A1: Ts leaders are not afraid to try new things and make mistakes!
A1: Q shouldn't be can tchrs B leaders, rather do our leaders continue to be teachers? https://t.co/Yjm7FYtVeg
Q1 Why is teacher leadership important in today’s schools?
Will be interesting to see how districts in NJ embrace the new "Teacher Leadership" endorsement. Any thoughts?
A1: What an incredibly significant change it would make if shared leadership spread throughout the district!
Oooh, I like that idea... Maybe that's why I'm always getting in trouble??
A1: Teacher Leadership gives ownership to school goals. Without ownership it's another thing being done "to them".
And to add another layer-some admin, in NY at least, have never taught a day in their life!
A2 Fear of needing official title/piece of paper to vouch for good ideas&experience. Ts must JUMP IN head first, embrace leadership
QUESTION 2
https://t.co/P6xvRDuHqJ
Q2 What are some challenges that prevent us from cultivating & supporting teacher leadership? How can we overcome these challenges?
it is essential to give teachers a voice
And, those on the front line see the most "combat", know what the challenges are, and what is needed to succeed. (Teachers)
Prof Susan in IL joining in now that I have my coffee. Remember that we in the Midwest are joining on farmer hours. Best to all!
When it comes to school improvement, policy implementation, or discussions about vision, teachers need to be involved!
Those who try to lead others often alienate themselves. True leaders create other leaders around themselves & others want to follow
Correct. Was spkg of admins who DON'T foster tchr ldrshp possb bcuz their time as a teacher was Very limited.
A1 Teachers have an important & unique view on keys to school success & where focused work is necessary. Their leadership matters.
A2: Schools with too many committees. Looks good on the surface but sometimes lots of discussion and little action...creates noise.
I like the emphasis of a "healthy" school culture. It really is essential. https://t.co/JEqbNvUrXa
A1: Teacher leadership is an integral part of a healthy school culture. Without it students do not have a chance to be successful
A1 we need to grow leaders now more than ever. Ss need models.
A2: When admins use teacher leaders as lower level admin the model doesn't work. It creates barriers
I am better at asking forgiveness than permission so I expect to be in the wood shed on occasion. !
A2)A challenge is time to truly cultivate. Find more time by moving meetings to the cloud so you can assist in developing your team
I reach out to colleagues w/information, questions, ideas inclusively, greater transparency.
A1. We need to work collaboratively together. Voice matters.
Model and help them see. Don't give up!
Love it Connie https://t.co/QtY1NlxIVp
It's like the saying "The answer's in the room" only I say "The answer's in your staff"
I'm great. My break has gone on far too long though. https://t.co/joFAtoqshb
Hi Christina. Amazing! Loving spring break. How are you?
Maureen - you're right: it's about empowerment to collectively make decisions & always improve. https://t.co/99iyiSraqb
Kate, that was me--now I'm learning the strategies that go w/teacher leadership--empowering. Follow
Working together is the key. It's a community of educators coming together to help every Ss succeed.
A2: Challenges are Ts feeling their leadership is valued by As. As can cultivate T leadership by encouraging it, not smothering it
A2: Some As don't understand how to work with T leaders, some feel threatened. But, we are all trying to do the same thing for Ss
A2. Lack of trust, fear of shared leadership. Overcome by allowing Ts to lead where they are needed. Listen & they will tell you.
A2: At the school level, I don't think there are limits as long as admin create this atmosphere
A2:same fear Ts face in the classroom: getting past the fact that you do not need to know everything. Ts want to help their school.
Q2 Poor leadership above Ts. Or worse.
Reading this one now. Just finished Explore like a Pirate by
, what is Q2? Had to step away for a minute.
A2: Sometimes the terms leaders and managers are mixed up. Leaders gain followers through trust and the quality of their work.
A2: Admin unwilling to let themselves be vulnerable is a huge obstacle in many districts. https://t.co/0TgB3qBHjJ
Q2 What are some challenges that prevent us from cultivating & supporting teacher leadership? How can we overcome these challenges?
A2: Clearly defining formal roles, especially in states w/ strong associations (NJ). Informal TL still remains valuable.
A2: Challenge: Ts worry about perception of colleagues. Provide opportunities for T voice, and ensure it is heard and acted upon.
I didn't bother putting space for it to go to 2 digits
A2 trust in teachers by systems & schools can be a challenge. We need to start from a belief in others' capacities.
A1 This is such an important shift because to be current ed leader and teach leader in many ways are diff jobs--
A2: assuming Ts don't want to take on another task. Listen to what Ts want and ask if they want to be a part of the process.
A2: Challenges can include being the only one- thankful to have a valuable PLN on Twitter who can support me
A2: Time, time, time. Tchrs are working 110%, difficult to take on additional stressors ... https://t.co/5fL56GbWqp
Q2 What are some challenges that prevent us from cultivating & supporting teacher leadership? How can we overcome these challenges?
A2: Using social media & other tech tools allows more collaboration
A2- In conferencing w school leadership, it seems that TL challenges are mostly logistical- union contracts, money & release time
A2: why do admin think they are the primary leaders? They couldn't do anything without dedicated staff
A2: One challenge to cultivating & supporting teacher leadership is the top down attitude of some school and district level leaders
A2 When agendas are pushed by those outside the classroom, it diminishes the needs of the students inside the classroom.
A2: The institutional inertia of a status quo where too few are willing to be the change. Down to me to model/lead positive change.
Somehow I figured that, Carl!
A2. Some challenges are unions, time, static culture, climate, top down administrative organization, fixed mindset, etc.
Thanks Carl! This is a topic I'm passionate about and I truly believe the answer is in our staff.
Collaboration is key 2 creating an empowering culture of teacher leaders! Collaborative Leadership:Pwrful!
Good stuff here Bill. Will try more of this and fight my frustration and practice patience.
A2 Time is one of the biggest challenge. Time to collaborate. Time to train.
A2: Fear, negative attitudes, the looming possibility of failure. We need to encourage risk taking and seizing opportunity
Leaders should lead, not stay behind closed doors pushing papers. I want them next to me, seeing what I face each day. Supporting.
totally agree. I also think the support from other Ts will be greater as they don't see that as top down.
A2: The different educational initiatives by legislators or state officials, don't give current initiatives time to develop.
Here you are! https://t.co/UZjD4I7qQ6
Q2 What are some challenges that prevent us from cultivating & supporting teacher leadership? How can we overcome these challenges?
A2: Ts feeling they don't have authority/power to lead. Encouraging Ts to be examples for specific topics established leadership.
I agree. Leadership is about empowering & developing others. Good leaders breed good leaders.
You're right Mike. The Students learn leadership from watching us https://t.co/oEk4UEvGjA
A1 we need to grow leaders now more than ever. Ss need models.
A2: Allowing teachers time, purposeful opportunities for input and voice into the solution help cultivate teacher
I agree. I believe admin needs to create the atmosphere of 360 communication, very similar to young innovative COs today
A2 Teacher leadership is not fostered when mtgs are filled with minutiae. Let Ts share practice, facilitate discussions
Also float thinking first so when you "meet" real well thought out decisions can be made.
Leaders are often tasked with bridging the gap between Ts and admin, while helping Ts trust each other. Tough to cultivate!
A2: Teacher leaders should be seen as support for Ts not an administrator of Ts. You can't support and be punitive at the same time
A2 Admins must embrace that they aren't necessarily smartest/best decision makers - Allow T voice often & consistently.
A1. If you cannot or are unable to "reframe" the leadership structure of your school, you'll continue to struggle.
The halls, the classrooms-- all places are filled with amazing!
the implications of that in a profession that's 85% female in a society socialized to see men as leaders are compelling.
A2: T Leaders are often ones already going beyond daily expectations. Need to encourage/cultivate many T leaders to avoid burnout.
Yes!!! Trust is HUGE. https://t.co/95elJy7GCF
A2. Lack of trust, fear of shared leadership. Overcome by allowing Ts to lead where they are needed. Listen & they will tell you.
Trouble means they are listening and you are shaking it up ... If it is in the best interest of kid you can't be wrong
A2) Top down management can exclude teachers. Teachers should always be involved in planning and discussions.
School leaders who isolate leadership constructs - limit their own effectiveness to be leaders! Empower!
I have the decorator coming next week to put a few homey touches in the woodshed. I'm there that often!
. Intention so key. Reckon one can bcome a teacher leader by accident, but sustained leadership the product of strategy
this top down attitude is simply bad thinking and should be banished - no school or district can function this way
Excellent point! https://t.co/o4Ff5sprPg
A2: assuming Ts don't want to take on another task. Listen to what Ts want and ask if they want to be a part of the process.
A2 Ts who resist leadership are a challenge, surround them with other T leaders. They will either join or leave
A2 A big limitation is how time is used. Many L's spend day making decisions while T's on task w/Ss--have to rethink time.
A2: System is rigged as control based hierarchy. Until Ts are treated as professionals they are, we won't see excellence we desire.
A2: We need to know the strengths of our individuals. Using a tool like this: https://t.co/OdyWHFMcj0 lets us get to know them.
Agreed. The school culture must be one of risk-taking, shared leadership & openness.
Tell me more! https://t.co/ZwlBWfefca
