Welcome to #txeduchat We're doubling up tonight with guests hosts Chris and Tenille Shade, talking about "Reclaiming the Moral Reward of Teaching." Question 1 will be up in a moment.
Waiting around for tonight's #txeduchat to begin? Read about Teacher Burnout or Demoralization? What’s the Difference and Why it Matters at https://t.co/OLQE1MM2H0
A1: I think it starts by being knowledgeable and involved with making sure our elected officials respect and understand what we do and the challenges involved - advocating #txeduchat
A1: I've sent copies of the article, The Queen of Education by Louann Johnson https://t.co/H6kT2g7Wqm "Every elected rep in this country must spend 2 weeks teaching in school. Legislation will be introduced to double teachers' salaries and triple education budgets." #TXEDUChat
#txeduchat A1 Trs are public servants. Like it or not our pay is generated from property taxes. Trs should make a livable wage. You don't teach for decades to become materially wealthy, you teach for decades to get the joy that fills your soul through loving the Ss.
A1: Be active in your professional organizations!! Advocate by visiting your representatives during the legislative session, call them, and send emails. #txeduchat
A1 - Along with voting, I think educators need to stand up for themselves. Advocacy starts by listening to our instincts and setting boundaries. #txeduchat
A2: KNOW your power!! I hear so many complain about the situation and then they don’t vote because they think it won’t matter. 😤 If we stand together, we choose our elected officials. #txeduchat
A2: I really want to "listen in" on this one. I feel like empowering teachers is such a trendy thing people shout from the rooftops- it's a lot harder to put into practice or to do for yourself #txeduchat
A2 - I think the walkouts and strikes are about reclaiming power. @danielpink explains that as long as money is on the table, we can't get to what truly drives us: autonomy, purpose, and mastery. #txeduchat
I think embracing our writing identity and publishing opinion articles is a huge step in the right direction. We can learn a lot from the student activist who have mobilized and made things happen. #txeduchat
A2 Make our voices heard: connect with the community, share our stories, vote and encourage each other to speak out through blogs, letter to the editors, and letters/emails to representatives. #TXEDUChat
Invite politicians to come into our classrooms, teach with is...school board members, city council, state representatives...go all the way up! #txeduchat
A2: Empower: to make (someone) stronger and more confident, especially in controlling their life and claiming their rights.
Engage our students and do what’s right for them, no matter what! #txeduchat
I should totally invite a few local politicians to join us as guests during Lesson Study. We had a board member from @dentonisd and it made a huge difference! #txeduchat
#txeduchat A3 A Tr INDIVIDUALLY has little power, but as a voting block group, WE are a force. Again, Trs teach for the kids they impact. If you teach for the $$$ you need to find a new job.
A3 #txeduchat I worry about this one. I've known several who've been invited to give "input" on STAAR/TAKS, etc. and not one has ever felt their opinion mattered. It seemingly was more of an exercise that enabled TEA to claim they had teacher input.
A2 There are so many great things happening in education. Get the word out. Share the amazing things happening in our classrooms...our buildings...our districts. There are lots of people around us who want to help. Share your story and ask for help when you need it. #txeduchat
A3 - I recently attended #SXSWEDU where I heard @TheJLV speak about how we need a whole new table. Personally, I think teachers are given a courtesy seat, but our voices aren't really heard. We don't always feel safe to speak our truth. #txeduchat
A1: If our schools are not getting enough money or resources then maybe start having ISDs get volunteer grant writers for programs. Encourage educators to write papers and be noticed in their area of expertise. #txeduchat
A3: Having a “seat at the table” takes courage. We often have to take a seat without being invited. It’s imperative to not be afraid to speak up for what we need as teachers and/or what our students need. #txeduchat
A3: I think certain educators are invited to the table. Many others are too beat down to even try and some have had a seat and know their time and effort were in vain- #txeduchat

A3: More in local issues than state issues and absolutely no seat on federal issues. I am more aware and I do share my viewpoint. Not all listen, YET! #txeduchat
I often worry about this- if only the people who are loud and "pushy" shove their way in, it leaves little perspective from those who are quiet, but powerful in ed- I want leaders to seek input from many #txeduchat

A4: You will never be heard if you do not speak to the policy makers. Telling your neighbor won’t help. Vote for EDUCATION and speak to the elected officials even if you didn’t vote for them. #txeduchat
A4: I think it starts in your school and your district. Imagine if every teacher courageously spoke up and fought for what is right for their students and for them! #Empowerment#txeduchat
A4: I think you have to advocate for your students. Always. You also have to have enough confidence in your position to speak your mind (this is super-hard to do, especially when you do not feel valued- and many teachers don't on many levels) #txeduchat
A4 - Stay curious. Explore problems of practice with like-minded colleagues. Find a tribe and courageously share your passions. Rumble with our own stories. #txeduchat
Yes,but the opposite is also true. When educators speak up (invited or not) to advocate for themselves & their learners & feel like they ARE heard, it is so empowering. In a profession that demands so much of who we are, that can be life giving! #txeduchat
A5: I know this sounds depressing- but I don't guilt myself for crying a lot. It's been the toughest teaching year for me- and a good cry is productive for me. I just let it out and then find a good way to laugh after- usually with my kids #txeduchat
A5 - Travel is my guilty pleasure! When I get of out of town, I can shut it all down. I have to flip the switch to the OFF position and step away from the tyranny of the urgent. #TXEDUChat
A5: I focus on my Ss! They’re why I’m a teacher! Legislators can try to keep us down, but they can’t keep us from doing what’s best for kids to the best of our ability! #KidsDeserveIt#txeduchat

A6: indivual Ss. Individual wins. And honestly, thise individual losses that make me reflect “what could I have done differently? What will I do differently bext time?” #txeduchat
A6: The kids! The way we talk about books, share our questions and learn new ways to learn together. There is nothing better than a community of learners #txeduchat
A6 - When former students contact me via email or on social media with memories from 4th grade, I am reminded of what truly matters. #txeduchathttps://t.co/SDExy2CK1n

A6 - Having recently stepped out of the classroom, this question is getting tougher to answer. I wish the system allowed us to lead without leaving! #txeduchat
Comm. Morath, discussing teacher compensation: We send the message, “If you want to get ahead professionally, get as far away as possible from children.”

One reason I don't want to be in admin is that I love working with my Ss! Would love to lead Ts, but not at the price of being away from my Ss. #txeduchat
This is true! I think this is why I love Lesson Study. I get to see amazing teachers execute live lessons with real life kiddos. @underwhoseshade visits classrooms regularly to read to littles. We must stay grounded in our WHY! #txeduchat

I wonder how we could remedy this leadership conundrum? I wish we had more hybrid teaching jobs! I also read everything I can about @OppCulture#txeduchat
