrive
Great idea! Could do something similar with a google doc or a padlet
A2: have to be willing to release certain activities to Ss in order to give chance to succeed/fail. Be there to guide.
A culture that honors and values !!! https://t.co/igxWAaZpIF
A2: Ss need to be heard daily. Don’t just hold monthly or several meet ups a year. Hear them daily and follow through.
Agree. Don't like hearing about incoming Ss b4 school yr. I want to get to know them for myself free of others judgments
not much more. We ask students to be on almost all of our hiring committees.
A2: I had to un-assume that all adults believed that all student voices were worth hearing. And teach those adults how to do that
Yes! Including our common sense... Ss need to be heard their voice is vital & relevant. https://t.co/Vdo3gHSA2R
A1: S Voice - not only what we hear but what we see in the clsrm, cafe, hallways - use all your senses!
No doubt Beth. I like the hashtag - we can learn from our Ss as much as we do adults
Totally agree with this. We have to help them tho that it is OK to speak up. https://t.co/I5J0ibkdGU
A2: That Ss knew they deserved a voice in their education; for some Ss, the ways schools are works; for others it doesn't
A2: I had to unassume that extended silence = no learning. Uncomfortable silence can lead to growth and taking control of learning.
We fall into that at times, especially after a couple of years teaching. https://t.co/CoTnSU6BuS
A2: You must unassume that you are communicating clearly or enough/that the purpose is clear behind the lesson or assignment.
has tripled my Amazon wishlist!
Good point Bobby! They need to be taught leadership skills and given many ops to practice/make mistakes along the way
A2- we have to "un-assume" that students are "too young" and "can't handle" ______ . My Ss pleasantly surprise me regularly
Our school does this too! with the hashtag
Will do. I had the admin open the Blogger option a week ago. I have stalled trying it since. I just need to jump in.
A2: I know a T who asked the Ss "Who is Mrs ___ favorite student?" Who do you think she doesn't like so much? Very powerful
And response may not be exactly what students think they want, but they should be involved in what happens.
We have a Flipboard magazine that takes all treasured moments &videos &houses them in one place it's free https://t.co/BhjDPQw8qt
A2: we HAVE to in-assume when you give the classroom back to students it will be chaos. I believe the opposite to be true.
A2: As leaders, we have to un-assume that younger/primary aged students do not have a voice...they do and they can articulate it
! Empowerment comes to life if “Control/ego/Title” is checked at the door.
It took me a long time to learn that failure is ok way to much of my life was spent thinking it was not ok. Lets teacher Ss earlier
A2: Giving learners' voice is much like any other lesson; we cannot just throw it at most of them. They need a coach.
A2) "Un-assume" that I, as the T, know the best route to take at all times. Listen to feedback and questions that drive inst.
A2: Empowering learners does not have to be done through huge initiatives. Sometimes it's a simple word that sparks a light in them
AND we definitely need to "un-assume" they're not tech-savvy. They know so much coming in!!
A4 Obstacles are poor digital citizenship on bad sites. As 1:1 district parents worried about time spent on device & understand use
Exactly! Even elementary Ss can lead their own learning.
A2: "Un-assume" that students aren't capable of having an important, informative voice when it comes to both teaching and learning.
Our Ss love to own the learning and they thrive doing so. I see it daily. Ss voice= positive culture https://t.co/GDy53d9Mkr
A1-When I was a principal I had a principal-scholar (student) dialogue team all grades diverse meet monthly gave voice
Not only failure is a good thing but sharing a failure with Ss is a great way demonstrate perseverance
A2: We need to UN-assume students can't make the right decisions when given choice. Choice goes a long way in the right class.
Or worse, that they don't care at all.
A2: if a S has a concern they would say something - not always the case - need to ask, prod etc...
A3 S.s build narratives using tablets &
You "hear" student voice when more time is spent talking with them than assessing them
Why do people assume students will trend towards poor choices or those that don't serve the greater good? https://t.co/B0VfwJGQ5m
A2: First assumption to unassume is that Ss don’t really care about making their school better. Big false.
A relevant picture book post abt kids as agents of their own learning, giving voice to their influence https://t.co/QGQG0X1I7T
Yes! Kids have always been telling us. We have not been truly listening.
A2) Ss always seem ready to have a voice but it's different w some Ts who need proof that when they step back, Ss will thrive!
A2: That they need to learn the topics or materials they same way I did when I was in school.
quiet students need to be heard!!
I am good my friend - work is awesome. Spending my free time fighting for the libraries & teachers of the SOMSD
A2 Unassume Ss are focused on the learning -Many of my students have 'baggage' (emo, behavioral, learning) that requires attn
Love ! So S-empowering! what grades have you used this with?
Same here! Nice that they limit the characters - helps Ss share their thoughts in a concise way
so true! Need to ask why instead of assuming they are lazy
With older Ss, padket or Google doc would be good.
On the other hand, I made the mistake of assuming tech-savvy. Caused a lot of unnecessary speed bumps.
oh, that's too sweet. There's a lot of great stuff out there
These are outstanding projects, content/presentation. Love! Wish I had the tech to do this.
A2- We have to un-assume that kids are whiners; they're not whining! they're issues have validity to them and should be addressed
A2: Unassume that time spent exploring using technology was play time and not learning
A2: You must have high expectations for each and every S. Don't assume bc of age they don't get it, they do.
exactly. No more sage on the stage. If the teacher is talking to most, true learning can't take place
I think anything is possible as long as you have a plan! I'd love to chat with you about it to think of something ...
Q2 - see the big picture, it's not about one 45 min lessons, it's a life long process and we are fortunate to get to be apart of it
A2) Unassume every Ss had a great night's sleep & breakfast that morning, home life plays big role in learning
great. First you may want to ask some students to do write to build some energy
A2) Un-assume that lack of student progress is due to their own lack of investment, work or interest
A2.) Sometimes I feel like a student with no voice as I watch things unfold school-wide that I wish I could change.
A2: As leaders we have to un-assume we are the "Teacher". We have so much to learn from our Ss. My Ss "teach" me everyday.
Q3 Coming to you in one minute.
How can we expect Ss to make decisions when we don't ask Ss to make decisions?
Amen! https://t.co/0nYYrPwC9C
A2: we are not the holders of all the knowledge. It's about learning together and facilitating learning.
A1: Important to remember student voice includes symbolic, artistic, political, & written speech.
Have to provide students voice and alter our activities & instruction to connect with them not standardized tests.
A2. Un-assume that kids won't rise to a challenge
also a possibility, but that opens great talks about why, and what needs to change
Great point! https://t.co/lZX1vPmrQB
A2: "Un-assume" that students aren't capable of having an important, informative voice when it comes to both teaching and learning.
1. Conference w/ S. About their individual goals they have set
A2. UN-assume that Ts have all the answers, we don't! Empower voice, by respecting it! Show that S voice is valued & has a place.
I try to teach that failure is ok. I have so it's hard for them to get at first
padlet is next on my "things to try" lost 👍🏻
: make all spaces for all Ss to share & have As ready to ! https://t.co/g1UgpqDSdf
A2: if a S has a concern they would say something - not always the case - need to ask, prod etc...
Exactly! We need to build relationships to make that happen
Get Ss,P's & Ts together w/Admin to develop proposal & make it happen! Might need to drop another class to get the new.
I haven't yet! Excited to begin with 5th graders though! Just am beginning possible journey in Granny in the Cloud School.
A2: No more sage on the stage. If the teacher is talking to most, true learning can't take place. We need collaboration
A2 Maybe student voice begins at home. There’s school leader n family unit leader. Huge assumption is leader is here to protect..
my experience with Sped students was that they wanted autonomy too but with some help. Believe they can
And the "digital natives" still need to be taught how to use the devices properly. https://t.co/oSrhYa5rTl
Good point Bobby! They need to be taught leadership skills and given many ops to practice/make mistakes along the way
I have a snapchat account where they can send me video questions and suggestions
So, true. Some have made judgments on Ss before they have them in a class. We are all works in progress. https://t.co/x9LCaAoSDr
A2: I had to un-assume that all adults believed that all student voices were worth hearing. And teach those adults how to do that
A2: that I need to have all of the answers to potential problems/questions before moving forward with an idea.
If we want to empower students, we have to give them power. We have to trust them to lead.
. is awesome! Just used to to brainstorm on Genghis Khan & Mongols! https://t.co/t4c2FY2Wee
padlet is next on my "things to try" lost 👍🏻
Whoever is doing the most talking is doing the most learning.
A3) Allowing Ss to create/explore/ during "free" time. As well as times during sessions.
It's important to create a safe classroom environment so that students don't feel failure. Teach mistakes are a way to learn
Q3: Can you give examples of how you engage students with tech?
if possible, blog those experiences-demonstrates to Ss, shows the process not product
A2: That I had to control their time. They would waste it, not learn. I find they work harder bc they are happy.
I agree! Empower students in the classroom and that's when the MAGIC starts happening!
Yes. We can learn a lot from seeing complaints as useful info instead of something to judge or feel badly about
So true! Don't ever tell me that my students can't do something! 👍🏼
Nice Jay! When we assume, we get ourselves in trouble
: all are ; it means for Ss & Ts - learning together is powerful! https://t.co/ctG1FN1YQW
A2. UN-assume that Ts have all the answers, we don't! Empower voice, by respecting it! Show that S voice is valued & has a place.
U created that culture. Creating a safe culture gets Ss to open up and talk to u!
So true! It is not about us. It's about the kids. Empower them! https://t.co/yr1h21kcQu
! Empowerment comes to life if “Control/ego/Title” is checked at the door.
A1-always brought scholars to the table for input when it was going to affect them to get suggestions scheduling, change policy
Critical and hard for both Ts and Ss! https://t.co/GwMPr4KwF5
I try to teach that failure is ok. I have so it's hard for them to get at first
Exactly. Scaffolding is one of the most important pieces.
A2 You don't have to be a kid to teach a kid. They want to know they will be cared for & heard.
A2:I had to "un-assume" that it was all about me! Ss matter most. It's their world & I am blessed to pass thru.
agree I tell my student I am learning this program with you we may fail or it is going to be amazing, but we will learn
I've actually never heard that saying-Likely a good thing, as I'd have trouble with it anyways https://t.co/uczflVyqyL
What is your favorite “hook” to engage students?
A3: students now know that I am enamored with Twitter. They know their work/activities are getting splattered for the world to see!
In order to give students a voice, we can open that door not only at school but by using social media https://t.co/SbWVHNtLIi
A2: Un-assume that all the learning will come from me. Ss learn best from each other.
A3: Gave Ss online survey about school culture. They saw need for civility focus. So we created comtee & let them lead
During my first attempt at , I had to un-assume that all Ss know where their passions lie.
A3 Google forms for survey and shout outs.
A3 S.s created multimedia research proj w. videos, songs, paintings
A2: "Un-assume" that teacher knows best always...I learn so much from students and from listening to them...really informs practice.
A2: that all students want to learn the fun things, some want to learn what's considered boring too!
It's a simple tool, but my students love using Book Creator. It's shows their voice and is authentic.
A2: if the only convo you have with a child is about test performance than you are missing the point!
yes and they can all get to a place where they are taking the risks and we are just suggesting
A2 Like when my kids were in high school & no mobile devices (to prevent bullying).. mighta been Ss + HMW use ‘em to..
A3:Tech is ubiquitous at our 1:1 LD school. Each student has a school issued device. We are in yr 2 of our student led Techspert Bar
A3 Build infrastructure; encourage BYOD; have tech available for those without. Get comm sponsors to assist with funding.
I'd love to learn more on using Snapchat for Ss! We're on Instagram/FB/Twitter but need to follow audience.
they are equal members so equal say. Usually we choose vocal students so they voice their opinion
Absolutely!! https://t.co/bvFEB8l7Xw
A2- we have to "un-assume" that students are "too young" and "can't handle" ______ . My Ss pleasantly surprise me regularly
A3. Ss use tech daily to create & share. It is used for portfolios w/ . Ss create & use Poplet to share ideas.
A2: The Fonz knows the power of negative assumptions. Can't create connections if u can't let them go. https://t.co/YLVGc9xyau
Student-created questions create future projects ... student voice + student choice = authentic learning. https://t.co/7pSXJAUpv1
A3: Use SAMR model to help guide tech integration in teaching n learning
A2) Many Ss are so used to "doing school" it takes time for them to think independently, self-regulate, peer/self asses!
A2. In To Sell Is Human writes that ability to take on perspective=inversely proportional to amount of power we have
A2 Simple leadership mindset shift: Instead of "Go!", it needs to be "Let's go!" Share ownership of school WITH students.
Yes, it's frustrating so it drives me to do better in my own way for Ss.
A2) I had to un-assume students had to be "gimmicked" into liking school. For many it's the only place they feel SAFE & VALUED.
I use online surveys and am now trying to incorporate Google Classroom
Great point Jim. We shouldn't let that hold us up. Let's move & learn as we go. Check out today
yes... but we can assess together and we can work together to know what they need
and sometimes that means inserting yourself into conversations, opening the door for the kids to walk through.
A3) One way was the #. Allowed Ss to share classwork / book they were reading with a hashtag. Discussed the response they got.
Make it exciting for them.
A3: One thing I do is Snow Day/Holiday on line read alouds - Connecting when they aren't there https://t.co/sdFY6ewG6w
A3: One thing I do is Snow Day/Holiday on line read alouds - Connecting when they aren't there https://t.co/ofo9mAdC3B
I think 5th is a fab year to introduce to. Never had a granny tho' would love to hear of your experience!
A1 PLAY with the Ss at recess- ask them how it is going- K-5 students will tell you without a filter!
Good morning friend how are you?
Surveys, backchannel, F2F- All great ways to use tech!
true but they came around. An A means something
bingo! Teachers tens of over talk for sure
A2 student voice has to be the organic voice of the school. Can't be manufactured by adults.
Ss can do deep thematic interpretations | leverage pop culture to engage Ss (current but appropriate)
A2: you can't assume that Ss are "lazy". Some truly need help and as leaders we need to do whatever to help them!
through blogs, get them to write blogs online!
A3: In lots of schools all the time & wish I saw more. Kids have to at school. Big disconnect from reality!
Well said, Joan. I have found that most of the Ss who struggle with choices are the ones who play it well.
A3:Student Blogging Challenge, , global pbls, skype, voice &choice in pbls all ways that allow st.s to explore tech
A3: Students will be using QR codes & google forms to make cast their votes. Great way for all to be heard.
A3) Green screen creations, iPads, learning games such as Kahoot. They love Kahoot.
so true!!! Hard 2 say that "I'm wrong" but I always tell the kids I'm not perfect and thats ok!
Nice Coach! We have to help our Ss see in a broader scope
Excellent point! Teach Ss value of moving forward. Even if u fail, you are still further than someone who hasn't begun
A3:Nearpod, Schoology. For teachers we offer Tech Wednesday's, in hopes of increasing students using technology.
A3: our teachers use google classroom with students
A4: Encourage exploration. My 1st graders tweet from our classroom Twitter acct. A few Ss are also setting up their own webpage!!
this is so true! My Ss like that they know they'll specific questions will be answered. Empowers them in learning
A3.) Digitally-created projects and all writing piece final drafts are typed! Dropbox is used for all submissions.
This was a big challenge at start of year when allowing Ss to pick own practice goals instead of setting minutes.
A3:I engage Ss w/tech to shine light on positives, achievements, even ordinary hard work. Also a great way to get info out
I will surely blog about it!
A3 use e-learning simulations to have independent learning .. Watch and practice
A3 Explain Everything screencasts on iPads.
A3: Engage Ss thru providing resources for S choice, empowerment, & voice. Keeping in mind that diff Ss have diff tech interests
A3: AM robotics club, extension activities teaching Ss to code, student created projects using tech
A3 I engage Ss with tech almost daily! Google classroom, kahoot, interactive websites, demonstrate learning via numerous platforms
How do you use PERISCOPE in school?
A2:If we follow QTIP "quit taking it personally" we totally open to their views, needs, wants, & ways.
A3: Create a class/school/district hashtag. Use shared google docs and . Use blogs to flatten walls
A3: Not many times when we aren't using our 1:1 tech. Ranges from viewing/completing guided notes to connecting w/ss in world.
I love surveys and using tech for student voice but I also love just F2F and asking them questions and really listening to them
A3: There are so many tech tools-The key is to pick ones that increase student-teacher & Stu-Stu interactions
So important. And further, we don't need to be a "buddy" but an important caring adult in their lives.
Truth=busy! But, I love it! How are you?
A2 unassuming that all adults want scholars to have a voice & or do best for them but model showing how it's ok let go some
A3: Inviting Ss to interact via Twitter; asking about they're using; what do they like/want/need?
teaches them time management too. Some kids have to fail the TM before they realize they're in charge then it's amazing!
A2 I had to learn that something is wrong if I am working harder that my students are.
And watch their actions. Sometimes with the younger Ss, their actions speak louder than words
We use iMovie, Adobe Voice, Green Screen by Do Ink, Facebook, Instagram, Flipboard, Twitter and Canva along with many more
Yes I have to teach these skills at the BOY
A3 Step 1: Give them time to tinker and learn new tech. Step 2: Provide a learning objective, make teams, and let them run with it!