Will be interesting to see how districts in NJ embrace the new "Teacher Leadership" endorsement. Any thoughts?
A2 how about the punitive accountability measures imposed by policy at systems level?
You're welcome! I found it a lot easier to find Qs when I started using for chats.
Indeed. T leaders are the change, early adopters, don't wait for the slowest members of the caravan.
A2: Lack of trust or knowledge of how to do it well. Vulnerability.
A2) The mindset of some not thinking that a rising tide raise all the ships. Some get jealous when they see others being developed
EXACTLY OF WHAT I SPEAK Connie. Thanks for saying this. Admins who Never taught can't aprc8 Teacher ldrshp!
Sometimes Ts who step out to lead end up alienating their peers. They've jumped to the "dark side." We need to change that mindset
Ts have to believe they are empowered to lead Ss. This also means that Ts need to navigate conflict w/ Ss & seek to build relations
Yes! And teams and staffs of Ts like this do good stuff. Everyday.
A2: yes, and some colleagues feel threatened as well. Need to show we are there for Ss. https://t.co/lykLKbuVE2
A2: Some As don't understand how to work with T leaders, some feel threatened. But, we are all trying to do the same thing for Ss
But then Kate I wouldn't be happy if we were just doing stuff because someone said so and not thinking for ourselves
We also have to rethink structure--who has the time and who has the information.
Does the structure of the organization promote teachers as leaders?
A2 An entrenched educational bureaucracy can really wear down innovation. It can be risk averse, and allergic to change. !
A2: Changing perception of leadership in respect to titles and responsibilities. Overcome through discussion / interaction w/ staff
A2, 2. Being completely transparent in your decision making process in essential for building trust.
and good examples of good communication and feedback process at your school? which allows for teacher leadership?
because heaven forbid anything emerge naturally in school?
A2. Ts need to be as active as their discussion. Ts need to get up & lead, they don't need permission, though many feel the do.
A2We often use the excuse of "time". However, as MLK has pointed out, time is neither good or bad; it's what we do w it that counts
Agree!
The divided focus of many committees or separate initiatives dilutes effort and delays progress. https://t.co/1j2cqiKhV5
A2: Schools with too many committees. Looks good on the surface but sometimes lots of discussion and little action...creates noise.
A2: Ts need to be given time to be part of the process. If we do things after school all the time, they won't buy in.
A2. The hierarchy of the educational system is one reason teacher leadership isn't supported or cultivated.
agreed. both have extremely hard jobs. Even more reason to collaborate. Work smarter not harder.
A1. By not allowing teacher voice and input. This reverses educational progress.
A2:Committing resources to freeing up tchrs is almost impossible in today's austerity climate https://t.co/5fL56GbWqp
Q2 What are some challenges that prevent us from cultivating & supporting teacher leadership? How can we overcome these challenges?
I have said Sorry ... my Bad to many times to count ... Do it for the kids.
"We must find new ways that help teachers and children actuate and reciprocate educational ideals." Dr.H.Clein
A1 principals cannot do the job alone! There is no 'I' in team!
A2 Risk taking means taking risk, fear of the unknown can be scary: Take the plunge!
A2 faculty make up maybe? T skills to collaborate & communicate well. Admin need to model this. Maybe use protocols in PD?
Support from admin is key. If it fails it is the beginning of innovation. Just trying something new is important
Absolutely! So how so we help foster this mindset in more admin? Most here on already "get it" https://t.co/zfgJWVcx9u
School leaders who isolate leadership constructs - limit their own effectiveness to be leaders! Empower!
Always lots of Jersey folks! Marvel at this. Would expect more from larger states, but it's always NJ. https://t.co/vqWV6AxZlX
Lots of Jersey here today! Denis, K-12 Math Supervisor from Chatham NJ.
At our last DEAC meeting we discussed trying to move PD in the edcamp direction and use the talent of our Ts btw sorry I'm late
A2: as Ts with full class load not many schools can reduce T schedule to join leadership w/out impacting $ and course sections
A2: Time, trust, mandates are some obstacles. Also finding those willing to step up.
A2) Challenges: teacher comfort w/leadership, teacher concern w/being an outcast w/peers, teachers overwhelmed w/work of classroom
Dennis, that's the key, keep Ss and their families center stage.
Yes! Knowing your staff & their point of entry. Leadership is an individual journey
Schools need a double feedback loop: Ss to Ts, Ts to admin, helps to know when to pivot and when to persevere
Wish I had more. Too much uncertainty at this point. Will state require this position? Don't yet know. https://t.co/CTDKBnAP8V
Tell me more! https://t.co/ZwlBWfefca
Will be interesting to see how districts in NJ embrace the new "Teacher Leadership" endorsement. Any thoughts?
A2: Sometimes the best leaders in a school never wanted to be a leader. Quiet leaders are often underrated in schools.
A2 Teachers already have a heavy workload. Leadership opportunities seen as yet another add on.
I'm not sure I see the distrust of the teaching profession as gendered but that's an interesting lens.
yes! The actual structure may need to change
Agree! Many are willing to move forward & want the challenge! https://t.co/0OJDcimXia
A2: assuming Ts don't want to take on another task. Listen to what Ts want and ask if they want to be a part of the process.
A2 Challenge to all leadership is time. More and more demands, prof and personal, less time. Need innovative ways to collaborate.
I hear that all the time, it's frustrating to have administration associated with the "Dark Side"
A2: Sometimes administrators are looking for someone else to do their evaluations and job.
A2:We sometimes use "time" as an excuse not to tap teacher leaders. There is always a way to empower. Leadership is finding a way.
This is a key question and if the answer is no, then how can it?
https://t.co/tgdIAwjfUi
Does the structure of the organization promote teachers as leaders?
A2) Lack of confidence in people. Teachers can be quite humble. Encourage, support, allow them to take baby steps
A2: lack of trust is a challenge - in all directions
Administration at the building level can also serve as facilitators.
2)A principal needs to become more comfort with collaborative T work and develop more facilitation skills to provide T opportunity
A2 In my observations, the best organizations do not waste time talking. Welcome w/open arms, notice edu strengths,& invite to lead.
7 years? That would be amazing!
Absolutely. Admin need to celebrate the small wins to build capacity.
Teacher leaders look to develop PLCs district-wide and with other T-leaders - like
This is a key issue--many T's are left out of decisions, information share, time to create/plan, it can feel robotic
A2: your school librarians are the leaders in schools helping admins grow more leaders through coteaching.
A2: A closed culture is a challenge for growing human capital. Leadership of any kind is built by trust. https://t.co/AnzIh8dzro
I live and work in NJ but grew up in Illinois. Any Chicagoland folks here?
not celebrating amazing things Ts are doing deflates the moral. To keep the energy positive celebrate excellent instruction
Was just listening to podcast about importance of quiet leaders who don't crave the attention! Powerful. https://t.co/Kk22S2gZAZ
A2: Sometimes the best leaders in a school never wanted to be a leader. Quiet leaders are often underrated in schools.
Ditto. Goals, Strategies, and Mission statements need to be built from the ground up - not handed down from "On High"
A2: I think one huge barrier is testing -admin afraid of sharing control because they feel accountable to state/district/province
Yes Abe! Yes. Won't give up ever in the practice 18yrs &still have work 2do. My goal for
Some do, others provide only lip service, others not so much. !
How dare you make such a suggestion?! https://t.co/aIjg9vIm2f
because heaven forbid anything emerge naturally in school?
A2. Challenges can be overcome by admin willing to take a risk & share responsibility w/ one teacher on task. Then share with more.
Ditch the Textbook is awesome! Confirmed that need to be relavant
depends on definition of lead ... Leadership isn't always measure by getting up in front of people and talking
A2:If there is no trust, there will be no shared leadership. Relationships matter most of all.
It's so much more than traditional roles of T & admin. Leadership is leadership. Blur the lines and make positive change happen.
GOOD MORNING CLOWN CAR! Another Saturday together!
I agree! This leads Ss to feel empowered to innovate, share voice, & take ownership. https://t.co/kSjYaTSy85
A1: Ts need to feel like they have autonomy in their classrom, need to feel empowered to innovate & support Ss by any means.
A2 Swap out duty obligations for opportunities to serve on leadership teams. https://t.co/RIcGsaaaUk
Q2 What are some challenges that prevent us from cultivating & supporting teacher leadership? How can we overcome these challenges?
A2: Time, staff feeling pressure stay current, fear of failure, "competitive" climate...
We cannot just say we support teacher leadership; we must nurture it & develop the structures to ensure it. https://t.co/k9qAXb0uJY
This is a key question and if the answer is no, then how can it?
https://t.co/tgdIAwjfUi
Does the structure of the organization promote teachers as leaders?
Let's not overlook that the teaching profession is not valued enough by policymakers for Ts to be given real leadership roles.
Yes Danielle. Leaders really need to trust and let teachers grow in their leadership https://t.co/edfGCnH7Z0
A2. Lack of trust, fear of shared leadership. Overcome by allowing Ts to lead where they are needed. Listen & they will tell you.
A2: Fear of leader vs. teacher. Trust is a must. Collaboration is key.
Agreed ! There is no dark side - only student side. https://t.co/0KNCYO8c3W
Sometimes Ts who step out to lead end up alienating their peers. They've jumped to the "dark side." We need to change that mindset
A2 admin need to know difference between managing vs leading! Learn diff and build leadership capacity with Ts
This is a good reminder, as something that I do not do enough of. It is so important.
