The #2PencilChat is a weekly conversation about educational technology. As we enter a more student-centered age, let's talk about using all the tools in our toolboxes to be innovative and dynamic teachers.
A1 The word wonder is not a standard-type word but it offers so much. Let us have Ss notice, wonder, explore, and discover new pathways to learning. #2pencilchat
A1) Two options #2PencilChat
1. When you deviate from the curriculum to learn something
2. When you learn the curriculum through a non-traditional method
A1: What you consider non-standard depends on your standards.
I would say when something does not go as planned, but the students still learn a lot. #2pencilchat
I wasn’t thinking that high up, unfortunately. But if you are learning art techniques or a foreign language by engaging with speakers who speak that language rather than from a textbook, then yes. #2PencilChat
Sorry #2pencilchat, I have to go back to writing a proposal. I did enjoy chatting with all of you tonight. Leaving you with one of my digitals that may glitter up your screen (from https://t.co/gYpfkOSv6g)
A2. I watched a 1st grader during #HourofCode come up with his own plan for working through the puzzles. No teacher direction other than modeling a couple for the class. And it was a great strategy! #2PencilChat
A2 Community/classroom building activities, really any problem that arises for learners... playground issues, to tieing shoes, to organizing a desk, dropping their lunch tray #2pencilchat
Your exchange right here is a great example of non-standard learning. All “students” looked to see how you handled the guy who was late. We all just learned, by your welcome, that’s it’s all good in this chat culture. #2pencilchat
The world is such a fascinating place, isn't it? You're Tuesday, I'm Wednesday, I'm enjoying warm weather you need a coat and scarf. Life is wonderful #2PencilChat
A3 Actually that's probably when meaningful learning happens most - spontaneous, creative, imaginative not attached to a standard but probably is if you really think about it #2PencilChat
A3 Learner’s dive deeper, create something unexpectedly to share w/class, want others to join in, ask for more independent learning of concept #2pencilchat
A3: For me, I want school to be a place that kids want to be. So something meaningful could be something that students will always remember like decorating gingerbread houses (although learning DID occur). Anytime I hear "Best day ever!" #2PencilChat
A3. When we see that our kids are learning to identify problems & problem solve & are developing interpersonal skills that will help them throughout life. #2PencilChat
I teach maths to a group of students who are apprentice builders... They have to pass some academic units as part of the apprenticeship. 1/2 #2PencilChat
2/2 #2PencilChat
Last year the discussion somehow deviated to 911 conspiracies.
I sent them off, as young builders, to prove this to me.
They came back debunking conspiracy and with an amazing understanding of skyscraper design

A4: I send photos to families using @ClassDojo. My students are learning how to share pictures, videos, audio via @seesaw. They're also working on @buncee to share their #oneword2018. #2pencilchat
A4. Blogging, podcasting, @Flipgrid. Simply writing about it, sharing illustrations, and hanging it out in the hall for others to see. I’m sure there are many other ways my tired brain can’t think of! #2PencilChat
You are a bit luckier there than me Spiri. #2PencilChat
My people are still funny about us encouraging social media and if anyone is going to get in trouble it will be me
Can't recall it's name. Apparently it has always been there but someone just realised. Your data is visible to those who know... there was an update early this week to patch it but it slows some things down #2PencilChat
I used to film science pracs and share them. Then I got told if there was one health and safety thing that was wrong and visible I would have to explain myself #2PencilChat
A5: Could tell the students that it is their reward time, but that they have to circle up and tell the group about what they learned about during that time. Could call it the sharing circle. Everyone could snap for you after you have shared. #2pencilchat
A5 Just let them happen! Be open & flexible to them! Some of the best lessons are often not planned, real deal, spare of the moment, the kids are guiding it lessons #2pencilchat