A3: I love engagement stories for ; T's see real-time S annotations in texts, to foster convos, draw out reserved S's
"He's a slacker" "She's a nudge" some Ts have axes to grind for particular Ss I don't want to hear it
I'm sure we hear, but do we listen? https://t.co/HzYXCb1zC7
I'm wondering how much we hear student voice, despite the forums and the focus groups. Do we listen in our classrooms?
A3) 3rd Graders interdisciplinary project digital creations, iMovie trailers, movies, , create not consume
Started year with Google Classroom. Ss didn't know how to create Doc, upload pics, even copy/paste links!
Ss have personal websites, blogs to maintain all year, co create assignments & assessment

Boom! is the key ingredient in absolutely everything that we do in education! https://t.co/lgK9rRClTo
If we want to empower students, we have to give them power. We have to trust them to lead.
My kids love to see their work Air-Played through our Apple TV's!
I agree, when students choose they become invested in what they are doing
so true! I get very frustrated when folks underestimate the abilities of our primary students. They're very capable!
Yeah, I don't think students are lazy, once you find something they are passionate about. https://t.co/noCo6bh7nb
A2: you can't assume that Ss are "lazy". Some truly need help and as leaders we need to do whatever to help them!
Blogs and ePortfolios are great ways for students to have voice and self-reflect on learning. https://t.co/wGcQVKtPCK
So important 2 create relevant learning experiences with meaning & context so Ss choose the path 4 them https://t.co/3r1NEMFrhk
A2) Many Ss are so used to "doing school" it takes time for them to think independently, self-regulate, peer/self asses!
My assumption was that as a Google dist they'd experienced those things. Didn't know how to use tech as tool yet.
A3: Recording tech, posted where my students can listen and reflect on what the ensemble sounds like. They can hear what I hear!
just started with the blog feature. Cant wait to connect with others. Love the audience piece.

Such an important point! Build the skills of your teachers so they are attentive to student voice. https://t.co/OEfFQiQ7Cs
A2: I had to un-assume that all adults believed that all student voices were worth hearing. And teach those adults how to do that
Yes, I have struggled with this as well https://t.co/HkkXuMFpF1
A2 I had to learn that something is wrong if I am working harder that my students are.
Learn that is now the guide on the side as opposed to the sage on the stage. A2

Social media is also a way to develop learning in and out of the classroom
A3: I have had Ss email/text home w/ required information about class (images/the happenings) Using technology to engage families.