quite natural for those in power to want to retain power, especially at a time when it is threatened.
We had first unconference this year-loved it, only missing piece is that T's were not part of planning, reflection.
Important distinction. https://t.co/9Q1ZcY2v2q
A2: Schools with too many committees. Looks good on the surface but sometimes lots of discussion and little action...creates noise.
Are their voices really being heard? We talk a lot about student voice, but if Ts feel theirs isn't being heard, they won't offer it.
lol...it's called "Great minds think alike" !
is now trending in Canada, ranking 1
Yup. Sean from the Southwest suburbs.
Ts & Ss & Ads to Parents and the reverse as well. We all need to actively listen and communicate.
Always glad to see some univ profs on Twitter or other soc media. Actually much univ can learn from K12 re change
I think schools that value all Ts as leaders see great success!
It's not about pride. Humility, even the kinda fake kind to get the meeting done quicker... But not pride.
how do you follow such a fast chat? my first time on !
Yes, leadership can come in many forms.
A larger issue is society thinking less &less of the profession. Does school adm perpetuate thinking by minimizing T leadership?
Quiet leaders, love it! https://t.co/3SrzXBnYI0
Was just listening to podcast about importance of quiet leaders who don't crave the attention! Powerful. https://t.co/Kk22S2gZAZ
A2: Sometimes the best leaders in a school never wanted to be a leader. Quiet leaders are often underrated in schools.
I would offer that socialization around gender (and race) make it harder to blur those lines.
A3: T leaders are on different committees or can be seen as facilitators. We have team leaders for the different grade levels.
I agree, but Ts need to see failure is ok. Let's make failure not a bad word n edu. It's part of the process.
completely agree that families need to be kept in the loop and be given a place at the table
We must find ways to LISTEN to teachers. From short scheduled (consistent) meetings to anonymous exit slip surveys- take pulse!
Communication is Step#1- teacher leaders must not be afraid 2b advocates for TLeadership! Help Ps Realize!
Understandable, but Ts performance is going to be better overall if we can take ownership in the building. https://t.co/L4iAm5GHqc
A2: I think one huge barrier is testing -admin afraid of sharing control because they feel accountable to state/district/province
A tchr ldr needs to be comfortable w/fact they are clssrm T, & it may never be a stepping stone for something more.
In reality it is a balance. I have to bring home a paycheck. Find allies, its harder to fire a group. !
Might be bc the 3 of us (moderators) are NJ based
:)
Or everyone is up getting porkroll sandwiches! https://t.co/oGOUc7GsU5
Always lots of Jersey folks! Marvel at this. Would expect more from larger states, but it's always NJ. https://t.co/vqWV6AxZlX
Lots of Jersey here today! Denis, K-12 Math Supervisor from Chatham NJ.
Morning
Bill from Missouri.
Good morning Glad to see you are back on land!
exactly. But in the US & UK I see policy becoming more fear-producing & less trusting in teachers to teach, grow & lead
So true! This is why I love Instructional Coaching programs -teachers helping teachers in a non-evaluative way
. - teacher choice & collaborative inquiry should be the spirit of PD - thanks for your thoughts on this!
just had that convo yesterday ... How to seek input, ideas, share and move to action with timeliness
Q3: What are some examples of teacher leadership (in your school, district, etc.)?
All valid concerns & no quick fixes. People, schools are complex. What works in one place mightn't in others
A2: T Leaders need to actually have some control. Otherwise lots of talking about talking about probs/changes but little action.
Bill - you are right. Leaders must regularly and meaningfully listen to educators! https://t.co/JHZnf7PVcJ
We must find ways to LISTEN to teachers. From short scheduled (consistent) meetings to anonymous exit slip surveys- take pulse!
A2 leadership needs to be seen as meeting challenges, not position
Brad I hope you give a test drive as it will lead you to new discoveries.
We know the T job can feel lonely sometimes (it's just you in that classroom!) Same's true of admin job! T leaders = KEY.
Don't try to read everything! Skim through and make sure you're using Tweetdeck so it can be in 1 column.
I'm the OG at shaking things up. It's always for the kiddos, so yes, it never feels wrong!
The continued perception (perhaps accurate) of pecking order is another challenge for t-leaders. We're shepherds, not sheep.
A2 This is crazy since if T's had more authority over this, we could be creative-already our voices have been heard a bit.
Its a step in the right direction. Hopefully it's not filled with red tape and tons of paperwork
A2 challenges? The thought you need some sort of blessing or title bestowed upon you by Admin. Be the light for others
A3 T led PD courses/sessions, after school mindfulness/yoga program. Definitely an area my dist needs to improve.
I'm just on my phone tonight. :) I get to what I can. Then check the Storify later.
A2: It's one thing to give teacher leader a title (committee chair). Another thing to give him autonomy to lead within that role.
A2: My biggest challenge is that it takes away Ts planning time and often over works the TLs if I involve them too much
I define initiative, implementation, follow through, share with others to pull them in. Keep it simple.
A3: One example when a T asks me: "This might not work, but can I try it?" The Ans is always Yes! then let's reflect on it together
Tests were shortened to one time rather than two--that's better. Also it's not just T's, parents/Ss need voice too.
more than smooths; proactive leadership might be only way to truly evolve edu; fixes are short term
Thinking for yourself is the only way to do this work. Waiting for the yes from on-high is silliness.
A2) 3Ts: no Time to build Trusting relationships from Top down
A2: Sole focus on compliance, ego and lack of trust are major challenges in schools to new leadership.
Great point about an individual journey. We have to know how/why/where can lead! Sometimes that opp. isn't given.
Yes. Teacher voice in creating Mission and Vision statement is crucial. https://t.co/GnfFx5frAY
Ditto. Goals, Strategies, and Mission statements need to be built from the ground up - not handed down from "On High"
I love quiet leaders. I am one. I hold a leadership role because I stumbled into it, not because I craved attention.
A2 it could be the trust and confidence that there is tr leadership among the staff. It is abt mentoring and instruction.
Agree, and we can only hope, friend. https://t.co/cfSNWjrK5I
Its a step in the right direction. Hopefully it's not filled with red tape and tons of paperwork
A2. Create various committees that will allow Ts 2 participate & help provide input into decisions for school. Will become the norm
A2 Also requires boldness from above. Leaders must hire the right people, let them excel & not fear them. https://t.co/bNvUYS8Fvl
Time, IMHO is the greatest issue. Intentional seeking out of time to give Ts, hacking the time dearth: essential
A3: Ts who serve as mentors to new faculty, serve on committees for strategic planning, serve as department chairs, help Ts learn.
Slept in, spring break day 1. Time to catch up with
A3: We have a committee that is working with the principal on a state pilot to create a homegrown curriculum.
How would this look in a school?
I think the key word is listen. Some listen to respond and not to understand. There is a difference.
My room parents are my biggest allies!
Dennis, as much as I agree--words matter. Rather than a TL, I like a shared leadership model, all working as team.
Agree! https://t.co/3yAaH3qb2K
more than smooths; proactive leadership might be only way to truly evolve edu; fixes are short term
A2 Teacher leadership isn't competitions! It is about sharing one's expertise & supporting colleagues~Learning from one another!
Go Canada! 🙂 Don't believe there is an actual req in NY. Not a fan I believe in theory AND prctc
Here's one way my school has allowed teachers to lead (our development of a coaching model for growth) https://t.co/VY2WfmLQTT
A2: I find that some teachers don't want to focus on bigger ideas out of the classroom. Sometimes the same teachers always step up
Yes, I've only been exposed to loud T leaders... not good. https://t.co/t4WaYvSVef
You can starve waiting for answers from up high
A3: Ts sitting on joint leadership committees with admins (Ex. BLT and evals.
Easier said than done. IMO, school culture plays a big role. Agreed that you need T's willing to advocate!
A3: I'm new to my scl, and haven't quite figured all of that out yet, but there's a team of edus who do field research on STEAM.
A2: There's a HUGE different between leading people and managing things.
Harder...perhaps. Impossible...no. What I can do is model excellence and lead by example.
A3: Teacher specialist, Teacher Development Specialist.
Yes. As admin get out of office.B in the buildings meeting and talking to Ts and Ss. Feel for the culture in bldg.
A3chers who engage and share via Twitter offer diff kind of prof leadership and learning opp to and with peers
Agree, Bill. Important to do periodic culture checks with our team to make sure they feel supported and engaged
true - if teachers had more influence, they would development better ways to measure learning
Yet Kelly, there are so many diff ways to lead--that's why I like shared leadership model.
Know educator who isn't connected yet or need to take your twitter skills to the next level? Out next week:
https://t.co/deypxgM5bK
A3. So many: District Instructional Leadership Team: Focus on school culture, PLCs, mentoring & instructional strategies.
Of course! Love the idea that it's harder to fire a group. Norma Rae, your table is ready!
language is such an interesting thing! Teaching is 85% female and we all tend to default to male pronouns. :)
3A) Rock Star Teachers facilitating 1/2 day reading trainings in the building for peers.
Good morning. Shaelynn from Iowa. Checking in this morning. Great topic on Teacher Leadership
All Ts have strengths. Let them PD theirs to the staff
I have always figured there is nothing worse than keeping a possibly game changing idea that may positively impact Ss to myself.
Keep us posted, Sam, if you hear anything. Thank You!
A3 teacher getting involved in EdCamps!!!
Oh my word, I wouldn't get a thing done!

