  • mikepaul Sep 28 @ 8:17 PM EDT
Q1: Reimagining school culture is a hot topic in education now. If you could design a school's culture, where would you begin? #kyedchat
  • SherriRMc Sep 28 @ 8:19 PM EDT
Sherri, ELA teacher from Lexington. Favorite memory from high school--being the first Ss in the new high school. #KYEdChat
  • mikepaul Sep 28 @ 8:19 PM EDT
A1: For me, culture is all about creating an environment that Ss WANT to be surrounded by. School should be a place kids want to RUN to, not away from #kyedchat
  • vekazee Sep 28 @ 8:20 PM EDT

  • DwynneEdu Sep 28 @ 8:21 PM EDT
A1: I would begin with staff culture #kyedchat
  • JeremyMcGintyKY Sep 28 @ 8:22 PM EDT

  • mikepaul Sep 28 @ 8:23 PM EDT

    In reply to @DwynneEdu
  • JeremyMcGintyKY Sep 28 @ 8:23 PM EDT
Schools should be a home away from home. Decorate the school like you would a Home. Put a lot of thought into everything! #kyedchat
  • LaurELowe Sep 28 @ 8:23 PM EDT
Culture for me is fostering an environment when students feel comfortable to try and either be successful or fail and it be okay. #kyedchat
  • mikepaul Sep 28 @ 8:24 PM EDT
I am lucky to have the ability to do a lot of this in my district. I feel for teachers that don't have many options #kyedchat
    In reply to @SherriRMc
  • vekazee Sep 28 @ 8:25 PM EDT
    A1: A collaborative approach to developing a well rounded student/citizen. #kyedchat
  • mikepaul Sep 28 @ 8:25 PM EDT
So true! For many of our kids, school is already more of a "home" than what they have at home. How can we build on that? #kyedchat
    In reply to @JeremyMcGintyKY
  • mikepaul Sep 28 @ 8:26 PM EDT
YES! Our kids have be know that it's ok to fail. So many times they've been made to believe getting the right answer is the most important part. Not true at all! #kyedchat

  • mikepaul Sep 28 @ 8:27 PM EDT
Q2 on the way in 60 seconds! #kyedchat
  • JeremyMcGintyKY Sep 28 @ 8:27 PM EDT
By letting the kids know that they are loved each and every day. It is so important that the kids know that you care about them. #KyEdChat

This. This right here. When they know you care, they will move mountains in their lives and rise to be what we know they can be #kyedchat

Q2: How would your ideal school culture affect students and teachers? #kyedchat
  • vekazee Sep 28 @ 8:29 PM EDT
I'm in a dif environment than some. We need to develop relationships so they trust us to look out for them be their best self. #kyedchat
  • vekazee Sep 28 @ 8:31 PM EDT
Individualized collaboration-can't be too overwhelming for student OR teacher though. #kyedchat
  • mikepaul Sep 28 @ 8:33 PM EDT
Sidebar: what do you think today's release of test scores is doing to school cultures around the state? #kyedchat
  • SherriRMc Sep 28 @ 8:33 PM EDT
A2: Ts & Ss would feel encouraged to take risks & provide solutions to issues. Feel free to pursue learning in creative ways. #kyedchat

And no fancy dashboard or any other report of data that really isn't relevant in the real world is going to change that #kyedchat
  • vekazee Sep 28 @ 8:36 PM EDT
SB2: I get #s matter, but Ss aren't interested in the numbers - they want it to mean something, have purpose. #stopteachingtotest #kyedchat
  • mikepaul Sep 28 @ 8:37 PM EDT
    Q3 - on the way! #kyedchat
  • mikepaul Sep 28 @ 8:38 PM EDT

  • mikepaul Sep 28 @ 8:39 PM EDT
Would love to hear what you have to say! #kyedchat
  • SherriRMc Sep 28 @ 8:40 PM EDT
A3: Should play key role. Bystander training, stud voice teams, principal forums can help Ss take ownership of the school. #kyedchat
  • vekazee Sep 28 @ 8:41 PM EDT
A3: Hve dscused b4..problem is kids come and go - staff doesnt - hard on school climate to change trends as often as change minds #kyedchat
  • mikepaul Sep 28 @ 8:43 PM EDT
but are the wants and needs of our kids really all that different? Sure, there are different "flavors" but we can work to find ways that meet the needs of many different groups #kyedchat

  • mikepaul Sep 28 @ 8:45 PM EDT
Q4: What role should administrators have in developing a school's culture? #kyedchat
  • SherriRMc Sep 28 @ 8:50 PM EDT
A4: Admins set tone of building. They can lift up or tear down work in building. Must choose which voices are heard. #kyedchat
  • mikepaul Sep 28 @ 8:53 PM EDT
Vital to know those voices and give a platform to those that need to be heard and do as much as possible to keep others from influencing others #kyedchat
    In reply to @SherriRMc
  • mikepaul Sep 28 @ 8:53 PM EDT
Last question - coming up! #kyedchat
  • vekazee Sep 28 @ 8:53 PM EDT