A2 Unassume that admin and Ts always know best- 3rd & 4th gr Ss taught me about coding yesterday and planned and recruited 4 a club
A1: just thought of this; clubs are a great ex if Student Voice. If they want it,we try to facilitate it!
I like Google Classroom a lot. I don't have enough tech & key assets are blocked, so I post resouces for at home
A3: Using a variety of tech e.g., and as tools for student engagement.
YES, Jacob. Yes and more yes. We must listen and make chances accordingly. Ss feedback is real
A3: Ss were given Tic-Tac-Toe choice board w/ tech apps to explore 2016 election.
A3: When teachers&leaders explore tech, students see positive role modes and follow! They see what we DO, not what we say.
A3 technology isn't what engages my kids, learning does, tech is just one of the tools that allow them to express that learning
A3. Snow day challenges. Ss engage in activities and share pictures of their successes
We use here in scotland and it works amazingly! Kids love it

Sylvia you are bringing it this am! https://t.co/ZEQLm6GYyR
A3- we use everyday and I love to add in other tech platforms at least 3 times a week. Changes things up a bit for us 😊
Very excited about the great conversations today on about student voice. It matters.
Most schools ban cell phones
What if it we used this parent endorsed and funded tool to improve Ss learning?
reach | engage
A3 Tech is important but letting them use tech in way to express themselves is more powerful. No digital worksheets.
Great point! Empower Ss to take control of their learning!
A3:Wow very fortunate to have 1:1 iPads endless choice to all differentiated learning &a engagement-, QR codes, Air Play.
Awesome! Our district is a few years away from 1:1, but we are making progress.
And it’s easy to use especially if you’re a school Becomes a go-to place for Ss!
Google Expedition Brings The World Into The Classroom - Work in Progress - Education Week Teacher https://t.co/qKIBWPCmbK
a3 important to note design of the tool & interactions is imp for learning obj - not all tools equal eg youtube vs edpuzzle
The blog piece is great for connecting w/ others! It allows for communication not dependent on time zones
real world activities from in '90s set the stage for
A3: lately, been using desmos to have kids discover certain properties. It engages them instead of just telling them.
A3: We engage in weekly, daily Twitter chats. Ss have math buddies using GHO to learn math skills with.
I would say that you empower them to that, tech just enhances their reach
So true! can help us with "the how" and we can help one another with determining "the why". https://t.co/3aYMEJCLgt
A3 I feel we don't take advantage of the "techspertise" of our students enough. Put to work helping.
agreed! Working with my Ts on what it looks like to have your Ss work harder than you.
A3:QR codes to present work, padlet for posting text evidence, class blog to present work, Twitter to engage and present happenings
Had convo where kids said, "You give us flexibility & stuff," but others say "Do it my way!" They know/expect
Totally agree with you It is made collaboration and communication so much easier https://t.co/bIDdiXcLDm
Google drive is a game changer for schools for sure!
A3: Here is an excellent tool to create QR treasure hunts. Use a test in the library or create your own. https://t.co/nqFvsbE7zP
A3 Ss this year have really engaged each other with they're able to ask ?s/share resources with each other even without me
A3: I usually will just ask Ss to research a stat to share with the class to fuel a discussion we are having.
A3: work in progress but so far ,
We've created our own monsters obsessed w/ the almight A instead of process and quality experiences. https://t.co/WdgiOcibqM
oh yes! I've observed similar situations where Ss are looking for the a-z guide to an A, ignoring the freedom of exploration!
Cool! Tell me more about it!
A2-we have to stop assuming and teach model for scholars have voice no excuses just results they deserve to be heard
For some educators, school still seems to be about winning and losing and making kids comply. can't fit into that.
A2. Student leaders want to do more than improve more than their school's culture, they want to help change the world.
What a great idea. I'm thinking I could take pics, put them on docs, & Ss caption them to write our letter https://t.co/kHn1RpYuCm
A3: I have started using Ss in my newletter video portion - The kids love to see themselves and their friends - Then parents read
A4 some S.s do not like using tech for school
A3: They use to share learning with Ps and others.
A3 whether no, low, or high tech the processes has to come back to students to reflect and reinforce learning and the community
yup and it also creates a dialogue with kids instead of working alone from anywhere
Teachers should "un-assume" that student misbehavior is a personal attack on them and try to understand it instead.
And it’s easy to use especially if you’re a school Becomes a go-to place for Ss!
And it’s easy to use especially if you’re a school Becomes a go-to place for Ss!
A3: LOVE how is getting S's authoring rap videos about current events + more. Mad-engaging!
Hey Lori V. https://t.co/WoLvjrvzMn
teaches them time management too. Some kids have to fail the TM before they realize they're in charge then it's amazing!
a3 My Ss are creating a virtual museum display w/ trifolds & studio - augmented reality
A3: My Ss become "movie stars" when I record their reader's theater skits. Then we watch it on the big screen (promethean board 😉)
A3: Having Ss blog about books they're reading.
Exactly. I don't have 1:1 other classes in school do, Ss demand to be taught w tech. So, I hack that way
A3: My students are exploring with coding using apps and lessons from .
A3: Anyone running Twitter chats w/ their students?
love that! https://t.co/4BdR1esuwq
Had convo where kids said, "You give us flexibility & stuff," but others say "Do it my way!" They know/expect
A5 When students feel empowered, they feel respected & heard, leading to positive behavior 2 improved climate
Awesome Shawn! Tell me more about it!
Google classroom is a great tool to check out as well!
True, but I have to admit sometimes I feel quite lazy! So I empathize when others do.
Q4: What obstacles do you encounter in engaging students with tech?
I prefer to have chrome carts in every room instead of 1:1 to remove certain issues that arise
kids need to be taught how to use cell phones for learning
A3: and Live are my students' two favorite classroom tools.
A3: LOVE how is getting S's authoring rhymes / creating rap videos about current events + more. MAD-engaging!
I feel fired up and excited!!! YOU are engaging me! 😊👍🏻 https://t.co/GXgCs9Zw63
Sylvia you are bringing it this am! https://t.co/ZEQLm6GYyR
A3- we use everyday and I love to add in other tech platforms at least 3 times a week. Changes things up a bit for us 😊
Twitter has taken off this year in school, too. T's are becoming Connected Edu's & incorporating SM into lesson design.
A4) Background knowledge and access are obstacles I encounter in engaging Ss w/ Tech.
A4: Tech has always felt like a tool to me. One that doesn't require me to engage kids with so much as get out of their ways
Yes it has - It has truly allowed for 24/7 collaboration and learning. https://t.co/wbRTbSaIY0
yup and it also creates a dialogue with kids instead of working alone from anywhere
I was thinking the same thing! https://t.co/Va2YFeyGVq
A3: Tech is becoming just another resource among many...greater integration...Wonder if we'll be asking this same Q in 5 years???
This is exciting news, Debby! Wonderful that they are developing such a powerful voice at an early age!
A3 it is important that Ss have a learning menu, ways to self-monitor, ways to reflect, & opportunity for some face time w T
A3. We encourage learners to use backchannel tools to share thoughts, and collect feedback using low/high tech methods.
A4: Ss see/access the newest most interesting tech on daily basis. Our obstacle is engaging them in a current exciting way
A3 We use https://t.co/JKzCj0aLX5 for creative writing. My 2nd graders wrote 75,000 words so far and it's free during March!
I make sure to ALWAYS follow through when I say I will do/learn something for a S. Proves I listened & value his/her voice.
Much further along now than we were. Still occasional hiccups, but no more "Cant we just do this on paper?"
It improves the quality of their work as well.
A3: Ss love it when you "@" then in a Twitter post showcasing their hard work. If you don't know their handle, just ask & post!
A4: it's just the age of the students that's might obstacle. 6-7 year olds have quite a few questions, so timing is an issue....
A3: I use tech frequently (when it makes sense) in my 1:1 classroom. No set tool I rely on.
I believe so John! Someone just tweeted they were
A4) In my current position, not everyone has tech, and all the different tech they bring in to the classroom.
A3: I AM a digital and global citizen. I AM a risk taker and reflective learner. My st.s & I make mistakes&learn together!
variety is important so Ss don't experience "tech fatigue". Happens in places where Ts rely on same tool over and over
has done it with some success
Insufficient bandwidth is still an issue. Many decision-makers underestimate its value. This can cripple learning with
A3. As an admin, I'm a part of classroom Edmondo groups. It's a place for reflection, fun & community! https://t.co/FpH12KuV0g
Can't be one trick ponies. Have to give Ss opportunities to explore different ways to demonstrate learning. High tech & low tech.
this is best tool around for AR - I will be posting pics Fri - presenting to parents & guests then
A3. We also want learning session attendees to us Twitter, Vine, Instagram, Periscope, etc. to share their learning.
A4: Altering plans, assignments or due dates for Ss that do not have internet access at home.
By the way, I'm extremely jealous of everyone at . It's like an All-Star game collection of all my greatest PLN influences.
A3b Sad to say but there is limited to projector & w/e Ss bring w/them (and a Blackberry). Mostly we don't use it.
A4: Sometimes having Ps who don't understand the +'s, or need to build T agency
A3: Used for narrative writing and teaching sequencing and dialogue.
A3) Tech is definitely a gateway but communication, collaboration, interaction, creation, design, etc = important. Ss want balance
A3 Google drive to widen audience for 5th grade writing- once I left comments, I was flooded w writing waiting/wanting to be read
Love it Stephanie. Is that its own class or is it incorporated into a class?
inquiry leads to exploration & discovery-Ss need choices to find their voices.
Yes I do and have. We also backchannel during class with a class hashtag
The Importance of Reflection: Why I Apply to Conferences and Institutes https://t.co/1EFmSNYZRV Everyone needs to reflect.
A4 sometimes tech can bore or annoy students, ironically
Not twitter, but for backchannel chats. Pretty similar to twitter
A3) What are the best video-recording apps?
It's a big thing. Ego is the central issue. I always need to make sure my lessons aren't all about me. Flexibility.
A4 Infrastructure - affordability of devices; provided or not.Harness key community sponsors to assist with tech goals.
Tech can only change student learning when teachers embrace the change and change their teaching.
A3| Completing tasks thru tech differs from engaging Ss w/ tech.Lately Ss engage w tech tools for concept maps, comix, music write.
Indeed. Sharing their thinking globally or within our district is so exciting and meaningful for Ss.
I have an iPad we use for that purpose. https://t.co/PK1MGolyKr
A3: I usually will just ask Ss to research a stat to share with the class to fuel a discussion we are having.
What's the deal with ? Doesn't Kayako have enough communities? Who ARE these people?
don't fall into the trap of as a SIP,BIP,DIP buzz word. must actually scale capacity
A3. Collaboration using tools like Google Drive happens regularly. Also reducing paper usage simply by sharing via tech.
ePortfolios help me reflect as well on things I want to change or try.
A4 Just because Ss are digital natives doesn’t mean they understand tech. We must teach them acceptable skills and usage.
Absolutely! We should be doing work before class, but the Ss should be doing the work in class. https://t.co/8ORRfGTJjJ
A2 I had to learn that something is wrong if I am working harder that my students are.
What do you think is the real root cause of such a "ban"?
Sway is new to me- I'll have to check that out! ;)
Q4 - FIREWALL!!! Can't update iPads to download Google Sheets for monthly budget simulation in Econ
A4: "distractability" a and too much screen time
A4: Tech sometimes doesn't work, but that really teaches us to look beyond. It can be frustrating but I think Ss learn perseverance
I'm amazed at what my kids are doing w/
. is awesome online editing tool for creating digital pubs. SS get unique login & collaborate on single pub.
A3: QR codes are big with our littles ones. They know when and how to use them. They are also now creating them on their own
A4: Just simple things, to me anyway, like googling something w/ a chromebook in front of them instead of asking a teacher.
Have to sign off. Lots of greet ideas. Thanks for sharing. Have a great week!
A4 Sometimes face to face conversations are better to avoid misunderstandings with Ss rather that communicating through tech.
A4 We struggle with balancing teaching tech skills and content knowledge.
A4 ensuring rigor, deep thinking, & reflection - T must plan well for that
A4) My fear of risks when using tools such as Twitter. I need to be sure they understand digital citizenship.
bycreating authentic activities for students to become critical thinkers. I believe this can transfer to any assessment.
A3j by making think they are playing a game and making it hard fun! Put ss in position yo learn by making!!!
A4: On S level, engagement can be limitless but obstacles include the rules by which schools abide when comes to tech & budgets
ego is a big thing, I guess. Never thought of that, but you're right
screencasting? for what platform?
A3 has many ways to engage students in my classroom, this past week they added sound effects to videos
love prezi! So cool to see what Ss create with it!
A4: Being 1:1, games/SM add a layer of management on the Ts part. Establishing expectations is key & walking around/engaging w/ Ss.
Yeh, that's not good. Let's get on that on Monday. Put a ticket in
I think it is awesome that you connect with your staff & Ss in this way.
Q4: Devices not charged, no web access at home are two I encounter frequently.
A4: accessibility is always an issue. Not all Ss have = Access, or are on same platforms as you.
Not if it's invisible. I give the mission, they choose the tech.
Wow--this thought just led me through the day. Very cool https://t.co/88Xiz28fi8
A2) I had to un-assume students had to be "gimmicked" into liking school. For many it's the only place they feel SAFE & VALUED.
A4: Obstacles - not enough machines - I need to have a device for every student
Are there any companies killing it, ? (We want them in our new K-12 marketplace!!)
A4: Obstacles are typically misunderstandings of use in education; is simply the tool - we learn thru
A4. For some adult learners, it is about wanting to invest in new methods, particularly if current methods work great.
not yet, but students have tweeted using my account to tell parents what we've been up to!
Perhaps. I only give a gentle push toward greatness. 😉
A3: Just ths wk: Ss crtd Screencast recrdngs w/ QuickTime, drawngs w/ , slide decks w/ , & quizzes.
give a nudge
challenge norms, modify practice, meaningful growth, exciting, opportunity
A4.) We assume that all students have access at home. Open up your room early / at lunch / stay late for unconnected Ss.
A4 Challenges = Equity & access, bandwidth, shifting mindsets to embrace tech especially on admin side.
A3 every day we use YouTube and drive we also use nearpod, Tourbuilder w/ Google appear.in and often
A3c There's not a lot of create in grown-up learning. It's mostly sit/get + remember. It's in designing experience tech gets used..
Great point Henry - we need to find ways to create a healthy balance. No this year?
works great! No need to install or need account.
I'm not great at it but the Ss love it. Easier than most presentation programs https://t.co/G3HGH60hTy
Sway is new to me- I'll have to check that out! ;)
A4: we also struggle with ensuring students write on paper enough to develop and improve that skill as well
A4: Main obstacle is Ss struggle with self-management skills in utilizing tech. My responsibility to teach & model this!
One obstacle I face is that I forget at times that even though they are Digital natives they don't always know the simple things
I let them "sneak their phones out" for that. They are not suppose to have them in class. 1/2
A2-if we give them voice we will learn more than we thought we knew that might better help collaborate with instruction
A4 Obstacles: Money, Ts don’t know how to use/implement, lack of internet at home,
digital citizen is clutch. Must be ongoing and constant. Not just a series of lessons parents need to be informed to
A radio interview The Test: Why Our Schls R Obsessed w/ Standardized Testing – But... (w/ Anya Kamenetz) https://t.co/KTecIqf1tM
Happy 20th Birthday ! Check out the fun w tech: e-Books, Siri, + A3
It's incorporated in class.
A4: We call it...wait for it..."The Circle of Death!" The swirling circle of the un-connectivity.
A4: Obstacles - district thinking that does not employ new and engaging digital content for us to use
A4: Biggest tech obstacle is adults getting over their fear of messing it up and adult fear of students abusing the 'privilege'
A4. Obstacles making sure time exploring is meaningful to Ss. Some Ss struggle to persevere. Equity in access within school.
A3:Ss blog, participate in virtual field trips, coded (my 1st), interactive Venn diagrams, & more
A4) just had this convo w Ss focus group yesterday! Kids want balance of tech, communication, feedback, collaboration and hands-on
A4 Also the amount of planning time by my Ts increased tremendously because Ts are leveraging tech to personalize
The difference between using SM for entertainment purposes and computer applications for deep learning. https://t.co/0nRT343uW0
A4 Just because Ss are digital natives doesn’t mean they understand tech. We must teach them acceptable skills and usage.
A4. I work with many leaders who are excellent re: relationships F2F. Some wonder, why explore relationship building virtually?
But love seeing their faces when I ask them to use the phone to research something quickly. 2/2
Autonomy's an essential ingredient to community success! School's a great place to learn life skills.
A4: The digital divide outside of school and differing comfort levels with tech in school is a barrier to utilizing
And promise to walk with them after the nudge! https://t.co/5CUEvL789t
give a nudge
challenge norms, modify practice, meaningful growth, exciting, opportunity
Offer weeklong challenges to students w/ my class blog/social media instead of homework-engaging! https://t.co/jFLyihobkk
A4: Getting less-tech savvy people on board, i.e. parents, colleagues
and Teachers learn perseverance too A4
Sometimes I assume all Sts are tech savvy and want to use tech....not the case. Must allow flexibility for those Sts too.
A4 - when the tech doesn't work and the lesson is thrown out the window
I'm going to get very Eastern philosophy on you, I fear. Teachers suffer from all about me problems, lol. Om! Let go!
a4 i never engage kids with tech it's about engaging them in the learning
a4: Having enough! If you can go to McDonald's and get wi-fi, you should be able to get it at your school!
A4: Time: the number one obstacle when introducing tech bc learners of varying abilities do not grasp the skills at the same rate.
Isn't that what happens a lot? LOL We're clumsy w tech tool but kids click and learn rapidly! :)
you make it acceptable in an area where at times it was not, many use tech but don't empower
recording readings and newsletters for viewing...
A4: 1:1 device school yet Srs are truly the only 1's who don't bring iPads 2 class, have cell phone but don't want 2 use minutes
I think we forget to teach them how to write an email or attach a document or other little things
A4. Ensuring differentiated & meaningful use. Ss use tech different @ home vs in school. Tool vs Toy
Thank you for great ideas . Sorry to cut out early.
Q4 On recent survey, 80% of our Ts say Ss are distracted by tech. But only 20% of Ss report they are distracted by tech. :)
Thanks for a great start to my weekend. Time to be a dad... kids are wanting breakfast
It has been tooooo long since I've participated in but I have some time this morning and am jumoing in.
A4:with Ss on multiple social media platforms, you risk your message becoming "white noise" if you flood the net on all platforms