todays family needs to work with the teacher. Admin should facilitate this relationship constantly

live with no regrets ... Would rather go out head held high advocating for kids and teachers than stay
It sure does. Another reason why formal school leadership needs to cultivate leadership in others. https://t.co/JCuNdazeoh

The divided focus of many committees or separate initiatives dilutes effort and delays progress. https://t.co/1j2cqiKhV5
A2: Schools with too many committees. Looks good on the surface but sometimes lots of discussion and little action...creates noise.
A3) Teachers lead committees, grade/ subject leaders, train faculty from info network mtgs.Share any new learnings that are helpful.
A3: Admin support to try new things, attend workshops/conferences and share new ideas with staff at meetings
...all the more reason Ts from outside the good ole boy network must be that example of change. Hard, but needed work.

A3 opportunities for Ts to join in design groups with common student achievement & process goals
I don't understand why we separate ourselves from the children.

A2: Time is always a barrier, but the greatest obstacle = systems. Teachers must be given real opportunities to lead.
A3- TL allows to take on school needs in collaborative ways, places Ts in expert roles & enables them to peer mentor
DOE developed, but how do they follow through?! Never saw it in my district😣 https://t.co/ZIJcuZcPNZ

A4: By informally mentoring other Ts, sharing how they practice leadership, being transparent in their practices
A3 committee chairs, gr team lead, resource, support are formal leadership roles. Informal - Twitter, coffee and hallway chats
I think when you put too much on "roles" you may not allow some to share about something they have particular insight on.
intentionality is key - just abt every decision we make involves time as resource - shifts 2 evolve work take time
Yes! Extra bonus: I enjoy it! Its fun & it challenges me, each & every year, curriculum always changing
A4: By encouraging and inspiring them to become leaders as well! Everyone has something to contribute!!!

Do your committee or gr team allow for feedback or are they just pushing message from higher up?
PERFECTLY-put, . I heart Twitter (because of !) but it doesn't let me say everything, every time I tweet!
To give T leaders time, start w/ releasing Ts from nonessential "duties" & assigning them to meaningful ones to invite dialogue
Both are needed think Formal - Informal mentoring.
I worked in MA for 17 yrs. Well versed in PLC, but our admin did not help to support this at all. https://t.co/7z7jxPfvlI
That's putting the onus on women and teachers of color, as usual, to do the work of white male leaders.

Yes! All about the trust. Hire talent and get out of the way.
This is important distinction. Crafting your messages well is also integral to good leadership.
A3: 1/ Sometimes potential leaders get swallowed by cliques & committees. If that's your school, go grassroots.
Like this, Heather. Broadening the positive impact beyond the school campus
but it doesn't mean we can't try to see beyond our own pov or beyond how things are.
A4: by creating a culture that mirrors what those teacher leaders are doing in their classrooms. Obviously, just on a larger scale.
Q4: Simple--encourage risk-taking and support, support, support.
A4 Delegate, delegate, delegate. Even the smallest thing could make someone feel like a star.

Q3 let Ts lead professional learning also! Very powerful
A4: By providing forums and opportunities to share their ideas and expertise.
I think that over emphasis on committees make decisions may not allow that 1 quiet voice that has great idea to share.
Probably by insisting for more diversity in traditional leadership roles...cultivate a culture of trust and change.
Yes! Develop a culture that ensure constant improvement and open and honest relationships! https://t.co/feuXIcpovZ
A4: by creating a culture that mirrors what those teacher leaders are doing in their classrooms. Obviously, just on a larger scale.
A4: Leaders need to collaborate and trust teachers.

Not trying to argue, just didn't have leaders who followed that plan to lift us(teachers) up and propel us as we should.
A4: Today's leader can empower teacher leaders by giving them a real voice in decision making.
More: https://t.co/B3ooc6sWJr
I like ur use of "real voice"; sometimes Ts are asked to join only 2 realize the "end results" are already decided
A4 Leaders can best empower teachers by
1) getting out of the way
2) providing vision for states, districts
3) educating public
Easy to overlook voices that aren't the loudest. We must develop protocols to ensure all voices are heard.
A4: Give Inspiration, Autonomy, and Support to teachers, and then get the heck out of the way. (BTW, Ts should do the same for Ss.)
So true Ashley, sometimes even leaders aren't empowered since they don't have what they need to build shared leadership

You got that right Letitia
A4: Leaders empower Ts by building trust. Including Ts in decision making process & value their input.

