Interested in student-driven classrooms? Join Dr. Nancy Sulla @nsulla (author of Students Taking Charge, Its Not What You Teach But How, Building Executive Function: The Missing Link to Student Achievement, and more) and educators from all over in #LATICchat on Thursday nights at 8pm ET. We hope to bring together a community of educators to share insights, stories, examples, pictures from their classrooms, and more. We welcome all educators to join; no need to be running a #LATIC classroom.
Hello and welcome to #LATICchat tonight! We are talking about The Power of #Coding to Build #ExecutiveFunction in Students! Join in as we celebrate #HourOfCode this week! Introductions, please...
A1) When I learned to program in C I felt like I could now control the computer instead of the computer controlling me. ;-) Coding keeps you in the driver's seat! #LATICchat
A1: In this day and age, coding literally makes the world go 'round... without coding so many functions we take for granted everyday would not occur... ad we need the future coders to continue innovating and make that happen! #LATICchat
A2 I can speak for my own kiddo... the level of focus and persistence she exhibits every time she codes is amazing. The immediate feedback is powerful, too. #LATICchat
David, I know this is part of your classes all of the time. What's your favorite example of students' coding with a real-world problem and audience in mind? #LATICchat
A4 coding hits most of the areas mentioned for executive functioning but I think an overlooked area is cognitive flexibility because your best plans and solutions sometimes don't quite work out and require adjustments. Locked into a singular mindset will prevent that.

I once had my students program the computer to play their part in the orchestra ... I remember to this day all of them counting down to hit the return key at the exact same time ... and they did it ... they room was playing a symphony of all different instruments #LATICchat
Science: code a program that automatically collects data at the exact same point every day for an experiment. This is not what I see a lot of though. Most coding I see is explore and play, which is important but how can it be useful/applicable to the Ss immediate life

A6) It's all about recognizing that the computer must be told exactly what to do so it does not take unintended actions that could be problematic! #LATICchat
A6 inhibitory control, you must make sure you are precise and clear with what you are writing to make it match your intent to avoid unintended consequences. If you are not focused it all falls a part.

A7 write down the visualization first. Make it clear enough a third party would understand. If it's clear enough they understand it, the computer probably will too

When you get back after the new year, you have to try out the Listen and Draw activity in @nsulla Building Executive Function - Appendix G... would be perfect for building this skill. I will share. #LATICchat
Happy Holidays, #LATICchat Friends! We wish you a happy and a merry... and a fantastic new year! See you when #LATICchat on January 10, 2019! #ChangeTheWorld