A3. My art Sts use tech to research, create, publish to their digital portfolio on , and some design apps.
And that's truly the only way to build rapport and trusting relationships! 😊
A4: not many. They don't need PD on it.
Key concept. It's not about us. https://t.co/uopKA99Gl6
It's a big thing. Ego is the central issue. I always need to make sure my lessons aren't all about me. Flexibility.
A4 I teach in tech-free classroom (inpatient drug & alcohol rehab) and wonder what I could do with all these resources!
A4: Obstacles - we need much better models of PD for teachers and students so they can learn about new tools
One area my D falls short. Still hoping to work this idea out. https://t.co/qyacDkCClS
A4.) We assume that all students have access at home. Open up your room early / at lunch / stay late for unconnected Ss.
A4. It does make me wonder, what is most important? Depth of relationship building, or breadth of tool usage?
Such an important point. They're expert at so many things, but are sometimes missing basic building blocks.
True, and it challenges teachers and learners to adapt.
A4) Ss LOVE tech but also love feedback! They yearn for more face-to-face contact w T and other Ss involved in the learning
You never use tech as a tool to engage them in learning?
A4: Challenge? What does enforcing rules for appropriate use of tech without building a culture where tech is a treat look like?
Too sad. Compliance doesn't equal learning.
"Everything is either an opportunity to grow or an obstacle to keep you from growing. You get to choose." - W. Dyer
Yes! Try to encourage others to view learning as a design science - design, test, get feedback, reflect, improve
A4: obstacle: my imagination. I invest in connecting w/others so I don't limit my Ss lrng by that which I haven't yet learned.
My Ss love reader's theater. And recording it only makes it better. https://t.co/e3vXiBa6GO
A3: My Ss become "movie stars" when I record their reader's theater skits. Then we watch it on the big screen (promethean board 😉)
I tried this wTwitter & defunct Twiducate:also Plickers, but district firewalls discourage it. Tips?
isn't that our obstacle as educators though? To get all on same page?
A4 keeping everything updated, so it runs smoothly! Leader buy in on sharing ideas n social media, firewalls!!!!
A4: Sound issues and connections not always reliable. Ss problem solve and used whiteboards to write responses and show on GHO.
Had the most at recent Twitter 101 in for in-service; support them as they grow!
A4: Tech should be tied to authentic learning opportunities. If Ss do not see the worth of the tech practice, they won't invest.
A4: as others have said, background knowledge, and Ts comfort level w/ tech
Q4: Ss are already creating digital media on a daily basis. To get them more engage we should let them choose the app
A4: Opportunities - make sure every child has a machine hooked up to the internet at school and at home
Getting BOEs and Administrators, Parents and others to buy into how tech when does right is amazing is huge
A4: I haven't felt as though I have adequate time to put meaningful daily tech practices in place
A4 Most clinician PD I've seen/designed is accredited, has to look a certain way, at least that's perception. Can't be too diff..
A4: Also not having tech resource personnel to help with implementation.
Low tech and awesome! Would be neat to count 'em up and turn into a pie chart via tech.
IMO, relationship building. Don't let the tool guide the learning, let the learning guide what tools you use
are met? I openly share work. Being transparent is huge. Invite them in to see creativity to hit objectives in action
A4:something always goes wrong I have come to expect it and not get mad
agree but all admin up 2DC should read Drive by T's given little autonomy and, no improvement
Totally agree. Digital Equity. has a great guide regarding this.
A4: Obstacles: not enough tech devices and not enough time.
So very true. I encourage kids to find their voices through the best track for them. We can't hold them back.
A4 Ts and admin knowing how to use tech to enhance/enrich learning & making it a rich experience
Thanks for data, David. A4
tech is just a tool - engagement really comes from building relationships imo - kids want to know & learn
A4: PD. A tech integrator to support Ts learning.
A4: Obstacles -teachers who do not have good learning management tools - Google Classroom, Hapara etc
A4, Ss personal use of tech. Need to repurpose for use as . Not a problem but an opportunity
A4) Some Ss choose to drift to other digital activities (addictive games) so keeping new tech in front of Ss is important
A4: Tech being used in one division and then st.s go up to the next and it's a completely different school.
A4 obstacle - T understanding that blending can be messy and scary - Admin giving support w/o penalty
A4: Another obstacle: Finding out about a tech tool specific trick you should've shared ahead of time, but didn't know existed.
So TRUE! Great point. https://t.co/LkXNqrJtBR
Insufficient bandwidth is still an issue. Many decision-makers underestimate its value. This can cripple learning with
Just because we give all teachers and students a computer does not mean we are a tech district.
Yes, absolutely true! Still developing my own passion as an adult!
Thanks Sandy! Hope you are well, my friend
Change
From: threatening norms, overwhelming
To: modify practice, meaningful, exciting, opportunity, growth, synergy
A5 S.s actually want to learn and contribute. They walk a little taller down the hall &show displayed work https://t.co/JXHsnXleXA
A4) with my 3rd graders digital/online safety, we discuss valid sites & resources, most inappropriate are blocked, still nervous
A4) I have to challenge myself to continue to incorporate digital citizenship into the curriculum -- don't assume SS know it.
A4: Focusing on the tech and not the teaching and learning is an obstacle. Tech enhances instruction- not tech for tech's sake.
Follow-up:Is there anything wrong or problematic w/ not wanting to connect virtually if great connecting F2F?
A4: Would love to include more virtual reality. Used VR fieldtrips and Ss loved it!
A2-empowered them to be leaders & speak about our school when I was principal, had to build confidence bring out leadership skills
not enough tech in schools is a nightmare! More funding is always needed for something
Embedded in that PD must be time to explore & play. Too often it's "show and tell."
It really comes down to how we use the technology in the classroom, fancy tools means nothing if not used correctly
a4 - kids use tech every single day - can't take the approach of using tech to engage
Of course it's a tool. A tool that lets me use time in my classroom far more efficiently than when I had a only a board.
A4 my challenge is knowing that I can't force others into my view of tech, only show them what is possible & help them achieve it
A4- if expectations are not discussed and set high, you could be facing many obstacles
A5) Empowering Student Voice breeds buy-in and a better learning environment for all.
A5: Gave Ss online survey about school culture. They saw need for civility focus. So we created comtee & let them lead
Very true! Students who know the most struggle with the "little" things.
Q5: How does student empowerment lead to school improvement?
A4. I do not encounter many obstacles in our bldg. A few Ts need to embrace growth mindset. But, overall, Ss voice is prevalent.
A4 Even with the I participate in it's mostly conversation or huddles. I'd say it's a perceived need for quiet.
A4: Google Classroom serves as a great management system to grade differentiated assignments using . Ss can upload to platform
Kids are born with the desire to learn,it is our way of teaching that has squashed their desire,Empower them in their own learning
A4 you can be at a 1 to 1 but ehat are you doing w the devices? Replacing the typewriter? ??
yes, but everyone understand the how for paper and pencil. :)
Even though we use tech the focus should be on the pedagogy not the tech. talked at this at .
A tension of that needs some unpacking, IMO - what if what they want is racist? Or unhealthy? https://t.co/S1Lck9LNwP
So very true! It's what is done with the tech/resources, that is a true indicator!
We need to begin with the End in Mind. Too many educators begin with the app, device, or activity. https://t.co/7hVkzoOuI5
A4 Biggest obstacle to using to engage students is infrastructure- no wifi, limited computers require creative work-arounds
true, it's how learning is facilitated with the tech and received by S.s
. Yes! Because we know they aren't used to sneaking them out in class. *wink*.I let them photo board notes.😉 https://t.co/J2pzwnVIop
But love seeing their faces when I ask them to use the phone to research something quickly. 2/2
A4: Much of tech in classroom stays there after course concludes. Must give Ss ability to take their tech creations/data w/ them.
A4) Also, I create a classroom tech team who helps Ss who have problems getting to digital sites or who have other obstacles.
I'm getting ready to try that with my 1st graders. Thought I would create QR code & put in the hall. https://t.co/thITXshpMI
A3: Having Ss blog about books they're reading.
Love the digital portfolio concept! https://t.co/YCurVBSb0d
A3. My art Sts use tech to research, create, publish to their digital portfolio on , and some design apps.
aw, that's very kind of you. I hope you're on the mend soon! I'm learning the art of patience this year for sure.
A4: Sometimes antiquated tech tools can be a barrier...on top of a lack of more current tech tools.
Ts are often vetting tech while using it. new "challesnges" always pop up
https://t.co/FazYM1IQsl
A4: Another obstacle: Finding out about a tech tool specific trick you should've shared ahead of time, but didn't know existed.
so true!!! Gotta just go with the flow 😀
A4: Wifi access is a big problem now though should be better next year. Many Ss have their own devices, but lacking connectivity.
So true! Which is why I write project descriptions on a GoogleDoc, so we can edit/improve mid-work https://t.co/OC1oc5Wkp8
A4: Another obstacle: Finding out about a tech tool specific trick you should've shared ahead of time, but didn't know existed.
Explain how it helps grade differentiated assignments. I'm intrigued
Ain't that the truth! Patience is a virtue!
Biggest obstacle w/ tech in 1:2:1 program is filtering Ss from gaming & virtual note passing. Haven't figured out how 2 engage Ss.
I agree. has a fantastic post awhile back entitled: When Teachers Compete, No One Wins.
In many of our schools, kids come with families to schoolyards on weekends to use our wifi with their devices.
YES for choice that leads to student empowerment.
A4. The obstacles my students encounter are caused by our Internet filter used to keep them safe. It blocks the bad & lots of good.
A5: Ss who are empowered are far more engaged in learning and seek to improve themselves and their school.
A5: Logically, the more invested Ss are in the process, the more they care about where they are. Discipline decreases.
How do you interpret the difference between the Ts & Ss observations? https://t.co/c1gtPDA7en
Q4 On recent survey, 80% of our Ts say Ss are distracted by tech. But only 20% of Ss report they are distracted by tech. :)
A5: Ss then started wellness initiative, focus on caring, support...ending in annual Wellness Walk thru town & Fair day in spring
What is ? Caught my attention as it was trending.
Research based strategies for student success. Self-and peer-assessment...
So many ideas from https://t.co/kRxTgRbAMT
I have the same discussion with my 3rd graders. https://t.co/jQ4D5WMKEf
A4) with my 3rd graders digital/online safety, we discuss valid sites & resources, most inappropriate are blocked, still nervous
A4 Full engagement, ensuring all activities are meaningful.
A5: S empowerment means that Ss know their voice is heard. This is can make Ss "all in" for the school and for learning
I would agree. Then we need to ask why we consider connecting virtually a must. Isn't simply connecting, important?
or use tech in our PLC or PDs
absolutely. I can engage every kid with a story, picture, book, etc. always about the pedagogy
A4: Know that things go wrong with tech most of the time.. Let the Ss help you figure it or Plan B out
A4 The only obstacles engaging Ss w/ tech is NETSWEEPER, blocked locations on the network. But, we have made progress there!
A4 My best PD experience in the last 12 months was . So major obstacle: Shhh!. Final answer.
A5. Ss empowerment leads to improvement as Ss start owning their education, sharing their needs & wants. No room for assumptions!
A5) Students feel as though they are part of the community. They feel they have a voice and are more engaged.
A5: Empowering Ss gives them ownership and most are willing to show they can be successful.
A5: School improvement requires student perspective. Empower students to take voice from words to action.
T's share openly all the time have for years, not revolutionary, what's old is new with fancy new slogans.
A2-The bottom line is opportunity for all scholars. We have to give them the opportunity to be empowered not assume only certain 1s
A5 Empowerment gives Ss sense of purpose, drive & motivation to create & get involved on bigger scale outside of school environment
A4: Obstacles:Blocks & bans, & unequal access to tech. Some classes have 1:1, in school, I don't, Ss's expect. Lesson links blocked.
we have been through design process and are prototyping - providing lots of support too
yes so creativity is a strong component of student engagement A4
that's great - if the winter ever goes away, I would like to set up gathering spaces so they can do the same
A5: Empowerment creates the students feeling of belonging and they have a sense of ownership in the school and their learning.
A5: in an in-direct way, don't students run our school? Don't they fuel what's going on? If they're empowered, we succeed!!!
A4 bc ss are doing a lot of digital making outside of school, its hard to attract and excite them when they been there and done it!
A5 Empowering Ss will lead them taking to ownership/responsibility of school & their education. This will lead to true improvement
Empowerment, having a voice & being heard. S ideas build a better school bc they are part of the process. Improved learning.
TodaysMeet is great. Anonymous though. Thinking of starting Google Classroom for my school. Could then run a backchannel.
A5:the more Ss have voice, the more engaged & invested they become. That can only lead to a better school overall w/o a doubt
A5: Empowered Ss can be an additional resource & partner in school imprvmnt. Can also encourage other Ss and Ts to take risks.
A5:If you allow place based learning/project based learning, students SERVE their communities in authentic ways! Freedom~innovation
I worked in an urban district and this would have been useful for me
A5: Voice & Choice leads to change! Students want a great school just like Admins & Ts do.
Always going to be obstacles. Need to have "can do" attitude, work within our sphere of influence, continue to reach out to others.
A3 In 3rd grade writers workshop I tweet/Instagram student work. They always work harder when they know I am going to publish work
A5: Empowered Ss have ownership of their learning environment. This creates excitement to learn and strong connections.
A5. When Ss are invested, decisions made will keep them in the forefront. This improves schools by involving others.
A4: Not obstacle for me but one for MOST others I work w/: refusal to go get HQ pd & lrng opps. https://t.co/cT43p0zsNu
Great idea. Do they post those pics somewhere (blog or site) or just store them. I toyed with this ideas as well.
Ss have to put their names when contributing to :) And can use speaker colors to decipher https://t.co/osB4d4tnBG
TodaysMeet is great. Anonymous though. Thinking of starting Google Classroom for my school. Could then run a backchannel.
A5 When students are empowered they take ownership and become more invested. They take more pride in both the effort and outcome.
I agree, but I think you need to push slowly - I introduce only 3-4 new digital tools a year
A5: When Ss are empowered they are not only going to be leaders of tomorrow but the problem solvers of today!
A5- without students schools wouldn't thrive and grow the way they should!
A4 Not many obstacles, as long as we're flexible w/ instruction. Ex: Falling off Internet, device not charged etc. Always a plan B!
Q5 - it's their place - becomes I get to go to school here instead of I have to go to school here
We participate in Math tasks daily. Ss are eager to share unique way to solve problems.
I think Ss really believe they are engaged. Ts who see tech may jump to conclusion they aren't into the lesson.
What do you need for those? Other than hope you feel much better! https://t.co/VE1GvQNvt4
A4: Would love to include more virtual reality. Used VR fieldtrips and Ss loved it!
build relationships every day.
A4: Do students even think of phones as tech?
A5: for Ss means school ; school becomes a place Ss want to come to, not just have to
Thinking & asking why kids are distracted is better than punishing. Meet them in the future. It's a new day https://t.co/C60MgNEXnU
A5 how can you have school improvement wo student empowerment? Students are the energy of a school.
Yep. To me, being a solid relationship builder is most important, regardless of medium.
A5: from a business perspective - it's all about the customer (the Ss) Great things happen when customer is satisfied!
A5: Ss that are empowered in the learning process = engaged Ss and motivated Ss towards success
A4: A barrier could be teachers feeling completely obligated to lead the learning as part of our technology evolution/revolution.
Yes for seamless integration of tech into classroom life.
Have an awesome Saturday! Must leave a bit early this morning! 😌
A5: Don't we all work harder when we have a say in what is going on? We are vested in the process. Students are no different.
Not only is their voice heard but people are listening to them and taking an interest in their needs and concerns.
A5: Student empowerment fosters school pride which leads to the creation of St initiatives that benefit the entire school family.
Learning that MATTERS!!! Yes!
https://t.co/dCdKOvBwLZ
A5:If you allow place based learning/project based learning, students SERVE their communities in authentic ways! Freedom~innovation
Right? I hear that parents love the open communications as much as T's!
A5: Empowering Ss leads to much more authentic experiences. School shouldn't be done to Ss. They need autonomy.
A5) In more ways than I can describe! Lrng fr a S perspective has been a game changer! Ss should be excited for school daily!
I'm at a T1. Doesn't stop is from doing robotics, tablets and typing. Slows us down for sure.
A5- empower Ss in the classroom. If every classroom has empowered Ss + Ss have a voice in the school = empowered school
A5 All stakeholders having a voice makes us a team, w/ a common goal. Ts are not dishing out a product. We're on a quest together.
A5:Sts need some amount of self-directed learning to find out who they are!
A5 Empowerment to be learners means becoming invested in learning, Its a professional LEARNING community.
A5. When learners are empowered and in control of own learning and leading, then they are truly free to learn/lead.
A5 challenged my student council to make school a better place, told them I'd support them in anyway-they have been incredible
has added some really awesome features for teachers. Classroom is a great tool too
totally true!-The best PD involves a high degree of hands-on for teachers, now if we could get that for principals!!
Shared INVESTMENT in student success begins w/ mindset from "my" S's to "our" S's. Shared ownership = shared success.
A4: Using meaningfully "The curriculum and instruction play the lead while the technology plays the supporting role."
great example of families working together to try to do what they can, glad they are able to also!
Nice! Want to share that doc? :)
A4: Filters, mindsets, and slow wifi at times. Creative detours help us overcome roadblocks.
Good morning Elizabeth, how are you?
Student constructed analysis of local community concerns – environment, crime, poverty
A5: When Ss are engaged and feel like an important part of the school community, growth is inevitable!
A5: Empowering Ss is the difference between them being involved vs being invested!
A5: Validation is a powerful tool. Validation leads to S empowerment. S empowerment leads to school improvement
Yep. And that means getting out of the way, but not necessarily leaving completely. :)
need to learn more on Hapara - i want to be able to push out PD to all my students
unfortunately, all programs come down to 💰💰💰💰 money. Not always spent where Ts think it should be.
Interesting, I tend to think it spends on individual student & the teachers effectiveness with classroom management.