Schools are filled with opportunities that will both benefit the school & provide a leadership opportunity for those that want it.
A4: Offer different opportunities for Ts to step up, be open/encouraging to new ideas, recommend Ts to diversify leadership pool
encourage risk taking by praising teachers that have done it
A4 I like the idea of ongoing idea systems--learned about this years ago and have always desired it in schools.
A4: We talk about empowering our students. Let's use those similar strategies to empower teacher leaders. https://t.co/PsL6bngbt4
A4: discuss the vision, goal, and resources together so the objective can be clear. Work together and not against. Less friction.
Igniting Teacher Leadership
great point. which is why we constantly put ourselves out there to learn something from someone.
A4: Relationships. It all starts there. Well, the opportunists will show up no matter what; might do a poor job, but arrive. 😂🙄
Make sure Ts r a part of big decisions ie handbooks, discipline policies, budgeting etc
A4: Protect and value teachers time so they can use it to prepare and work with students.
A4 Give them time for brainstorming, implementation, & reflection. Too often the tyranny of the urgent wraps us in its chains.
A4: By listening. Leaders that listen open themselves & the school to a myriad of powerful ideas. https://t.co/I7aFoXXDlU
We just started w/ it this past year. Came up w/ a 4 step process. Would love to share-if you're interested DM me.
A2) 1 challenge is a psychology of division. Some Ts have an innate resistance to leadership...embodying an "us vs them" mentality.
A4: Give us time - could do a lot with a little
I think that shows true leadership.
A4: Admin can include T's in decision making for the school and encourage collaboration. It shows trust and gives ownership.
A4: Teacher leaders are inspired when they feel trusted & are given time to share, practice, & explore.
In my district teachers lead instructional rounds, serve as coaches, are given a voice in a wide range of key areas.
I'm sorry that was your experience. I have found to be key at helping us rethink teacher leadership.
A4. Leaders need to allow teacher leaders to be creative, and to fail... And to celebrate failures, & learn from them
Develop trust, not protocols, and then you have to reach out and find them at times. It is not easy.
A3: Ts have major voice in my school: help set agendas, mtgs, run assemblies, student interventions, schoo improv efforts,
I would hope those admin. are then taking on other opportunities to contribute. https://t.co/oaJhWQT0DN
A2: Sometimes administrators are looking for someone else to do their evaluations and job.
agreed and for those Ts who need a bit more direction, offer options also
then suggest it - you are very good at this work - many admin are not
A4) To develop leadership you have to share leadership. Give teachers opportunities to run with their ideas.
A3) We have a teacher-driven leadership team at our junior high. Ts design challenges, create innovative electives, etc.
A4: Give the opportunity to lead, trust them, let them be creative & encourage them to be innovative https://t.co/vEcJT7Zt48
Yet, important that T's, parents, and students are part of that vision setting in real, doable ways.
LOVE this! You both should sign up for leadership email/quote of day if not already!
A4. Giving them the opportunity to lead out change. For example, our Monthly "Breakfast Club" teachers new to bldg.
We have changed our PD to mirror style esp. for tech integration; very successful. Ts teaching Ts https://t.co/tnXg8QopDK
Q3 let Ts lead professional learning also! Very powerful
A4 encourage creativity w/ yes 2 new ideas, find youth & offer opps 2 engage, walk & talk, use soc media 2 connect
agree time to explore best practice, particularly practical advice on core purpose teaching / learning / assessment
A4: Love how Twitter allows T's to connect beyond districts and let leadership shine on a national stage!!!
A4: By recognizing potential, believing in them, being a role model, offering support, acknowledging successes!
A4: Someone saw something in you, now it's your turn to see that in others. Mentor! Nurture! Empower!
Conducting digital surveys BEFORE meetings makes a world of difference. Starting point is problem solving
Right, Steve. We must know our team members and solicit their input to show we value their perpsectives
also a great way to identify leaders. Only leaders give up a Saturday to learn!
A3: another example is the Ts that are always working every min of the day for extra events to make the community better.
Sometimes voice is invited w/no lead time, no viable structure--needs to be accessible.
When you see education as a tool for change, it becomes obvious why it is constantly underfunded and undercut.
A3 Training should meet us where we are. We all have different skills and backgrounds.
so I struggle with the tension of signal boosting in a noisy room. Does it require some voices be silenced?
agreed. ppl will work with you if they feel they have a stake in the outcome.
Even having teacher committees to recruit, select and a part of interview for new hires
I like how you said "build ownership" and not "get buy-in" Sounds more personal where other sounds like throwing money.
A5: Admin might not have $ to support ts but they do have other ways to allow ts to lead, perhaps giving them time & resources
A4: Sometimes it's a long game. Leaders, and the choices they make, often take time. Let them grow.
Yes! School communities that RUN together, LEARN together!
Our sys built in time for PLCs and more planning time--valuable. More shared planning periods too.
We elect to scaffold our own professional learning, which always results in a unique recipe for success.
Leadership 101:
Get over yourself - it's not about you.
If extrinsic motivators are your guide, you'll be wrong every time.
A4: Simply by being a leader vs. a manager/boss. Shared vision, shared empowerment, shared greatness. https://t.co/oswsQsaag4
A4 If you want T input, be ready to consider it. Don't come w your mind made up already as a token that T input was considered.
A1 In order to create a community of leaders in youth, educators must model leadership first, then encourage it.
A4: Admins that partner w/TLs in planning & presenting strengthen campus view of that person& encourage Ts to work w/&follow them.
Yes as it should. It's all good, I've moved on. Hoping to find a my place in supportive school. https://t.co/LarRz46Tpo
I'm sorry that was your experience. I have found to be key at helping us rethink teacher leadership.
so true "swallowed by" or shut out by... either way potential leaders are lost. https://t.co/weh6aL7Lnx
A3: 1/ Sometimes potential leaders get swallowed by cliques & committees. If that's your school, go grassroots.
A4- Create a culture where TL's expertise is welcomed & celebrated- that they are valuable to schools' instructional goals
This is HUGE. So important2have selection committee to help bring in individuals with similar vision/goals https://t.co/oiGlIWZdkK
Even having teacher committees to recruit, select and a part of interview for new hires
We just started using this model. We came up w/ a 4 step process to implement. Would love to share! :-) DM if interested.
A4 Empowerment still needs measurable objectives. The point and purpose of PD, etc. How does it effect them, Ss, school
A4: Allow Ts to create. If they create it, they will own it, if they own it, they will defend it.
yes! teachers are an amazing breed of character!
Good distinction - trust over protocols. Just make sure we are leveraging all voices!
A4: Being there for each other. Asking reflective ?s. Celebrate Collaborating together. Coaching. Noticing impact in the learning.
A5: Teacher leaders should be the voice of classroom T. When decisions are made they should represent both parties
Wish we had more transparent, regular communication though--ongoing inclusive conversation.
If school leaders empower teachers to be leaders, teachers will learn how to empower students to be leaders. Trickle down effect.
A4) Simply give them a platform / opportunity to lead. Allow them to fail and work them through it.
A4 leaders can best empower teacher leaders by
4) providing support for every child
5) providing broad community structures
RT NA_Dellsey: MsReidReads jcordery I don't understand why we separate ourselves from the children.
More: https://t.co/B3ooc6sWJr
AND pay for childcare and/or give up time w/ family so they can learn on Saturday.
A4. Leaders need to model the processes they desire to see Ts lead w/ in classrooms.
We do that in part--a teacher team helps hire new Ts.
Check out book Igniting Teacher Leadership: How do I empower my teachers to lead and learn? https://t.co/CVfE91voVq
I love hearing your POV (agree with it, in fact). Also, thinking about how mine resonates, !
A4: Listen, build relationship, trust & focus on stud learning. Those natural leaders will emerge who want to push school mission.
A4: By sharing responsibility - let teachers know how much stronger we are when we work together
OK
Going to bed. Want a good night sleep as going to 6am Easter Sunday Mass on the mountain in morn. Sunrises behind the alter.
Yes! https://t.co/q7pJbjhF93
A4: Someone saw something in you, now it's your turn to see that in others. Mentor! Nurture! Empower!
Almost any important decision we make together grows us as a team, contributes to our practice.
Examples are creating a wellness program or leading middle states and many more