A5- Empowered Ss = Happy Ss
Happy Ss = Happy school
Happy School = Amazing learning
A5 Empowerment gives students the courage to explore their own thoughts and ideas...creating leaders!
A3-there's lots of technology to use I've seen in my schoolsGoogle glasses Virtual tours, q codes,Twitter, docs, Google classroom,
A5: we are empowering Ss in our library through a huge transformation that includes a makerspace https://t.co/EeFepWwWpn
A5 When we empower our students we invest in them. They recognize that and in turn invest in the product of their efforts.
A5) brings motivation, motivation brings empowerment, empowerment increases learning, makes learning relevent
A5: Kung Fu Panda III: "If you always do what you can, you will never be more than you are!" Love that quote.
Q4: obstacle can be that Ts are not comfortable with using tech as a learning resource for Ss
well put! Empowering students can drastically alter school culture for the better
A3: Snapchat story of my life (he's human!!). Ask students how to use Snapchat, PHHHoto. Make them the expert, me student
Yes. Nothing is more meaningful than making learning relevant to both learners and community.
A5: With voice, school becomes more than a place they have to go. It becomes a place they want to be. Their place. Our place.
A5) Happy Ss = happy Ts, happy Ps along w productivity, engagement, motivation & achievement! A community of learners that thrives
must help all teachers go from fear of failure to courage and bravery toward but only with foundation
A4-I encourage my Ss to empower each other by working in partnerships, giving "shout outs", digital commenting, bucket filler slips
A5: Empowered Ss seek community success as much as individual success. These schools are full of joy and creativity.

A5 If school is like a living thing then change/growth should be a big part of it. How different does it look from last generation?
We probably need to follow up and ask Ss and Ts why there is such a difference.
A5 cont. Created an event that brings the school & community together set for this Saturday- kids accomplishing what adults won't
A5 S empowerment builds confidence. Ss more willing to share voice/take risks. Empowerment encourages Ss to lead their own learning
A5:Ss empowerment creates a positive culture of joint ownership. All stakeholders engage in school improvement. They want it!
Schools are a more positive place when students feel respected and not looked down on.
A5: A school with empowered students is truly a student centered school
. Detours also expose us to wonderful new sights, experiences we wouldn't have benefited from otherwise.
very exciting - would like to see projects where kids can bring home wifi to use at home at night
A3 Tech & Ss voice--Ss create video thinking products, podcasts & share + are connected in communities via Social Media
Allowing Ss ownership and voice empowers them to learn. We all win when that happens!
Student success & focus areas need 2 b shared school-wide. Math T's need to hear Eng focus, Science hear Art's, etc. (1o2)
Aha moments for sure when the quiet ones have bold, confident, profound answers. Happened yest. Shared with parent.
snapchat is a great idea!
Art portfolios are AWESOME. I would like to see portfolios used in all subject areas.
A5: Empowerment leads to ownership. Who owns the learning?
- I hope to improve that for in the coming year! https://t.co/rLFIPOJkFH
Yes. Nothing is more meaningful than making learning relevant to both learners and community.
Absolutely! https://t.co/hItsVYhXJI
We probably need to follow up and ask Ss and Ts why there is such a difference.
A5 kids GROW - as T Guide, T/Ss Recognize needs (data), Ts help Ss Organize learning opportunities, and Ss Win - Ss feel invested
Learners and leaders need to be comfortable taking a backseat to others. Learning for life means we don't always answer.
Well said, Justin. Ts. in a "gotcha environment" will find it hard to be creative and innovative.
Not yet, but this week hopefully! https://t.co/eBcTtXFmke
Glad to be here! How's the weather up in MD? Any sign of spring yet?
yup!! can lead to shift and help influence culture and expectation- it can be just a few Ss & Ts who can sway!
Well said! https://t.co/mQNfb8e7V2
A5: With voice, school becomes more than a place they have to go. It becomes a place they want to be. Their place. Our place.
who are engaged, given choice options, have voice are the voices of culture of trust. Bldg community is key. A5

Holy Cow!!! Yes, this... https://t.co/XHkIfhZq1D
A5: When Ss are engaged and feel like an important part of the school community, growth is inevitable!
A5: Relationships. People are going to invest in something if they know that they are a contributing member of the community.
Likely increases engagement, efficacy, attendance, ownership & individualization of personal learning, interaction btw T's & S's.
That's awesome!!! Lucky class https://t.co/3tG8H7ZgZm
We finished in 9th place last year. Made the best connections when the zookeeper came from London to meet my class! chat
Lots of talk about empowering Ss. Encourage, inspire, challenge and support. Our classroom and school cultures are critical.
I forgot my hashtag to A5.
A5: 2000 empowered students is better than 3 empowered administrators. Though having both is nice ;)
make the difference; would rather see Ts try and on behalf of Ss than not try at all https://t.co/Xy4LzJ2Qbx
must help all teachers go from fear of failure to courage and bravery toward but only with foundation

Great idea. Do they post those pics somewhere (blog or site) or just store them. I toyed with this ideas as well.
teachers should be encouraged to allow students to use their technology
Love this ! Sometimes pressure to do a lot, but even just 1/marking period=4/year is 4 great memories/experiences