Agreed! When our new principal started, & allowed Ts to run w/ their ideas it boosted morale & led to some great changes
A4 I think school culture is huge. You got that, you don't feel need to empower Ts; they'll empower each other
If you highlight the positives and the amazing aspects of each teacher, chances are... Leaders will emerge. Team effort baby!
A4 empower teachers! Admin step back let them take risks. Only coach when needed. If it fails oh well try again!
A4: How about a completely TEACHER created agenda from time to time? Staff meeting? District or grade level PLC?
Some systems have too many leaders that don't work w/Ss however--there needs to be a good balance.
Committees need to know what the others are doing...need to have a common goal as well.
Enjoying some coffee, and a little biscotti. Good morning!
Sometimes I crave to return to classroom but I'm not interested in playing a game of inferiority.
Nope-but we started w/ the motivated growth mindset T's & had very supportive admin. Now almost all are on board!
Looking for ideas so that all Ts interested in collaborating could "attend." Need more lead learners at the table.
agree create design and build together a diff approach than input and buy-in
Yes, Universities, school leaders (including teachers), districts, & other stakeholders must carve out time2work together
Sounds like leaders are willing to make sacrifices to learn & grow so they can better lead
A4 Emotions!! Get Ts to feel empowered, motivated, inspired, we can't be stopped.
I think great leaders try to make others greater than themselves
Q5 What are some ways in which administrators and teacher leaders can work together?
And be humble in accepting and making changes w/TL feedback.
A4 leaders empower teacher leaders by
6) asking each teacher what s/he needs
7) creating internal structures 4 effective communcatn
As says: we have to start with the WHY https://t.co/K0xzYIoujK
A2: one issue is that without formal plan in place, many don't know what a TL role should look like
RT Q5 What are some ways in which administrators and teacher leaders can work together?
I really like that "develop trust not protocols".
A5. Admins can provide opportunities. Admin can listen to where Ts want/need to lead. Admin need to support T leadership.
Yes, and I believe most people working in schools should have regular responsibility with Ss, this keeps you in the game.
https://t.co/JaPnkxkpVm
leading what ? Leading How ? Leading for ? Develop and sustainable the leadership in the global education
Agreed! https://t.co/OxgVAENzvs
Yes! Develop a culture that ensure constant improvement and open and honest relationships! https://t.co/feuXIcpovZ
A4: by creating a culture that mirrors what those teacher leaders are doing in their classrooms. Obviously, just on a larger scale.
Teachers on interview comm. is a great opportunity for reflection "Hmm... How would I have answered that question?"
It's the reality we live Letitia!
& only leaders pay out of pocket to learn. So many places don't have a budget for outside PD :-(
Favorite quote, favorite human. START WITH WHY is most impactful idea I've come across yet. A5 Committee
One of the most important parts of the model is deciding collectively what to learn that day https://t.co/LPy4xQoLSU
We have changed our PD to mirror style esp. for tech integration; very successful. Ts teaching Ts https://t.co/tnXg8QopDK
Q3 let Ts lead professional learning also! Very powerful
Staff meetings should be the result of collaboration between TLs and Ps. Think about the purpose of meeting - Ts&Ps!
Kudos to , and and the CNYLDP program for doing exactly this. https://t.co/CIW7iXMqfr
Q4 Give them a voice, give them opportunities, give them a purpose, and give them support & guidance. https://t.co/X9ncmWC98y
Q4 How can today's leaders empower teacher leaders?
Thanks for joining from Australia
https://t.co/e8nbHtlFIP
OK
Going to bed. Want a good night sleep as going to 6am Easter Sunday Mass on the mountain in morn. Sunrises behind the alter.
A4: I'd love to hear how districts are highlighting their T leaders via social media. I'm thinking a lot about that model!
We had a team ldr like that, I referred to her as our Magic Johnson, she made everyone "on the court" better teachers
If Ts were trusted, there would be a path to remain in classroom with students and also have impact over policy. Much needed bridge
A5 It starts w/identifying vision, goals, culture-asking what's important to our collective learning team?
I like the two way conduit as much as possible. Although, there are times when a msg just needs to be delivered.
A5: As & Ts can work together by valuing each others' contributions, listening to ideas, & encouraging innovation.
Leadership from the middle https://t.co/Zpf5VhrZgC
A4. By leading beside them or leading from behind. Create a culture of shared leadership. Allow Ts to lead around area of passion.
Personal motivation is the strongest type!
GRRRRRRREAT chat So insightful, can't even tweet, just reading and faving!!!
A4: Collaboration requires:
Trust: shared mission & vision
Equity: all perspectives valued
Respect: for expertise & experience
A5: Critical for Ts and admins to work together to develop school culture that cultivates T leaders.
A5: As & Ts should work together to develop codes of conduct, discipline consequences, go over rules, address issues in classrooms.
about how I'm beginning to feel as well.
A5 Next, what do we need to do to collectively reach our goals? How can we help each other, restructure.
Notice it's a continuum. People can go in both directions. Must be careful.
A5: Admin and teacher leaders should work together daily - it all starts with trust leading to empowerment
not just a common goal but if they can both be rewarded in some way shape or form in the same way, that would help too
My wife says her principal often asks, "What can I do?"
A5: Allow teachers to visit classrooms, share, reflect & celebrate. Teacher leaders aren't always outspoken. Visit them in class.
A5 Our SIT team is grade rep Ts and they are the leaders who meet monthly to make the change. Equality with admin
What if everyone in the school lead an after school club focused on something they are passionate about...imagine....
A5 Value and respect is critical--we have to understand it takes all of us to achieve well in schools.
We tried that 2 but it never seemed to come out the way we hoped. It wasn't until we empowered T's that we saw a change.
A5 Admins must be present in the bldg when there ISN'T crisis, discipline, etc. Should be out front as much as possible to observe.
One admin who is doing a great job of empowering Ts and sharing leadership: .
silos of schls & central deprtmnts barrier creating synergy of learning & leading together focus on tearing down those
A5: Meetings should be conversations and not lectures.
Or at least work with others to continue to build the profession in a positive way! Great leaders build great leaders!
A5: share responsibility. This creates a shared vision where everyone understands the goal. Conduct walk through checkups of plan.
Great teachers inspire those around them. A rising tide and boats and such. It's the rocks who object.
Yes! Can we set up a PLC mtg w your school? Let's talk!
Great point. I hate to see good Ts leaving the classroom so they can be a leader. Newsflash: They already were!
Administrators & Teachers should always strive to work together. Drop the titles until they're needed
Families and students are also integral parts of every school's team--they need voice and choice too.
Yes, This sort of team work, planning, reflection is critical-must be ongoing, not just 1 event https://t.co/z8qCvHXAtH
A5 It starts w/identifying vision, goals, culture-asking what's important to our collective learning team?
That's a tough one Dani! Are your admin supportive?
A4: When leaders are inclined to ask more than they answer.
A5) Teachers should be involved in strategic planning - How can we do this? How can we do this better?
It belongs to the author of Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking
A5: Admin can support, listen, pop in, ask questions, collaborate, compliment, let Ts take risks
A5: and teachers can work together on district themes and goals, implementation of & PD needs of district
A5: Brainstorm, build and implement goals and projects together that will meet campus wide initiatives.
GREAT question. I'd love to hear about this, too!
https://t.co/ack6Q8AlWo
A4: I'd love to hear how districts are highlighting their T leaders via social media. I'm thinking a lot about that model!
Indeed! THIS (IMO) is the fundamental key to unlocking greatness in education.
A5: Everyday, when would they not want too?
A5 Design professional development and in-service time together, then be willing to think outside the box. https://t.co/obqIf4KQQd
Q5 What are some ways in which administrators and teacher leaders can work together?
whoa…. things just got a little dark. Underscores the importance to create grassroots change
A5: Admin & teachers can literally work together w/in learning environs if they're not stretched too thin by over assigned duties.
Exactly. Input is NOT shared leadership. Clarify at start: I want your input vs. I want you to decide.
A5: As admin, make sure you let staff know how valued they are for the work they do
Q5 Admin needs to know their staff (strengths, interests) T need to have confidence and share learning formally or informally
Watch for Hacking Leadership coming out SOON from