Very true! https://t.co/8SpoxZ6Lzm
A5: 2000 empowered students is better than 3 empowered administrators. Though having both is nice ;)
Yes, students post on sticky notes, then Ss or I tweet out
I like the idea of having the students teach you things - hammers home the connections of learning and roles of S/T
Schools and classrooms have a much more positive atmosphere when students feel respected and not looked down on.
A5: student empowerment is the only way to improve your school atmosphere - give them the tools and they will soar!
Q6: What is one idea from this chat you will implement Monday morning?
Yes!! Some of the most important work that we do.
Student empowerment fosters school pride which leads to the creation of St initiatives that benefit the entire school family
We live about 1hr. away from 2 caves and 80% said they've never seen 1. Ss need those experiences.
A6 got sidetracked with a phone call after A1... will read posts and hope to implement on Monday!
A5- project based learning is one amazing way to empower students
A few pioneers sharing their stories makes a difference! https://t.co/xniSS5dcCa

what a great ideas as well!
Totally agree. They are apart of the process not just talked to. Engaging them.
We start every Dept chair meeting w shared success from each dept. Everyone hears how other Dept's are succeeding. (2o2)
the best is when Ss give shout out to another Ss and I didn't even see it coming!
Agreed! Important to keep taking one step at a time!
Yes! And it's so apparent the second you step in any classroom.
Wow! Where are you again? I can't wait for warmer weather... I'm a summer girl!
This is a great reminder and so important!
A3-when visiting schools I have seen chrome books used, movie maker, document cameras, plickers
A5 had my 2ndGs built roller coasters, they made what they thought was impossible, now nothing is impossible https://t.co/0e4jxxl8Yl
We must know answers to why we're using a technology tool. Post-it notes, index cards, and poster board also work well.
This is why formative assessment and feedback conversations are critical for building empowered learners https://t.co/lY9sF8NaS0
A6) There are many tools I have not heard of mentioned here. I will research them and use to give Ss empowerment.
. agreed! Relationships, not testing, is the heart of education
We have our first virtual debate going on next week at it models student empowerment and engagement
Maybe they need models to help them along. A4
Yes. It connects so much for Ss. Gives them experiences they might not have otherwise.
Might need fewer administrators with more empowered Ss. Oh wait. https://t.co/cdGg0ZIxOn
A5: 2000 empowered students is better than 3 empowered administrators. Though having both is nice ;)
A5: Student empowerment often = S engagement = S learning = S achievement improvement.
Always amazing to hear the Virtual Debate! https://t.co/G9QHSDVe4J
We have our first virtual debate going on next week at it models student empowerment and engagement
virtual connections allow us to meet others we might not ever had the chance to-dif perspectives
A6: going to look at the resources shared & write a blog to share with staff and others about Ss empowerment
A6. Using Ss blogs to connect with other learners! This will be embedded into writing/literacy centers.
Student voice and comply cannot appear in the same sentence... https://t.co/8cSy3tL42t

yes!! My Ss can still be a little shy about complimenting each other. They will tell me & I send them right over to the S
Tech greatly enhanced learning if used correctly.Nothing replaces quality teaching from the heart .Connectivity an issue at times
A6: Focus on PD for Ts to help incorporate tech meaningfully
Apple refuses to unlock phones; we should be more concerned that our children's minds locked up. https://t.co/AeMRGcrFQI
If teens are avoiding eye contact—instead glued to their phones—they are avoiding books even more: https://t.co/dZvEkSbN4b
Looking for teachers to interview who are actively using Ss cell phones during instruction. Thx for RTing!
A6: Review all the different answers on technology and student engagement.
When you empower students. You become in the words of " a true merchant of hope".
plus I feel digital communication different from f2f. many assume otherwise

Instead of telling Ss to turn off cell phones why not show them how to use them properly for education?
Love all the opportunities to engage! The "ask a question" feature is great, and now you can "voice type" too!
It is apart of our lifestyle and it's a part of their outside of clsrm. Why stop it every day in learning environment?
I haven't used (or even heard about) yet--sounds like it's worth checking out?
Thanks for the awesome learning! Connect and I'd love to add you to my PLN to learn from you! :-) Have a great week!
So great. Would love to hear how this goes!
A5: Empowered Ss focus on learning in & out of school, not grades; give feedback 2 school re: what is working=school improvement.
Keenly aware of as a powerful agent of change. Provide Ss with choice. A6
A5: I have been asked the secret to how my Ss score so well on tests. They are invested, motivated, and love choice.
A6: I want to make it a point to engage a T in my building who is not utilizing tech/SM yet & encourage them to & offer to help
A6: Ss will be telling me their best way to learn in this next unit on China
Opening Dept Chair meetings w/ shared success allows teachers to recognize their peers for pushing students & themselves.
makerspace has been empowering for many of my kids as well, planned over summer & opened it in October
Totally agree! Love ability to link GForms, too! https://t.co/0qY4Tsr5Uq
Love all the opportunities to engage! The "ask a question" feature is great, and now you can "voice type" too!
A5 Typical process improvement includes bar graphs showing wins. Show me da misses. It's mindset. Adults get hung up on improvement
Send it out to all of us Bobby. A6
Always a great way to further the learning and reflection! https://t.co/cU78EelvjF
A6: going to look at the resources shared & write a blog to share with staff and others about Ss empowerment
Hope is powerful! When you empower students. You become in the words of " a true merchant of hope".
A6. The one thing I will implement from our chat is to collaborate with other schools to empower my students to create change.
A6- write a blog post about some of the things I've read today and collate them!
A6: Really like the idea of having Ss use phones to take pics of notes. Can post to their blog to reflect upon later.
Technology social skills are just as important as social skills. When do they get taught or do we expect Ss to know them?
Capacity to lead should be built at all levels which leads to empowerment at all levels.
It's awesome. My Ss love the lessons as well as the VR fieldtrips. All are engaged.
I'm shadowing Tuesday! So excited
A6 Continue building strong relationships w/ Ss. Encourage S voice to empower Ss to take ownership & reflect on their own learning.
A6 Great takeaways about student blogging, school-wide chats, backchannels & tools to support digital conversations. Thank you!
- Mike from MD, lurking around procrastinating the morning.
A5 What did we (learning community) try that students came up with?
Or having older Ss teach younger ones. Lasting experience for both
A6: notch up my "listening" skills and see where listening can be turned into doing!
A5 Empowerment unleashes creativity, leadership, innovation- things you can't teach grow from within the students
Please help with a RT to share the news, beginning this Wednesday we will have a weekly Excited! https://t.co/8ss81FodKY
Agreed! That kind of collaboration is important to help build confidence and competence among Ts.
Definitely the truth. As a growing leader I've had to become more comfortable w/not knowing all answers!
There is a lot of truth in that but at times that is a really hard thing to do https://t.co/uLyo32sVrf
Teachers should "un-assume" that student misbehavior is a personal attack on them and try to understand it instead.
one of my favorite projects on forces and motion- also built boats that held bricks & planes (1 working propeller)
I would like to start a makerspace in elementary. Good luck. Hope all goes well. https://t.co/YNARhLIhAd
just got a grant this year to start it -- working now to shift the culture and encourage HS Ss to just PLAY!
A6:I'm going to pull a kid or two into my office & have them give me a tutorial on Snap Chat. Learn from the pros!
Teachers cannot empower students without feeling empowered themselves. So lucky to work in a district where admin empower us
A6: If I had a class to go to, I'd continue to step back and let students do more of the talking, asking, leading
Want to make a connection so folks know what we do! https://t.co/Yr8IO3aFLQ
So great. Would love to hear how this goes!
I'm afraid Ts are going to be hung up on improvement as long as "data only" admins/legislators are. https://t.co/kVQ6dHfSoL
A5 Typical process improvement includes bar graphs showing wins. Show me da misses. It's mindset. Adults get hung up on improvement
A6:I will definitely check out https://t.co/7gdRrwnB95 to help my 2nd graders with their writing. Thanks for giving us opp to share
This is something I'm seeing. What are you doing to encourage others Ts to learn tech? https://t.co/lIZ71UV0d8
Q4: obstacle can be that Ts are not comfortable with using tech as a learning resource for Ss
After S presentations, I have the Ss provide strength & weaknesses; they get better at it as year progresses.
A6) idea of student principal for the day!
Yes. Being innovative and creative beyond the road blocks. Critical thinking skills.
A6 I'm going to try being less adult about the whole thing. It's something I do already. So maybe doing more of it w/more people?
Great point, Ss need to understand their digital footprint.
Hey - Pls welcome my awesome Asst P to Twitter! So proud of his work & always appreciate his suppt!
you hit the nail on the head! We need to show Ss how to grow & persevere thru processes. https://t.co/0KOtBu3E22
We've created our own monsters obsessed w/ the almight A instead of process and quality experiences. https://t.co/WdgiOcibqM
oh yes! I've observed similar situations where Ss are looking for the a-z guide to an A, ignoring the freedom of exploration!
LOL! No doubt Brian. Wonder why we don't let Ss show mastery in different ways?
A6: It can be a challenge to to answer & keep up for this, but here's one! Make GDoc to collect tech tool tips for ss. Via
A:5 when we acknowledge, share, and celebrate what Ss are doing, this ultimately leads to a shift in mindset and school improvement
Thinking the same thing! https://t.co/Cyd1xKpMYI
A6: notch up my "listening" skills and see where listening can be turned into doing!
I agree! But, most important to me is the relationship building. Don't think all need virtual or F2F.
No different than parenting. It is right to not take it personally, but when we are in deep the emotions are big.
Right on! Releasing myself from that 'need to control'...big learning for me!
So true! https://t.co/XqI3Y4huCG
Capacity to lead should be built at all levels which leads to empowerment at all levels.
Endless RTs... https://t.co/ed7DLsmwu5
The best strategy to implement if you want to help kids learn better is to form positive, caring relationships with them.
A5) Student empowerment creates a pathway to student leadership. Leaders inspire others.Students inspiring students is best outcome
Have a great weekend Chris!
A6: Taking part in Shadow a Student for a day.
It’s not just about tech, its about encouraging innovation and creativity. That’s when true school improvement happens.
Great! And do all students respond?
Or, model learning to your class as a whole and have them all show you!
Loving the shared vision for empowering Ss
Yes! Great work should result in great learning and great press!
I'm close to retirement so..
Great post Jay! We need to become facilitators & let our students become the teachers and learners
Yes, yes, yes! We do this daily through "partner time" in readers and writers workshop! https://t.co/Bv3D0wocRX
After S presentations, I have the Ss provide strength & weaknesses; they get better at it as year progresses.
this is an awesome idea! I may follow suit ⭐️
seems like this could really impact the school if the admin takes an honest look have fun!
A6: I will look for more ways to give students voice and choice.
A5 S's need to be able to hold the key. They know which doors they need to unlock and how long they need to stay in each room.
A2. All Ss have a voice, even the youngest. Ss need choice and chance to be heard.
Data is good but must include qualitative as well and get us out of the numbers game. https://t.co/1jmd3JNqeW
I'm afraid Ts are going to be hung up on improvement as long as "data only" admins/legislators are. https://t.co/kVQ6dHfSoL
A5 Typical process improvement includes bar graphs showing wins. Show me da misses. It's mindset. Adults get hung up on improvement
fantastic point! Show that student work matters!
one of these was over 40 feet long, 3 completed 360 loops (original challenge) refer to it when something is "hard"
& Kik, ... I can't keep up!
The days of no cell phones is over. Let's move away from the industrial age of education
A6. Friday inspiration and reaffirmation from will help me continue to emphasize the questions, rather than answers.
A6 Seriousless. I read that on twitter somewhere.
That’s a great goal! Good luck!
Seems like some great things going on in your state!
With the state of politics, how do we tell students it's not acceptable to call one another losers, idiots, and real dopes?
I'm curious what you mean about "less adult". Do you mean more eager to try new things?
Totally agree. Student centered.
Thanks, , as always for a professional learning experience at the crack-ish of dawn! Next task after coffee: Vote in SC primaries!
we're working to expand our makerspaces for creation in elementary w/ vision of invention at HS level. https://t.co/adsic3vtPH
I would like to start a makerspace in elementary. Good luck. Hope all goes well. https://t.co/YNARhLIhAd
just got a grant this year to start it -- working now to shift the culture and encourage HS Ss to just PLAY!
A6:Will share this Twitter chat & have students reflect on a choice of Tweets! Too many to choose from. LOVE my Twitter Peeps!
A6: Love the idea of using the digital trail we create to help Ss reflect on their growth, especially when they are feeling low.
A6: I would love to bring you all with me into my schools so we could work together in supporting S voice! 😊😊😊 You ROCK!!!
- how do we give helpful (not hurtful) ? .
Thanks, , as always, for a professional learning experience at the crack-ish of dawn! Next task after coffee: Vote in SC primaries!
A6: Get Ss involved in the development/ planning of our Makerspace by giving them roles & reg time to discuss their ideas
Relationships. Definitely. https://t.co/RfVf8rqcyW
A4. It does make me wonder, what is most important? Depth of relationship building, or breadth of tool usage?
I love the idea of Virtual Field trips. Ss in the urban core need more exposure to the world around them and making connections.
A:1 can be heard verbally in our in our collab discussions and written in our feedback on Google projects
Nothing better than learning from others. That's how we get better
You say its over but I have seen plenty of wall charts to place phones recently.
Empowerment only occurs when we transfer control over to the students. https://t.co/PZxrpG9Zb4
A5 Empowerment unleashes creativity, leadership, innovation- things you can't teach grow from within the students
Move toward - less = more for Ss & Ts https://t.co/E1BaYUoU4O
LOL! No doubt Brian. Wonder why we don't let Ss show mastery in different ways?
How can Ts not be. Immediate data reqs immediate results. Not long term strat. thinking. Grades+scores=evals=salary
Very good point it is hard. But we had a very good conversation with our 7th graders on tolerance & they get it
A6) Continue learning from my Ss, help them to understand how powerful their words are
. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you! That's great! https://t.co/UY1yUuUckV
We are looking at 21st Century grant for a possible after-school program to give Ss tech time, rec time, help time. Possibility!
Creating a foundation of discovery and continuing thru HS has to result in amazing minds. https://t.co/bHEZk1hlxX