Principals need support too--sometimes the overall structure of a sys does not well support principals.
is now trending WorldWide, ranking 40 [13:11]
A5: Together create faculty PD & meetings, plan for each year, problem solving, Admin being transparent w/T's goes along way!
A5: Collaborative Leadership Team structure lets us work together on schedule, policies, budget, and day-to-day happenings.
A5: my first answer would be: on everything. There should be very little done w/o collaboration. Is this realistic?
A5: Developing a common understanding on educational initiatives.
A4 Leaders empower teacher leaders w vision.
Schools/districts need effective structures (int/ext) to support Ts & help Ss succeed
work in such a way to use strengths of all concerned
A5: Admins sometimes need to realize that some teacher leaders need support with building relationships with Ts.
We should continually work to empower teacher leaders in our buildings.
A5 My A is never in my room. Has no idea what my Ss and I are up to. It kind of hurts.

Failing with support is important for learning and growth at all levels. https://t.co/iIYMgIXIcf
A4. Leaders need to allow teacher leaders to be creative, and to fail... And to celebrate failures, & learn from them
Exactly. When we remove Ts from Ss for leadership roles, they inevitably lose contact w/ very work that made em relevant.
T's in my school loved this book. https://t.co/euvPwMClTk
It belongs to the author of Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking

A5: As & Ts should work together to develop codes of conduct, discipline consequences, go over rules, address issues in classrooms.
A5: make time for them, create goals and a shared vision for the school together. Leaders spread your gospel, but need inspiration
We have school and district hashtags. We also just started a form for community to recognize thru website.
This could be amazing, but the sad thing is, many Ts won't unless they are compensated.
A5) Redesigning learning to include authentic & global opportunities; Ts and admin can work together here
Good planning starts about 9 mos before the school year, lead time is integral to good leadership.
Oh, how I wish the world knew that! Input is the new black. Asking for it is becoming trite.
A5: The possibilities are endless. Each T has different skills & experiences to contribute.
A3: Our thinking of teacher leadership is too shallow if we define it as "Chairing a Committee"
Important to recognize: Is this my space? Lead in your space even if it's not official.
also allowing each group, teachers and admins, their own decision making power in these common goals builds a strong team
A5: Big question - how do we as school admin encourage district leaders to share leadership diplomacy is important

Yes! My goal everyday is to visit every classroom once a day.
we use FB, Instagram, and YouTube so our community can see the great things our staff and students do.
A5. Admin & Ts can collaborate w/ each other in committees. Admin can also allow Ts to take risks around school & in classrooms.
A5) teachers and administration can work together by following up on PD put in place by your district!
I agree w/that to a degree, but sometimes real change and leadership requires more collective change.
...or even, shared decision-making on ___ (fill in the blank with anything that enables more student success).
Set a positive school community where teachers, admins, families and the community feel connected and supported.