A6: Will deepen student voice in strategic planning as we move ahead.
Nice! Want to co-write one together? I have the same thing in mind
Great invention My 1st thought is yes teaching is a challenge, problems vary-but this teacher seems awesome
Getting kids' attention is about creating interest. Keeping their attention is about building relevance. Kyleen Beers. .
A6: Share some Tweets at a faculty meeting! Discuss ideas.Great way to get people exposed to Twitter w/out "doing" the chat!
& model learning to your staff as a admin. Teachers will follow where admin. lead with their actions.
love making instruments! one of the challenges in our makerspace opening to encourage tinkering
Have a great weekend everyone!
A6: Will need to go back and reread posts. Feeling as though I will be borrowing the brilliance from many today!
I think a balance between the two is good :) Of course Face 2 Face is just as important as digital!
When we give them a place to be vulnerable and do so ourselves, Wonders can be built.
A5. When Ts and Admin actively listen to Ss and make changes based on Ss needs, achievement goes up. Ss feel valued & respected
Thanks Dani! period is pure student voice with all resources to empower their learning https://t.co/cU2GwAYd8d
A1 Love 's EdCamp period - Can't think of a better way of incorporating student voice & choice!
And the Ts see a kid missing a question, failing (even temporarily) as jeopardizing their standing, their $$
A5 empowerment breeds creativity and draws S's out of the box.
Time for us to own how we show improvement, achievement, success. Tech & S empowerment can be the venue. https://t.co/SY3PlKVh7m
I'm afraid Ts are going to be hung up on improvement as long as "data only" admins/legislators are. https://t.co/kVQ6dHfSoL

Playful. Being serious (major adult trait) means we think about "The Fix". Less adult = more creative solutions?
Our kids do amazing things when we give them a voice. Empower them. Love them. Let them soar! https://t.co/7SuMBeNnZZ
, truly a community effort!Big Thanks to WWP teachers/administrators
In Class: Student asks a great question, and another student responds, "Hold on, I'll look it up."
We need all 3 & to create classrooms that are safe to allow Ss to see failing as opportunity, not defeat! https://t.co/kTInknGEKd
It’s not just about tech, its about encouraging innovation and creativity. That’s when true school improvement happens.
Interesting! We're teaching to 21st cent Ss; but are we mtg their needs w/ the tools embed in their lives? https://t.co/PrPiSxJ2xS
Q4 On recent survey, 80% of our Ts say Ss are distracted by tech. But only 20% of Ss report they are distracted by tech. :)
love it! I remind myself that devices & gadgets are 2b controlled not Ss. They need to be coached from the sidelines.
BOOM! Don't say "No"! Let Ss and Ts take risks
Thats awesome. Especially if the HS Ss are the ones explaining and demonstrating
Hate that I missed the 1st half...great chat!
A6 I am going to take my Ss on a virtual field trip to celebrate Black History Month
Check out and . We have had some great learning opportunities through them.
I love data. I love assessment, but it's being used wrong by too many admins -> scares Ts -> bad classroom practice.
Ha! Yes, we have 10 minutes of sharing time at beginning of every meeting-freedom to share! Wow!
Hi there ! Just jumping on -- HS English teacher in Chicago. Look forward to getting caught up here

I've been down the last few days. is today (2 hours from now). Should I stay (home)? Or should I go?
Sounds like an excellent, organized district. Seems like too many mtgs simply push an agenda from "on high".

Congrats to 2016 NASSP Digital Principal Award Winners
The drive for accountability has driven assessment use. Priority must be to build S investment and inform instruction
you are such a realist! How can we bring more admins & other leaders on board? https://t.co/aXr0BIUhSG

Yes. Easier said than done. Sometimes you have to remind yourself regularly. We can't view misbehavior as failure.
that's our job as teachers - letting go!
Indeed! Couldn't agree more.
Thanks for my 1st chat experience! It was interesting!

Yes. Easier said than done. Sometimes you have to remind yourself regularly. We can't view misbehavior as failure.
A6: I am going to start connecting directly with all our students to share new ideas and digital tools to try out
When teachers feel valued and supported, students reap the benefits...engagement, joy, empowerment, learning all around.
I'd also recommend Schoology. It's free and there's a backchannel chat app add on. https://t.co/CdcQN9yboo
TodaysMeet is great. Anonymous though. Thinking of starting Google Classroom for my school. Could then run a backchannel.
WOW ! I have to tell you I've been looking for a few good invention lessons...I'll def use this--sweet!
Mahalo Jay. Humbled to be honored with Glenn and Bobby.
Thank you for another inspirational Saturday morning! Hope everyone has a great week!

Agreed. Its classroom use of formative assessment which will change all other assessment outcomes. Must be our focus
Agree. Personally done many 1-1 training w/tchrs. 1new tech tool a time. Work within Ts comfort zone.
My question 4 PLN is: how do u utilize critical thinking in teaching? pls share any Qs u have https://t.co/MWYNjcRs9F
Feel the same about my 1st graders. They truly do teach me something new everyday. THEY make ME better!
A4: Our over reliance on novelty to drive tech engagement can be crippling.
Goes both ways! Thanks Dani!
LOVE that Q We need to ignite their curiosity, passion & give them a voice, from day 1 to 180 https://t.co/NDougQOP2f
A5: With voice, school becomes more than a place they have to go. It becomes a place they want to be. Their place. Our place.
4 all Ts who feel pressure of "why am I not like her/him yet!?" Or "I need to be doing more!" Just do YOU! https://t.co/Xl7C8h0Zno

My Input? Listen to your Teacher and Parents, they know'd stuff
What say you ? Might we be hung-up on this whole "evidence/research-based" thing? Maybe bring it down a notch? What matters to Ss?

Thanks for letting me pop in-this is a very cool group
1 on 1 may be the best. Ts can be intimidated by new tech & afraid to try in large group...like our Ss. :)
Interesting that tchrs still see tech this way. Need to go beyond the tech. Engage the students.

Mahalo Brad for the opportunity to moderate
If only more educators would realize the power of engaging and sharing with other educators on ! Wealth of info shared.
In my classroom this looks like use of tech, tech tools, & teaching but letting Ss demonstrate w/choice https://t.co/wZuoO7Um82
Q1: How do you hear student voice in your school?
it was just Next Gen Science combo w/ Eng. Design process. I love 7y/o explaining design process,&wasting prototype
What do kids need? More dogs. More play. More music. More love. More voice & choice. More balance! https://t.co/sAlcsq5DK7
Quinn, you are singing a tune I love to hear,
yeah, I wish it weren't so but the really good lessons tend to be the long ones!
I taught 1st grade for 15 years, learned so much from my lil Ss, love first grade!!

May have joined late, but plenty of learning to catch up on w/ coffee now! THX for leading!
Such a great age. I'm super lucky!
Most certainly! And yet, it took me a while to become comfortable leading with questions, rather than answers!
Don't assume they don't know! Adults don't like that, Ss shouldn't experience that either! https://t.co/55c3CR9m0l
Q2: As a leader, what assumptions did you have to "un-assume” to empower students?
Reading Fostering Resilient Learners. What was the last book you read that made you think deeply about your craft?
Bernie Sanders Wants to Legalize Marijuana and Empty Prisons of Drug Offenders and $15 Wage https://t.co/u7cOKgCShh

I'm re-reading The Name of the Rose, a brilliant look at how to open, or how to control, learning
So much better than when a department or two would have to share one phone line to call parents!
Thanks for the grt convo today. Now let's get our Ss voice heard in our clsrm and schls. Awesome insights!