Students can also be amazing teacher leaders. They can present PD, teach younger students, and be a positive role model for others.
This is a HUGE issues--sometimes info is kept away from T's--creates unnecessary need for repetition, time lost, more.

I love that quote "scores a symptoms" POWERFUL!
agreed. along with the other million things that need to be done that day....
having that community connection is so important. A lot of times, it seems that Admin have to be involved in that area
A6: All leaders should be trained in Cognitive Coaching. I used it as a TAP Master Teacher and it works.
I think there can be many right answers here.
Teacher Leadership: Give learning experiences to others so that you both grow to be more than you were. https://t.co/tTnZXEvtbb
What happens during PD? Are admin part of the learning? Everyone should be learning/growing. https://t.co/yy5r8HEgh5
Time is key, Carve out time for peer observations, sharing in fac mtgs, and to work together.
AWESOME quote! So powerful and inspiring - It's going on my idea wall at work :)
Right, Karen. Important for Ts to see the strategies others use to increase their instr toolkit to meet Ss needs
2/2 Then use the remaining time of faculty meeting for everyone to make 5-10 positive phone calls home Discuss later & share!
A3: Admin morning greetings.Walk the hall and make sure everyone is armed to rock the day.Should not have to hunt them down in AM.

. I'm headed to 4/8-9 & am doing an IGNITE session on our 4 step PD delivery process-The RETI method
I think Black people waste their time fighting for power and influence in white spaces. That includes schools.
They really do. Admins are the face of the school and have to do the PR work to bring the community in
A5: Plan PD together, guide staff reflective practice together
So true! We need to bond in the good times so we're at each other's sides in the hard times.
Or how about: ...AND that help enable positive change within a district's culture?
A5 Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment practice must be driven by teacher leaders.
Great convo
Cutting out early
Have a great weekend and Happy Easter.
That's where choosing your battles come in--what are you willing to really fight for if necessary.
Yes it is. We make time for our priorities. Usually Urgent ones. Not necessarily Strategic.
Simple. If you are not working to improve student learning then you should not be working together.
It's not horrible to have so much independence, but the odd "atta girl" wouldn't kill me either!
Purpose of school mtgs is student benefit. Admin reg. meets AWAY from sch. staff, why can't Ts dictate some of their own?
So, people must recognize sometimes system's the problem, not them, "Where can I have impact," then do
A5. Admin and Ts can collaborate on schedule, curriculum, protocols, developing discipline guidelines & positive Ss incentives.
tchers R creative, solution finders who design create invent build analyze engineer w skill
Otherwise, one simply becomes an apologist for White supremacist spaces. Schools included.
A6: Book shares or highlighting leadership articles are good opportunities ignite leadership.
Totally! Great idea for promoting that teacher leadership,
I am w/you all the way. I'm not one of the frowners but, hate that they miss out on so much.
Would love to see this happen! Can get state BOEs on-board? They are the shovel; we're just the pile. :)
https://t.co/ZqVbZIZqn5
Principals, if the initiative is important- give teachers the time to do it! Take something off their plate.
The admins need to be a part of staff development (present& learning too), but not always "in front" https://t.co/MmJUHhO6K5
What happens during PD? Are admin part of the learning? Everyone should be learning/growing. https://t.co/yy5r8HEgh5
Time is key, Carve out time for peer observations, sharing in fac mtgs, and to work together.
For me it's cultural proficiency--we need to work together to make our whole school inviting for all.
Agree, 1000%. Make decisions based on your best people.
For sure! My Academic Dean was in my room way more. Is there someone else you can look to?
Yes I agree. We're launching our 1st "Student Digital Showcase" next month! https://t.co/uOloAv2fSM
Students can also be amazing teacher leaders. They can present PD, teach younger students, and be a positive role model for others.
A5 If administrators have trust and use teachers in a appreciative way that says a lot. relationships must be built and strengthen
Teacher leaders must pass down those tasks that trained them for leadership, and gain growth mindset tasks https://t.co/x40pdnkwdV
Principals, if the initiative is important- give teachers the time to do it! Take something off their plate.
I see it daily in friends who are Black, and in positions of leadership. They become apologists.
"Leadership is not about being in charge. Leadership is about taking care of those in your charge."
Example--we have to work together to share ideas about how to uplift every Ss.
I'm so sorry for you Dani! This is when it's time 2 band together w/ fellow Ts-start creating your own PD opportunities
We need to praise teachers for taking risks and provide them with ongoing support. https://t.co/VT27ARBXUz

Love that graphic! Powerful!
the benefits of teachers opening up classrooms are motivating, inspiring, and promoting collaboration.
For sure! I've had a much better exp. with our new P. He's way more hands-on w/Ts.
What better way to equip the front lines, right? https://t.co/jbA2yVEziA
A5 Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment practice must be driven by teacher leaders.
It happens frequently- luckily LOVE of students is the reason we drive to be best & learn, not admin! https://t.co/uMWic59aaR
A5 My A is never in my room. Has no idea what my Ss and I are up to. It kind of hurts.
Yet people are quick to judge when someone complains rather than listen--often an imp. story.
that's awesome! Hope that goes well. Excited? Nervous?
They forget what being a T is like. I s'pose we should walk in their shoes on occasion, too.
yes indeed but when quiet leaders talk, they are pertinent and other teachers do listen!
A5: ask: how does what your are learning & sharing with others impact how kids learn? Always connect back to students.
What? We have to take something off of the pile? I'm Confused. :)
I really like the idea of everyone making positive phone calls home! I send postcards home to Ss each week https://t.co/warvZNzGfX
2/2 Then use the remaining time of faculty meeting for everyone to make 5-10 positive phone calls home Discuss later & share!

That would be so awesome ! Go for it and start one, they would love it ! https://t.co/qhEqVRvDZN
What if everyone in the school lead an after school club focused on something they are passionate about...imagine....
A5: Cognitive Coaching guides Ts and doesn't impose the coach's method of teaching. It improves the Ts instructional choice
A5: Admins and Teacher leaders can do amazing things with PD in schools. Ts need, want and crave the learning
I do really well w a mentor, but they are hard to find. I'm looking in other bldgs, actually...
Just like students will do anything for a teacher that loves them...teachers will do anything for a leader who loves them too.
A6: 1 idea to ignite T leadership is facilitate credibility & leadership with other staff. Provide backup & then let them flourish

Sometimes faculty meetings ignite this too.
we got to take risks too. If principals don't, chances are that teachers won't!
Love this.If it can be written+clearly read in email or FacMtgNotes, that is where it should be.
What grade? Are you on a team? It's not cool to feel unanchored.

If you could lead an after school program based on your passion, what would it be? Mine would be all about books!
Our union has room for teacher leadership--impacts what T's can do, supports.
Right, Will. The process is iterative. We want to make sure we have identified all components before proceeding
We highlight the positives that are worth sharing. There's a lot worth sharing.
Except for developing relationships it is the most important thing we do.
Hey , what are your favorite books on leadership?
I think respecting where they are is huge! We are all at different points in our journey & that's OK! https://t.co/b83eenIbN9

Have the courage to encourage and empower others to take initiative.
We actually had a mini during our last conference day. Teacher's LOVED it!
